Private jet charter in Chile

From London, Santiago is about 6,500 nautical miles of planned track away, and that single figure decides which aircraft can fly a private jet charter to Chile without a stop. Only the ultra-long-range cabins are published with that kind of reach, so in our planning the aircraft comes first and the passenger list second. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Chile that also means a landing permit and an overflight permit filed through the handler, a slot for any call at Easter Island, and customs officers who meet the aircraft at the FBO in Santiago.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Chile depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Farnborough, a Gulfstream G650ER to Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez, nonstop, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Chile?

Mainland Chile keeps UTC-4 in winter and UTC-3 on summer time, which runs from early September to early April, except in the far south, where Magallanes stays on UTC-3 all year. Against Britain that makes Santiago five hours behind from April to August, four in September and October, and three from November to March. These are the sectors from London Farnborough, gate to gate, with a Gulfstream G550 for the north, the G650ER for Santiago and the centre, and a Global 7500 for the far south:

London to Calama
5,918 nautical miles, the Atacama and the copper mines, the shortest crossing
about 12 h 05 min
London to Santiago
6,527 nautical miles, Arturo Merino Benítez, the airport behind almost every itinerary
about 13 h 05 min
London to Concepción
6,765 nautical miles, the industrial south, past the central valley
about 13 h 30 min
London to Puerto Montt
6,991 nautical miles, the gate to the lakes and northern Patagonia
about 14 h
London to Punta Arenas
7,472 nautical miles, Patagonia, at the limit of the aircraft's range
about 14 h 55 min

Landing in the afternoon, leaving after dinner

A take-off from Farnborough at 08:00 reaches Santiago at about 16:05 local time between April and August and at about 18:05 in the northern winter, which leaves an evening for the hotel and one night's sleep before the first meeting. The return works the other way round: leave Santiago at 21:00, sleep on board, and the aircraft is on the ground in Britain between about 13:05 and 15:05 the next afternoon. Thirteen hours in the air plus checks on both sides is more than a normal two-pilot duty day, so the operator usually adds a third pilot, and the crew appears in the quote.

Calama is about 55 min shorter than Santiago, and the far south of Patagonia about 1 h 50 min longer, which is why a quote for Chile always names the airport before the aircraft. The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– Range, not comfort, picks the aircraft. A Gulfstream G550 is published at 6,750 nautical miles, and Farnborough to Santiago is 6,527 on our planned track, a margin of only 223, which a headwind can use up. So Santiago is priced on a G650ER at 7,500, the G550 is kept for the northern airports, and a Bombardier Global 6000 at 6,000 reaches none of the arrivals in the table. Punta Arenas on a Global 7500 sits at the edge of its 7,700, and Easter Island is 7,636 nautical miles from Farnborough, beyond what we quote nonstop, so it is priced as the crossing plus an internal leg;

– The arrival airport moves the price by about 20 percent. On a G550, Bristol to Calama is about £41,550 below the Farnborough to Santiago anchor on a G650ER, because the airport is nearer and the aircraft costs less by the hour. Every figure is for the trip out. A return the same week is quoted either as a second one-way sector or as a wait on the ground, whichever costs less, and parking at Santiago is seldom the problem.

Private jet flights within Chile and to its neighbours

Chile is a strip of country, and the distances inside it are long. Arica in the north to Punta Arenas in the south is 2,164 nautical miles on our track, and Easter Island is 2,107 nautical miles west of Santiago over open ocean. These are the sectors we are asked for, flown from Santiago, with the neighbouring cities that clients combine with a Chilean trip:

Two limits on the internal sectors

– Chile reports no cabotage restriction, so the long-range jet that brought you from London may carry on to Calama or Punta Arenas without a second aircraft. It rarely costs less than a mid-size jet based at Santiago, whose hourly rate is about half that of a G650ER, so we quote both and let the itinerary decide. Fields matter more than rules: Puerto Natales, the town for Torres del Paine, is listed with a runway of 1,764 metres and a displaced threshold, which is no place for a G650ER, and Easter Island needs a slot and fuel arranged ahead;

– The neighbours cross the Andes. Mendoza is a short hop over the range, Bariloche and Buenos Aires follow across the Argentine side, and Lima is almost 1,400 nautical miles north. A departure from Santiago toward Argentina over the Mendoza flight region is the one case where a slot is needed at the capital, requested 24 to 48 hours ahead and valid for ten minutes either side, and Argentina asks for an overflight permit of its own.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Chile:

Ultra-long range

The classes that cross from Britain without a stop. The G650ER is the working choice for Santiago, the G550 is enough for Calama, Antofagasta and Arica, and the Global 7500 is the only one that reaches Patagonia on the edge of its range.

Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Bombardier Global 7500 · 14 seatsfrom £8,300/h

Heavy jets

Large cabins with a range of about 4,000 to 5,000 nautical miles. They reach Chile with a planned stop on the way, and inside the country they fit the long sectors to Punta Arenas or across to Lima.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h

Super-midsize

The class behind most internal legs from Santiago. It covers Puerto Montt in under two hours and, with a Praetor 600, reaches Easter Island across the Pacific with a margin.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Light jets

For Concepción, Temuco and the hop over the Andes to Mendoza, where the sector is a few hundred nautical miles and the cabin carries four to six people.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h

Turboprops

For short regional work on the ground in Chile, not for the journey from London, which at turboprop speed would take several days of stops.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

online private jet directory

Because the long-range jet is expensive by the hour and often too large for the smaller fields, the quote for a trip around Chile usually names Santiago as the place where the second aircraft starts from, and says plainly which of the two legs each one flies.

Business aviation airports in Chile

Chile has one airport with real business aviation facilities and a string of public airports strung along a narrow country between the Andes and the Pacific. Between them the airports differ by customs status, by slot rules and by who can arrange fuel, and those matter more than the length of the runway:

Airport Ground How it operates
Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez
SCL / SCEL
about 15 km north-west of the centre, 17 km by road The airport for the crossing from Britain and the only one in Chile with FBOs. Two parallel runways of 3,800 metres, open round the clock, and no slot unless the departure heads toward Argentina. Listed FBOs are Aerocardal, Aviasur and Jetex, with a lounge, crew lounge, meeting rooms and a customs desk, and handling is compulsory. The aircraft stops at the FBO, shuts down and is then towed to its parking place
Easter Island Mataveri
IPC / SCIP
1 km south of Hanga Roa A single runway of about 3,300 metres, once an abort site for the US Space Shuttle. A slot is required for every arrival and departure, requested 24 to 48 hours ahead, and Santiago will not release a departure for the island without one. Jet fuel is listed with 48 hours of notice, and sources differ on opening hours, so hours and fuel are confirmed for the date. The nearest alternates are on the mainland, about 2,000 nautical miles away
Punta Arenas Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo
PUQ / SCCI
about 20 km north of the town The jet airport for Patagonia, with a main runway of 2,790 metres, customs and immigration listed round the clock, and the Chilean Air Force on the same site. Slots are not required and handling is not compulsory, but we use a handler to arrange fuel, landing permits and crew transport
Puerto Montt El Tepual
PMC / SCTE
serves the lake district and northern Patagonia An airport of entry in the south that takes aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 707, and a base for off-schedule operators flying tour parties. It is the better choice for the lakes and northern Patagonia than any airport on the Santiago side
Calama El Loa
CJC / SCCF
about 6 km from the town The airport for the Atacama and the copper mines, with a runway of 3,040 metres at roughly 2,300 metres above sea level. Scheduled flights are domestic, but business and tourism arrivals clear customs here. At that height a heavy departure in the afternoon heat needs far more runway than the same aircraft needs at sea level
Antofagasta Andrés Sabella Gálvez
ANF / SCFA
about 10 km north of the city A runway of 2,800 metres and an airport of entry in the north, and the nearest to the Paranal observatory, 120 km to the south. At the summer peak the aircraft may be towed to a remote parking area after the passengers get off
Arica Chacalluta
ARI / SCAR
at the Peruvian border An airport of entry in the far north and the stop that handlers suggest for northern tech stops, with 24 hours of notice. An international tech stop in Chile involves no customs, agriculture or quarantine procedures as long as nobody leaves the airside area
Temuco La Araucanía
ZCO / SCQP
about 21 km south of Temuco A runway of 2,440 metres, and the airport for Temuco and, by road, for the Pucón and Villarrica area. It is not among the airports usually used as entry points, so a customs call here is arranged as a request with 24 to 48 hours of notice
Puerto Natales Teniente Julio Gallardo
PNT / SCNT
about 7 km north-west of the town The field nearest to Torres del Paine, with a runway of 1,764 metres and a displaced threshold. It is an airport of entry only on request with 48 hours of notice, with summer hours of 09:00 to 18:00 local time, extended to 21:00 when scheduled flights are expected. A large jet lands at Punta Arenas instead

Five rules settle most Chilean trips before a quote goes out:

The permit: 24 hours

A landing permit is requested online at least 24 hours ahead and the civil aviation authority works round the clock, holidays included. The only document needed is a copy of the worldwide liability insurance. The confirmation number goes into item 18 of the flight plan, the permit is valid for 72 hours either side of the schedule, and a stay is covered for up to 90 days.

More than 19 passengers

A cabin that carries more than 19 passengers is also reviewed by the commercial department of the authority, with at least 48 hours of notice, and customs clearance at Santiago moves from the FBO to the main terminal.

Slots: two places

Santiago asks for a slot only on departures toward Argentina over the Mendoza flight region, because of congestion. Easter Island asks for one on every arrival and departure. Scheduled and air ambulance flights take priority, and private and charter flights are treated alike.

Handling away from Santiago

The FBOs are all at Santiago. Elsewhere the handler works from the main terminal and escorts passengers and crew to customs on a separate line, so for a remote airport it can be wiser to fly a handler in from the capital. Some small airfields have no lavatory service, water or fuel.

Charges

The landing fee covers parking, lighting and aeronautical charges, and a second airport fee is based on the maximum take-off weight and the time on the ground. A passenger fee of about US$30 is usually paid by the handler and billed afterwards.

Smaller airports are public ones

Outside Santiago the ramps are public, and a normally domestic airport can be turned into an airport of entry on request, with 24 to 48 hours of notice and at the discretion of the customs officers. A fuel stop on the way to Patagonia is simpler through Santiago, where an aircraft can turn round in about an hour.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Chile is outside the European Union and the Schengen area, and the entry rules for a British citizen are short. Immigration, customs and the agriculture service all meet the aircraft together, in the FBO at Santiago.

Passports
British citizens need no visa for a stay of up to 90 days. Immigration issues a white tourist card, which has to be kept and handed back on departure, and the passport must be valid beyond the day you leave
every passenger, children included
Crew
Crew named on the general declaration do not need visas, whatever their nationality. A passenger who does need a visa has to get it before arrival
listed by the operator
At the airport
clearance in the FBO takes up to 15 minutes for passengers and crew, and arrival cards for customs and agriculture are filled in by the handler in advance, so passengers only sign. Clearance on board is not offered
in the building, not on the apron
Cash and declarations
cash above US$10,000, about £7,500, is declared to customs on arrival. The joint customs and agriculture form is used, and anyone bringing animals or plant material signs a sworn declaration. Medicines are allowed in quantities that match the stay, and large amounts can be seized
declared on the form

Permits, overflight and the way home

The operator requests the landing permit and the overflight permit, and the handler checks them against the flight plan. A flight that only stops for fuel and keeps everyone airside does not go through customs, agriculture or quarantine. A flight that crosses into Argentina needs the Argentine overflight permit, requested by the operator at least 72 hours ahead, and the permits for the other countries along the track are the operator's work as well.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do.

Which airport for which part of Chile

The arrival airport follows from one address: the hotel in Las Condes, the lodge below the Torres del Paine, the camp in the Atacama. These are the usual pairings:

Santiago and the central valley
Providencia, Las Condes and the business district called Sanhattan lie east of the centre, more than 15 km from the airport, and the Maipo, Casablanca and Colchagua wine valleys are reached by road from the capital
Santiago
The coast
Viña del Mar, with Valparaíso beside it, lies about 95 km north-west of Santiago in a straight line, a road trip from the capital or a short helicopter hop
Santiago
Ski
Valle Nevado is 46 km east of Santiago and Portillo about 30 minutes by helicopter, so both are a day trip from the capital in season
Santiago
The Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama sits at 2,407 metres, 106 km south-east of Calama, with the Moon Valley, the El Tatio geysers and the Atacama salt flat around it
Calama
Mines and observatories
The Paranal observatory stands at 2,635 metres, 120 km south of Antofagasta, and the city is the airport of entry for the north
Antofagasta
Lakes and volcanoes
Puerto Montt takes the lake district and the southern coast, and Temuco is the airport for Pucón and Villarrica by road
Puerto Montt or Temuco
Patagonia
Torres del Paine is 112 km north of Puerto Natales, and a large jet lands at Punta Arenas and drives or switches aircraft
Punta Arenas
Easter Island
Rapa Nui, with its moai, lies about 2,000 nautical miles west of Santiago and every arrival needs a slot
Mataveri

Santiago, the wine valleys and Patagonia: what our clients go for

Santiago is where the business is. The city has some 6.3 million residents and the metropolitan area about 6.9 million, and the glass towers of Sanhattan carry the tallest building in South America. Chile produces almost 30 percent of the world's copper, is among the leading producers of lithium and is the second-largest producer of salmon, so a good share of our trips are boardroom days of two or three nights, with the aircraft held at Santiago or sent home empty.

Wine is the second half of the central valley. Chile is the fifth-largest wine exporter in the world. Maipo is the closest region to the capital and is known for Cabernet Sauvignon, Casablanca makes the white wines in the fog of the Pacific, Colchagua has the full-bodied reds, and Carmenère, the grape long sold as Merlot, is grown across Maipo and Colchagua. A day among the vines is a car ride from the airport.

The north is a different country. The Atacama is a cold desert with very little rain, around San Pedro the Moon Valley is a landscape of salt mines and old worker huts, and the El Tatio field has more than 80 active geysers. The Atacama salt flat covers about 3,000 square kilometres. The same clear air serves the ALMA radio telescopes on the Chajnantor plain and the four 8.2-metre telescopes of the Very Large Telescope at Paranal.

Patagonia is the reason for the longest charters. The Torres del Paine park covers 181,414 hectares, with the W trek taking three to five days and the O circuit seven to nine, and lodges and refugios along the routes. In the lake district the volcanoes above Pucón and the Termas Geométricas, a ravine of 60 hot springs on wooden boardwalks, draw clients who prefer water to altitude.

Easter Island is for people who have time. The island covers 163.6 square kilometres, has about 7,750 residents and nearly 1,000 moai, most of them carved at the crater of Rano Raraku, and the beach at Anakena is where oral tradition places the first settlement. It lies about 3,500 km from the nearest point on the mainland.

The Chilean year: when the country opens and when it empties

Chile has its summer in the months when Britain has winter, and the country stretches over so many climates that no single month suits all of it. Santiago works all year, while the south and the mountains keep a shorter calendar:

December to March
the dry summer in Santiago, with January averaging about 20 degrees, and the high season in Patagonia, where the winds at Torres del Paine peak between November and January. The grape harvest starts at the end of February
high summer
April to May
the harvest runs on with Cabernet Sauvignon in April and Carmenère sometimes in May. May is the rainiest month on Easter Island, and Santiago begins its wet season
shoulder
June to August
winter in the capital, with about 8 degrees in June and July and most of the year's rain falling between May and September. Valle Nevado and the other ski resorts are open from June, and winter nights in the Atacama fall to about minus 10
ski season
September to November
summer time returns in early September, the Fiestas Patrias fall on 18 and 19 September, and Torres del Paine reopens for the southern spring and summer
shoulder

One aircraft or two for Patagonia

There are two ways to Punta Arenas. The Global 7500 can fly it from Bristol nonstop for £252,400 one way, at the edge of its published range, with little margin for a headwind. The alternative is the crossing to Santiago on a G650ER and a Challenger 350 for the last 1,224 nautical miles, which adds up to about £230,950 as two lines, with a night in the capital between them if the party wants it. We put both on the quote and say which one is safer for the date.

The Chilean calendar: Tapati, the song festival and the ski season

The dated events are few, and each one pulls on a different airport:

Early February
Tapati Rapa Nui on Easter Island, about two weeks in which two families compete in music, sculpture, sports, body painting and fishing, and the family with the most points crowns its queen
February
The Viña del Mar song festival, six days in the third week of the month at the Quinta Vergara amphitheatre, which holds 15,000 people
March
Lollapalooza Chile in Santiago, usually three days in the month, the one big music weekend of the capital's year
June to October
The ski season at Valle Nevado, 46 km from Santiago, with the helicopter transfers listed from June to November
18 and 19 September
The Fiestas Patrias, Independence Day and Army Day, with the large fondas in Parque O'Higgins, a third day added in some years and a week-long break for many schools and workplaces
September to April
The Torres del Paine season, when the park is at its most accessible, with the winds at their strongest between November and January

Why the slot decides the Tapati dates

Easter Island asks for a slot on every arrival and departure and lists jet fuel with 48 hours of notice, and Santiago will not release a departure for the island without an approved arrival slot. A client who wants Tapati should say so at the first enquiry, because last-minute schedule changes to or from the island are known to cause complications.

Flying to Chile with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travelling with its owner can enter Chile without quarantine, and the barrier is a certificate with tight dates. The agricultural and livestock service, SAG, checks the papers and the animal at the airport of entry, and the animal is declared on the same sworn declaration that the owner signs for animals and plant material.

The one fact to read before you book

The certificate is a British one. An official vet on the Defra panel signs an export health certificate for Chile after examining the animal no more than ten days before export, and the certificate is valid for ten days. Internal and external parasite treatment must be given no more than 30 days before export, and Chilean guidance asks for at least five days between the treatment and the certificate, so the safe window is five to thirty days. A microchip or a tattoo is mandatory, and its number on the certificate must match the animal.

On the way home the rule is British. Chile is a listed country, so the animal needs a Great Britain pet health certificate, and a dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

  • A rabies vaccination given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before export, or a blood test taken between 3 and 24 months before with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml;
  • A microchip fitted before the vaccination, which the return to Britain also requires;
  • A clinical examination by the official vet within ten days before export, with the animal fit to travel;
  • No more than five animals per traveller on the way back, and more than that, or an animal travelling without its owner, is treated as a commercial consignment.

The sector is long, and the examination date drives every other date, so we build the timetable backwards from the flight and confirm in writing how the animal will be received at Santiago. Requirements for rabbits, birds, reptiles and the less usual species are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Chilean run there are few of them, because few aircraft can make the crossing, but each one is a long and valuable sector.

Where Chilean empty legs come from

– A long-range jet that flew a party out to Santiago and returns to Britain without passengers, which is the commonest leg and the one most often offered;

– The edges of the seasons, when operators often reposition aircraft after the southern summer in March and again before the ski season in June;

A client who can offer a window of several weeks has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Chilean empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (Belfast) - Chile (Arica ARI) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £67,350
Chile (Calama CJC) - UK (Bristol) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £69,250
UK (London Gatwick) - Chile (Antofagasta ANF) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £71,250
Chile (Santiago SCL) - UK (London Farnborough) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £86,700
UK (London Biggin Hill) - Chile (Santiago SCL) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £87,050
Chile (Santiago SCL) - UK (Manchester) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £87,100
Chile (Concepción CCP) - UK (Birmingham) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £89,950
UK (Southampton) - Chile (Puerto Montt PMC) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £92,300

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A G650ER home from Santiago to Farnborough with fourteen seats comes to about £6,200 a head, on a cabin that is large for the money;

– Set each line beside the same sector in the first table. The saving is large in money and small in time, and a month of flexibility is the minimum worth offering on this route.

Helicopter charter

Helicopters in Chile do short, specific jobs: the ski slope from the capital, the coast from the hills, the vineyard from the airport. These are the transfers clients ask for, with the ski times as listed by the operators and the rest estimated from the distance:

Santiago to Valle Nevado
the ski resort 46 km east of the capital, at a base of 3,000 metres
about 15 min
Santiago to Portillo
the ski resort in the high Andes, a longer transfer than Valle Nevado
about 30 min
Santiago to Viña del Mar
the coast, about 95 km in a straight line from the centre
about 35 min
Calama to San Pedro de Atacama
the oasis town, 106 km from the airport by road
about 40 min

The ski flights are listed from June to November with departures from Tobalaba, from the airport and from the Titanium Tower, and the helicopter is one way, so the return is a second booking. The other two times are straight-line estimates at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the route for your date. Weather, wind and the load decide the rest.

Two points on Chilean rotary legs

A landing at a lodge, a vineyard or a hotel needs a site agreed in advance, and baggage for skis is limited by weight. Flights near a glacier, a volcano or a national park are subject to park and aviation rules that the operator checks before the quote is issued.

Chilean charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

SANTIAGO · THE BUSINESS TRIP

Two directors and three days of meetings

Farnborough - Santiago, Gulfstream G650ER, about 13 h 05 min each way · 2 pax

Wheels up at eight, on the ground in the afternoon on the local clock, through the FBO customs desk in a quarter of an hour. The aircraft stayed on the ramp at Santiago for the three days, since parking is seldom a problem there, and flew the party home on the third night.

ATACAMA · THE DESERT

Six friends and a week under the stars

Bristol - Calama, Gulfstream G550, about 12 h · 6 pax

The G550 had enough range for Calama with a margin, so there was no stop and no change of aircraft. The party drove the 106 km to San Pedro, spent the first night adjusting to 2,400 metres, and went out to the geysers and the salt flat before dawn.

SKI · THE HELICOPTER

A family of four and a weekend at Valle Nevado

Farnborough - Santiago, Gulfstream G650ER, then a helicopter to the slopes · 4 pax

They flew out in July, cleared customs at the FBO and were in the air to the mountain within the hour, a flight of about fifteen minutes. The skis went by road with the handler, because the helicopter limits baggage by weight, and the return was booked as a separate flight.

PATAGONIA · TWO AIRCRAFT

Eight people and a week in Torres del Paine

Biggin Hill - Santiago, G650ER, then Santiago - Punta Arenas, Challenger 350, about 13 h 05 min plus 3 h 15 min · 8 pax

The nonstop to Punta Arenas was at the very edge of the range, so the quote was a crossing to Santiago and a Challenger 350 for the south. The party slept a night in the capital and flew the second leg in the morning, then drove from Puerto Natales to the park.

EASTER ISLAND · THE SLOT

Six guests in the first week of February

Santiago - Easter Island, Praetor 600, about 5 h 10 min each way · 6 pax

The slot and the fuel were requested well ahead of Tapati, because the island asks for both and Santiago will not release the departure without the arrival slot. The aircraft waited on the island for the four days, and the handler confirmed the opening hours the day before.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE HARVEST

A flexible return from Santiago

Santiago - London Farnborough, Gulfstream G650ER empty leg, about 13 h 05 min · 4 pax

The client gave us a window of ten days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £86,700, well under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a departure in the second week of April.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Chile

1How long does it take to fly to Chile by private jet?

About 13 hours 5 minutes from London to Santiago on a Gulfstream G650ER, around 12 hours 5 minutes to Calama on a G550 and about 14 hours 55 minutes to Punta Arenas on a Global 7500. Santiago is three to five hours behind Britain, depending on the season.

2How much does a private jet to Chile cost?

From about £206,400 one way from Farnborough to Santiago on a Gulfstream G650ER. Calama on a G550 from Bristol is about £41,550 less, and Punta Arenas on a Global 7500 from Bristol is about £252,400. Internal legs are far lower, with Santiago to Concepción from £6,800 on a Chile-based jet.

3Which airport do private jets use for Santiago?

Arturo Merino Benítez, about 15 km north-west of the centre. It has two runways of 3,800 metres, is open round the clock, and is the only airport in Chile with FBOs, so customs and immigration are cleared in the FBO in about 15 minutes. A slot is needed only for departures toward Argentina.

4What paperwork does a private flight to Chile need?

British citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa and need a passport valid beyond the day they leave. The operator requests a landing permit at least 24 hours ahead and an overflight permit, and cash above US$10,000 is declared on arrival. Easter Island needs a slot for every arrival and departure.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Chile?

Yes. The animal needs a British export health certificate signed by an official vet after an examination within ten days, a parasite treatment within 30 days before export, a rabies vaccination given at least 30 days before export, and a microchip or tattoo that matches the certificate. SAG checks the animal on arrival. A dog needs a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before landing back in Britain.

6Can a private jet from London fly nonstop to Punta Arenas or Easter Island?

Only the longest-range types, and not always. Punta Arenas is 7,472 nautical miles from Farnborough, at the edge of the Global 7500's published range, and Easter Island is 7,636 nautical miles from Farnborough, beyond it. Most clients fly to Santiago on a G650ER and take a second jet for the south or the island, which costs less and leaves the long-range jet where it can wait.
