Private jet charter in Algarve

From London the Algarve is a flight of about two and a half hours, and almost every trip ends on one runway at Faro, so the planning that matters is the slot, the handler and the road at the far end. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around the stretch of coast you are really going to, the golf you plan to play and the time of year. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The region is a long strip of coast, running from Cape St Vincent in the west to the Guadiana river and the Spanish border in the east, and the resorts that private clients ask for sit in the middle of it. This page is written for the Algarve as a whole and tells you which airport, which resort and which time of year belong together.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in the Algarve depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to the Algarve?

Two and a half hours from the southern London fields, a little over three from Scotland, and no clock change at all, because mainland Portugal keeps the same time as Britain. At 919 to 1,198 nautical miles this is a mid-range sector: long enough that a light jet earns its keep only for a small party, short enough that nothing needs a heavy cabin to make it. The table uses Faro as the reference because it is the one airport in the region that takes business jets, and the only one this page recommends.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and you are on the ground at Faro at about twenty to ten local time, because the clocks match. The terminal is about 4 km west of Faro town, and the road to Vilamoura takes 27 to 30 minutes outside the arrival peaks, so a client who left a London office at half past five can be on a marina terrace in time for a late lunch. Add the drive to the British airfield and the quick processing at both ends and the journey from central London to the Algarve coast comes to around four and a half hours, against most of a day by scheduled flights and a transfer.

Light jet or midsize: what decides it for the Algarve

– Up to four people with ordinary bags, a Phenom 300E is the sensible answer, and a Citation XLS+ on the same sector from Biggin Hill is priced about £3,100 higher one way. That difference pays for the villa car and a few rounds of golf;

– Past that, or with four sets of clubs, paddleboards, a pushchair or a dog, we quote a midsize jet beside it so you see both figures. Golf bags are what fill a light-jet hold first, long and awkward as they are, and the hold decides;

– Heavy aircraft are for large parties, for a crew that stays with you across Lisbon, Seville or Marrakech, and for trips where the Algarve is the first leg of something longer.

The Algarve works as a base for an Iberian loop. Seville and Lisbon are an hour away at most, Marrakech is a light-jet hour and a quarter, and Madeira is the longest hop that still makes sense in a light jet. Typical one-way prices from Faro:

Seville or Lisbon: why the nearer-looking airport rarely wins

From Lisbon airport to Vilamoura is about 258 km and 2 hours 40 minutes by road, and from Seville airport about 221 km and a little over two hours. A Pilatus PC-12 covers the 106 nautical miles from Faro to Seville in about 55 min and the 124 to Lisbon in about 1 h, so a party that wants a city and the coast in one trip usually lands the London jet at one end and flies the turboprop to the other. For a trip that is only about the Algarve we say so: neither city saves anything against Faro, because both are more than two hours from the resorts.

Before you accept an onward quote from Faro

– Which airport, and who can fly into it. Lisbon airport is slot-coordinated all year in the Portuguese aeronautical publication, and Cascais, the business field near the capital, needs a special authorisation for any flight that arrives from or leaves for a country outside the EU, which includes Britain, applied for at least one working day ahead. A quote that ignores either is a quote that will change;

– Whether the aircraft stays or goes. A non-based aircraft may not stay on the apron at Faro for more than 72 hours unless that was coordinated at least 72 hours in advance, so a week of golf is a parking question as much as a flying one. Ask whether the quote has the jet waiting or flying home and returning;

– Whether the itinerary is one booking. London to Faro, then Lisbon, then home arranged as a single trip costs noticeably less than three separate quotes, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning each time.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for the Algarve:

Light jets, for couples and golf fours

At two and a half hours this is the class for three or four people with ordinary bags, and it is where most of the cheaper bookings land. Faro's runway of 2,490 m is far longer than any of these needs, so the money goes on the hour and not on capability you will not use.

Midsize, for families and golf bags

Clubs, paddleboards, a pushchair and a fortnight of summer clothes are what push a party past the light-jet hold, and the taller cabin is welcome on the three-hour sectors from Scotland.

Super-midsize and large

For a family or a group travelling as one party, for a team that wants the same aircraft through Lisbon, Seville or Marrakech, and for trips that carry on from the Algarve rather than turning round.

Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The right aircraft for the hops from Faro to Seville and Lisbon: both are about an hour or less in a turboprop, and the saving over a jet on that distance is large.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. The Algarve sits at the south-western edge of the European fleet, so outside the peak weeks there is usually an aircraft within a couple of hours of Faro, in Lisbon, Seville or Madrid, and in summer the same operators often have a jet that has just dropped its passengers and is looking for a way home.

Business aviation airports in the Algarve

One airport carries the whole of the region's business aviation. The others are worth knowing for what they cannot do, because a quote that names one of them is a quote to question.

Airport What it gives you
Faro Algarve
FAO / LPFR
The answer for every jet trip to the Algarve. One asphalt runway, 10/28, of 2,490 m by 45 m, about 4 km west of Faro town. Air traffic control, customs and immigration are listed as available round the clock. Business traffic is handled by ExecuJet's FBO with its own lounge, by Affinity Aviation (formerly Universal Aviation), and by agents such as Sky Valet, Elitesky, OMNI and Safeport, with dedicated stands for business aircraft. Slots are coordinated in the summer season, and a general aviation request goes through the handler
Portimão
PRM / LPPM
The aerodrome nearest the Algarve International Circuit, and the one to rule out. An asphalt runway of 860 m by 27 m, daylight operations under visual rules only, from 08:00 or sunrise to 20:00 or sunset, and no customs or immigration. It suits light aircraft and parachuting, and a business jet from Britain cannot use it. Race visitors fly to Faro and drive
Seville
SVQ / LEZL
The Spanish alternative for the eastern Algarve, about 221 km from Vilamoura by road, a drive of a little over two hours. It earns its place when the trip is Seville first and the coast second, or when Faro cannot take the aircraft, and it brings a second set of Spanish arrangements for border and handling
Lisbon and Cascais
LIS / LPPT, CAT / LPCS
Lisbon's main airport is slot-coordinated all year and is about 258 km from Vilamoura, a drive of 2 hours 40 minutes. Cascais, the business field west of the capital, needs a special authorisation for any flight arriving from or leaving for a country outside the EU, including Britain. Both are destinations in their own right and neither is a back door to the Algarve

Four points settle most Algarve arrivals:

Choose the handler

ExecuJet's FBO at Faro lists standard hours of 07:30 to 22:00, extended to 06:00 to 23:59 on request, with a private lounge, a crew car and catering. Affinity Aviation, the former Universal Aviation operation, lists 05:00 to 23:00. Service and price differ, so we ask the operator which it prefers and put the choice in the quote.

Hours, slots and noise

Air traffic control runs round the clock, but handling is published as 06:00 to 24:00 in the summer timetable and 05:00 to 23:00 in winter, and fuel is supplied from 08:00 to midnight in summer, out of hours only on request with a surcharge. Faro is slot-coordinated in the summer season, and business flights apply through a General/Business Aviation Clearance Request. Night movements fall under noise-abatement rules, so we confirm a late departure in writing first.

Border and passport

Portugal is in Schengen and Britain is not, so you pass border control and customs at the private terminal. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for at least three months after leaving the Schengen area. A first entry may include registration with fingerprints and a photograph, and the departure may take longer.

Car, villa and long stays

Tell us the handler, the villa or hotel and the golf club, not just the airport, and we give the driver the terminal and the aircraft registration. A non-based aircraft may not stay on the apron beyond 72 hours unless that was coordinated 72 hours ahead, so for a week or more we decide in advance whether the jet waits or flies home.

business aviation

Border, customs and the way home

Because Britain sits outside Schengen, a flight from London into the Algarve is an arrival from a third country: passengers see the border police as well as customs, and the Portuguese aeronautical publication lists both as available at Faro round the clock. The handler confirms that officers are on hand for your arrival time, so nobody queues with scheduled passengers. For the return, the General Aviation Report must reach the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure, and visitors who need no visa but are not British or Irish citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK.

From the apron to the Golden Triangle

The Algarve is a long coast with a short list of places where private clients actually sleep. Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago are two corners of the area known as the Golden Triangle. Vilamoura is a resort of about 2,000 hectares built around the largest marina in Portugal, with a casino and several golf courses, and Quinta do Lago is a private golf estate on 550 hectares. Albufeira and Carvoeiro lie to the west of them, Lagos beyond, and Tavira to the east. Quinta do Lago, at Almancil, sits closer to Faro than Vilamoura does. Faro is the only gateway, so the figures that matter are the drives from it.

Flying to the Algarve with a dog or a cat

Portugal asks for more paperwork than the flight itself takes. The animal sits beside you in the cabin and the sector is short enough that most dogs sleep through it, but the certificate has a ten-day life from the day it is issued, so the date on it matters. A golf week or a villa fortnight is a long stay by habit, which is why the way home needs planning as much as the way out.

private flight with animals

What Portugal and the EU ask for:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or on the same day, never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before entry;
  • An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued no more than ten days before the animal enters the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at the first point of entry into the EU, which the handler coordinates at the terminal;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain, recorded with product, date and time. Cats are exempt.

What catches owners out on the Algarve run

– The tapeworm treatment is for the way home, not the way out, so it is a vet appointment you book in the Algarve, towards the end of the stay. A week leaves room for it and a long weekend does not, and in the summer weeks vets are busy, so ask your villa or hotel for a name before you leave;

– A GB pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU. The certificate has to be a fresh one for each trip, and a dog whose rabies vaccination lapses while it is away loses the right to come back on it;

– Heat is real on the apron and in the villa: summer highs on the eastern coast reach 29 to 30 degrees, and more inland. Tell us about the animal in the first message so that the car, the villa and any helicopter transfer accept it before the quote, and back in Britain we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Algarve calendar: two high seasons and a long calm between them

Summer belongs to families and the beach, spring and autumn to golfers, and winter to anyone who wants sun at 16 or 17 degrees. Faro records about 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, with July the sunniest month and December the dullest, so the weather does less to shape demand than the school holidays and the golf calendar. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

December to February
Winter sun: coastal highs of 16 to 17 degrees, and December is the dullest month with about 159 hours of sunshine. Golf and long villa stays, light private traffic, and a charter can usually be arranged in a day or two. Loulé stages its carnival as the season ends
March
The World Superbike round at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão usually falls in March, and the spectators who come by air land at Faro and drive west. The spring golf season opens at the same time
March to May
The first golf peak. These are among the most popular months for the courses, tee times are booked early, and aircraft with room for clubs are held first
June to September
Summer: coastal highs of 29 to 30 degrees in the east, with the interior hotter still. Tourism peaks in July and August and the population climbs past a million at midsummer. Faro is slot-coordinated for the whole summer season
August
The Silves medieval fair runs for ten days and draws 100,000 to 150,000 visitors, and Lagos hosts small music festivals at Praia da Batata through the summer. Slots, apron space, helicopters and cars are tightest in these weeks
September to November
The second golf peak, with the sea still warm and the crowds thinner. Motorcycle racing at Portimão has been run in both spring and autumn, and the date moves from one season to the next, so we check the calendar before we quote

Why an August week costs more

Not the flying. The fleet around Iberia is large and the Algarve sits inside it. What gets tight is the slot, the apron and the car, all in the same weeks, and Faro is slot-coordinated for the whole summer season. A booking made a fortnight before the peak can still be done, but it pays more, and it may mean an aircraft positioned from Lisbon, Seville or Madrid. Made five or six weeks earlier the same trip is simpler and cheaper. In the golf months the squeeze is smaller but real, because the same handful of operators have room for clubs. Winter is one of the easiest times in Europe to fly into.

Ways to bring the Algarve price down

  • Move the dates a few days where you can. The shoulder weeks of May, June and late September are quieter and cheaper than the middle of August, and the sea is already warm;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet already in Lisbon, Seville or Madrid takes less positioning than one from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful share of the bill;
  • Take the light jet unless the luggage says otherwise. Four players and four bags of clubs may need a midsize hold, but a couple with two suitcases does not;
  • Agree the aircraft's plan for the stay. A jet that goes home and returns for you can cost less than one parked at Faro for a week, and the 72-hour parking rule means the quote should say which you are paying for.

Types of flights

The Algarve produces a different mix from the cities we cover, because it is a holiday and golf region first and a business destination a distant second.

  • Golf parties in spring and autumn, usually four to eight players with clubs, who want the tee times and the aircraft to line up;
  • Summer villa and family stays around Quinta do Lago, Vilamoura and Lagos, one or two weeks long, with a car waiting at the terminal and sometimes a helicopter for the last stretch;
  • Yacht travel to the marina at Vilamoura, with owners, guests and crew landing on the same days;
  • Motorsport weekends at the Portimão circuit, flown to Faro and finished by road;
  • Winter sun stays of a month or more, when the jet brings you out once and flies home empty;
  • Two-city loops that put Lisbon, Seville or Marrakech on either side of the Algarve in a single booking.

A day trip is worth a closer look, if only because it is rare. A same-day return means the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home, and that waiting is paid for. At about two and a half hours each way it is a long day, but for a site visit or a lunch on the coast it still comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters, and in summer we quote it both ways because the parking question changes the answer.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Algarve routes they follow the season and the weekend change-over, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Algarve empty legs come from

– Summer change-over days. Aircraft bring one villa party in on the Saturday and take another home, and the sector that finds no passenger on the day is the one offered;

– Golf weeks. Groups tend to arrive at the start of a week and leave at the end of it, so the aircraft that brought one party often flies out empty or collects another, and the departures that follow them are the ones most often offered;

– Race weekends at Portimão. Aircraft come in for the event and go back empty to their bases afterwards, and those departures can be released at short notice.

Because the Algarve corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag an Algarve match the day an operator releases it.

empty legs

Helicopter charter

In the Algarve a helicopter is a tool for the coast. The resorts are strung along roads that fill up in summer, and the last stretch from Faro to a villa, a marina or a golf club is where rotary flight can change the day. Flight times depend on the site, the machine and the wind, so we quote them for the transfer and do not publish a figure.

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. Landings outside an aerodrome need the landowner's consent and the operator's confirmation of the site, so a villa lawn or a club terrace has its status checked before we quote, not after;

– Heat and wind set the schedule. High summer temperatures reduce what a helicopter can lift, so loads and bags are checked in advance, and a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– Twin-engine machines are the sensible choice over water, and in the peak weeks and on race weekends rotary capacity is the first thing to run out. Book the helicopter together with the jet or expect to be told there is none.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for short coast work, the wider H130 for villa transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Algarve charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridors look like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

SPRING GOLF · THE CLUBS BOOKED THE CABIN

Four golfers, four sets of clubs and a week near Vilamoura

Biggin Hill - Faro, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 45 min · 4 pax

Four full golf bags and four suitcases would not sit comfortably in a light-jet hold, and the quote moved up a class for that reason and not for the seats. The car met them at the terminal, the first tee time was booked around the arrival, and the return was booked together with the outbound.

SUMMER FAMILY FORTNIGHT · FIXED DATES

Two families and a villa at Quinta do Lago

Birmingham - Faro, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 50 min · 8 pax

A pushchair, bodyboards and two weeks of clothes, on dates set by the school term. The booking went in six weeks ahead, which mattered because Faro is slot-coordinated in summer. The handler had the slot and the car agreed in advance, and the aircraft flew home and came back for them on the second Saturday.

MOTORSPORT · THE OTHER AIRPORT WON

A group for the Portimão race weekend

Manchester - Faro, Citation Latitude, about 2 h 55 min · 5 pax

They had asked for Portimão because that is where the circuit is. The aerodrome there has an 860 m runway, flies by day under visual rules only and has no customs, so a jet cannot use it. The aircraft landed at Faro, customs was cleared at the private terminal, and the drive west was the only compromise. The only cost was asking about the airfield before quoting.

A DOG ON BOARD

Four adults and a retriever for a May fortnight

Southampton - Faro, Phenom 300E, about 2 h 35 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment in the Algarve for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the villa took the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages.

LISBON FIRST, THEN THE COAST

Three days of meetings and four days of golf

Edinburgh - Lisbon, Challenger 350, about 2 h 55 min · 6 pax, then Lisbon - Faro by PC-12

The jet landed in Lisbon, a turboprop took the party on to Faro, and the return left from Faro, so nobody drove 258 km and the London aircraft never waited. One booking, three sectors, and the handler at each end had the same timetable.

EMPTY LEG · SATURDAY EVENING NORTH

A jet already going your way

Faro - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 2 h 40 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the week and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an evening departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to the Algarve

1How long is a private jet flight from London to the Algarve?

About 2 hours 35 to 2 hours 40 minutes from Biggin Hill, London City, Farnborough, Luton or Southampton in a Phenom 300E, covering roughly 919 to 986 nautical miles. From Birmingham or Manchester allow about 2 hours 50 to 2 hours 55 minutes in a Citation XLS+, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 3 hours 10 minutes in a Challenger 350. Mainland Portugal keeps the same time as Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands at Faro at about twenty to ten local time.

2How much does a private jet to the Algarve cost?

From about £12,450 one way on a Phenom 300E from Southampton, £12,750 from Farnborough and £12,950 from Biggin Hill. A midsize Citation XLS+ from Birmingham or Manchester runs £16,600 to £17,300, and from Scotland allow £23,900 to £24,100 on a Challenger 350. July and August, and the spring and autumn golf weeks, price above these figures.

3Which airport should a private jet use for the Algarve?

Faro (FAO / LPFR) for every jet trip. It has a 2,490 m runway, sits about 4 km from Faro town, and lists customs and immigration as available round the clock. Portimão has a runway of only 860 m, is open to daylight VFR flights only and has no customs, so it is not an option for a business jet from Britain. Seville and Lisbon are each more than two hours from Vilamoura by road and make sense only when the trip includes them.

4When should I book a private jet to the Algarve?

Outside the peaks a day or two is usually enough. For July and August, and for the golf months of March to May and September to November, allow four to six weeks. Faro is slot-coordinated for the whole summer season, and a late booking tends to pay more for an aircraft positioned from Lisbon, Seville or Madrid.

5How far are Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Lagos from the airport, and can I take a helicopter?

Vilamoura is 26 km from Faro airport and takes 27 to 30 minutes by road outside the arrival peaks, Albufeira 37 to 46 km, Carvoeiro 63 km and Lagos 90 km, about an hour. Quinta do Lago lies closer to the airport than Vilamoura. A helicopter transfer to a villa, a marina or a golf club is possible where the landing site is approved with the landowner and the operator, and we agree the site before we quote.

6Can I take my dog to the Algarve on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Portugal, like the rest of the EU, asks for a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate issued within ten days of arrival. For the return to Britain a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
