Private jet charter in Nigeria
Lagos lies 2,800 nautical miles from London, further than a light or midsize jet can fly without landing, and an Embraer Praetor 600 makes the sector in about 6 h 35 min. That single fact shapes a Nigerian charter more than any other: the aircraft has to be chosen for its range first and its cabin second. Private Jets UK plans these trips around four points: the long sector, a permit issued for the right category of operator, the choice between Lagos, Abuja and the other gateways, and the Foreign Office advice for the area you are going to. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Nigeria that means the landing and overflight permits, a handler at the business aviation terminal, fuel arranged and paid for in advance, a car and, where the programme requires it, a Nigerian operator for the domestic sectors.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Nigeria depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Lagos, nonstop, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Nigeria?
Nigeria keeps West Africa Time, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time all year round and with no change in summer. The clock on arrival is therefore an hour ahead of Britain in winter and the same as British Summer Time from spring to autumn. These are the sectors from London Biggin Hill on a Praetor 600, gate to gate:
2,490 nautical miles, the airport of the north, with a civil runway of 3,301 metresabout 5 h 55 min
2,669 nautical miles, the federal capital, with a business aviation wing of its ownabout 6 h 15 min
2,800 nautical miles, the commercial capital and the gateway for nearly every charterabout 6 h 35 min
2,914 nautical miles, the oil city of the Niger Delta, a 3,000 metre runway open round the clockabout 6 h 50 min
Why the aircraft decides everything on this route
A Praetor 600, a Challenger 605 and the larger types fly London to Lagos in one hop and still carry fuel for a diversion. A light jet such as the Phenom 300E, and a midsize jet such as the Citation XLS+, have ranges of roughly 2,000 nautical miles, so they stop in the Canaries first. The stop typically adds about an hour for the landing and the fuel uplift.
The saving from a smaller aircraft is real but narrow. From Biggin Hill a Phenom 300E through Gran Canaria prices at about £40,700 and takes about 8 h 50 min gate to gate, while a Citation XLS+ on the same routing comes to about £50,650, more than the £44,700 asked for a Praetor 600 that flies straight through. The second leg from Gran Canaria is 1,733 nautical miles, close to the limit of a light jet with a full cabin, so we check the payload before we quote it.
From the north and the long days
Manchester is 2,935 nautical miles from Lagos and Edinburgh 3,101, against 2,800 from Biggin Hill. A Challenger 605 on the Edinburgh sector runs to about 7 h 15 min. A same-day return from London is possible on paper, but the crew's duty day is used up on the way out, so the aircraft stays overnight and the programme is built around that.
The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Prices for the private jet flights to Nigeria
Typical private jet charter prices from Britain into Nigeria, listed cheapest first. The entry price is Lagos on a Praetor 600 from Biggin Hill, because that is the aircraft class that crosses without a stop and the airport where the business aviation handlers are concentrated. The table then climbs with the distance from the north of Britain and with the size of the cabin:

Reading the price table
– The Nigerian end moves the price. Abuja is 131 nautical miles closer to Biggin Hill than Lagos and Port Harcourt is 114 further, which on a Praetor 600 is about £2,000 less into the capital and about £1,700 more into the delta. Each hundred miles adds roughly £1,500 on this aircraft. The rows for Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt in the table are priced on larger aircraft, so that the headline figure stays the Lagos one, and the Foreign Office advice for those areas is set out further down the page;
– A quote for Nigeria lists the landing and overflight permits, the handler's fee, parking, fuel and the crew's hotel as lines of their own. Fuel is typically prepaid through a fuel release, because credit is not usually extended to a visiting operator. When two quotes for the same trip differ, the gap usually sits in those lines and in the choice of stop, not in the flying.
Private jet flights within Nigeria and to its neighbours
Nigeria is large. Lagos and Abuja are 287 nautical miles apart, Lagos to Kano is 468, and the scheduled airlines connect all the big cities, but a private aircraft takes the timetable out of the equation. These are the hops we are asked for, and the neighbouring capitals that clients combine with a Nigerian trip:

Domestic sectors and the neighbours
– A British aircraft does not usually fly them with passengers. Carrying passengers between two points in another country is called cabotage, and aviation law in most countries reserves it for local operators, so the sectors between Nigerian cities are typically flown by a Nigerian operator with an air operator certificate. The jet that brought you from London waits at Lagos or returns to base. We name the operator for each leg when we quote;
– The neighbours are a separate matter. Benin, Togo, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal each have their own permit, visa and handling rules, so a hop from Lagos to Accra or Cotonou is a new international trip with a new permit. The lines in the table are straight-line estimates, not a promise that a slot exists for a given date.
We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.

Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Nigeria:
Turboprops
The aircraft for short regional hops on the ground in West Africa, not for the journey from London. Lagos to Cotonou or Lome is under an hour in either, and both are comfortable on the longer runways of the big airports.
Light and midsize jets
These need a fuel stop in the Canaries on the way out from Britain and suit four to six people with soft bags. On the coastal hops to Accra, Lome or Cotonou they are a sensible choice, and between Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt they are fast enough.
Super-midsize
The first class that crosses to Lagos in one hop from London. The Praetor 600 sets the entry price on this route, and the Challenger 350 has the range from southern England with less margin from the north.
Heavy jets
For a delegation, or a family with staff and luggage. A Challenger 605, Legacy 650 or Falcon 2000LXS flies from anywhere in Britain without a stop and keeps a reserve for the weather over the Gulf of Guinea.
Ultra-long range
The Global 6000 and the Gulfstreams save about half an hour on the sector and carry up to 16 people, which matters for a corporate group or an official party.

Because Nigerian sectors usually need a Nigerian operator, the quote for a trip that continues to Abuja or Port Harcourt often shows two aircraft, the long-range jet from Britain and a smaller one on home ground.

Business aviation airports in Nigeria
Nigeria has four airports that routinely take international business traffic, and Lagos is the one where we can name the FBOs. Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano are listed as airports of entry that operate round the clock. Two more fields, Uyo and Enugu, matter for particular errands:
| Airport | Ground | How it operates |
|---|---|---|
| Lagos, Murtala Muhammed International LOS / DNMM |
in Ikeja, about 25 km from downtown by road | Two parallel asphalt runways, 18R/36L of 3,900 metres and 18L/36R of 2,743 metres, and customs and immigration officers listed as available round the clock. Business aviation has its own area beside the main terminal, with three handlers, ExecuJet, EAN Jet Centre and Nestav, each controlling its own ramp. The general aviation apron is listed as holding about eight mid-sized jets, with no slot system and fuel delivered by bowser |
| Abuja, Nnamdi Azikiwe International ABV / DNAA |
about 20 km south-west of the city centre | One asphalt runway, 04/22, of 3,610 metres, with an instrument landing system. The airport has a private jet wing for business, diplomatic and official traffic. Operator guidance lists a general aviation apron on the south side, round-the-clock customs at the general aviation terminal and busy mornings between 07:00 and 10:00 local time. The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the Federal Capital Territory |
| Port Harcourt International PHC / DNPO |
at Omagwa, serving the capital of Rivers State | Runway 03/21 of 3,000 metres, listed as open round the clock with customs and immigration. The airport serves the oil and gas industry of the Niger Delta, and the Golden Tulip and Novotel hotels are 10 to 15 minutes from the terminal. Handling is arranged through authorised local companies, and we confirm the arrangements for each flight. The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the non-riverine parts of Rivers State and against all travel to the riverine areas |
| Kano, Mallam Aminu Kano International KAN / DNKN |
serving Kano, in the north | Runway 06/24 of 3,301 metres for civil flights, beside a 2,451 metre runway that mainly serves the air force base. Listed as an airport of entry. Much of the international traffic is pilgrim flights to Mecca. The Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to Kano State |
| Uyo, Akwa Ibom International QUO / DNAI |
about 24 km south-east of Uyo | A 3.6 km runway, 03/21, and a maintenance hangar big enough for two Boeing 747-400 aircraft side by side. A regional field in Akwa Ibom State, with access and handling confirmed flight by flight. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to the riverine areas of the state |
| Enugu, Akanu Ibiam International ENU / DNEN |
serving the south-east | A 3,000 metre runway, 08/26, shared with a Nigerian Air Force base that includes a helicopter training school. A useful alternate for the south-east, though permission and handling are confirmed for each flight |
Five rules settle most Nigerian arrivals before a quote goes out:
The permit follows the category
A private flight is issued a permit for non-commercial flights, while a charter flight is issued an airline operating permit, which requires the operator to hold an air operator certificate. Privately registered aircraft may not be used for hire in Nigeria, so a charter is arranged with a licensed operator.
Lead time and the weekend
Operator guidance asks for the application at least 48 hours ahead, with the aviation authority sometimes issuing on 24 hours' notice. The permit office has typically been closed from Friday afternoon until Monday morning and on public holidays, so a Friday request for Monday morning is risky.
Short validity
Permits are issued against the aircraft, schedule and route submitted. One source gives a window of roughly 48 hours either side of the planned time, another lists landing permits at international airports as valid for 24 hours, so we plan on the shorter figure. A change of date, aircraft or crew is notified before departure.
Papers for the permit
The registration and airworthiness certificates, noise certificate, worldwide insurance, crew licences and passport copies, the full route with entry and exit points of the Nigerian flight information region and, for passengers, the manifest. The permit number is kept ready because air traffic control may ask for it on descent.
Fuel and the crew
Jet A-1 is typically paid in advance, either in cash or through a fuel release accepted by the supplier, and is delivered by bowser on the business aviation apron. Crew in uniform with identification are typically admitted for up to 72 hours on the general declaration.
The FBOs at Lagos
ExecuJet, part of Luxaviation, runs a facility with a 4,700 square metre hangar able to take a Boeing Business Jet, a 25,500 square metre apron with direct access to the main runway and taxiway, and listed customs and immigration facilities. EAN Jet Centre, built by Evergreen Apple Nigeria, offers a VIP lounge, a crew lounge, a flight planning office, conference rooms, a hangar and a restaurant that supplies inflight catering. Nestav is the third handler listed on the same apron. Which of the three we use depends on the aircraft, the parking and the programme, and the choice is written into the quote.
Arriving from Britain: visa, vaccination and the Foreign Office advice
A British passport alone will not do. The visa has to be in hand before the aircraft leaves, the yellow fever certificate has to be in the traveller's folder, and the permit for the aircraft is a third piece of paper with its own lead time.
British citizens need a visa for a visit to Nigeria, obtained before travel through the online portal. A visa on arrival is not available, and a holder of a valid Nigerian residence permit needs no visaapply first
valid for at least six months after the day of arrival, and not reported lost or stolencheck the expiry
a vaccination certificate is required, with exemptions for infants aged eight months or younger and for adults aged 61 or olderget the certificate early
landing and departure cards may be asked for at the airport, and they can be completed through the online portalwe send the link
anything that is prohibited or subject to tax or duty must be declared, and exporting African art, antiques in particular, needs written authorisation from the Department of Antiquitiesread the list before you pack
typically admitted for up to 72 hours on the general declaration, so a longer layover is arranged beforehandwe confirm with the handler
The Foreign Office advice, as published
The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe, to Katsina, Zamfara and Sokoto, and to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River, which are the river and swamp locations reached by boat.
It advises against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue, to Abia, Anambra and Imo, to the non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers, and to the Federal Capital Territory, which includes Abuja. Lagos State appears in neither list. Travel insurance may be invalid for a journey made against the advice, so we ask clients to speak to their insurer and their security adviser before they accept a quote for any of these areas. Our planning follows the published advice.
Clearance and the way home
On arrival, passengers and crew clear immigration and customs. The Lagos FBOs list customs and immigration facilities of their own, so a party can be cleared beside the aircraft instead of in the main terminal, and the handler confirms the arrangement for your flight. At Abuja the customs desk at the business aviation terminal is listed as staffed round the clock.
Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. Passengers who hold another passport should check their own entry rules before they fly.

Which airport for which part of Nigeria
The airport follows the errand, and in Nigeria the errand decides the city. Distances inside the country are large, so the right gateway saves a flight or a day. These are the usual pairings:
the commercial capital and the main business district. Lagos Island is about 28 km from the airport, which is 30 minutes by car in clear traffic and 45 to 60 minutes at rush hourLagos
government, embassies and the federal ministries, with the airport about 20 km south-west of the centre. Foreign Office advice: all but essential travelAbuja
the base for the oil and gas industry of the delta, with international hotels ten to fifteen minutes from the airportPort Harcourt
a state in the south with its own international airport 24 km from UyoUyo
an airport with a 3,000 metre runway, shared with an air force baseEnugu
the main airport of the north, with a long civil runway. Foreign Office advice: all but essential travelKano
Lagos, Abuja and the oil coast: what our clients go for
Lagos is where most of the business is done. Victoria Island is the main business district, and the executives who fly in by private jet usually plan their days around the traffic and not around the flight. The roads are heaviest in the afternoon and evening and on Mondays and Fridays, and a meeting booked for the end of the day can mean a night at the hotel and an early departure.
Hotels and cars are arranged with the permit. A chauffeured car from the aircraft steps is standard practice for visiting parties, and the handlers arrange secure transport where the client asks for it.
Abuja is a city of ministries and embassies. The private jet wing at Nnamdi Azikiwe handles business, diplomatic and official traffic, and the hotels used by visiting delegations, among them the Transcorp Hilton, the Sheraton and Hawthorn Suites, are 25 to 40 minutes from the airport. On days of official movements the ground can be held for half an hour or more, which is worth allowing for when a meeting follows the landing.
Port Harcourt works for energy. Clients flying into the delta are usually oil and gas executives and contractors, and the trips are short: land, meet, return. A private aircraft saves the connections through Lagos or Abuja, and the Golden Tulip and Novotel hotels are close to the airport.
The Nigerian year: the dry months, the rains and the harmattan
The south has a long rainy season and a shorter dry one, and the harmattan arrives with the dry months. Rain and haze rarely cancel a flight, but they decide how much margin the plan carries:
the dry season and the cooler months in Lagos, with the harmattan wind bringing drier air. December is often called the best month to visithigh season
the harmattan can occasionally reduce visibility at Abuja and in the north, so the diversion plan is checked with the handlerallow a margin
the rainy season, with June and July the wettest months in Lagos and heavy downpours that can flood roads. Abuja is listed with daily thunderstorms from April to Octoberwet season
hot and humid, with the rains easing and the events calendar picking up again from Octobershoulder
Weather and the price
The season hardly changes what the flight costs, since the permit and the apron are what fix the plan. It changes the ground programme. In the rains we keep road transfers short and leave slack in the schedule, because a flooded road can lose more time than the aircraft saves.
The Nigerian calendar: festivals, fairs and the December crowd
Most of the big dates belong to Lagos, and the festivals move from year to year, so the organisers' announcements are checked before a booking:
December and the apron
Nigeria has few airports with real business aviation facilities, so the pressure falls on the apron at Lagos, on hotels and cars and on the permit desk. The business aviation apron at Lagos is listed as holding about eight mid-sized jets, and in December it fills. Detty December is also reported to strain the roads and the infrastructure, so we ask for the parking space, the crew hotel and the car together, and we allow extra time on every transfer.

Flying to Nigeria with a dog or a cat
A pet can travel in the cabin of a private jet, but the paperwork for Nigeria is a matter of weeks and not days. The destination asks for an import permit in advance, a health certificate signed shortly before departure, and the journey home falls under the stricter British rules for countries outside the simple pet scheme.
Permit first, flight second
An approved import permit is required for a personal pet entering Nigeria. How the permit is obtained, what it costs and how long it takes is set by the Nigerian veterinary authorities, and we ask the owner to start with the permit and not with the flight.
On the way home Nigeria does not appear among the countries with the simple route into Britain, so the rules for non-listed countries apply. We check the position on gov.uk for your dates before we confirm the aircraft.
- An ISO microchip of 15 digits that is not encrypted, fitted before the vaccination, with the number on every certificate;
- A rabies vaccination given not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months before entry. A rabies antibody titre test, taken no sooner than 30 days after the first vaccination, is needed where the pet was vaccinated at the 30-day minimum or the schedule is unclear;
- A bilingual health certificate completed by a licensed vet within 48 hours of entry and endorsed by the government veterinary service of the country of origin;
- Treatment against internal and external parasites shortly before travel;
- Presentation at the airport of entry. Third-party guidance lists Lagos and Abuja as the airports that receive pets, and we confirm the entry point with the handler before the flight. A pet that meets the conditions is listed as not quarantined.
Coming home, a pet from a non-listed country needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, then a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample before the animal travels. The wait does not apply if the animal was vaccinated, blood-tested and given a British health certificate or an EU pet passport before it left for the non-listed country, which is why we ask owners to do the tests before the outward flight. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. No more than five animals may travel with one person, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.
We tell the handler in advance and confirm in writing which entry point will receive the animal and which papers are needed. Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species are set out in our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Nigerian run the sector is long, so the saving is large in absolute terms even when the percentage is the same as anywhere else.
Where Nigerian empty legs come from
– A charter that lands in Lagos and does not wait: the aircraft returns to Europe empty, and the leg home is the one most often offered;
– The weeks around the December holidays, when aircraft arrive full for the festive season and leave empty a few days later;
– Aircraft that fly to West Africa for another contract and are repositioned through Lagos on the way back.
A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Nigerian empty legs follows:
| Route | Aircraft | Capacity | Whole aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria (Lagos) - UK (London Biggin Hill) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £18,750 |
| Nigeria (Lagos) - UK (Bristol) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £18,850 |
| UK (London Luton) - Nigeria (Lagos) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £19,000 |
| UK (Manchester) - Nigeria (Lagos) | Praetor 600 | 9 seats | £19,650 |
| Nigeria (Lagos) - UK (Birmingham) | Challenger 605 | 12 seats | £24,650 |
| UK (Farnborough) - Nigeria (Lagos) | Legacy 650 | 13 seats | £25,400 |
| UK (Edinburgh) - Nigeria (Lagos) | Challenger 605 | 12 seats | £26,450 |
| Nigeria (Lagos) - UK (London Gatwick) | Falcon 2000LXS | 10 seats | £26,950 |
What the empty-leg prices mean
– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Manchester to Lagos with nine aboard works out at about £2,200 a seat, and with four aboard about £4,900;
– The permit and the visa are still needed for an empty leg that carries passengers, so the lead time is the same as for a normal charter, and the yellow fever certificate cannot be skipped because the flight is cheap.

Helicopter charter
Helicopters in Nigeria are a working tool of the oil and gas industry first and a luxury second. Caverton Helicopters, which offers charter and maintenance for the oil and gas sector, runs an executive flight facility at Murtala Muhammed airport in Lagos as its main base. For a private client the useful jobs are short ones:
28 km by road and 30 to 60 minutes in the car, depending on the hourabout 15 min
between the delta and the south-east without the roadabout 1 h
the capital to the south-east, in place of a long driveabout 1 h 30 min
across the border into Benin, which needs its own permitabout 40 min
The times are straight-line estimates at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the route for your date. A helicopter that flies passengers between two Nigerian places is a Nigerian one, and a landing at a hotel, a private site or an oil facility needs the landing site agreed in advance.
Rotary legs and the advice
Daylight is the limit. A helicopter leg in the delta, the south-east or the north is planned with the Foreign Office advice for the area in front of us, and we do not quote a landing in an area where it advises against all travel. In Lagos the saving is on the ground: a short hop over the traffic when the schedule cannot absorb a long drive.

Flights from the UK to Nigeria
Biggin Hill and Farnborough are the south-east business aviation airfields best suited to a long sector, with Luton, Gatwick, Stansted and London City as the other London options, and Southampton, Bristol and Birmingham further out. Manchester is 135 nautical miles further from Lagos than Biggin Hill, which adds about £2,050 on a Praetor 600, and Edinburgh, at 3,101 nautical miles, is flown on a Challenger 605 with a longer day. The table below lists the British airports we work with:

Nigerian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.
LAGOS · ONE NIGHT ON THE GROUND
Two directors and a signing
Biggin Hill - Lagos and return, Praetor 600, about 6 h 35 min each way · 2 pax
The visas and the yellow fever certificates were in hand before we asked for the permit. The handler held a parking space on the business aviation apron, a car met the aircraft, and the meeting on Victoria Island was fitted between the morning and the evening rush.
LAGOS · DECEMBER WITH THE FAMILY
Eight people for the holiday month
London Luton - Lagos, Challenger 605, about 6 h 40 min · 8 pax
A family travelling with staff booked in October for the third week of December. We asked for the parking space, the crew hotel and the cars together, because in that month all three run short, and the aircraft returned empty a few days later.
PORT HARCOURT · A TECHNICAL TEAM
Four engineers heading for the delta
Southampton - Port Harcourt, Legacy 650, about 6 h 50 min · 4 pax
The company's security adviser and insurer were consulted before the quote was accepted, because the Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the non-riverine parts of Rivers State. Hotels near the airport were chosen to keep the road transfer short.
ABUJA · TWO AIRCRAFT
A delegation going on to the capital
Manchester - Lagos, Praetor 600, about 6 h 50 min, then Lagos - Abuja on a Nigerian jet, about 1 h 10 min · 6 pax
A British aircraft does not usually carry passengers between two Nigerian cities, so the delegation changed at Lagos to a Nigerian operator's jet. Our quote showed both operators and the transfer between them, and the party took the Foreign Office advice for the Federal Capital Territory to their own security team.
WITH THE DOG · TEN WEEKS OF PAPER
A couple and a retriever bound for a long stay
Biggin Hill - Lagos, Praetor 600, about 6 h 35 min · 2 pax + dog
The import permit came first and set the date. The owners had the dog vaccinated and blood-tested for the British return before leaving, which meant no three-month wait at home, and the tapeworm treatment was given within the five-day window before the flight back.
EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE FESTIVE SEASON
A flexible return from Lagos
Lagos - Birmingham, Challenger 605 empty leg, about 6 h 45 min · 5 pax
The client gave us a window of three days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £24,650, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a Wednesday departure.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Nigeria
1How long does it take to fly to Nigeria by private jet?
About 6 hours 35 minutes from London to Lagos on a Praetor 600, without a stop. A light jet such as the Phenom 300E needs a fuel stop in Gran Canaria and takes about 8 hours 50 minutes. Nigeria keeps West Africa Time all year, one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
2How much does a private jet to Nigeria cost?
From about £44,700 one way from Biggin Hill to Lagos on a Praetor 600. The same aircraft is about £2,000 less into Abuja and about £1,700 more into Port Harcourt, and a Challenger 605 from Edinburgh to Lagos is about £63,000. Hops inside the region are far lower, with Lagos to Cotonou from £3,100 on a turboprop. Permits, handling, parking, fuel and the crew's hotel are quoted as lines of their own.
3Which airports do private jets use in Nigeria?
Lagos Murtala Muhammed is the gateway, with the ExecuJet, EAN Jet Centre and Nestav handlers beside the main terminal. Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano are the other airports of entry, listed as open round the clock. Uyo and Enugu are regional fields. A British aircraft does not usually carry passengers between two Nigerian airports, so a trip that continues from Lagos uses a Nigerian operator for the domestic sector.
4What are the visa, health and permit rules for a private flight from Britain to Nigeria?
British citizens need a visa obtained before travel, because a visa on arrival is not available. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required. The aircraft needs a landing permit and an overflight permit, which operator guidance asks to be requested at least 48 hours ahead, and a charter must be flown by an operator with an air operator certificate. The flight home needs a General Aviation Report filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure.
5What does the Foreign Office advise about travel to Nigeria?
It advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, Zamfara and Sokoto and to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. It advises against all but essential travel to the Federal Capital Territory including Abuja, to Kano, Kaduna, Plateau and several other states, and to the non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers. Lagos State appears in neither list. Insurance may be invalid for travel against the advice, so we recommend speaking to your insurer and security adviser before you accept a quote.
6Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Nigeria?
Yes, with planning of several weeks. Nigeria requires an approved import permit, an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry, and a health certificate completed by a vet within 48 hours of entry and endorsed by the government veterinary service. For the return, Britain applies its rules for non-listed countries, including a rabies blood test, and a dog needs tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing.
7How early should I book a private jet to Nigeria?
As soon as the dates are known, and at least two weeks ahead as a working minimum, since the visa has to be in hand before departure and the permit is requested at least 48 hours before the flight. The permit office has typically been closed from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, so a late change can wait for the next working day. December is the busiest month, with parking, crew hotels and cars in short supply.
