Private jet charter in Rovaniemi

A light jet needs a little over three hours to carry a family from a London airfield to the Arctic Circle, and the clocks on the ground read two hours ahead of Britain's. The reason for going decides everything else: Santa Claus Village in the weeks before Christmas, the northern lights from a glass-roofed room, a summer of light that never quite ends, or a meeting in the capital of Finnish Lapland. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever of those it is. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Rovaniemi has one airport, a 3,002 m runway and no real alternative within easy reach, so the decisions that matter are the season, the size of the cabin and how far into Lapland you are going.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Rovaniemi depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Rovaniemi?

A Phenom 300E out of Luton needs 3 hours 5 minutes, a Citation CJ3+ from Biggin Hill about 20 minutes longer, and a Phenom from Edinburgh or Newcastle about 20 minutes less, because the northern fields are the closer ones: Edinburgh is only 1,082 nautical miles from Rovaniemi against 1,245 from Biggin Hill. Put your watch two hours forward on arrival, since Finland keeps Eastern European time and changes its clocks on the same dates as Britain. The sectors in the table run from 1,082 to 1,310 nautical miles, which is long for a light jet and routine for a midsize one.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Luton at seven in the morning and the Phenom is on the ground at Rovaniemi a few minutes after midday, local time. The terminal stands about 8 km from the city centre and about 3 km from Santa Claus Village, so a family can be across the Arctic Circle line in time for a late lunch, with a transfer that typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. In midwinter the sun barely rises and the short day fades to blue twilight, which is the argument for the early departure: it is what leaves daylight for the Village. Count the drive to the British airfield and the quick processing at both ends, and central London to the Arctic Circle comes to roughly five hours.

Light jet or midsize on a sector of three hours and more

– Up to four people with ordinary cabin bags fit a light jet, and three hours is a tolerable sit. In midwinter the bags are not ordinary: snowsuits, boots, thermal layers and a pushchair fill the hold faster than the seats fill up;

– From five people, or with small children who need room to move, ski kit or a dog, a midsize cabin is the sensible quote, and we put it beside the light-jet figure so both numbers are in front of you;

– A large jet makes sense for a party of ten or more, for one aircraft that stays with you from Rovaniemi to Kittilä or Ivalo and back, or when Lapland is only one leg of a longer itinerary.

Lapland from the air: when a turboprop beats the road

Kittilä lies 75 nautical miles from Rovaniemi, about 40 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, and its airport is 15 km from the centre of Levi, which is itself about 170 km from Rovaniemi by road. Ivalo is 133 nautical miles away, about 50 minutes by turboprop, and stands 25 km north of Saariselkä. For a ski week at Levi or Ylläs the sensible plan is usually to fly the jet from Britain straight to Kittilä and leave Rovaniemi out altogether; the case for Rovaniemi is Santa, the Arctic Circle and the city itself. The two combine easily: land at Rovaniemi for Christmas in the Village, then take a turboprop on to the fells for the week.

Before you accept a Lapland onward quote

– Which airport, and on which dates. Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo are separate airports with their own hours and their own winter pressures, and Finavia introduced slot coordination for airline schedules at Rovaniemi and Kittilä to spread the winter peaks. A quote that ignores the date of travel is a quote that will change;

– Whether the legs are one booking. Rovaniemi, Kittilä and a return to Rovaniemi arranged as one trip costs less than three separate charters, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of going home between stops;

– What the light does. In midwinter the sun barely rises, and a late-afternoon turboprop leg to a small field depends on that field's opening hours, so we ask for them in writing before the quote is final.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Rovaniemi:

Light jets, for a short and light party

Over three hours is a long sit in a light cabin, so these suit three or four people with modest bags. Range is no problem for Rovaniemi, which means the money goes on the hour and not on capability you will not use.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for the family and the winter luggage

Snowsuits, boots, a pushchair and a week of thermal layers are what usually move a booking out of the light-jet class into a cabin where the party can stand up and spread out.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a family party of ten, a delegation travelling as one group, or an aircraft that stays with you from Rovaniemi to Kittilä and back, and for trips that carry on to the Gulf or beyond.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops inside Lapland: Kittilä is about 40 minutes in the air, Ivalo about 50 minutes and Tromsø about 1 h 15 min, and on distances like these a turboprop saves a lot against a jet.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: a lodge by a frozen lake, a hop to the wildlife park at Ranua, or a lawn with no runway. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Rovaniemi sits at the far north of the European fleet, so a jet is rarely based within an hour of the airport; aircraft more often come from Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo or Britain, and the positioning is part of the price. The weeks before Christmas are when booking early matters most.

Business aviation airports in Rovaniemi

One airport does the work. The others on this list matter because the trip is really to another part of Lapland, because a quote names them, or because winter weather makes a diversion plan part of the booking.

Airport What it gives you
Rovaniemi
RVN / EFRO
The only airport for Rovaniemi itself. It lies 8.2 km (4.4 nm) north-east of the city and has a single asphalt runway, 03/21, of 3,002 by 60 metres, a CAT II approach to runway 21 and a tower that works round the clock. Finavia runs it and the Finnish Air Force shares the runway. Visiting aircraft can ask for hangar space and de-icing is available, but there are no repair facilities for visiting aircraft, so a serious technical fault means the jet is repaired elsewhere
Kittilä
KTT / EFKT
The airport for Levi and Ylläs, 15 km from the centre of Levi, with an asphalt runway, 16/34, of 2,500 m. Schedule slot coordination applies to airline traffic there in winter, as at Rovaniemi. It is about 133 km north-north-west of Rovaniemi in a straight line, while Levi is about 170 km from Rovaniemi by road. Land here and not at Rovaniemi when a ski week at Levi or Ylläs is the trip
Ivalo
IVL / EFIV
The airport for the far north, serving Saariselkä and Inari, 11 km south-west of Ivalo and 25 km north of Saariselkä. The asphalt runway, 04/22, is 2,499 m long. At 133 nautical miles from Rovaniemi it is a turboprop sector of about 50 minutes, and the usual choice when the northern fells or the Inari area are the destination
Kemi-Tornio
KEM / EFKE
A regional field 6 km north of Kemi and 18 km east of Tornio, with an asphalt runway, 18/36, of 2,503 m and scheduled Finnair flights to Helsinki. It lies about 104 km south-west of Rovaniemi in a straight line. Not a destination in itself: it is one of the diversion options we agree with the operator before a winter flight, together with Oulu
Helsinki-Vantaa
HEL / EFHK
The connection to the rest of Finland, 391 nautical miles south of Rovaniemi. Finavia runs a private business and VIP terminal on the southern part of the apron beside the main terminal, open 24 hours, with customs, immigration and security on site. It makes sense when a party joins the trip from a scheduled flight or when the itinerary includes Helsinki before Lapland

Four points settle most Rovaniemi arrivals:

Choose the handler

Handling at Rovaniemi is not compulsory, and the airport data lists Airpro, which operates from the field, and FCG OPS as handling agents; flight-support companies also offer ramp services and fuel arrangements. Service and pricing vary, so we ask the operator which one it prefers and name the handler in writing, because a driver told only airport may wait at the wrong door.

Hours, notice and fuel

The tower works round the clock, but the rest of the airport keeps hours. Customs and immigration are covered within the airport's operating hours and need four hours' notice outside them. Jet A-1 is listed for about 06:00 to 22:00 local time, and de-icing is provided at standard hours with other times on 24 hours' notice. A late arrival therefore needs fuel and de-icing agreed in advance. No curfew is on file, and civil aircraft arriving at night normally land on runway 21.

Border and passport

Finland is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border on arrival. Rovaniemi is on Finland's list of border crossing points for aircraft arriving from outside the EU, and the operator notifies the border guard and customs, normally through the flight plan. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for at least three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor is registered with a photograph and fingerprints.

Winter, closures and the car

January is the coldest month, with a daily mean of about minus 10 degrees Celsius, and snow lies for about 175 days a year. The approach to runway 21 is CAT II, but fog and snow still delay flights, so we ask the operator to name a diversion airport. Hangar space for visiting aircraft is available on request and worth asking for if the jet waits several days. Give the car company the handler and the hotel as well as the flight.

business aviation

Border, passport and the way home

Because Finland is inside Schengen, the first landing is where the formalities happen, and a hop on to Kittilä or Ivalo is a domestic flight with no further border check. Customs and immigration at Rovaniemi work within the airport's hours, with four hours' notice outside them, and the passenger details go to the border guard and customs before departure. Bring passports that are in date, declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty, and leave the meat and milk products at home, since the usual EU limits on them apply to what you carry in. The way home runs the other way. Britain treats the aircraft as arriving from abroad, so a General Aviation Report is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and passengers pass the border at the British airfield. Visitors who need no visa for Britain still need an Electronic Travel Authorisation unless they are British or Irish citizens, and we file the paperwork on our side.

From the apron to the Arctic Circle

Rovaniemi looks young for a reason. About nine tenths of its buildings were destroyed in the Lapland War, at the end of the Second World War, and Alvar Aalto had a hand in the rebuilding, which gave the street plan the outline of a reindeer's head. The centre stands where the Kemijoki meets the Ounasjoki, about 6 km south of the Arctic Circle, with the Arktikum science museum on the river bank and the Ounasvaara hill, and its small ski centre, across the water. Everything that draws families north, Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the glass-roofed hotels, lies out towards the airport.

Rovaniemi Airport to Santa Claus Village
about 3 km, the shortest transfer on this page and the reason the Village comes first on most family itineraries
typically 5 to 10 minutes by car
Rovaniemi Airport to the city centre
8.2 km, so a single airport serves both the city and the Arctic Circle
typically 10 to 15 minutes by car
Santa Claus Village to the city centre
local bus number 8 runs all year between the two
about 8 km
The city centre to Ounasvaara
5 lifts and 11 slopes, with a vertical drop of about 135 m, so a family hill and not a reason to fly in for skiing alone
about 3.3 km
Rovaniemi to Ranua Wildlife Park
80 km from the city, with its polar bears, open all year
about an hour by road
Rovaniemi to Levi
about 170 km by road, or Kittilä by turboprop and 15 km on from there
about 40 minutes by air

Where the northern-lights rooms are

Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle stand in Santa Claus Village, about 600 m from its centre and 2 to 4 km from the airport, with glass roofs, an aurora alarm for guests and a private sauna in some of the igloos. The Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is a ten-minute drive from the city centre and a few kilometres from the airport: hillside pods in Finnish wood, each with a north-facing floor-to-ceiling window. Both fill first for the Christmas weeks, so we ask for rooms before the aircraft is confirmed.

Flying to Rovaniemi with a dog or a cat

Finland asks a little more of a dog than most of its neighbours, and the extra step has a clock on it. The flight itself is the easy part: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of three hours most simply sleep. What matters is that every date on the paperwork falls inside its window.

private flight with animals

What Finland, as an EU country, asks for:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination, never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, valid for ten days for entry to the EU and for the return to Britain as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport is not accepted for entry to the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller. The Finnish Food Authority lists Helsinki-Vantaa as the only airport where a pet arriving from outside the EU can be presented to customs, and Rovaniemi is not on that list, so we confirm in writing that the rule applies to your private flight, plan the first landing at Helsinki, clear the animal there, and fly on to Rovaniemi as a domestic leg;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment on the way in, which not every EU country asks for: praziquantel given by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Finland and recorded on the certificate. The Finnish authority gives a tighter limit for some journeys from outside the EU, so we check the window for your dates. Cats are exempt;
  • For dogs returning to Britain directly from Finland, no tapeworm treatment is needed; it is required, from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival and recorded with product, date and time, only if the dog has been in another country or the routing includes one, and we confirm that in writing.

What catches owners out on the Rovaniemi run

– The Helsinki stop is not optional for the animal. It adds a leg and a landing to the quote, and about 1 h 15 min of flying in a midsize jet on to Rovaniemi, but without it the entry-point rule may not be met. We price the two legs as one trip and confirm the entry point with the handler in writing;

– One treatment on a short trip. It is given at home before you leave, so the vet appointment is part of the plan from the start. Count back from the arrival in Finland, because the window is 24 to 120 hours, and the direct flight home needs none;

– The Christmas calendar. Clinics keep short hours over the holiday, and the 24 to 120 hour window has to be met before the flight out, so ask your vet in good time;

– The room. Not every glass igloo, lodge or treehouse takes dogs, and a hotel has to agree before the booking, as does any helicopter operator for an onward transfer.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the flight home, we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

The Rovaniemi calendar: a year ruled by light

Rovaniemi runs on light more than on events. Winter brings snow, the aurora and Christmas, early summer brings a sun that does not set, and between them lie quieter weeks that are good value. Knowing which season you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

Late Nov to mid-Jan
Christmas season. The charter season for British and other European travellers typically runs from late November to mid-January, and the Village keeps longer hours from late November into early January. Around 23 December the Village usually stages Santa Claus is On His Way, with live music, and SantaPark, the underground Christmas park, offers festive dinners over Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve; we check the programme for your dates. Families with small children, pushchairs and a great deal of luggage
Midwinter
The sun barely rises, the day fades to blue twilight and the January daily mean is about minus 10 degrees Celsius, with snow lying for roughly 175 days a year. De-icing, hangar space and a departure timed for daylight matter more here than the choice of aircraft
Late Aug to early Apr
Northern lights. The aurora can appear from late August to early April and is never guaranteed. Couples and small groups book two or three nights around a glass-roofed room, such as the igloos in the Village or the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel, and clear nights decide the rest
Nov to April
Ounasvaara ski season, from November into April, with 11 slopes and 5 lifts about 3 km from the centre. It is a hill for families and beginners, with a vertical drop of about 135 m. Serious skiing means Levi or Ylläs, and a flight to Kittilä
Winter weekends
Snowmobile races, rally competitions and reindeer races are held in winter, and the Arctic Lapland Rally is among the city's best-known events. Dates vary from year to year, so we check the programme before quoting. Enthusiasts and spectators, mostly in small groups
Early June to early July
Midnight sun. The sun stays above the horizon from early June until early July, and the solstice and Midsummer weekend fall in the middle of it. Lake fishing, canoeing and hiking replace the snow, and the bright nights run from late May into August. Rooms and aircraft are easier to find than at Christmas
September
Autumn colours are at their best, temperatures run from about 5 to 15 degrees Celsius and the first northern lights of the season return. A calm month for small business and university visits, and for travellers who want Lapland without the crowds
All year
Santa receives visitors every day of the year in the Village, Ranua Wildlife Park is open all year, and Husky Park runs for most of the year. Rovaniemi does not close between seasons, which is why the calendar above is about crowds more than about opening times

Why the Christmas weeks cost more

Not only the flying. The same apron, the same de-icing crews and the same hangars serve every charter that lands in those weeks, and Finavia brought in slot coordination for airline schedules at Rovaniemi to spread the winter peaks. Fuel is sold only during set hours and customs works within the airport's hours. A booking made a fortnight before Christmas can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft positioned from Helsinki or Stockholm; the same booking made in the early autumn is simpler and cheaper. Outside the Christmas weeks a charter to Rovaniemi can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Rovaniemi price down

  • Move the dates away from 20 to 26 December. The first week of December and the first week of January are calmer, and the shoulder months of September and the spring are calmer still;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Helsinki, Stockholm or Oslo needs less positioning than one flown out from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a visible slice of the invoice;
  • Count the bags before the seats. Four people with four bags do not need a midsize jet, and the money saved pays for the car, the igloo and the husky ride.

Types of flights

Rovaniemi produces a mix of its own, because the city is a family destination in December, a lights and fishing destination for the rest of the year and the regional capital all through it.

  • Family Christmas trips to Santa Claus Village and SantaPark, usually three to five nights, with winter clothes taking most of the hold;
  • Northern-lights breaks between late August and April, built around a glass-roofed room and often a reindeer or husky outing in the Village;
  • Winter-sports weeks that start at Rovaniemi and end at Levi, Ylläs or Saariselkä, with a turboprop or a second jet for the leg north;
  • Midnight-sun trips in June, with fishing, canoeing and hiking as the main draw;
  • Business and university visits to the Lapland capital, with a small team, fixed dates and a request for a quiet passage through the terminal.

A same-day Santa trip sits at the edge of what is sensible. Leaving Luton at seven puts you on the ground just after midday local time, and an early afternoon departure for home would leave only a couple of hours in a Village that is dark by teatime in midwinter. Most families take two or three nights, and on this route we quote the aircraft either waiting or going home and returning, so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Rovaniemi route they follow the Christmas calendar more than the working week, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Rovaniemi empty legs come from

– Christmas family trips. An aircraft brings a party north and returns empty, or flies north empty to collect them on the day they come home, so the legs south and north both turn up in the weeks around the holiday;

– Winter rotation inside Lapland. Operators move aircraft between Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo through the season, and the short turboprop legs between them can be cheap;

– Aurora and midnight-sun weekends. Small parties arrive on a Friday and the aircraft goes home empty, which produces an outbound leg on the Friday or the Saturday.

Because the corridor to Lapland is much thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Rovaniemi match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In Rovaniemi a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The Village is about 3 km from the terminal, which a car covers in minutes. The places where rotary flight changes the journey are the lodges away from the road, the wildlife park at Ranua and the long run north to the fells.

Rovaniemi to Ranua Wildlife Park and back
80 km from the city, against about an hour each way by road
typically 30 minutes each way
Rovaniemi to Kittilä, for Levi and Ylläs
75 nm, against a road journey of about 170 km to Levi
about 45 minutes
Rovaniemi to Ivalo, for Saariselkä
133 nm to the airport 25 km from the fells
about 1 h 15 min
A scenic loop over the Arctic Circle and the Kemijoki
the river junction, the Ounasvaara hill and the Village from the air
typically 30 minutes
A lodge or a frozen lake
a landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– Rotary flight is limited by where it may set down. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a lodge garden or a lake shore before the quote is written;

– Arctic weather sets the schedule. Snow, low cloud and the short winter day can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– For the Christmas weeks, book the helicopter together with the jet, and expect little spare rotary capacity if you ask late.

The machines usually offered for this kind of work are the Airbus H125 for short scenic flights, the wider H130 for lodge and lakeside transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted, and the H155 for larger parties. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Rovaniemi charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS · THE LUGGAGE BOOKED THE CABIN

Five people, a pushchair and four nights in December

London Luton - Rovaniemi, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 10 min · 5 pax

The seats said a light jet. The snowsuits, boots and the pushchair said otherwise, so the quote moved up a class and the family stood up for most of the flight. The handler was named a week ahead, the car was waiting at the terminal and the Village was minutes from the apron. The igloo had been booked before the aircraft.

AURORA BREAK · TWO COUPLES

Three nights under a glass roof in September

Manchester - Rovaniemi, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 05 min · 4 pax

A shoulder-season trip with spare rooms and a spare aircraft. The clients gave a four-day window instead of a date, the departure moved by a day to match a clear forecast and the price came in well below the Christmas weeks. Nobody can promise the lights, and we did not.

SKI WEEK · THE OTHER AIRPORT WON

A group for Levi who asked for Rovaniemi

Glasgow - Kittilä, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 50 min · 6 pax

They asked for Rovaniemi because it is the name everyone knows. Levi is about 170 km from there by road and 15 km from Kittilä, so the same aircraft flew a few minutes further and the transfer fell from a long drive to a short one. The only cost was asking where the hotel was before quoting.

MIDNIGHT SUN · FISHING AND HIKING

A small group in the bright nights of June

Southampton - Rovaniemi, Citation XLS+, about 3 h 20 min · 6 pax

A summer trip with no snow, no de-icing and plenty of room on the apron. The group fished, hiked and walked about at midnight in full daylight, and the aircraft stayed at Rovaniemi for the four days, which was cheaper than sending it home and bringing it back.

CHRISTMAS · A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a spaniel for a December break

Bristol - Helsinki - Rovaniemi, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 55 min and about 1 h 15 min · 4 pax + dog

The dog had to be cleared at Helsinki-Vantaa, so the trip was quoted as two legs. The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, the tapeworm treatment had to fall inside its window before the flight out, and the direct flight home needed none. We booked the vet visit, the aircraft and a hotel that took the dog in one exchange of messages, with the dates set so that the vet visit did not fall on a holiday.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY SOUTH

A jet already going your way

Rovaniemi - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 3 h 05 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a family north for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Rovaniemi

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Rovaniemi?

About 3 hours 5 minutes from Luton in a Phenom 300E, and around 3 hours 25 minutes from Biggin Hill in a Citation CJ3+, covering roughly 1,223 to 1,245 nautical miles. From Edinburgh, Newcastle or Glasgow allow between 2 hours 45 minutes and 2 hours 50 minutes in a Phenom, and from Manchester about 3 hours 5 minutes in a Citation XLS+. Finland is two hours ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure from Luton lands a few minutes after midday local time.

2How much does a private jet to Rovaniemi cost?

From about £15,950 one way on a light jet out of Luton, and £16,250 from Biggin Hill. A midsize cabin runs from £19,250 out of Manchester to £20,900 out of Bristol, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow a Phenom costs £14,300 to £14,650. The weeks around Christmas and the New Year price above these figures.

3Which Rovaniemi airport should a private jet use?

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN / EFRO) for almost every trip. It is 8.2 km from the city and about 3 km from Santa Claus Village, with a single 3,002 m runway, a tower open round the clock and customs within the airport's hours, with four hours' notice outside them. Kittilä (KTT / EFKT) is the airport for Levi and Ylläs, Ivalo (IVL / EFIV) is for Saariselkä and Inari, and Kemi-Tornio (KEM / EFKE) is a diversion option.

4When should I book a private jet to Rovaniemi?

Outside the peak a day or two is usually enough. For the Christmas season, which typically runs from late November to mid-January, book as soon as the dates are settled, because the apron, the de-icing crews and the hangars serve every charter landing in those weeks. A late booking tends to pay more for an aircraft positioned from Helsinki or Stockholm.

5Can I fly on from Rovaniemi to Levi, Ylläs or Saariselkä?

Yes. Kittilä, for Levi and Ylläs, is about 40 minutes by Pilatus PC-12 and Ivalo, for Saariselkä, about 50 minutes. Levi is about 170 km from Rovaniemi by road, so for a ski week we often fly the jet straight to Kittilä and leave Rovaniemi out. A helicopter to Kittilä takes about 45 minutes, on a site agreed in advance.

6Can I take my dog to Rovaniemi on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Finland asks for a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of arrival. The Finnish Food Authority lists Helsinki-Vantaa as the only airport entry point for pets arriving from outside the EU, so we plan the first landing there and confirm in writing that this applies to your flight. Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival in Finland (we confirm the window for your dates). A direct flight home from Finland to Britain needs no further treatment, only if the dog has been in another country or the routing includes one. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
