Business aviation airports in Dalaman

Dalaman is the only civil airport on this stretch of coast, which removes a decision that most destinations require. It lies six kilometres south of the town, has a single runway of three thousand metres that takes every business aircraft category, and shares the field with a Turkish air force base on its northern side.

The general aviation terminal is a separate building with its own customs and passport control, and the walk from the aircraft to the car runs to a few minutes. Turkey requires a landing permit for private flights, which the handler files, and the paperwork is straightforward provided it is started a day or two ahead rather than on the morning of departure. Dalaman and the Turkish Riviera

Dalaman itself is a small agricultural town that happens to have an airport, and almost nobody stays there. What the name stands for is the coast either side: three hundred kilometres of pine-covered mountain dropping into water of a colour that photographs badly because nobody believes it. The Lycians built tombs into these cliffs two and a half thousand years ago and a good number are still there, visible from the deck of a boat.

Gocek is the reason this airport sees the traffic it does. Six marinas in a village of a few thousand people, sheltered water, and a gulf full of anchorages within an afternoon sail of each other, which together make it the natural starting point for a charter along this coast. Fethiye is larger and busier twenty minutes further on, Marmaris bigger again and considerably louder, and Kalkan and Kas to the east are where people go who have done the other two.

The season runs from May to November and the water stays swimmable well past the point at which the Aegean islands have shut for winter. July and August are hot, full and expensive; June and September are what most experienced visitors book; October is quiet, warm and the best value of the year on this page.

Where to stay

• D Maris Bay, Datca peninsula. A resort on its own bays west of Marmaris with a private beach club and a helipad, and the address most often asked for by clients who are not on a boat;

• Sail. The Gulf of Fethiye holds more sheltered anchorages within a day of each other than anywhere else in the eastern Mediterranean, and Tomb Bay, Wall Bay and the Twelve Islands are the standard first week;
• Oludeniz and the Blue Lagoon. The most photographed stretch of Turkish coast, and the paragliding off Babadag above it, which runs most of the year;
• The Lycian ruins. Rock tombs at Fethiye and Dalyan, the theatre at Kaunos reachable only by boat, and Xanthos and Patara an hour east;
• Saklikent gorge and the Dalyan mud baths, which are the two inland trips everyone ends up making;
• Iztuzu beach, a protected turtle nesting site at the mouth of the Dalyan river, and a very different proposition from the resort strips;
• Eat. Fish at the Fethiye market cooked by whichever restaurant you carry it to, and the mezze that come before it.

When the coast is busy

• Saturdays in July and August. Charter yachts change over on the same day and the whole coast moves at once, which makes it the hardest slot of the year to fill at short notice;
• The school holidays generally, from the end of June to the start of September;
• Turkish public holidays, when domestic traffic adds to the foreign arrivals and the marinas fill from the Istanbul end as well;
• June and September, which are the weeks experienced visitors book and which are busy without being impossible;
• October to April, when the coast is quiet, the season winds down and this becomes one of the better value long sectors we sell.
