Private jet charter in Madeira

Three and a half hours from a London airfield puts you over a mountain standing in the Atlantic, and the harder part of the trip is the last five minutes, because Funchal is one of the few airports in Europe where the Portuguese rules set a bar for the commander before the aircraft may land. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around the approval your crew needs, the wind forecast and the length of the stay. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Madeira is a mountain with a coastline, and nearly everything a visitor wants lies within an hour's drive of one runway on the south-east shore. This page tells you who may fly you there, what stops the flight, and what to expect once you are on the ground.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Madeira depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Legacy 600 and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Madeira?

Madeira is about 1,319 to 1,564 nautical miles from the British airfields we use, which puts the island at the top of what a light jet can do in one leg. From the London group it is about 3 h 35 min, about four hours from Scotland, and there is no clock change on arrival, because Madeira sits on the same time as Britain, GMT in winter and BST in summer. The table below uses Funchal as the airport, since it is the only one on the main island.

Door to door, with no clock change

A client who leaves a London office at half past six in the morning and flies from Farnborough or Biggin Hill is on the ground at Funchal about eleven o'clock local time, because the clock does not move. The terminal is roughly 13 km in a straight line from the centre of the city and about 21 km by road, so lunch in the old town is realistic the same day. Add the drive to the British airfield and the quick processing at both ends and the journey comes to a little over five hours, against a full day by scheduled flights with a change.

Light jet or midsize: what decides it for Madeira

– Up to four people, a Phenom 300E on a London departure is the sensible answer at £17,950 from Biggin Hill, and a Citation XLS+ on the same run is priced about £4,300 higher one way. That difference buys the larger cabin and the margin in fuel;

– Past four, with luggage for a fortnight, golf bags or a pushchair, the question stops being the price and becomes the range, because a full cabin shortens what a light jet can fly. We quote a midsize or a super-midsize beside the light jet so that you see both figures;

– Super-midsize and large aircraft are for parties of eight or more, for winter trips when you want the fuel margin the Atlantic asks for, and for itineraries that carry on to the Canaries or the Caribbean.

Can a light jet fly nonstop to Madeira?

This is the question that settles most Madeira quotes, and it is not a formality. From the London airfields the sector runs 1,371 to 1,410 nautical miles by our routing, and from Scotland and the north of England it reaches about 1,564. Manufacturers quote range with four passengers, full fuel and instrument reserves that include a 200 nautical mile alternate, and they leave out the winds, which on the Atlantic are not a footnote. Published figures for the light jets we would put on this run:

Embraer Phenom 300E
four passengers, full fuel, instrument reserves with a 200 nm alternate, no wind
2,010 nm
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2
same basis
1,927 nm
Cessna Citation CJ3+
same basis
1,825 nm
HondaJet Elite II
same basis, short of the London sector
1,358 nm
Cessna Citation M2 Gen2
same basis, short of the sector
1,183 nm

The first three clear the London sector with four people aboard, though with less to spare than the headline figure suggests. The last two do not, whatever the brochure says about their range at a different payload. A full cabin pulls every figure down, so we ask for the passenger and bag count in the first message and check the fuel plan with the operator before a quote goes out. Fuel for the alternate matters on this island more than elsewhere, and a later section explains why.

Prices for the private jet flights to Madeira

Typical trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Funchal. The aircraft is chosen for the length of the sector and the number of seats it will carry in practice, not for prestige. The New Year and the Flower Festival weeks can sit above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

Porto Santo from Funchal: a job for a turboprop

Porto Santo lies 33 nautical miles from Funchal, and a Pilatus PC-12 covers it in about 35 min, so the price of £3,100 one way buys a very short sector. It suits a party that wants a beach weekend on the sister island without losing a day, and a turboprop is the right aircraft for it: a jet is billed at a minimum charge far above the real flying time. You can also fly a London jet direct to Porto Santo, which from Biggin Hill on a Phenom 300E costs about £17,550, only a little less than Funchal.

Before you accept an onward quote from Madeira

– Where the aircraft will wait. Parking at Funchal is constrained and managed through a scheduling procedure, so a quote for a stay of several days should say whether the jet remains on the island or goes to the mainland and returns;

– Which crew is flying. A commander who has not landed at Madeira in the last six months needs simulator or line training to qualify, so an operator with crews who fly to the island regularly is the safer choice than one that has never been;

– Whether it is one booking. London to Funchal, a hop to Porto Santo and home arranged as a single itinerary costs less than three separate quotes, because the aircraft and crew stay with you.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Madeira:

Light jets, for up to four with light luggage

The class that carries most of the cheaper bookings, and the one where the range question is real. It works from the London airfields with four people and modest bags, and the runway at Funchal is no obstacle to any of these aircraft. The approval and the fuel plan are.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for families and a fortnight of luggage

A taller cabin, a bigger hold and more fuel in reserve for the same sector. This is where we put families with golf bags, a pushchair and a dog, and parties flying from Manchester or Leeds.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For eight or more, for Scotland and the north, for winter trips where the extra fuel margin is welcome, and for itineraries that carry on to the Canaries or across the Atlantic rather than turning round.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the short hop to Porto Santo, and for little else on this ground. A turboprop is not the aircraft for the flight from Britain, which would take more than five hours at its speed, and the saving over a jet is only on the island-to-island sectors.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the island: the coast, the north shore at Porto Moniz, and places where the road takes an hour. The landing site is agreed with the operator and the landowner before the quote.

This is a small part of what is available. Madeira sits inside the western European fleet, so outside the festival weeks there is usually a suitable aircraft and crew within a few hours of the island, and around the New Year the same operators may have a jet looking for a way home after a drop-off.

Business aviation airports in Madeira

The archipelago has two airports that take a business jet, and they are not equivalent. One is where you want to be and the other is where the aircraft goes when the wind says otherwise.

Airport What it gives you
Funchal, Cristiano Ronaldo
FNC / LPMA
The only gateway for the main island, built on a coastal plateau with high ground behind it and part of the runway standing on a platform over the sea. Runway 05/23 is published at 2,481 m by 45 m, there is no ILS on 05, and landings are visual, with minimum visibility of 5,000 m on 05 and 7,000 m on 23. The airport lies about 13 km from the centre of Funchal, runs round the clock subject to a night restriction on movements, is slot-coordinated, and handling is compulsory. ExecuJet operates the FBO there, and customs is available at all hours
Porto Santo
PXO / LPPS
The sister island, about 33 nautical miles north-east of Funchal, with a 3,000 m by 45 m runway about 2 km from Porto Santo town. It is the nearest diversion field for Funchal and a destination of its own for a beach stay. Customs is open 07:00 to 23:00, immigration on weekdays 09:00 to 18:00 and otherwise on request, and Groundforce handles from 07:00 to 22:00. Night landings and take-offs are barred by law apart from a few exceptions, and apron space is limited

Four points settle most Madeira arrivals:

Funchal for the island, Porto Santo for the beach

Funchal serves the whole main island, from the south-coast hotels to the north shore, and there is no other airport on it. Porto Santo is a destination of its own, about 33 nautical miles away, and it is also the nearest place to land when Funchal's wind rules close the door.

Hours, slots and the night rule

Funchal is open round the clock for the tower but bars landings and take-offs from midnight to 06:00 local time apart from capped exceptions, and the handler works from 04:30 to 00:30 and at other times on request. Slots and handling are compulsory and apron parking is limited, so we agree the plan with the handler before the quote.

Border and passport

Portugal is in Schengen and Britain is not, so passengers go through border control and customs at the private terminal. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180, the passport must be less than ten years old on arrival and valid for three months after departure, and a photograph and fingerprints may be taken.

Car, hotel and helicopter

Tell us the hotel or the quinta, not just the airport. Madeira has narrow mountain roads and a lot of tunnels, and the difference between a south-coast hotel and a house on the north shore is an hour in the car. We book the driver, the hotel pick-up and any helicopter leg against the aircraft registration.

business aviation

The approach, the wind and who may fly it

Funchal has a reputation, and it is earned. The runway is not short, but the island is a mountain, the wind comes off the Atlantic and wraps around it, and the approach is flown by eye. Runway 05 has no ILS, so the crew circles to land on it, and the Portuguese AIP requires landings to be made in visual conditions, with a minimum visibility of 5,000 m on runway 05 and 7,000 m on 23. Straight-in approaches to runway 23 from the Funchal VOR are not authorised.

What the Portuguese AIP asks of the crew

– The commander should hold at least 200 hours as captain on the type and should have made one landing and one take-off at Madeira in the previous six months, or have equivalent simulator or line training. An experienced captain who has never been to the island is not enough;

– Taking off needs the right turn after departure from runway 05 and the left turn from runway 23,. Backtracking on the runway is prohibited for aircraft above 30 tonnes, a rule that touches only the heaviest large-cabin aircraft;

– RNP approaches need a separate authorisation from the Portuguese civil aviation authority and specific training. We do not assume a crew has it, and we ask the operator in writing.

Wind is what stops flights. The landing limits published for Funchal are expressed as a two-minute mean at the touchdown anemometer, and they are tighter for some directions than for others: an OPSGROUP summary lists, for winds from the north-west to north, a mean of 15 knots with gusts to 25, and a higher allowance for winds from the south. The same summary describes severe low-level turbulence over the threshold of runway 23 in some wind directions, and notes that ATC does not stop an approach itself but reports landings that exceed the limits. Figures like these change, so we check the current ones with the operator. Commanders therefore treat the limits as firm, and a day that looks fine from the terminal can still close the airport.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

Diversions and the fuel plan

Because a go-around or a closure is part of the planning and not an accident, every flight to Funchal carries a plan for where to go next. There are three realistic answers, and they are very different. Porto Santo is 33 nautical miles away and has a 3,000 m runway, but only limited parking and a night restriction, so a jet may be able to land there and little more. Lisbon is 542 nautical miles to the north-east, roughly 1 h 40 min in a light jet, with every service you could want, and it is the usual mainland alternate. The Canaries, with Tenerife South at 291 nautical miles, are a further option when the mainland is out of reach.

What this means for your booking

– The aircraft carries fuel for the alternate, and the alternate is chosen with the weather. The farther the alternate, the more fuel is carried and the shorter the range left for the payload, which is why a light jet on this sector may need to take fewer passengers or bags than the seat count suggests;

– A diversion is a flight like any other. If the aircraft lands at Lisbon or Porto Santo with you aboard, you can wait on the ground and continue when the wind drops, or stop there, and the extra time and fees are real costs. Ask what the quote says about a diversion before you accept it;

– Winter is when this tends to happen most. Operators' briefings put the higher diversion risk between November and March, and a trip that depends on a given day should have a day in hand. In summer the odds are better, but the wind is a local feature, not a season, and none of this is a guarantee.

Border, customs and the way home

Because Britain sits outside Schengen, a flight from London into Madeira is an arrival from a third country. Passengers see the border police as well as customs, both arranged by the handler, so nobody queues with scheduled passengers. Funchal is listed as an airport of entry, customs is available at any hour, and the operator files the Portuguese customs declarations before arrival, a task the FBO can take on for you. A first-time visitor may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints. For the return, the General Aviation Report must reach the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure, and visitors who need no visa but are not British or Irish citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK.

From the apron to the hotel

Funchal airport is on the east side of the island, and the hotels sit along the south coast, up in the hills or on the far side of the mountains. Road times, not the distance on the map, decide where you can stay. The island's main roads are fast expressways with a good many tunnels, so times are short but not always predictable in July and August.

Flying to Madeira with a dog or a cat

The flight takes three and a half to four hours, which is a long sector for an animal, but on a private jet the dog is in the cabin with you, on your terms, without a hold or a kennel queue. What requires attention is the paperwork, and the certificate has a ten-day life from the day it is issued. Island trips tend to be long ones, which makes the way home the part to plan.

private flight with animals

What Portugal and the EU ask for:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or on the same day, never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued no more than ten days before the animal enters the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at the first point of entry into the EU, which the handler coordinates at the terminal;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Madeira run

– The tapeworm treatment is for the way home, not the way out, so it is a vet appointment you make on the island, a day or two before departure. A fortnight leaves room for it and a long weekend barely does, so ask your hotel in Funchal for a vet before you leave;

– A GB pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU. The certificate has to be a fresh one for each trip, and the rabies vaccination must not lapse while the animal is away;

– Hotels and quintas differ in whether they take animals. Tell us about the dog in the first message so that the car, the hotel and any helicopter transfer accept it before the quote, and back in Britain we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Madeira calendar: a season of festivals and winds

The dates that matter in Madeira are the festivals and the New Year, more than a summer peak. Which week you choose affects the apron space and the hotel rate more than the choice of aircraft.

1 December to early January
The Christmas lighting of the Funchal amphitheatre and the exhibits downtown run from the first of December into the new year. Expect these to be among the tightest weeks for aircraft, hotels and cars, with apron parking the first thing likely to run short
31 December
The New Year's Eve fireworks over Funchal bay. This is the date that defines the island's winter business, and the one where parking at Funchal is most likely to run short, so book the aircraft, the slot and the hotel as a single decision
Early January
The Chants of Epiphany in the Municipal Gardens on 5 January close the festive season, and the winter wind is the main risk to the schedule
February
Carnival, with about two weeks of events in downtown Funchal, a good reason for a winter break
Late April to late May
The Flower Festival, with about a month of downtown entertainment. A good time to visit and likely to be busy for hotels and for private flights, especially over the long weekends
June
The Atlantic Festival, with about a month of events in Funchal
July
The Madeira Gastronomic Festival. Midday traffic around Funchal in July and August can add five to ten minutes to the airport transfer
Late August to mid-September
The Wine Festival, with European Folklore Week at the end of August and the Columbus Festival on Porto Santo in September
Early October
The Madeira Nature Festival, a quieter point in the calendar
November to March
The period when operators' briefings put the higher risk of diversions, so leave a margin in the diary

Why the New Year costs more

Not the distance. London to Funchal is the same sector in December as in May. What changes is that the aircraft and crews able to reach the island tend to want the same days, the apron at Funchal is constrained and managed by a scheduling procedure, and a jet that drops its passengers on the 29th may have to leave and come back on the 2nd. A booking made a fortnight before the fireworks can still be done, but it pays more and may mean a drop-and-go plan. Made two months earlier it is simpler and cheaper.

Ways to bring the Madeira price down

  • Move off the New Year and the Flower Festival long weekends where you can. The shoulder weeks cost less in aircraft, slots and hotels alike;
  • Match the jet to the payload honestly. A Phenom 300E for four with bags is the cheapest nonstop answer, and a midsize costs more but gives back payload and fuel margin;
  • Ask where the approved crew is based. An aircraft already in Portugal or Spain needs less positioning than one from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful share of the bill;
  • Agree the plan for the stay. A jet that goes to the mainland and returns for you can cost less than one that waits on a constrained apron, and the quote should say which you are paying for.

Types of flights

Madeira produces a different mix from the Mediterranean islands, because the journey is long and the airport sets conditions for the crew.

  • Winter and New Year trips by families and friends, usually a week or two, with a hotel in Funchal and a view of the fireworks as the fixed point;
  • Spring garden and festival weekends, centred on the Flower Festival and on the quintas that open their gardens;
  • Walking and golf holidays, with the levadas and the clifftop courses as the programme, and a stay on the north or west coast;
  • Transatlantic positioning, with Madeira as a fuel or technical stop between Britain and the Canaries or the Caribbean;
  • Short stays on Porto Santo for the beach, arranged as a hop from Funchal or direct.

A day trip deserves a closer look, if only because it is not practical. A same-day return from London would mean about seven hours in the air, and the aircraft and crew wait for you, paid for. A weekend is the shortest sensible stay, and in the festival weeks we quote it both ways because the parking question changes the answer.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Madeira routes they follow the festival weeks and the changeover days, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Madeira empty legs come from

– The New Year change-over. Aircraft bring one party in before the fireworks and take another home, and the sector that finds no passenger on the day is the one that is offered;

– Repositioning around the apron limit. With parking at Funchal constrained, jets that have dropped passengers may go to the mainland or the Canaries and return later, and those legs are released at short notice;

– Festival and golf weekends. Aircraft come in for the Flower Festival or a group trip and go back empty to their bases, and the departures that follow are the ones most often offered.

Because the Madeira corridor is long and thin, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Madeira match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

On Madeira a helicopter is a way to cross a mountain. The island has few flat places and a road that goes through a great many tunnels, and the north shore and the west are where rotary flight changes the day. The listing for Porto Moniz in aviation databases shows a helipad there, and other landing sites depend on the landowner and the operator.

Funchal airport to Calheta
against about 50 minutes by road along the VR1
by agreement
Funchal airport to Porto Moniz
against about 1 hour 5 minutes by road, to a helipad on the north-west coast
on request
Funchal to a hotel or a quinta
many properties are on slopes, and landing is possible only with the landowner and the operator agreeing the site
site approval first
Funchal to Porto Santo
a sea crossing, sensible only with a twin-engine machine
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. Landings outside an aerodrome need the landowner's consent and the operator's confirmation of the site, so a garden or a hotel pad has its status checked before we quote, not after;

– Wind sets the schedule here too. The same mountain winds that affect the airport affect low-level flying, so a transfer should have a road alternative in the same day;

– Twin-engine machines are the sensible choice over water, and at the New Year rotary capacity is the first thing to run out. Book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is none.

The machines for this ground are the Airbus H125 for short coastal work, the wider H130 for villa transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Madeira charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

NEW YEAR · THE APRON DECIDED

Eight friends for the fireworks

London Luton - Funchal, Challenger 350, about 3 h 40 min · 8 pax

They wanted to arrive on the 30th and leave on the 2nd. Parking was the problem, so the jet dropped the party and went to the mainland, returning for the flight home. The quote showed both legs from the start, and the hotel and the car were held for the same dates.

THE CREW QUESTION

Four adults and a first visit to the island

Biggin Hill - Funchal, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 35 min · 4 pax

The operator first proposed a commander with no landings at Madeira. Under the AIP that needs simulator or line training, so we asked for another crew rather than accept the risk. The aircraft was the same, the departure was on time, and nobody on the passenger list noticed.

FLOWER FESTIVAL · A LONG WEEKEND

Six people and the gardens

Southampton - Funchal, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 35 min · 6 pax

A midsize jet because the party came with luggage for a week, and a Thursday departure to be sure of the Friday morning slot. The car met them at the terminal, and the return on Monday was booked at the same time, as a single itinerary.

WINTER · THE LISBON PLAN

A family of five in January

Birmingham - Funchal, Citation Latitude, about 3 h 40 min · 5 pax

A front was forecast on the day, so the fuel plan carried Lisbon as the alternate and the passengers were told what a diversion would cost before they left. The wind held, they landed on the first approach, and the plan was never used. It was written into the quote because it could have been.

GOLF AND THE SISTER ISLAND

Four friends and a hop to Porto Santo

Manchester - Funchal, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 50 min · 4 pax

A week on the main island with a short turboprop leg to Porto Santo at the end, for a beach weekend. The two aircraft were booked together, so the handler at each end worked from one timetable and the bags did not change hands more than once.

A DOG ON BOARD

Two adults and a labrador for a fortnight

Edinburgh - Funchal, Challenger 350, about 4 h · 2 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet in Funchal had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the hotel accepted the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Madeira

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Madeira?

About 3 h 35 min to 3 h 40 min nonstop from Biggin Hill, London City, Farnborough or Luton to Funchal in a Phenom 300E, over roughly 1,371 to 1,410 nautical miles. From Manchester or Leeds allow close to four hours in a Citation XLS+, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around four hours in a Challenger 350. Madeira keeps the same time as Britain, GMT in winter and BST in summer, so there is no clock change to absorb on landing.

2How much does a private jet to Madeira cost?

From about £17,050 one way from Cardiff and £17,950 from Biggin Hill on a Phenom 300E, up to four passengers. A Citation XLS+ from Manchester runs about £23,000, and from Scotland a Challenger 350 costs £30,250 to £30,600. The long sector means the flight itself is the larger part of the bill, so the aircraft class moves the price more than anything else.

3Can a light jet fly nonstop from the UK to Madeira?

Some can, and many cannot. A Phenom 300E is quoted at 2,010 nautical miles, a Citation CJ4 Gen2 at 1,927 and a CJ3+ at 1,825 with four passengers, which leaves a margin on a sector of 1,371 to 1,410 nautical miles from London. A Citation M2 Gen2 at 1,183 and a HondaJet Elite II at 1,358 fall short of the distance or leave no margin. With a full cabin and winds aloft the margin shrinks, so we check payload and fuel for your date before quoting.

4Why does Funchal restrict which crews can land?

Funchal needs a visual approach in good visibility, there is no ILS on runway 05, and the Portuguese AIP asks the commander to hold at least 200 hours as captain on the type and to have landed and taken off at Madeira in the last six months, or to have equivalent simulator or line training. The wind limits are also strict. We tell you at the quote stage whether the crew we propose meets this, and we change the crew rather than the airport.

5What happens if the wind closes Funchal?

The aircraft holds, tries again, or diverts. Porto Santo is about 33 nautical miles away but has limited parking and a night restriction, and Lisbon is about 542 nautical miles away, roughly 1 h 40 min in a light jet. We plan the fuel and the alternate with the operator before departure and tell you what the diversion would cost, because a diversion with passengers aboard is paid for like any other flight.

6Can I take my dog to Madeira on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Portugal follows the EU rules: a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older with 21 days elapsed, and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of entry. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
