Turku as a destination

Turku was founded in 1229 and was the seat of Finnish administration for most of the centuries under Swedish rule, until the Russian administration moved the capital to Helsinki in 1812. The university followed fifteen years later, after the great fire of 1827. What Turku kept was the cathedral, the castle and none of the government. It also kept a compact centre either side of the Aura, a food culture that locals will tell you is the best in Finland, and the water.

The archipelago is the reason most private arrivals come. Twenty thousand islands and skerries spread west and south from the city into the Baltic, and the Finnish relationship with them is not tourism but habit: a summer house on a rock, a boat, and three months in which to use both. The Archipelago Trail loops 250 kilometres through the inner islands over twelve bridges and nine ferries, and it starts at the edge of town.

The season is short and everyone knows it. June to August is when this city is fully itself, with the light lasting almost until midnight at the solstice.
