Private jet charter in Miami

A London client who asks for Miami is really asking two questions at once, which airport and which aircraft, and the second cannot be answered until the first is settled. Private Jets UK charters the aircraft that the crossing demands and the airfield that suits the passengers. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. South Florida has six airfields that take a business jet and clear it through customs, strung along about 120 km of coast, and the choice between Opa-locka, Miami International, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach changes the drive at the far end far more than it changes the flight.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Miami depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. On a sector of about four thousand nautical miles the choice between a nonstop long-range cabin and a large-cabin jet with a stop in the Azores moves the price more than any other item. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from a London airfield, a long-range jet such as a Bombardier Global 6000 and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Miami?

The nonstop flight from London to Miami takes about 8 h 50 min in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, and a little less from Scotland and the north of England. The routed distance to Opa-locka runs from 3,808 to 4,009 nautical miles depending on the British field, against a published range of 6,000 nautical miles for the Global 6000, so the long-range cabins have margin to spare even with a westbound headwind. Smaller large-cabin jets are another matter. A Challenger 350 is published at 3,200 nautical miles, well short of the distance, and the Challenger 604, whose figures the 605 is said to match, at about 4,000, which a headwind and fuel reserves also eat up. Those aircraft fly the route in two legs with a stop at Santa Maria in the Azores. Miami keeps Eastern time, five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure from London lands in the early afternoon, Miami time. The times below assume the headwind that the North Atlantic normally supplies on the way west. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning, British time, and you land in Florida shortly before one in the afternoon, Miami time. Opa-locka lies 17 km from the middle of Miami in a straight line, and from the private terminal the car takes whatever the traffic allows, which on the causeways to Miami Beach at the end of the working day is a good deal. The westbound day is long in the pleasant way: 8 h 50 min in the air, the clocks go back five hours, and a client who leaves after breakfast can sit down to a late lunch in town with the afternoon still ahead. Coming home the sums run the other way. The eastbound crossing takes about 7 h 30 min with the wind behind, but it is usually flown overnight, so the party lands in Britain the next morning with a night in a seat instead of a bed.

Nonstop or one stop: the question that decides the aircraft

– A Global or Gulfstream long-range jet flies London to Miami in one go and is the answer for most parties of five or more, for anyone who wants to sleep, and for anyone who dislikes a ground stop in the middle of the Atlantic;

– A large-cabin jet of the Challenger 605 class stops once, normally in the Azores, because a published range of about 4,000 nautical miles on a sector of roughly 4,000 leaves nothing for the wind. From Biggin Hill the two legs are 1,429 and 2,974 nautical miles, the stop takes about an hour on the ground and the saving over a long-range jet is large. A Challenger 350 would be at the edge of its range even on the second leg, so we do not offer it on this route;

– Light jets and turboprops do not cross the Atlantic from Britain as a rule. If the trip needs a light jet or a King Air in Florida, the crossing is done by a larger aircraft and the smaller one is booked locally for the onward legs.

Private jet flights from Miami

Why the short legs are the cheap part

A trip to Miami is usually priced as one long crossing and a few short hops, and the hops cost a fraction of the crossing. A flight to Palm Beach in a Pilatus PC-12 starts at £3,100, against £108,350 for the Atlantic leg in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, so the extra stops in Florida barely change the total. The sensible way to plan it is to book the large aircraft for the ocean and ask us to quote the regional aircraft separately, since a turboprop or light jet based in Florida will almost always beat a long-range jet kept on the apron at Opa-locka for a week of sunshine.

Before you accept a Florida onward quote

– Who is allowed to fly it. The United States treats a charter between two American points as a domestic job. A non-US aircraft may carry passengers between two US points only if they arrived on it from abroad or are leaving on it for abroad, so the jet that brought you from London can take you on to Palm Beach, while a hop for another party is normally flown by a US-registered aircraft. Each US leg flown by a foreign aircraft also needs its own permit to proceed from customs;

– Which airport, and who clears it. Opa-locka, Fort Lauderdale Executive and Palm Beach each have their own handlers, customs hours and runway limits, so a quote that says only Florida has not told you where the car will wait. A leg to Nassau adds the formalities of a second country, and we build them into the same plan.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Aircraft that can cross the Atlantic are fewer than the ones that serve Europe, and their positions change daily, so a long-range jet already waiting in London is often cheaper than one that must first be brought over from North America. Florida works the other way round in winter, when many American aircraft are based there, and a jet that is going home across the ocean anyway can sometimes be had on better terms for the eastbound leg.

Business aviation airports in Miami

Six airfields around the city handle business jets and have customs on the field, and they are not interchangeable. The biggest airport and the busiest business jet field are two different places, and it helps to know which is which before a quote arrives.

Airport What it gives you
Opa-locka Executive, north Miami-Dade
OPF / KOPF
The default for a business jet and the airport the prices on this page are built on. It lies about 17 km from the centre of Miami, with a main runway of 8,002 ft (2,439 m), a second of 6,800 ft and a short third. Five handlers share the field: Atlantic Aviation, the JHSF Private Terminal, Signature, Jet Aviation and Fontainebleau Aviation. It is a customs landing rights airport, with border officers listed as available 09:00 to 24:00 every day and the control tower open 07:00 to 23:00. The airport is noise sensitive, and the runways are closed overnight for noise abatement except the main one on an hour's prior permission, so late arrivals and early departures are planned with the handler
Miami International
MIA / KMIA
The big airline airport, about 10 km from the city centre in a straight line, with four runways from 8,600 to 13,016 ft (2,621 to 3,967 m). Business aircraft use the General Aviation Center ramp, served by Signature, and arrivals there need permission requested three hours ahead. Aircraft with a wingspan over 78 ft cannot enter that ramp, so a large long-range cabin may be directed elsewhere on the field. A landing fee applies and turbojets use a noise-abatement departure profile. Usually chosen for an airline connection or by a client who wants the longest runway, and not as a rule
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
FLL / KFLL
About 33 km north of the centre of Miami, and the sensible option for a party bound for Fort Lauderdale or the northern coast. Two runways of 9,000 and 8,000 ft (2,743 and 2,438 m) and a choice of handlers: Sheltair, Fontainebleau Aviation, Signature, National Jets and Jetscape. Sheltair and National Jets list customs on site around the clock. The airport has a noise-abatement office and a preferential runway programme, and jet run-ups are not allowed between 23:00 and 07:00
Fort Lauderdale Executive
FXE / KFXE
A smaller field about 47 km from the centre of Miami, with a main runway of 6,002 ft (1,829 m) that suits light and midsize jets and not the biggest cabins. Banyan Air Service is listed as a 24-hour handler, with W Aviation, Signature and Atlantic also on the field. Customs is open 08:00 to 23:59, and the customs ramp is closed to arrivals from midnight to 08:00. Aircraft above the runway weight limit need prior permission
Palm Beach
PBI, FAA identifier KDJT
The airport for Palm Beach and the winter houses, about 102 km north of Miami, and a long way from the Miami events. A main runway of 10,001 ft (3,048 m) is long enough for any long-range jet. Atlantic Aviation, Jet Aviation Palm Beach and two Signature bases handle business aircraft, and it is an international airport of entry. The airport carries a presidential name and the FAA identifier KDJT, so the flight plan and the handling request should use the identifier the handler confirms
Miami Executive, Kendall-Tamiami
TMB / KTMB
A light-jet field in the south-west, about 28 km from the centre of Miami, with a 6,000 ft (1,829 m) runway. Reliance Aviation Miami is open from 06:00 to 21:00 every day, and customs is listed from 09:00 to 24:00, with extended hours on request. The control tower runs 07:00 to 23:00. Useful for the south of the county and the road to the Keys, and not for large cabins
Santa Maria, Azores
SMA / LPAZ
Not a Miami airport at all but the usual fuel stop on the way out for a large-cabin jet that cannot fly the whole distance. The runway is 3,048 m (10,000 ft) long, and the airfield was long a hub for transatlantic flights. Handling, fuel and the stop time are arranged by the operator, and we plan a turn of about an hour

Four details decide most Miami arrivals:

Choose the handler

Opa-locka has five handlers on one airport, Fort Lauderdale has five and Palm Beach has four bases, with different fees and different standards of lounge and car access. We put your preference, or the operator's, in writing. A driver told only Opa-locka may wait at the wrong door, so the handler's name goes on the transfer order too.

Hours and customs

Customs at Opa-locka is listed as open 09:00 to 24:00, and permission to land has to be secured between one and 24 hours before arrival. An aircraft due within an hour of closing can be sent to another airport. Fort Lauderdale has handlers with customs around the clock, and Fort Lauderdale Executive shuts its customs ramp from midnight to 08:00.

Border and passport

British citizens travel on an ESTA and a valid passport, and the aircraft's crew and passenger details are filed with the US border service before departure from Britain. Customs officers clear the party at the terminal, and we and the handler arrange it beforehand. Details are in the border section below.

Car and late nights

A car from the terminal is the normal plan, and we book it with the handler so the driver is waiting at the right door. Miami Beach is joined to the mainland by causeways, so allow time at rush hour. If the flight lands close to midnight, tell us early, because that is when the choice of airport is decided by customs hours.

business aviation

Border, passport and US customs

The United States is not in the Schengen area or any shared travel zone with Britain, and every passenger is inspected by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival. British citizens can enter under the Visa Waiver Programme with an approved ESTA for a stay of up to 90 days for business or tourism, and the passport has to be valid for the length of the stay. An approved ESTA does not decide admission: the officer at the terminal does. It can be refused or may not be enough in some cases, for example after an arrest, even without a conviction, after an earlier overstay, or for business done on behalf of a US company, and anyone in doubt applies for a visa instead, which takes longer. Apply for the ESTA well before the day, through the official site only. On a private aircraft the ESTA normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

For the aircraft there is a separate set of steps, and our handler and the operator carry them out. The pilot in command files the passenger and crew manifest through the CBP electronic system, no later than 60 minutes before departure from Britain, and must have the approval from the US authorities before the aircraft leaves. Approval of the manifest is not the same as permission to land: the pilot also secures landing rights from the CBP office at the airport. At Opa-locka the fact sheet we work from asks for that permission no less than one hour and no more than 24 hours before the expected arrival, with a tolerance of 30 minutes either way, and the aircraft parks at the customs ramp. Passports, the pilot's licence, the aircraft registration and the crew documents are shown, and the cabin and holds are opened for inspection. We confirm the procedure with the operator for each trip, because the rules change and a booking has to follow the text in force, not a memory of it.

The six South Florida fields all take international arrivals, but their hours differ. Opa-locka and Miami Executive list customs from 09:00 to 24:00, Fort Lauderdale Executive from 08:00 to 23:59, and two handlers at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood advertise service round the clock. A late-night arrival is therefore often settled by customs hours before anyone looks at the distance to the hotel.

Coming back into Britain brings its own paperwork. British and Irish citizens need no permission to enter, and most other visitors who need no visa still need a UK electronic travel authorisation. The aircraft is covered by a General Aviation Report, filed with the UK authorities between 48 hours and two hours before departure from Florida. A mistake is expensive: £2,500 for a first landing at an aerodrome that is not a regulated one, and £2,000 for every passenger carried without permission. The operator and the handler file the report, and we check that it has gone in.

From the apron to Biscayne Bay

Miami is a city of water and causeways, and the airport you choose decides which side of the bay you start on. The figures below are straight-line distances from the middle of Miami, which understate the drive but show the order of things.

Miami International to the centre of Miami
about 10 km, and the closest of the six to the city; 16 km to Miami Beach
by road
Opa-locka to the centre of Miami
about 17 km to the centre and 17 km to Miami Beach, on the north side of the county
by road
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood to Miami
about 33 km from the centre of Miami, 27 km from Miami Beach, and close to Fort Lauderdale itself
by road
Fort Lauderdale Executive to Miami
about 47 km from the centre of Miami, for a party whose business is in Broward County
by road
Miami Executive to the centre of Miami
about 28 km to the south-west, the field for the south of the county and the road to the Keys
by road
Palm Beach to Miami
about 102 km north of the centre of Miami, which is why it suits Palm Beach and nothing in the city
by road
Miami Gardens and Hard Rock Stadium
a suburb about 26 km north of downtown that hosts the Grand Prix and the tennis, so a stadium weekend sends the party to the north of the county
by road

Flying to Miami with a dog or a cat

The United States asks for little paperwork on the way in and more on the way home. The animal sits with you in the cabin, and the flight is long enough that most dogs sleep through it. What matters is the timing of three documents: the CDC import receipt for a dog, the rabies record that Florida wants to see, and the certificate for the return to Britain, which has a short life.

private flight with animals

What the two countries ask for:

  • For a dog, a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, which is free and covers one dog. The United Kingdom is not on the CDC list of countries at high risk for dog rabies, so the lighter rules apply: the dog must look healthy on arrival, be at least six months old and carry a microchip that a universal scanner can read. A dog from such a country may enter through any port of entry, so Opa-locka and Fort Lauderdale both work;
  • Florida asks for proof of a current rabies vaccination for any dog or cat of three months and older. Its health certificate requirement does not apply to a privately owned pet travelling with its owner;
  • For the return to Britain, the United States is a "part 2" listed country: a Great Britain pet health certificate completed by an official vet and dated in the ten days before arrival, with a pet passport or animal health certificate not accepted. The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old, and the microchip must have been fitted before or at the same time as the vaccine. The official text lists no blood test for these countries;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. Cats are exempt. No more than five animals per traveller.

What catches owners out on the Miami run

– The certificate for the way home has to be dated inside ten days of arrival, so a two-week stay means a vet appointment in Florida, and the tapeworm treatment has its own window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. Book both before you leave Britain;

– A dog under six months old cannot enter under the CDC rule, so a puppy is a reason to move the trip and not the paperwork;

– Miami is hot for much of the year, and an animal waiting on an apron suffers sooner than a person. Plan the walk before departure, and check that the hotel, the yacht and any helicopter operator accept the animal separately.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. We also confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal on the way back into Britain.

The Miami calendar: an art fair, a boat show and a hurricane season

Miami runs on a calendar of fixed weeks, and the weather has a say as well. The winter months bring the fairs, the boat show and the tennis, spring brings the Grand Prix, and late summer and autumn bring the storms. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

February
The Miami International Boat Show, held every February at Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin on Virginia Key, with a sailing show at Miamarina at Bayside Marketplace. Yacht buyers and owners fly in for a few days, and cars and rooms near the water tighten
Late March and early April

November to April
The dry season, and the best weather for flying and for a day on the water. Most of the events above fall inside it, so the winter is also when aircraft, rooms and cars are hardest to find

Why an event week costs more

The flight itself costs what it always does. The long-range fleet that can cross the Atlantic is much smaller than the Europe-only fleet, and the aircraft that suit Miami are wanted on the same days from New York and Europe. What tightens is parking at Opa-locka, the better cars and the crew duty hours. A booking made a fortnight before Art Week can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft brought across the ocean empty. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the peaks a crossing can usually be arranged within a few days.

Ways to bring the Miami price down

  • Pick the aircraft for the ocean, not for the cabin photographs. A Challenger 605 with a stop in the Azores costs noticeably less than a long-range jet and takes about two hours longer in the air, plus the ground time; for four people that is a fair trade;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A long-range jet coming from London needs less positioning than one coming from Dubai or the American west coast, and on a transatlantic sector positioning is a large share of the bill;
  • Be flexible by a day or two. A flight that avoids Art Week and the boat show is easier to price, and a return that fits an empty leg is cheaper than a fresh charter.

Types of flights

Miami produces its own mix of trips, because it is a beach, a port, an art fair and a stepping stone to the Caribbean at the same time.

  • Family and leisure trips from Britain, to a rented house, a hotel on Miami Beach or a winter stay in Palm Beach, often combined with the Keys or the Bahamas;
  • Cruise and yacht links, because PortMiami is the world's busiest cruise port and parties often fly in the day before a sailing or a yacht handover;
  • Art, design and fashion visits around Art Week, with small delegations, fixed dates and a taste for discretion at the terminal;
  • Sporting weekends, from the Grand Prix to the tennis at Hard Rock Stadium, which tie the flight to a date set by the organisers;
  • Onward journeys to the Bahamas, Key West and the north-east, using Miami as the port of entry to the United States and a lighter aircraft from there.

One-way or return deserves a second look. Over this distance a return within the week is priced as two separate sectors plus the crew's rest and hotel in Miami, so we quote both versions. For a short stay, keeping the aircraft in Florida and flying home on the third day usually beats flying it back empty and fetching it again, while after a week or more two one-way charters are simpler than a jet standing idle.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight that nobody is paying for, offered to a passenger at a fraction of the normal price. In Florida the supply follows the season more than the volume of traffic, and it helps to know where it comes from.

Where Miami empty legs come from

– Event weeks. Aircraft arrive full for Art Week or the boat show and leave empty a day or two later, so the northbound and eastbound sectors both appear in the days after;

– Transatlantic positioning. A long-range jet that has taken a party from London to Miami often has to return, and that empty crossing is the one most worth looking for;

– Florida rotation. Aircraft based in the state and in the north-east move between Miami, Palm Beach and New York, and the short legs between them can be cheap.

The long-range fleet is small, so a client who can offer three days stands a much better chance than one who needs a particular evening. The price of the discount is control: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can disappear when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Miami match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In Miami a helicopter is a tool for the water and the last mile, and not for the long haul. Biscayne Bay, the causeways and the coast give a good view, but landing sites in a built-up area are limited, so most helicopter work starts at an airport or a prepared helipad. Helicopter charters from Miami to the Bahamas are advertised, and those flights go over open water.

Opa-locka to Miami Beach
a straight-line distance of about 17 km across the bay, a short scenic or dinner transfer once the landing site is agreed
on request
Opa-locka to Fort Lauderdale
13 nautical miles up the coast, for an address in Broward County or a yacht
on request
Miami to Nassau
168 nautical miles over open water; helicopter charters on this run are offered, but a fixed-wing aircraft is the usual choice
on request
Miami to Key West
119 nautical miles down the island chain, a scenic day trip
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A hotel roof, a marina or a private property needs its landing status and the owner's consent confirmed before the quote, not after;

– Weather sets the schedule. Summer thunderstorms and tropical systems can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a coastal transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– A twin-engine machine is the sensible minimum over open water. For Art Week and the Grand Prix, book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is no rotary capacity.

For scenic work the usual choice is the Airbus H125, for villa and marina transfers the roomier H130, and where a twin is wanted the H135 or the Bell 429. We book the helicopter alongside the jet, so that both crews follow one timetable.

Miami charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

NONSTOP · THE LONG-RANGE CABIN

Six people, one stretch of the Atlantic

Farnborough - Miami Opa-locka, Bombardier Global 6000, about 8 h 50 min · 6 pax

A family party leaving mid-morning and landing for a late lunch, with a villa on the beach waiting. The reason for the larger cabin was less the seats than the luggage and the wish to cross without a stop. They arrived at Opa-locka, cleared the border at the terminal and were in the car within a short time of the aircraft door opening.

AZORES STOP · THE SENSIBLE COMPROMISE

Four people, a Challenger and an hour on Santa Maria

Biggin Hill - Miami Opa-locka, Bombardier Challenger 605, about 10 h 45 min plus a stop · 4 pax

A smaller party that wanted to keep the budget down. The aircraft cannot fly the whole distance against the usual westbound wind, so the quote included a stop in the Azores, a turn of about an hour with fuel and a stretch of the legs. The saving over a long-range jet was large enough that nobody argued about the extra hours.

ART WEEK · FIXED DATES

A group for the opening days in December

London Luton - Miami Opa-locka, Gulfstream G550, about 8 h 50 min · 8 pax

The dates were set by the fair and not by the client. Eight people, tight schedules and a request for a quiet arrival. The booking went in six weeks ahead, the handler pre-arranged the border check at the terminal and the return was booked at the same time, which kept the aircraft and crew on the ground in Florida for the week.

THE BIG AIRPORT · NOT THE DEFAULT

A client who asked for Miami International by name

Farnborough - Miami Opa-locka, Bombardier Global 6000, about 8 h 50 min · 5 pax

They had seen the airport on the map and asked for it directly. The ramp for private aircraft at the big airport needs permission three hours ahead and does not accept a wingspan over 78 ft, so we explained the trade and landed at Opa-locka, a short way north, with a car at the terminal. The decision took one call.

A DOG ON BOARD · TWO PIECES OF PAPER

Three adults and a labrador for a ten-day stay

Edinburgh - Miami Opa-locka, Gulfstream G550, about 8 h 35 min · 3 pax + dog

The CDC Dog Import Form receipt was ready before departure, and the Great Britain pet health certificate for the way home had to be dated inside ten days of the return flight. The tapeworm treatment fell between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain. The vet appointments were booked in Florida before the family flew out, and the dog slept most of the crossing.

EMPTY LEG · THE WAY HOME

A jet already going your way

Miami Opa-locka - London Stansted, Bombardier Global 6000 empty leg, about 7 h 35 min · 4 pax

The aircraft had brought a party over for a long weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an eastbound night departure that landed in Britain in time for breakfast.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Miami

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Miami?

About 8 h 50 min nonstop in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, and a little less from Edinburgh or Glasgow in a Gulfstream G550. A Challenger 605 needs a stop in the Azores and takes about 10 h 45 min in the air plus an hour on the ground. The routed distance to Opa-locka is between 3,808 and 4,009 nautical miles depending on the British airfield, and Miami is five hours behind Britain for most of the year.

2How much does a private jet to Miami cost?

From about £88,150 one way for a Challenger 605 from Biggin Hill with a stop in the Azores. A nonstop long-range jet starts from about £106,400 from Manchester and £108,350 from Farnborough, and a Gulfstream G550 from Edinburgh starts from about £109,800. Event weeks in December, February and May cost more, and an empty leg can cost far less. The calculator on this page gives an indicative figure for your dates.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Miami?

Opa-locka (OPF / KOPF) for most trips. It is about 17 km from the centre of Miami, has five handlers, customs on the field and an 8,002 ft main runway. Miami International (MIA / KMIA) is the big airline airport, with a private ramp that needs permission three hours ahead and does not accept a wingspan over 78 ft. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Palm Beach suit parties bound for the north, Fort Lauderdale Executive and Miami Executive suit lighter jets, and we choose by your destination and by customs hours.

4Do British passengers need a visa or an ESTA to fly to Miami?

British citizens need no visa for business or tourism for up to 90 days, but they need an approved ESTA and a passport valid for the length of the stay. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry, and it may not be enough for business done on behalf of a US company or after an arrest or an earlier overstay. The pilot files the passenger manifest before departure and customs clears the party at the private terminal. Apply for the ESTA through the official site only, and well ahead of the flight. On a private aircraft it normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote.

5Can I fly on from Miami to the Bahamas, Key West or New York?

Yes, and a smaller aircraft is the usual choice for the second leg. Nassau is 168 nautical miles away and a Citation CJ3+ starts from £5,300, Key West is 119 nautical miles, from £3,100 in a Pilatus PC-12, and Teterboro near New York is 987 nautical miles, from £20,250 in a Citation Latitude. A foreign aircraft may carry passengers within the United States only if they arrived on it from abroad or leave on it for abroad, so some domestic legs are flown by a US-registered aircraft.

6Can I take my dog to Miami on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Going out you need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, and the dog must be at least six months old, healthy and microchipped; Florida also wants proof of a current rabies vaccination. For the return, the United States is a part 2 country: a Great Britain pet health certificate dated in the ten days before arrival, a rabies vaccine at least 21 days old, and for dogs a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork in writing for your dates.
