Private jet charter in Faroe islands

Eighteen main islands, one airport, roughly fifty-five thousand people and a flying time from Britain that runs from just over an hour and a quarter from Aberdeen to about two hours and a quarter from London: the Faroe Islands are close to us on the map and still unlike any other place we plan. Private Jets UK sends charters to Vágar, the only airport in the archipelago, and the planning sits in the details the airport itself publishes: a coordinated slot, compulsory handling, daytime hours and a runway of 1,799 metres. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In the Faroes that means a slot requested in good time, a handler confirmed at Vágar, and honest advice about what a jet can do on islands with a single runway and no hangar.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in the Faroe Islands depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Aberdeen, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ to Vágar and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to the Faroe Islands?

The Faroe Islands keep the same clock as Britain all year, on Western European Time in winter and Western European Summer Time after the clocks go forward, so a morning departure lands in the morning and nothing needs adjusting. These are the sectors to Vágar on a Citation CJ3+, wheels up to wheels down, from the airfields our clients use most:

Aberdeen to Vágar
343 nautical miles, the shortest crossing from Britain, and the departure that sets our headline price
about 1 h 20 min
Manchester to Vágar
568 nautical miles, the North West of England
about 1 h 55 min
Biggin Hill to Vágar
714 nautical miles, the London airfield of the price anchor
about 2 h 15 min

A short sector with nowhere to divert

Range is not the question here, since 714 nautical miles from Biggin Hill is within reach of every jet on our list without a stop. The question is the airport at the other end, the only one in the islands, so the fuel plan carries a diversion to an airfield outside the Faroes, in Scotland, Norway or Iceland.

Keflavik is 449 nautical miles from Vágar, and the sector from Aberdeen is 343.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Prices for the private jet flights to the Faroe Islands

Typical charter prices from Britain to Vágar, cheapest first. Every row is the same aircraft, a Citation CJ3+, because the crossing is short enough for a light jet from any airfield on the list:

Route Aircraft Price, one way

from £5,700
Glasgow - Vágar

London Gatwick - Vágar
723 nm / 1,339 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7 seats
from £10,150

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The headline price starts at Aberdeen because it is the nearest large airfield to the islands. A client leaving London pays more for the longer crossing, £10,050 from Biggin Hill and £9,600 from Luton, and a Citation XLS+ adds a larger cabin for roughly £2,400 more from Biggin Hill;

– Prices are for the aircraft, not per seat, and they include the positioning of the jet. A night or two on the stand adds parking at Vágar, which needs the airport's approval.

Private jet flights within the Faroe Islands and to its neighbours

There is no flight to quote between two Faroese airports, because the islands have only one. Between the islands people drive through tunnels, take a ferry or fly by helicopter, and the helicopter section further down covers that. What a jet can do from Vágar is cross to the neighbours, and the prices below show the scale, cheapest first:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way
Vágar - Bergen
391 nm / 724 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7 seats
about 1 h 30 min from £6,250
Vágar - Keflavik
449 nm / 832 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7 seats
about 1 h 35 min from £6,950
Vágar - Copenhagen
755 nm / 1398 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7 seats
about 2 h 20 min from £10,500

One thing worth knowing about the onward sectors

– The Faroe Islands are outside both the EU and Schengen, while Norway, Denmark and Iceland are inside it, so a leg to Bergen, Copenhagen or Keflavik ends with a Schengen arrival and the way back starts with Faroese border control again.

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for the Faroe Islands:

Business aviation airports in the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands have one airport that takes a business jet and nothing to compare it with. The rest of the list is heliports:

Airport Ground How it operates
Vágar
FAE / EKVG
on the island of Vágar, a nautical mile east of Sørvágur and about 40 minutes by road from Tórshavn The only airport in the Faroe Islands and the one we price. Runway 12/30 is 1,799 by 30 metres of grooved asphalt, with approach lights at both ends. The approaches rely on a localiser with distance measuring, and the published minima are a cloud base of 400 feet and 2,500 metres of visibility on runway 12 and 700 feet and 4,000 metres on runway 30. Fire cover is category 6, with category 7 on one hour's notice. Jet A-1 is sold through DCC and Shell Aviation, and there is no hangar, no de-icing and no repair facility for visiting aircraft. Handling is compulsory above 5,700 kg or with more than ten seats, which takes in nearly every business jet, and comes from the airport's own handling company or Atlantic Airways Handling. Customs and immigration are approved for traffic from all states once a flight plan is filed within opening hours
Heliports
Tórshavn Boðanes EKTB, Klaksvík EKKV, Mykines EKMS
the capital, the main town of the north and the westernmost island The islands have about a dozen heliports in all, among them these three, and none takes a jet. They matter for the last stretch only: a helicopter from Vágar ends at one of them, and a charter uses them by agreement with the operator

Four points settle most arrivals at Vágar before the quote goes out:

Slots and parking come first

Vágar is a coordinated airport, so a landing slot is requested through the airport coordinator, and a night on the stand needs a parking approval.

Hours are daytime

The airport publishes seasonal hours, and its schedule typically runs from about seven in the morning to a little before eight in the evening. Opening outside them needs a request at least an hour before closing and carries a fee, and customs outside those hours is charged by the hour.

Crews need a briefing

A captain who has not operated at Vágar in the previous 36 months must complete the airport's familiarisation programme first.

No alternate on the islands

There is no second runway to divert to, so the flight plan names an airfield abroad and the fuel to reach it.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and permits

The Faroe Islands belong to the Kingdom of Denmark but govern themselves, and they are outside both the European Union and the Schengen Area. A flight from Britain lands as an international arrival at an airport approved for customs and immigration, and the handler walks you through the formalities.

Passports
the Foreign Office says British citizens need no visa to enter the Faroe Islands for tourism, and a visa-exempt visitor may stay up to 90 days. We found no separate rule on passport validity, so we advise a passport under ten years old with at least three months left after departure, and check it with the Danish embassy
every passenger, children included
Schengen days
the islands sit outside Schengen, so days spent there are counted separately from the 90 in 180 allowed in the Schengen area
counted separately
Customs
whale products from the Faroe Islands may not be brought into the UK or the EU, and the penalty is a fine of up to £5,000 or prison; declare anything dutiable or restricted
at the airport
Insurance
the national hospital is in Tórshavn and its helipad serves ambulance flights, so we ask for travel insurance that covers treatment and evacuation
strongly advised

The aircraft needs paperwork too

The operator supplies the air operator certificate, the airworthiness and registration certificates, insurance and crew licences, and files a flight plan within the airport's opening hours. We ask the handler to confirm in writing whether any permission is required for the operator, and we raise that when the quote is accepted.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation.

Which part of the islands you will be staying in

Vágar is the only gateway, so the question is how long the road, the ferry or the helicopter takes from the runway:

Sørvágur and west Vágar
the village is a nautical mile from the runway, the Mykines boat leaves from its marina, and a tunnel leads to Gásadalur, a village of fewer than twenty people
minutes from the apron
Mykines
the puffin island, 11 minutes by helicopter from the airport or a boat from Sørvágur in the season
about 11 min by air
Tórshavn
the capital, with most of the hotels; the road runs through the five kilometre Vágatunnilin, a subsea tunnel, and two more tunnels
about 40 min by road
Eysturoy and Klaksvík
the highest peak, Slættaratindur at about 880 metres, the G! Festival village of Syðrugøta and, beyond the Norðoyatunnilin tunnel, Klaksvík
by road, through subsea tunnels

Basalt, puffins and the sea: what our clients go for

The scenery does most of the persuading. There are 18 main islands and 779 islands, islets and skerries in all, and the largest of them are linked by road tunnels, several of them under the sea. Mykines, in the west, has basalt columns up to 30 metres high on its northern coast and a puffin colony in summer.

The parties we plan for are photographers and film crews with equipment that will not go on a scheduled aircraft, and small company groups. Do not expect a resort: the tourist board lists no five-star hotels. The best rooms are four-star: Hotel Føroyar on a hill above Tórshavn with a spa, Hotel Hafnia and Hotel Brandan in the centre, and the Hilton Garden Inn with ocean views. Nólsoyarstova, in an 18th century building, is a boutique stay.

The Faroese year: light, puffins and weather

Light and weather divide the Faroese year more than any calendar does:

December to March
sunrise at around half past nine and sunset at about three in December, temperatures between 3 and 7 degrees and the best chance of the northern lights; many attractions and some transport close, and high winds can cancel ferries
quiet
April and May
puffins arrive in late April, Mykines opens to visitors on 1 May and the sea is at its roughest for the boat in May
building
June
about 20 hours of sun around the solstice, and the Midsummer bonfire and the marathon in Tórshavn
busy
July
the sun rises at about 03:47 and sets at about 23:16 at the start of the month, the average temperature is only about 11.5 degrees, the puffins are at their peak and G! and Ólavsøka fall in this month
busiest
August and September
the Mykines ferry runs until 31 August and the puffins leave in early September; the autumn festivals follow
busy, then quiet

Waiting or flying home empty

From Biggin Hill to Vágar a Citation CJ3+ is £10,050 each way, about £20,100 for both sectors, and the quote sets that against parking at Vágar, which needs the airport's approval and offers no hangar.

The Faroese calendar: festivals, bonfires and the national day

The main moments, by usual month:

January
The Winter Jazz Festival, a reason to visit in the quietest part of the year
February
Restaurant Week and the HULDULITT festival in Tórshavn
June
The Tórshavn Marathon, Culture Night and the Midsummer bonfire in the capital
Mid-July
The G! Festival at Syðrugøta on Eysturoy, a music festival in the middle of the month
28 and 29 July
Ólavsøka, the national holiday in Tórshavn, with sport, music and dancing; shops and most tours close
August
The Summer Festival, and Ovastevna on Nólsoy
December
The Christmas village in Tórshavn and the Christmas shop in Klaksvík

Flying to the Faroe Islands with a dog or a cat

A visiting dog or cat cannot be brought into the Faroe Islands, and the customs service says so on its own website.

The one fact to read before you book

The Faroese customs service says that cats and dogs may be imported only by permanent residents or by anyone moving to the islands, and that imports for a stay of less than three months, transit included, are not permitted. A pet therefore cannot come along for a long weekend on a charter.

A pet-travel guide adds that animals must arrive by air at Vágar and not on a private aircraft. We have not found that in an official text, so we treat it as the working rule unless the Food and Veterinary Authority, the Heilsufrøðiliga Starvsstovan, confirms otherwise in writing.

For a family moving to the islands with an animal, the process is a different one and starts weeks before the date. The guide we consulted lists these points, which the authority confirms for your case:

  • A microchip that meets the ISO standard;
  • A rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry;
  • A health certificate completed by a vet within 48 hours before entry and endorsed by a government vet;
  • An import permit, applied for at least six days before the animal arrives.

For a short visit the practical answer is a kennel or a friend at home. Requirements for coming back into Britain are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. The Faroe Islands produce few of them, but a jet that has left a party on the islands has to come home somewhere.

Where Faroese empty legs come from

– The jet that has dropped a group on the islands and flies back to Britain without passengers, most often around the summer festivals.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of illustrative Faroese empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (Aberdeen) - Faroe Islands (Vágar) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £2,400
Faroe Islands (Vágar) - UK (Edinburgh) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £2,700
UK (Manchester) - Faroe Islands (Vágar) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £3,500
UK (London Luton) - Faroe Islands (Vágar) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £4,050
Faroe Islands (Vágar) - UK (Farnborough) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £4,200
Faroe Islands (Vágar) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £4,200

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Citation CJ3+ from Manchester to Vágar with seven aboard comes to roughly £500 a head;

– Legs to the Faroe Islands are few and bunch up around the summer festivals, so an open return date helps.

empty legs

Helicopter charter

The helicopter is not for the crossing from Britain. It covers the distances between the islands, where a road may not exist and a ferry depends on the sea. Atlantic Airways, the national airline, flies a scheduled helicopter service with two Leonardo AW139 aircraft of 15 seats each, and lists helicopter charter on its own site. Visitors are limited to one-way tickets on the scheduled flights, so a private party arranges a charter, and the operator confirms availability before the price. The sectors we are asked for:

Vágar Airport to Mykines
from the apron to the puffin island, in place of the boat from Sørvágur, which is often cancelled when the sea is rough
about 11 min
Froðba to Stóra Dímun
from Suðuroy to the island of Stóra Dímun
about 5 min
Stóra Dímun to Skúvoy
on to the island of Skúvoy
about 7 min

These are the flight times published for the scheduled service. A guide to Mykines quotes a little under 25,000 Danish kroner, roughly £2,800, for renting a helicopter for the round trip. The pilot and the weather set what is possible on the day.

Faroe Islands charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

MYKINES · THE PUFFINS

Four photographers on a July weekend

Edinburgh - Vágar, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax

The party took the boat to Mykines from Sørvágur. The aircraft stayed on the stand for two nights.

TÓRSHAVN · THE CAPITAL

Three executives and a day of meetings

London Biggin Hill - Vágar, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 10 min · 3 pax

A morning slot, a car through the subsea tunnel and an afternoon back at the airport.

EYSTUROY · THE FESTIVAL

Six friends for a music weekend

Manchester - Vágar, Challenger 350, about 1 h 45 min · 6 pax

Rooms and cars were booked before the jet. The aircraft flew home empty on the Monday, and the return was a separate charter.

FILM CREW · HEAVY EQUIPMENT

A small production with cases and cameras

London Luton - Vágar, Challenger 350, about 2 h · 5 pax

Handling and fuel were confirmed ahead, and the cases went onward by van through the tunnels and by helicopter to the smaller islands.

KLAKSVÍK · THE NORTH

A fishing industry visit from Scotland

Aberdeen - Vágar, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 20 min · 3 pax

The shortest crossing on our list, then a drive to Klaksvík by the tunnels. The party was home the same evening, before the airport closed.

EMPTY LEG · HOME FROM VÁGAR

A flexible return to London

Vágar - London Biggin Hill, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 2 h 15 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had left a party on the islands and was going home empty. The client gave us a window of a few days, and paid about £4,200, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter.

Frequently asked questions about flying to the Faroe Islands

1How long does it take to fly to the Faroe Islands by private jet?

About 2 hours 15 minutes from London Biggin Hill to Vágar in a Citation CJ3+, and about 1 hour 55 minutes from Manchester. From Edinburgh allow about 1 hour 30 minutes and from Aberdeen about 1 hour 20 minutes. The Faroe Islands keep the same clock as Britain.

2How much does a private jet to the Faroe Islands cost?

From about £5,700 one way from Aberdeen to Vágar on a Citation CJ3+. The same aircraft costs £6,400 from Edinburgh, £9,600 from London Luton and £10,050 from London Biggin Hill.

3Which airport do private jets use in the Faroe Islands?

Vágar (FAE / EKVG), the only airport in the islands, with a runway of 1,799 metres. Handling is compulsory for nearly every business jet and landing slots are coordinated. The other airfields in the islands are heliports.

4Do I need a visa to fly privately to the Faroe Islands?

The Foreign Office says British citizens need no visa to enter the Faroe Islands for tourism. The islands are outside the EU and Schengen, so passport control and customs apply on arrival, and we confirm in writing what applies to your flight and your passengers.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to the Faroe Islands?

No, not for a visit. Faroese customs allow cats and dogs to be imported only by permanent residents or by people moving to the islands, and imports for a stay of under three months, transit included, are not permitted.

6Can a private jet land at night or reach the other islands?

Vágar publishes seasonal opening hours, which typically run from about seven in the morning to a little before eight in the evening. Opening outside them needs a request and carries a fee. The other islands have heliports and no runways for jets, so the last stretch is by road, ferry or helicopter.
