El Prat is where a flight from Britain lands, and for a British departure it is effectively the only option. The reason is simple and worth stating plainly: Sabadell, the general aviation field north of the city that appears in most listings, has no customs facility. It works beautifully for anyone arriving from within the Schengen area and not at all for a flight out of the United Kingdom.

The general aviation terminal is a separate building with its own road access, and customs and immigration sit inside it around the clock, which matters on a route from outside the Schengen area. Handling requests are best placed a day ahead, though an hour of notice can usually be absorbed. Five FBOs operate from the same terminal, so the choice is about which lounge and which handler rather than about which side of the airport you end up on.

 

 

Flying to Barcelona with a dog or a cat

Spain is straightforward in both directions and the crossing takes under two hours, which makes this a comfortable route with an animal on board. The paperwork is the standard European set and your own vet will have issued it many times.

What Spain asks for on the way in:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
• An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the journey home for up to four months;
• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a Spanish vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Barcelona as a destination

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second city of Spain, and it manages something most large cities do not: a working port, a serious business district and a run of city beaches, all within a few kilometres of each other. The medieval quarter and the Eixample grid sit between the hills and the water, and the whole of it is walkable in a way that surprises people who expect a metropolis of a million and a half.

What brings the aircraft is a mix. The Fira runs one of the densest exhibition calendars in Europe, headed by the Mobile World Congress in late February, which alone moves a hundred thousand people through the city in four days. Port Vell and the marinas along the coast hold a good share of the western Mediterranean superyacht fleet, and the Circuit de Catalunya half an hour north takes Formula One and testing traffic through the spring.

The pleasure side needs no introduction and gets one anyway: Gaudi built here and the Sagrada Familia is still not finished, the Boqueria market sits off the Ramblas, and the Costa Brava starts an hour and a half north where the coast turns to pine and rock. When the city is busy

• Mobile World Congress at the end of February. The hardest week of the year to book, when aircraft, slots and hotel rooms all disappear together;
• July and August, when the coast fills and the ramp parking tightens with it;
• The Spanish Grand Prix and the winter testing weeks at Montmelo, which fill the ramp for a long weekend at a time;
• La Merce in late September, the city festival, which fills the hotels rather than the airport;
