Private jet charter in Puerto Rico

A private jet to Puerto Rico means about 3,797 nautical miles from a London airfield, a crossing at the very edge of what a Challenger-class cabin can fly without a stop and an easy sector for a long-range jet. Private Jets UK begins by asking whether the party wants one unbroken flight or the lower price of a jet that lands for an hour in the Azores. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. On the island that means a choice of four airports with US customs for jets, from San Juan, where the border officers work inside the private terminal, to Aguadilla on the west coast and Ponce in the south, and a car, a small aircraft or a helicopter for the last stretch to a beach resort, a golf course or the island of Vieques.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Puerto Rico depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Challenger 605 to San Juan Luis Munoz Marin with one technical stop in the Azores, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Puerto Rico?

Only the long-range jets cross in a single sector. A Challenger 605 or a Legacy 650, the sensible choice for six to eight people, needs one stop, and that stop is almost always Santa Maria in the Azores, which lies close to the line from London. From Biggin Hill the two legs to San Juan are 1,429 and 2,511 nautical miles, only 143 more than the direct 3,797, so the detour costs very little and the real price of the stop is an hour on the ground. The island keeps Atlantic Standard Time all year, four hours behind Britain in winter and five in summer, because it does not change its clocks in spring. The times below are westbound, flown against the usual headwind, and gate to gate without the stop:

London to San Juan, Challenger 605 via the Azores
3,940 nautical miles from Biggin Hill in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Santa Maria
about 9 h 35 min plus the stop
London to San Juan, Falcon 900LX non-stop
3,797 nautical miles from Biggin Hill, a heavy jet with the range to do it in one hop
about 9 h 15 min
London to San Juan, Global 6000 non-stop
3,765 nautical miles from Farnborough, a long-range jet at its normal cruise
about 8 h 20 min
London to San Juan, Gulfstream G650ER non-stop
3,797 nautical miles from Biggin Hill in the fastest cabin on the list
about 8 h 15 min
Belfast to San Juan, Falcon 900LX non-stop
3,615 nautical miles, the shortest crossing in the price table below
about 8 h 50 min
San Juan to London, Global 6000 non-stop
3,765 nautical miles with the jet stream behind the aircraft
about 7 h 05 min

Why the arrival feels like the middle of the day

A Global 6000 that leaves Farnborough at ten in the morning in winter touches down at San Juan at about 14:20 by the local clock, with the body still on London time and sure that it is evening. That leaves the afternoon free for a swim or a first dinner.

The way home is the shorter half, because the jet stream runs from west to east: the same Global 6000 that needs about 8 h 20 min westbound is back in about 7 h 05 min.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Three things worth knowing about these figures

– The stop saves real money on this route. From Biggin Hill a Challenger 605 via the Azores starts at £79,200, a Legacy 650 on the same plan at £83,750, a Falcon 900LX non-stop at £94,900 and a Gulfstream G650ER at £122,350. The difference buys hours and an unbroken night's sleep. For a party of four the Azores hour is a fair trade, while for a short stay with a large party the long-range jet usually earns its premium;

– The airport on the island changes the figure by a few per cent, not by a class. The same Challenger 605 plan to Aguadilla comes to £80,200 from Biggin Hill, and to Ponce to £80,050. San Juan is the base of this page because it is where most of the island's private traffic lands and where the customs officers sit inside the terminal;

– A one-way price includes the aircraft's journey home. The jet must recross the Atlantic whether it carries you or not, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip, not as a bargain. A Global 6000 from Farnborough comes to £102,850. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport, by distance band, and we show it as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Puerto Rico and to the neighbouring islands

The island is small: San Juan to Ponce on the south coast is 43 nautical miles and to Aguadilla in the north-west 67, so a flight from one end of Puerto Rico to the other is shorter than a London to Paris hop. The sectors people ask for are the short hops to Vieques and Culebra, a day on the south coast and the run out to the surf coast in the north-west:

Two things worth knowing about flights inside Puerto Rico

– Puerto Rico is United States territory, and American law bars a foreign-registered aircraft from carrying passengers for hire between two points in the United States. The jet that brought you from Britain therefore does not normally fly a paying party from San Juan to Aguadilla or Vieques. For the internal sectors we propose a US-registered aircraft or a helicopter based on the island, and the arrangement is confirmed in writing before the quote;

– Vieques is served by scheduled air taxis, with flights of about 30 minutes from San Juan, about 20 minutes from Isla Grande and about 10 minutes from Ceiba, and a charter is an option for a group that would fill a small aircraft. A turboprop earns its place for a party with golf bags, while two people with hand luggage are usually better served by the scheduled operators.

The neighbours are a different matter. St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands lie a short hop to the east, the Dominican Republic is a short hop west, and Florida is a flight of a couple of hours. Tortola and the Dominican Republic are fresh international arrivals with their own entry rules, while St Thomas and Florida are American points, which raises the same question about the aircraft as on the island, so we confirm with the operator and the handler what the sector allows before the quote:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Puerto Rico:

Turboprops

Aircraft for the island, not for the ocean, which no turboprop can cross in a day. The Pilatus PC-12 suits Vieques, Culebra and the south coast from a base in Puerto Rico, and a King Air 350 carries a larger group on the longer internal sectors.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Light jets

They serve the internal sectors and the nearby islands with four to six people. Isla Grande, with a runway of about 1,690 metres, is a light-jet airfield, and no light jet attempts the crossing from Britain, so we do not offer it.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Super-midsize

A Challenger 350 is published at 3,200 nautical miles, enough for the two legs through the Azores, since the longer one to San Juan is 2,511. The cabin is snug for nine hours, so we propose it to a couple or a small family.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Heavy jets

The class behind most sensible crossings: the Challenger 605 and Legacy 650 make one stop and carry a family with staff or a golf group in comfort. San Juan, Aguadilla and Ponce all have runways of more than 2,400 metres, so a heavy jet is not held back by runway length.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Ultra-long range

The only class that crosses in one hop, and the one we suggest for a short stay, a large party or an animal travelling in the cabin. A Falcon 900LX is the cheapest of these from Britain, with the Global and Gulfstream types faster and larger.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

online private jet directory

Because the island is small and the crossing is long, a stay often involves two aircraft: the one that brings you from Britain, and a helicopter or small aircraft based on the island for the hops to the coast and to Vieques. We name both when we quote.

Business aviation airports in Puerto Rico

Four airports on the island take international private arrivals with US customs. One of them takes most of the traffic, San Juan, and the table lists the main fields from the capital outwards:

Airport Ground How it operates
Luis Munoz Marin International
SJU / TJSJ
Isla Verde, in Carolina, about 3 miles south-east of San Juan on the north coast The island's main airport, owned by the Ports Authority and run by a private operator under a 40-year lease. Runway 8/26 is 3,170 metres (10,400 feet) and runway 10/28 is 2,443 metres (8,016 feet), and the tower is attended all day and night. Private jets use Jet Aviation San Juan on the East Ramp, a full-service terminal of 20,000 square feet that lists daily hours from 06:00 to midnight and has a US Customs and Border Protection office inside the building, passenger and crew lounges, a crew suite with showers, two conference rooms, catering and a hangar with 28-foot doors. A second handler, Airport Aviation Services, is also listed, with customs said to be on site
Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci (Isla Grande)
SIG / TJIG
Inside San Juan, on the bay, about 6 nautical miles west of the main airport A city airfield with a single runway, 9/27, of 1,688 metres (5,539 feet), so it suits light jets and some midsize types. Aircraft with a wingspan over 79 feet are not supported, and the approach to runway 9 and the departure from runway 27 can be obstructed by cruise ships and tall vessels in the bay. Modern Aviation is the handler and offers quick US customs and agriculture inspections. Customs and immigration are listed from 10:00 to 20:00 local time, the tower from 07:00 to 19:00 and airport attendance from 06:00 to 19:30
Rafael Hernandez
BQN / TJBQ
About 3 miles north-east of Aguadilla, on the north-west corner of the island, the gateway to Rincon and Isabela A runway of 3,567 metres (11,702 feet), the longest on the island, which suits heavy jets and makes it a sensible alternate. Two handlers work here, Western Aviation Service and COPECA. It is a customs landing rights airport, and customs service is arranged by telephone. The tower is listed from about 07:00 to 21:00 local time, and rescue cover of Index C is available with 72 hours' notice
Mercedita
PSE / TJPS
About 3 miles east of Ponce, on the south coast A runway of 2,439 metres (8,002 feet), long enough for a heavy jet. There is one handler, Aero Services (South Puerto Rico Aero Service), no operating control tower, and approach control from San Juan. It is a customs landing rights airport, with customs listed on weekdays from 08:00 to 17:00 local time
Other airfields of the Ports Authority
RVR, VQS, CPX, MAZ and others
Ceiba on the east coast, Vieques and Culebra on the islands, Mayaguez in the west, and Arecibo and Humacao The Ports Authority runs nine public-use airports, among them Aguadilla, Ponce and Isla Grande above, and most are small airfields without a control tower that serve general aviation. We use them for turboprop and air taxi legs, not for the arrival from Britain, and we confirm customs status before any international landing

The airports differ in what they do best:

San Juan

Jet Aviation is the large-cabin choice, because it takes aircraft up to the size of an airliner, has covered hangar space and does the border check in its own building.

Isla Grande

The airfield lies inside the city, and the drive to Old San Juan and the Condado hotels is short. Customs closes at eight in the evening, so a late arrival goes to San Juan, and the long-range Global and Gulfstream types, with a wingspan of about 94 feet, are outside the field's limit.

Aguadilla

Western Aviation Service and COPECA handle the aircraft. For a party bound for Rincon or Isabela it saves a long drive across the island, and its long runway suits the heavier jets.

Ponce

A south coast arrival suits a party going to Guanica or the old city of Ponce. Customs works only on weekdays, so a weekend arrival from abroad is planned another way.

Times are local, and the listings are in UTC

Airport directories publish customs and tower hours in UTC, and the island is four hours behind UTC all year, so 14:00 to 24:00 UTC at Isla Grande means 10:00 to 20:00 on the clock in San Juan. Pilots who flew in after a major hurricane described fuel, water and power as scarce around the airports, which is a reason to avoid the busiest weeks of the storm season and to have the handler confirm fuel for the return leg.

Arriving from Britain: ESTA, border check and what to carry

Puerto Rico is United States territory, so a private flight from London arrives as an international flight into the United States, with the same border check as Miami or New York. Every passenger and crew member is inspected by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival, and at San Juan the officers work inside the private terminal, not in the airline hall.

Visa waiver
British citizens who qualify for the Visa Waiver Programme need an approved ESTA before the flight; it allows a stay of up to 90 days, and every passenger needs one, children included. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry, and the officer decides on the day
ESTA for each passenger
Passport
the passport must be valid for the entire stay; the ESTA is applied for on the official government site, and an approval that lacks the selfie photograph the border service asks for may have to be renewed, so we ask for the approval screen of each passenger before we quote
valid for the whole visit
Who needs a visa instead
travellers who have been arrested, even without a conviction, who have a criminal record, who overstayed or were refused earlier, or who have been to certain countries after the cut-off date set by the US government; ESTA may also not cover work done on behalf of a US company
apply for a visa if in doubt
Passenger list
the pilot sends the names and travel documents of everyone aboard, crew included, to the border service through the electronic system not later than 60 minutes before leaving Britain, and must have the authority's reply before departure
before leaving Britain
Customs and agriculture
customs and agriculture officers check the party and the cabin, and the handler at San Juan lists immigration and agriculture clearance in the same building; we agree the catering order in advance so that fresh produce does not become a problem on arrival
declare food and goods

Permissions for the aircraft

A foreign-registered aircraft on a charter into the United States needs US Department of Transportation authorisation, known to operators as the 375 exemption, and may need a waiver from the Transportation Security Administration. We check what the operator holds before we quote; this is the operator's paperwork, not the passenger's. The pilot also gets the approval to land from the border authorities before leaving Britain.

Coming home is a flight into Britain: a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, while most other nationalities do.

From the apron to the resort: which airport for which part of the island

The island is only about 100 miles long, but the mountains in the middle make a wrong choice of airport cost an extra hour on the road. These are the usual pairings:

San Juan, Condado and Old San Juan
the capital, founded in 1521, with its old walled quarter, the Condado hotel strip and the beaches of Isla Verde next to the airport
San Juan (SJU), or Isla Grande (SIG) for a light jet
Dorado
the Dorado Beach Ritz-Carlton Reserve, with the TPC Dorado Beach golf course, about 45 minutes west of San Juan by road
San Juan (SJU)
Rio Grande, El Yunque and Fajardo
the Four Seasons and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar on the north-east coast, about 45 minutes east of San Juan, the rainforest above them and the boats to the islands
San Juan (SJU), or a helicopter
Vieques and Culebra
the two islands off the east coast, with beaches and a bioluminescent bay at Vieques, reached by small aircraft, with an air taxi to Vieques taking about 30 minutes from San Juan
San Juan (SJU), then a small aircraft
Rincon, Isabela and Aguadilla
the surf coast of the north-west, with the Royal Isabela resort, golf and the winter waves of Rincon
Rafael Hernandez (BQN)
Ponce and the south coast
the second city of the island, the Copamarina resort at Guanica, about 30 minutes from Ponce, and the dry forest of the south
Mercedita (PSE)

Puerto Rico: what our clients go for

The first draw is the resort coast. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, sits on the north shore with a championship golf course by TPC, and further east the Four Seasons Resort and Residences and the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar face the Atlantic at Rio Grande, each with its own golf. On the north-west coast the Royal Isabela offers private casitas and a golf course.

The second is the water. Three of the seven bioluminescent bays in the Caribbean that glow all year are in Puerto Rico, at Laguna Grande near Fajardo, at La Parguera in the south-west and at Puerto Mosquito on Vieques. Surfers go to Rincon, where the waves are at their best from November to February, and from February to May humpback whales are watched from the coast near Isabela, Rincon and Aguadilla.

San Juan is the third reason. The city was founded in 1521 and is described as the oldest municipality of the island, with the fortress of San Felipe del Morro at the mouth of the bay and an old town connected to the main island by bridges. Inland, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States Forest Service system, and its peak reaches 1,065 metres.

The island has about 3.2 million people, the currency is the US dollar, and Spanish and English are both official languages. The highest point, Cerro de Punta in the Cordillera Central, stands at 1,338 metres.

The year in Puerto Rico: winter high season, quiet summers and hurricanes

The island sits in the warm part of the Caribbean all year, and the choice of month is a choice between price, weather risk and crowds:

December to April
the high season, with winter temperatures of roughly 21 to 27 degrees; the hotels fill, Christmas lasts well into January, and the island is at its busiest
peak
April to June
the shoulder season, with fewer tourists and lower prices, and the whale watching of the west coast ends in May
shoulder
July to October
the hot months, with the sharpest falls in hotel prices from August to October; the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and its busiest weeks fall in late summer and autumn
quiet, with storm risk
November
the season turns, the Atlantic storms wind down early in the month, and the surf starts to build at Rincon
shoulder

Christmas does not end on 25 December

The island calls its holiday season the longest Christmas in the world, because it runs through Three Kings Day on 6 January and the Octavitas that follow, and resorts, handlers and long-range jets are all booked together. The prices on this page describe an ordinary week, with a Falcon 900LX from Biggin Hill at £94,900 one way, and a holiday date is booked as early as the plans are known.

The Puerto Rican calendar: street festivals, carnival, golf and surf

Several of the dates below fill the hotels in Old San Juan and the apron at the same time:

Late December
The Festival de las Mascaras in Hatillo on 28 December, in a holiday season that begins well before Christmas
January
The Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian in Old San Juan, a three-day street carnival after 6 January, and the Festival de la Novilla in the town of San Sebastian
February
The Carnaval Ponceno in Ponce, and the start of the humpback whale season on the west coast, which lasts until about May
March

Flying to Puerto Rico with a dog or a cat

Puerto Rico admits dogs and cats from Britain under the federal rules that apply across the United States, and for a dog the rules are lighter than most owners expect. The harder half is the way home. On a private flight the animal stays in the cabin with its owner.

The one fact to read before you book

Going out, a dog needs a CDC Dog Import Form completed online, and the emailed receipt is shown on arrival. The United Kingdom is not on the CDC list of countries at high risk for dog rabies, so the lighter path applies: the dog must be at least six months old, must carry a microchip that a universal scanner can read, and must look healthy. A dog from such a country may enter at any airport, so San Juan, Isla Grande and Aguadilla are all open to it. Each dog needs its own form, and the receipt is valid for six months unless the dog travels elsewhere in the meantime. Cats are outside the dog rule, and we ask the handler what the officers expect before the flight.

Coming home, the United States, Puerto Rico included, is a listed country for Great Britain. The animal needs a Great Britain pet health certificate, dated in the ten days before arrival, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and a microchip fitted before or at the time of that vaccination, and a dog also needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that does not meet the rules can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

  • The CDC receipt, printed or on a phone, together with a microchip that a universal scanner can read. A puppy under six months cannot enter;
  • The rabies record and the microchip date, which decide whether the certificate for the return can be signed. We ask the owner to send both before the quote;
  • A vet appointment on the island for the last week of the stay, booked when the trip is booked, because the certificate for Britain is dated within ten days of landing;
  • The island's own agriculture and animal health rules, which we ask the handler to confirm for the date, because the published federal guidance does not say whether the island adds conditions of its own.

The long-range jet that crosses in one hop is the easiest on the animal, with about nine hours in the cabin and no stop, and a Challenger 605 with an hour on the ground at Santa Maria means one more landing for the dog. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight, and the longer rules for other species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Puerto Rico produces its share, because a charter there is one-way by nature and the aircraft must cross an ocean to get home or to find the next client.

Where empty legs to and from the island come from

– The start of the winter season in December, when aircraft cross from Britain full and head home empty, or are sent out empty to collect guests travelling the other way;

– The end of the high season in April, when aircraft based in the region are sent back to Europe or up to Florida, and the legs are offered at the last minute;

– The weeks around Three Kings Day in January, when a heavy jet arrives with a party and flies home empty a day or two later.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can vanish when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
San Juan - UK (London Biggin Hill) Challenger 605 12 seats £33,250
UK (London Luton) - San Juan Challenger 605 12 seats £33,300
San Juan - UK (Edinburgh) Challenger 605 12 seats £33,850
UK (Belfast) - San Juan Falcon 900LX 12 seats £38,050
San Juan - UK (Bristol) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £38,800
UK (Manchester) - San Juan Global 6000 13 seats £42,800
San Juan - UK (London Farnborough) Global 6000 13 seats £43,200
UK (London Gatwick) - San Juan Gulfstream G550 16 seats £45,450

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Falcon 900LX leg of £38,050 with eight aboard works out at about £4,760 a head, and the whole leg costs about two-fifths of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector;

– Legs from Puerto Rico are less regular than those on a busy European corridor and cluster around the season dates, so an open date helps more than anything.

Helicopter charter

The island is small enough for a helicopter to replace the road. Local operators sell private sightseeing flights across the island. For a party that lands at San Juan and sleeps at Dorado or Rio Grande, a helicopter turns a drive of about 45 minutes into a flight of a quarter of an hour, and for a day on Vieques it can replace the air taxi:

San Juan to Dorado
the airport to the Dorado resort coast, west along the north shore
about 15 min
San Juan to Rio Grande
the airport to the north-east resorts below the rainforest
about 15 min
San Juan to Fajardo
the airport to the marina and the bioluminescent bay
about 20 min
San Juan to Vieques
the airport to the island across the water
about 30 min
San Juan to Ponce
the capital to the south coast, over the mountains
about 30 min
San Juan to Rincon
the airport to the surf coast of the north-west
about 45 min

The times are straight-line estimates at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the route and the landing sites for your date.

Two points on rotary legs

A landing at a villa, on a golf course or at a hotel pad needs the owner's permission before the flight, and we name the operator and the sites when we quote. In the winter high season the helicopter seats go first, so the jet and the transfer are best booked as one trip.

Puerto Rican charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

WINTER · A FAMILY OF SIX

A fortnight on the Dorado coast

Biggin Hill - San Juan via the Azores, Challenger 605, about 9 h 35 min plus the stop · 6 pax

The aircraft stopped at Santa Maria for fuel, then went home empty. A car took the family west from San Juan, and the return a fortnight later was booked as a separate one-way, since nobody wanted an aircraft waiting through the busiest weeks.

GOLF · FOUR FRIENDS

A non-stop crossing for a long weekend

Farnborough - San Juan, Global 6000, about 8 h 20 min · 4 pax

The group landed on the Thursday afternoon and teed off at Rio Grande on the Friday morning, with the clubs in the hold. The handler at San Juan had the stand and the fuel for the Sunday departure confirmed weeks ahead.

WHALE SEASON · A COUPLE

The north-west coast without the long drive

Biggin Hill - Aguadilla via the Azores, Challenger 605, about 9 h 45 min plus the stop · 2 pax

They chose Aguadilla over San Juan to be close to Rincon, and went out on the water for the humpbacks in the second half of February. Customs at the field was arranged by telephone through the handler before departure.

VIEQUES · A WEEKEND AWAY

Two couples and a night on the bioluminescent bay

San Juan - Vieques, Pilatus PC-12 NGX, about 40 min · 4 pax

The party left San Juan on the Friday and came back on the Monday, using a turboprop based on the island rather than the long-range aircraft that had brought them from Britain.

WITH THE DOG · A LONG LEAD TIME

A couple, a spaniel and three weeks in the sun

Biggin Hill - San Juan, Falcon 900LX non-stop, about 9 h 15 min · 2 pax + dog

The CDC receipt was ready before departure and a non-stop aircraft spared the dog the extra landing. The vet visit for the British health certificate fell in the last week of the stay.

EMPTY LEG · THE END OF THE SEASON

A flexible return to Edinburgh

San Juan - Edinburgh, Challenger 605 empty leg, about 8 h 10 min plus the stop · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of four days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £33,850, well under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a Thursday departure.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Puerto Rico

1How long does it take to fly to Puerto Rico by private jet?

About 9 hours 15 minutes non-stop from a London airfield to San Juan in a Falcon 900LX, and about 9 hours 35 minutes in a Challenger 605 plus about an hour on the ground in the Azores. The way home is shorter with the jet stream behind the aircraft. The island is four hours behind Britain in winter and five in summer.

2How much does a private jet to Puerto Rico cost?

From about £79,200 one way from Biggin Hill to San Juan in a Challenger 605 with a stop in the Azores. A Falcon 900LX non-stop from Biggin Hill is about £94,900, and a Gulfstream G650ER about £122,350. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airports do private jets use in Puerto Rico?

San Juan (SJU), where Jet Aviation has a terminal with US customs inside the building, takes most of the traffic. Isla Grande (SIG) in the city suits light jets, Aguadilla (BQN) serves the north-west and Rincon, and Ponce (PSE) the south coast. All four are customs landing rights airports, though customs at Ponce is listed only on weekdays.

4Do British passengers need a visa or an ESTA to fly to Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is United States territory, so British citizens need an approved ESTA, which allows a stay of up to 90 days, or a visa, and a passport valid for the whole visit. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry. The pilot files the passenger list with the border service not later than 60 minutes before leaving Britain, and the party is cleared by US Customs and Border Protection at the terminal.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Puerto Rico?

Yes. A dog needs a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, a microchip a universal scanner can read, and an age of at least six months, and the United Kingdom is not on the CDC high-risk list. For the return, the United States is a listed country: the animal needs a Great Britain pet health certificate dated within ten days of arrival, and a dog also needs a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain. We confirm the paperwork in writing for your dates.

6When is the best time to fly to Puerto Rico, and how early should I book?

December to April is the high season and the busiest time on the island. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and hotel prices fall between August and October. Book as early as the dates are known for Christmas, which lasts until the middle of January, and for the carnival and golf weeks in February and March.
