Private jet charter in Zakynthos

Zakynthos lies at the southern end of the Ionian chain, about three hours from the London fields by light jet, and its airport does something unusual for a Greek island: it takes no take-offs or landings at night, because loggerhead turtles nest on the beach beside the runway. Private Jets UK plans each Zakynthos charter around that curfew, the summer slot system and the sea at the other end, since the best things on the island are reached by boat. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The runway is 2,228 m long and the field is only about four kilometres from Zakynthos Town, so the flight is the simple part. What takes the thought is the timing of the arrival, the handler, and whether the week is meant for the turtle coast, the cliffs of the north-west or the neighbouring island of Kefalonia.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Zakynthos depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Zakynthos?

About 3 hours 10 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, about three and a half hours from Manchester and Birmingham in a midsize, and about three and three quarter hours from Scotland, with a two-hour clock change on arrival because Greece keeps Eastern European time. At 1,249 to 1,548 nautical miles from the British fields we use, Zakynthos is a long sector for a light jet but a comfortable one, and from the north of England and from Scotland we quote a midsize cabin beside it. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Biggin Hill at eight in the morning and you are on the ground at Zakynthos shortly after one o'clock local time, because the flight takes just over three hours in a Phenom and Greece is two hours ahead of Britain. The airport is about 4 km south-west of Zakynthos Town, so a late lunch on the harbour front is realistic on the day of arrival. Laganas is about 5 km from the apron, Tsilivi about 9 to 10 km and Keri roughly 15 km, which puts nearly every hotel and villa on the island within half an hour of the apron. The one clock that matters is the night restriction: a late departure from London has to land before it, so we build the day backwards from the closing time of the airport, not forwards from breakfast.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people with ordinary luggage, a light jet is the cheapest way to arrive and the runway is more than long enough for it. Three hours ten minutes from the south of England is an easy sit, and the quote is the lowest on the page;

– Six people, children, a pushchair and a week of beach gear: we price a midsize jet beside the light one. From Biggin Hill the Citation XLS+ costs about £3,950 more than the Phenom, and the larger hold is usually what settles it;

– A heavy jet is for a big family party, for a team that wants to work on the way, or for a trip that carries on to the Gulf. The 2,228 m runway suits these aircraft, and the question is the apron: parking is limited at Zakynthos, and it is settled with the handler before the quote leaves us.

Private jet flights from Zakynthos

Zakynthos is an end point, not a hub, and almost everything that leaves it is a flight home. The short sectors are to the neighbours: Kefalonia is half an hour away by turboprop, Athens under an hour, Corfu a little less. Italy lies across the Ionian Sea, and the longer sectors run to Vienna, Paris and the Gulf. Typical one-way prices:

Kefalonia, Athens and Corfu: who can fly them

Kefalonia is only 30 nautical miles from Zakynthos and Athens 151, but these are domestic Greek flights. A non-EU operator, which since Brexit includes the British ones, may not carry passengers between two Greek airports, so the rows to Kefalonia, Athens and Corfu are a guide to the price of the leg, not a promise that your London aircraft will fly it. We fly them with an EU operator that is entitled to domestic traffic, or tell you plainly that the ferry or a scheduled flight is the better answer. An empty positioning flight between two Greek fields is a different matter and is allowed, which is what makes a trip that lands in one island and leaves from another possible.

Before you accept an onward quote from Zakynthos

– Which aircraft flies the leg. A domestic sector needs an EU-registered operator, so the jet that brought you from London is usually not the one that takes you on, and we say which one it is when we quote;

– Whether it is one plan. A trip that lands at Zakynthos and leaves from Kefalonia, with the island week in between, costs less when the aircraft is positioned empty and the parking, the slot and the handler are asked for together;

– The hour of the leg. Zakynthos takes no night movements, so a departure that runs late can be moved to the next morning, and an onward connection has to be built with that margin.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Zakynthos:

Light jets, for up to four people

Just over three hours is a fair sit in a light jet, and it works well for a couple or a small family with modest luggage. The saving over a midsize cabin pays for a good part of a villa week, and a single runway of 2,228 m is generous for aircraft of this size.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, the usual choice for a villa week

A villa party arrives with far more than a weekend bag: beach gear, a pushchair, a case of food from home. A midsize cabin and its hold make the sector easy for five to eight people and take the luggage without argument.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a family gathering that travels as one party, for a team that wants to work in the air, or for a trip that carries on to the Gulf. The runway is long enough, and the real limits are the apron space and the hour of arrival, both checked before we quote.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops to Kefalonia, Athens and Corfu, where a jet saves too few minutes to justify its price. An EU operator flies the domestic ones, and we plan the leg with the main booking.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: the airport to a villa on the north coast, the cliffs above Navagio, or a hop across the strait to Kefalonia. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote, never on the day.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Zakynthos is far from the British fleet and has almost no based aircraft, so for a booking in the summer peak an aircraft is often positioned from Athens, Italy or the Turkish coast, and the quote may name one of those places as the starting point. That is normal for an island field, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports in Zakynthos

One airport serves the island and it is the right one for almost every trip. The others below matter because of the water: a neighbouring island with its own runway, a mainland field for parking, and the capital for a connection.

Airport What it gives you
Zakynthos Dionysios Solomos
ZTH / LGZA
The only airport on the island, about 4 km south-west of Zakynthos Town and close to the Laganas resorts. One asphalt runway, 16/34, 2,228 m long, run by Fraport Greece. Most of the traffic is summer charter, with the British the largest group, so the terminal is crowded on changeover days. Take-offs and landings at night are not accepted, to protect the nesting turtles. The airport is slot-coordinated in summer, handling is mandatory, prior permission is required and Jet A fuel is available. Handlers listed for the airport include Signature, Jetset Services and Universal Aviation
Kefalonia Anna Pollatou
EFL / LGKF
The neighbouring island's airport, 30 nautical miles from Zakynthos and about 8 km south-west of Argostoli. One asphalt runway, 14/32, 2,436 m long, also run by Fraport Greece. It is the field to choose when the trip is really to Kefalonia or Ithaca, and the second landing point of a two-island week where the aircraft arrives at one and leaves from the other
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos
ATH / LGAV
Greece's main airport, about 20 km east of the city centre and about 30 km by road. Two parallel runways of 4,000 m and 3,800 m, and a general aviation terminal run by Swissport Executive Aviation, which is listed as the only FBO, open at all hours, with customs and immigration on site. 151 nautical miles from Zakynthos. The place for a connection, a technical stop, or an aircraft that has to park while you are on the island
Kalamata
KLX / LGKL
A joint civil and military airport on the Peloponnese mainland, between Kalamata and Messini, with one asphalt runway, 17R/35L, of about 2,700 m. 71 nautical miles from Zakynthos. Joint-use fields in Greece need an additional permit, with about four business days' notice, so it is a parking idea we plan early and not a fallback for the day
Corfu Ioannis Kapodistrias
CFU / LGKR
The next jet field to the north, with a 2,373 m runway, 125 nautical miles from Zakynthos. In summer it carries its own executive lounge, a flat fee on each leg with passengers and a slot regime of its own, so we treat it as a destination in itself and not as a place to leave an aircraft

Four points settle most Zakynthos arrivals:

Handling and the lounge

Handling is mandatory, and the names that appear in the handlers' directories for Zakynthos are Signature, Jetset Services (the ExecuJet contact in Greece) and Universal Aviation. The Greek island guides that list a separate general aviation lounge with a flat fee per leg name Mykonos, Corfu and Kos, and Zakynthos is not among them. We still confirm in writing which terminal and which charges apply on your dates, and any fee appears as its own line in the quote.

Slots, permission and the night

Zakynthos is slot-coordinated in the summer season, and prior permission is required as well. In Greece a slot can be asked for up to 14 days ahead, with a tolerance of 15 minutes either side, and an unused slot has to be cancelled at least 12 hours before. The airport takes no night movements for the sake of the turtles, published as 22:00 to 05:00 local time in the summer schedule, and in the off-season it publishes short daily operating windows that are extended for individual flights. We take the exact hours from the notices for your date.

Border and passport

Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area and Britain is in neither, so you clear the border on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints at the EU entry system, though at busy airports the scanners are sometimes switched off, so follow the officer's instructions.

Car, boat and late nights

Give the driver the handler as well as the flight number, so that he waits where the aircraft stops. The airport is close to everything, which makes a late evening in the harbour realistic, but not a late landing: if a delay in London would push the arrival into the closed hours, the aircraft goes to Kefalonia or Athens or the departure moves to the morning. Plan the villa, the car and the boat in one message.

business aviation

Landing permits, the Schengen border and the way home

A private flight into Greece does not usually need a separate landing permit. What it needs is the prior permission and the slot, issued through the handler, and passengers on a private flight sign a declaration before departure that no fare has been paid. A charter is different: operators from outside the EU, which since Brexit includes British ones, need a permit from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority for charter flights, applied for at least five working days ahead. A British charter is therefore limited to the pattern UK - Greece - UK, and the rule that catches clients out is that the same aircraft may not carry passengers between two Greek airports. London to Zakynthos nonstop is fine, London to Zakynthos and on to Kefalonia with passengers is not, and for a trip that needs both we propose a different plan. We arrange the permits and say plainly when a trip cannot be flown as drawn.

For the flight home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and any passenger who needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the UK must hold it before boarding. British and Irish citizens are exempt. The handler who arranged the arrival files the Greek paperwork for the departure. Cash worth about £8,500 or more must be declared on entry to the EU.

From the apron to Zakynthos Town

Zakynthos is a compact island, about 405 square kilometres, with the airport just south of the town. Almost everything clients ask about is within an hour by road, and the places that need a boat are the ones people remember.

Airport to Zakynthos Town
about 4 km, with the harbour front, Solomos Square and the church of Saint Dionysios close together
typically 10 to 15 minutes
Airport to Laganas
about 5 km; the island's largest resort, on the bay that holds the turtle nesting beaches and the marine park, with a loud night-time strip
about 10 minutes
Airport to Tsilivi
about 9 to 10 km, north of the town; a family resort with a long sandy beach and a strip of tavernas and bars
about 15 minutes
Airport to Alykes
16 to 19 km on the north coast, a resort named after its old salt pans, with a shallow sandy beach that suits families
20 to 30 minutes
Airport to Keri
about 15 km to the far south-west; a village above cliffs of more than 300 m, with a lighthouse and a tavern terrace for the sunset
about 25 minutes
Zakynthos Town to the Navagio viewpoint
across the island to the cliffs above Anafonitria; the platform is free, a few minutes' walk from the car park, and part of the drive is on mountain road
40 to 50 minutes
Porto Vromi to Navagio by boat
the short crossing from the north-west coast to the cove below the viewpoint; boats from Agios Nikolaos take 20 to 25 minutes and include the Blue Caves
15 to 20 minutes
Agios Nikolaos to Kefalonia by ferry
the summer car ferry to Pessada, about 12 km from Argostoli; Agios Nikolaos is about 30 km from Zakynthos Town
about 1 hour 45 minutes

Four bases, and who goes where

– Zakynthos Town. A harbour town rebuilt after the great earthquake of the mid-twentieth century, so the arcades and the squares are low and regular, with the Venetian castle on the hill behind. It suits a short stay, a table on the water and anyone who wants the ferries and the evening walk on the doorstep;

– Laganas and Kalamaki. The long beach on the bay, closest to the airport, long popular with young holidaymakers, with bars and clubs in the main street and the turtle beaches a few minutes away. A group of friends who want the sea at the door choose it, a quiet couple do not;

– Tsilivi and Alykes. The north-east and north coast, with sandy beaches, shallow water and tavernas in a row. Families with children choose them, and the town is a short drive from Tsilivi when dinner needs more than a taverna;

– Keri and the south-west. A small village on the cliffs, the lighthouse a short walk away and the caves reached only by boat. It is the quiet end of the island, and the beaches are a drive down from the village.

Zakynthos Town, Keri and Tsilivi

The Venetians called the island Fiore di Levante, the flower of the East, and the town was one of the grand harbour towns of the Ionian until the earthquake of 12 August, in the middle of the twentieth century, destroyed most of the buildings on the island. It was rebuilt in the Ionian manner, with the arcades and squares kept low and regular, so that the harbour front still looks like the town the Venetians knew. It centres on Solomos Square, where the statue of Dionysios Solomos stands: Greece's national poet was born on the island, and the airport carries his name. The neoclassical Museum of Zakynthos on the square holds icons of the Cretan School and works from the Ionian tradition, and the Venetian castle on Bochali hill, with a view over the town and the sea, is where people go at sunset.

The church of Saint Dionysios stands at the port and is the centre of the island's religious life. It was begun in the early eighteenth century and completed in the 1760s, destroyed in an earthquake at the end of the nineteenth century, rebuilt and reopened after the Second World War, and its anti-seismic construction helped it to survive the great earthquake that followed. The saint's relic lies in a silver reliquary, and the bell tower, about 40 m high, is the landmark of the harbour. Two days a year the town belongs to him, 24 August and 17 December, when the icon is carried around Zakynthos Town in a litany.

Tsilivi is the family resort a few kilometres north of the town, with a long sandy beach, a row of restaurants and bars and an easy drive back to the harbour, which makes it a sensible first base for a first visit. Keri is the opposite: a village in the far south-west, on a hillside above cliffs more than 300 m high, with a lighthouse from the 1920s about a kilometre away on foot and a terrace for the sunset. The Keri caves lie at the southern tip and can be reached only by water, so a kayak or a boat tour is the way. The beaches are not within walking distance of the village, which is why a car is needed, and a client who wants peace stays at Keri after the day-trippers have left.

Navagio, the Blue Caves and the north-west cliffs

Navagio, the Shipwreck Beach, is a white cove enclosed by limestone cliffs on the north-west coast, with the rusting hull of the Panagiotis, which ran aground in the early 1980s, on the sand. There is no path to the beach, so it can be reached only by boat, and the usual departures are Porto Vromi, Agios Nikolaos and Zakynthos Town. Before you plan around it, check one fact. Landing on the beach has been banned since the cliff gave way, the ban has been extended more than once, and the boats that go there keep about 50 m off the shore. The cliff-top viewpoint above Anafonitria, with a platform and a few minutes' walk from the car park, is free, though access to it depends on the fencing along the cliff edge. We confirm the status of the beach for your dates before the quote, because it is a decision of the authorities and not of the boat operator.

The same boats go on to the Blue Caves, sea caves in the cliffs around Cape Skinari at the northern tip, which are reached only by small boats and are at their best in the morning light. A short excursion from Porto Vromi lasts one and a half to three hours, a longer one from Agios Nikolaos three to four, and a full day from Zakynthos Town six to eight, so the sensible plan for a party staying at Tsilivi or Alykes is the nearer port and the earlier boat. A private boat or a sea taxi can take the same route at your own pace, and a helicopter reaches the cliffs in about a quarter of an hour, but a landing in a protected area is never improvised.

Laganas Bay and the turtle zone: the rules

Laganas Bay is the reason the airport has a night curfew. It holds six nesting beaches with a combined length of about 5.5 km - Marathonisi, East Laganas, Kalamaki, Sekania, Dafni and Gerakas - and on average about 1,200 loggerhead nests a year, a large share of the Mediterranean total. The bay is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, a site of the European Natura network, and its rules bind every visitor, private clients included. Females lay their eggs at night from May to August, and the first hatchlings appear in July and keep coming for weeks, so the rules matter most in exactly the months when the island is busiest.

What the Laganas rules ask of a visitor

– At sea. The bay is divided into three zones. Boats are not allowed into Zone A at all; in Zone B they must stay below 6 knots and may not anchor; in Zone C they keep to the same speed but may anchor. A turtle seen at sea may be watched by no more than two vessels at a time, at under 2 knots, for a maximum of 10 minutes, at least 15 m away, with every other boat at least 45 m back. Feeding, touching or swimming with a turtle is out;

– On the beaches. The nesting beaches are open from 7 in the morning until sunset, and nobody may be on them between sunset and 7. Sunshades and beach activity stay within 5 m of the water, nest cages are not to be touched, nobody digs in the dry sand, vehicles, bicycles and horses are banned, and torches and lights at night are prohibited. Sekania, the densest nesting beach, is closed to the public altogether;

– With a dog. The sources differ, one banning dogs on the nesting beaches and another allowing them on a lead. We advise leaving the dog at the villa on the days you visit the bay.

For a private client the practical result is simple. A boat day in the bay is booked with an operator that knows the zones, an evening on the Laganas beaches ends at sunset, and a villa party that wants to see turtles goes with a licensed boat rather than on its own. The aircraft has its own part in the arrangement, because it is the airport curfew that keeps the beaches dark.

Kefalonia and Ithaca by sea

Kefalonia lies about 15 km to the north of Zakynthos, and the two islands are a natural pair. From late May to late September a car ferry runs from Agios Nikolaos, in the north of Zakynthos, to Pessada in the south of Kefalonia, in about 1 hour 45 minutes, with up to seven crossings a week. Pessada is about 12 km from Argostoli. Outside the summer the route is longer: the year-round way is a boat from Zakynthos Town to Kyllini on the mainland, about 1 hour 15 minutes, and then another from Kyllini to Poros on Kefalonia, about an hour, so that the whole journey is three to four hours.

Ithaca, the island of Odysseus, is another half-day beyond. Homer's Ithaca is generally identified with this island of about 96 square kilometres, whose capital Vathy sits on a deep natural harbour, with Kioni and Frikes on the north-east coast. There is a foot-passenger boat from Zakynthos, but the sources disagree on how often it runs and how long it takes, and the usual way is through Kefalonia, from Sami, on a ferry of 20 to 30 minutes. We therefore treat Ithaca as a day by yacht, by helicopter or from a base on Kefalonia, and not as an excursion from a Zakynthos hotel. A client whose real destination is Kefalonia or Ithaca should look at flying into Kefalonia airport directly: from Biggin Hill the same Phenom costs about £350 less to Kefalonia than to Zakynthos.

Flying to Zakynthos with a dog or a cat

Greece asks for a good deal of paperwork, and three hours is long enough for a dog to settle and sleep. The animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold. The detail that goes wrong is the date on the health certificate, which is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU, and the second detail is the point at which the animal is allowed to arrive. On that second point Zakynthos needs a written answer.

private flight with animals

What Greece asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian, valid for ten days for entry to the EU and valid for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a designated point of entry. The island entry points on the Greek foreign ministry's list include Corfu, Kos, Rhodes, Chania, Heraklion and the port of Argostoli on Kefalonia, but Zakynthos is not named;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Zakynthos run

– The point of entry. Because Zakynthos does not appear on the official list of entry points for animals from outside the EU, we confirm in writing whether the animal may arrive at the island. If not, the plan is a first landing at Athens or at another approved point, and a short onward flight or a boat. Some Greek airports are not approved for pets at all;

– The vet at the end. Britain asks for the tapeworm treatment on the way home, so the appointment has to be booked on the island towards the end of the stay, and a flight that moves by a day can push the 24 to 120 hour window out of reach. A villa at Keri adds a long drive to the visit, so we ask for the vet's address and opening hours when the villa is chosen;

– The beaches and the boats. The nesting beaches of Laganas are no place for a dog, a boat to Navagio is a day of sun on a deck, and a helicopter operator will count the animal in the payload. Settle every one of these before the quote.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the airport of entry and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Zakynthos calendar: a turtle summer and a quiet winter

Zakynthos works from May to October. In the other months the island is green, wet and quiet, the ferry between the two islands does not run, and the airport publishes short daily operating windows. Choosing the week matters more than choosing the aircraft, because the turtle season, the slot season and the swimming season all fall in the same months.

November to March
The quiet months. Air temperatures in the mid teens, the sea at 15 to 17 degrees and a lot of rain. Many seasonal hotels and tavernas close, and the direct ferry to Kefalonia does not run. The carnival fills Zakynthos Town in the weeks before Lent, usually in February or March, and on 17 December the town carries the icon of Saint Dionysios in a litany. Slots are no issue and prices are at their lowest
April
The season opens. Highs around 19 or 20 degrees, a sea of about 16 and a few rainy days. The island is green and almost empty, and a villa can be found for a fraction of the August price. Aircraft are easy to book
May
Highs near 25 degrees and a sea of about 19, brisk for swimming. The loggerheads begin to lay their eggs at night and the beach rules of the marine park start to matter. The ferry to Kefalonia starts running towards the end of the month. A good month for the sights, the cliffs and a quiet villa
June
Highs of about 30 degrees and a sea of 22 or 23. Summer slots apply and the airport fills with charter traffic. The boats to Navagio and the Blue Caves run in full, and the long evenings make a late lunch on the harbour easy
July
Hot, with highs of 32 or 33 degrees and a sea around 25. The first hatchlings emerge on the Laganas beaches in the middle of the month and the dance festival is held at the open-air theatre of Zakynthos Town. The family villa weeks begin, parking tightens and a Friday is the busiest day at the airport
August
The peak of the year, with the hottest weather and a sea of about 26 degrees. On 15 August the Dormition of the Virgin is celebrated at the monastery of Anafonitria, and on 24 August the town marks the feast of Saint Dionysios with litanies of the icon. Slots, handlers and villas are booked well ahead
September
The best month for value: the sea is at its warmest, close to 25 degrees, the crowds thin after the school holidays and aircraft and slots are easier to find. On 8 September the Birth of the Virgin is celebrated at the Panagia Spiliotissa festival. The last ferry crossings to Kefalonia run at the end of the month
October
Highs of about 24 degrees, a sea of 23 and more rain. The feast of Agios Dimitrios is kept at Volimes on 26 October. The summer slot regime ends with the month, the direct ferry to Kefalonia has stopped and the airport moves to its short winter windows, so the schedule is worth confirming early

Why a July weekend costs more

Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Zakynthos is reachable from every part of it. What gets tight is the airport itself: private flights share the slots and the apron with a heavy programme of holiday charters, parking is limited, and the night restriction squeezes the working day into the hours between early morning and the evening. Because the aircraft often cannot stay, a weekend is usually two separate flights for the operator, one in and one out, with the aircraft parked on another island or on the mainland in between, and that is paid for. A booking made two weeks before an August weekend can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Athens or Italy at a higher price. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. In winter the slot pressure disappears and a charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Zakynthos price down

  • Move the dates out of July and August where you can. September is warm, the sea is at its best and the airport is far easier to book;
  • Compare the airports. On the same Phenom from Biggin Hill, Kefalonia comes out about £350 lower than Zakynthos, while Athens is about £1,100 higher. Kefalonia is the only real saving, and you then take a ferry, so let the place you are sleeping decide;
  • Choose a midweek day when you can. Weekends carry the changeover traffic of the holiday weeks, and a Tuesday or Wednesday arrival is likelier to meet an easier slot.

Types of flights

Zakynthos produces a different mix from the cities we cover, because people go there for the sea, the family and the scenery, not for meetings. Almost everything is leisure, and most of it is planned months ahead.

  • Family villa weeks at Tsilivi, Alykes or on the south coast, flown out on a Friday or Saturday and back a week or a fortnight later, usually with children and a large amount of luggage;
  • Boat days built around Navagio, the Blue Caves and the turtle bay, with a skipper booked in advance;
  • Two-island weeks, landing at Zakynthos and leaving from Kefalonia, or the other way round, with the ferry between them in summer;
  • Yacht and sailing trips, joining a boat in Zakynthos Town or in the Ionian chain to the north;
  • Weddings and celebrations in a villa or on a terrace above the sea, where a group of guests must arrive in the same afternoon;
  • Quiet breaks in the shoulder months for walking, the cliffs of Keri and the old town without the crowd.

A same-day return does not work. The sector alone is over three hours each way, the aircraft often cannot wait on the apron in the busy months, and the airport does not accept night movements, so a day trip is squeezed between the morning and the evening. A short stay is therefore planned as two separate one-way flights, and we quote it that way, so the figure you see is the one you pay.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Zakynthos route the aircraft that cannot stay on the apron produce a steady supply of them, and it helps to know where they come from.

Where Zakynthos empty legs come from

– Every drop-and-go. An aircraft that has brought a family to the island leaves empty to park elsewhere, and the leg that follows to Athens, Italy or the Turkish coast is the one most often offered;

– The start and the end of the season. In April and May and again in October operators move aircraft between Britain and the Ionian, and a one-way repositioning flight can appear on either side of a charter week;

– The weekend changeover. Holiday weeks tend to start and end on the same days, and a family that flies out and another that flies home on the same day produce outbound legs to London and the continent.

Because the corridor is far thinner in winter than in the peak, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Zakynthos match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

On Zakynthos a helicopter competes with a boat and a car for the same job, which is the last stretch between a runway and somewhere that has none. The distances are short and the roads are winding, so a helicopter wins when the sea is rough, the time is worth more than the fare, or the place has no road at all.

Airport to the Navagio cliffs
15 nautical miles to the north-west coast, against 40 to 50 minutes by road from Zakynthos Town to the viewpoint
about 15 minutes
Zakynthos to Kefalonia
30 nautical miles across the strait to Kefalonia airport, against 1 hour 45 minutes by the summer ferry from Agios Nikolaos
about 25 minutes
Zakynthos to Ithaca
39 nautical miles to Vathy, the island of Odysseus, a trip that by sea needs a change through Kefalonia
about 30 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, and on Zakynthos much of the coast belongs to protected areas. The sites are agreed before the quote is written, not after it;

– Weight and weather set the schedule. The payload of a private charter is limited, and a windy day can stop a helicopter when the jet lands without trouble, so an island transfer needs a boat or a car alternative planned into the same day;

– Book early. In the peak months helicopter seats can sell out, and the operator needs the booking days ahead, not hours.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for island and coastal work, the wider H130 for villa and harbour transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Zakynthos charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

FAMILY WEEK · THE SLOT AND THE LUGGAGE

Seven people for a week at Tsilivi

Southampton - Zakynthos, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 20 min · 7 pax

Two adults, a grandmother and four children, with pushchairs and a case of beach gear. The slot request went in with the first message, the aircraft dropped the party and flew on to park elsewhere, and a driver met them at the handler for the drive of about fifteen minutes to the villa. The handling charges were shown as their own lines in the quote.

A BOAT DAY · NAVAGIO FROM THE WATER

A couple and friends for four days

Farnborough - Zakynthos, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 10 min · 4 pax

They wanted the cliffs, the Blue Caves and a quiet table in the town. The beach was closed to landing, so the boat from Porto Vromi held its place off the shore, and the viewpoint above Anafonitria gave the picture the group had come for. The transfer from the airport to the harbour hotel took a quarter of an hour.

TWO ISLANDS · LANDING AT ONE, LEAVING FROM THE OTHER

Six friends and a week between Zakynthos and Kefalonia

London Luton - Zakynthos, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 20 min · 6 pax

The jet landed at Zakynthos and the group took the summer ferry from Agios Nikolaos to Pessada in the middle of the week. The aircraft flew on empty to Kefalonia and brought them home from there, which is allowed, whereas carrying them between the two Greek fields would not have been. The plan was one quote with two slots.

A JUNE WEEK · A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a labrador on the island

Southampton - Zakynthos, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 10 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and because Zakynthos is not on the Greek list of island entry points we confirmed the arrival point in writing before the flight. The vet appointment for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home, and the villa accepted the dog. The Laganas beaches were left to the turtles.

A SEPTEMBER WEEK · THE QUIET MONTH

A family, once the school holidays are over

Farnborough - Zakynthos, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 10 min · 4 pax

They moved the dates from August to the second week of September and found aircraft easier to get, a warmer sea and a lower figure. The slot was still required, but the pressure was gone and the departure was timed for the late afternoon, well before the night restriction.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING WEST

A jet already going your way

Zakynthos - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 3 h 10 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a family in for the week and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday afternoon departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Zakynthos

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Zakynthos?

About 3 hours 10 minutes from the London fields in a Phenom or a similar light jet, covering roughly 1,249 to 1,281 nautical miles. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about 3 hours 30 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 3 hours 45 minutes. Greece is two hours ahead of Britain, so an eight o'clock departure lands shortly after one o'clock local time, and the arrival has to fall before the airport's night restriction.

2How much does a private jet to Zakynthos cost?

From about £16,250 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, £16,300 from London City, and £16,550 from Farnborough and £16,600 from Luton. A midsize cabin runs £21,550 to £22,250 from the Midlands and the north, and from Scotland allow £29,850 to £30,300. July, August and the school-holiday weekends can price above these figures, and handling at the airport is quoted as its own line.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Zakynthos?

Zakynthos International Airport "Dionysios Solomos" (ZTH / LGZA) is the only airport on the island, about 4 km from Zakynthos Town, with one runway of 2,228 m. It is slot-coordinated in summer, handling is mandatory and it takes no night movements. Kefalonia (EFL / LGKF) is 30 nautical miles away across the strait and is cheaper by about £350 from Biggin Hill on the same light jet, which makes sense when the trip is really to Kefalonia or Ithaca.

4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Zakynthos?

Britain is outside the EU and Schengen and Greece is inside both, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for three months beyond departure. A British operator needs a permit from the Greek civil aviation authority for charter flights and cannot carry passengers between two Greek airports. The operator and our team handle the aircraft paperwork, including the permits and the slot.

5Can I visit Navagio and the turtle beaches of Laganas?

Navagio can be seen but landing on its beach has been banned, and boats hold position about 50 m offshore; the clifftop viewpoint above Anafonitria is the alternative, and we check the status for your dates. In Laganas Bay the marine park sets the rules: boats are barred from Zone A, limited to 6 knots in Zones B and C, the nesting beaches are closed between sunset and 7 in the morning, and Sekania is closed to the public. The Navagio cliffs are about 15 minutes by helicopter and 40 to 50 minutes by road from Zakynthos Town.

6Can I take my dog to Zakynthos on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Greece asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry and for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport cannot be used. Zakynthos is not named on the Greek foreign ministry's list of island entry points, so we confirm in writing whether the dog may arrive at the island or must land elsewhere first. A dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
