Private jet charter in Sharjah

A private jet from London to the northern Emirates gets a choice that airline passengers never see: land at Dubai International, where slots and parking are tight, or use a field 17 km away that asks for no slot at all. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever of the two suits the party and the aircraft. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Sharjah International has one runway of about 4,060 m, never closes, and keeps customs and immigration inside the business aviation terminal, so the drive to central Dubai is the only part of the arrival you do not control. What is left to decide is the cabin for a sector of more than seven hours, the date, and whether the passengers are going to Dubai for its meetings or to Sharjah for itself: a quieter city of museums, a famous book fair and no alcohol.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Sharjah depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Sharjah?

Seven hours ten from Biggin Hill or Stansted, about seven hours twenty from the Midlands, seven and a half from Cardiff, and seven hours forty from Glasgow. The distance runs from 3,068 to 3,281 nautical miles depending on the British field, measured with an allowance for the routing, which is beyond what a light or midsize jet flies in one go. The UAE keeps the same clock all year, four hours ahead of Greenwich with no seasonal change, so the gap to Britain is four hours in winter and three in summer. The table gives the sector from each British field we use, flown nonstop in an Embraer Praetor 600 into Sharjah International.

Door to door, and why the late departure works

Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning and the wheels touch at Sharjah in the evening, in time for a late dinner. The airport lies about 13 km east-south-east of Sharjah city, and a handler's guide puts central Dubai about 25 minutes away by road, while the operator of the terminal quotes 30 to 40 minutes, which is the figure to plan with once the evening traffic builds. Because Sharjah asks for no slot, the departure time from the UAE is yours to set, including a late one: the airport is listed as open round the clock. Heading home, a ten o'clock start lands in Britain in the early afternoon, and an evening start arrives in the small hours.

Routes, permits and conditions: what we check before every quote

Landing permission in the UAE is handled emirate by emirate, and Sharjah has its own. A flight-support guide asks for at least four working days of notice, describes the permit as valid for 72 hours, and lists the standard aircraft, insurance and licence papers plus an ACAS II (version 7.0) certificate for Sharjah. The way there crosses several states, and the operator picks the corridor according to overflight permissions, the weather and conditions in the region, which can change the routing, the fuel plan and the insurance terms at short notice. So a Sharjah quote stays conditional with us until the operator has confirmed the route, the permits and the arrival arrangements in writing. Read the FCDO travel advice for the UAE before you commit, and tell your own insurer where you are going. Should anything move between booking and departure, the cancellation and rerouting terms in the offer matter more than the headline number.

Which cabin for a seven-hour sector

– A super-midsize jet with real range is the floor. The Embraer Praetor 600 is published at about 4,018 nautical miles with four passengers and standard reserves, so the longest sector in the table, 3,281 nautical miles from Glasgow, sits well inside it. With a full cabin the usable range is shorter than that figure, and the operator confirms the fuel plan for your passenger count before the offer is final;

– Shorter-range super-midsize jets, the Challenger 350 among them, normally need a fuel stop on this run, and light and midsize jets always do. A stop adds about an hour, a second set of fees and a second set of permits, which erases most of the saving on the hourly rate. That is why this page prices the nonstop option;

– Past eight passengers, or when the party wants to sleep and work in the air, we quote a large-cabin or long-range jet beside the Praetor. A Global 6000 out of Biggin Hill comes to £84,650 and flies the sector in about 6 h 35 min, about 35 minutes quicker than the Praetor. The Gulfstream G450, G550 and G650 family are the usual alternatives for the bed on the way back.

Distance is the smaller part of this bill. A Praetor 600 out of Biggin Hill is £48,750; the same aircraft out of Glasgow is £51,950, which is £3,200 more for roughly 25 extra minutes in the air. What moves the figure far more is the choice of cabin, and a round trip with the aircraft waiting at Sharjah is priced differently from two single legs. We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. Sharjah sits in the middle of a busy short-haul map. Abu Dhabi's executive airport is 82 nautical miles away, Muscat and Doha are about an hour in a light or midsize jet, Bahrain a little more, and Mumbai is an afternoon. The Maldives are the long winter-sun leg, and Istanbul is the way back towards Europe. Typical one-way prices:

Short legs from Sharjah: the flying is the easy part

Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen is 82 nautical miles away and Muscat 191, which is about 35 minutes and 50 minutes in the air. Doha lies 221 nautical miles away and Bahrain 280. Each state issues its own landing permission, so a leg that looks like a hop on the map needs notice on paper, and the flight within the UAE needs its own permit from the emirate you are landing in. Do not accept a quote that names an airport without naming the handler and the status of the permit. For most parties a light or midsize cabin is the sensible choice on these legs, since the money should go on the hour and not on range you will not use.

Before you accept an onward quote from Sharjah

– Which airport the quote starts from. Sharjah, Dubai International and Al Maktoum are three different fields, and a driver told only Dubai may wait at the wrong one. We name the airport and the handler in the offer, never just the emirate;

– Whether the aircraft is yours for the whole trip. Sharjah, Muscat and back over a long weekend costs less arranged as a single booking, because the crew stays with you and the aircraft does not reposition between stops;

– What the dates do to the permit. In the weeks of the book fair or a major Dubai exhibition the lead time on an onward leg tightens, so we ask for the permit status in writing before pricing a leg that falls on a peak date.

Super-midsize, the working choice from Britain

This is a small part of what is available. Sharjah has a large hangar and a line-maintenance operation next to the business aviation terminal, so business jets are regularly on the field, and for a booking outside the busiest weeks there is sometimes an aircraft already in the Emirates, which is occasionally where the better price comes from. For the flight out from Britain, though, the aircraft usually comes from a European base, and the positioning is part of the quote.

Business aviation airports around Sharjah

Three airports are in play for a party that is going to Sharjah or Dubai, and a fourth sits in the capital. Which one goes in the quote decides how much of the first hour is spent in a car.

Airport What it gives you
Sharjah International
SHJ / OMSJ
The answer for most private trips to the northern Emirates. About 13 km east-south-east of Sharjah city, open round the clock, with a single runway of about 4,060 m, customs on the field, no slot requirement and mandatory handling. Gama Aviation runs the dedicated terminal: two storeys, immigration and customs on site, lounges, crew rooms with showers, catering on demand at any hour, a large hangar and a landside helipad, and passengers can be driven to the aircraft airside by arrangement. The airport website also lists Universal Aviation as a handler, so we name the handler in each offer. The airfield goes back to the early 1930s, when it served as a stopover on the air route to India
Dubai International
DXB / OMDB
About 17 km from Sharjah in a straight line and Dubai's main field. Listed as a slot-coordinated airport with handling mandatory and parking restricted for visitors; the private terminals are run by Jet Aviation and ExecuJet. It is the right choice when the meeting is next to the airport and the slot can be secured in time. Otherwise it is the harder of the two to arrange
Al Maktoum International
DWC / OMDW
The second Dubai airport, about 60 km south-west of Sharjah in a straight line, with a runway of about 4,500 m, round-the-clock customs and no curfew. Handlers list it as generally unrestricted for business aviation, with several private terminals: Jetex, Jet Aviation, ExecuJet, DC Aviation Al-Futtaim and Falcon Aviation. It makes sense for Dubai Marina, the Palm and Dubai South, and much less for Sharjah
Abu Dhabi Al Bateen
AZI / OMAD
The executive airport of the capital, 82 nautical miles from Sharjah and close to the city. It matters for clients who combine the two emirates, and a flight there needs its own landing permission

Four points settle most Sharjah arrivals:

Choose the airport and the terminal

For a stay in Sharjah or the northern Emirates, land at Sharjah International and use the Gama terminal. For Dubai the question is distance against slots: Sharjah is about 25 to 40 minutes from central Dubai, Dubai International is closer but needs a slot, and Al Maktoum is further out. Tell us where the car and the meetings are, and we name the airport and the handler in the offer.

Hours, slots and permits

Sharjah is listed as open round the clock and as an airport of entry that needs no slot, though handling is mandatory. The landing permit is requested from the emirate, with at least four working days of notice quoted by handlers, and a permit is valid for a window of 72 hours. Sharjah's public offices work Monday to Thursday with Friday to Sunday off, which is worth remembering when a meeting involves a government body.

Border and passport

British citizens get a free visitor visa on arrival for up to 90 days in any 180. The passport must be valid for at least six months from the day you arrive. Immigration and customs are inside the Gama terminal, so the formalities are done beside the aircraft and not in a queue in the main hall.

Car and the road

The airport is about 13 km from Sharjah city and roughly 25 to 40 minutes from central Dubai, depending on the hour. Private vehicles can be arranged airside, so give us the hotel and the meeting address as well as the airport, and we brief the driver for the terminal door.

Border, visa and what Sharjah expects of a visitor

A British passport holder does not apply for anything in advance: the visitor visa is issued on arrival without charge and covers up to 90 days within a 180-day period, provided the passport has six months left. Working on a visitor visa can bring a fine, a prison sentence or deportation, so a team that is going to do paid work needs the right permit first. Medicines are the item that surprises people most. Anything classed as narcotic, psychotropic or controlled needs approval from the Ministry of Health before you travel, applications are usually processed within five working days, and a visitor may carry up to a three-month supply. Sharjah then adds rules of its own. It is a dry emirate, with no alcohol on sale even in international hotels, and modest dress is expected in public places, so the evening plans of a party used to Dubai need a second look. On the way home Britain applies its own rule for private flights: the General Aviation Report is filed no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure, and we file it for you.

From the apron to the Heart of Sharjah

Sharjah has built its name on culture, to the point of being named a UNESCO World Book Capital, and its visitor sights cluster close together: Khalid Lagoon with its island, the mosque and the Al Qasba canal, and the restored old quarter a short drive away. Nothing a visitor wants is far from anything else, so the airport is a short transfer to either.

Sharjah International to Sharjah city
about 13 km from the field, with the lagoon, the waterfront and the old quarter close together
a short drive
Sharjah International to central Dubai
roughly 15 to 20 km by road, which is why a Dubai-bound party can still land here
25 to 40 minutes
Terminal to Downtown Dubai by helicopter
from the landside helipad at the Gama terminal, subject to permission
about 5 minutes
Sharjah city to Khor Fakkan
about 90 km of road to the Sharjah town on the Gulf of Oman coast
about 45 minutes
Sharjah city to Mleiha
about 60 to 70 km east of the city, near Fossil Rock
typically about an hour

The old town on foot: Heart of Sharjah, the souq and the museums

The Heart of Sharjah is the restored historic district, with merchant houses, narrow lanes and the fort within walking distance. Souq Al Arsah is the place for old silver, daggers, shawls and Omani jewellery. The Museum of Islamic Civilization occupies a repurposed souq and holds more than 5,000 objects across galleries of Islamic art and of science and faith, with a dome on the top floor painted as a night sky. The Arts Area next to it centres on the Sharjah Art Museum, Bait Al Shamsi and the Emirates Fine Arts Society, all in restored merchant houses, and the Sharjah Art Foundation spreads its exhibitions through the same streets. A half day covers the main sights, and it suits the afternoon after landing.

On the water: Al Noor Island and Al Qasba

Al Noor Island sits in Khalid Lagoon beside the Al Noor Mosque, reached by a footbridge, and was laid out by the artist Andre Heller with meadows, art installations, a Butterfly House, a literature pavilion and a cafe. The island opens in the morning and stays open until late evening, and the lit walkways are best after dark. Al Qasba, a short way along the water, is a canal with cafes, boat rides, the Maraya Art Centre and a theatre, and Al Majaz Waterfront has gardens and dancing fountains at night. All of it is family-friendly and none of it serves alcohol.

Beyond the city: day trips that suit a private schedule

– Khor Fakkan, on the Gulf of Oman. This is a Sharjah town on the east coast, surrounded by Fujairah. The corniche runs for about 2.5 km, a 45 m waterfall is lit at night, the Hisn Khor Fakkan museum replicates the nearby fort, and Shark Island is a snorkelling and diving spot. Expect 45 minutes to an hour on the road each way, so it is a long day with a car and driver;

– Mleiha, in the desert. An archaeological centre with Bronze and Iron Age finds and a coin mould from the era of Alexander the Great sits beside Fossil Rock, limestone with marine fossils about 70 million years old. Stone tools from the Jebel Faya cave are over 125,000 years old. Stargazing, hiking and desert driving fill the afternoon, and the hours before sunset are the best;

– A helicopter hop to Dubai for dinner or a meeting, with the evening spent back in Sharjah or on the aircraft. It is a luxury and not a necessity, since the road is manageable, but it takes the road out of the schedule.

Flying to Sharjah with a dog or a cat

The UAE lets pets in, but not casually, and the UK side of the paperwork is as long as the Emirates side. An import permit comes from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment before travel, the animal needs an export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian, and the order of microchip, vaccination and permit matters. On a charter the animal can often travel in the cabin with you, which is why owners choose a private jet over a cargo hold, but the UAE end has to allow it, so we confirm the arrangement in writing.

private flight with animals

What the UAE typically asks for when a dog or cat arrives from Britain:

  • An import permit from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, applied for online once the flight date is fixed, with a validity of about 30 days;
  • An ISO microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination, with the same number on every document;
  • A first rabies vaccination given more than 21 days before export, and the latest one within 12 months of export, with a licensed product and the certificate travelling with the animal;
  • An export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian, based on the government template for dogs and cats going from Great Britain to the UAE;
  • No entry for banned breeds, including pit bull types and mastiff types and their crosses, and a limit of two pets per person in a year.

What catches owners out on the Sharjah run

– Airline rules and private-flight rules are different. The UAE guidance describes pets as arriving on airlines as manifested cargo and not in the cabin, and it says nothing about a chartered private aircraft. We confirm in writing, before the offer is accepted, how the animal enters on your flight and through which airport;

– The breed rule works by appearance. A dog that looks like a banned type can be refused even with correct papers, so a crossbreed of uncertain parentage needs a conversation with the authority beforehand, not at the gate;

– The way home is its own project. For the return Britain asks for a Great Britain pet health certificate for the UAE, a microchip, rabies vaccination at least 21 days old, a declaration, and for dogs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival. Cats need no tapeworm treatment. Dates for the vet visit are counted from the landing time in Britain.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Sharjah calendar: culture in winter, books in November

Sharjah has a long season and a short summer lull. From October to April the weather suits the outdoors and the cultural calendar is full, and from June to September heat shapes the day. The date you pick affects the plan more than the aircraft does.

October
The exhibition season in Dubai opens, and the technology show GITEX is usually held this month. When Dubai fills up, a field with no slot requirement becomes more useful, and so does booking the aircraft and the permit early
November
Sharjah International Book Fair, about twelve days at the Expo Centre Sharjah, which has run for more than 45 years, with a guest of honour country each time, programmes for children and a professional programme for publishers. The Dubai Airshow, held every second year, and the Gulfood Manufacturing show fall in the same month
December and January
Winter high season. The Islamic Arts Festival at the Sharjah Art Museum has run into late January, Dubai holds its Shopping Festival in December, and Arab Health and the Big 5 construction show come in January and December. Cars, hotel rooms and parking positions all tighten at once
February
The Sharjah Light Festival, usually in this month and lasting around ten to twelve days, projects light shows on the Al Noor Mosque, Al Majaz Waterfront, Khalid Lagoon and further afield, with a Light Village. Dubai's Gulfood show also falls here
March to May
Sharjah Heritage Days, held for about three weeks in the Heart of Sharjah, with guest countries and crafts. The Sharjah Biennial opens every second year and runs through to June. The Children's Reading Festival fills the Expo Centre in late April and early May. Ramadan moves back by about eleven days each year, working hours change during the month, and we check where it falls before pricing
June to September
Long, hot and humid, and the quietest part of the year for leisure travel. Early or late flights are kinder to passengers and crews, and indoor museums and the lagoon at night carry the programme

Why November and the exhibition weeks cost more

Not the flying. The Gulf has plenty of aircraft. What tightens is hotel rooms, good cars, parking positions and permit lead times, all in the same few days, and Sharjah's lack of slots takes only one of those constraints away. A booking made two weeks before the book fair can still be done, but it pays more and may use an aircraft positioned from Europe or from elsewhere in the Gulf. The same booking made two months earlier is simpler and cheaper. In the long weeks around the exhibitions Sharjah International is the field with the fewest constraints, and in summer almost any date is easy.

Ways to bring the Sharjah price down

  • Move the dates by a few days, away from the book fair and from Dubai's exhibition weeks. The weeks in between are calmer, the cars are easier to find and the permits are quicker to arrange;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet already in the Emirates, in Muscat or in Doha needs less positioning than one coming out from Britain, and on a sector this long positioning is a large share of the bill;
  • Choose the cabin for the sector. A super-midsize jet flies the route without a stop, while a smaller one adds a fuel stop, so the cheaper hourly rate is not always the cheaper trip;
  • Use the absence of slots. Sharjah lets the aircraft depart when the meeting ends, which can save a night of waiting and positioning, and the round trip with the aircraft kept at Sharjah is priced differently from two single flights.

Types of flights

Sharjah has its own mix, shaped by a large resident community, a publishing and arts sector, and a position next to Dubai that offers a way round Dubai's congestion. It differs from the European destinations we cover.

  • Business trips to Dubai that avoid the slot and parking constraints of Dubai International and keep the departure time flexible;
  • Cultural and delegation travel around the book fair, the biennial and the heritage festivals, where the dates are set by the event;
  • Family travel to relatives in the Emirates, since most of the emirate's population is expatriate, with a flexible schedule for the return;
  • Winter breaks combining Sharjah's museums with the beaches on the Gulf of Oman at Khor Fakkan;
  • Gulf and Indian Ocean hops to Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Bahrain, Mumbai and the Maldives;
  • Maintenance and positioning flights, when an aircraft goes to the hangar at Sharjah and a client travels on the leg that was going that way anyway.

A same-day return from London is not a practical plan on this route. The aircraft and crew would spend most of a day in the air and the working window in Sharjah would be short. A better pattern is to leave in the morning, spend a night or two on the ground and fly back with the aircraft waiting, which we quote beside two separate one-way flights so the difference is visible.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Sharjah corridor they come from the pattern of events and from the movement of aircraft in and out of the Emirates, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Sharjah empty legs come from

– Event weeks. When guests fly in for the book fair or a Dubai exhibition on charters, the aircraft often leave empty a day or two later, which produces legs towards Britain and Europe in the days after;

– Hangar and maintenance visits. Sharjah has a large hangar and a line-maintenance operation beside the business aviation terminal, and an aircraft that has been in for a check may leave for its home base without passengers;

– Gulf rotation. Aircraft that fly a party to Sharjah from Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha or Bahrain often return empty, and the short regional legs between those places can be cheap.

Because the long sector between Britain and the Emirates is flown less often than a European city pair, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Sharjah match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

At Sharjah a helicopter is mainly a way of reaching Dubai. The business aviation terminal has a dedicated landside helipad, and the operator of the terminal describes Downtown Dubai as about five minutes away by air, against a road transfer that depends on the hour. Dubai has local helicopter operators that list private charter, among them HeliDubai and Falcon Executive Aviation, which runs a helipark near Al Maktoum. HeliDubai's published destination list names Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman rather than Sharjah, so the sites for a Sharjah job are agreed case by case.

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. Each pick-up and set-down point needs approval from the operator and the aviation authority, and a route can change at short notice, so the exact sites are agreed before we quote, not after;

– Notice matters. One Dubai operator asks for at least 48 hours, a government ID for each passenger and declared passenger and baggage weights, and baggage space is limited, so a party with large suitcases needs a plan for the luggage;

– We choose the machine for the party and the task and book it together with the jet, to keep both crews on one timetable.

We do not publish a fixed helicopter fleet list for the Emirates, because the aircraft that are available change with the operator and the task. Tell us the sites and the number of passengers, and we come back with the machine, the price and the permission status in one reply.

Sharjah charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

PUBLISHING · THE BOOK FAIR WEEK

A small delegation for the November fair

Farnborough - Sharjah, Praetor 600, about 7 h 15 min · 6 pax

The dates were set by the fair, not by the client. Six people, boxes of printed samples and a request for a car at the terminal door. The operator confirmed the landing permit in writing, the handler filed the passenger list ahead of the flight, and the return was booked as a separate leg for the end of the week.

DUBAI MEETINGS · NO SLOT TO CHASE

An executive who wanted to leave when the meeting ended

London Stansted - Sharjah, Global 6000, about 6 h 35 min · 4 pax

The meetings were in Dubai and ran late, and a slot at Dubai International was not available at the hour needed. Landing at Sharjah removed the problem, the car did the 30 minutes or so to the hotel, and the aircraft left at midnight on its own timetable.

WINTER BREAK · FAMILY AND RELATIVES

Four adults and two children for two weeks

London Luton - Sharjah, Praetor 600, about 7 h 15 min · 6 pax

The family stayed with relatives and went out to the east coast for a few days. The aircraft was released for the fortnight and the return was booked in advance, which came in below two separate one-way charters.

A DOG ON BOARD · MONTHS OF PREPARATION

Two adults and a spaniel on a long stay

Southampton - Sharjah, Praetor 600, about 7 h 15 min · 2 pax + dog

The paperwork took longer than the flight. The microchip, the vaccination, the Official Veterinarian certificate and the import permit were sorted months ahead, and we confirmed the entry point and the cabin arrangement in writing before the offer was accepted.

ART TRAVEL · THE BIENNIAL OPENING

Two collectors and a curator for the opening week

London Luton - Sharjah, Praetor 600, about 7 h 15 min · 3 pax

The party wanted to see the Heart of Sharjah galleries and the Arts Area on the first day and fly on to Muscat on the second. We booked the onward leg as part of the same itinerary and requested the landing permit for both states on the same day.

EMPTY LEG · A JET ALREADY GOING YOUR WAY

Sharjah back to Britain after a maintenance visit

Sharjah - London Luton, Praetor 600 empty leg, about 7 h 15 min · 4 pax

The aircraft had been in the hangar at Sharjah for a check and was returning to its base without passengers. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for the long sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Sharjah

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Sharjah?

About seven hours ten from Biggin Hill or Stansted (3,068 nautical miles from Stansted) and seven hours 15 minutes from Luton, Farnborough or Southampton in a Praetor 600. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about seven hours 20 to 25 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow about seven hours 35 to 40 minutes. The UAE is four hours ahead of Greenwich with no seasonal change, so a nine o'clock departure lands in the evening local time.

2How much does a private jet to Sharjah cost?

From about £48,750 one way in a super-midsize jet out of Biggin Hill. Luton comes to £49,100, Birmingham to £49,950, Manchester to £50,400 and Glasgow to £51,950. A large-cabin or long-range jet costs considerably more, a Global 6000 from Biggin Hill being £84,650, and the November book fair, the weeks of Dubai's exhibitions and the winter season price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for Sharjah and Dubai?

Sharjah International (SHJ / OMSJ), about 13 km from Sharjah city and 25 to 40 minutes by road from central Dubai, open round the clock, with a runway of about 4,060 m, no slot requirement and customs and immigration inside the Gama Aviation terminal. Dubai International (DXB / OMDB) is closer to the centre of Dubai but is slot-coordinated, and Al Maktoum (DWC / OMDW) is a long drive south-west. We confirm the field and the handler in writing for each flight.

4Do I need a visa to fly to Sharjah?

British citizens get a free visitor visa on arrival, valid for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the passport must be valid for at least six months from the day of arrival. Working on a visitor visa is not allowed. Controlled medicines need approval from the Ministry of Health in advance, and Sharjah is a dry emirate where alcohol is not sold, even in hotels.

5Can I take my dog to Sharjah on a private jet?

Possibly, and on a charter the dog can often travel in the cabin with you if the UAE end allows it, but the paperwork starts months ahead. The UAE typically asks for an import permit, an ISO microchip, a first rabies vaccination more than 21 days before export and an export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian, and it bans some breeds. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing, and we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

6What should I check about routing and permits before I book?

Ask the operator for its planned route and any technical stop, whether its insurers cover the route, the status of the landing permit for Sharjah, and the cancellation and rerouting terms. Handlers quote at least four working days of notice for a UAE landing permit. Airspace and security conditions in the region can change the routing, the crews available and the insurance terms, sometimes at short notice, so we treat a quote as conditional until the operator confirms in writing. We also suggest reading the FCDO travel advice for the UAE and telling your own insurer where you are going.
