Private jet charter in Bolivia

Bolivia has no coastline, yet the first obstacle for a private jet leaving London is an ocean: about 5,500 nautical miles of it lie between Britain and Santa Cruz. That distance chooses the aircraft before the guest list does, and the altitude of the Andean airports then decides how the rest of the journey is built. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Bolivia that also means a landing permit and an overflight permit from the civil aviation authority, and for La Paz a high-altitude performance chart that shows what the aircraft can lift from a runway at 4,061 metres.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Bolivia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Farnborough, a Gulfstream G550 to Santa Cruz Viru Viru, nonstop, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Bolivia?

Bolivia keeps UTC-4 all year and never changes its clocks, so La Paz is four hours behind Britain in winter and five hours behind while British Summer Time runs. These are the sectors from London Farnborough on a Gulfstream G550, gate to gate:

London to Santa Cruz
5,476 nautical miles, the lowland capital of business and the airport behind most itineraries
about 11 h 15 min
London to Cochabamba
5,567 nautical miles, the valley city in the middle of the country
about 11 h 25 min
London to La Paz
5,589 nautical miles, the seat of government, with the highest international runway in the world
about 11 h 25 min
London to Tarija
5,730 nautical miles, the wine country in the far south
about 11 h 45 min
London to Uyuni
5,744 nautical miles, the gateway to the largest salt flat on earth, the longest crossing of these
about 11 h 45 min

Landing after lunch, leaving after dinner

A take-off from Farnborough at 08:00 reaches Santa Cruz at about 14:15 local time in the British summer and at about 15:15 in winter, which leaves the evening for the hotel and a full night before the first meeting. The return runs the other way: leave Santa Cruz at 21:00, sleep on board, and the aircraft is on the ground in Britain at about 13:15 the next afternoon in summer and 12:15 in winter.

More than eleven hours in the air is a long duty day for two pilots, so the operator often adds a third crew member.

Tarija is 254 nautical miles farther than Santa Cruz, which is about 30 min in the air and £6,950 on the quote, so a Bolivian price always names the airport before the aircraft. The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– Range picks the aircraft. A Gulfstream G550 is published at 6,750 nautical miles, and Farnborough to Santa Cruz is 5,476 on our planned track, which leaves a margin of 1,274 for a headwind. A Bombardier Global 6000 at 6,000 would leave only 524, so we do not quote it on this route, and the two G650ER lines are there for clients who prefer the larger cabin;

– The arrival airport moves the price by only a few percent, because every Bolivian gateway lies within about 300 nautical miles of the others. La Paz from Belfast City on a G550 is about £1,350 above the Farnborough to Santa Cruz anchor. Every figure is for the trip out.

Private jet flights within Bolivia and to its neighbours

Bolivia is a country of altitude bands: the Altiplano above 3,600 metres, the valleys of the centre and south, and the eastern lowlands. Road journeys between them are long, so the aircraft earns its keep inside the country. Santa Cruz to La Paz is 310 nautical miles on our track and Santa Cruz to Sucre is 156. These are the sectors we are asked for, flown from Santa Cruz, with the neighbouring capitals that clients combine with a Bolivian trip:

Two limits on the internal sectors

– Altitude, not distance, sets the aircraft. At La Paz, Uyuni and Sucre a jet climbs more slowly and carries less, so we name the type only after the operator has checked its performance for the field and the day;

– Several smaller fields are served by one scheduled airline or none, so handling, fuel and customs cannot be assumed.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Bolivia:

Ultra-long range

The classes that cross from Britain without a stop. The G550 is the working choice for every Bolivian airport on this page, and the G650ER and Global 7500 add cabin size or margin.

Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h
Bombardier Global 7500 · 14 seatsfrom £8,300/h

Heavy jets

Large cabins with a range of about 4,000 to 5,000 nautical miles. They reach Bolivia with a planned stop, and inside the country they suit the longer sectors to Lima or Santiago.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h

Super-midsize

The class behind most internal legs from Santa Cruz, with the margin that the thin air asks for at La Paz.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Light jets

For Cochabamba, Sucre, Trinidad and other short hops of a few hundred nautical miles.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h

Turboprops

For short regional work in Bolivia, not for the journey from London.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Because a long-range jet is expensive by the hour and heavy for the high fields, the quote for a trip around Bolivia usually names Santa Cruz as the place where the second aircraft starts from, and says plainly which of the two legs each one flies.

Business aviation airports in Bolivia

Bolivia has two airports that matter for a foreign business jet, Santa Cruz and La Paz, and a ring of high or remote fields that need planning. Altitude, runway and customs status matter here more than the size of the terminal:

Airport Ground How it operates
Santa Cruz Viru Viru
VVI / SLVR
about 15 km north of the city, in the lowlands The arrival for the crossing from Britain. One concrete runway, 16/34, of 3,500 metres with an ILS, a tower and airport open round the clock, and a listed airport of entry with customs on site. Slots are listed as not required and handling as not mandatory, although we book a handler for every landing; Royal FBO Service, Consorcio Aviation (a World Fuel brand) and Pike Aviation are the names listed. The field stands at only 373 metres, so a heavy jet performs almost as at sea level.
La Paz El Alto
LPB / SLLP
about 13 km west of central La Paz, in the city of El Alto The highest international airport in the world, at 4,061 metres, with a main runway of 4,000 metres. Listed as open round the clock with customs and slots not required. The limit is performance: thin air cuts the take-off weight, which is why much international traffic uses Viru Viru, and the landing permit request must carry a high-altitude performance chart. Fuel is arranged through the handler against a fuel release, requested with the permit.
Cochabamba Jorge Wilstermann
CBB / SLCB
serves Cochabamba and the central valleys Two asphalt runways, 14/32 of 3,798 metres and 04/22 of 2,649 metres, at about 2,550 metres above sea level, and one of the three airports that permit agencies name for foreign private flights. A sensible middle step between the lowlands and La Paz. We confirm customs and handling for the date.
Sucre Alcantarí
SRE / SLAL
about 32 km south-east of Sucre The airport that took over Sucre's commercial flights, with an asphalt runway, 18/36, of 3,600 metres at about 3,100 metres above sea level. The old field, Juana Azurduy de Padilla (SLSU), is a military base, so a flight plan that names it is a mistake. Whether the new airport clears international arrivals is not confirmed, so we plan customs at Santa Cruz or La Paz.
Uyuni Joya Andina
UYU / SLUY
just north-west of Uyuni town An asphalt runway of 4,000 metres at about 3,665 metres above sea level, built for the salt flat. Handling and fuel are arranged for each visit, and guests from abroad are normally cleared at Santa Cruz or La Paz first.
Tarija Oriel Lea Plaza
TJA / SLTJ
in the south-east part of Tarija city A 3,050 metre asphalt runway at about 1,850 metres above sea level, run by the state agency NAABOL, with scheduled flights to the three big cities. A domestic field, so customs for a foreign aircraft are cleared elsewhere.

Three rules settle most Bolivian trips before a quote goes out:

The permit: days, not hours

Landing and overflight permits are both required, and private and charter flights are treated alike. The civil aviation authority, the DGAC, is listed as asking for four business days for most requests, while another source lists a minimum of 48 hours; we plan on the longer figure. It is listed as working Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30 local time, and a change of schedule, aircraft or crew goes back to the authority before the flight.

Documents

The authority wants the airworthiness and registration certificates, crew licences and medicals from the state of registry, the original worldwide liability insurance policy and the page of the flight manual that shows the maximum take-off weight. Leaving the weight out of the first request is a listed cause of delay.

La Paz is its own case

A request for La Paz also needs the high-altitude performance chart from the aircraft manual. If the chart does not show a safe take-off weight for the planned departure, the plan changes: fewer passengers, less fuel, or a different aircraft.

The Andes are performance country

At La Paz and Uyuni the air pressure is only about 60 to 65 percent of the sea-level figure, and a heavy aircraft needs more runway and climbs shallower. The practical answer is to fly the long leg into Santa Cruz, move the party to the mountains on a smaller jet, and refuel the long-range aircraft at 373 metres before the way home.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Bolivia is outside the European Union and the Schengen area, and the entry rules for a British citizen are short. Immigration and customs are cleared at an airport of entry, which for a private flight means Santa Cruz or La Paz.

Passports
The passport must be valid for at least six months after the day of arrival and have at least two blank pages. A British citizen needs no visa for tourism
every passenger, children included
Length of stay
Tourists can stay up to 90 days within a year without a visa, although officers often issue a 30-day stamp and the full period can still be used. Work, study and business stays need separate approval
check the stamp
At the airport
Take the entry stamp on arrival, because a traveller without one pays a fine on leaving. Officers may ask for proof of where you are staying, at least for the first night
keep the booking to hand
Crew
Crew named on the general declaration can be given a visa on arrival, usually valid for up to 72 hours
listed by the operator
Customs
The rules are strict. Anything that may be prohibited, taxed or dutiable must be declared on the customs declaration form
declared at the desk
Health
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required of travellers arriving from a country on the transmission-risk list, which matters if the jet positions through one. The NHS TravelHealthPro guide for Bolivia covers vaccines and altitude
check before you fly

Permits, security and the way home

The operator requests the landing and overflight permits, and the handler checks them against the flight plan. We suggest reading the FCDO travel advice for Bolivia before you book. It advises against all but essential travel to the Chapare region of the Cochabamba department, including Villa Tunari and the highways that cross it, and it warns of road blockades that can change without notice, so a road transfer is planned with spare time.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do.

Which airport for which part of Bolivia

The arrival airport follows from one address: the office in Santa Cruz, the hotel in La Paz, the salt flat in the south-west. These are the usual pairings:

Santa Cruz and the lowlands
The commercial heart of the country, about 15 km from the airport, and the base for the Jesuit missions to Chiquitos and Moxos
Santa Cruz Viru Viru
La Paz and the Altiplano
The city stands at about 3,650 metres, and its southern district, Zona Sur, lies lower at 2,800 to 3,200 metres. Lake Titicaca is about 68 km away
La Paz El Alto, or Santa Cruz and a short hop
Cochabamba and the valleys
A milder climate at about 2,550 metres, in the centre of the country
Cochabamba
Sucre
The constitutional capital and the seat of the judiciary, 32 km from its airport
Sucre Alcantarí
The salt flat
The Salar de Uyuni lies at about 3,650 metres, and the train cemetery sits about 3 km outside the town
Uyuni
The north and south
Tarija is the quiet southern city, and Trinidad and Rurrenabaque take the river country. We price them as a domestic leg from Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz, then on

Santa Cruz, La Paz and the salt flat: what our clients go for

Santa Cruz is where the money is made. The city proper holds about 1.6 million people and produces about a third of Bolivia's economic output, and it receives more than 40 percent of the country's foreign direct investment. Banking and agro-industry lead, and Expocruz, the largest exhibition fair in Bolivia, fills the hotels once a year. Bolivia exports natural gas, gold, zinc, silver, tin and soya products, so many of our trips are boardroom days of two or three nights.

La Paz is the political capital in everything but name. The presidency, the legislature and all the foreign embassies sit there, and the city produces about a quarter of national output. Its centre is a bowl of steep streets at about 3,600 metres, and the state-run cable-car network, Mi Teleférico, is the quickest way across it.

Lithium is the other reason for interest. Bolivia holds about a fifth of the world's known lithium resources, most of them under the Salar de Uyuni, which is also the largest salt flat in the world, about 10,500 square kilometres at about 3,650 metres. Incahuasi island, a former volcano crowned with giant cacti, rises out of the white.

The salt flat has a British footnote. British engineers built the railway to Uyuni in the late nineteenth century to carry minerals to the Pacific ports, and the abandoned locomotives of the train cemetery are left from the collapse of mining in the middle of the last century.

The Bolivian year: when the Altiplano is dry and the salt flat is a mirror

Bolivia has no single season. The Altiplano, the valleys and the lowlands keep different calendars, and the weather that suits one region rarely suits another:

November to March
the rainy season. Most rain falls in La Paz between November and March, with January the wettest month, and Santa Cruz also peaks in December and January. On the Salar de Uyuni a thin layer of water turns the flat into a mirror, with rainfall reaching about 80 mm in January
wet season
April to May
the rain fades. Rainfall at Uyuni drops to only 1 to 3 mm a month from April onwards
shoulder
June to August
the driest months in La Paz are June and July. Nights on the high ground are very cold, and the cold winds called surazos can reach Santa Cruz in winter
dry season

Climb in steps, even in a jet

A jet lets a guest go from sea level in Britain to 4,061 metres in a day, which is exactly the way to meet altitude sickness. The sensible plan is to land at Santa Cruz at 373 metres, rest there, and fly up to Cochabamba or La Paz the next day. The long-range jet stays at Viru Viru, a second jet makes the climb, and the two legs together cost about £161,250 one way against £157,550 for the direct flight to La Paz. Anyone with a medical condition should ask a doctor first.

The Bolivian calendar: Alasitas, the Oruro carnival and Gran Poder

The dated events are few, and the biggest ones pull on a single airport:

24 January
Alasitas in La Paz, a fair of miniature goods, from houses to diplomas, offered to Ekeko, the Aymara god of abundance, and open for about a month
February or March
The Carnival of Oruro, recognised by UNESCO, with more than 28,000 dancers in 48 groups and about 400,000 visitors. The Carnaval Cruceño in Santa Cruz follows the same season
Late May or June
Gran Poder in La Paz, held around the Holy Trinity, with about 40,000 dancers and 7,000 musicians from 69 fraternities

The festivals fall in the weeks when hotels, cars and aircraft are all in short supply, and the permit lead time does not shrink for them, so a request for La Paz in Gran Poder week or for Oruro in carnival week should go to the operator as soon as the dates are fixed.

Flying to Bolivia with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travelling with its owner can enter Bolivia without quarantine if the paperwork is right, and the barrier is the timetable. The listed entry point for pets is El Alto at La Paz, where the animal and the papers are inspected, so for a private flight we confirm the airport, the inspector and the paperwork in writing before the flight.

The one fact to read before you book

The certificate is a British one. An official vet signs the export health certificate for cats and dogs to Bolivia after an examination made no more than 96 hours before export, and the rabies vaccination must have been given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before export. The British form also refers to a permit from the Bolivian veterinary service, so we check whether one is needed. Guides for owners add that the certificate is endorsed by the Bolivian consulate, with a parasite treatment shortly before entry.

The way home is the harder half. Bolivia is not a listed country, so the animal returns on a Great Britain pet health certificate, and the rabies blood test must be taken at least 30 days after the vaccination. Entry to Britain is not allowed until three months after the date of the sample. A dog also needs tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing.

  • A microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, and a wait of at least 21 full days after the vaccination, both of which the return to Britain requires, although Bolivia itself only recommends the chip;
  • No more than five animals per traveller on the way back, and more than that, or an animal travelling without its owner, is treated as a commercial consignment.

The three-month count is the point. A weekend with a pet in Bolivia does not work unless the blood sample was taken at least three months before the return, so we build the timetable backwards from the date of landing in Britain.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Bolivian run there are few, because few aircraft can make the crossing.

Where Bolivian empty legs come from

– A long-range jet that flew a party out to Santa Cruz and returns to Britain without passengers, which is the commonest leg;

– A jet repositioning to Santa Cruz for a booking that starts there, which turns the outbound crossing into a bargain for anyone who can leave on the operator's date.

A client who can offer a window of several weeks has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Bolivian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (Belfast) - Bolivia (Santa Cruz VVI) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £64,400
Bolivia (Santa Cruz VVI) - UK (London Farnborough) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £64,850
Bolivia (Santa Cruz VVI) - UK (Manchester) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £65,100
UK (London Biggin Hill) - Bolivia (Santa Cruz VVI) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £65,200
Bolivia (La Paz LPB) - UK (Bristol) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £65,450
UK (London Gatwick) - Bolivia (Cochabamba CBB) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £66,100

How to read those figures

Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A G550 home from Santa Cruz to Farnborough with sixteen seats comes to about £4,050 a head. Set each line beside the same sector in the first table: the saving is large in money and small in time, and a month of flexibility is the minimum worth offering on this route.

Helicopter work in Bolivia is arranged case by case, and we do not publish a standing price list for it. Availability depends on which machine can be positioned, and the thin air above 3,000 metres limits what a helicopter can lift, so a rotorcraft that carries six people at Santa Cruz may carry fewer at La Paz. The one transfer clients ask about is short:

La Paz El Alto to Copacabana
on the shore of Lake Titicaca, a straight-line distance of 58 nautical miles
about 40 min

The time is a straight-line estimate at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the helicopter type, the route and the landing site for your date. We confirm landing permission at the destination before the quote is issued.

Bolivian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

SANTA CRUZ · THE BUSINESS TRIP

Two directors and three days of meetings

Farnborough - Santa Cruz, Gulfstream G550, about 11 h 15 min each way · 2 pax

Wheels up at eight, on the ground after lunch on the local clock, and a night in the city before the first meeting. The aircraft stayed on the ramp at Viru Viru for the three days.

LA PAZ · THE ALTITUDE STEP

Four guests and a week on the Altiplano

Edinburgh - Santa Cruz, Gulfstream G550, then Santa Cruz - La Paz, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 15 min · 4 pax

The party slept at Santa Cruz and flew up to La Paz the next morning, which spared them the worst of the first night at height.

UYUNI · THE SALT FLAT

A family of six and a day on the white

Santa Cruz - Uyuni, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 10 min each way · 6 pax

A mid-size jet took the family to Uyuni, where handling and fuel had been arranged for the visit. They crossed the flat by four-wheel drive and were back at the hotel for dinner.

SUCRE · THE CAPITAL

Two lawyers and a hearing in the judicial capital

Santa Cruz - Sucre, Phenom 300E, about 50 min each way · 2 pax

The party cleared customs at Santa Cruz and flew on to Sucre by light jet.

COCHABAMBA · THE VALLEYS

A couple and a week in the middle of the country

Southampton - Cochabamba, Gulfstream G550, about 11 h 20 min · 2 pax

The G550 had range for Cochabamba with a margin, so there was no stop.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE DRY SEASON

A flexible return from Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz - London Farnborough, Gulfstream G550 empty leg, about 11 h 15 min · 4 pax

The client gave us a window of ten days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £64,850, under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Bolivia

1How long does it take to fly to Bolivia by private jet?

About 11 hours 15 minutes from London to Santa Cruz on a Gulfstream G550, around 11 hours 25 minutes to La Paz and about 11 hours 30 minutes to Sucre. Bolivia is four or five hours behind Britain, depending on the season.

2How much does a private jet to Bolivia cost?

From about £154,450 one way from Farnborough to Santa Cruz on a Gulfstream G550. La Paz from Farnborough on a G550 is about £157,550. Santa Cruz to Cochabamba on a regional jet is from £5,950.

3Which airport should a private jet use in Bolivia?

Santa Cruz Viru Viru for most trips: it is a listed airport of entry open round the clock, with a 3,500 metre runway at 373 metres above sea level. La Paz El Alto suits guests who must land in the capital, but it stands at 4,061 metres.

4Can a private jet land in La Paz, and does the altitude matter?

Yes. El Alto has a 4,000 metre runway and is open round the clock. The permit request must include the high-altitude performance chart from the aircraft manual, and a heavy jet leaving La Paz is limited in weight.

5What paperwork does a private flight to Bolivia need?

British citizens can visit for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days within a year, and the passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival with two blank pages. The operator requests a landing permit and an overflight permit from the civil aviation authority, with about four business days of notice as a rule.

6Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Bolivia?

Yes. The animal needs a British export health certificate signed by an official vet after an examination within 96 hours, and a rabies vaccination given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before export. The way home needs a rabies blood test and a wait of three months from the sample date, and a dog needs tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before landing.
