Private jet charter in Bermuda

Bermuda lies about 3,088 nautical miles from a London airfield, a small island alone in the western Atlantic with no neighbour closer than the Carolina coast, and a charter there is built around that emptiness. Private Jets UK plans these trips by working out first whether the party wants one long non-stop hop or a fuel stop on the way, and only then turns to the hotel. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Bermuda that means one airport, one handler on the apron, a taxi or a hotel car for the last stretch, and a flight plan that leaves enough fuel to get somewhere else if the weather closes the runway.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Bermuda depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, an Embraer Praetor 600 flying non-stop to L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Bermuda?

Seven and a half hours westbound in a Praetor 600 or a Challenger 605, a little under seven in a Global 6000, and noticeably less on the way home. The Embraer Praetor 600 behind our entry price is published at about 4,000 nautical miles with four passengers, so the 3,088 nautical miles from Farnborough sit comfortably inside its range on paper. A winter headwind is what can change the plan, and when the forecast is hard the crew adds a stop at Santa Maria in the Azores, 1,429 nautical miles out of Biggin Hill and 2,035 on to Bermuda. Bermuda keeps Atlantic time, four hours behind Britain for most of the year and three hours behind for a few weeks in March and again from late October to early November, when the two countries change their clocks on different dates. The figures below are westbound, gate to gate, against the usual wind:

London to Bermuda, Praetor 600 non-stop
3,088 nautical miles from Farnborough, the aircraft behind our entry price
about 7 h 30 min
London to Bermuda, Challenger 605 non-stop
3,119 nautical miles from Biggin Hill, a roomier cabin at a higher price
about 7 h 35 min
London to Bermuda, Global 6000 non-stop
3,088 nautical miles from Farnborough, a faster long-range jet
about 6 h 50 min
Belfast to Bermuda, Falcon 900LX non-stop
2,897 nautical miles, the shortest crossing from any British airfield we use
about 7 h 05 min
Glasgow to Bermuda, Challenger 605 non-stop
2,953 nautical miles from the west of Scotland
about 7 h 10 min
Bermuda to London, Global 6000 non-stop
3,088 nautical miles with the jet stream behind the aircraft
about 5 h 50 min

Why Bermuda is a stay and not a day trip

A Praetor 600 leaves Farnborough at nine in the morning and lands in Bermuda after seven and a half hours, around half past twelve by the local clock, which feels like half past four in the afternoon to a passenger whose body is still on British time. The airport tower closes at eleven at night, so a delay of more than a few hours can turn a routine arrival into one that needs special permission, and we plan the departure time backwards from that closing time and not forwards from the hotel check-in.

The return is the easy half. The jet stream blows from west to east across the Atlantic, so a Global 6000 that needs about 6 h 50 min westbound is back in about 5 h 50 min. Crews who fly out and back in the same week plan two quite different days, and clients who go for a long weekend usually find that the flying takes most of Friday and most of Monday.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– From Farnborough a Praetor 600 starts at £49,050, a Challenger 605 comes to £62,750, a Falcon 900LX to £77,900 and a Global 6000 to £85,150, all to the same runway. The difference buys cabin height, a second lavatory, more luggage space and a margin for the wind, not a different destination. For four people with ordinary luggage the smaller jet is the sensible choice, and for a party of eight with golf bags the next class up is worth the money;

– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home. The jet has to cross the Atlantic again whether it carries you or not, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip and not as a bargain. Bermuda also draws most of its visitors from the United States, so an aircraft that brings a London party out will often go home through the American East Coast, and a return date left open can change the arithmetic more than any negotiation. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport, by distance band, and we show it as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Bermuda and to its neighbours

There is nothing to fly inside Bermuda: the territory is about 21 square miles with a single airport, so the sectors that matter are the ones that leave it, to the American East Coast, Atlantic Canada and the Bahamas, and the long leg back across the ocean. These are the flights we are asked for once a party is already on the island:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way

Two things worth knowing about the neighbouring sectors

– The nearest land is not near. Cape Hatteras in North Carolina is about 578 nautical miles away and Teterboro, outside New York, about 700, so a Bermuda stay is often combined with a few days on the East Coast, and a mid-size jet does the hop in roughly two hours. The handler's data lists empty legs between Bermuda and Teterboro, Bedford and other American airfields, which shows how much of the traffic runs that way;

– Every one of these sectors is an international arrival at the far end, with its own forms, officers and, for the United States, an electronic passenger declaration filed by the operator in advance. Whether a business jet is processed by US border officers at Bermuda before departure or on landing in the States depends on the aircraft, the passenger count and the terminal used, and we confirm it with the handler in writing before the quote. Halifax and the Azores are the alternates worth discussing with the crew when the American coast is closed by weather.

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Bermuda:

Turboprops

Not an option for Bermuda: no turboprop crosses the Atlantic in a day, and the hops to the American coast are better flown by a jet. We do not offer them on this route.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Light jets

The aircraft for the hops from Bermuda to the East Coast, which a handler's guide puts at about two hours for a light jet. From Britain no light jet attempts the crossing, so we do not offer it, but a party already on the island can use one for a weekend in New York or Boston.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Super-midsize

The Praetor 600 is the entry point for the crossing from Britain, published at about 4,000 nautical miles with four passengers, and the Citation XLS+ is the value choice for the American hops. A winter headwind can turn a non-stop crossing into one with a fuel stop in the Azores, and we say so in the quote.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Heavy jets

The class for a family with staff or a delegation of eight to twelve. The Challenger 605 and Legacy 650 fly the crossing, and the airport's single runway of about 2,950 metres takes them without restriction.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Ultra-long range

The class for the shortest day in the air and for large parties. A Falcon 900LX is the cheapest of these on the British run, and the Global and Gulfstream types cross faster with a wider cabin. The FBO lists hangar space for aircraft up to the size of a Gulfstream G650.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Because the island has one airport and the crossing is long, we usually name two things in the quote: the aircraft that brings you from Britain, and what it does next. It can wait on the apron for a short stay, go home empty, or fly on to the American East Coast to collect another client, and each of those choices changes the price.

Business aviation airports in Bermuda

Bermuda has one airport, and that settles most questions before they are asked. There is no choice of field, no second runway to switch to and no neighbouring country a short hop away, so the work is in the apron, the hours and the alternates. Beside the island's own airport, the table lists the places a crew looks at when it plans the legs on either side:

Airport Ground How it operates
L.F. Wade International
BDA / TXKF
north-eastern end of the island in St George's Parish, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi from Hamilton Bermuda's only airport, shared by airlines and private aircraft. One asphalt runway, 12/30, of 9,706 by 150 feet (about 2,958 metres) at an elevation of 18 feet, which takes anything a business jet operator is likely to bring. The government owns the airport and a private concession company runs it. Jet A is the only fuel sold, and customs and immigration for private flights are cleared at the FBO
Atlantic Aviation Bermuda
FBO on the airport
the apron beside the airport's general aviation area The only general aviation handler on the island, formerly Cedar Aviation Services. A terminal of about 6,440 square feet with a conference room for eleven, passenger and pilot lounges, ground power, catering coordination, concierge and hotel booking, a leasehold of more than 16 acres of ramp, and hangar space for aircraft up to the size of a Gulfstream G650. Arriving aircraft are marshalled onto Apron IV
Main terminal ramp
BDA / TXKF
the airline side of the airport Wide-body aircraft and aircraft with more than twenty passengers go to the main terminal for immigration and fuel before moving to the FBO ramp, and aircraft larger than a BBJ or ACJ stay on the commercial ramp. It matters for VIP airliners and almost never for a charter jet
Santa Maria
LPAZ
2,035 nautical miles to the east-north-east, in the Azores The usual fuel stop when the wind is hard on the crossing. Its runway is 3,048 metres, and it has handled transatlantic traffic for decades. We name it in the quote when a stop is likely
Teterboro
KTEB
708 nautical miles to the north-west, outside New York The business aviation airport that appears repeatedly in the handler's empty leg listings, and the natural point for a party that continues to Manhattan
Hanscom Field, Bedford
KBED
711 nautical miles to the north-north-west, outside Boston The Boston-area equivalent, also seen in listings of flights to and from Bermuda
Halifax Stanfield
CYHZ
784 nautical miles to the north, in Nova Scotia A customs airport on the Canadian side that the crew will want to discuss as an alternate when the American coast is under weather

Four points settle most arrivals before a quote goes out:

Hours: the tower closes at eleven

The control tower keeps 07:00 to 23:00 local time, and an arrival or departure between 23:00 and 07:00 needs prior permission, which the FBO requests at least 24 hours ahead. Outside the tower hours there is no tower and no fire cover, and the airport authority charges for opening a window.

Apron: call before you enter

Marshalling on Apron IV is mandatory. The crew calls the FBO on 131.6 or by telephone before arrival and again when ready to leave, and holds position until a marshaller is available.

Fuel: Jet A, ordered a day ahead

Only jet fuel is sold, the FBO prefers 24 hours' notice for fuel and services, and payment is by fuel card, contract release or credit card, with no cash accepted. The return crossing needs full tanks, so the order goes in with the flight plan.

Permits: usually the operator's paperwork

A private non-revenue flight needs no landing permit. A paid charter by an aircraft registered outside the UK and its territories needs a foreign operator permit from the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority, while UK-registered aircraft are exempt. Operators of non-Bermudan jets are also expected to have a safety management system in place or in progress.

The tower and the FBO desk keep different hours

The tower is staffed from 07:00 to 23:00 local time, while the FBO publishes a desk from 08:00 to 18:00 every day with on-call service by arrangement, and some directories list the handler as open round the clock. A late arrival after a long crossing is therefore agreed in advance, with the handler, the airport and the officers, and confirmed in writing. All times here are Bermuda local time.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory with its own immigration and customs service, and it is outside the British customs territory. A private flight from London therefore arrives as an international flight, and everyone aboard clears at the FBO on the day.

Passports
the passport must cover the whole stay and have blank pages for entry and exit stamps; British citizens may visit without a visa for up to 180 days in any 12 months
every passenger, children included
Onward ticket
visitors may be asked for a return or onward ticket and for proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking; on a private flight we agree beforehand how the aircraft's own departure is shown
agreed before departure
Arrival card
visitors complete a Bermuda arrival card online and show the downloaded copy, or fill in a paper card on arrival
online, before landing
Customs
the rules on goods are strict, and anything prohibited, taxable or subject to duty must be declared; cash and cheques worth more than 10,000 Bermuda dollars are declared too, and medicines travel in their original packaging with the prescription
declare when in doubt

How clearance works at the FBO

Immigration and customs for a private flight take place at the FBO. Crew and passengers clear separately, the luggage is scanned, and the process is short when the paperwork is in order. A fuel stop where nobody leaves or boards the aircraft needs no customs clearance. Catering that includes fresh meat is allowed with customs approval, and firearms must be declared and are held by customs, so we ask about both at the time of booking.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do. Goods bought on the island are declared on arrival in Britain like any other import from outside the country.

Getting from the apron to the hotel

With one airport there is no question of which field to choose, only of how far the last stretch is. Visitors cannot hire an ordinary car, taxis are the standard way to move, and the speed limit on most roads is 35 km/h, so the island rewards a driver who is booked in advance. These are the usual pairings:

St George's and the east end
the airport lies in St George's Parish, and the old town with its fortifications is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
airport parish
Hamilton
the capital and the base of the insurance and reinsurance business, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, with the Hamilton Princess among the hotels the FBO coordinates
20 to 30 minutes
Tucker's Town and the south-shore resorts
Rosewood Tucker's Point and The Loren at Pink Beach are both on the list of hotels that the FBO arranges transfers and bookings with
hotel car, arranged in advance
Southampton and the western parishes
Horseshoe Bay and the western end are 30 to 45 minutes by road, and Port Royal Golf Course, the home of the autumn PGA Tour event, is in Southampton Parish
30 to 45 minutes

Bermuda: what our clients go for

Business comes first, and it explains why a territory of about 64,000 people has a business aviation terminal with a conference room. Bermuda is one of the world's centres of insurance and reinsurance, Hamilton is where the business is done, and boards and visiting executives arrive for a day or two of meetings. The aircraft either waits on the apron or goes home empty and returns to collect them.

Leisure comes second and is mostly American by origin, since US visitors make up about 85 percent of tourists. Pink-sand beaches such as Horseshoe Bay, a string of south-shore resort hotels, golf and a mild winter explain the rest. A London charter is therefore usually one of three things: a board or client trip, a family stay, or a sporting weekend built round an event.

Sailing is the third reason. The Newport Bermuda Race, which ends at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton after about 635 nautical miles of open water, is held every second year in June. Owners and crews fly in for the finish and out again afterwards.

Bermuda is English-speaking, has nine parishes, a bicameral legislature and Hamilton as its capital, and its currency is the Bermuda dollar.

The year in Bermuda: mild winters, a busy summer and hurricane months

The year divides by temperature, by the calendar of events and by the Atlantic storm season:

January to March
the coolest months, with mean daily highs of about 20 to 21 degrees; a quiet time for private flying, with a marathon weekend and Restaurant Weeks as the main reasons to come
cool and quiet
April to June
spring turns into early summer; the handler notes that private traffic rises in spring and summer, and Easter, Bermuda Day in late May and the Newport race in June all bring flights
busy
July to September
mean daily highs of about 30 degrees in July and August, with Cup Match at the turn of July and August; the Atlantic hurricane season is under way
hot, storm risk
October and November
autumn events, golf at Port Royal, and the end of the Atlantic hurricane season on 30 November
storm season ends

Weather is a planning problem, not an exception

Bermuda lies in the path of Atlantic storms between June and November, and a runway that closes for a day leaves the aircraft with no airport close enough to use. We keep the return date flexible in those months, plan an alternate with the crew and, for a nervous client, quote a Global 6000 at £85,150 one way instead of the Praetor, because it has range in hand. The figures on this page describe an ordinary week.

The Bermuda calendar: kites, a yacht race and Cup Match

Bermuda's year runs on public holidays and sporting weekends, and each of them fills the hotels and the apron at the same time:

January
A weekend of running events that includes a marathon, and the start of Restaurant Weeks, which run into February
April
Good Friday kite flying, for which Bermuda is known, and later in the month the Bermuda Agricultural Exhibition and the Peppercorn Ceremony
Late May
Bermuda Day, a public holiday, followed by a run of harbour evenings that continues through the summer
June
The Newport Bermuda Race, a biennial offshore race that starts on the third Friday in June, National Heroes Day in the middle of the month and the Bermuda carnival
Late July to early August
Cup Match, a two-day cricket match between the clubs of Somerset and St George's played on Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day, a Thursday and a Friday that are both public holidays
October
Art Month, Taste of Bermuda and the Bermuda International Gombey Festival
Late October to November
The PGA Tour's Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish
December
The National Trust Christmas Walkabout, and New Year's Eve celebrations in St George's

What a holiday does to a flight plan

Cup Match, the Newport race and the golf week fill the hotels and the apron together, and the handler reports that private traffic rises around the big sailing events. The permit office of the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority works on weekdays from 09:00 to 17:00 and is closed on public holidays, so any paperwork for a holiday arrival is filed before the long weekend and not on its first morning.

Flying to Bermuda with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travels in the cabin, but Bermuda is strict about paperwork and has its own rules on top of the British ones. An import permit comes first, and every other step is timed against it.

The one fact to read before you book

Bermuda requires an import permit for every dog and cat. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources issues it once the animal is shown to meet the rules, and it is applied for together with the original overseas veterinary health document. Without a permit the animal cannot leave the aircraft, and the aircraft has to depart with it. The health certificate itself must be issued by a licensed vet within 10 days before arrival.

Animals arriving directly from the UK are exempt from the rabies vaccination requirement that applies to most other origins, which makes Britain one of the easier departure points. The way home is British: Bermuda is a listed country, so the animal returns with a Great Britain pet health certificate, and a dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that does not meet the British rules on return can be refused entry or held in quarantine for up to four months.

  • A microchip that a standard reader can find, with its number on every document;
  • A health certificate from a licensed vet, issued within 10 days before arrival, giving the animal's name, date of birth, breed, description and microchip number, the owner's details and the Bermuda address, and stating that the animal has no communicable disease and is free of external parasites;
  • A vet's statement that an acaricide with residual action against ticks was applied at the examination. Only certain products qualify, and we check the department's list before the appointment;
  • A statement about foot and mouth disease, which concerns whether the animal has been kept near an outbreak in the previous 30 days;
  • Breed lists to check at booking: several breeds and their crosses are prohibited, others are restricted, and rare or exotic breeds may be refused even if they are not on a list;
  • Entry through L.F. Wade International, which is the only airport;
  • For a dog, the tapeworm treatment described above. On a short trip of under five days the treatment can be given before leaving Britain, provided at least 24 hours have passed and the landing is within 120 hours.

The general rule excludes animals under 10 months, and whether the exemption for flights from the UK covers a puppy or a kitten is something we confirm with the department in writing. Birds, reptiles and the less usual species may follow separate rules, and we tell the handler in advance and confirm in writing the airport and the paperwork for the animal.

Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Bermuda produces them in both directions, because a visit is mostly one-way work for the aircraft: it brings a party across the water and has to go somewhere else to find its next client.

Where Bermudian empty legs come from

– The American East Coast. Most visitors to the island come from the United States, and the handler's own listing shows legs between Bermuda and Teterboro, Bedford and other American airfields. Some of those aircraft can be routed on to Britain;

– Event weeks. An owner's party arrives for the Newport race, Cup Match or the autumn golf week with a full cabin, and the jet leaves empty a day or two later, or comes back empty to collect them;

– The end of a long weekend. A jet that brought guests out on a Friday may go home empty on the Monday, and the leg is offered when the booking is firm.

A client who can give a window of a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Bermuda empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Bermuda - New York (Teterboro) Citation XLS+ 9 seats £5,200
Bermuda - UK (London Farnborough) Praetor 600 9 seats £20,600
UK (London Luton) - Bermuda Praetor 600 9 seats £20,700
Bermuda - UK (Edinburgh) Challenger 605 12 seats £25,550
UK (Bristol) - Bermuda Challenger 605 12 seats £25,750
Bermuda - UK (Belfast) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £30,800
UK (Manchester) - Bermuda Falcon 900LX 12 seats £32,100
Bermuda - UK (London Gatwick) Global 6000 13 seats £36,000
UK (Birmingham) - Bermuda Gulfstream G550 16 seats £36,950

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Falcon 900LX leg of £30,800 with eight aboard works out at about £3,850 a head, and the whole leg costs about two-fifths of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector;

– Bermuda legs are less regular than those on a busy European corridor and cluster round the event dates, so an open date helps more than anything.

Helicopter charter and air tours

Bermuda is a poor place to look for a helicopter. We could not find a helicopter charter operator based on the island, and none appears among the services the handler lists, so we do not promise one. For the distances involved a helicopter would also add little: the island is about 21 square miles, the airport is 20 to 30 minutes from Hamilton by taxi, and the speed limit on most roads is 35 km/h.

An aerial view of the island is available by light aircraft instead. Blue Sky Flights has offered sightseeing tours in a single-engine Cessna 172 for up to three passengers, with routes that can be tailored to the old forts, the golf courses or the pink-sand beaches, booked through Longtail Aviation. We confirm whether it is flying on your dates before we mention it to a client.

If a client asks for a helicopter

A transfer to a yacht, an estate or a hotel lawn depends on an operator being available and on a landing site that the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority accepts. We establish both before we put it in a quotation, and where neither can be confirmed we propose a car and a boat, which is how most of the island moves.

Bermuda charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

BOARD TRIP · SIX DIRECTORS

Two days of meetings in Hamilton

Farnborough - Bermuda, Global 6000, about 6 h 50 min · 6 pax

The party left on the Sunday and the aircraft waited on the apron, since the return was set for the Tuesday evening. The departure time was fixed backwards from the 23:00 closing of the tower and not from the last meeting.

RACE WEEK · AN OWNER

Arriving for the finish of the Newport race

Biggin Hill - Bermuda, Challenger 605, about 7 h 35 min · 5 pax

The owner flew out as the fleet approached the island. With the apron busy for the race, the handler fixed the parking before the quote was accepted, and the jet went home empty and returned for the party a week later.

FAMILY STAY · A FORTNIGHT

Five people and a villa on the south shore

Luton - Bermuda, Praetor 600, about 7 h 35 min · 5 pax

The outbound flight was a one-way charter, and the return a fortnight later was booked as a separate one-way once the dates were firm. A hotel car was booked in advance, as visitors cannot hire an ordinary car.

WITH THE DOG · A PERMIT FIRST

A couple and a spaniel for a long weekend

Farnborough - Bermuda, Praetor 600, about 7 h 30 min · 2 pax + dog

The import permit was requested well ahead and the health certificate was issued by the vet inside the 10-day window. The weekend was shorter than five days, so the tapeworm treatment was given before leaving Britain.

ONWARD · NEW YORK

Two nights on the island, then Manhattan

Bermuda - Teterboro, Citation XLS+, about 2 h 10 min · 4 pax

A London party that had flown out in a long-range jet sent it home empty and used a mid-size jet for the short hop to the American coast. The operator filed the American passenger declaration in advance.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE GOLF WEEK

A flexible return to Edinburgh

Bermuda - Edinburgh, Challenger 605 empty leg, about 7 h 20 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of four days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £25,550, well under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Bermuda

1How long does it take to fly to Bermuda by private jet?

About 7 hours 30 minutes from a London airfield in a Praetor 600 and about 6 hours 50 minutes in a Global 6000, against the usual wind. The way home is shorter with the jet stream behind the aircraft. Bermuda is four hours behind Britain for most of the year and three hours behind for a few weeks in March and from late October to early November.

2How much does a private jet to Bermuda cost?

From about £49,050 one way from Farnborough in an Embraer Praetor 600, non-stop. A Challenger 605 is about £62,750, a Falcon 900LX about £77,900 and a Global 6000 about £85,150. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in Bermuda?

L.F. Wade International (BDA, TXKF), the only airport on the island, with one runway of about 2,958 metres. Atlantic Aviation Bermuda is the only general aviation handler, and customs and immigration for private flights are cleared at its terminal. The control tower is staffed from 07:00 to 23:00 local time, and other hours need prior permission.

4What are the passport and customs rules for a private flight from Britain to Bermuda?

The passport must cover the whole stay and have blank pages, and British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 180 days in any 12 months. Visitors may be asked for a return or onward ticket, and complete a Bermuda arrival card online or on paper. Customs rules on goods are strict, and anything taxable or restricted must be declared.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Bermuda?

Yes, with an import permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and a health certificate from a licensed vet issued within 10 days before arrival. Animals arriving directly from the UK are exempt from the rabies vaccination requirement. On the way home a dog needs a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before landing in Britain.

6When is the best time to fly to Bermuda, and how early should I book?

Private traffic rises in spring and summer and around big sailing events, so book early for Easter, Bermuda Day in late May, the Newport race in June, Cup Match at the turn of July and August and the autumn golf week. Winter is cooler and quieter, with highs of about 20 degrees. The Atlantic hurricane season runs to 30 November.
