Private jet charter in Lille

The train from St Pancras takes about an hour and twenty minutes, so a private jet to Lille only earns its fee when the trip is bigger than the city: a party of five with luggage, a start in Scotland or the West Country, or a programme that carries on to Ypres, Arras or the Opal Coast. Private Jets UK builds the charter around that programme. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Lille Lesquin has a 2,825 m runway with a Category III approach, a general aviation handling service that wants 48 hours' notice, and a customs and border post that works until late in the evening. The real choices are between Lesquin, Le Touquet and Brussels, the day of the week, and whether the date falls on the first weekend of September, when the whole city turns into a market.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Lille depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Lille?

40 minutes from Biggin Hill in a light jet, 1 hour 20 minutes from Edinburgh, and an hour on the clock to add on arrival, because France keeps Central European time. At 129 to 434 nautical miles from the British fields we use, Lille is one of the shortest sectors we sell to France, and a light-jet job from almost the whole of England and Wales. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the train that is always there

Leave Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Lesquin at about twenty to nine local time. The airport lies 7 km south-south-east of the city, and the airport puts the centre at about fifteen minutes by car. Eurostar runs from St Pancras to Lille Europe in about an hour and twenty minutes and asks you to be at the station thirty minutes before departure, so for one or two people travelling between the two city centres the train is hard to beat, and we say so. The jet wins when the party is five or six with bags, when the day starts at Manchester, Bristol or Glasgow and not at St Pancras, and when Lille is the first stop of three: Lesquin to the Ypres memorials, to Arras or to the coast is a car waiting at the aircraft door, not a transfer between stations.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people with ordinary bags, take a light jet. Forty minutes in a CJ3+ is no hardship, and what you save against a midsize cabin pays for the cars and the hotel;

– Five to eight people, or a party with cases for a trade fair, we quote a midsize cabin alongside so that you see both figures. On a sector this short the cabin costs less to upgrade than most people expect;

– A large jet is rarely needed for the distance, but Lesquin takes one without trouble: the main runway is 2,825 m, the landing distance on runway 26 is still 2,545 m, and the Category III approach copes with the fog the north of France produces in winter. The two things to settle early are the stand, because the AIP bars some stands at night and limits some taxiways by wingspan, and the turnaround areas at the runway ends, which suit aircraft with a wheelbase of up to 25.6 m.

Short sectors carry a minimum charge, which is why Biggin Hill, London City, Farnborough, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter all price at the same figure on the light jet. It is a real feature of how a one-way charter is built, because the aircraft has to return to its base, and it means that on this route you should choose the departure field for convenience and not for the mileage.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jet flights from Lille

Lille is a good starting point for the Alps, the Riviera and the Balearics, and a poor one for anything the train does better. Paris is an hour away by TGV and Brussels about thirty-five minutes, so a jet to either is a statement and not a saving. Typical one-way prices:

Onward from Lille: when the aircraft wins and when the car does

Brussels is only 59 nautical miles away on the chart and about 110 km by road, so nobody charters a jet for it: you drive, or you take the train in about thirty-five minutes. The onward flights worth paying for are the ones with a poor road. Le Touquet is 58 nautical miles west, about 35 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12 against roughly two hours by road, and Paris Le Bourget, at 103, about 35 minutes in a Phenom. Geneva, at 298 nautical miles, is where a Lille party meets the Alps in about an hour. Inside Schengen the first landing carries the formalities and the hops after it are free of passport control. One legal point deserves a warning: a British-registered aircraft cannot simply carry passengers between two French airports, so a French domestic hop such as Le Touquet or Le Bourget is arranged with an EU operator or approved case by case, and we choose the operator accordingly.

Before you accept a northern France onward quote

– Who flies the leg. A flight between Britain and France is the ordinary case for a British operator, while a French domestic leg can need an EU operator or prior approval from the French authorities, and that is checked before the quote is written, not after it;

– Whether the legs are one booking. Lille to Le Touquet to Paris over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of returning to base between stops.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Lille:

Light jets, the usual choice for four or five people

At forty minutes in the air this is the natural class for a small party with ordinary luggage. Nothing here lacks the range, and the saving over a bigger cabin is better spent on the cars, the hotel and a table in an estaminet.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for a larger party or a day with equipment

A trade-fair stand, camera cases, golf bags for the Opal Coast or a party of seven going on to Ypres and Arras: the hold fills faster than the seats, and a midsize cabin keeps everyone and everything in one aircraft.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a delegation, a group travelling as one party, or a trip that carries on from Lille to Geneva or the south. The 2,825 m runway takes all of these; the thing to settle early is the stand and the taxiway limits in the AIP.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops inside the region: Le Touquet is under forty minutes in the air, and the saving over a jet on that distance is large.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: the Opal Coast, a battlefield circuit around Ypres and Arras, or a transfer to a hotel outside the centre. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. A quote for Lille may name Paris, Brussels or one of the London fields as the positioning point for the aircraft, depending on where a suitable jet is free on your dates. That is normal for a regional airport, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in Lille

Four airfields come up in a conversation about Lille. One of them is the answer for nearly every trip, and one is a grass strip that we mention because it is on the map. Opening hours below are converted to local time: the French AIP prints UTC, shifted by an hour for the summer schedule, so the local clock time is the printed figure plus one hour all year.

Airport What it gives you
Lille Lesquin
LIL / LFQQ
The answer for nearly every trip, 7 km south-south-east of the city. The main runway 08/26 is 2,825 m by 45 m, with a Category III ILS on runway 26, a second runway 01/19 of 1,580 m by 30 m that only aircraft able to turn on a 30 m width may use, and rescue and fire cover of category 7. The aerodrome is open round the clock. Customs and immigration are listed from 06:00 to 23:00 local, general aviation handling from 07:00 to 21:00 local with 48 hours' prior permission, and Jet A1 from 06:00 to 22:00 local, with fuel outside those hours on request and at extra cost. Handling is compulsory on aprons B, C and D. Choose it for any programme in Lille, Roubaix, Tourcoing or Flanders and for any cabin size
Le Touquet-Paris-Plage Elizabeth II
LTQ / LFAT
The resort airfield on the Opal Coast, 2.9 km east-south-east of the town and about 150 km from Lille. The runway 13/31 is 1,850 by 40 m, with an ILS on runway 13 and fire cover of category 5. Customs and police are listed from 09:00 to 19:00 local, the control tower works through the day with a break at midday and the field is not open at night, with extensions only for commercial and medical flights on 24 hours' notice. Jet A1 is sold from 09:00 to 19:00 local and there is hangar space for visiting aircraft. Choose it when the programme is on the coast and not in the city
Brussels Airport
BRU / EBBR
The big-airport alternative, about 110 km from Lille and well over an hour by road. It has three runways of 3,638, 3,211 and 2,987 m, customs and immigration round the clock, and compulsory general aviation handling. The airport is fully slot-coordinated, and slot requests for business flights go through the handling agent, not directly to the coordinator. Choose it for a large or long-range aircraft that wants the Belgian side of the metropolitan area, for Ghent or Bruges, or for a party that would rather start from the capital. For Lille itself it is a long drive when Lesquin is 15 minutes from the centre
Lille-Marcq-en-Barœul
LFQO
A recreational airfield with grass runways 6 km north-north-east of the city, in the communes of Marcq-en-Barœul and Bondues. It is not a business jet field, and we know of no customs service there, so a flight arriving from Britain is planned into Lesquin. It matters to a client only if a driver reads the name off a map

Four things to settle before a Lille landing:

The handler and the apron

Handling is compulsory on aprons B, C and D, and the general aviation service of Aéroport de Lille SAS runs it, with a hostess who meets crew and passengers, flight plan filing, weather packages, catering, taxis and hotels. Two general aviation aprons offer 9 and 6 stands. Hangar space for visitors depends on availability. Passenger and freight handling is a separate service provided by Aviapartner, and the de-icing that Aviapartner provides is on apron B only.

Hours, fuel and fire cover

Everything French here is converted to local time. General aviation handling is 07:00 to 21:00, 48 hours' notice, with reception outside those hours on prior request. Jet A1 is 06:00 to 22:00, and Aviapartner handles de-icing between 05:00 and 22:00. Fire cover is category 7 round the clock from April to October, and from November to March it falls to category 5 between 23:00 and 06:00 local. The AIP shows no slot coordination for Lille, and the airport describes itself as open at any time because of the Category III approach.

Border and passport

France is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border at Lesquin. The AIP lists customs and immigration from 06:00 to 23:00 local, with an on-request note that we settle with the handler for the date. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU border system, which is free but can add time.

Noise and night

A ministerial order limits the use of the auxiliary power unit at Lesquin, with fines for a breach, so the crew will run the aircraft on ground power where the stand has it. Visual approaches are not permitted at night or at weekends, which makes no difference to a jet flying the ILS. Some stands are not used between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise, and we ask for the stand on the day.

Border, passport and the customs booking

The first landing in the Schengen area is where the formalities happen. At Lesquin the office is a proper customs and border post and not an afterthought, with hours that run to eleven at night local time, but the general aviation service that meets the aircraft keeps shorter hours, from seven in the morning to nine in the evening, and asks for 48 hours of notice. The mismatch is where bookings go wrong: an evening arrival after nine is possible on request, though it is a conversation with the handler and not a formality. We send the passenger details with the handler's booking and keep the customs request in the same thread. A Monday morning arrival is the easiest, and a Friday night before a long weekend is the one to avoid. At Le Touquet the customs and police desk works from nine in the morning to seven in the evening local time and wants the aircraft registration, the captain's name and the passport numbers of every passenger in the request, so the list has to be final earlier than people expect. For the return, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure.

From the apron to Lille and Flanders

Lille is a Flemish city that happens to be in France: for a long time it belonged to the Spanish Netherlands, and the brick and stone of the old town show it. The city has about 240,000 residents and the metropolitan area about 1.5 million, and it sits on the crossing of the high-speed lines to Paris, Brussels and London. The centre is compact and walkable, and nearly everything a visitor wants is close to the Grand Place, officially the Place du Général-de-Gaulle, where a column topped by the Goddess commemorates the city's resistance to a siege in the late eighteenth century.

The Vieille Bourse, built in the middle of the seventeenth century while Lille was under Spanish rule, is the building to see first. Twenty-four identical houses in the Flemish Renaissance manner stand around an inner courtyard, and the courtyard is still used by booksellers, florists and chess players. The Palais des Beaux-Arts, a short walk away, holds Van Dyck, Rubens, Delacroix, Goya, Rodin, Claudel and Carpeaux, forty drawings by Raphael, and a collection of relief models of about fifteen fortified towns of Flanders, made for the fortress map of the Vauban period. Allow two hours, and more if the party likes painting.

The newer Lille is Euralille. Rem Koolhaas and his office were commissioned in the late 1980s to plan a business district around the new stations, and the first phase opened in the middle of the 1990s: the Lille Europe station by Jean-Marie Duthilleul, two office towers above it, and the Triangle des Gares shopping centre by Jean Nouvel. Lille Flandres, the older station, stands beside it. The Eurostar leaves from Lille Europe, and the TGV takes about an hour to Paris and about thirty-five minutes to Brussels. For a client with a meeting in Euralille, the useful fact is that the district stands beside the stations in the middle of the city, so the drive from Lesquin ends at the door.

Food is part of the case for coming. The local table is Flemish: carbonnade, beef stewed in dark beer with mustard and gingerbread; the welsh, a plate of bread, beer and cheddar baked with ham; potjevleesch, a cold terrine of white meats in jelly; and the tarte au maroilles, built on the strong washed-rind cheese of the region. The estaminet, a wood-beamed pub that serves these dishes at long tables, is the right place to eat them. Mussels and chips go with the Braderie and with most of the year. On the sweet side, Maison Meert, at 27 rue Esquermoise, a confectioner's shop since the eighteenth century, is known for a hand-made waffle filled with Madagascar vanilla, and the shop has a gilded ceiling. The drink is beer, from a white beer to the Trois Monts of the French Flemish country, and jenever, the juniper spirit, after the meal.

Roubaix and Tourcoing: the textile towns next door

The two towns that fill the north-east of the metropolitan area are worth a half day, and they are not the postcard Lille. Roubaix made its fortune from textiles, and the collection of La Piscine began in the nineteenth century with fabric samples from its factories. The museum sits in an Art Deco swimming pool, designed by the Lille architect Albert Baert and built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, which was closed as a pool in the 1980s and reopened as a museum of art and industry. Textiles, fashion, ceramics and fine arts are shown around the old basin. Roubaix is also the finish of one of the most famous one-day bicycle races in the world, which ends on the concrete track of the town's velodrome.

Tourcoing lies right next to Roubaix, on the Belgian border, and forms a conurbation with the Belgian towns of Mouscron, Kortrijk and Tournai. The big neo-Gothic church of Saint-Christophe has an 80 m tower with more than 80 bells, and a botanical garden and an arboretum give the town a quiet corner. Both towns have direct trains to Lille and are a short drive from the city centre, so they combine easily with a lunch in Lille.

Ypres and the Flanders Fields

Ypres is across the border in Belgium, about 40 km and forty minutes from Lille. The whole country around it was fought over in the First World War, and for many British families the reason to come is a name on a memorial. The Menin Gate in Ypres carries the names of about 54,000 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Salient and have no known grave. Every evening at eight, buglers from the Last Post Association stop the traffic under the arch and sound the Last Post, a ceremony that has been held since the late 1920s with a pause only for the German occupation. It is brief and quiet. Tyne Cot Cemetery and the ground at Hill 60 lie close to the town.

A visit of this kind is easy to plan badly. The cemeteries are spread over farmland and reached by small roads, and a guide who knows the Salient saves hours. We arrange the car and, if the family wishes, a licensed guide, and we time the arrival so that the party can be at the Menin Gate before eight. A jet to Lille and a driver waiting at the aircraft door turns a long day by train and taxi into an unhurried one, with the flight home timed after the ceremony and agreed with the handler in advance, because its usual hours end at nine.

Arras, Lens and the Louvre-Lens

Arras, about 52 km from Lille, belongs to the same day trip. Its Grand Place and the Place des Héros, rebuilt in brick after the First World War, are surrounded by about 155 townhouses in the Flemish Baroque style, and the belfry of the town hall, 75 m high, is part of the UNESCO listing of the belfries of Belgium and France. Beneath the town are the boves, a network of medieval tunnels that tunnellers of the British Empire, among them New Zealanders, extended before the First World War battle there, and the Carrière Wellington museum shows part of it. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial stands on Hill 145, about 11 km north of the town. Arras holds a large Christmas market in the winter, the Main Square Festival in early July and a ten-day film festival in November.

On the way, Lens has the Louvre-Lens, a branch of the Paris museum opened in December on a former mining site. The building is by the Japanese architects SANAA, and its centrepiece is the Galerie du Temps, a hall of about 3,000 square metres in which about 200 works from the Louvre are arranged in time order from about 3,500 BC to the middle of the nineteenth century. It is a good stop for a party that wants one serious museum and does not want a day in Paris.

Le Touquet, the Opal Coast and the Pas-de-Calais beaches

The Opal Coast runs for about 120 km from the Belgian border to Picardy, and it is the part of France nearest to England: Cap Blanc-Nez rises 132 m, Cap Gris-Nez 50 m, and the chalk of the English side is only about 34 km across the water. The painter who named it, in the early twentieth century, was thinking of its light. For a client based in Lille the coast is the natural weekend extension, and the Pas-de-Calais beaches are broad, flat and windy: sand yachting and long walks are the pastimes.

Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is the polished end of it. It has been a resort of the British since the Edwardian era, with mock-Tudor villas, a racecourse, golf clubs, tennis and riding in the pine forest, and its airport, named after Queen Elizabeth II, is used mostly by private aircraft. A light jet from the London fields is on the ground in about 35 minutes. From Lille the coast is about two hours by road, which is why some clients fly to Lille for business and then take an aircraft or a helicopter on to the coast for the weekend.

The Belgian border cities and the beer

The border is invisible on this side of Lille. Both countries are in Schengen, and the road to Belgium has no check, so a party can lunch in Tourcoing and dine in Kortrijk or Tournai on the same evening. Bruges is about 75 km and an hour and ten minutes away, and Brussels about 110 km, an hour and a half by road or about thirty-five minutes by TGV. Ghent and Antwerp are on the same axis, and Belgian beer is reason enough to cross. We book the car and the table, and the aircraft waits at Lesquin.

Flying to Lille with a dog or a cat

For a pet the paperwork is the part of a trip to northern France that needs planning, and the flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of forty minutes most simply sleep. The date on the health certificate is the detail that goes wrong, because the certificate is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU.

private flight with animals

What an EU country such as France asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Lille run

– France does not ask for tapeworm treatment on the way in, only Britain asks for it on the way home, so it is a vet appointment you book in Lille or wherever you are staying towards the end of the trip. Count back from the departure time, because the window is 24 to 120 hours and a flight that moves by a day can move the window out of reach;

– The order of the chip and the vaccine matters. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be refused entry, so the certificate is checked line by line before the flight, not at the terminal;

– A weekend in Lille and Flanders is easy with a dog, and a day trip to Belgium is another matter. Ask the hotel and the restaurants about the animal, and tell us if Ypres or Bruges is in the programme, so that we check the paperwork for the whole route.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Lille calendar: one big weekend and a few long seasons

Lille has a mild northern climate and no real off-season, but it has one weekend that changes everything. The Braderie fills the city on the first weekend of September, and the spring cycling classic and the Christmas weeks matter nearly as much to the price as the weather does.

January to March
Grey, damp and quiet. Business visits and short city breaks dominate, the Eurostar competes hard for the single traveller, and fog can hold an aircraft on the ground for an hour or two, which a Category III approach reduces. A good period for an easy booking
April
Paris-Roubaix, the one-day cycling classic known as the Hell of the North, is run on a Sunday in April over about 260 km, with more than 50 km of cobbles and the forest trench at Arenberg, and finishes on the concrete track of the Roubaix velodrome. The women's race is held the day before. The roads, the hotels around Roubaix and the cars are the tight resources, and the aircraft is not
May and June
Long evenings, the best weather for the Opal Coast and the Flanders cemeteries, and the point at which a Lille 3000 season may open. That festival of exhibitions and parades is a themed season repeated about every three years and lasting several months, sometimes from spring to autumn and sometimes from autumn to winter, so we check with you whether one is running on your dates
July and August
Summer holidays. Arras holds the Main Square Festival in early July, the Opal Coast fills with families from Friday to Sunday, and Le Touquet is at its liveliest. The aircraft that brought a party often goes home empty, which is where most summer empty legs come from
First weekend of September
The Braderie de Lille, the largest flea market in Europe, held on a Saturday and a Sunday, with stalls along kilometres of the city's streets, more than two million visitors, and mussels and chips everywhere. Hotels are full, parking in the centre is restricted and park-and-ride sites ring the city, so the transfer from Lesquin needs planning. Book the aircraft, the hotel and the transfer together, ideally two months ahead
October and November
A quiet autumn, with the Arras Film Festival in November and the Christmas market opening in the second half of the month. Good conditions for golf and the coast, and an easy booking
December
The Lille Christmas market fills Place Rihour from about the third week of November to the end of December, with a Ferris wheel 50 m high on the Grand Place and a closed day on 25 December. Arras, Roubaix and other towns of the metropolitan area hold their own markets. Weekend breaks built around the market are the usual booking, and the Friday and Sunday legs are the ones to reserve early

Why the Braderie weekend costs more

The aircraft are rarely the problem. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Lille is within easy reach of it. What gets tight is everything around the jet: the hotel rooms in the city, the cars, and the transfer from Lesquin into crowded streets with restricted parking, with the general aviation handling hours and the 48-hour notice leaving no room for improvisation. A booking made two weeks before the Braderie can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Paris or Brussels, and that costs more. The same booking made two months earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weekends a charter to Lille can usually be arranged in a day or two, provided the handler's notice fits.

Ways to bring the Lille price down

  • Choose the day. A weekday arrival inside the general aviation hours of 07:00 to 21:00 local is the cheapest and the simplest, and a late arrival means a request to the handler;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Paris or Brussels takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
  • Pick the cabin for the people, not the mileage. On a light jet from Biggin Hill and from Exeter the price is the same £5,300, because of the minimum on short sectors, and from Luton the step up from a Phenom at £5,700 to a Citation XLS+ adds £1,100, so ask for both figures.

Types of flights

Lille produces a different mix from the Alpine or the Italian destinations we cover, because it is a business city on the crossing of three countries, with the battlefields, the coast and the beer cities on its doorstep.

  • Business and trade visits to Euralille and the metropolitan area of about 1.5 million people;
  • Remembrance trips to Ypres, Vimy and the cemeteries of the Salient and Artois, often with a family and a guide;
  • City breaks built around the Braderie, the Christmas market, the Palais des Beaux-Arts and an estaminet;
  • Cycling weekends around Paris-Roubaix in April;
  • Opal Coast weekends at Le Touquet, with golf, the beach and a hotel;
  • Cross-border days in Bruges, Ghent and Brussels that start and end at Lesquin.

The day trip is the one to look at closely. Land at about nine, leave at five in the afternoon local time and you are back on the British side by about twenty to five, UK time, with eight hours on the ground in between. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. We quote it both ways, so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Lille has no single event that creates them every week, so they come from the rhythm of a business city with a tourist season, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Lille empty legs come from

– Event weekends. Aircraft that bring a party to the Braderie on the Friday and leave empty on the Sunday, or arrive empty to collect them, put a leg on the market towards Britain or Paris;

– Cycling and Christmas weekends. Paris-Roubaix and the Christmas market produce one-way arrivals followed by a repositioning flight, and an outbound leg on the Monday morning is the one most often offered;

– Northern loops. Operators moving aircraft between Lille, Paris, Brussels and the London fields put short hops on the market, and those hops can be cheap.

Because the Lille corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Lille match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In Lille a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The city is small enough to cross by car, and the places where rotary flight changes the journey are the Opal Coast, the battlefields of Flanders and Artois, and the link with a jet that lands somewhere else. Lesquin lists helicopter stands in its AIP, so the airport can take a helicopter on arrival, but we cannot point to a helicopter operator based there, so an aircraft is normally positioned from elsewhere in the north of France or from Belgium, and the quote says from where.

Lille to Le Touquet
about 58 nm by air, against about two hours on the road, for a party heading to the coast for the weekend
about 38 minutes
Lille to Ypres
about 20 nm by air, against about forty minutes by car, for a party that wants the memorials without the road
about 18 minutes
Lille to Arras
about 21 nm by air, against about 45 minutes by car, for a party touring the battlefields of Artois
about 19 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a hotel lawn or a car park before the quote is written, not after it. Cemeteries and memorial sites are not landing sites, and we say so before anyone plans on it;

– Weather sets the schedule. Low cloud and fog can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– A flight across the Belgian border has its own paperwork. Tell us where you want to land in Belgium when you ask for the quote, and book the helicopter together with the jet.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for scenic and coastal work, the wider H130 for hotel transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Lille charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

DAY TRIP · OUT AND BACK

A morning meeting in Euralille and home for dinner

Biggin Hill - Lille and return, Citation CJ3+, about 40 min each way · 4 pax

Wheels up at seven, on the ground at Lesquin at about twenty to nine local time, in the meeting by ten and back at Biggin Hill in the late afternoon. The aircraft and crew waited on the apron rather than going home, which is a real line in the quote and still comes in below two separate one-way charters. The handler had the passenger list two days ahead, and the Tuesday date was chosen because of the 48-hour notice.

BRADERIE WEEKEND · THE ROOMS WENT FIRST

Six guests, a Friday arrival and crowded streets

London Luton - Lille, Citation XLS+, about 45 min · 6 pax

The jet was easy and the rest was not. The hotel rooms and the cars were the first things to go for the first weekend of September, so we confirmed them before the aircraft, asked the handler for a stand close to the terminal and the cars to meet the party at the aircraft, and had the driver plan the way in around the crowds. The party was in the old town within half an hour of landing.

FLANDERS DAY · A CAR AT THE AIRCRAFT DOOR

A family visit to the memorials and cemeteries

Farnborough - Lille, Citation CJ3+, about 45 min · 4 pax

They wanted a full day around Ypres and a place at the Menin Gate at eight in the evening, so we booked the jet to Lille, a car with a driver who knew the Salient, and the flight home that same night. The general aviation hours end at nine, so we asked the handler in advance for a late departure and told the customs post, which stays open until eleven, the same.

OPAL COAST WEEKEND · THE OTHER AIRPORT

Landing at Le Touquet instead of Lille

Biggin Hill - Le Touquet, Citation CJ3+, about 35 min · 4 pax

A golf weekend that had started as a Lille booking turned out to be entirely on the coast, so we moved the arrival to Le Touquet, the field on the edge of the resort. The airfield keeps daytime hours and closes in the evening, so the Sunday departure was set for late afternoon, and the customs request carried every passport number.

CITY BREAK · A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a spaniel for a long weekend

Southampton - Lille, Citation CJ3+, about 45 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment near the hotel for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the hotel took the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages rather than three.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING SOUTH

A jet already going your way

Lille - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 40 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Lille

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Lille?

About 40 minutes from London City and Biggin Hill in a light jet, and around 40 minutes from Luton in a Phenom, covering roughly 129 to 158 nautical miles. From Birmingham or Manchester allow about 50 minutes to 1 hour, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 1 hour 20 minutes. France is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands at about twenty to nine local time. Eurostar takes about an hour and twenty minutes from St Pancras.

2How much does a private jet to Lille cost?

From about £5,300 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, London City, Farnborough, Southampton or Bristol, which share one price because short sectors carry a minimum, and £5,700 in a Phenom from Luton. A midsize cabin from Manchester runs about £6,800 and from Scotland about £8,150. The first weekend of September, the Christmas weeks and late arrivals outside the handling hours can price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Lille?

Lille Lesquin (LIL / LFQQ) for nearly every trip. It is open round the clock, has a 2,825 m runway with a Category III approach, a customs and border post listed from 06:00 to 23:00 local, and a general aviation handling service from 07:00 to 21:00 local with 48 hours' notice. It is about 7 km from the city. Le Touquet (LFAT) is the field for the Opal Coast, Brussels (EBBR) the big-airport alternative about 110 km away, and Lille-Marcq is a grass airfield for recreational flying, not for a flight from Britain.

4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Lille?

Britain is outside Schengen and France is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival at Lesquin. The airport lists customs and immigration from 06:00 to 23:00 local, and general aviation handling asks for 48 hours of notice. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU border system. We file the request and the aircraft paperwork.

5Can I fly on from Lille to Le Touquet or Ypres?

Yes. Le Touquet is 58 nautical miles west and about 35 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, with customs and police listed there from 09:00 to 19:00 local. A French domestic hop is flown by an EU operator or approved case by case, so we choose the aircraft for the leg. Ypres is in Belgium, about 40 km and forty minutes by road, and a helicopter can cover the last stretch if the landing site is agreed first.

6Can I take my dog to Lille on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and an EU country such as France asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. France does not ask for a tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
