Business aviation airports in Lyon

Lyon is one of the few European cities with two airports that both take business traffic properly, and the choice between them is a real one rather than a formality. They sit six nautical miles apart, ten minutes by road, and both are run by the same airport company under the same handling label.

Bron is the default and has been the city’s aerodrome since 1920, taking all of its traffic until the commercial flights moved out to Saint-Exupery in 1975. It is now the third busiest business aviation airport in France, with a single terminal building where the car pulls up at the door and customs sits inside the same room. For a light or midsize aircraft it is quicker in every respect. Saint-Exupery earns its place when the aircraft is larger than the Bron runway comfortably takes, when the party is arriving from outside the Schengen area at an awkward hour, or when a long-range cabin is continuing somewhere else afterwards.

 

 

Flying to Lyon with a dog or a cat

France is straightforward in both directions, and at eighty minutes this is one of the gentler routes we fly with an animal on board. The paperwork is the standard European set and your own vet will have issued it many times.

What France asks for on the way in:

• An ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination rather than after it;
• A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, the animal being 12 weeks old or more when it was administered;
• An EU Animal Health Certificate from a UK government-authorised veterinarian, issued within 10 days of arrival and valid for the return home for up to four months;
• Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a French vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Lyon as a destination

Lyon is the second economy of France and, by most accounts including its own, the gastronomic capital of the country. It sits where the Rhone meets the Saone, two thousand years old, with a Renaissance quarter that is one of the largest in Europe and a set of covered passageways through the buildings, the traboules, that were built for the silk trade and are still walked through daily. The old town, the hill of Fourviere and the Presqu’ile between the rivers are all UNESCO listed together.

The business that brings people here is concentrated and identifiable. Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sit east and south of the city, chemicals along the Rhone valley corridor, and Interpol has its headquarters on the Quai Charles de Gaulle. Eurexpo, the exhibition park, runs a calendar of trade fairs that puts more private aircraft on the ground here in a single week than most French cities see in a month. Part-Dieu is the business district and the second largest in France after La Defense.

The other half of Lyon’s private aviation traffic never sees the city at all. • Le Royal. On Place Bellecour in the middle of the Presqu’ile, run in partnership with the Institut Paul Bocuse, which tells you what the restaurant is like;
• Chateau de Bagnols. A restored medieval castle in the Beaujolais hills forty minutes north, for clients who want the vineyards rather than the city;
• In the mountains, the chalets and hotels of Courchevel 1850, Meribel and Val d’Isere, which is where most February arrivals are heading.

What to do

• Eat. This is the reason many people come. The bouchons of the old town serve the traditional Lyonnais cooking, and the city holds one of the densest concentrations of starred kitchens in France, a tradition that runs back to Paul Bocuse and before him to the meres lyonnaises;

• The Musee des Confluences and the Confluence quarter, where the two rivers meet and the city has put its contemporary architecture.

When the city is busy

• The ski season, from late December to early April. This is the dominant pattern on the route, and the Saturdays in February are the hardest days of the year to book;
• The Fete des Lumieres in December. Four nights when the whole city is lit and several million people arrive, which fills every hotel room and every handling slot;
• Trade fairs at Eurexpo. The calendar runs most of the year and the big weeks are known well in advance, so ask us when you first have dates rather than when you have finalised them;
