What is included in a private jet charter price?

The total price of a private jet charter typically includes the following components:

  1. Aircraft hire fee - based on flight hours at the applicable hourly rate for the aircraft type;
  2. Fuel costs - approximately 30% of the total charter cost;
  3. Crew salaries and expenses - pilots and cabin crew for the duration of the trip;
  4. Air navigation services and overflight fees;
  5. Airport landing and handling charges at departure and arrival airports;
  6. Standard catering and refreshments;
  7. Positioning fee if the aircraft needs to travel empty to your departure airport.

Additional costs which are quoted separately include bespoke catering and special menu requests, ground transfers, de-icing in winter (£500 to £2,000 depending on aircraft size), out-of-hours handling surcharges, overnight crew accommodation on multi-day trips, and Air Passenger Duty (APD). From April 2026, UK APD rates for private jets over 20 tonnes increased by 50%, reaching £1,141 per passenger on long-haul routes. Our quotes are fully itemised and the exact price is agreed in advance and written into the contract.

Recent private jet charter flights - examples

Below are recent charter examples from our booking history, covering a range of routes, aircraft and group sizes. Prices are one-way and include all standard fees.

  • London Farnborough to Geneva, Phenom 300, 5 passengers - a ski group, January. A family travelling to the Swiss Alps for a week of skiing. Departure from Farnborough at 07:30, on the ground in Geneva by 09:45 with transfers to Verbier pre-arranged. Charter was £6,200. Same group returned the following Friday - return leg was arranged as an empty leg and came in at £2,800.
  • Manchester to Ibiza, Challenger 350, 9 passengers - a corporate summer trip, July. A business group combining a two-day team retreat with client entertainment on the island. Departure from Manchester on a Thursday afternoon, return Sunday evening. The summer timing meant the jet was already positioning towards the Mediterranean, which kept the outbound price efficient at £14,200. Return was £16,800 due to higher demand on Sunday evenings from the island.
  • Edinburgh to Dubai, Global 6000, 12 passengers - a Middle East business delegation, March. An executive team flying to Dubai for a three-day programme of meetings and a property investment event. Non-stop sector of approximately 3,750 nm, 8 hours. The Global 6000 was based in the UK following a previous mission, which meant no positioning cost. Charter was £58,000. The group used a locally based aircraft in Dubai for day trips to Abu Dhabi and Riyadh during the visit.
  • London Luton to Palma, Falcon 2000LX, 10 passengers - a family summer holiday, August. Peak August travel to Majorca. The Falcon 2000LX offered a large cabin for luggage-heavy family travel and a comfortable 2-hour crossing. Booked six weeks in advance at £22,000. A comparable last-minute request the same week came back at £28,500 - the difference reflecting how quickly good aircraft options are absorbed in peak August.
  • Birmingham to Nice then Monaco, Citation XLS+, 7 passengers - a Grand Prix group, May. A group attending the Monaco Grand Prix, routing through Nice (the closest jet-capable airport to Monaco) with a pre-arranged transfer to the principality. The XLS+ handled the sector comfortably at £11,400 from Birmingham. Arranging the aircraft to stay on ground in Nice for the weekend and return Monday added a crew overnight cost of approximately £800.
  • London to New York, Gulfstream G450, 11 passengers - a transatlantic business crossing, October. A legal team flying to New York for a week of deal negotiations. The G450 was positioned from Paris following a previous mission, which added a modest repositioning cost. Non-stop crossing of approximately 7.5 hours. Charter was £68,000 including all fees. The team returned commercial due to schedule uncertainty - a fairly common pattern on transatlantic legal trips.
  • Glasgow to Marrakech, Legacy 650, 12 passengers - a multi-generational birthday group, April. A family group celebrating a significant birthday with a long weekend in Morocco. The Legacy 650 handled the approximately 1,700 nm sector comfortably with room for everyone and luggage. Charter from Glasgow was £26,500. The group specifically chose a non-London departure to save the drive and parking, and Glasgow's positioning in April meant the aircraft was already in Scotland following a previous charter.

The examples above reflect actual charter arrangements. Prices vary depending on season, aircraft positioning, lead time and specific requirements. Contact us for a quote on your specific route.

How private jet charter prices are actually determined

Published price ranges give a useful starting point, but the final number on your charter quote is determined by several dynamic factors that interact in real time. Understanding how this works helps explain why two apparently identical requests - same route, same aircraft type - can come back with noticeably different prices.

Aircraft positioning is the biggest variable. If a suitable aircraft is already on the ground at or near your departure airport, or is already flying into the region for another booking, the charter price reflects only the flight time you actually use. If the aircraft needs to fly empty to reach your departure point first - a repositioning or ferry leg - that cost is reflected in the quote, either as a separate line item or folded into the total. On busy routes and during peak periods, more aircraft are moving around the network, which often means positioning costs are lower because jets are already nearby. On less common routes or at quieter times, the positioning leg can add meaningfully to the total.

Timing and lead time affect availability and price. Booking four to six weeks ahead gives access to the full available fleet and allows time to find the most efficient positioning solution. Booking 48 to 72 hours ahead means working with whatever is available and positioned at that moment - which can be either very efficient (a jet already nearby) or notably more expensive (the only available option needs to travel in from another country). Peak periods - Christmas, New Year, Wimbledon, the August Mediterranean season, school half terms - compress availability rapidly, and prices firm up as the date approaches. The same aircraft on the same route can cost 20 to 30% more if booked at peak versus off-peak.

What we actually check before sending a quote. Before presenting options, we verify what aircraft are physically on the ground or already positioning into the UK and European network for your dates. That ground-truth availability is usually what defines whether a quote comes in at the lower or higher end of the range for any given route. An aircraft already sitting at Farnborough or Biggin Hill for a Geneva departure is a fundamentally different proposition from one that needs to fly in from Istanbul. We show you both when both are available, with a clear breakdown of the costs involved.

One-way versus return pricing. A one-way charter typically includes a positioning cost to bring the aircraft to you and, if the aircraft returns empty, the cost of flying it back. A return charter eliminates one of those empty legs, which is why return bookings often represent better value per sector than two separate one-way requests. When a return is not practical - open dates, uncertain return schedule - we look for empty leg opportunities on the return sector to reduce the overall cost.

Fuel and operator cost structures. Approximately 30% of a charter price is fuel. Fuel prices fluctuate, and some operators quote all-in rates while others add a fuel adjustment at the time of confirmation. Our quotes are always fully itemised and all-in, so the number you agree is the number on the contract.

Private Jet Charter price

Private jet charter vs business class - is it worth it?

The comparison depends entirely on group size, route and how you value time. For a solo traveller on a London to Paris sector, business class on Eurostar or a commercial flight is almost always more economical. But the calculation changes quickly as group size increases or the route becomes less well-served commercially.

Consider a group of six flying from London to Geneva for a board meeting:

  • Commercial business class: approximately £900 to £1,400 per person return, depending on lead time. Total for six: £5,400 to £8,400 return, plus taxis, airport parking and approximately 4 hours at the airport each way;
  • Private jet (Phenom 300, one way): £8,500 from Farnborough. Departure 30 minutes before the flight, on the ground in Geneva in under 1 hour 20 minutes. Door-to-door time approximately 2.5 hours versus 5+ hours commercially. Return leg arranged separately or as an empty leg.

For this group, the cost difference on a one-way basis is modest. On a return basis, if the empty leg return can be arranged, the total can come in below equivalent business class for the group. For 10 or 12 passengers, the private jet becomes clearly competitive per person even before accounting for time saved.

Where private charter is consistently better value regardless of cost: same-day multi-city itineraries (London-Geneva-Milan-London in one day is routine privately, impossible commercially at reasonable times), flexible departure times, destinations with limited commercial connections, and any journey where the group's combined time cost makes 3 to 4 hours of airport overhead genuinely expensive.

Private jet prices by departure city

Most published price guides focus exclusively on London departures. Below are indicative one-way starting prices for the five most popular European and long-haul routes from four major UK departure cities. Prices reflect the most practical aircraft for each sector.

  • To Nice / Cannes: from London £5,200 (light jet) | from Manchester £9,800 (midsize) | from Edinburgh £11,400 (midsize) | from Birmingham £5,700 (light jet)
  • To Geneva: from London £4,200 (light jet) | from Manchester £6,800 (light jet) | from Edinburgh £8,600 (midsize) | from Birmingham £4,800 (light jet)
  • To Ibiza: from London £7,800 (light jet) | from Manchester £12,400 (midsize) | from Edinburgh £14,200 (midsize) | from Birmingham £11,800 (midsize)
  • To Dubai: from London £52,000 (Challenger 650) | from Manchester £54,000 | from Edinburgh £55,000 | from Birmingham £53,000
  • To New York: from London £62,000 (G450 / Global 6000) | from Manchester £60,000 | from Edinburgh £58,000 | from Birmingham £61,000

Note that for long-haul routes to Dubai and New York, the price difference between UK departure cities is relatively small (typically £2,000 to £4,000) because the positioning distance is a small fraction of the total sector. For short European routes, the difference is proportionally larger - departing from Edinburgh rather than London adds roughly 280 nautical miles to the Geneva sector, which is reflected in the price.

When to book - seasonal pricing and peak periods

Private jet charter prices are not fixed - they respond to demand in real time, exactly as hotel or commercial airline prices do. Understanding when demand spikes lets you book more efficiently or, where possible, plan around the peaks.

Periods when prices are typically 20 to 40% above baseline:

  • Christmas and New Year (20 December to 3 January) - the single highest-demand period of the year across all UK departure airports. Mediterranean, Caribbean and ski resort routes compress rapidly. Aircraft availability at busy London airports can be exhausted 6 to 8 weeks ahead;
  • August (Mediterranean routes) - peak leisure season for Ibiza, Majorca, Nice, Cannes and Sardinia. Friday and Sunday prices are particularly firm. Tuesday to Thursday departures in August are typically 15 to 20% cheaper than weekend equivalents;
  • Monaco Grand Prix (late May) - a concentrated spike of 3 to 4 days where Nice and the Cote d'Azur jets move very quickly. Lead time of 4 to 6 weeks advisable;
  • Wimbledon fortnight (late June to early July) - demand from London airports rises sharply, particularly for short European routes;
  • School half-term breaks (February, May, October) - sharp short-term spikes lasting 5 to 7 days on family leisure routes;
  • January-February ski season (Geneva, Chambery, Salzburg, Innsbruck) - consistent elevated demand on Friday outbound and Sunday return.

When prices are typically at their lowest:

  • November - the quietest month in UK private aviation. Good availability, efficient pricing, no competing event demand;
  • March (excluding Easter) - pre-summer shoulder period. Aircraft positioning into the Mediterranean for the season can create empty leg opportunities;
  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday departures across most periods - weekend premium is real and consistent. A Wednesday Geneva departure can be 15 to 25% less than an equivalent Friday;
  • Early morning departures - less competition for slots at busy airports, and some operators offer better rates for 06:00 to 08:00 departures.

empty legs

Empty leg flights - how they actually work

Empty legs (also called ferry flights or repositioning flights) are one of the most misunderstood cost-saving opportunities in private aviation. The savings are real - typically 50 to 75% off the standard charter price for the same aircraft - but the constraints are specific, and empty legs suit some clients much better than others.

What an empty leg is: when a private jet completes a charter and needs to return to its base or travel to the starting point of its next booking, it flies empty. The operator is paying for that flight regardless - fuel, crew, handling - so they offer it at a significant discount to recover some cost. A Global 6000 flying empty from Nice to London after dropping off clients might normally cost £45,000 to charter. As an empty leg it might be offered at £14,000 to £18,000.

The constraints to understand:

  • The departure time is fixed by the primary charter - it cannot be moved by more than 2 to 3 hours in most cases;
  • The route is fixed - you cannot change the destination;
  • If the primary charter is cancelled or amended, your empty leg booking may be cancelled with short notice;
  • Empty legs are typically one-way only - the return journey needs to be arranged separately;
  • The best empty legs on popular routes (London-Nice, London-Ibiza, London-Geneva) are booked quickly - often within hours of becoming available.

Who empty legs work well for: clients with genuine schedule flexibility, those travelling one-way or who have a return arranged independently, and those comfortable with a modest risk of short-notice cancellation. For a group with a fixed board meeting or an event with hard deadlines, an empty leg on the outbound sector introduces risk that most clients prefer to avoid.

We monitor empty leg availability across our network and will always flag relevant opportunities for your route when they arise alongside a standard charter quote.

VAT on private jet charter in the UK

VAT treatment on private jet charter is one of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of charter pricing for UK corporate clients. The rules are genuinely nuanced and getting them right can make a material difference to the total cost, particularly for businesses that can recover input VAT.

UK domestic flights: private jet charters that depart and arrive within the UK are subject to 20% UK VAT. For VAT-registered businesses, this is reclaimable as input tax in the normal way, subject to the standard tests for business purpose.

International flights departing the UK: charters that depart the UK and land outside the UK are zero-rated for VAT purposes (not exempt - zero-rated, which means the supply is VAT taxable at 0%). In practice this means no VAT is charged on the charter price for a flight from London to Geneva, London to Dubai or any other international sector.

Return flights: on a return charter (same aircraft, same booking), the outbound international leg is zero-rated and the inbound leg returning to the UK is also typically zero-rated, as the flight is treated as a single international journey.

private jets uk

For private individuals: the VAT position is the same, but there is no ability to reclaim. The practical impact is that domestic UK charters cost 20% more than the quoted ex-VAT price for non-VAT-registered clients. International charters are unaffected.

Air Passenger Duty (APD): separate from VAT, APD applies to passengers departing the UK on all private jets. From April 2026 the higher rate applying to private jets over 20 tonnes increased by 50%, reaching £142 per passenger for short-haul (under 2,000 miles) and £1,141 per passenger for long-haul. For aircraft under 20 tonnes (most light and midsize jets), the standard reduced rate applies. APD is always included in our quoted prices.

We recommend that corporate clients booking private jet charter consult their tax advisors on the specific VAT recovery position for their bookings. Our invoices are always fully itemised and VAT-compliant to facilitate recovery where applicable.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight on the type of aircraft. Below are approximate prices per flight hour for various types of business jets, in GBP and EUR:

  • Business liners - from £10,300 per flight hour (approx. 12,100 EUR);
  • Light jet - from £2,100 to £3,000 per flight hour (approx. 2,450 - 3,500 EUR);
  • Long-haul jet (similar to Global 5000, Gulfstream G550, Falcon 7X, etc.) - from £5,800 to £8,800 per flight hour (approx. 6,800 - 10,300 EUR);
  • Medium-sized jet (identical to Cessna Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP, etc.) - from £3,000 to £3,700 per flight hour (approx. 3,500 - 4,350 EUR);

Private jet charter prices - FAQ

How much does it cost to hire a private jet in the UK?
Private jet charter prices in the UK start from around £3,700 for a light jet on a short European sector such as London to Paris. Midsize jets start from approximately £8,700 for the same route. Long-haul destinations such as New York start from around £62,000. The exact price depends on aircraft type, route, passenger numbers, dates and additional services required.

What is the private jet cost per hour in the UK?
Hourly rates in the UK range from £850 per hour for turboprops to £10,300 or more per hour for business liners. Light jets cost £2,100 to £3,000 per hour, midsize jets £3,000 to £3,700 per hour, large jets £4,900 to £5,800 per hour, and long-range jets £5,800 to £8,800 per hour. Most operators charge a minimum of one flight hour even on shorter sectors.

How much is a private jet to rent for a day?
A full day's private jet charter in the UK typically starts from around £8,000 to £12,000 for a light jet covering short European routes, and from £18,000 to £30,000 for a large cabin jet. For intercontinental travel, a day's use of an ultra-long-range jet can range from £65,000 to £130,000 or more depending on the route and aircraft.

Are there hidden costs in private jet charter prices?
Our quotes are fully itemised with no hidden charges. The main components that first-time clients sometimes overlook are positioning fees, overnight crew accommodation on multi-day trips, de-icing in winter, out-of-hours handling charges at certain airports, and Air Passenger Duty (APD). From April 2026, UK APD for private jets over 20 tonnes on long-haul routes increased to £1,141 per passenger. All costs are confirmed and fixed in the contract before departure.

How can I reduce the cost of a private jet charter?
Empty leg flights offer savings of 50 to 75% on standard charter rates. Flying midweek, choosing regional departure airports, selecting the right aircraft size for your group and booking outside peak periods such as Christmas, Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix all reduce the total cost. Our consultants will advise on the most cost-efficient option for your specific route and dates.

How quickly can I get a private jet price?
Submit a request using the form on this page and our aviation consultant will contact you within 5 minutes. A full price calculation typically takes 15 to 40 minutes. The price is then fixed in a written contract before departure.

What is the cheapest way to charter a private jet from the UK?
Turboprops such as the King Air 350 start from £850 per hour and are the most economical option for short UK domestic and near-European routes. Light jets from £2,100 per hour are the most popular entry-level option for European city pairs. Empty leg flights on any aircraft category can reduce costs by 50 to 75% for clients with flexible travel dates.
