Private jet charter in Washington
The American capital lies about 3,100 to 3,300 nautical miles from London, a crossing that a super-midsize jet can fly nonstop and a midsize jet cannot, and the airspace around the city leaves the choice of landing field far narrower than the map suggests. Private Jets UK charters the aircraft that the crossing demands and the airfield that the rules of the capital allow. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Washington receives its flights from abroad at Dulles, 39 km to the west of the centre, while the city airport at Reagan National is open to private charters only under a federal security programme, and a ring of smaller fields fills the gaps, so the real decisions are which airfield, which cabin and which week.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Washington depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. On a sector of more than three thousand nautical miles the choice between a nonstop super-midsize cabin and a midsize jet with a stop in Newfoundland moves the price more than any other item. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, an Embraer Praetor 600 flying nonstop to Washington Dulles and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Washington?
The nonstop flight from London to Washington takes about 8 h 05 min in a Praetor 600 from Farnborough, and a little less from Scotland and Northern England. The routed distance to Dulles runs from 3,099 to 3,335 nautical miles depending on the British field. Embraer publishes a range of 3,900 nautical miles for the Praetor 600, quoted with four passengers, so the margin over the crossing is 565 to 801 nautical miles before the westbound headwind is counted. The Challenger 605 class is published at about 4,000 and the Global 6000 at 6,000. A Challenger 350, published at 3,200, falls short of the sector from London, and a Citation Latitude at about 2,500 cannot fly it at all; both cross in two legs with a stop at Gander in Newfoundland. Washington keeps Eastern time, five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure lands around midday. The times below assume the headwind the North Atlantic normally supplies on the way west. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall
Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning, British time, and you land at Dulles at about 12:05 Washington time, which puts a late lunch in town within reach if the car is waiting at the handler's door. Dulles is 39 km from the centre of Washington in a straight line and Reagan National only 6 km, so the choice of airport matters more to the drive than to the flight, and the road is longer than the line on the map. Coming home the sums run the other way. The eastbound crossing takes about 6 h 15 min in a Global 6000 with the wind behind, but it is normally flown overnight, so the party lands in Britain the next morning with a night in a seat instead of a bed.
Nonstop or one stop: the question that decides the aircraft
– A super-midsize such as the Praetor 600 flies London to Washington nonstop. Its published 3,900 nautical miles are quoted with four passengers, so a full cabin of eight or nine is checked against the operator's figures for your date and load. This is the cheapest nonstop answer on the route, and it is usually the first aircraft we quote;
– A Challenger 605, Global or Gulfstream flies the crossing with margin to spare, and is the answer for a larger party, long luggage lists and anyone who wants the biggest cabin. A Challenger 350 is published at 3,200 nautical miles against 3,099 to 3,335 for the crossing, which only just covers the crossing from Glasgow or Edinburgh and falls short of the crossing from every London field, so we plan it with a stop;
– A midsize jet such as the Citation Latitude, at about 2,500 nautical miles, crosses with one stop at Gander. Gander sits almost on the track and adds no more than 18 nautical miles to the route, but the stop costs an hour on the ground and a second landing, and it prices above the nonstop Praetor: from Luton, £64,150 against £52,400. Light jets and turboprops do not cross as a rule, and the smaller aircraft is booked locally for the onward legs along the coast.

Why the short legs are the cheap part
A trip to Washington is usually priced as one long crossing and a few short hops, and the hops cost a fraction of the crossing. A flight from Dulles to Teterboro in a Citation CJ3+ starts at £5,300, against £52,350 for the Atlantic leg in a Praetor 600 from Farnborough, so a day in New York barely changes the total. The sensible way to plan it is to book the larger aircraft for the ocean and ask us to quote the smaller jet separately, since a light jet based on the East Coast will almost always beat a transatlantic jet left on the apron at Dulles for the week.
Before you accept a quote for a Washington airfield
– Which airport is named in the quote. Reagan National is not an ordinary alternative to Dulles: a general aviation flight into it needs a TSA security programme, an armed security officer on board and approval flight by flight, so a quote that simply says Washington should be checked for the airfield before anything else;
– Which customs hours apply. Dulles is listed for inspection round the clock, while the smaller Leesburg and Manassas fields work on business hours that are published as 08:00 to 20:00 by the border service, with longer notice in the airport listings, and Frederick and Montgomery County list no customs at all. A weekend arrival at Manassas has to be arranged before 17:00 on the Friday;
– Who is allowed to fly it. The United States treats a charter between two American points as a domestic job. A non-US aircraft may carry passengers between two US points only if they arrived on it from abroad or are leaving on it for abroad, so the jet that brought you from London can take you on to New York, while a hop for another party is normally flown by a US-registered aircraft. Each US leg flown by a foreign aircraft also needs its own permit to proceed from customs.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for the Washington run:
Super-midsize and large-cabin jets, nonstop
The cheapest way across without a stop. Both types have the published range for the crossing, and the prices above are built on them.
Long-range jets, for big parties
The aircraft for ten or more passengers, for long luggage lists and for trips that carry on beyond Washington to the west coast or the Gulf.
Midsize jets, with a stop at Gander
A smaller cabin for four to eight people who accept an hour on the ground in Newfoundland. A Challenger 350 has too little range for the crossing from most British fields, and we confirm with the operator which stop suits your date.
Light jets and turboprops, for the East Coast
Not for the Atlantic, but the right aircraft once you are there: New York, Boston and Florida are each a short flight from the capital.
Helicopters
For the last stretch and not for the crossing, and never for the middle of the city: the airspace over central Washington is closed to such flights without a waiver. A landing site is agreed before the quote, so the request goes in early.

This is a small part of what is available. Aircraft that can cross the Atlantic are fewer than the ones that serve Europe, and their positions change daily, so a super-midsize already waiting in London is often cheaper than one that must first be brought over from North America. Washington works the other way round after a big event, when the aircraft that brought delegations and guests are heading home, and a jet that is going back across the ocean anyway can sometimes be had on better terms for the eastbound leg.

Business aviation airports in Washington
Seven airfields can take a business jet around the capital, and two more places appear on the map for reasons that do not help a charter client. They are not interchangeable. The airport that matches the postcode is often one that private flights cannot use, so it pays to know the rules before a quote arrives with the wrong field in it.
| Airport | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Washington Dulles International IAD / KIAD |
The default for a private jet from Britain and the airport the prices on this page are built on. It lies about 39 km west of the centre of Washington, with two runways of 11,500 ft (3,505 m), a third of 10,501 ft (3,201 m) and a fourth of 9,400 ft (2,865 m), all with instrument approaches. Signature and Atlantic Aviation are the handlers in the airport listing we use, the border service's sheet adds Jet Aviation and Dulles Jet Center, and the line-up changes, so we confirm which door is yours before we quote. The airport is listed with customs landing rights and arrival inspections are published as available round the clock, with contact at least two hours before landing. No curfew is published; engine run-ups between 22:00 and 07:00 need the airport's approval, and a landing fee applies |
| Ronald Reagan Washington National DCA / KDCA |
The city airport, only 6 km from the centre, with a main runway of 7,169 ft (2,185 m) and Signature as the private handler. It is also the airport a private charter normally cannot use. General aviation flights into it are allowed only for operators under the TSA's DCA Access Standard Security Program: a designated security coordinator, fingerprint checks for the crew, a slot reservation from the FAA and a TSA authorisation for each flight at least 24 hours ahead, a departure from a designated gateway airport with no intermediate stops, screening, an armed security officer on board and an instrument flight plan. Dulles itself has served as one of those gateways, so an operator that holds the programme can in principle clear customs there and fly the short hop on to Reagan. Whether a particular foreign-registered aircraft can obtain the approval is for the TSA to decide, so we treat Reagan as an exception to confirm in writing and plan on Dulles |
| Baltimore/Washington International BWI / KBWI |
The Maryland alternative, about 43 km north-east of the centre of Washington and a short drive from Baltimore, with a main runway of 10,503 ft (3,201 m) and Signature as the private handler. Listed with customs landing rights. General aviation pilots are asked to call on 129.0 before arriving at the GA ramp for security reasons, and construction on the field changes taxi routes at short notice. Choose it for Baltimore, Annapolis and the Maryland side of the capital region, and not for the centre of Washington |
| Leesburg Executive JYO / KJYO |
A Loudoun County field about 51 km west-north-west of the centre and 17 km from Dulles, with a runway of 5,500 ft (1,676 m) and an ILS to runway 17. Kuhn Jet Center is the handler listed. Customs is available by appointment: the border service sheet gives 08:00 to 20:00 with at least two hours' notice, the airport listing gives 06:00 to 21:00 with 24 hours' notice, so we plan on the longer notice. A good choice for Loudoun County and the Virginia hunt country when the party does not need Dulles |
| Manassas Regional HEF / KHEF |
About 48 km south-west of the centre, with a 6,200 ft (1,890 m) runway and an ILS to runway 16L. APP Jet Center, open round the clock, and Chantilly Jet Center are the handlers. The tower runs 06:30 to 22:30 and no curfew is published. Customs landing rights are available with 24 hours' notice in the airport listing, while the border service sheet gives 08:00 to 20:00 with at least two hours' notice, so we plan on the longer notice; a weekend arrival has to be arranged before 17:00 on the preceding Friday. A sensible fallback to the south-west of the capital |
| Frederick Municipal FDK / KFDK |
A Maryland field about 65 km north-west of the centre, with a 5,819 ft (1,774 m) runway and an ILS to runway 23. Signature is the handler listed, and the tower and the handler keep 07:00 to 21:00. No customs is listed, so an international arrival clears at Dulles or another landing rights airport first. It lies about 37 nautical miles from Washington, outside the 30-nautical-mile ring around the Reagan beacon that defines the special airspace rules. For Frederick, Gettysburg and the western Maryland hills |
| Montgomery County Airpark GAI / KGAI |
At Gaithersburg, about 32 km north-north-west of the centre, with a single runway of 4,202 ft (1,281 m), no ILS and no control tower. DC Metro Aviation Services is the handler, and its hours change with the season. Jets are asked not to take off from runway 32 between 23:00 and 07:00, and no customs is listed. A field for turboprops and small jets, and not for a transatlantic cabin |
| College Park, Potomac Airfield and Hyde Field CGS, VKX, W32 |
The three small Maryland fields inside the flight restricted zone around Washington, often called the Maryland Three. Pilots who use them need a TSA security assessment, fingerprints and an approved list of aircraft, and every flight needs an air traffic clearance with a discrete transponder code. They exist for light aircraft, and a charter from Britain has no business there |
| Joint Base Andrews ADW / KADW |
The military field south-east of the city. Published remarks restrict it to official business, state that no general aviation aircraft are accepted and ask transient aircraft for permission at least 48 hours ahead. It is not an option for a charter, and we mention it only because it sometimes appears in a client's first request |
Four details decide most Washington arrivals:
Choose the handler
Dulles has more than one handler on the field, Reagan, Baltimore and Frederick have one, and the lists differ between sources. Signature, Atlantic Aviation, Jet Aviation and Dulles Jet Center are the names that come up at Dulles. They differ in lounge, fees and car access, so we put your preference, or the operator's, in writing and name the handler on the transfer order too.
Hours, slots and airspace
Dulles publishes no curfew, and Manassas and Frederick close their towers at night. The larger point is the airspace: Dulles lies about 21 nautical miles from Reagan, inside the 30-nautical-mile Special Flight Rules Area around the city, and the zone at its heart is closed to ordinary flying unless a waiver is granted. An arriving jet flies on an instrument flight plan with a discrete transponder code, which is routine, and temporary flight restrictions can appear at short notice around events in the capital.
Border and passport
British citizens travel on an ESTA and a valid passport, and the crew and passenger details are filed with the US border service before departure from Britain. Officers clear the party at the handler, and we and the handler arrange it beforehand. Details are in the border section below.
Car and late nights
A car from the terminal is the normal plan, and we book it with the handler so the driver is waiting at the right door. Dulles is 39 km from the centre as the crow flies and the road is longer, so the drive is part of the plan. If the flight lands late, tell us early, because that is when the choice between Dulles and a field with a closing tower matters.

Border, passport and US customs
The United States is not in the Schengen area or any shared travel zone with Britain, and every passenger is inspected by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival. British citizens can enter under the Visa Waiver Programme with an approved ESTA for a stay of up to 90 days for business or tourism, and the passport has to be valid for the length of the stay. An approved ESTA does not decide admission: the officer at the terminal does. It can be refused or may not be enough in some cases, for example after an arrest, even without a conviction, after an earlier overstay, or for business done on behalf of a US company, and anyone in doubt applies for a visa instead, which takes longer. Apply for the ESTA well before the day, through the official site only. On a private aircraft the ESTA normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote.

For the aircraft there is a separate set of steps, and our handler and the operator carry them out. The pilot in command files the passenger and crew manifest through the CBP electronic system, no later than 60 minutes before departure from Britain, and must have the approval from the US authorities before the aircraft leaves. Approval of the manifest is not the same as permission to land: the pilot also secures landing rights from CBP. At Dulles the fact sheet we work from asks the pilot to contact CBP before leaving the foreign airport and at least two hours before the expected arrival, with a tolerance of 30 minutes either way, and an arrival outside that window voids the permission. The aircraft parks on the handler's ramp as the tower directs, and passengers and crew are processed at the CBP office of the handler or wherever the officer designates, after which passengers can leave straight from the handler. Passports, any visas, the pilot's licence and medical certificate, the aircraft registration and the user fee decal are shown. We confirm the procedure with the operator for each trip, because the rules change and a booking has to follow the text in force, not a memory of it.
Dulles lists inspection services round the clock. The same sheet places Leesburg and Manassas in the Dulles port, with inspections from 08:00 to 20:00 and requests made in business hours, at least two hours ahead. Frederick and Montgomery County list no customs, and Baltimore/Washington is listed with customs landing rights of its own, and its hours are confirmed separately. We do not assume that an officer is on duty at the hour you land anywhere but Dulles; we ask, and put the answer in the quote.
Coming back into Britain brings its own paperwork. British and Irish citizens need no permission to enter, and most other visitors who need no visa still need a UK electronic travel authorisation. The aircraft is covered by a General Aviation Report, filed with the UK authorities between 48 hours and two hours before departure from Washington. A mistake is expensive: £2,500 for a first landing at an aerodrome that is not a regulated one, and £2,000 for every passenger carried without permission. The operator and the handler file the report, and we check that it has gone in.
The airspace around the capital
Washington is the one American city where the sky is part of the security plan. A jet from Britain meets it on the last hundred miles, and it helps to know what the crew will tell you.
What the rules mean for a charter
– A circle of 30 nautical miles around the Reagan National navigation beacon is the Special Flight Rules Area. Inside it an aircraft needs two-way radio, a transponder with altitude reporting, an active flight plan and a discrete transponder code, and a speed limit of 180 knots applies unless air traffic control authorises otherwise. An arrival on an instrument flight plan meets all of this as a matter of course;
– At the centre is the Flight Restricted Zone, where the FAA tells pilots to treat the airspace as closed. Flights under part 91 and the other general aviation rule parts are prohibited there unless a waiver is granted, which is why no charter helicopter lands in the middle of the city;
– Temporary flight restrictions can appear at any time, and the FAA publishes advisories for the inauguration and for the President's address to Congress. On those days the quoted slot can move, and the pilot checks the notices before departure from Britain.
For a client the practical result is simple. The aircraft lands at Dulles, the party clears customs there and drives into town, and the question of Reagan National is settled before the quote is sent.

Washington spreads over the district, Virginia and Maryland, and the airport you choose decides which side of the Potomac you start on. The figures below are straight-line distances from the middle of the city, which understate the drive but show the order of things.

Flying to Washington with a dog or a cat
The United States asks for little paperwork on the way in and more on the way home. The animal normally travels with you in the cabin, and the crossing is long enough that most dogs sleep through it. What matters is the timing of three documents: the CDC import receipt for a dog, the state paperwork for the place where you land, and the certificate for the return to Britain, which has a short life.

What the two countries ask for:
- For a dog, a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, which is free and covers one dog. The United Kingdom is not on the CDC list of countries at high risk for dog rabies, so the lighter rules apply: the dog must look healthy on arrival, be at least six months old and carry a microchip that a universal scanner can read. A dog from such a country may enter through any port of entry, so Dulles and Baltimore both work;
- Virginia, where Dulles and Reagan National stand, says that it has no entry requirements for personal pet dogs and cats, but that a dog or cat over four months old should be up to date on its rabies vaccination. Maryland, the state of Baltimore/Washington and Frederick, publishes a rule that a dog or cat entering the state should carry a certificate of veterinary inspection with a rabies statement, valid for 30 days, and we check whether it applies to a pet travelling with its owner. We also check the rules of the District itself for your dates;
- For the return to Britain, the United States is a "part 2" listed country: a Great Britain pet health certificate completed by an official vet and dated in the ten days before arrival, with a pet passport or animal health certificate not accepted. The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old, and the microchip must have been fitted before or at the same time as the vaccine. The official text lists no blood test for these countries;
- For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Britain. Cats are exempt. No more than five animals per traveller.
What catches owners out on the Washington run
– The certificate for the way home has to be dated inside ten days of arrival, so a two-week stay means a vet appointment in the capital region, and the tapeworm treatment has its own window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. Book both before you leave Britain;
– A dog under six months old cannot enter under the CDC rule, so a puppy is a reason to move the trip and not the paperwork;
– A hotel in Georgetown or on Capitol Hill, a hired car and any helicopter each decide separately whether they accept the animal, so ask each of them before the flight and not at the door.
Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. We also confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal on the way back into Britain.
The Washington calendar: blossom, a gala and a swearing-in
Washington runs on a calendar that is set by politics, ceremony and the seasons. Spring brings the cherry trees, the summer fills the Mall with festivals, and the busiest weeks of all arrive on a schedule that nobody in the charter business controls. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.
Why an event week costs more
The flight itself costs what it always does. The fleet that can cross the Atlantic is much smaller than the Europe-only fleet, and the aircraft that suit Washington are wanted on the same days from New York and Europe. What tightens is parking at Dulles, the better cars, crew duty hours and, for the big ceremonies, the airspace notices that can move a slot. A booking made a fortnight before the inauguration or the cherry blossom peak can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft brought across the ocean empty. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the peaks a crossing can usually be arranged within a few days.
Ways to bring the Washington price down
- Pick the aircraft for the ocean, not for the cabin photographs. A super-midsize flying nonstop costs noticeably less than a long-range jet, and less than a midsize with a stop; for four to eight people it is the fair trade;
- Ask where the aircraft is based. A Praetor or Challenger positioning from London needs less ferrying than one coming from Florida or the west coast, and on a transatlantic sector positioning is a large share of the bill;
- Be flexible by a day or two. A flight that avoids the blossom peak and the weeks around a ceremony is easier to price, and a return that fits an empty leg is cheaper than a fresh charter.
Types of flights
Washington produces its own mix of trips, because it is a seat of government, a diplomatic city and a tourist city at the same time.
- Government and diplomatic travel, from visits to the embassies on Embassy Row, where the city counts 177 foreign embassies, to delegations with a fixed meeting and a firm return;
- Business trips tied to Capitol Hill, the associations and the offices of Northern Virginia, where timing is set by hearings and the officer's hours at the terminal are the main concern;
- Ceremonial weekends, from the blossom festival and the correspondents' dinner to the honours gala and the inauguration, which tie the flight to a date set by the organisers;
- Family and leisure visits to the Smithsonian museums and the monuments on the Mall, often combined with a day in Baltimore or Annapolis;
- Onward journeys to New York, Boston and Florida, using Washington as the port of entry to the United States and a lighter aircraft from there.
One-way or return deserves a second look. Over this distance a return within the week is priced as two separate sectors plus the crew's rest and hotel in Washington, so we quote both versions. For a short stay, keeping the aircraft on the East Coast and flying home on the third day usually beats flying it back empty and fetching it again, while after a week or more two one-way charters are simpler than a jet standing idle.
Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight that nobody is paying for, offered to a passenger at a fraction of the normal price. On the Washington corridor the supply follows the calendar more than the volume of traffic, and it helps to know where it comes from.
Where Washington empty legs come from
– Event weeks. Aircraft arrive full for the blossom peak, the correspondents' dinner or the honours weekend and leave empty a day or two later, so the eastbound and onward sectors appear in the days after;
– Transatlantic positioning. A super-midsize that has taken a party from London to Washington often has to return, and that empty crossing is the one most worth looking for;
– East Coast rotation. Aircraft based in the region move between Washington, New York, Boston and Florida, and the short legs between them can be cheap.
The fleet that can cross is small, so a client who can offer three days stands a much better chance than one who needs a particular evening. The price of the discount is control: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can disappear when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Washington match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter
In Washington a helicopter is a tool for the edge of the region and not for the middle of it. The Flight Restricted Zone closes the airspace over the centre of the city to ordinary flying unless a waiver is granted, so a charter helicopter will not set you down by the Mall, and the useful work starts at an airport outside the zone. From Dulles, Leesburg or Manassas a helicopter reaches the Virginia countryside, the Chesapeake shore and the Maryland towns far faster than the road does.
about 84 km east across the Potomac and the Maryland suburbs, for the Naval Academy, the sailing harbour and the Chesapeakeon request
about 82 km to the east-north-east, a short hop for a dinner or a ball gameon request
about 24 km to the west, the heart of Virginia hunt and wine countryon request
about 109 km to the east, a waterfront town on Maryland's Eastern Shoreon request
Before you plan around a helicopter
– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A hotel roof, a marina or a private lawn needs its landing status and the owner's consent confirmed before the quote, not after, and nothing is planned inside the restricted zone without a waiver;
– Weather sets the schedule. Low cloud and winter fog can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;
– A twin-engine machine is the sensible minimum over open water. For event weeks and the summer weekends, book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is no rotary capacity.
For scenic work the usual choice is the Airbus H125, for villa and marina transfers the roomier H130, and where a twin is wanted the H135 or the Bell 429. We book the helicopter alongside the jet, so that both crews follow one timetable.

Washington charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.
NONSTOP · THE SUPER-MIDSIZE
Six people and one stretch of the Atlantic
Farnborough - Washington Dulles, Embraer Praetor 600, about 8 h 05 min · 6 pax
A delegation leaving mid-morning and landing around midday, with meetings the following morning. The reason for the Praetor was less the seats than the wish to cross without a stop at a price below a long-range jet. They arrived at Dulles, cleared the border at the handler and were in the cars within a short time of the aircraft door opening.
GANDER STOP · THE MIDSIZE ROUTE
Four people, a Latitude and an hour in Newfoundland
London Luton - Washington Dulles, Cessna Citation Latitude, about 8 h 15 min plus a stop · 4 pax
A smaller party that preferred a midsize cabin. The aircraft cannot fly the whole distance, so the quote included a stop at Gander, a turn of about an hour with fuel and a stretch of the legs. A Praetor was cheaper on paper but not available on the dates, and nobody argued about the extra hours.
BLOSSOM WEEKEND · FIXED DATES
A family group for the cherry trees
London Stansted - Washington Dulles, Bombardier Challenger 605, about 8 h 10 min · 8 pax
The dates were set by the trees and not by the client, which meant the booking went in six weeks ahead and the hotel in Georgetown was reserved first. Eight people, formal clothes for a dinner and a request for a quiet arrival. The return was booked at the same time, which kept the aircraft and crew on the ground on the East Coast for the week.
THE CITY AIRPORT · NOT AN OPTION
A client who asked for Reagan by name
Biggin Hill - Washington Dulles, Embraer Praetor 600, about 8 h 10 min · 5 pax
They had seen the airport on the map and asked for it directly, because it is six kilometres from the hotel. A private charter into Reagan needs a TSA security programme and approval flight by flight, so we explained the trade and landed at Dulles with a car at the handler, a longer drive but no approval to wait for. The decision took one call.
A DOG ON BOARD · TWO PIECES OF PAPER
Three adults and a labrador for a ten-day stay
Edinburgh - Washington Dulles, Embraer Praetor 600, about 7 h 40 min · 3 pax + dog
The CDC Dog Import Form receipt was ready before departure, and the Great Britain pet health certificate for the way home had to be dated inside ten days of the return flight. The tapeworm treatment fell between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain. The vet appointments were booked in Virginia before the family flew out, and the dog slept most of the crossing.
EMPTY LEG · THE WAY HOME
A jet already going your way
Washington Dulles - London Stansted, Bombardier Challenger 605 empty leg, about 6 h 50 min · 4 pax
The aircraft had brought a party over for a long weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an eastbound night departure that landed in Britain in time for breakfast.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Washington
1How long is a private jet flight from London to Washington?
About 8 h 05 min nonstop in a Praetor 600 from Farnborough, and a little less from Edinburgh or Glasgow. A Citation Latitude needs a stop at Gander and takes about 8 h 15 min in the air plus an hour on the ground. The routed distance to Dulles is between 3,099 and 3,335 nautical miles depending on the British airfield, and Washington is five hours behind Britain for most of the year.
2How much does a private jet to Washington cost?
From about £52,350 one way for a Praetor 600 from Farnborough, nonstop. A Challenger 605 starts from about £62,950 from Glasgow and £67,450 from Stansted, a Global 6000 from Aberdeen from about £86,900, and a Citation Latitude with a stop at Gander from about £62,500 from Manchester and £64,150 from Luton. Weeks around the blossom peak, the honours weekend and an inauguration cost more, and an empty leg can cost far less. The calculator on this page gives an indicative figure for your dates.
3Which airport should a private jet use for Washington?
Dulles (IAD / KIAD) for most trips. It is about 39 km from the centre, has runways of up to 11,500 ft, published inspections round the clock and no published curfew. Baltimore/Washington (BWI / KBWI) suits Baltimore and Maryland, and Leesburg and Manassas suit Virginia addresses when customs hours allow. Reagan National (DCA / KDCA) is only 6 km from the centre, but private flights can use it only under a TSA security programme, so we choose by your address and by customs hours.
4Can a private jet land at Reagan National Airport?
Only under strict conditions. General aviation flights into Reagan National are allowed to operators under the TSA's DCA Access Standard Security Program, with a slot reservation from the FAA and TSA authorisation for each flight, a departure from a designated gateway airport with no intermediate stops, screening, an armed security officer on board and an instrument flight plan. Dulles has itself been a gateway for the programme, so an operator that holds it can in principle clear customs there and fly the short hop on, but approval for a foreign-registered aircraft is for the TSA to decide and we confirm it in writing. The default is to land at Dulles and drive in.
5Do British passengers need a visa or an ESTA to fly to Washington?
British citizens need no visa for business or tourism for up to 90 days, but they need an approved ESTA and a passport valid for the length of the stay. An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry, and it may not be enough for business done on behalf of a US company or after an arrest or an earlier overstay. The pilot files the passenger manifest before departure and customs clears the party at the handler. Apply for the ESTA through the official site only, and well ahead of the flight. On a private aircraft it normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote.
6Can I take my dog to Washington on a private jet?
Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Going out you need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, and the dog must be at least six months old, healthy and microchipped; Virginia and Maryland each publish their own animal entry rules, and we check which applies to your landing airport. For the return, the United States is a part 2 country: a Great Britain pet health certificate dated in the ten days before arrival, a rabies vaccine at least 21 days old, and for dogs a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork in writing for your dates.
