Rules for transporting pets to the UK

Your pet must have one of the following documents to enter or return to the UK:

1. An EU pet passport issued in the EU (or in GB if issued before January 1, 2021), or a pet passport from another third country specified in Part 1. An EU pet passport issued in a Member state is still valid for GB entry.
2. A veterinary certificate (AHC) issued in GB and used for travel to the EU - which you can use to re-enter GB for up to 6 months after issuance, as long as the rabies vaccination stays in date.
3. a GB certificate of health of a pet (for GB only).

Important rules for entering the UK with a dog or a cat

If you want a dog, a cat or other pet to enter the UK on board a private jet, then the following information must be provided:

• Pet data, name, date of birth, etc.
• Contact details of the owner.
• Contact details of the veterinarian.
• Microchip number and implant date.
• Certificate of vaccination against rabies. The vaccination must be given at least 21 days before entering the UK.
• Treatment against echinococcosis (tapeworm) should be carried out within 24-120 hours before entering the UK, it should contain praziquantel and be entered in the passport or Appendix 1V with the date/signature and seal of the veterinarian. You don't need to treat your dog for tapeworm if you travel directly to the UK from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland (NI), Norway or Malta.

 

Which UK airports accept pets on private jets

Not every British airport can receive an animal arriving on a private flight. Pet arrivals into Great Britain must come through a route approved by APHA, the Animal and Plant Health Agency, and on each approved airfield a designated team checks the microchip and documents shortly after landing. On a business jet the whole check usually happens at the FBO, minutes after the door opens: Border Force clears the passengers first, then the pet’s paperwork is scanned, typically in five to fifteen minutes. No cargo terminal, no van to a reception centre on the other side of the airport.

Also approved for private pet arrivals with the right operator: Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds Bradford, Newcastle, Cambridge, Bournemouth, Blackpool, Cardiff, East Midlands, Gloucestershire, Humberside, Blackbushe and Lydd. And one useful exemption: flights arriving from the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man do not need an approved route at all, so a pet flying London to Jersey and back travels with no arrival formalities.

If you are departing from the UK with a pet

Leaving Britain is the easy direction: there are no UK-side pet checks on exit, and any departure airport works. All the preparation is about the destination. A practical example: London to Nice with a dog. We position the aircraft at Farnborough or Luton, your vet issues the Animal Health Certificate within 10 days of the flight, the crew is briefed, and the dog boards with you at the FBO. The one thing to diarise is the return: a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing back in the UK, done by any vet on the Cote d’Azur and entered in the certificate.

If you are arriving into the UK with a pet

This is where airport choice matters. The aircraft must be operated by an APHA-approved carrier, the arrival airport must be on that operator’s approval, and the pet check happens at the FBO right after Border Force. For the quickest experience we usually recommend Farnborough, Biggin Hill or Oxford: dedicated business aviation fields where the pet team meets the aircraft and the whole arrival, passport to car, takes about twenty minutes. Give us 24 to 48 hours of notice for the pet arrival booking and the paperwork check, and the landing will feel no different from a flight without an animal on board.

 

 

Rules of flight with pets to Europe and EU countries

The rules for taking a pet from Great Britain into the EU changed on 22 April 2026, and the change matters for every trip. EU pet passports are no longer valid for GB residents, even passports issued years ago in an EU country. Every journey now needs an Animal Health Certificate (AHC):

• The AHC is issued by an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before you enter the EU.
• It covers a single entry. Once inside the EU it stays valid for up to 6 months for onward travel between EU countries and for the return to Great Britain, as long as the rabies vaccination remains in date.
• Your pet must be microchipped before the rabies vaccination, and the vaccination must be given at least 21 days before travel.
• Dogs travelling directly to Finland, Ireland, Malta or Norway also need a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before arrival, recorded in the certificate.
• Up to 5 pets can travel per journey under the non-commercial rules; more than that, and the trip falls under commercial transport with different paperwork.
• Pets must arrive in the EU through a designated travellers’ point of entry where documents and the microchip are checked. Not every airfield qualifies, so on a private flight the arrival airport is chosen with this in mind.

A serological rabies test is not required for travel from Great Britain to the EU: it only applies when entering the EU from unlisted third countries. If your itinerary continues beyond Europe, tell us the full route and we will confirm the exact certificate set for each border.

Dogs and cats fill most of the manifest, but far from all of it. Rabbits, ferrets, tortoises, even tarantulas have flown on private jets, and each group lives under its own corner of the rules. Here is the short map, based on the current GB requirements:

Two rules stretch across every species: up to five animals travel with their owner under the pet rules, and the species itself decides the paperwork. Name it in the first call, however unusual, and we will map the exact document set before you commit to anything.

 

Empty leg flights with a pet on board

An empty leg is a one-way repositioning flight: the aircraft has to fly a sector without passengers to collect its next client or return to base, and the operator sells that sector at a deep discount, often less than half the standard charter rate. Around London such legs appear daily, and yes, many of them can be booked with a dog or a cat in the cabin.

There is one honest caveat. On a regular charter we pick the aircraft around your pet; on an empty leg the aircraft is fixed, so everything has to match what is already flying. The operator must accept animals on that airframe, and if the leg lands in the UK, the operator and the arrival airport must be an approved combination on the APHA list, the same rule we described above. In practice roughly half of the published legs pass both filters, which still leaves plenty to choose from on popular routes: Nice, Geneva, Paris, Palma and the ski airports in season.
