Beyond the town: Mariánské Lázně and Cheb

The spa towns of western Bohemia lie an hour or less apart on a good road, and a client with a free day usually gives it to one of them. Mariánské Lázně, known to the German-speaking world as Marienbad, has about 14,000 inhabitants, around a hundred mineral springs of which 53 are tapped, and a colonnade and a singing fountain at the heart of the town. Its guest list reads like a school syllabus: Goethe, Chopin, Wagner, Kafka, Edison and Edward VII, who took annual holidays there. The town has no airport that takes jets; its old airfield is closed, so the aircraft lands at Karlovy Vary and the car or the helicopter does the rest.

Cheb sits on the border with Germany, about 43 km from Karlovy Vary. Its square is lined with the Špalíček, eleven narrow medieval houses standing together in the middle of it, and the castle on its rock was founded around 1125. • A written declaration that the movement is non-commercial and the animal is not for sale, and no more than five animals per traveller. Animals from outside the EU must enter through an approved place of entry;
• For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.
