Private jet charter in Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands lie in the South Atlantic about 7,100 nautical miles from London, and a private flight there is a long-range operation built around one military runway, a written permit and a stop on the way. Private Jets UK plans the trip leg by leg and tells the client early what the islands can and cannot offer a visiting jet. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In the Falklands that means a permit asked for a fortnight ahead, an RAF station for an airport and a stay among penguins, sheep farms and about two thousand people in the capital, Stanley.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in the Falkland Islands depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Farnborough, a Bombardier Global 6000 to Mount Pleasant Airport on East Falkland with one technical stop at Sal in Cape Verde, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to the Falkland Islands?

There is no short answer, because no business jet crosses this distance in one hop with a margin worth having. The straight line from London is about 7,100 nautical miles. The longest-range cabins are published at 7,500 to 7,700, and the crew must also carry fuel to reach an alternate that is about 478 nautical miles away, so we plan a stop. The islands keep UTC-3, three hours behind Greenwich Mean Time and four behind London in summer.

Farnborough to Mount Pleasant, Global 6000 via Sal
7,118 nautical miles in two legs, the London field we use for the price at the top of the page, with a Global 6000 and a stop at Sal
about 16 h
Edinburgh to Mount Pleasant, Gulfstream G550 via Sal
7,315 nautical miles in two legs, the Scottish departure, a little further out, flown on a G550 with the same stop
about 16 h 25 min

Why Sal, and why the clock at Mount Pleasant matters

The scheduled link from Britain is a Ministry of Defence airbridge from RAF Brize Norton, listed as taking about 18 hours with a stop of around two hours in Cape Verde. A private jet follows the same logic and stops at Sal, which splits the journey into about 2,422 and 4,696 nautical miles and keeps the second leg within reach of a Global 6000 with its reserves.

Ascension Island, the obvious stepping stone on a map, is no help to a private jet: under the UK-US arrangement only state aircraft may land there, apart from civil flights to St Helena. Mount Pleasant is listed as open from 11:30 to 20:30 UTC, which is 08:30 to 17:30 local time, although it can accept flights around the clock, so the arrival time is agreed with the airport in advance and not left to the wind.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– From Farnborough a Global 6000 via Sal starts at £190,400. The same route on a Gulfstream G550 comes to about £199,350 and on a Gulfstream G650ER to about £224,600. We do not quote a nonstop, because the 7,100-mile line leaves no margin for headwinds or an alternate;

– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home. A jet that delivers you to East Falkland has to fly the same two long legs back, whether it carries passengers or not, unless it waits for you at Mount Pleasant, and parking on a military station is something the airport agrees in advance.

Private jet flights from the Falkland Islands to neighbouring airports

There is nowhere to fly to within the islands. The paved runway at Stanley is short and used chiefly by the government air service, and the other settlements are reached by that service or by track. The sectors a visiting jet flies are the long ones to the mainland and the Atlantic, and each needs its own landing permission, which we check before we quote:

Things to know about the neighbouring sectors

– Punta Arenas is the closest mainland airport, 478 nautical miles from Mount Pleasant. It is the Chilean stop of the Saturday scheduled flight from Santiago, so it is the obvious place for a party to join or leave without waiting for the weekly service;

– The scheduled São Paulo service is listed as suspended, so we treat Brazil as a charter-only route and agree the permits before a price is confirmed. Every sector crosses open sea, and the crew plans generous fuel for an alternate.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. For the Falkland Islands the choice is narrow, because only the long-range class completes the journey from Britain:

Light and mid-size jets

For the sectors within South America once you are in the area, never for the flight from Britain, which would need several extra stops.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Ultra-long range

The class that makes the trip practical. The Global 6000 is the entry point for the Sal routing, and the G550 and G650ER add cabin size and fuel margin.

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Longest range

The only aircraft that could attempt a nonstop from Britain, and then only with a light load and a firm view of the winds.

Bombardier Global 7500 · 14 seatsfrom £8,300/h

Business aviation airports in the Falkland Islands

There is one airport for a business jet, and it was built as a garrison base after the war of the early 1980s. The islands' civil aviation department names two airports for international flights, Mount Pleasant and Stanley, and Stanley is a small-aircraft airfield that a jet does not use:

Airport Ground How it operates
Mount Pleasant Airport
MPN / EGYP
on East Falkland, about 53 km south-west of Stanley, at an elevation of about 71 metres (233 feet) The only airport for international flights, run by the RAF as a military station. Two asphalt runways: 10/28 of 2,589 metres (8,494 feet) and 05/23 of 1,525 metres (5,003 feet). The Falkland Islands civil aviation department lists it as open from 11:30 to 20:30 UTC and able to accept flights 24 hours a day. The Ministry of Defence must also agree to civil arrivals. A flight-support company lists ground power, stairs, baggage handling and VIP terminal access, and contract fuel; we confirm each item in writing
Stanley Airport
PSY / SFAL
at Cape Pembroke, about 3 km from the capital A paved airfield with two runways listed at 918 metres (09/27) and 338 metres (18/36). The civil aviation department describes it as open mainly to support the government air service, with no regular hours and often closed in the daytime. A jet does not land here
Amílcar Cabral International
SID / GVAC
on Sal, Cape Verde, the technical stop on the route from Britain Main runway 01/19 of 3,272 metres (10,735 feet), the longest in Cape Verde, run by Vinci Airports. It is the refuelling stop of the RAF airbridge, which makes it the natural choice for a private jet too.

Three points settle most Falklands arrivals before a quote goes out:

Permit: a fortnight ahead

Any aircraft entering Falkland Islands airspace to land or overfly needs a Foreign Operator Permit from the civil aviation department, and all flights are assumed to be commercial until shown otherwise. A private flight with no payment for passengers is covered by a Letter of Permission, applied for at least 14 days before the flight. The department says that permission for charter and private flights can be difficult to obtain.

UK-registered aircraft

A jet registered in the UK or a UK Overseas Territory does not need the Foreign Operator Permit, but the department must still be given the flight details, and the airport itself must give prior permission.

The alternate

The nearest mainland runways are Punta Arenas in Chile and Rio Gallegos in Argentina, about 478 and 420 nautical miles away. Which one a crew may nominate depends on the permissions held for it, and we settle that with the operator.

Arriving from Britain: permit, insurance and the way home

The islands are a British Overseas Territory with their own immigration rules, and a British passenger does not need a visa. The aircraft's permit is the real hurdle, and the passengers' side is short:

Passport
valid for the whole stay; the Falkland Islands Government recommends at least six months of validity remaining on entry, and entry can be refused on an invalid passport or one reported lost or stolen
check the expiry
Visa and permit
no visa for British citizens, and visitors receive permission to stay for one month on arrival; the Government's customs and immigration service requires a permit from anyone who is not a permanent resident, and no electronic travel authorisation is needed. Longer stays are applied for in advance
one month on arrival
Insurance
full medical insurance is strongly recommended, and the Government recommends aeromedical evacuation cover of at least US$2,000,000 equivalent
arrange before departure
Customs
goods that may be prohibited or subject to duty must be declared, and ammunition or explosives taken from battlefield sites are a serious offence and cannot be carried on aircraft
declare goods
Departure tax
an embarkation tax, listed at £40 for most passengers over two years old, is paid in advance in Stanley or by card or cash at Mount Pleasant on departure; payment in US dollars is not accepted
bring sterling

The way home runs through the same permit

The return flight needs the same clearance as the arrival, so the Letter of Permission and the airport's agreement are requested for both directions at once. We agree the immigration and customs meeting at Mount Pleasant with the flight-support provider in writing, because the published pages of the airport do not give opening hours for them.

Coming home to Britain is a normal international return. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. A party that leaves through Chile instead has to meet Chilean entry rules as well, as the Foreign Office points out.

Getting from the apron to Stanley and the settlements

The airport is about 53 kilometres from the capital by road, and the first decision is how to cover that stretch. Buses run from Mount Pleasant to Stanley, vehicles are hired in Stanley, and drivers and guides offer transport and tours. There is no scheduled transport elsewhere in the islands. The usual stops:

Stanley
the capital on East Falkland, home to roughly 2,100 people. The dockyard museum, the cathedral with its arch of whale jawbones and Gypsy Cove, a Magellanic penguin colony with a boardwalk, are all close, and rooms are limited from December to February
about 53 km from the airport
Volunteer Point
about 50 miles from Stanley, a drive of about two and a half hours, most of it on gravel and the last stretch on a grass track that needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle; the colony holds about 1,200 adult king penguins, with gentoo and Magellanic penguins nearby
full day trip

The settlements and outer islands are reached by the government air service, which flies five Islanders. Its advice is to be on East Falkland for the final night of the trip, and for a jet with a fixed slot we treat that as a requirement.

The Falkland Islands: what our clients go for

This is not a destination with a private-aviation scene. The last census counted about 3,700 people, 30 percent of them temporary residents, and the economy rests on fishing, sheep farming, tourism and the government. The case for a private jet is practical. The scheduled routes are one Saturday flight from Santiago, listed as passing through Punta Arenas, and the Ministry of Defence airbridge twice a week with a limited number of seats for fare-paying passengers. A party with a fixed date, a group of eight or a long chain of connections elsewhere does not fit that rotation.

What the islands offer is wildlife and space. Penguins, seals, sea lions and albatross share the coast with empty beaches and open moorland, and the battlefields of the Falklands War near Stanley, Mount Tumbledown and Wireless Ridge among them, draw visitors with an interest in the history. Business visitors are a small part of the traffic: the Government lets a visitor enter on a short permit as a company director, representative or consultant contracted before entry, and limits what a visitor may do for work.

The year in the Falkland Islands: wind, long days and the penguin season

The climate is cold, windy and damp. Stanley receives about 610 millimetres of rain a year, with light snow falling at almost any time, and the mean monthly temperature runs from about 9 degrees in January and February to about minus 1 in July. What changes through the year is daylight, wildlife and how many rooms are left:

November to February
listed as the best months, with an average high of about 13 degrees, long clear days and animals rearing young; the king penguin colony at Volunteer Point is busiest and noisiest, and Antarctic expedition ships call at Stanley. Rooms on the outer islands are booked months ahead
peak season
March and April
autumn, with some animals leaving for winter; the islands are never busy, and a visitor may have the wildlife to themselves
quiet
May to September
winter, with plenty of rain and wind; not recommended for a holiday unless you have a particular reason to go
harsh
October
spring, with an average of about 9 degrees and the start of the mating season for the wildlife
early spring

The Falkland Islands calendar: Camp Sports and Liberation Day

The events are community occasions more than visitor attractions, and the months we give are indications to check with the Tourist Board, not bookable programmes. With few rooms in the islands, a visit that coincides with one of these should be fixed with the accommodation first:

February
Camp Sports Week, held at the end of the sheep-shearing season, when families from the farms come together for horse racing, dog trials and barbecues
March
the Stanley Marathon, listed among the annual events
14 June
Liberation Day, the anniversary of the end of the Falklands War, which falls in midwinter

Flying to the Falkland Islands with a dog or a cat

Dogs and cats can go, but the paperwork is heavy and starts weeks before the flight. No animal may be imported without a current import licence from the Senior Veterinary Officer at the Department of Agriculture of the Falkland Islands Government, applied for in writing with the animal's microchip number, species, breed, age, sex, route and proposed import date.

What the British export guidance asks for

The animal must be fully vaccinated according to the manufacturer's instructions, and where a primary course needs two doses the second is given at least 30 days and no more than 12 months before export. For cats there are blood tests for feline leukaemia and feline infectious peritonitis, with results before export. Entire dogs of breeding age that will work as sheepdogs need an eye scheme certificate showing they are clear of progressive retinal atrophy.

A minimum of 14 days of house quarantine may be required on arrival. The guidance notes were written around travel by ship, so we ask the Department of Agriculture to confirm the plan, the entry airport and the quarantine period in writing before the booking is confirmed.

The way home is a British matter. The Falkland Islands are listed on gov.uk as a part 2 country for pets entering Great Britain, which means a Great Britain pet health certificate issued within 10 days before arrival, a rabies vaccination with 21 days' wait after the primary course, and no pet passport. Dogs need tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 and no more than 120 hours before arrival, and an animal that does not meet the rules can be quarantined for up to four months.

We confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal before the flight. The destinations where an animal travels beside you are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. For the Falkland Islands they are rare, and we say so rather than promise. A jet that has delivered a party to Mount Pleasant normally flies the same two long legs home empty, and there are few places in the South Atlantic where aircraft are repositioning at all.

A client with an open date can sometimes use the sector back to Cape Verde or onward to Britain, or an aircraft heading for South America after a European job. On a Farnborough sector in a Global 6000 an empty leg would cost about two-fifths of a fresh charter, which on the figures above is about £79,950 for the whole aircraft. That is a guide and not an offer, since the operator owns the date. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page.

empty legs

Helicopter charter and air tours

We found no helicopter charter operator in the Falklands. A helicopter company has based S-92 helicopters at Stanley airport, but none of that fleet is offered for private charter in anything we found, and the air service open to visitors flies fixed-wing Islanders. A scenic flight over Stanley or a transfer to a penguin colony by helicopter is therefore not something we can promise.

Where a client insists, we ask operators in the region whether a machine could be positioned for the job. Where that cannot be confirmed we propose the Islander service or a four-wheel-drive tour, which is how the islands move.

Falkland Islands charters from the booking notes: three typical trips

Three typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

WILDLIFE PARTY

Eight guests and ten days on the islands

Farnborough - Mount Pleasant, Gulfstream G550 via Sal, about 16 h · 8 pax

The group fixed the dates for the king penguin chicks and booked the rooms first. The Letter of Permission went to the civil aviation department more than two weeks ahead, the arrival was timed for the airport's published hours, and the aircraft flew home empty and came back at the end of the trip.

EXPEDITION TRANSFER

Connecting with a research voyage

Mount Pleasant - Punta Arenas, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 35 min · 5 pax

A small team had to reach a vessel sailing from the Chilean coast and could not wait for the Saturday scheduled flight. A mid-size jet flew the short sector, the permits for both ends were requested together, and the return flight carried the previous team in the other direction.

BUSINESS VISIT

A contractor and two colleagues

Birmingham - Mount Pleasant, Gulfstream G550 via Sal, about 16 h 05 min · 3 pax

The visit had a contract in place before entry and a fixed return date. Hours at the airport decided the departure time from Britain.

Frequently asked questions about flying to the Falkland Islands

1How long does it take to fly to the Falkland Islands by private jet?

About 16 hours gate to gate from London in a Global 6000, including about an hour on the ground at Sal in Cape Verde. A nonstop flight over the 7,100 nautical miles leaves no practical reserve, so we plan a stop. Local time is UTC-3.

2How much does a private jet to the Falkland Islands cost?

From about £190,400 one way from London Farnborough in a Bombardier Global 6000 with one technical stop at Sal. A Gulfstream G550 on the same route comes to about £199,350, and a Gulfstream G650ER to about £224,600. Air Passenger Duty is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in the Falkland Islands?

Mount Pleasant Airport (MPN, EGYP) on East Falkland, an RAF station about 53 kilometres from Stanley, with a 2,589-metre runway. It is listed as open from 11:30 to 20:30 UTC and able to accept flights around the clock, and the Ministry of Defence must agree to civil arrivals.

4What are the entry rules for a British passenger on a private flight to the Falkland Islands?

British citizens do not need a visa and receive permission to stay for one month on arrival. The aircraft needs a Foreign Operator Permit or, for a private flight, a Letter of Permission from the civil aviation department, applied for at least 14 days ahead, and a UK-registered aircraft must still send its flight details. We confirm the paperwork in writing before the quote is accepted.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to the Falkland Islands?

Yes, with an import licence from the Senior Veterinary Officer at the Department of Agriculture, full vaccination and, for cats, blood tests before export; a minimum of 14 days of house quarantine may be required on arrival. The way home follows the part 2 country rules of gov.uk. We confirm the plan with the Department of Agriculture in writing before booking.

6When is the best time to fly to the Falkland Islands, and how early should I book?

November to February has long clear days and animals rearing young, and these are also the busiest months for rooms. Winter from May to September is wet and windy. Book well ahead: the permit needs 14 days, and rooms outside Stanley fill months before the peak.
