Private jet charter in Madagascar

Madagascar is among the longest private flights a British client is likely to ask for, about 5,087 nautical miles in a straight line from London to Antananarivo, a distance that only the largest long-range jets cover without a stop. The island covers about 592,800 square kilometres, and its roads are poor. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Outside the capital the services are limited, and we say plainly what we can arrange.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Madagascar depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Praetor 600 to Antananarivo with one technical stop in Cairo, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Madagascar?

Madagascar keeps East Africa Time all year, three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, so three hours ahead of London in winter and two hours ahead in summer. These are the sectors to Antananarivo, gate to gate:

Biggin Hill to Antananarivo
5,167 nautical miles, the basis for the price at the top of the page
about 13 h on a Praetor 600 with a stop in Cairo
Farnborough to Antananarivo
5,192 nautical miles, the usual choice for Surrey, Hampshire and the Thames Valley
about 13 h on a Praetor 600 with a stop in Cairo
Manchester to Antananarivo
5,238 nautical miles, the main departure for the north of England, flown nonstop
about 11 h 10 min on a Global 6000
Edinburgh to Antananarivo
5,377 nautical miles, the main Scottish departure, also flown nonstop
about 11 h 30 min on a Gulfstream G550

Why the stop, and why the airport rules matter

The Praetor 600 is quoted at roughly 4,000 nautical miles of range, and the direct line from London to Antananarivo is about 5,087. We plan the stop in Cairo, which splits the journey into about 1,963 and 3,204 nautical miles. A Global 6000 or a Gulfstream G550 flies the whole distance and saves the hour or so that a stop costs.

Ivato is listed as open round the clock, but also as needing a slot and mandatory handling, which we arrange alongside the landing permit. The airport stands at about 1,280 metres, where the thinner air takes something off take-off performance on a hot afternoon, and we check that for the type.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The same Biggin Hill departure on a Global 6000, nonstop, comes to about £137,350, which is £56,900 more than the Praetor with a stop;

– Nosy Be is 279 nautical miles closer to London than Antananarivo, so a party going straight there saves a little. A one-way price assumes the aircraft flies home empty; for a longer stay it waits, with parking and the crew's hotel as extra lines, or flies back and returns.

Private jet flights within Madagascar and to its neighbours

Nosy Be is 346 nautical miles from Antananarivo and Tolagnaro 391, so a hop inside the country is short in the air and a long day by road, but we do not sell internal flights on a British aircraft. These are the sectors we are asked for from the capital to the neighbours:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way

Domestic sectors and the neighbours

– A foreign aircraft does not usually carry passengers between two points inside one country, so the sectors inside Madagascar go on scheduled flights or a Malagasy operator, and we name the operator when we quote;

– Each neighbour has its own permits and entry rules. Mayotte and Réunion are French, while the Comoros, Mauritius, Kenya and South Africa need their own landing permits, which we check before we quote.

Business aviation airports in Madagascar

Antananarivo is the gateway for almost every charter, and Nosy Be is the second airport a private jet really uses. The others are regional fields with shorter runways and hours, and a large jet should not go there without a written check:

Airport Ground How it operates
Antananarivo Ivato International
TNR / FMMI
about 16 km north-west of the city, on the plateau at about 1,280 metres One asphalt runway, 11/29, of 3,100 metres (10,171 feet), with ILS and VOR/DME approaches and fire category 8. Listed as open 24 hours, with administration from 04:30 to 12:30 UTC. Airport of entry with customs and jet fuel. Slots are listed as required and handling as mandatory. Ivato has no business aviation terminal that we can name and describe. A flight-support directory lists Jetmate Aviation, JetPlus Aviation Services, International Flight Planning Solutions, JETEX and Just Aviation among its contacts. We choose the handler, then confirm in writing where the party is processed and who meets the aircraft.

Three points settle most Malagasy arrivals before a quote goes out:

Permit: apply early

The civil aviation authority, ACM, approves landings and overflights by foreign operators. Flight-support companies quote 24 to 48 working hours once the papers are complete, which is no official deadline, so we plan in days.

Papers and changes

The application asks for the registration, type and call sign, the route and the purpose of the flight, with certificates of registration and airworthiness. A change of aircraft or date can mean a fresh approval.

Slot and handler

Ivato is listed as needing both. We request them with the permit and ask for written confirmation of parking, fuel and arrival time before the aircraft leaves Britain.

Arriving from Britain: visa, health and the Foreign Office advice

British passengers deal with entry at the airport. The aircraft, on the other hand, needs its permit before it leaves Britain.

Visa
The Foreign Office says a stay of up to 15 days needs no visa, only an administration fee of about £9 on arrival and a return ticket. A longer stay needs a 30 or 60 day tourist visa, bought on arrival or at the Malagasy embassy in London
buy on arrival
Passport
valid for at least six months after arrival, with two blank pages
check the expiry
Health
yellow fever proof only if arriving from a risk country; malaria, dengue and mpox are listed risks, and vaccine advice should be checked eight weeks ahead
plan weeks ahead

Health measures at the border

The Foreign Office entry page describes extra health measures introduced in response to an Ebola outbreak. Travellers who have been in or passed through an affected country in the previous 21 days may not be allowed to enter unless exempt, and everyone completes a health declaration and screening on arrival. We check the page again on the day of departure, and the technical stop as well.

The Foreign Office advice, as published

On the pages we read, the Foreign Office does not tell British travellers to avoid any part of Madagascar altogether. It reports significant protests with violence and looting, mainly in Antananarivo, road closures during demonstrations, commonplace robberies and thefts, frequent armed robberies on main roads at night, and occasional kidnapping for ransom, usually of wealthy Malagasy.

It advises a recognised operator or a convoy and no night driving, and notes that from December to April many secondary roads are passable only by four-wheel-drive. In the south, between Ihosy, Toliara and Fort Dauphin, it calls the situation tense and says to reach Fort Dauphin by air.

Customs and the way home

Passengers and crew clear immigration and customs at the airport of entry, and the handler confirms in writing how a private party is processed. Food, fruit included, may not be brought in, and cash worth the equivalent of about £6,500 or more must be declared.

Coming home, a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation.

Which airport for which part of Madagascar

Antananarivo is the answer for the capital and the highlands, and for most of the country it is the first landing. The rest depends on where the trip ends:

Antananarivo and the highlands
the capital, Ambohimanga and the road east to the rainforest parks
Antananarivo Ivato
Nosy Be and the northern islands
the island resorts; the airport takes jets and has customs
Nosy Be Fascène
The far north
Antsiranana, also known as Diego Suarez, and the islands beyond it
Antsiranana Arrachart
East coast and Sainte-Marie
the seaport of Toamasina and the way to the whale island
Toamasina Ambalamanasy
The south
Tolagnaro, also known as Fort Dauphin, which the Foreign Office says to reach by air
Tolagnaro Marillac
The baobabs and the tsingy
around Morondava, whose strip serves scheduled flights and light aircraft, so a jet party lands at Ivato and continues locally
Antananarivo, then a local flight

Antananarivo, the islands and the rainforest: what our clients go for

The clients we hear from are mostly leisure travellers heading for Nosy Be and the wildlife parks, with a few business and official visitors who stay in the capital. Its Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is one of the island's three World Heritage properties; the other two are natural, the Rainforests of the Atsinanana, six national parks that include Masoala and Ranomafana, and the Andrefana Dry Forests in the west.

Madagascar is the home of the lemurs, and over 90 percent of its wildlife is found nowhere else. In the west the Tsingy de Bemaraha reserve lies about 150 kilometres north of Morondava, with the Avenue of the Baobabs about 20 kilometres from the town, and the road to the tsingy takes a four-wheel-drive roughly ten hours. Nosy Be is the largest and busiest tourist destination and the only place with large all-inclusive resorts. We confirm rooms, guides and cars before the aircraft.

The Malagasy year: the cyclone months and the dry ones

The island has a hot rainy season and a cooler dry one, and the Foreign Office dates the cyclone season from November to April:

November to April
the hot rainy season, with destructive cyclones that hit the coast hardest and can cut off remote places; the east and north take the worst from January to March
rainy
May to October
the cooler dry season, with June to August the peak for visitors, September the driest month, and lemurs easier to spot in winter
dry

The Malagasy calendar: whales, jazz and the national day

A few dates change how busy the country is:

26 June
Independence Day, a public holiday that marks independence from France
July to September
Humpback whales gather around the island of Sainte-Marie, with a whale festival in July and the best sightings in July and August
October
Madajazzcar, a jazz festival in Antananarivo, is usually held in October

What a holiday does to a flight plan

We apply early for a trip near any of these dates.

Flying to Madagascar with a dog or a cat

A pet can travel in the cabin of a private jet, but the Malagasy side needs a permit before the animal leaves Britain.

The facts to read before you book

A pet-travel guide describes a rabies vaccination from 12 weeks of age, given at least 21 days before travel, an ISO microchip, a health certificate from an official vet issued within 10 days of travel, and an import permit from the veterinary services, the Direction des Services Vétérinaires, obtained before the journey. It says no quarantine applies when the papers are complete, names Ivato as the only entry point, and does not mention private aircraft.

The guide is not an official source and contradicts itself on some details, so we obtain the requirements in writing from the Malagasy authorities before the aircraft is confirmed.

Coming home, a pet from a country outside the simple British scheme, as we understand Madagascar to be, needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, then a rabies blood test at least 30 days after it, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample. The wait is not required if the animal was vaccinated and blood-tested, with a British health certificate or an EU pet passport, before it left, which is why we ask owners to do the tests before the outward flight. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet 24 to 120 hours before landing in Britain. No more than five animals may travel with one person, and an animal that arrives without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

We confirm in writing which entry point will receive the animal and which papers are needed. Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species are set out in our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On a route this long and this thin they are rare, and we do not promise one.

Where Malagasy empty legs come from

– A charter that lands in Antananarivo or Nosy Be and does not wait, so the aircraft returns to Europe empty;

– Aircraft repositioned from East Africa or the Indian Ocean after another contract.

Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Malagasy empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Madagascar (Antananarivo) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Praetor 600 9 seats £33,800
UK (London Luton) - Madagascar (Antananarivo) Praetor 600 9 seats £34,000
Madagascar (Antananarivo) - UK (Birmingham) Challenger 605 12 seats £44,000
Madagascar (Antananarivo) - UK (Bristol) Challenger 605 12 seats £44,000
UK (Farnborough) - Madagascar (Antananarivo) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £53,950
UK (Manchester) - Madagascar (Antananarivo) Global 6000 13 seats £59,350

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Luton to Antananarivo with nine aboard works out at about £3,800 a seat, and with four aboard about £8,500.

Helicopter charter

Helicopters are a northern affair. A booking platform lists an operator, MTT Aviation Services North, that runs tours and transfers from a helipad at Hellville, on Nosy Be, to the islands around it, and a lodge on a private island, Miavana, flies its guests by its own helicopter from Antsiranana or Nosy Be.

We found no operator for the capital or the interior that we can name and verify. A helicopter carrying passengers between two Malagasy places is normally a Malagasy one, so we confirm the machine, the crew and each landing site.
