Two quirks of the short sectors
– Palma to Ibiza is seventy-five nautical miles and takes about twenty-five minutes, of which barely fifteen are in the air. It still costs several thousand euros, because you are paying for two sets of handling, a crew and a slot at each end rather than for distance. The same logic applies to Valencia and Barcelona;
– A Mediterranean-based aircraft usually beats a British-based one on price for a continental departure, and sometimes for a British one too. If your dates are flexible by a day we look at what is finishing a job nearby before we look at what is parked at Luton.
Departures from anywhere else in Europe are priced the same way. Business aviation airports in Ibiza
Ibiza has one airport and no alternative on the island, so unlike most destinations there is no choice to make about where you land. What there is instead is a set of ground rules that shape the whole trip, and they are the reason experienced brokers talk about Ibiza in terms of slots rather than aircraft.
The parking problem, and why your jet may not wait for you
Ramp space on the island is the binding constraint in summer, and it works differently from anywhere else we fly. Parking is not confirmed until roughly fifteen days before arrival, and in the busiest weeks requests are simply refused. Worse, any change to your schedule cancels a parking approval you already hold and sends the request to the back of the queue. The practical result is that in July and August the aircraft frequently drops you and flies out empty to Palma, Valencia or Barcelona, returning when you leave. Larger cabins feel it hardest: aircraft above roughly twenty-one metres of wingspan can be held to about three hours on the ground and operated as pure drop-and-go. None of this stops you flying, because slots to set down and collect passengers are still issued when parking is not. It simply has to be in the plan and in the price from the beginning.
How we work around it
– Firm dates first, everything else after. Slots cannot be requested very far ahead, but the aircraft can be held, and a booking with settled timings gets a far better window than one still being negotiated on the Thursday;
– Friday to Monday is the crush. A Tuesday or Wednesday arrival costs less, gets the hour you asked for, and puts you on the island while everyone else is still queuing at Gatwick;
– Right-size the aircraft. A light jet with a modest wingspan has options in August that a large cabin does not, and on a two-hour flight nobody has ever regretted the smaller cabin as much as they would regret a three-hour ground limit;
– Ask about the return at the same time as the outbound. Repositioning the aircraft twice is normal here and it is cheaper quoted as one job than as two.
Handling is done through the general aviation terminal on the south-west side of the field, a few minutes from the commercial building and entirely separate from it, with customs and passport control inside and cars brought to the aircraft. Night operating limits at Ibiza are described differently by different sources, so rather than print a figure we confirm the exact position for your date when the slot is requested.
Spain is in the Schengen area and Britain is not, so there is a border to cross, and on a private arrival it is crossed beside the aircraft rather than in a hall. British passports need no visa for a holiday. If your trip continues to Formentera, note that it has no airport at all, which is covered further down this page.
When to fly, and what the calendar does to the price
Few destinations we cover have a season this sharply defined. The island effectively opens in late May and closes at the end of September, and inside that window the difference between a good week and a bad one is measured in thousands of euros rather than in weather.

Three levers that actually change the number
– Move off the weekend. Friday out and Sunday back is the most expensive shape a trip can have on this route, because it is the shape everyone else wants. Shifting by two days regularly saves a fifth of the cost and buys you the arrival time you asked for;
– Move off the peak. June and September deliver the island at its best for meaningfully less than late July and August. The opening and closing weekends are the exceptions and price like peak;
– Match the aircraft to the group rather than the occasion. Six people do not need a large cabin for a two-hour flight, and the smaller aircraft is also the one with more options on a full ramp.
Flying to Ibiza with a dog or a cat
Spain asks nothing complicated of an animal arriving from Britain, and the way home is the ordinary European route with no blood test and no waiting period. What deserves attention on this particular island is not the paperwork but the heat and the ground time.
The document set is short:
- An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
- A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was done;
- An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued within 10 days of entering the EU and valid for the return to Britain for up to six months;
- Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
- Praziquantel from a Spanish vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.
What the island adds to the usual checklist
– Apron heat. A Balearic afternoon in August is punishing on tarmac, and the walk from the terminal to the aircraft is in full sun. For animals we schedule morning or evening movements and keep the ground time to what the formalities require;
– The onward leg. If a helicopter or a boat to Formentera follows the flight, the operator has to agree to the dog before anything is booked, and boat crossings in a swell are harder on an animal than the flight was. We settle both at the quote stage;
– The worming appointment for the trip home. It has to happen in Spain inside the 24 to 120 hour window, and in high season island vets book up. We arrange it alongside the flight rather than leaving it to the week you travel.
On board there is no hold and no weight limit, so a large dog travels the same way a small one does, on the cabin floor beside you, and two hours is short enough that most sleep through it. Ferrets, birds and anything less usual have their own rules, gathered on our flying with pets guide.
Types of flights
Ibiza is a leisure route above all, and the brief usually arrives as a group and a weekend rather than as a schedule. What we are asked for, roughly in order of frequency:
- Weekend groups of six to ten, out on a Friday and back on a Sunday or Monday, which is also the most competitive shape of trip on the whole route;
- Families taking a villa for a week or a fortnight, usually flying midweek and often with a dog;
- Birthdays, hen and stag weekends and private celebrations, where the group size moves right up to departure and the luggage is heavier than anyone admits;
- Yacht joinings, with the aircraft timed to the vessel rather than the other way round, and a tender or helicopter waiting;
- Corporate incentives and small conferences, which fill the shoulder weeks in June and September when the island is calmer;
- Island-hopping itineraries taking in Mallorca, Menorca or the Costa del Sol in the same week.
The one thing all of them share is that the date is fixed by something other than the flight, whether a villa booking, a party or a boat. That makes early confirmation more valuable here than on almost any route we sell: within Europe we regularly arrange departures the same day, but at Ibiza in August the aircraft is rarely the constraint and the slot is.
Empty Legs
If you are flexible about dates, this is one of the best routes in Europe on which to be flexible. The Britain to Balearics corridor produces more empty legs than almost any other in summer, and the reason is the shape of the traffic rather than luck.
The weekly rhythm that creates them
– Friday afternoon: aircraft head south full and come back north empty, because the passengers are staying for the weekend;
– Sunday evening: exactly the reverse. Jets fly down empty to collect and return north with a cabin full of tired passengers;
– All week: aircraft pushed off the ramp by the parking rules shuttle empty between Ibiza and Palma, Valencia or Barcelona. Short legs, but genuinely cheap ones.
Savings run from roughly forty to seventy-five per cent of a normal charter, which on this route can mean a light jet for the price of a handful of scheduled business class seats. The trade is that the operator owns the date, the hour and sometimes the departure airport, and a leg can vanish if the original booking shifts. Because the corridor is so busy, legs appear most weekends from June through September in both directions, which makes it worth registering interest for a week rather than chasing a single flight. Jet Sharing
Sharing splits an aircraft between parties travelling the same way on the same day, so the cost of the cabin divides instead of landing on one client. Of all the destinations we cover, Ibiza is where this makes the most sense, and the arithmetic explains why.
A two-hour sector on a light jet is the cheapest cabin in the fleet to begin with. Split between six or eight people it comes down to a figure that competes with a peak-season scheduled ticket, and you still leave from a private terminal thirty minutes before departure rather than three hours. Add the fact that this route runs to a weekly timetable everybody shares, out on Friday and back on Sunday, and the matching problem largely solves itself.
What a shared seat keeps
– The private terminal at both ends, which at Ibiza in August is the difference between ten minutes and two hours;
– Luggage measured by what the hold takes rather than by an allowance, though on a light jet that hold is genuinely small and soft bags travel far better than hard cases;
– A dog in the cabin, subject to the paperwork above and to the other passengers being told in advance.

The island is small enough that a helicopter looks like an extravagance until you try the coast road on a Saturday in July. From the airport to a villa in the north can take well over an hour then; by air it is a matter of minutes. And for Formentera there is no alternative worth the name, because the smaller island has no airport at all.

Formentera, and the honest comparison
There are two ways across and they suit different trips. The helicopter takes about ten minutes and lands at an authorised site, since the island has no official heliport and private landing points need permission arranged in advance. The alternative is a car from the airport to Ibiza port, roughly fifteen minutes, then a fast ferry. That works perfectly well, costs a fraction as much, and is the sensible choice with heavy luggage or a large group. What it is not is quick on a July afternoon when the port is at its busiest. We price both and say plainly which one fits the day you are travelling.
Two constraints worth knowing
– Private landing sites, at villas or estates, are individually authorised and that takes time. A helicopter to a specific address is arranged weeks ahead, not on the morning you land;
– Luggage is the usual limitation. Soft bags travel with the passengers and hard cases follow by road or boat, which on a week-long villa stay is worth planning rather than discovering at the aircraft.
Machines in regular use here run from the Airbus H125 and H130 for short island work to twin-engine types for over-water legs to Mallorca and to yachts, where two engines are the sensible minimum. June and September, on a weekday. The island is fully open in both months, the sea is warmest in September, and prices sit well below the late July and August peak. Avoid the opening weekend in late May and the closing weekends in September, which price like peak. Midweek travel also gets you the arrival slot you asked for.
5How do I get to Formentera from Ibiza airport?
There is no airport on Formentera, so it is either a helicopter, about ten minutes to an authorised landing site arranged in advance, or a car to Ibiza port, roughly fifteen minutes, followed by a fast ferry. The ferry costs a fraction as much and suits heavy luggage; the helicopter suits a tight schedule or a peak-season afternoon.
