Private jet charter in Porto-Vecchio

Porto-Vecchio sits a little over two hours from the London fields and has no airport of its own: every charter lands at Figari, about 25 km to the south-west, a field that is slot-controlled for much of the year and, by its own account, the largest on the island for business aviation movements. Private Jets UK plans the flight from that airfield backwards. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The 2,480 m runway is long enough for anything from a light jet to a Gulfstream, so the aircraft is rarely the problem. The slot, the stand and the summer calendar are. Bonifacio, the Sperone golf course, Santa Giulia, Palombaggia and the marina of Porto-Vecchio all lie within an hour of the apron.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Porto-Vecchio depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Porto-Vecchio?

About 2 hours 5 minutes from Biggin Hill in a Citation CJ3+, 2 hours 40 minutes from Edinburgh in a Challenger, and an hour added to the clock on arrival, because Corsica keeps Paris time all year. The British fields we use lie 726 to 1,052 nautical miles from Figari, so the south of England is comfortable light-jet distance and Scotland is a job for a bigger cabin. Every sector is nonstop. A light jet has the range with a wide margin, and in the published aerodrome data we found no weight or seat limit for business aircraft on the 2,480 m runway.

Door to door: a morning departure and lunch in the old town

Take off from Biggin Hill at seven and you land at Figari just after ten local time. A car can then have you at the Place de la République in Porto-Vecchio, about 25 km away, or on the quay at Bonifacio, 22 km away, by about eleven. The French aeronautical information puts customs and border police on duty from early morning, so a morning arrival falls well inside their hours. What decides the day is not the clock but the request: customs and police work only on 48 hours' notice, the handler must ask for a slot in the summer months, and the aircraft needs a stand.

Which aircraft suits the Figari run

– Up to six people with the luggage of a villa week, a Citation CJ3+ is the usual quote and the basis of the price at the top of this page. The sector is 2 hours 5 minutes from the south of England, the cabin takes golf bags, and the runway asks nothing special of it. A Citation M2 is possible for a party of four and about £650 cheaper, with a smaller cabin and hold, so we offer it when asked;

– Seven to nine passengers, or a family with children and a nanny, call for a Phenom 300E, an XLS+ or a Latitude. From Biggin Hill the XLS+ is priced about £2,450 above the CJ3+. The extra money buys a larger cabin and a bigger baggage hold, which matters more on a sector of two hours and more than the brochure suggests;

– Ten or more passengers bring in a Challenger, a Falcon or a Gulfstream. The usable landing length of 2,420 m suits them, and the field has a category 7 fire service. The limit is the stand: only four general aviation stands, numbers 21 to 24, carry a high strength rating in the published data, so a large cabin is agreed with the handler in advance and often drops its party and repositions to a quieter field.

Private jet flights from Porto-Vecchio

Figari is a base for the short crossings that southern Corsica generates: to the other Corsican airports, over the strait to Sardinia, and out to the Riviera, Provence and northern Italy. Olbia and Ajaccio are about half an hour away by turboprop, Bastia and Calvi a little more, and Nice, Cannes and Rome just under an hour. Typical one-way prices:

Onward from Figari: where the aircraft beats the road

The far south has few fast roads, and the road north is slow. Ajaccio is 30 nautical miles away and about 30 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, against a drive that brokers put at about two hours twenty. Bastia is 68 nautical miles and Calvi 66, each about 35 minutes in the air and much more on the ground. Olbia is only 43 nautical miles across the strait, about 30 minutes by turboprop, which is why a Sardinian airport is often the other half of a Corsican plan. A yacht in the Maddalena islands or at Porto Cervo is a short hop from Figari, once the French and Italian handlers have agreed the slots.

Before you accept an onward quote from Figari

– The operator. A British operator flies London to Figari in the ordinary way, but a hop from Figari to Ajaccio or Bastia stays inside France, and such flights are normally left to French or EU operators. We confirm what the aircraft may carry before the price is sent;

– One booking or two. Flying into Figari, crossing to Olbia for the Costa Smeralda and going home from there is cheaper as a single itinerary, because the aircraft is positioned once and does not return to base in between;

– The slot at the far end. A summer departure from Figari needs a slot as much as an arrival does, so a second leg is quoted together with the first and is not added at the last minute.

Light jets, the usual way into Figari

The Citation M2, the HondaJet Elite and the CJ3+ cover the two-hour crossing from the south of England without difficulty and land comfortably on 2,420 m of usable runway. They are also the easiest class to place on a stand in July, because they take the least room on the apron, and most weekend and villa charters to Porto-Vecchio are flown in this class.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h

Midsize and super-midsize

The Phenom 300E, the CJ4, the XLS+ and the Latitude give seven to nine people room for villa luggage and dive bags. From Scotland and the north of England they are the realistic choice, with the space that a sector of more than two and a half hours asks for.

Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Large cabins

The Challenger 350 and 605, the Falcon 2000LXS and the bigger Gulfstreams fit the runway with room to spare. At Figari the question is where they stand, how long they stay and where they go while the party is ashore, and those answers are agreed with the handler before the aircraft is confirmed.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The Pilatus PC-12 NGX and the King Air 350 suit the hops between island airports and the crossing to Olbia, where over distances of thirty to seventy nautical miles a turboprop saves a large share of the cost of a jet.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

For the final stretch, not the flight from Britain: a cove with no road, a villa on a headland, Cavallo, or the Bavella needles seen from above. The landing site is settled before the quote is issued.

This is a small part of what is available. Figari is at the end of the island, so an aircraft is often positioned from Nice, Olbia or Ajaccio, and where it starts shapes the price about as much as the model does.

Business aviation airports in Porto-Vecchio

There is one airport that matters for this town and two that serve as fallbacks. Porto-Vecchio itself has only a helistation, and the nearest runway is Figari. The others earn their place when the slot, the stand or the hour does not work.

Airport What it gives you
Figari Sud-Corse
FSC / LFKF
The airport for Porto-Vecchio, Bonifacio, Santa Giulia, Palombaggia and the Alta Rocca, about 25 km south-west of Porto-Vecchio and about 22 km from Bonifacio, at 85 ft above the sea. Runway 05/23 is 2,480 m by 45 m with 2,420 m available for landing in both directions. Runway 23 has an ILS, while runway 05 is flown on a VOR or RNP procedure, and the approach to 05 is turbulent in every wind. The fire service is category 7, Jet A1 and 100LL are sold, and the airport has a dedicated business aviation terminal. In the summer it is a coordinated airport where IFR flights need a slot, and general aviation needs prior permission from the operator. Choose it for every programme on the south-east and south coasts
Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte
AJA / LFKJ
The fallback on the west side when Figari has no slot or no stand, about 2 h 20 min from Figari by road according to broker guides. The 2,300 m runway has an ILS on runway 02, and customs and police are listed on duty round the clock for business flights notified 48 hours ahead, which makes it the better choice for a late arrival. Count the long drive into the plan, or fly the last stretch by turboprop or helicopter
Olbia Costa Smeralda
OLB / LIEO
The Italian alternative across the strait, with a 2,745 m runway, a business aviation terminal run by Eccelsa and summer coordination of its own. It is the sensible gateway when the programme starts with a yacht in the Maddalena archipelago or a stay on the Costa Smeralda and only touches Corsica for a few days. The sea crossing from Santa Teresa Gallura to Bonifacio takes about 50 minutes on the Moby Lines ferry, which keeps animals on the outer decks
Bastia and Calvi
BIA / LFKB and CLY / LFKC
Both lie on the far side of the island, 126 km and 122 km from Figari in a straight line and much farther by road. They belong to a northern programme and do nothing for a plan centred on Porto-Vecchio

Four practical points to settle before the landing:

The handler and the services

SCALA Handling is the handler named in the French aeronautical information for general and business aviation. General aviation fuel is sold only against prior permission from the airport operator, so the order goes in with the permission request and not on the day. A broker guide to southern France calls the services limited and advises asking for everything in advance. We order the car, the catering and the fuel through the handler.

Hours, permission and slots

The French information prints its times in UTC. Local time is UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer, and the printed note moves the summer hours one hour earlier in UTC, so on the clock in Corsica the hours stay the same all year: customs 05:00 to 17:00, border police for international flights 05:00 to 16:00 and fuel 05:00 to 21:00, with an extension if the departure is planned later. Customs and police need 48 hours' notice. From late March to late October Figari is a coordinated airport, slots are given only between 06:45 and 22:59 local time, and for business aviation the handler requests them from the coordinator. Published hours differ between sources, so the handler confirms them for your date.

Border and passport

France is in Schengen and Britain is not, so Figari is where passports are checked on the way in. A broker guide places the border post in the main terminal building, and we confirm where your party walks. A British visitor needs no visa for a stay of up to 90 days in any 180, and the passport must be under ten years old with three months left after the planned departure. The EU entry system may ask a first-time visitor for a photograph and fingerprints at the desk.

Car, harbour and the road

Tell us the terminal as well as the flight, so the driver waits where you come out. The airport data list taxis, car hire and a summer bus to Porto-Vecchio. From the apron, Porto-Vecchio is typically 25 to 30 minutes, Bonifacio about the same, and the beaches of the gulf add another quarter of an hour. If the destination is a yacht, give us the berth and the harbour office hours, because a quay in a busy harbour is not always open to cars and the party may have to walk the last stretch.

business aviation

The summer peak: slots, stands and what the airport cannot take

Figari was designed for about 500,000 passengers a year and has handled close to 900,000 in a busy year, most of them between spring and autumn. The runway arrival limits are set higher for the peak that runs from early June to late September, and from late March to early November about ten more airlines add flights to the year-round ones. Business aviation arrives on top of that, and the airport's own history calls it the largest on the island for business aviation movements. A weekend in July is therefore the hardest booking of the year, and a midweek day in September is the easiest.

What limits a private jet at Figari in summer

– The slot. From late March to late October IFR flights need a slot, and the business aviation request goes through the handler. The slot identifier travels in the flight plan, and a flight without one can be suspended by Eurocontrol. Slots are given only between 06:45 and 22:59 local time, so a late-evening IFR arrival cannot be slotted;

– The stand. In the published data, stands 21 to 24 on the general aviation apron carry a strength rating of 52, and the other general aviation stands are rated 15, which is a light-aircraft figure. A broker guide to the region adds that parking needs permission at least 24 hours ahead, that a turn of about an hour is the longest typically approved and that overnight parking is not available. We check the position with the handler for your aircraft and date;

– The wind. The approach to runway 05 is turbulent in every wind, runway 23 can bring strong turbulence and wind shear in medium to strong west and north-west winds, and the AIP says not to start that approach above 25 knots gusting 35. The crosswind limit on a wet runway is 20 knots. When the wind is up, a plan with a second airport in reserve costs little and saves a lot.

The practical answer is the drop-and-go. The aircraft lands, the party goes to the car, and the jet repositions to Ajaccio, Olbia or Nice and returns for the departure. It is a normal way to fly this corridor in July and August, and it is priced as positioning, so the quote shows it instead of leaving it for the invoice.

Border, passport and flights inside France

The formalities happen at the first landing in the Schengen area, and on this route that is Figari. We send the passenger details to the handler with the permission request, and the 48 hours of notice that customs and police ask for sets the shortest realistic lead time. After that, Corsica is simply France: a later leg to Nice, Marseille or Paris is a domestic flight, and a hop to Olbia is a flight inside Schengen. A temporary border control can still be introduced at short notice, so keep the passports to hand. The way home to Britain needs a General Aviation Report, filed between 48 hours and 2 hours before departure.

From the apron to the old town

Porto-Vecchio is a town of about eleven thousand people that swells to something like fifty thousand in summer, mostly with visitors from Italy. The Genoese founded it in the sixteenth century on a hill about 70 m above the gulf, and malaria from the salt marsh on the plain below killed most of the first settlers. The salt pans are idle now, and cork was a local trade for much longer. The old town is small. Trapezoidal walls enclose the Place de la République, beside the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and a bastion stands at the edge of the hill. Narrow streets run off the square into restaurants and shops, many of which close in winter. The marina lies at the foot of the hill, along the water.

Palombaggia, Santa Giulia, Rondinara and Cala Rossa

Four beaches account for most of the reputation. Palombaggia is the famous one: several coves of fine white sand under umbrella pines, separated by red rocks that are good for snorkelling, with a large dirt car park that fills early in summer and a few beach restaurants that offer paid parking of their own. Tamaricciu, its twin, is a little quieter. Santa Giulia lies in a sheltered bay with shallow, clear water, where a strip of sand separates the sea from a lagoon, and it is very busy in summer. Rondinara, between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio, has sheltered coves of shallow turquoise water and a car park that charges a fee. Cala Rossa, on the Benedettu peninsula north of the gulf, has granite rocks, a long narrow strip of fine sand and views back over the water, and neighbouring Tramulimacchia is the family cove. Lifeguards and restaurants operate in season.

How a gulf day usually runs

– Land, drop the bags and be at a beach restaurant at Santa Giulia or Palombaggia for a late lunch, before the afternoon wind rises;

– A second day by boat or car to Rondinara and Bonifacio, which keeps the long drive for the morning and leaves the evening free for the old town;

– A third on the water, or at the Sperone course, with a dinner above the marina in Porto-Vecchio.

Bonifacio, the limestone cliffs and the Lavezzi islands

Bonifacio is the reason many people choose Figari, and it deserves the trip. The town stands on a limestone peninsula, and its houses perch on the edge of the pale cliffs. The upper town, about 70 m above the water, is closed by ramparts and an old fortress, with narrow cobbled streets that open without warning on sea views, and the King of Aragon's staircase, 187 steps cut into the rock, drops to the sea. The harbour lies at the head of a deep inlet, and its yachts can be seen from the north side of the old town. About 120 km of coastline around Bonifacio belongs to the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve. Sardinia lies across the strait, which is one of the windiest stretches of the western Mediterranean, and strong east or west winds can fill the harbour with boats waiting for a gap. Mornings and late afternoons are quieter than the middle of the day, and a boat trip under the cliffs and past the sea caves is worth an hour of it.

The Lavezzi islands lie about six miles east of Bonifacio, an archipelago of granite rocks and shallow turquoise water that is part of the reserve. A shuttle leaves the port hourly from half past nine in the peak season and reaches Lavezzu in about 30 minutes, on a first-come basis and without advance booking, while full-day cruises are booked ahead and also leave from Porto-Vecchio. On the island you walk the marked paths only. There are no restaurants, toilets or drinking water, and picking plants, fishing and bringing animals are prohibited. The Sémillante, a French troopship, broke up on the rocks with 773 men aboard and no survivors, and a memorial pyramid and two cemeteries mark the place.

Cavallo and the golf at Sperone

Cavallo, the only inhabited island of the archipelago, is privately owned, with houses designed by the architect Jacques Couelle, and landing is allowed only to owners, tenants, hotel guests and their invited friends. Unauthorised boats may not land, and boats may not anchor outside its small marina. The island has one hotel, the five-star Hôtel des Pêcheurs, open from May to September, and a ferry runs from Piantarella on the Corsican shore. The hotel does not accept pets. Helicopters can reach the island from Figari or Olbia, though the landing is arranged with the island, not assumed. Everyone else sees Cavallo from a passing boat.

The Sperone golf course, a few kilometres from Bonifacio on the southernmost tip of Corsica, is an 18-hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., par 72, with cliff-top holes that look over the Lavezzi islands, Cavallo and Sardinia. The par-5 sixteenth tees off from the island's southern tip and is the signature hole. Visitors are accepted every day of the week, with advance booking and a handicap certificate, and the course is walked unless a buggy is hired. We ask the club for starting times as soon as the aircraft is confirmed, because they have to be booked in advance.

Bavella, the Alta Rocca and the Restonica

The mountains rise inland of the gulf, and they are the answer to a beach week that has run out of days. The Aiguilles de Bavella are a set of granite needles above a pass of the same name, on the last stage of the GR20 before the refuge at Conca, and access is regulated in summer because of the crowds. A pilgrimage to Notre-Dame-des-Neiges takes place at the pass on 5 August. The village of Zonza, the crossroads of the Alta Rocca, looks up at the needles; the road from Porto-Vecchio is mountainous and takes an hour or more. The Alta Rocca, a region of 16 villages whose highest point is the Alcudina at 2,134 m, is the richest ground for a day by car with a driver. Levie has the museum of the Alta Rocca and, on the plateau above it, the archaeological sites of Cucuruzzu and Capula, and holds its medieval festival in September. Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano is known for its orbicular diorite and its olive oil, Quenza stands at the start of a spring walk on the Cuscio plateau, and Carbini keeps a village market.

The Restonica valley is farther, about two hours from Porto-Vecchio by the central road to Corte, and makes sense as a full day or as a stage on a drive north. The road runs for about 10 km from the foot of the citadel to the Frassetta car park, and from May to September a shuttle runs from Corte to that car park. From there the walk to Lake Melo at 1,711 m takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and Lake Capitello at 1,930 m takes another hour and a half there and back. The road is closed in winter and large vehicles cannot use it. A helicopter flight from Porto-Vecchio over Bavella is a more realistic way to see the range in a short stay: the local helistation lists a half-hour circuit of the massif and a waterfall on its south side.

Brocciu, figatellu and the wines of Figari and Porto-Vecchio

Corsican cooking is a mountain kitchen that happens to have a coast. Brocciu is the island's fresh cheese, made from the whey of goat or sheep milk and best from December to April, eaten fresh at the end of a meal or baked into fiadone, a lemon-scented custard cake that does not rise. It holds protected status. Figatellu is a U-shaped sausage of pork and liver, flavoured with garlic, spices and red wine, eaten raw like salami or grilled over a wood fire. Lonzu, the cured pork loin, and coppa, the cured neck, are sliced thin as a starter, and canistrelli, the dry biscuits made with white wine, come with the coffee. Chestnut flour goes into cakes and flans.

Two appellations of Vin de Corse lie within reach of the apron. The Figari appellation, on the plain around the gulf of Figari about 20 km from Porto-Vecchio, is the southernmost wine district in France, with granite and limestone soils, a drying wind and more than half of the production in rosé; the estates named in the appellation guides include Clos Canarelli, Domaine Tanella and Clos de Sarcone. The Porto-Vecchio appellation runs for more than 55 km from Bonifacio north to Solenzara, on limestone in the south and weathered granite in the centre, and Domaine de Torraccia near Lecci is its reference estate. The grapes are Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu for the reds and rosés and Vermentinu for the whites. A tasting on the first afternoon is a sensible use of the drive from the airport, and we can arrange the visit and the driver.

Yachts, marinas and the superyacht traffic

The south of Corsica is yacht country, and the airport matters partly because it is the nearest one to the boats. A broker guide describes Figari as the best airport in the region for connecting with a yacht. Two harbours matter. The marina of Porto-Vecchio has several hundred berths, with figures between about 380 and 550 depending on the source, and visitor places for boats up to 50 m, about 4.5 m of water in the outer harbour, fuel on the quay from 07:00 to 21:00 in season and a harbour office open from 08:00 to 21:00 on VHF channel 9. Yachts often anchor north of the marina, though the afternoon sea breeze makes it choppy, and anchoring within 300 m of the beaches is banned in many places. Off Santa Giulia there are organised paid buoys.

Bonifacio is the other half of the picture. The port is a port of entry for France, it receives more than ten thousand vessels a year, and the fuel station on Quai Banda del Ferro opens in season from 08:30 to 18:00. Anchoring is regulated, and the maritime prefecture banned anchoring on the seagrass beds for vessels of 24 m and over, which sent some of the large yachts to Sardinian waters. Bonifacio's answer was to lay 14 mooring buoys in the Sant'Amanza gulf for yachts up to 60 m, and they are almost all occupied. For a client with a big boat the practical advice is to talk to the captain early, because a berth in the port, a buoy or an anchorage decides where the guests step ashore and which airport is nearest. We build the crew change or the owner's arrival around that choice.

Flying to Porto-Vecchio with a dog or a cat

The flight is the easy part with a pet. The animal travels in the cabin with you, and on a sector of two hours most simply sleep. What goes wrong is the date on the health certificate, which is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU, and the remote villa that has not agreed to take the dog.

private flight with animals

What an EU country such as France asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • A microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination or on the same day;
  • A rabies vaccination given at 12 weeks of age or later, with 21 days passed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each journey, signed by an Official Veterinarian and accepted for entry to the EU within ten days. A British pet passport is not valid for entry;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, brought in through a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for Figari;
  • On the way home, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet 24 to 120 hours before arrival in Britain, entered on the paperwork. Cats need none.

What catches owners out on the southern Corsica run

– The tapeworm window on the way home. France does not ask for the treatment on the way in, but Britain does for a returning dog, so a vet near the villa has to be found for the last days of the stay. Count back from the departure time: a flight that moves by a day can move the window out of reach;

– The breed. French customs does not admit certain attack-dog types, listed as category 1, and wants pedigree papers for category 2 dogs of the Staffordshire, American Staffordshire and Tosa breeds. If your dog belongs to one of these or is a cross, tell us before the quote is written;

– The places you want to go. The Lavezzi reserve does not allow animals, the hotel on Cavallo does not accept pets, and the Santa Teresa Gallura ferry keeps animals on the outer decks. A beach, a boat and a villa each set their own terms, so settle each before booking, and a Sardinian leg is simpler by air.

Cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are covered in our flying with pets guide. The airport of entry and the papers for the journey home are confirmed to you in writing before the flight, and a manager checks the rules against your dates before the booking is taken.

The Porto-Vecchio calendar: a long summer and a hard peak

The season here is long and has one sharp peak. The coordinated period for Figari runs from late March to late October, the beaches are at their best from June, and the middle of August is when the island is fullest. Choosing the week matters more than choosing the aircraft.

November to March
Quiet. Beach services and many restaurants close, and the summer slot system does not apply. Brocciu is at its best from December. Aircraft are easy to find, and the trips are family visits, walkers and the odd golfer
April and May
The maquis is in flower and the sea is still cool, with a first swim possible towards the end of May. The slot period starts at the end of March, but the field is far less busy than in summer. The hotel on Cavallo opens in May. A good time for golf at Sperone and for the mountain villages
June
The beaches wake up, and the commercial peak at Figari begins in early June, with airlines adding flights. Palombaggia and Santa Giulia fill at weekends. Rooms are still easy to find, and so are aircraft
Early July
Festi Lumi in Bonifacio, a free light festival in the upper town with about twenty installations over three evenings, brings visitors in and fills the old town after dark. A busy start to the high season
July and August
Peak summer. Porto-Vecchio grows to several times its winter size, Figari is at its busiest, and a Friday or Saturday slot is the hardest of the year. Aircraft are available, but the stand and the hour need early booking
5 and 15 August
The Bavella pilgrimage on the 5th, and the middle of the month, when the Italian holiday season is at its height and the roads, harbours and rooms are at their fullest. Book the aircraft and the slot a month ahead if you can
September
The sea is still warm and the crowds thin after mid-month. Levie holds its medieval festival in the Alta Rocca. For slots and for rooms it is the easiest month of the summer
October
The coordinated period ends in late October. Walkers and wine buyers come, and the wind and rain begin to increase

Why July and August cost more

Aircraft are rarely short, and Figari is within an hour of the Riviera and Rome. What tightens is the slot, the stand and the hour. A field built for 500,000 passengers has carried almost double that in a year, business aviation parks on top, and every IFR arrival needs its slot booked through the handler. Rooms and cars peak in the same weeks, so the party that books a month ahead finds the whole programme cheaper. A booking made a week before departure can still be done, but it often means an aircraft positioned from Nice, Olbia or Ajaccio, and that positioning goes on the bill. Outside the peak a charter to Porto-Vecchio can usually be arranged in a few days.

Ways to bring the Porto-Vecchio price down

  • Pick the cabin for the party and no larger. From Biggin Hill the CJ3+ is the basis of the price on this page, the XLS+ about £2,450 above it, and the M2 about £650 below. If five or six people and their bags fit in the CJ3+, the bigger cabin is money for nothing;
  • Move the dates by a week where you can. The first half of July and the last days of August are calmer than the middle of August, and September is the easiest month of the summer for slots and for rooms;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Nice, Olbia or Ajaccio takes less positioning than one coming from Britain, and positioning is a visible part of the bill on a sector of this length.

Types of flights

The mix of flights to Porto-Vecchio is unlike the other Corsican airports we cover, because one catchment holds a beach resort, two yacht harbours, a golf course and the mountains.

  • Villa weeks and beach holidays around the gulf, concentrated in July and August, typically from the south of England;
  • Yacht connections: owners and guests joining a boat at Bonifacio or Porto-Vecchio, or a crew changing over;
  • Golf trips to Sperone, with the clubs in the hold;
  • Island itineraries in two halves: Figari in, Ajaccio or Bastia out, with the mountains between;
  • Wine and food weekends among the Figari and Porto-Vecchio estates, with a day on the Alta Rocca;
  • Weddings, incentive groups and private dinners in the old town or on a headland villa.

A day trip is possible in the light months, for a signing or a site visit. Land at about ten, leave at three in the afternoon, before the border police finish for the day, and you are home by about four o'clock UK time, with five hours on the ground. In July and August the stand is the problem, because a jet cannot be assumed to stay on the apron all day, and the plan may have the aircraft waiting at Ajaccio or Olbia and returning for you, with the extra flying priced in.

Empty Legs

Empty legs are flights flown without passengers to put an aircraft where its next job starts, and they are sold at a fraction of the normal price. The far south of Corsica has no everyday business traffic behind it, so what comes up here follows the pattern of a summer resort.

Where Figari empty legs come from

– Weekend turnarounds. A jet that brings a party in on the Friday and leaves empty on the Sunday, or arrives empty to collect one, puts a leg on the market towards Britain, Nice or Paris;

– Yacht and golf changeovers. Owners joining a boat at Bonifacio and golfers at Sperone usually arrive one way and leave another, and the aircraft repositions in between;

– Island and Sardinia loops. Operators moving between Figari, Ajaccio, Bastia and Olbia put short hops on the market, and those hops can be cheap.

This corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, so a client with a window of several days has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. The price of the saving is control: the operator sets the date and the hour, and a leg can disappear if the booking behind it moves. Whatever is free appears on our empty legs page, and we tell you when a Figari flight is released.

Helicopter charter

In the far south a helicopter works for the edges of a trip. A helistation on the Route de Bonifacio at Porto-Vecchio lists scenic flights over Bonifacio, the Sperone gulf, the Lavezzi islands and Cavallo, and over the Bavella massif, each of about half an hour, flown in a single-engine Bell 206. Alpes Hélico lists flights to Porto-Vecchio and to Figari from Nice, Monaco, Cannes and Saint-Tropez, at roughly 95 to 105 minutes each way, with up to five passengers, and gives about 15 to 20 minutes from Porto-Vecchio to Bonifacio. Figari has its own helicopter stands and a landing area marked for daylight use only, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter does not land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, and Cavallo is private ground, so the status of a villa lawn, a yacht deck or a hotel terrace is checked before the quote is written;

– Weather sets the schedule. The strait winds can stop a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, and the mountains collect cloud and thunderstorms in the afternoon, so a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– A transfer between two Corsican helistations or airports counts as a French domestic flight and is normally flown by a French operator, so the helicopter and the jet are best booked together and planned as one timetable.

For mountain and coastal flying the Airbus H125 and the Bell 206 class are the working machines, the H130 gives a wider cabin for villa transfers, and a twin such as the H135 or the Bell 429 is chosen when the route crosses water. We confirm which machine the local operator will send when the quote is requested.

Porto-Vecchio charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

LONG WEEKEND · THE GULF

Four nights between Santa Giulia and the old town

Biggin Hill - Figari and return, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 05 min each way · 5 pax

Out of the south of England on a Thursday morning, lunch on the beach at Santa Giulia and dinner in the old town. The aircraft did not stay: it repositioned to Ajaccio for the weekend and returned on the Monday, a line that appeared in the quote from day one. Customs and police were notified two days ahead, and the handler asked for the slot.

YACHT · OWNERS JOINING A BOAT

Four guests, a driver and a quay to find

London City - Figari, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 10 min · 4 pax

The boat lay at Bonifacio, so the party landed on a Saturday morning, drove south and stepped straight aboard. The berth, the harbour office hours and the luggage for a week at sea were settled with the captain beforehand, and the driver was told which quay to use.

GOLF · A SPRING WEEK AT SPERONE

Five players and their clubs

Farnborough - Figari, Citation CJ3+, about 2 h 10 min · 5 pax

Spring is quiet at Figari, so the slot was no difficulty. The aircraft flew home empty and came back for the Sunday departure, so the quote showed two one-way flights. The club confirmed starting times once the flight was booked, and a stop at a Figari estate filled the last afternoon. The clubs went in the hold, which is why the party chose a CJ3+.

VILLA WEEK · EXTENDED FAMILY

Eight travellers and a week above the gulf

Manchester - Figari, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 25 min · 8 pax

Two families, three children and a pile of luggage. The XLS+ had the space and the hold they needed, and the Saturday slot was requested six weeks ahead. The jet dropped the party and went to Olbia to wait, returning on the Saturday a week later. A minibus and a second car met them at the terminal.

LARGE CABIN · DROP AND POSITION

A Challenger for the middle of August

Edinburgh - Figari, Challenger 350, about 2 h 40 min · 8 pax

Eight passengers in the middle of the high season. The stand for the heavier aircraft was agreed first and the slot afterwards, and the jet left again for Ajaccio soon after the party stepped off. The return was booked from Figari at the same time, so both slots were secured together.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING NORTH

A jet already going your way

Figari - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 2 h 05 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had flown a weekend party in and had to go back without passengers. The client offered a window of three days instead of one date, which is what makes these deals work, and paid well under a fresh one-way charter for the afternoon flight to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Porto-Vecchio

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Porto-Vecchio?

About 2 hours 5 minutes from Biggin Hill and 2 hours 10 minutes from London City to Figari in a Citation CJ3+, covering roughly 726 to 763 nautical miles from the London fields. From Bristol, Birmingham or Manchester allow about 2 hours 5 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 2 hours 40 minutes. Corsica is one hour ahead of Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands just after ten local time, and the drive to Porto-Vecchio adds 25 to 30 minutes.

2How much does a private jet to Porto-Vecchio cost?

From about £10,200 one way on a Citation CJ3+ out of Biggin Hill, and £10,250 from London City. A CJ3+ from Farnborough or Luton runs £10,350 to £10,600. A Phenom 300E or an XLS+ costs £11,350 to £14,850 from the Midlands and the north-west, and from Scotland allow about £21,200 in a Challenger 350. The weeks around the middle of August can price above these figures.

3Is there an airport at Porto-Vecchio, and which one should I use?

There is no airport in Porto-Vecchio, only a helistation. The nearest is Figari Sud-Corse (FSC / LFKF), about 25 km south-west of the town and about 22 km from Bonifacio, with a 2,480 m runway and a business aviation terminal. Ajaccio (AJA / LFKJ) is the fallback on the west side, about 2 h 20 min away by road, and Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB / LIEO) is the Italian option across the strait, followed by a 50-minute ferry from Santa Teresa Gallura to Bonifacio.

4Do private jets need a slot to land at Figari?

From late March to late October Figari is a coordinated airport, and IFR flights need a slot, which the handler requests for business aviation. Slots are given only between 06:45 and 22:59 local time. General aviation also needs prior permission from the airport operator, and customs and border police work on 48 hours' notice. Stands for heavy aircraft are few, so a large cabin is agreed with the handler in advance and may reposition to another airport between legs.

5Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Porto-Vecchio?

Britain is outside Schengen and France is inside it, so passports and customs are dealt with on arrival at the first airport, which on this route is Figari. Its listed hours are 05:00 to 17:00 for customs and 05:00 to 16:00 for border police on international flights, both on 48 hours' notice. British passport holders need no visa for a stay of up to 90 days in any 180, and the passport must be under ten years old with three months left after departure. The aircraft paperwork is dealt with by the operator and our team.

6Can I take my dog to Porto-Vecchio on a private jet?

Yes, the dog flies in the cabin with you. France asks for a microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination or on the same day, a rabies vaccination given at 12 weeks or later and at least 21 days before travel, and an Animal Health Certificate accepted for entry within ten days. A British pet passport is not valid. There is no tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet 24 to 120 hours before arriving back in Britain, and a cat does not. Animals are not allowed on the Lavezzi islands.
