Private jet charter in San Sebastian - Donostia

A light jet leaves a London field at seven and is on the Spanish side of the Bidasoa by half past nine, with the whole of a long lunch in the Parte Vieja still ahead. Private Jets UK builds the charter around the airport you land at. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. San Sebastián's own airport sits at Hondarribia, about 20 km from the centre, with a 1,590 m runway that suits light and midsize jets in daylight, while Biarritz in France and Bilbao, both with longer runways, take the larger cabins and the late returns. Choosing between the three is most of the planning.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in San Sebastián depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to San Sebastián?

1 hour 35 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, 2 hours 5 minutes from Edinburgh, and an extra hour on the clock at the other end, because Spain keeps Central European time. At 475 to 789 nautical miles from the British fields we use, San Sebastián is a comfortable light-jet sector from the south of England and a job for a bigger cabin from Scotland. The table gives the sector from each field.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Hondarribia at about half past nine local time. The airport lies roughly 20 km from the centre of San Sebastián, which is typically a short run along the coast road or the motorway, and customs and immigration at the field are arranged in advance with the handler, so the arrival is brisk. A client who sets out from a central London office can be at a bar counter in the Parte Vieja around noon, and the whole trip comes to about three and a half hours, where a scheduled journey with a change usually takes most of the day.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people with ordinary bags, take a light jet. A Citation CJ3+ or a Phenom has landing room to spare on the airfield's 1,427 m of declared landing distance, and what you save against a midsize cabin pays for the car and the table you booked;

– Past four, or with golf clubs and a case of txakoli on the way home, we quote a midsize alongside so that you see both figures. A Citation XLS+ or a Latitude is still an ordinary visitor at the small airfield;

– The airport's own aeronautical information names no size limit for business jets, and the limits are the ones physics sets: a runway of 1,590 m, no low-visibility procedures and a stand that the handler assigns. Long-range heavy jets are better pointed at Bilbao or Biarritz, and for anything above a midsize cabin we ask the operator to confirm landing performance for the day before the quote goes out.

The sector price barely moves with the airport, so a larger cabin is simply quoted into Bilbao or Biarritz instead. From Biggin Hill a Challenger 350 costs about £11,750 into San Sebastián and about £12,000 into Bilbao, and a Gulfstream G450 about £16,750 and £17,100. The price of the sector is rarely what decides the airport. The runway, the hour of the return and the programme on the ground do.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. Onward from San Sebastián: when the aircraft wins and when the car does

Biarritz airport is only 14 nautical miles from Hondarribia on the chart and about 32 km by road, so nobody charters a flight for it: you land at the field that suits the programme and drive. Bilbao is 51 nautical miles away, about half an hour in a Pilatus PC-12, against roughly an hour and ten minutes on the motorway to the city, and it is the hop worth paying for only when the road leg would eat the day. The sectors that do pay are the long ones, Madrid and Barcelona, where the aircraft saves a morning against any other way of going. Spain and France are both inside the Schengen area, so the first landing carries the formalities and the hops after it are free of passport control. One legal point deserves a warning: a British-registered aircraft cannot simply carry passengers between two Spanish airports, so a hop such as Hondarribia to Bilbao is arranged with an EU operator, and we choose the operator accordingly.

Before you accept an onward quote from the Basque coast

– Who flies the leg. A flight between Britain and Spain is the ordinary case for a British operator, while a Spanish domestic leg, or a hop between Spain and France, can need an EU operator or approval from the national authorities, and that is checked before the quote is written, not after it;

– Whether the legs are one booking. San Sebastián to Madrid and on to Lisbon over three days costs noticeably less arranged as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of returning to base between stops.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for San Sebastián:

Light jets, the natural fit for the small airfield

Four or five people, ordinary luggage and a daytime programme: this is the traffic the airfield suits best. Nothing here lacks the range, and the money is better spent on the car and the table than on a bigger cabin you will not fill.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for golf clubs and a case of txakoli

The hold fills faster than the seats on a gastronomy trip: bottles from Getaria, cheese and tinned fish from the markets, and clubs when the plan includes a round. A midsize cabin copes with all of it at the small airfield.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large, usually into Bilbao or Biarritz

For a team that wants to work in the air, a group travelling as one party, or a trip that carries on to Madrid or Lisbon. Bilbao has a 2,600 m runway and Biarritz 2,250 m, which is the margin these aircraft like, and the drive to the coast is the price of it.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops inside the region: Bilbao and Biarritz are about half an hour or less in the air, and the saving over a jet on those distances is large.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the last stretch: a loop over the bay, a hop along the coast to Getaria, or a transfer to a restaurant or a winery. Where a helicopter may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. San Sebastián sits between Bilbao, Biarritz, Pamplona and Madrid, so a quote may name one of those cities as the positioning point for the aircraft. That is normal for a region without a large based fleet, and it is frequently where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports near San Sebastián

Three airports matter for a trip to the Basque coast, and two more belong to itineraries inland. Which one is right depends on where the programme is and how big the aircraft is, not on the brand of the jet.

Airport What it gives you
San Sebastián
EAS / LESO
The nearest airport to the city and the right one for light and midsize jets by day. It stands at Hondarribia on the Bidasoa river, which forms the border with France, about 20 km from the centre. There is one runway, 04/22, 1,590 m by 45 m, and both thresholds are displaced, so the declared landing distance is 1,427 m. The instrument approaches are to runway 22 only, and low-visibility procedures are not available, so fog on the coast matters more here than at the bigger fields. Two handlers are listed for general aviation and executive flights, AviaVIP and United Aviation Services, and one of them must be named on the flight plan. Jet A-1 is supplied by Exolum. Hours are 07:30 to 21:45 local time, and customs and immigration are on request. Choose it for a light or midsize jet, a daytime programme in San Sebastián and a return that leaves before the evening
Biarritz Pays Basque
BIQ / LFBZ
The French alternative, about 47 km from San Sebastián by road and typically forty minutes with the border crossing. The runway is 2,250 m, the airport has a terminal for private and charter jets with a VIP lounge, and border control is available on request. Traffic services run later into the evening than at Hondarribia and can be extended for approved flights, so the airport is the usual answer for a late return or a larger cabin. Choose it when the programme is split between the French coast and Spain, or when the aircraft is too big for the small field
Bilbao
BIO / LEBB
The Spanish gateway for heavy jets, 9 km north of Bilbao and about 100 km by road from San Sebastián. It has two runways, 12/30 at 2,600 m and 10/28 at about 2,000 m, three listed handlers for general aviation (Universal Aviation with its partner NIS, AviaVIP and United Aviation Services), customs and immigration during aerodrome hours, which in local time run from about 06:45 to 23:30, and no slot requirement or curfew in the aeronautical information. Choose it for a long-range jet, a late departure, the Guggenheim and Rioja Alavesa, or a trip that begins on the Basque coast and ends in Bilbao
Vitoria-Gasteiz
VIT / LEVT
A mixed passenger and cargo airport with a 3,500 m runway, in the inland province of Álava. It handles a large cargo operation, so expect a working airport rather than a resort one. Choose it when the programme is Rioja Alavesa and the aircraft is large, because Vitoria lies on the road from San Sebastián to the wine country
Pamplona
PNA / LEPP
A regional airport 6 km from the city with a runway of about 2,200 m, in Navarre. The A-15 motorway links Pamplona with San Sebastián. Choose it when the programme is in Navarre and San Sebastián is the add-on, not the other way round

Four things to settle before a San Sebastián landing:

The airfield and its handlers

San Sebastián has a general aviation apron and two listed handlers for executive flights, AviaVIP and United Aviation Services. Fuelling, handling and security are available on request. We order the car, the catering and the reception through the handler, who works to the flight plan and can adjust when it changes. We have not found a separate business aviation terminal described, so we agree the meeting point with the handler for your date.

Hours, clearance and parking

Aerodrome hours are 07:30 to 21:45 local time all year, with air traffic services from 07:15 to 22:05 that can be extended slightly for flights with prior permission. Private flights need clearance from the airport's operations office, with the operator, aircraft type and times, and the handler assigns the stand, because the apron is small. The aeronautical information also bars overflight of France at night, which we take into account for late departures.

Border and passport

Spain is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you clear the border at the first landing. At Hondarribia customs and immigration are on request, with authorisation needed three hours ahead for aircraft of up to ten seats and 24 hours ahead for larger ones. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU border system.

Car and the coast

Give us the meeting point as well as the flight, so the driver waits where you come out. The airport is about 20 km from the centre of San Sebastián, and Getaria is about 25 km from the city along the coast. A late arrival needs planning, because the field closes at 21:45 local time, so ask for the last hour the handler can support.

business aviation

Border, passport and the road from Biarritz

The first landing in the Schengen area is where the formalities happen. At Hondarribia they are arranged through the handler on request, with the notice periods given above, and at Biarritz through the airport's terminal, where the police are available on prior notice, so we send the details with the flight plan. After a French landing the frontier is easy: the road to San Sebastián crosses the Bidasoa, the river that forms the frontier, and there is normally no passport check on the way, although a temporary border control can be introduced at short notice, so carry the passports. For the return, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure.

From the apron to La Concha

San Sebastián wraps itself around the bay of La Concha, with Monte Igueldo closing it on the west, Monte Urgull rising beside the Parte Vieja and the small island of Santa Clara in the middle of the water. The Old Town was walled until the nineteenth century and most of its buildings date from the rebuilding that followed, which is why the pintxos bars sit on a tight grid of streets that is easy to cross on foot. Across the Urumea river the Kursaal cubes face Zurriola beach, and the film festival takes over that side of town for a week.

The food is the reason many clients book. The tourist board counts 19 Michelin stars within 25 km of the city hall, and the three-star houses are the ones that decide the dates of a trip.

Tables worth planning the flight around

– Three stars: Arzak, Akelarre on the slope of Mount Igueldo above the bay, and Martín Berasategui, about 7 km from the city;

– Two stars: Mugaritz, between Astigarraga and Rentería about fifteen minutes out, and Amelia at the Hotel María Cristina by the Urumea river;

– One star in the Old Town and beyond: Kokotxa beside the port, and Elkano in Getaria, where the speciality is fish grilled over the coals. Tables at the top houses are booked a long way ahead, so send us the dates you hold before the aircraft is quoted, not after it.

A second kind of food trip is the Basque Culinary Center, a gastronomy faculty run with Mondragon University in the San Sebastián Technology Park. Its building looks like a stack of plates, it was the first in Spain to offer official university-level training in gastronomy, and it has an exhibition hall, a restaurant and a coffee bar. It is a visit for a food-minded group with a morning to spare, and the chef's table is the part that has to be arranged in advance.

Further out, three coastal towns repay a half-day. Getaria has a monument to Juan Sebastián Elkano, the local sailor who is credited as the first to circumnavigate the globe, the Balenciaga Museum in the couturier's birthplace and a protected-origin white wine, txakoli, poured with the grilled fish. Hondarribia has stone-paved streets inside its walls, the Castle of Emperor Charles V and bars along La Marina that are known for their pintxos. Pasaia is the working harbour, with narrow streets at Pasajes de San Juan, a boat museum and a workshop building a replica of the Nao San Juan. Inland and further, Rioja Alavesa is a day for a driver and a plan: Marqués de Riscal at Elciego, a hotel and winery designed by Frank Gehry, and the Ysios winery at Laguardia by Santiago Calatrava are two of about a hundred wineries in the area that welcome visitors.

Flying to San Sebastián with a dog or a cat

For a pet the paperwork is the part of a Basque weekend that needs planning, and the flight is the easy bit: the animal sits beside you in the cabin, never in a hold, and on a sector of an hour and a half most simply sleep. The date on the health certificate is the detail that goes wrong, because the certificate is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU.

private flight with animals

What an EU country such as Spain asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the San Sebastián run

– Spain does not ask for tapeworm treatment on the way in, only Britain asks for it on the way home, so it is a vet appointment you book in San Sebastián itself towards the end of the stay. Count back from the departure time, because the window is 24 to 120 hours and a flight that moves by a day can move the window out of reach;

– The order of the chip and the vaccine matters. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be refused entry, so the certificate is checked line by line before the flight, not at the airfield;

– A pintxos weekend with a dog is an ordinary booking, but each hotel and each bar has its own view of animals. Settle the hotel before the quote, and tell us if a day across the border in Biarritz or Hendaye is planned, so that we check the French side too.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The San Sebastián calendar: a gastronomic city with a festival habit

San Sebastián has no single season, because the table is open all year. What changes is the noise level, and three events turn the city from a quiet one into a full one: a jazz festival, a week of fireworks and a film festival. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

January and February
On 20 January the Tamborrada takes over the city: companies of drummers march through the neighbourhoods playing drums and barrels for 24 hours from midnight. Carnival follows in February. In between the city is quiet, which suits a restaurant weekend
March to June
No large festival fills these months, and that is the point. Rooms are easier, tables are easier and aircraft are easier, which makes spring the simplest time to book a food trip, a wine day in Rioja Alavesa or a visit to the Basque Culinary Center
July
Jazzaldia, the jazz festival, with concerts in halls, squares and open-air stages, some ticketed and some free. A long weekend is the usual shape of a trip
August
Semana Grande, the Big Week of concerts, sport and street celebrations, with the international fireworks competition held on several evenings over La Concha bay. Usually the tightest stretch of the year for rooms, cars and the apron alike
September
The San Sebastián film festival, usually about a week in September around the Kursaal and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, and the La Concha regatta, a race of traditional rowing boats on the first two Sundays of the month. Hondarribia holds its Alarde parade on 8 September
October and November
The festivals are over and the city returns to its restaurants. Weekend food trips and midweek business visits make up most of the flying
December
The Santo Tomás fair on 21 December turns the centre and the Old Town into a country market for a day, with food stalls and farm produce

Why a festival weekend costs more

The aircraft are rarely the problem. The European light and midsize fleet is large and the Basque coast is within reach of it. What gets tight is the small apron at Hondarribia, where the handler assigns every stand and private flights need clearance in advance, and the good hotel rooms and cars, which peak together. A booking made two weeks before the film festival or the fireworks can still be done, but it may mean the party landing at Biarritz or Bilbao and driving, or an aircraft positioned from Madrid or Bordeaux, and that costs more. The same booking made four or five weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks a charter to San Sebastián can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the San Sebastián price down

  • Move the dates by a few days where you can. The week after Semana Grande and the weeks between the festivals are calmer than the festival weekends themselves;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Madrid, Bilbao or Biarritz takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
  • Compare the three airports. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill the sector costs about £7,500 into Biarritz, £7,600 into San Sebastián and £7,750 into Bilbao, so the difference is small and the programme on the ground should decide.

Types of flights

San Sebastián produces a different mix from the Alpine or the Mediterranean destinations we cover, because it is a small city with a very large reputation at the table, and its clients tend to plan around a booking rather than around a beach.

  • Gastronomy weekends, built around a three-star dinner and a pintxos crawl through the Parte Vieja the evening before;
  • Film festival trips in September, for guests and delegations who want to arrive on the day of a screening and leave after it;
  • Festival weeks, from Jazzaldia in July to Semana Grande in August, typically long weekends from the south of England;
  • Wine days, flying into San Sebastián or Bilbao and driving to Rioja Alavesa, or the other way round;
  • Culture breaks that put the Guggenheim in Bilbao on the same trip as the coast;
  • Business visits and incentive groups, a morning in town, a lunch with a view of the bay, plus onward hops to Madrid or Barcelona.

The day trip is the one to look at closely. Land at about half past nine, leave Hondarribia at five in the afternoon local time and you are back on the British side by about half past five in the evening, UK time, with about seven and a half hours on the ground in between. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for, but it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters. We quote it both ways, so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. San Sebastián has no single event that creates them, so they come from the rhythm of a weekend destination, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where San Sebastián empty legs come from

– Weekend food trips. Aircraft that bring a party on the Friday and leave empty on the Sunday, or that arrive empty to collect one, put a leg on the market towards Britain or Madrid;

– Festival weeks. The film festival and Semana Grande produce one-way arrivals followed by a repositioning flight home, and an outbound leg on the Monday morning is the one most often offered;

– Spanish loops. Operators moving aircraft between Madrid, Bilbao, Biarritz and the north coast put short hops on the market, and those hops can be cheap.

Because only light and midsize aircraft use the small airfield comfortably, the choice of empty legs into Hondarribia is thinner than into Bilbao, and a client who is open to Bilbao or Biarritz widens it considerably. A client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a San Sebastián match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In San Sebastián a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and not the middle. The city is small enough to cross by car, and the places where rotary flight changes the journey are the coast, the green valleys inland and the link with a jet that lands at another airport. Scenic flights are listed as leaving from the airport at Hondarribia, and private helicopter transfers can be arranged between the airports of Bilbao, San Sebastián, Biarritz, Vitoria and Pamplona. The airport's own procedures treat helicopters like fixed-wing aircraft, with a stand of their own.

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check the status of a hotel terrace or a vineyard before the quote is written, not after it;

– Weather sets the schedule. Atlantic cloud, sea fog and strong wind can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– A flight across the border into France means a second set of permissions. Tell us the landing site at the other end when you ask for the quote, and book the helicopter together with the jet.

The machines normally used for this work are the Airbus H125 for scenic and mountain flying, the wider H130 for transfers, and the H135 or the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

San Sebastián charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

GASTRONOMY WEEKEND · A TABLE BOOKED FIRST

The dinner set the date and the aircraft followed

Farnborough - San Sebastián, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 25 min · 4 pax

The reservation at a three-star house came first, and the client asked for a flight that fitted it. We matched an arrival on the Friday with a departure on the Sunday afternoon, the handler arranged the car, and the party spent the Saturday on a pintxos crawl through the Parte Vieja. A light jet was the right size and the small airfield was the right distance.

FILM FESTIVAL · A DELEGATION OF SIX

Arrive for the screening, leave after it

London Luton - San Sebastián, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 30 min · 6 pax

The festival weeks are the ones in which the apron fills, so the clearance for the stand was requested early and the arrival was timed for the early afternoon. The return was planned for the next morning, well inside the airfield's hours, with Biarritz agreed in writing as the fallback in case of fog.

WINE AND ART · A HEAVY JET INTO BILBAO

Rioja Alavesa and the Guggenheim in three days

London Luton - Bilbao, Gulfstream G450, about 1 h 30 min · 9 pax

Nine people with luggage and a firm view on cabin height, so the booking went to Bilbao and its 2,600 m runway instead of the small field on the coast. A driver took the group to the wineries of Rioja Alavesa and on to San Sebastián, and the aircraft waited for the return at the end.

A LATE RETURN · THE FRENCH AIRPORT

Dinner ran later than the airfield stays open

Biggin Hill - Biarritz, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 30 min · 6 pax

The client wanted a long dinner and a departure at ten at night. Hondarribia closes at 21:45 local time, so we landed the party at Biarritz and arranged the car across the border, about forty minutes each way, and the return left when the table did.

A DOG ON BOARD · THE PAPERWORK FIRST

Four adults and a spaniel for a long weekend

Cardiff - San Sebastián, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment in San Sebastián for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the hotel accepted the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages rather than three.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING NORTH

A jet already going your way

San Sebastián - Farnborough, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 25 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday afternoon departure to the south of England.

Frequently asked questions about flying to San Sebastián

1How long is a private jet flight from London to San Sebastián?

About 1 hour 35 minutes from London City and Biggin Hill in a light jet, and around 1 hour 30 minutes from Luton in a Phenom, covering roughly 496 to 535 nautical miles. From Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester allow about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 5 minutes. Spain is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands at about half past nine local time.

2How much does a private jet to San Sebastián cost?

From about £7,600 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, £7,700 from London City, and £7,550 to £8,000 in a Phenom from Farnborough, Cardiff or Luton. A midsize cabin runs £9,000 to £10,350 from the south and the Midlands, and from Scotland allow about £16,850. Jazzaldia, Semana Grande and the film festival can price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for San Sebastián?

San Sebastián airport (EAS / LESO) at Hondarribia, about 20 km from the centre, suits a light or midsize jet by day: its runway is 1,590 m with a declared landing distance of 1,427 m, and it is open from 07:30 to 21:45 local time. Biarritz (BIQ / LFBZ), about 47 km away in France, and Bilbao (BIO / LEBB), about 100 km away, have runways of 2,250 m and 2,600 m and take larger cabins and late returns.

4Do I need a visa or customs clearance for San Sebastián?

Britain is outside Schengen and Spain is inside it, so you clear passport control and customs at the first landing. At San Sebastián they are available on request, with authorisation three hours ahead for aircraft of up to ten seats and 24 hours ahead for larger ones. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport less than ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure. The operator and our team handle the aircraft paperwork.

5Can a large private jet land at San Sebastián airport?

The airport's aeronautical information lists no size limit for business jets, but the runway is 1,590 m with 1,427 m of declared landing distance, there are no low-visibility procedures and the instrument approaches are to one runway end only. Light and midsize jets are the natural fit. A long-range heavy jet is normally flown into Bilbao or Biarritz, and the operator confirms landing performance for the day before we quote.

6Can I take my dog to San Sebastián on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and an EU country such as Spain asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. Spain does not ask for a tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
