Private jet charter in Malawi

Malawi lies about 4,460 nautical miles from London in a straight line, more than an Embraer Praetor 600 can fly without refuelling. The trip is shaped by two airports with fixed opening hours, a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority and a visa that British passengers buy on arrival. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Services at the Malawian airports are limited, and we say plainly what we can arrange.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Malawi depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Lilongwe with one technical stop in Cairo, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Malawi?

Malawi keeps Central Africa Time all year, two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, so two hours ahead of London in winter and one hour ahead in summer. These are the sectors to Lilongwe, gate to gate, with the aircraft we would normally propose from each field:

Biggin Hill to Lilongwe
4,709 nautical miles, the closest of the London fields that suit a long sector, and the basis for the price at the top of the page
about 12 h on a Praetor 600 with a stop in Cairo
Farnborough to Lilongwe
4,734 nautical miles, the usual choice for Surrey, Hampshire and the Thames Valley
about 12 h on a Praetor 600 with a stop in Cairo
Manchester to Lilongwe
4,614 nautical miles, the main departure for the north of England, flown nonstop on a larger aircraft
about 9 h 55 min on a Global 6000, nonstop
Edinburgh to Lilongwe
4,768 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, also flown nonstop on a larger aircraft
about 10 h 15 min on a Global 6000, nonstop

Why the stop, and why the opening hours matter

The Praetor 600 is quoted at roughly 4,000 nautical miles of range, and the direct line from London to Lilongwe is about 4,460. The aircraft has to land once on the way, and we plan that stop in Cairo, which splits the journey into about 1,963 and 2,746 nautical miles. A Global 6000 flies the whole distance and saves the hour or so that a stop costs.

Lilongwe is listed with airport hours of 0530 to 1500 UTC, which is 7.30 am to 5 pm local time, with other times only on request, and the control tower is listed from 0400 to 1700 UTC. A sector of eleven hours or more has to be timed to land well inside that window.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The same Biggin Hill departure on a Global 6000, nonstop, comes to about £121,000, which is £47,450 more than the Praetor with a stop. The Praetor is the economical choice, the Global the faster one;

– A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies home empty. For a stay of several days the aircraft either waits at Lilongwe or Blantyre, with parking and the crew's hotel as lines of their own, or flies back and returns for you.

Private jet flights within Malawi and to its neighbours

Malawi is long and thin. Blantyre is only 138 nautical miles from Lilongwe in a straight line, and Mzuzu in the north is 147. A foreign-registered aircraft does not normally carry passengers between two points inside one country, so we do not sell internal flights. The sectors we are asked for are the ones to the neighbours and to Johannesburg:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way
Lilongwe - Harare (Zimbabwe)

Domestic sectors and the neighbours

– Between Lilongwe and Blantyre a party uses a scheduled flight or the road;

– Each neighbour is a separate country with its own permits and entry rules. Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa each need their own landing approval, which we check before we quote.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Business aviation airports in Malawi

Malawi has two international airports with customs, and every charter from Britain lands at one of them. Lilongwe is the default. Smaller airfields are listed, including Likoma, Karonga and Salima, but we found no data we could rely on for them:

Airport Ground How it operates
Lilongwe Kamuzu International
LLW / FWKI
in the Lumbazi suburb, about 20 km north of the centre of Lilongwe One asphalt runway, 14/32, 3,540 metres (11,614 feet) long, at an elevation of about 4,030 feet (1,230 metres). Listed hours are 0530 to 1500 UTC, other times on request, with the tower from 0400 to 1700 UTC. Airport of entry with customs, jet fuel and rescue and fire category 9. Slots are listed as not required but handling as mandatory
Blantyre Chileka International
BLZ / FWCL
about 13 km north-west of Blantyre; renamed Bakili Muluzi International, still listed as Chileka Two asphalt runways, 10/28 of 2,325 metres (7,628 feet) and 15/33 of 1,372 metres (4,501 feet), at an elevation of 2,555 feet (779 metres). Listed hours are 0530 to 1500 UTC, other times on request, tower 0400 to 1700 UTC. Airport of entry with customs, jet fuel and rescue and fire category 8. Slots and handling are listed as not required, but we use a handler on every trip
Mzuzu
ZZU / FWUU
serving Mzuzu, the regional town of the north One bitumen runway, 17/35, of 1,600 metres (5,250 feet), at about 4,115 feet. We found no customs status, fuel or handler for it, so a party for the north arrives at Lilongwe first
Club Makokola
CMK / FWCM
on the southern shore of Lake Malawi, just north of Mangochi A resort airstrip of about 1,200 metres, described by a lodge agent as open to private and commercial traffic. We found no customs or fuel record, so it suits only an onward hop

Neither airport has a business aviation terminal that we can name and describe. A flight-support directory lists JetMate Aviation, JetPlus Aviation Services, International Flight Planning Solutions and Just Aviation for Lilongwe, and a permit service lists airside transport, catering, crew hotels and fuel release among the services. We choose the handler and confirm in writing where the party is processed.

Three points settle most Malawian arrivals before a quote goes out:

Permit: the Civil Aviation Authority

Landing and overflight approvals come from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malawi. Permit services ask for operator, aircraft type, registration, take-off weight, purpose and schedule, but no official lead time is published, so we apply early.

Short validity

One permit service puts the validity of an overflight approval at 72 hours from the requested schedule. A delay of a day can mean a fresh approval, so we apply for the whole schedule.

Office hours

The Authority's working hours are listed as 0400 to 1700 UTC and the airports close in the afternoon. We confirm the charges for each flight.

Arriving from Britain: visa, cash and the Foreign Office advice

British passengers need a visa, but they buy it at the airport or online. The aircraft, on the other hand, needs its permit before it leaves Britain.

Visa
British citizens must apply for a visa. The Foreign Office says it can be bought on arrival, paid for in US dollars in cash, at 50 US dollars for a single entry (about £40), 150 for six months with multiple entries and 250 for a year, and that an e-visa exists
buy on arrival or online
Passport
valid for at least six months after the day of arrival, and not reported lost or stolen
check the expiry
Yellow fever
a vaccination certificate is required only when arriving from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk, and we check the planned stop against the list
check the itinerary
Cash
foreign cash must be declared on arrival, and Reserve Bank of Malawi permission is needed to hold or take out more than 1,000 US dollars unless it came from an authorised dealer
declare and keep the receipt

The Foreign Office advice, as published

The Foreign Office does not name any area of Malawi to avoid. It reports occasional kidnappings for ransom, with business people and wealthy individuals at higher risk and British nationals among those taken, together with mugging, bag-snatching and an increase in break-ins in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Limbe. It also warns of drink spiking and of political demonstrations, and advises avoiding large crowds.

The road death rate is high and the advice is to avoid travelling after dark. Fuel shortages are frequent, so we ask the handler to confirm the Jet A-1 uplift in writing before the aircraft leaves. Cyclones, floods and landslides are common from November to April and can close roads. For Mulanje Mountain it advises taking security advice from the Mountain Club of Malawi.

Clearance and the way home

On arrival, passengers and crew clear immigration and customs at Lilongwe or Blantyre, both of which are listed as airports of entry. The Foreign Office page does not describe private aircraft arrivals and tells travellers to ask the Malawi Revenue Authority how the rules apply, so the handler confirms in writing how the party is processed. One permit service says crew visas are issued on arrival through the general declaration, and we confirm that for each crew.

Coming home, a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation.

Which airport for which part of Malawi

Lilongwe is the default, Blantyre is better for the south, and the north is reached from Lilongwe:

Lilongwe and the centre
the capital, with the main international airport
Lilongwe
Blantyre, Mulanje and Zomba
the commercial centre and the mountains of the south, where Mulanje Massif reaches 3,002 metres
Blantyre
Majete and Liwonde
Majete in the lower Shire valley and Liwonde just south of the lake, both managed by African Parks
Blantyre
Cape Maclear and the southern lake
the Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO site, and the shore resorts near Mangochi
Lilongwe or Blantyre, then road or a short flight
Nyika and the north
the plateau park known for its zebras, and Mzuzu as the regional town
Lilongwe, then road or a local flight

Lilongwe, Blantyre and the lake: what our clients go for

Business and official visits come first. Lilongwe is the capital, Blantyre the commercial centre, and agriculture, led by tobacco and tea, the core of the economy.

For a visitor with time, Lake Malawi is the draw. It covers about 29,600 square kilometres, close to a fifth of the country, and is some 587 kilometres long. Inland there are elephants and hippos at Liwonde, a Big Five reserve at Majete and zebras on the Nyika plateau.

The Malawian year: the wet months and the dry ones

The climate has a wet and a dry season, and altitude matters as much as the month:

November to April
the wet season, with thunderstorms that peak in late March, and the lake and the lower Shire valley hot and humid; the Foreign Office adds cyclones, floods and landslides that can close roads
wet
May to September
the dry season, when rainfall nearly stops; from June to August the lake and the south are comfortably warm at around 23 degrees by day
dry

On Mulanje and Nyika, nights in June and July often drop to 6 to 8 degrees.

The Malawian calendar: storms, holidays and the dry window

Few dates drive a flight plan to Malawi, and we list the ones that change what is open or how the roads behave:

15 January
John Chilembwe Day, a public holiday
3 March
Martyrs' Day, a public holiday, in the weeks when the storms of the wet season peak
6 July
Independence Day, a public holiday, in the middle of the dry season
May to September
The dry window, the usual choice for road transfers and parks

What a holiday does to a flight plan

The permit office does not publish a holiday timetable, so we apply early for a trip near any of these dates.

Flying to Malawi with a dog or a cat

A pet can travel in the cabin, but the papers need planning.

The facts to read before you book

A pet-travel guide says a veterinary import permit from the Director of Animal Health is required for a pet arriving from Britain, valid for six months. Rabies vaccination must fall between 30 days and 12 months before arrival, and an original health certificate completed within 7 days of entry must be endorsed by a government vet. A microchip is recommended, and pets that meet the rules are not quarantined.

The same guide says pets enter by air through Lilongwe and that the airport veterinary officials should be told in advance. We found no official Malawian text, so we obtain the requirements in writing before the aircraft is confirmed.

Coming home, a pet from a country outside the simple British scheme, as we understand Malawi to be, needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, then a rabies blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample before the animal travels. The wait is not required if the animal was vaccinated and blood-tested, with a British health certificate or an EU pet passport, before it left, which is why we ask owners to do the tests before the outward flight. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. No more than five animals may travel with one person, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

We confirm in writing which entry point will receive the animal and which papers are needed. Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species are set out in our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On a route this long and this thin they are rare, and we do not promise one.

Where Malawian empty legs come from

– A charter that lands in Lilongwe and does not wait, so the aircraft returns to Europe empty;

– Aircraft repositioned from southern or East Africa after another contract.

Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Malawian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Malawi (Lilongwe) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £30,900
UK (London Luton) - Malawi (Lilongwe) Praetor 600 9 seats £31,100
Malawi (Lilongwe) - UK (Birmingham) Challenger 605 12 seats £40,300
Malawi (Lilongwe) - UK (Bristol) Challenger 605 12 seats £40,300
UK (Farnborough) - Malawi (Lilongwe) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £49,300
UK (Manchester) - Malawi (Lilongwe) Global 6000 13 seats £52,500

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Luton to Lilongwe with nine aboard works out at about £3,450 a seat, and with four aboard about £7,800.

Helicopter charter

We found no charter helicopter operator in Malawi that we can name and verify for a transfer between cities. We did find a short helicopter sightseeing flight over Liwonde National Park, run by African Parks and bookable with them or through a camp in the park. For anything else we confirm the machine, the crew and each landing site when a request comes in.

Lilongwe to Blantyre
in place of a long road transfer between the two cities
about 1 h 20 min

The time is a straight-line estimate at a cruise of about 115 knots, and daylight is the limit.
