Private Jet Charter to South Africa from the UK
Private Jets UK flies clients from Britain to South Africa without a refuelling stop, on a sector short enough that most long-range cabins manage it in one leg. Our customers have access to 6500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. For 15 years of successful work, we have established partnerships with the world’s largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you the most favorable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. South Africa has one of the strongest business aviation fleets outside Europe and North America, with established operators and maintenance at Lanseria and Cape Town. Long-range cabins for the flight from Britain still come from Europe or the Gulf, but everything that happens after you land can be flown locally, and that shapes how we price a trip here.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in South Africa depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Legacy 600 and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to South Africa?
Ten and a half hours from London to Johannesburg, and every figure below is flown in one leg. That deserves stating plainly, because South Africa is often lumped in with the genuinely unreachable long-haul destinations and it does not belong there. Johannesburg sits just under five thousand nautical miles from Britain, Cape Town a little over five thousand two hundred, and both are comfortably inside the range of any large-cabin aircraft. There is no technical stop, no crew change on the ground and no arithmetic to negotiate:

Which cabins do it in one leg
More than most people expect. The Gulfstream G650ER and Bombardier Global 7500 do it with a great deal to spare, but so do the G550, the Falcon 8X and the Global 6000, and even a Falcon 7X manages Johannesburg with a sensible load. That widens the choice considerably and it moves the price, because the hourly rate between a Falcon 7X and a Global 7500 is a substantial gap over ten and a half hours. Cape Town and Port Elizabeth sit three to four hundred miles further south than Johannesburg and narrow the field slightly, which is why we check the loaded figures against your passenger and baggage count rather than working from a brochure range.
Two things that make this route easier than it looks
– The time difference is one or two hours depending on the season, which for a destination this far south is remarkable. There is effectively no jet lag to recover from, and a meeting the morning after arrival is realistic in a way it never is flying east;
– The flight runs overnight in both directions on most schedules. Leave London in the evening, land in Johannesburg after breakfast, and the ten and a half hours are spent asleep rather than waiting on an apron in the Gulf.

Recent trips from Britain, cheapest first, all of them nonstop. Cape Town prices above Johannesburg for the simple reason that it is further south.

Private jet flights within South Africa and the region
This is where the country differs sharply from the other long-haul destinations we cover. South Africa has a deep local charter fleet, well maintained and easy to book, and most of what happens after you land is flown on it rather than on the aircraft that carried you south. The distances make the case: Kruger is under two hundred miles from Johannesburg, Cape Town under seven hundred, and the safari lodges are reachable on turboprops that no European operator would send this far.

The safari leg is a turboprop, and that is not a downgrade
Private game reserves are served by short gravel and grass strips that a jet cannot use. The aircraft that flies you from Johannesburg to a lodge in the Sabi Sand or the Timbavati is a Pilatus PC-12 or a Caravan, and it is the right tool rather than a compromise: it lands where the lodge is instead of an hour away down a dirt road. Clients occasionally ask for a jet on that leg and we explain why the answer is no. The same applies to Botswana, where the Okavango camps are reached almost entirely by light turboprop.
The regional destinations in that second group are all comfortably within a large-cabin aircraft from Johannesburg, and a good number of trips combine them: a week on safari, a few days in Cape Town, then Mauritius or the Victoria Falls. Where the itinerary crosses a border, tell us at the enquiry stage, since the permits and the aircraft registration matter more once you leave South African airspace.
Prices depending on the type of business jet
We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

The cost per hour indicated in the table is preliminary and does not constitute an offer or a commercial offer. Exact prices are available from the managers of the company.
Online Calculator
If you want to make an urgent calculation of the cost of a private plane flight, use our online calculator. Just fill in all the fields of the form with a note that you are interested in a specific model of the aircraft and get the final price. NB! – the figures are sent to you by email or messenger, please carefully fill in the contact details to get the calculation.
All our calculations are as transparent as possible for you. After receiving the request, we will prepare a beautiful offer - where the costs and the final price will be clearly described. The exact price is agreed in advance and is written in the contract, so you can be sure of the final cost.
Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6500 business jets (about 3500 in Europe and 3000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can’t post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. The following jets currently operate in South Africa:
Nonstop to Johannesburg
Where most of our bookings land. All four reach the Highveld in one leg with a full cabin, and the hourly rates here start lower than anything the longer southern sectors allow.
Nonstop to Cape Town and the far south
Three to four hundred miles further than Johannesburg, which narrows the field. These take a full cabin to the Cape or Port Elizabeth without a second thought.
Business liners
For family groups, corporate parties and the December season, when several households travel together. A separate bedroom on an overnight sector is the whole argument.
The local jet fleet
What we move clients onto after arrival. Well established here, easy to book and priced far below holding a long-range cabin on a Johannesburg apron for a fortnight.
Bush aircraft
For the reserves and the Okavango. Short gravel and grass strips rule jets out entirely, so this is the class that actually lands at the lodge rather than an hour away from it.

This is a small part of what is available. Long-range cabins are sourced wherever they are positioned in Europe or the Gulf, and the local fleet is booked here.

Business aviation airports in South Africa
Six fields cover almost everything we arrange here, and for Johannesburg there is a genuine choice to make rather than a default. Lanseria, OR Tambo and King Shaka each run around the clock with customs and immigration on site.
| Airport | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| Johannesburg Lanseria FALA |
The business aviation choice for the north of the city, privately owned and noticeably quicker to move through than the main hub. Slots are not normally required, taxi times are short, and the established FBOs and maintenance are here |
| Johannesburg OR Tambo FAOR |
The main international gateway, and the right answer when a schedule or a connection demands it. Busier, and slots are required |
| Cape Town International FACT |
The southern gateway and the one clients ask for most in the European winter. Full FBO facilities, but slot coordination is strict and parking is tight through the peak season |
| Durban King Shaka FALE |
The KwaZulu-Natal coast and the golf corridor. Round-the-clock clearance, and slots are required |
| Nelspruit Kruger Mpumalanga FAKN |
The gateway to the Kruger and the private reserves, and the usual handover point from jet to bush aircraft |
| Port Elizabeth and George FAPE / FAGG |
The Eastern Cape, the Garden Route and the golf estates around them |
Lanseria or OR Tambo: the decision worth making early
Most clients arriving privately in Johannesburg are better served by Lanseria. It is South Africa’s only privately owned international airport, it sits on the north-western side of the city closer to Sandton and the northern suburbs where most business and most good hotels are, it does not normally require slots, and the ground time is materially shorter. OR Tambo remains the right choice where a connection, a specific handler or a schedule constraint points that way, and it handles private traffic perfectly well. One procedural detail applies at both: an international arrival clears customs and immigration at the main terminal first and only then repositions to the private hangar or FBO, so the walk to your car is not quite as immediate as it would be at a European private terminal.

Permits, and the one that takes a month
For a straightforward private trip the paperwork here is far lighter than in Asia, and a charter can usually be arranged in days rather than weeks. There is one significant exception, and it catches people out: a foreign operator carrying more than eight passengers commercially needs a foreign operator permit, and that approval realistically wants about a month. Documents have to be certified by a commissioner of oaths and sent as originals or certified copies by courier, since scans are not accepted. So a group of six on a Falcon 7X is a short lead time, and the same trip with twelve on a Global is a different conversation entirely. We establish the passenger count early for exactly this reason. Overflight clearances for the countries en route are handled alongside and are routine.
Three practical points on arrival
– Slots are required at OR Tambo, Cape Town and Durban but not usually at Lanseria, which is another argument for the latter when the schedule is tight;
– Cape Town in the southern summer is the pressure point. Slot coordination tightens and parking is limited from December through February, so those dates are booked well ahead or the aircraft repositions after dropping you;
– A yellow fever certificate is required only when arriving from a country on the South African list, which for a flight from Britain does not apply. It becomes relevant if your itinerary has come through parts of central or east Africa first.
British passport holders do not need a visa for a short holiday or business visit, and on a private arrival the formalities are handled at the terminal rather than in a queue. Our managers confirm the current position for every passenger before departure.
The seasons run backwards, and that is the point
South Africa is in the southern hemisphere, so its summer is the British winter. That single fact drives most of the traffic on this route: December and January here are hot, dry and long-evening, while London is dark at four in the afternoon. The calendar looks like this:
Cape Town at its busiest and most expensive, slots and parking at their tightest, and the weeks to book months rather than weeks aheadthe peak
the same weather with the crowds gone, the Cape wine harvest, and prices noticeably below the peakthe sweet spot
the dry months, when the bush thins out and the game concentrates at the water. Cooler in the Cape, but this is when the reserves are at their bestthe safari season
southern right whales along the Western Cape coast, and the lowest prices of the year into Cape Townthe whale and the quiet Cape
warming up, the jacarandas out in Johannesburg, and good availability before the December rush closes it downthe shoulder
What this means when you book
– The safari season and the beach season are opposite halves of the year. A trip that wants both is a compromise, and it is worth deciding which matters more before the dates are set;
– Christmas and New Year in Cape Town is the single hardest booking of the year on this route, harder than anything the Mediterranean produces in August. Aircraft, slots and parking all tighten at once;
– February and March are consistently the best value for a Cape trip, and May to September for the bush. Outside December and January the whole route is comparatively relaxed.
Flying to South Africa with a dog or a cat
Britain sits in a privileged position here, and it is worth knowing before you assume the worst. Dogs arriving in South Africa from most of the world face a quarantine period; those arriving from the United Kingdom, with the paperwork correctly done, do not. Cats are exempt regardless. What South Africa asks for instead is a permit, and it asks well in advance.
Two things that surprise owners on this route
– The animal does not travel in the cabin with you. South Africa requires cats and dogs to arrive as manifested cargo on a scheduled service, so the dog flies separately even though you are on a private aircraft. This is a national rule and there is no private aviation exception to it;
– The port of entry is not a free choice. Johannesburg and Cape Town accept every category, and they are the only options for an animal that falls into one requiring quarantine. Durban can take animals that do not, but the paperwork has to say so, which is one more reason the permit is settled before the flight is.
What the paperwork involves:
- A veterinary import permit from the South African authorities, applied for six to twelve weeks before travel. This is the controlling document and it dictates which health certificate template applies and what else is required;
- An ISO-standard microchip, recorded on every subsequent document;
- A current rabies vaccination, with timing rules that depend on when it was given;
- Additional blood testing for dogs, which is where most of the lead time goes and which varies by permit;
- A veterinary health certificate in the format the permit specifies, completed close to departure.
The return to Britain is the longer half
South Africa is not on the list of countries from which an animal returns to Great Britain under the simple rules, because rabies is present there. Started from scratch after arrival, the journey home means a rabies antibody test and then a three-month wait. Owners going out for a fortnight avoid this entirely by having the blood sample drawn by their own vet in Britain before departure and keeping the vaccination unbroken, which costs one appointment. Those relocating should treat the return timetable as part of the plan from the outset rather than a problem for later.
Because the permit is the document that governs everything else and the requirements are revised more often than most, our managers confirm the current position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken, and will put you in touch with agents who handle this route regularly. Rules for the destinations where an animal travels beside you in the cabin are set out on our flying with pets guide.
Types of flights
The traffic on this route splits more evenly between business and leisure than on any other long-haul destination we sell, which is a consequence of the ties between the two countries rather than of the flying. What reaches our desk:
- Safari itineraries, usually a jet to Johannesburg and a turboprop onward to a reserve, and the single most common shape of trip here;
- The southern summer season in Cape Town, running from December to February and drawing families who own or rent property on the Atlantic Seaboard;
- Corporate and resources travel, particularly mining, energy and financial services, where the connections between London and Johannesburg are long-standing;
- Family travel between Britain and a large South African diaspora, which produces movement in both directions and around fixed family dates;
- Golf trips through the winter months, on the Garden Route and around Durban, where the courses are open when British ones are not;
- Multi-country African itineraries, where South Africa is the arrival point and the trip continues to Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia or Mauritius.
The one thing worth flagging about lead time is the passenger count rather than the calendar. A small group can be arranged in days, because the paperwork for a private trip is light and the aircraft are available. Move above eight passengers commercially and the operator permit becomes the constraint, and that wants around a month. It is a threshold rather than a gradient, so tell us the numbers at the first call even if the names are still moving.

Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight offered at a discount because the aircraft has to make the journey with nobody aboard. On a ten-hour sector the saving is large in absolute terms, and this corridor produces them for a reason specific to the calendar.
Where they come from here
– The December migration. European aircraft come south for the season and go back north empty, then return empty to collect in January and February. That rhythm generates more legs than any other period of the year;
– The Cape parking squeeze. When a long-range cabin cannot hold a stand through the peak weeks it leaves, and a departing aircraft with empty seats is worth asking about;
– The domestic shuttle. Aircraft move constantly between Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and those short legs are cheap enough to be worth watching even when the long sector is not.
Discounts run from about half to three quarters of a fresh charter. What you surrender is control of the date and often the hour, and a leg can disappear when the original booking shifts. The season is what makes this route worth watching: between November and March there is genuine volume in both directions, which is not true of most long-haul corridors. Give us the fortnight you could travel in and we will flag what appears; current availability sits on our empty legs page.

Jet Sharing
Sharing places several parties on one aircraft going the same way on the same day, with the cost of the cabin divided between them rather than falling on one client. On this route the arithmetic sits somewhere between the Mediterranean and Australia, and it is worth setting out.
Divide seventy thousand euros among thirteen and the seat is a little over five thousand, which is well above a first class ticket but within reach of people who would not otherwise consider flying privately at all. That makes this one of the few long-haul sectors where sharing genuinely changes who can travel, rather than simply softening the bill for someone who was going anyway.
When it works on this corridor
– The December and January season, when the direction of travel is predictable and departures cluster in the same fortnight in both directions;
– Safari groups, which travel on fixed lodge dates and are frequently smaller than the cabin they need;
– Corporate parties to Johannesburg, where two companies with business in the same week are more common than either realises.
The shared seat keeps what matters on an overnight sector: a flat bed, a private terminal at both ends and luggage measured by the hold rather than an allowance. Tell us the week rather than the date, along with how many are travelling, and we will hold the request against departures we already know about.

Helicopter charter
Helicopters do three quite separate jobs in South Africa, and only one of them is the transfer work familiar from Europe. Cape Town uses them for scenery that no road reaches; Johannesburg for the traffic; and the reserves for the last few miles where even an airstrip is too far.
Camps Bay, Clifton and Bantry Bay, against forty minutes or more when the city is busyabout 10 minutes
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and the Cape Point coastline, and among the best scenic flying anywhere20 to 40 minutes
against an hour on the highway at the wrong time of dayabout 10 minutes
where the airstrip is still some distance from the camp, or where the lodge has its own padthe final leg
the resort and the game reserve north-west of Johannesburgabout 30 minutes
subject to a certified deck or a landing site approved in advancedirect
Local conditions worth planning around
– The Cape wind. The south-easter blows hard through the southern summer and it grounds rotary flying more often than visitors expect, so a Cape Town helicopter plan needs a road alternative built into the same day;
– Altitude on the Highveld. Johannesburg sits at around 1,700 metres and the summer afternoons are hot, which costs a single-engine machine performance exactly when it is carrying most. Morning departures are planned for a reason;
– Reserve access is arranged through the lodge rather than independently. Most private reserves control their own airspace and landing sites, and the booking has to go through them.
The machines in regular service here reflect that mix. The Airbus H125 does most of the game and mountain work and is genuinely at home in heat and altitude, which is the reason it dominates the African fleet. The wider-cabin H130 handles the scenic and resort transfers around Cape Town, and twin-engine H145 and AgustaWestland AW109 aircraft take the coastal legs and the yacht work where two engines over water are the sensible minimum. We book the rotary leg alongside the rest of the itinerary so the crews work to one schedule.

South African trips from the desk notes: six recent bookings
How the route works once the dates are settled. Six jobs taken from the booking notes of recent seasons, surnames shortened to initials and a few particulars altered.
SAFARI · JET THEN TURBOPROP
The B. family: Sabi Sand for a week in June
London - Johannesburg on a Falcon 7X, then a PC-12 to the reserve · 6 pax
Ten and a half hours overnight, breakfast at Lanseria, and airborne again by mid-morning on a Pilatus that landed on the lodge strip. They had asked whether the jet could do the second leg. It cannot: the strip is gravel and short. What the turboprop bought them was arriving at the camp rather than an hour away from it down a dirt road.
PERMIT · THE NINE-PASSENGER THRESHOLD
A mining company whose group grew by one
London - Johannesburg, Bombardier Global 6000 · 9 pax
The booking started at eight passengers and a fortnight of lead time, which is comfortable here. Adding a ninth crossed the threshold where a foreign operator permit applies, and that approval wants about a month with certified documents sent by courier. We caught it at the quote stage. Had it surfaced a week out, the trip would have moved rather than the paperwork.
CAPE TOWN · NEW YEAR, BOOKED IN JULY
Mr T. W.: the hardest week of the year on this route
Farnborough - Cape Town, Gulfstream G650ER, about 11 h · 8 pax
The southern summer peak is tighter in Cape Town than August is anywhere in the Mediterranean, because slots, parking and aircraft all constrain at once. Booked six months out, which is what those dates need. The aircraft dropped the party and repositioned to Johannesburg for the week rather than holding a stand at the Cape.
LANSERIA · THE AIRPORT NOBODY ASKS FOR
A group heading to Sandton for two days of meetings
London - Lanseria, Dassault Falcon 7X, about 10 h 30 min · 5 pax
The request said OR Tambo because that is the name people know. Lanseria sits on the right side of the city for Sandton, does not normally need a slot and moves aircraft through faster. Same flight, same price, and roughly forty minutes saved at each end. We now suggest it by default for the northern suburbs.
DOGS · CARGO, EVEN ON A PRIVATE FLIGHT
The K. family relocating with two dogs
London - Johannesburg, Gulfstream G550 · 4 pax, animals separately
They assumed the dogs would fly in the cabin with them, which is how it works on most of our routes and not on this one. South Africa requires animals to arrive as manifested cargo. The good news was the rest: from Britain there is no quarantine when the permit and certificate are right, so the dogs cleared and went home with them the same day.
EMPTY LEG · NORTHBOUND AFTER CHRISTMAS
Ms A. N.: an aircraft going back to Europe anyway
Cape Town - London, Global 6000 empty leg, about 11 h · 4 pax
Just after Christmas, when the aircraft that had delivered families for the holidays were heading back north with nobody aboard. The saving against a fresh one-way was close to two thirds. This corridor produces legs in real volume between November and March, which is unusual for a sector this long and worth knowing if the dates are flexible.
Frequently asked questions about flying to South Africa
1Can a private jet fly from London to South Africa nonstop?
Yes, and most do. Johannesburg is about 4,921 nautical miles from London and Cape Town about 5,250, both comfortably within range of any large-cabin aircraft. A Gulfstream G550, a Falcon 7X, a Global 6000, a Falcon 8X, a G650ER or a Global 7500 all fly it in one leg. Flying time is about 10 hours 30 minutes to Johannesburg and 11 hours to Cape Town.
2How much does a private jet to South Africa cost?
From about 68,000 EUR one way to Johannesburg on a Falcon 7X and 88,000 EUR to Cape Town on a Falcon 8X. A G650ER to Johannesburg starts near 92,000 EUR, a Global 7500 to Cape Town near 104,000 EUR, and an airliner cabin for nineteen or more from around 148,000 EUR. Cape Town prices above Johannesburg because it is further south.
3Which Johannesburg airport should a private jet use?
Lanseria (FALA) for most trips. It is privately owned, sits closer to Sandton and the northern suburbs, does not normally require slots and moves aircraft through faster than the main hub. OR Tambo (FAOR) is the right answer where a connection or schedule demands it. Both run 24 hours with full customs and immigration.
4How far ahead should I book a private jet to South Africa?
For a small group, days rather than weeks. The exception is the passenger count: a foreign operator carrying more than eight passengers commercially needs a permit that realistically takes about a month, with certified documents couriered rather than scanned. The other pressure point is Cape Town from December to February, where slots and parking need months of notice.
5Can my dog travel with me on a private jet to South Africa?
Not in the cabin. South Africa requires cats and dogs to arrive as manifested cargo on a scheduled service, so the animal travels separately even on a private flight. The good news is that dogs arriving from the United Kingdom with correct paperwork face no quarantine, and cats are exempt regardless. A veterinary import permit is applied for six to twelve weeks ahead, and the return to Britain needs a rabies blood test drawn before you leave.
