Private jet charter in Belize

Belize sits on the Caribbean coast of Central America, 4,676 nautical miles west of London, and a jet that makes the trip has to decide early whether it lands in the Azores on the way. Private Jets UK builds these trips around that decision and then around the cayes, because the water, not the road, is how most Belize holidays are arranged. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For Belize that means one international airport that takes a jet, a mandatory local handling agent and a clearance number that must exist before the aircraft leaves Britain.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Belize depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, a Dassault Falcon 900LX to Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City with one technical stop in the Azores, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Belize?

Longer than the map suggests, unless the aircraft can cross without a stop. The Falcon 900LX is published at about 4,750 nautical miles, and Farnborough to Belize City is 4,676, so a westbound headwind can use up the margin before the Caribbean coast appears. The Falcon therefore calls at Santa Maria in the Azores, 1,400 nautical miles out and then 3,640 on, which is 364 nautical miles more than the straight line but leaves about 1,110 nautical miles of range in hand on the second leg. A Global 6000 or a Gulfstream makes the whole crossing in one go. Belize keeps UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving, which puts it six hours behind Britain in winter and seven hours behind from late March to late October. The times below are westbound, against the usual wind, and count flying time only:

London to Belize City, Falcon 900LX via the Azores
5,040 nautical miles from Farnborough in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Santa Maria
about 12 h 20 min plus the stop
London to Belize City, Global 6000 non-stop
4,676 nautical miles from Farnborough, with about 1,324 nautical miles of range in hand
about 10 h 25 min
London to Belize City, Gulfstream G550 non-stop
4,676 nautical miles in a wide cabin
about 10 h 25 min
Belize City to London, Global 6000 non-stop
4,676 nautical miles with the jet stream behind the aircraft
about 8 h 50 min

What the smaller jets can and cannot do, and how the day runs

A Praetor 600 or a Challenger 605 can reach Belize only with two technical stops, because the second leg from Santa Maria is 3,640 nautical miles, close to what those types are published to fly. Every extra landing is another hour lost, so we do not put them forward for a short stay.

The return is easier. A Global 6000 that needs about 10 h 25 min westbound is home in about 8 h 50 min. A Falcon 900LX that leaves Farnborough at eight in the morning reaches Belize City in the middle of the afternoon local time in winter. For a long weekend on the cayes we advise the non-stop jet, and for two weeks the Falcon with a stop is the sensible price.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– From Farnborough a Falcon 900LX with the Azores stop starts at £124,750, a Global 6000 non-stop comes to £126,650, a Gulfstream G550 to £132,550 and a Gulfstream G650ER to £149,400. The Global saves about 1 h 55 min of flying and the hour at Santa Maria;

– A one-way price includes the aircraft's journey home: the jet recrosses the Atlantic whether it carries passengers or not, so a single outbound flight costs close to half of a return trip. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport, by distance band, and appears as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Belize and to its neighbours

Belize is small, and nearly everything a visitor wants is within an hour of Belize City by air: the cayes, the Placencia peninsula, the far south. A foreign jet that flies a domestic leg needs separate clearance from the air traffic services office and carries the endorsed certificate on board, so for hops inside the country a local turboprop is usually the practical answer. The table prices each sector with the aircraft a broker would normally put on it:

Two things worth knowing about the sectors

– Several strips are far shorter than a jet needs, so the jet normally waits at Belize City while a turboprop takes the party on. Every sector to Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico or Florida is an international arrival at the far end, with its own forms. Flores is the gateway to the Tikal ruins, Roatan the Honduran diving island, Cancun the Mexican resort and Opa-locka the business airport for Miami. British passengers going to Florida need an approved ESTA or a visa.

Business aviation airports in Belize

Only one airport in Belize suits a jet. Every other strip in the country belongs to turboprops, the cayes or the defence force. The table sets them out:

Airport Ground How it operates
Philip S. W. Goldson International
BZE / MZBZ
in Ladyville, about 16 kilometres north-west of Belize City, 25 to 30 minutes by road The only airport in Belize that takes a business jet and the only one named for the entry of private and charter aircraft. One runway, 07/25, about 2,950 metres (9,678 feet), with an instrument approach. Customs is available, handling is mandatory and no slot is required, although the airport is listed with a 48-hour prior notice for all flights. Administration hours are listed as Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 local time
Aero Dispatch Services
Handling agent at Goldson
on the airfield, with an office in Belize City Listed in the national AIP as the authorised handler for private and non-scheduled flights. Directories give its hours as 06:00 to 18:00 daily, extended on request, and its services as fuel, ground power, catering and a courtesy shuttle. We confirm the hours and the fuel order for the date
Sir Barry Bowen Municipal
TZA / MZBE
about a mile from the centre of Belize City The coastal commuter airport, with one asphalt runway, 12/30, of about 940 metres. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly from it to the cayes and the south. It is a turboprop base and no place for a business jet, though it is the right door for a party that has landed at Goldson and wants the water
San Pedro
SPR / MZSP
on Ambergris Caye, a few minutes from San Pedro town The strip for Ambergris Caye, the largest of the cayes. We treat it as a Pilatus and Caravan strip and never as a jet airport
Placencia
PLJ / MZPL
on the Placencia peninsula, in the south of the country A paved strip of about 650 metres, 08/26, crossing the peninsula, used by scheduled turboprops from Belize City
Santa Maria
LPAZ
3,640 nautical miles to the north-east, in the Azores The usual technical stop on the way out. Its runway is 3,048 metres long and it has handled transatlantic traffic for decades. We name it in the quote, and the passengers normally stay aboard while the aircraft is refuelled

Three points settle most arrivals before a quote goes out:

Permission: 48 hours, in writing

A written request with the itinerary, any planned domestic flights and the purpose of the visit goes to the Director of Civil Aviation at least 48 hours before landing. The pre-entry form with passport details of crew and passengers comes back with a clearance number, and no aircraft may leave for Belize without it.

Documents: the aircraft file

Airworthiness and registration certificates, pilot licences and medicals, and insurance that names Belize; a charter operator adds its air operator certificate. All in English, in the ICAO format.

Handling: one agent, booked early

A local handling agent is mandatory for a charter flight and is listed as the only authorised handler at Goldson. A late arrival or a night departure is arranged beforehand and may carry an overtime charge.

Rain and runways

Goldson sits on a low coast, close to sea level, and a storm in the hurricane season can delay a departure. All hours here are Belize local time, UTC-6.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

A private flight from London arrives as an international flight, and the pilot carries the stamped clearance certificate round the facilitation offices in the arrival hall while the party completes its own forms.

Passports
British citizens can visit for up to 30 days without a visa, extendable at an immigration office for 200 Belize dollars per further 30 days; the passport must be valid for more than three months after arrival
every passenger, children included
Customs
every traveller completes an immigration and customs declaration, digital or on paper, and anything prohibited or dutiable is declared; the rules are strict and drug possession can mean prison
declare when in doubt
Departure tax
a tax is due on leaving Belize by air; on an airline ticket it is usually part of the fare, while on a private flight it is settled with the airport concession office, and the quotation shows how
settled in advance

How clearance works at the airport

The pilot presents the aircraft clearance certificate and the general declarations to customs, immigration, public health and the other facilitation offices in the arrival hall, and each office stamps the certificate. It is stamped again on departure.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do. Goods bought in Belize are declared on arrival in Britain like any other import from outside the country.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

Which airport for which part of Belize

Every trip starts at Goldson, and the only question is what happens after landing. These are the usual pairings:

Ambergris Caye and San Pedro
the largest of the cayes, reached from Goldson or from the Municipal airport in a short hop
Goldson, then a turboprop to San Pedro (SPR)
Placencia and the south
the peninsula and the Toledo district; Placencia has its own strip and Punta Gorda lies further south
Municipal (TZA), then Placencia (PLJ)
The Maya interior
Caracol and Lamanai are named among the great Maya sites of the country, and the Cayo district round San Ignacio is the base for caves and rivers
Goldson, then a car
Lighthouse Reef and the Great Blue Hole
the atoll lies about 70 kilometres off Belize City, and the quickest way to it, and to see it from above, is a helicopter from Goldson
Goldson, then a helicopter

Land at the jet airport, leave from the jet airport

A foreign jet that flies a domestic leg needs its own clearance and a runway that most strips do not offer. We plan the jet to arrive and depart through Goldson and use local turboprops and helicopters for the islands and the south.

Belize: what our clients go for

The reef comes first. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Belize holds about 300 kilometres of the roughly 900 kilometres of the Mesoamerican reef. Snorkelling and diving are a main reason people cross the Atlantic.

The Great Blue Hole is the headline. It is a sinkhole in Lighthouse Reef, about 318 metres across and 124 metres deep, some 70 kilometres from Belize City, and Jacques Cousteau charted it with the Calypso.

The interior is the third reason, with Maya cities in the jungle, among them Caracol and Lamanai.

English is the official language and the Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar.

The year in Belize: a dry winter, a wet summer and a hurricane season

Temperatures stay warm all year, so visitors plan around the rain:

January to March
the coolest and least humid months, and the peak of the visitor season; prices are highest and the aircraft and the best rooms go early
peak
April and May
the end of the dry season, warmer and more humid, with the north and centre of the country driest from January to April or May
late dry season
June to December
the wet season, with warm temperatures of about 22 to 32 degrees and heavy showers; the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November
wet

Weather, crime and the FCDO advice

The FCDO tells visitors to follow the national weather service in the hurricane season. It warns of theft of cash, cards and phones in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Ignacio and of hazardous roads in the rainy season, and says injuries in snorkelling and diving come mainly from inadequate safety precautions, so only licensed operators should be used. It also describes gang violence in the Southside of Belize City and armed criminals in remote forest on the Guatemalan border. We read the advice again before every departure.

The Belizean calendar: carnival, lobster and the Garifuna landing

The year runs on a handful of national days and a long list of village and cay festivals:

January
New Year's Day brings a cycling classic from Corozal to Belize City
February
Carnival in the week before Lent, with parades in the larger towns
March
Baron Bliss Day on 9 March, a public holiday celebrated nationwide and biggest in Belize City
May
The Cashew Festival in Crooked Tree, a trade show in Belmopan and the Toledo Cacao Festival in Punta Gorda
June
Lobster festivals fill the summer: San Pedro and Placencia hold one in June, and San Pedro marks its patron saint from 27 to 29 June
July to August
The Caye Caulker lobster festival in early July, the Belize film festival in Belize City and the Costa Maya festival in San Pedro in August
September
St George's Caye Day celebrations early in the month and Independence Day on 21 September
November
Garifuna Settlement Day on 19 November, centred on Dangriga and celebrated along the southern coast

What a holiday does to a flight plan

Offices close on public holidays, so a long weekend around Baron Bliss Day, Independence Day or Garifuna Settlement Day can delay a permit. We add the margin.

Flying to Belize with a dog or a cat

A dog or a cat can travel in the cabin. The paperwork has two halves, one for the way out and a stricter one for the way home, and the second decides how far ahead the trip has to be planned.

The Belizean side

The Belize Agricultural Health Authority, BAHA, sets the conditions. The animal needs a health certificate from a registered vet, issued within two weeks of travel, stating that it is healthy and free of external parasites, and treatment against internal parasites within 30 days of export. A dog vaccinated for the first time must have its rabies vaccine at least 28 days before travel, and the certificate shows the date, product, batch and expiry.

An import permit is required, and secondary sources say it comes from the Agriculture Department in Belmopan. BAHA must be told the date, time and flight number two working days before arrival, and an official inspects the animal and its papers on entry. We ask BAHA in writing which permit applies before the aircraft is booked.

  • A microchip, first of all. Belize does not state it in the document we read, but Britain demands it for the return;
  • A British export health certificate for Belize, signed by an official veterinarian. We check the current form before the booking is confirmed;
  • A word with the operator. We confirm in writing the inspection and what happens to the animal while the party clears customs.

The way home is the demanding half. Belize does not appear in the table of listed countries on the British government site, so we treat it as a country that is not listed. An animal then needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, a wait of three months from the date of the sample, and a Great Britain pet health certificate. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that does not meet the rules can be refused or held in quarantine for up to four months.

In practice the blood test is done months before the trip, so a holiday decided at short notice usually has to leave the dog at home, and we say so at the quote stage.

Rules for other species, and for countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, sold at a fraction of the usual price. A stay in Belize is mostly one-way work for the aircraft, which brings a party across the water and then has to find its next client elsewhere.

Where Belizean empty legs come from

– Florida and the Gulf. Opa-locka lies 700 nautical miles to the north-east, so a jet that has dropped a party at Goldson may fly back to Florida empty, or arrive empty to collect a group;

– Mexico and Central America. Cancun, Flores and Roatan are one short sector away, and traffic between them leaves aircraft in the wrong place;

– The end of a long stay. A jet that brought guests out on a Thursday may fly home empty on the Monday.

A client who can give a window of a few days has a far better chance of a match, though a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Belizean empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Belize - Cancun Challenger 350 9 seats £3,700
Belize - Miami (Opa-locka) Challenger 350 9 seats £6,400
Belize - UK (Glasgow) Global 6000 13 seats £51,300
UK (Edinburgh) - Belize Global 6000 13 seats £51,700
Belize - UK (London Farnborough) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £52,400
UK (Birmingham) - Belize Falcon 900LX 12 seats £52,500
Belize - UK (Manchester) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £52,650
UK (London Luton) - Belize Falcon 900LX 12 seats £52,750
Belize - UK (London Gatwick) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £55,950

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Global 6000 leg of £51,300 with eight aboard works out at about £6,410 a head, and the whole leg costs about two-fifths of a fresh one-way charter.

Helicopter charter and air tours

Astrum Helicopters is based at Goldson and flies Bell 407 and Bell 206B-3 helicopters on tours and charters, including transfers to island resorts and private flights to the Great Blue Hole, which can include a landing for divers.

A helicopter earns its fee where the road or the sea is slow. Goldson to San Pedro is 31 nautical miles, Goldson to Placencia 63 and Goldson to the Great Blue Hole 48, which a helicopter covers in about 25, 40 and 35 minutes respectively.

If a client asks for a private helicopter

A transfer to a lodge, an island or a yacht depends on the operator being free and on a landing site the resort accepts. We establish both before quoting, and otherwise propose a turboprop and a boat.

Belizean charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

DIVING · THE REEF

A week of diving off Ambergris Caye

Biggin Hill - Belize City, Global 6000, about 10 h 25 min · 4 pax

The group cleared customs at Goldson with the handler and flew on to San Pedro by turboprop. The jet waited at Belize City, since the caye strip is too short for it.

HONEYMOON · THE CAYES

Ten nights on a private caye

Farnborough - Belize City, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 20 min plus the stop · 2 pax

The couple crossed in the Falcon and went on to the island by helicopter from Goldson, the luggage following by boat.

NEW YEAR · A FAMILY

Placencia in the dry season

Birmingham - Belize City, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 20 min plus the stop · 6 pax

The family went on from the Municipal airport by scheduled turboprop to the south coast. January to March is the peak, so everything was booked early.

WITH THE DOG · A BLOOD TEST FIRST

A couple and a labrador for three weeks

Farnborough - Belize City, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 20 min plus the stop · 2 pax + dog

The blood sample was taken months before the date, the Belizean certificate was issued inside the two-week window, BAHA had the flight number two working days ahead, and a vet in Belize City gave the tapeworm tablet the day before the flight home.

ONWARD · TIKAL

Belize, then the Maya ruins of Guatemala

Belize City - Flores, Pilatus PC-12 NGX, about 50 min · 4 pax

A turboprop made the short hop to Flores for the ruins while the long-range jet waited at Goldson. It was a second international arrival, with passports checked again.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE SEASON

A flexible return to Glasgow

Belize City - Glasgow, Global 6000 empty leg, about 8 h 30 min · 3 pax

The client gave a window of four days instead of a date and paid about £51,300, well under half of a fresh one-way charter.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Belize

1How long does it take to fly to Belize by private jet?

About 10 hours 25 minutes non-stop from a London airfield in a Global 6000, and about 12 hours 20 minutes of flying plus an hour on the ground in the Azores in a Falcon 900LX. The way home is shorter with the jet stream behind the aircraft. Belize is six hours behind Britain in winter and seven hours behind in summer.

2How much does a private jet to Belize cost?

From about £124,750 one way from Farnborough to Belize City in a Falcon 900LX with one technical stop in the Azores. A Global 6000 non-stop is about £126,650, a Gulfstream G550 about £132,550 and a Gulfstream G650ER about £149,400. Air Passenger Duty is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in Belize?

Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE, MZBZ) in Ladyville, north-west of Belize City, is the only airport that takes a business jet. Handling by the local agent is mandatory and no slot is required. The cayes and the south are reached by turboprop or helicopter.

4What are the passport and customs rules for a private flight from Britain to Belize?

British citizens can visit for up to 30 days without a visa, and the passport must be valid for more than three months after arrival. Every traveller completes an immigration and customs declaration, and the aircraft needs a clearance number issued on a request sent at least 48 hours ahead.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Belize?

Yes. Belize asks for a vet health certificate issued within two weeks of travel, a rabies vaccination at least 28 days before for a first-time dog, an import permit and notice to BAHA. The return is harder: Britain does not list Belize, which means a blood test, a three-month wait and, for dogs, tapeworm treatment before landing.

6When is the best time to fly to Belize, and do I need a permit?

January to March is the coolest and busiest period, and June to December is wet, with the hurricane season running from 1 June to 30 November. Every private flight needs a written request to the Director of Civil Aviation at least 48 hours ahead.
