How long does it take to fly to India?
India is a genuine long-haul run from Britain, and the honest answer depends entirely on the aircraft rather than the map. A modern ultra-long-range jet reaches Delhi nonstop in about eight and a half hours and Chennai in ten. Two things that move the price more than distance does
– Where the aircraft sleeps. Long-range jets positioned in the Gulf reach Delhi or Mumbai in three to four hours, so a Dubai-based cabin can undercut a London-based one on the same itinerary even after the positioning leg is paid for. We look at both before quoting;
– The return. A foreign-registered aircraft may stay in India for a limited period, and crew duty rules mean a same-day turnaround on a nine-hour sector needs a second crew. Trips built as out-and-back within 48 hours cost noticeably more than a week-long stay where the aircraft is released and returns for you.
Departures from other European cities are quoted on request, and for itineraries that continue to Southeast Asia or the Gulf we price the whole schedule as one movement rather than a set of separate charters.

The rule that surprises almost every first-time client: no domestic legs
A foreign-registered aircraft may not pick passengers up at one place in India and set them down at another. That applies to non-scheduled and even non-revenue flights, so the jet that brought you from London cannot simply carry you on from Delhi to Mumbai. A series of such flights can be applied for through the DGCA, but the application goes in at least a month ahead. In practice we solve it the way local operators do: the long-range aircraft brings you into the country and waits or returns home, and the internal legs are flown on Indian-registered jets that we book alongside. Clients who plan a five-city tour on one aircraft are usually planning something that cannot legally happen, and it is far better to hear that at the enquiry stage.
The second piece of Indian groundwork is the permit itself. Every foreign aircraft needs landing clearance from the DGCA, issued as a reference known as the YA number, and that number goes into the flight plan: without it the plan is rejected and the aircraft does not enter Indian airspace. Alongside it sit the airport slot, parking permission and customs clearance at an airport of entry, which are separate approvals rather than parts of the same one. Military-run fields such as Agra need far longer notice than civil airports, and a departure that slips more than an hour from the approved time can require the clearance to be reissued.
How we plan the paperwork
– Permits are filed well ahead of the official minimum, because an incomplete application is rejected rather than queried and the clock restarts. Our managers confirm the exact lead time for your date and route when the aircraft is agreed;
– The whole trip goes in at once: entry point, any internal movements, and the exit. Vagueness here is the most common reason for delay;
– A foreign-registered aircraft may only remain in India for a limited period, so on longer stays we plan whether the jet waits or flies home and returns, and price both before you choose.
Beyond the eight fields above, business jets also use Jaipur, Amritsar, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Varanasi, Chandigarh, Nagpur and Leh, and helicopters reach a great deal more. If your destination is not on the list, ask: the answer is usually yes, with a note about which airport handles the customs formalities.
Flying to India with a dog or a cat
India is the most demanding destination on our site for anyone travelling with an animal, and the difficulty sits at both ends of the journey. Neither part is impossible, but both need months rather than weeks, so this is the section to read before the dates are fixed.
The fact that decides the whole trip
India is not on the list of countries from which a pet may re-enter Great Britain under the ordinary rules. Coming home normally means a rabies antibody blood test taken at least thirty days after vaccination, and then a three-month wait before the animal may enter Britain. There is a way round it, and it has to be done in the right order: have the blood test carried out by your vet here, before you leave. A sample drawn in Britain stays valid for the return as long as the rabies cover never lapses, and the three-month wait does not apply. Owners who discover this rule in Delhi rather than in London are the ones whose dog spends the winter in India.
The Indian side has its own requirements, and they apply on a private flight exactly as they do on an airline:
- A No Objection Certificate from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service is required to bring a dog or cat into the country, whatever the aircraft. It is obtained from a quarantine station in advance of arrival, and the stations sit at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad;
- Two animals per owner is the maximum accepted as pets. Beyond that the movement is treated differently and needs separate clearance;
- Only dogs and cats count as pets for import purposes. Birds, reptiles and other species fall under different licensing and may involve CITES;
- Rabies vaccination well before entry, with the animal microchipped, plus the vet health certificate and core vaccinations current;
- Arrival is handled at a customs airport with a quarantine officer, which in practice means one of the six cities above rather than any field you fancy.
Leaving India again
Export from India runs through the same quarantine service, which issues the No Objection Certificate for departure after inspecting the paperwork, and a vet health certificate is needed within days of the flight. Our managers coordinate the appointment in the city you are leaving from and build it into the schedule, because the certificate window and the flight date have to line up. On the aircraft itself none of this changes the comfort: the animal travels in the cabin beside you rather than in a hold, and the nine-hour sector is spent asleep by most dogs we have carried.
Two practical notes. Summer heat on the apron is a real consideration between April and June, so we schedule early morning departures for animals in that season. And the requirements above change from time to time, so we confirm the current set in writing for your specific route before anything is booked. What to plan for
– Helicopter movements need their own permissions and landing site approvals, and in India that is a separate process from the jet clearance. Lead time is the reason we ask about onward transfers when the charter is first discussed rather than after it is booked;
– The monsoon shapes the calendar. Between June and September rotary flying in much of the country is weather-dependent, and we plan a road alternative into the same day rather than treating the helicopter as certain;
– Luggage is limited compared with the jet, so on relocations and long stays the cases usually follow by road while the passengers fly.

1How long is a private jet flight from London to India?
About 8 h 30 min to Delhi nonstop on an ultra-long-range aircraft such as a Global 6000 or G550, around 9 hours to Mumbai and close to 10 to Chennai or Bengaluru. On a large but shorter-range jet the same trip is flown with one technical stop, usually in the Gulf or Turkey, adding roughly an hour and a half.
2How much does a private jet to India cost?
From about 63,000 EUR one way London to Delhi on a long-range cabin, rising to roughly 70,000 EUR for Mumbai and 82,000 EUR for Bengaluru. From continental Europe it costs less: Vienna to Delhi starts around 54,000 EUR. The price covers the aircraft, so it is the same for four passengers or twelve.
3Can the same private jet fly me between Indian cities?
Not if it is foreign-registered. Indian rules prohibit picking passengers up at one point in the country and setting them down at another, including on non-scheduled and non-revenue flights. Internal legs are flown on Indian-registered aircraft, which we book alongside the international charter so the schedule works as one trip.
4What permits does a private jet need to land in India?
A landing clearance from the DGCA, issued as a reference number that must appear in the flight plan, plus an airport slot, parking permission and customs clearance at an airport of entry. Applications are filed well in advance, incomplete ones are rejected rather than corrected, and military-run airfields need considerably longer notice.
5Can I take my dog to India on a private jet?
Yes, in the cabin, but the planning starts months ahead. India requires a No Objection Certificate from its quarantine service, with a limit of two animals per owner. More importantly for the way home, India is unlisted for pet entry into Great Britain, so have the rabies blood test done here before you leave: a sample taken in Britain removes the three-month wait on the return.
