Private jet charter in New York

A private jet from London reaches New York in about seven hours, which is long enough to make the aircraft the first decision and the airport the second. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever aircraft the crossing calls for. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Most private jets land at one airfield in New Jersey, a county airport to the north keeps a calmer temper, and three airline airports take business aircraft only on conditions, so the choice runs from the aircraft to the airport to the paperwork the United States asks of everyone aboard.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in New York depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. On a crossing of this length the choice between a nonstop long-range cabin and a smaller jet with a fuel stop moves the price more than any other item. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, a Bombardier Challenger 350 with a stop at Gander and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to New York?

The nonstop crossing from London to Teterboro takes about 6 h 55 min in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, and a little less from Scotland. We allow a routed distance of 2,899 to 3,130 nautical miles depending on the British field, against a published range of 3,200 nautical miles for a Challenger 350. On paper that aircraft clears the sector from the London fields by less than 100 nautical miles, which is not a margin anyone plans an Atlantic crossing around, so the Challenger makes the trip in two legs with a stop at Gander in Newfoundland. New York keeps Eastern time, five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure from London lands before lunch, New York time. The times below assume the headwind that is normal going west. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning, British time, and the wheels touch down at Teterboro a few minutes before eleven in New York. The airfield lies about 12 km from Times Square in a straight line, and a car from the FBO covers it in a time that depends entirely on the Hudson crossings and the hour. The westbound day is long in the pleasant way: the flight takes 6 h 55 min, the clocks go back five hours, and a client who leaves after breakfast can sit down to a late lunch in Midtown with the afternoon still ahead. Coming home the sums run the other way. An evening departure from Teterboro lands in Britain the next morning, with the same winds now pushing from behind.

Nonstop or Gander: the question that decides the aircraft

– A Global or Gulfstream long-range jet flies London to Teterboro in one go and is the answer for most parties of five or more, for anyone who wants to sleep on the way, and for anyone who would rather not stand on a ramp in Newfoundland with the cabin door open;

– A Challenger 350 has a published range of 3,200 nautical miles and the sector from Biggin Hill is roughly 3,130, so there is no room for a westbound headwind or the fuel reserves. It stops at Gander, which lies almost on the track: the route through it measures 3,106 nautical miles from Farnborough against 3,105 direct, so the stop costs an hour on the ground and almost no extra distance. For four people who do not mind it, this is the sensible buy;

– Light jets and turboprops do not cross the Atlantic from Britain as a rule. If the trip needs a light jet at the New York end, the crossing is flown by a larger aircraft and the small one is booked locally for the onward legs.

Why the American legs are the cheap part

A trip to New York is usually priced as one long crossing and a few short hops, and the hops cost a fraction of the crossing. A flight from Teterboro to Boston Hanscom in a Citation CJ3+ starts at £5,300, against £85,600 for the Atlantic leg in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, so adding Boston or a Florida weekend moves the total much less than people expect. The sensible way to plan it is to book the large aircraft for the ocean and ask us to quote the regional aircraft separately, since a light or midsize jet based on the east coast will almost always beat a long-range jet left on the apron for a week.

Before you accept an American onward quote

– Who is allowed to fly it. The United States treats a charter between two American points as a domestic job. A non-US aircraft may carry passengers between two US points only if they arrived on it from abroad or are leaving on it for abroad, so the jet that brought you from London can take you on to Boston, while a hop for another party is normally flown by a US-registered aircraft. Each US leg flown by a foreign aircraft also needs its own permit to proceed from customs;

– Which airport, and what it asks of the aircraft. Teterboro wants permission before every arrival, JFK and LaGuardia work with slots, and a quote that says only New York has not told you which of these rules applies to your date;

– Whether the itinerary is one booking. New York to Boston to Palm Beach over a week costs less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you and no empty positioning flight is added at each stop. Leaving the United States for Britain also needs its own advance data filing for the aircraft, and it is built into the same plan.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for the New York run:

Long-range jets, and where most bookings land

The aircraft built for this crossing. Each of them is planned to fly from London to Teterboro without stopping, and the nonstop prices above are built on them. Teterboro also has a weight limit of 100,000 lb for takeoff, so the very heaviest types are checked against it before we quote.

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h

Super-midsize and large, with a stop at Gander

The cheaper crossing for a smaller party, with the fuel stop built into the schedule. Good for up to six people with ordinary luggage and an extra hour of patience. The Falcon 900LX and the G450 can sometimes reach New York nonstop, and we confirm with the operator whether a stop is needed for your date and load.

Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

For the last stretch and not for the crossing: Teterboro to a Manhattan heliport, or Manhattan to the Hamptons. A landing site is agreed before the quote, so the request goes in early.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Aircraft that can cross the Atlantic are fewer than the ones that serve Europe, and their positions change daily, so a long-range jet already in London or Paris is often cheaper than one that has to be brought over from North America first. The ocean is crossed in both directions every day, so when the first leg is a return to Britain a day or two after our trip, we look for an aircraft that is coming this way anyway.

Business aviation airports in New York

The city is ringed by airports, and each of them does something different for a private jet. Three of them are airline airports that treat business traffic as a guest, so it helps to know which is which before a quote arrives.

Airport What it gives you
Teterboro, New Jersey
TEB / KTEB
The default choice, about 12 km from Times Square in a straight line and on the New Jersey side of the Hudson. Two runways of 7,000 ft (2,134 m) and 6,013 ft (1,833 m). Atlantic Aviation, Jet Aviation and Signature are the FBOs, all listed as open round the clock with customs on site. Every operation needs prior permission from the airport, requested at least 24 hours ahead, and the takeoff weight limit is 100,000 lb. Customs officers inspect arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15, and the airport asks operators to avoid non-essential flights between 23:00 and 06:00
Westchester County, White Plains
HPN / KHPN
The calmer alternative, about 41 km north of Times Square, with runways of 6,549 ft (1,996 m) and 4,451 ft (1,357 m). Signature (West), Million Air and Atlantic (East) handle business aircraft and customs inspect arrivals at the FBOs. Aircraft up to 120,000 lb are accepted unless the airport manager agrees otherwise, intersection takeoffs are not allowed, and operators are asked to keep to a voluntary quiet period from midnight to 06:30. A good choice for Connecticut, Westchester and the north of the city
Newark Liberty, New Jersey
EWR / KEWR
An airline airport about 17 km from Times Square, where Signature is the only business aviation FBO listed. Customs officers are available round the clock, which makes it a fallback: an arrival after 23:15, when Teterboro's inspection hours end, can be routed here or to JFK. We confirm the arrival terms for your date with the handler before the aircraft leaves Britain
John F. Kennedy, Queens
JFK / KJFK
The airline gateway, about 22 km from Times Square. Customs are available round the clock and Modern Aviation is listed as the FBO. JFK is slot-controlled under the FAA high density rules, so a private operator needs permission to land or depart in the peak hours, and noise abatement procedures apply from 23:00 to 07:00. Useful for a late-night arrival or an onward airline connection, and rarely the first choice for a business jet
LaGuardia, Queens
LGA / KLGA
The closest to Midtown, about 10 km from Times Square. Business aircraft use the historic Marine Air Terminal and every operation needs an FAA slot authorisation obtained beforehand. There is no customs on the field, so a flight from abroad cannot arrive here, and noise abatement runs from midnight to 06:00. Fine for a domestic hop from Boston or Washington and no use for a flight from Britain
Republic, Farmingdale
FRG / KFRG
On Long Island, about 48 km from Times Square, with runways of 6,833 ft (2,083 m) and 5,516 ft (1,681 m). Modern Aviation and Atlantic Aviation are the FBOs. A customs office is in the terminal but staffed by appointment only, and immigration services must be requested four hours before arrival. The sensible airfield for Long Island and the north shore
Long Island MacArthur, Islip
ISP / KISP
About 75 km from Times Square, with a main runway of 7,006 ft (2,135 m), long enough for a large-cabin jet. Sheltair Aviation is a tenant, and a customs facility for international arrivals by private aircraft can clear non-US citizens. The tower is closed from midnight to 06:00. The airport for the Hamptons by road and for the south shore of Long Island
East Hampton
HTO / KJPX
About 160 km from New York in the Hamptons, with a main runway of 4,255 ft (1,297 m) and a shorter second one, so it suits turboprops, light jets and helicopters better than a large-cabin aircraft. A helicopter from Manhattan takes about 32 minutes, and the road can take three hours or more. A jet for the Hamptons usually lands at Islip or Republic and the party finishes by road or helicopter

Four points settle most New York arrivals:

Choose the airport

Teterboro for almost everything, Westchester when the destination is north of the city, Islip or Republic for Long Island. JFK and Newark are the late-night back-ups, and LaGuardia is for domestic hops only. We put the airport and the FBO in writing, and the driver's order carries the FBO name as well.

Hours and noise

Teterboro asks operators to avoid non-essential flights from 23:00 to 06:00, and Runway 24 has a stricter departure noise limit between 22:00 and 07:00. Westchester asks for a quiet period from midnight to 06:30. Both are voluntary, but a late arrival still needs the handler's agreement, so we agree the times in advance.

Border and passport

British citizens need an ESTA or a visa. The aircraft needs advance data sent to US customs and permission to land. On a private flight the ESTA normally works only if the operator holds the right status, so we check that before we quote. Details are in the border section below.

Car and late nights

Customs officers at Teterboro and Westchester inspect arrivals between 07:30 and 23:15. A flight due later than that goes to Newark or JFK, or waits for the morning. For a private party a car from the FBO is the normal plan, and we book it with the handler so the driver is waiting at the right door.

business aviation

Border, ESTA and American customs

The United States is not in the Schengen area or any shared travel zone with Britain, so every passenger is checked by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival. British citizens with a full British passport need an ESTA or a visa. The ESTA covers short visits of up to 90 days, is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and costs about US$40, roughly £30. It is applied for online, and the border service encourages applications at least 72 hours before travel. The passport has to be valid for the whole stay. Approval is not a guarantee of entry, and officers may ask to look at a phone or social media accounts. Anyone with an arrest, a criminal record or a past refusal should check the position before booking, and business travel for a US company may not be covered by an ESTA at all.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

The rule that surprises owners of private aircraft is the carrier. Visa-free travel on an ESTA normally applies on a flight whose operator has signed up to the Visa Waiver Program, and business aviation operators can hold that status as well as airlines. Passengers on an aircraft whose operator does not hold it normally need a visa, ESTA or not. Crew are handled separately, under their own visa rules. We ask the operator for its status when the quote is prepared, because it can decide which aircraft is chosen.

For the aircraft there is a separate set of steps, and the operator, the handler and our team carry them out. The pilot sends the crew and passenger manifest electronically, through the eAPIS system, no later than 60 minutes before departure, and the same applies on the way out of the United States. The pilot also requests permission to land from customs at the arrival airport; at Teterboro the fact sheet we work from asks for it at least two hours before departing the foreign airport, and the permission is valid for 30 minutes either side of the estimated arrival time. Outside that window it has to be requested again. Customs officers meet the aircraft at the FBO, and the operator names the FBO when the permission is requested. Live animals, weapons, hunting trophies and commercial goods have to be notified to customs in advance. We confirm the procedure with the operator for each trip, because the rules change and a booking has to follow the text in force and not a memory of it.

The choice of airport is partly a choice of customs hours. Teterboro and Westchester clear arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15 every day, Newark and JFK have customs round the clock, Republic sees arrivals by appointment with four hours' notice for immigration, and LaGuardia has no customs at all. Teterboro processes passenger flights and not cargo, so a freight consignment travels separately.

The way home has its own formalities. Britons and Irish citizens need no permission to enter the United Kingdom, while most other visa-free visitors need a UK electronic travel authorisation. For the aircraft, a General Aviation Report is filed with the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than two hours before departure. The penalties for getting it wrong are real: a fine of £2,500 for a first landing at an aerodrome that is not a regulated one, and £2,000 for each passenger carried without permission. The operator and handler file the report, and we check that it is done.

From the apron to Times Square

In New York the airport you choose can put an hour of traffic between you and the meeting, or none at all. Most of the airfields sit within 25 km of Midtown, the far ones on Long Island and in Westchester lie 40 to 75 km out, and the figures below are straight-line distances, so the road is always longer.

Teterboro to Times Square
the usual landing for a business jet, on the New Jersey side of the Hudson
about 12 km straight-line
LaGuardia to Times Square
the closest airport, reserved by slot and without customs
about 10 km straight-line
Newark to Times Square
the airline airport with round-the-clock customs
about 17 km straight-line
JFK to Times Square
the late-night alternative, in Queens
about 22 km straight-line
Westchester County to Times Square
for trips to the north of the city, Connecticut and the Hudson valley
about 41 km straight-line
Republic to Times Square
for Long Island and the north shore
about 48 km straight-line
Islip to Times Square
for the south shore and the road to the Hamptons
about 75 km straight-line

Flying to New York with a dog or a cat

The United States asks little paperwork of a dog arriving from Britain and more of a dog going home. The animal sits with you in the cabin, and the flight is long enough that most dogs sleep through it. What matters is the timing of three things: the American entry form before you leave, the British certificate for the return, which has a short life, and a tapeworm treatment inside a narrow window.

private flight with animals

What the two countries ask for:

  • For a dog entering the United States from Britain, a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The form is free, completed online, and a separate one is needed for each dog. The receipt is valid for six months and can be used for several entries if the dog has not been in a country on the high-risk list;
  • The dog must be at least six months old, carry a microchip that a universal scanner can read, and look healthy on arrival. Britain is not on the high-risk list, and a dog that has not been in a listed country in the last six months needs no extra rabies paperwork, though vaccination is strongly recommended. There is no restriction on the airport of entry;
  • Customs must be told in advance about any live animal on board, and we agree the arrival point with the handler beforehand;
  • For the return to Britain, the United States is a "part 2" listed country: a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel, with the animal arriving in Britain within those ten days. A pet passport or animal health certificate is not accepted. The microchip must be fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination, the animal must be at least 12 weeks old, and the primary vaccination must be at least 21 days old;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain. Cats are exempt. No more than five animals per traveller.

What catches owners out on the New York run

– The return certificate has to be dated inside ten days of travel, so a two-week stay means a vet appointment in America, and the tapeworm treatment must fall in its own window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. Book both before you leave Britain;

– The CDC receipt is for one dog and one departure country. A second dog needs a second form, and a dog that goes on to another country first may need a new one;

– A long crossing is a long day for an animal. Plan a walk before departure, and if you use a Gander stop, ask the handler whether the animal may leave the aircraft there. The hotel and any helicopter operator have to accept the animal separately.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. We also confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal on the way back into Britain.

The New York calendar: a General Assembly, a tennis fortnight and a marathon

The year in New York is set by the calendar of the city and not by the weather alone. September is the crowded month, winter brings the Florida traffic, and a handful of fixed dates decide when a Teterboro ramp is full. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

February
New York Fashion Week, held in February and again in September, runs seven to nine days in Lower Manhattan. Designers, buyers and editors fly in at the same time, and cars and rooms near the shows tighten
Late August
The US Open starts on the Sunday before the last Monday of August and runs for two weeks at Flushing Meadows in Queens, with more than a million visitors in a season. The middle weekend meets the Labor Day holiday, and private demand rises with it
September
The General Assembly of the United Nations opens on the third Tuesday of September, and the general debate starts the Tuesday after and runs nine working days. Delegations, security and motorcades fill the city, and fashion week returns at the same time. This is one of the busiest stretches of the year for private aviation
First Sunday of November
The New York City Marathon crosses all five boroughs, with tens of thousands of finishers. Hotels and cars tighten, and runners and their families arrive in the days before
Late November to January
The tree at Rockefeller Center is lit on the last Wednesday of November or the first Wednesday of December and stays up at least until 6 January. The weeks before Christmas bring family trips, shopping trips and a wave of leisure traffic
Summer weekends
The Hamptons season pushes demand towards Long Island and the helicopters out of Manhattan, and the roads and the small airfields fill up with it
December to March
The Florida runs begin, with families and executives heading south for the winter. Snow and de-icing can add time to any departure, so a tight connection is a bad idea

Why a General Assembly week costs more

Not the flying. The fleet that crosses the Atlantic is much smaller than the one that serves Europe, and the long-range aircraft that suit New York are wanted on the same days from every direction. What gets tight is ramp space at Teterboro, the cars and the crew duty hours, and Teterboro asks for permission before every arrival, so a late request has fewer choices. A booking made a fortnight before the General Assembly can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft brought over the ocean empty. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the peaks a crossing can usually be arranged within a few days.

Ways to bring the New York price down

  • Choose the aircraft for the crossing and not for the wish list. A Challenger 350 with a stop at Gander costs less than a long-range jet and takes nearly two hours longer once the stop is counted; for four people that is a fair trade;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A long-range jet coming from London needs less positioning than one coming from Dubai or Florida, and on a transatlantic sector positioning is a large share of the bill;
  • Be flexible by a day or two. A flight that avoids UN week and the US Open is easier to price, and a return that fits an empty leg is cheaper than a fresh charter;
  • Think about Westchester or Islip if the meeting is not in Manhattan. A quieter airport can save a long drive and a congested ramp.

Types of flights

New York produces a different mix from the European destinations we cover, because it is a financial capital, the seat of the United Nations and the starting point for a lot of North American travel.

  • Financial and corporate travel, tied to Wall Street and the Midtown head offices, where the dates are set by a meeting and the cabin by the size of the delegation;
  • Diplomatic travel around the General Assembly in September, with delegations, security staff and tight schedules;
  • Fashion, media and entertainment travel, which peaks around fashion week and the major events, with its own demands for privacy and for an FBO that can keep an arrival discreet;
  • Sport and leisure, from the US Open and the marathon to Christmas weekends and summer weeks in the Hamptons;
  • Onward journeys to Boston, Florida and the rest of the United States, using New York as the port of entry and a smaller jet from there.

The one-way and return question is worth a closer look. On a crossing of this length a same-week return is usually priced as two separate sectors, plus the crew's rest and hotel in New York, so we quote both options. Where the stay is short, leaving the aircraft at Teterboro and returning on the third day is often better value than flying home empty and coming back, and where the stay is a week or more, two one-way flights are cleaner than waiting.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the New York route they come from the pattern of events and seasons rather than from sheer volume, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where New York empty legs come from

– Event weeks. Aircraft arrive full for the General Assembly or the US Open and leave empty a day or two later, so the eastbound and westbound sectors both appear in the days after;

– Transatlantic positioning. A long-range jet that has taken a party from London to Teterboro often has to return, and that empty crossing is the one most worth looking for;

– The Florida rotation. Aircraft based in New York and Florida move between the two in the winter months, and the short northbound and southbound legs can be cheap.

Because the long-range fleet is small, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a New York match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In New York a helicopter is a tool for the edges of a trip and for the Hamptons run. The city's heliports are few, and noise rules limit what they allow, so a transfer is planned like a flight and not hailed like a taxi.

Teterboro to the Downtown Manhattan Heliport
about 17 km straight-line, to the pad at Pier 6 on the East River in the Financial District
on request
Teterboro to the East 34th Street Heliport
a public heliport on the East River, run by Atlantic Aviation, for Midtown meetings
on request
Manhattan to East Hampton
about 160 km, around 32 minutes by helicopter against three hours or more by road
on request

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. The Downtown Manhattan Heliport is the only one in the city that takes sightseeing flights, and there it is capped by a limit on the number a year, a lower limit on Saturdays and a ban on Sundays. Private transfers are a different matter, but we describe the purpose of the flight accurately when the slot is requested;

– The pad at the Downtown Manhattan Heliport is rated for aircraft up to 50,000 lb, so a corporate helicopter is not limited by size. The limits are noise, hours and the city's agreement, which is why a Manhattan landing is confirmed before a quote is sent;

– Weather sets the schedule. Fog, snow and low cloud can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a Hamptons transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day.

The machines used on this ground include the Airbus H125 for short transfers, the wider H130 for family parties, and the H135 and Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

New York charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

NONSTOP · THE LONG-RANGE CABIN

Six people, one stretch of the Atlantic

Farnborough - New York Teterboro, Bombardier Global 6000, about 6 h 55 min · 6 pax

A company team heading for a week of meetings, leaving mid-morning and landing in time for a late lunch. The reason for the larger cabin was less the seats than the luggage and the wish to work in the air without a stop. They were met at the FBO, the customs officer inspected the aircraft there, and the car was at the door.

GANDER STOP · THE SENSIBLE COMPROMISE

Four people, a Challenger and an hour in Newfoundland

Biggin Hill - New York Teterboro, Bombardier Challenger 350, about 7 h 40 min plus a stop · 4 pax

A smaller party that wanted to keep the budget down. The Challenger has no real margin on this sector with a westbound headwind, so the quote included the stop at Gander, a turn of about an hour with fuel and a leg stretch. The saving over a long-range jet was real, and nobody complained about the hour.

UN WEEK · FIXED DATES

A delegation for the opening of the General Assembly

London Luton - New York Teterboro, Gulfstream G550, about 6 h 55 min · 8 pax

The dates were set by the diplomatic calendar and not by the client. Eight people, a security detail and a request for a quiet arrival. The request for permission to land at Teterboro went in well ahead, the handler pre-arranged the customs check, and the return was booked at the same time so that the aircraft did not go back empty.

LAGUARDIA · NOT FOR THE ATLANTIC

A client who asked for the airport nearest to Midtown

Stansted - New York Teterboro, Bombardier Global 6000, about 6 h 55 min · 5 pax

They had seen LaGuardia on a map and asked for it by name. It has no customs and works by slot, so an aircraft arriving from Britain cannot land there. We explained that and landed at Teterboro, with a car waiting at the FBO. Had the party been flying on to Boston a week later, LaGuardia could have been the answer for that domestic leg.

A DOG ON BOARD · TWO CERTIFICATES

Three adults and a labrador for a ten-day stay

Edinburgh - New York Teterboro, Gulfstream G550, about 6 h 30 min · 3 pax + dog

The CDC form receipt was completed online before departure, and the Great Britain pet health certificate for the way home had to be dated inside ten days of the return flight. The tapeworm treatment fell between 24 and 120 hours before landing. We booked the vet appointment in New York together with the aircraft, and the whole thing was settled in one exchange of messages.

EMPTY LEG · THE WAY HOME

A jet already going your way

New York Teterboro - London Stansted, Bombardier Global 6000 empty leg, about 5 h 55 min · 4 pax

The aircraft had brought a party over for a long weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an evening departure that landed in Britain at breakfast time.

Frequently asked questions about flying to New York

1How long is a private jet flight from London to New York?

About 6 h 55 min nonstop in a Global 6000 from Farnborough, and a little less from Edinburgh or Glasgow in a Gulfstream G550. A Challenger 350 needs a stop at Gander and takes about 7 h 40 min in the air plus an hour on the ground. The routed distance for the nonstop fields is 2,899 to 3,130 nautical miles. New York is five hours behind Britain for most of the year, so a morning departure lands before lunch.

2How much does a private jet to New York cost?

From about £58,100 one way for a Challenger 350 from London Luton with a stop at Gander. A nonstop long-range jet starts from about £83,200 from Manchester and £85,600 from Farnborough, and a Gulfstream G550 from Edinburgh starts from £84,950. UN week in September, the US Open and the days before Christmas price above these figures.

3Which New York airport should a private jet use?

Teterboro (TEB / KTEB) in New Jersey for almost every trip. It is about 12 km from Times Square, has FBOs open round the clock and customs on site, and it needs permission for every arrival. Westchester County (HPN / KHPN) is the alternative for trips to the north of the city. JFK and Newark take late arrivals, and LaGuardia works by slot and has no customs, so it cannot take a flight from Britain.

4Do I need a visa or an ESTA to fly to New York?

British citizens with a full British passport need an ESTA or a visa. The ESTA allows visits of up to 90 days, is valid for two years or until the passport expires, and costs about US$40, roughly £30. On a private aircraft it normally works only if the operator holds Visa Waiver Program carrier status, which we check before we quote. The passport must be valid for the whole stay.

5What does a private jet need to land in the United States?

The pilot sends the crew and passenger manifest through the eAPIS system at least 60 minutes before departure and requests permission to land from customs, which at Teterboro means at least two hours before leaving the foreign airport. The permission is valid for 30 minutes either side of the estimated arrival time. Customs officers meet the aircraft at the FBO, and at Teterboro and Westchester they inspect arrivals from 07:30 to 23:15.

6Can I take my dog to New York on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Going out you need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, a microchip and a dog at least six months old that looks healthy on arrival. For the return, the United States is a part 2 country, so a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel is needed, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing.
