Business aviation airports in Brussels

Three Belgian airfields take private traffic for this city, and the choice between them is driven by the calendar as much as by geography. Zaventem is the default; the other two exist because Zaventem fills up.

Zaventem is where almost every booking goes. It is twelve kilometres north east of the centre, it works around the clock, and the general aviation apron sits away from the commercial terminals with its own road access. Handling is in experienced hands: the FBOs here have run flights around European Council and NATO summits for years, which is the specific competence this city calls for. Luxaviation Belgium, the largest Belgian operator, has been based here since the nineteen sixties.

Whichever field you use, the drive into the European quarter is the part that varies. From Zaventem it is twenty to twenty-five minutes outside the peak and forty inside it; from Antwerp and Charleroi allow an hour. The ring road around Brussels is among the most congested in Europe, and on a summit day sections of the Schuman quarter close entirely, which is worth knowing before a meeting is scheduled for nine in the morning.

 

 

Flying to Brussels with a dog or a cat

Belgium is straightforward in both directions and the flight is under an hour, which makes this one of the easiest routes we fly with an animal. The paperwork is the standard European set and your own vet will have issued it many times.

What Belgium asks for on the way in:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
• An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the return home for up to four months;
• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a Belgian vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Brussels as a destination

Brussels is a capital twice over: of Belgium, and in practice of the European Union. The Commission, the Council and the Parliament all sit in the same quarter east of the centre, NATO has its headquarters north of the city, and around them has grown the largest concentration of lobbyists, law firms, trade associations and journalists anywhere outside Washington. That is what fills the aircraft on this page from Monday to Thursday.

The city those visitors find is smaller and stranger than its reputation suggests. The Grand Place is generally reckoned the finest square in Europe, the art nouveau of Horta and his contemporaries covers whole neighbourhoods, and the food is taken as seriously as it is in Lyon while being much less discussed.
