Private jet charter in Tonga

Tonga lies about 9,310 nautical miles from Britain in a straight line, almost on the far side of the globe, and a private jet reaches it in two long legs with one stop in the United States. Private Jets UK plans the crossing, the landing permit and the handling at Fua'amotu, the one airport in the kingdom where a long-range jet is expected to land. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Tonga is a small destination with modest airport services, so below we say plainly what is confirmed, what is only listed in directories and what we ask the authorities in writing.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Tonga depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, a Bombardier Global 6000 to Fua'amotu International Airport at Tongatapu with one technical stop at Seattle Boeing Field, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Tonga?

The straight line from Luton to Tongatapu is about 9,310 nautical miles, while the longest-range business jets are published at 7,500 to 7,700. The route therefore breaks at Seattle: 4,303 nautical miles across the Atlantic and Canada, then 5,215 over the Pacific, 208 more than the direct line. Tonga keeps UTC+13 all year with no summer time, thirteen hours ahead of Britain in winter and twelve in summer. Times are westbound and count flying time only:

London to Nuku'alofa, Global 6000 via Seattle
9,518 nautical miles from Luton in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Boeing Field
about 21 h 10 min plus the stop
Nuku'alofa to London, Global 6000 via Seattle
9,518 nautical miles, helped on the Atlantic by the prevailing westerly winds
about 17 h 55 min plus the stop
Seattle to Tongatapu, the Pacific leg
5,215 nautical miles of open ocean, with Honolulu the usual fallback
about 11 h 35 min
Tongatapu to Vava'u, Citation CJ3+
180 nautical miles north to the whale and sailing islands, gate to gate
about 55 min

The day that goes missing, and the airport clock

A Global 6000 that leaves Luton at eight in the morning in winter spends about 21 hours 10 minutes in the air and an hour in Seattle, and touches down at Fua'amotu at about seven in the evening on the following calendar day, because Tonga is thirteen hours ahead. That is close to the end of the listed airport day, which runs to about 19:30 local time, so for a safe margin we plan an earlier departure from Britain.

The way home returns the day. Leaving Tongatapu at eight in the morning, the same aircraft flies about 17 hours 55 minutes plus the stop and lands in Britain at about two in the afternoon of the same calendar day in winter, because the clocks fall back thirteen hours.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Three things worth knowing about these figures

– From Luton a Global 6000 with the stop at Seattle starts at £253,100. A Global 7500 on the same routing comes to £321,800, and a Gulfstream G550 from Edinburgh to £257,700;

– The Seattle to Tongatapu leg of 5,215 nautical miles is long for a Global 6000, whose published range is 6,000, and a headwind can decide the question. When the margin is thin, the crew adds a landing at Honolulu, which brings the total to about 9,583 nautical miles. The G550, G650ER and Global 7500 carry more reserve on this leg;

– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Tonga and to its neighbours

Tonga is a kingdom of 171 islands in three main groups, Tongatapu, Ha'apai and Vava'u, and there is little of a domestic network to price. Only two runways are long enough for a business jet: Fua'amotu on Tongatapu and Lupepau'u in the Vava'u group. The rest are short strips for the turboprops of the national airline. The table shows the sectors we are asked about most:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way
Nuku'alofa - Vava'u (Tonga)
180 nm / 333 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7
about 55 min from £5,300
Nuku'alofa - Apia (Samoa)
499 nm / 924 km
Citation CJ3+
up to 7
about 1 h 45 min from £7,500
Nuku'alofa - Nadi (Fiji)
487 nm / 902 km
Citation XLS+
up to 9
about 1 h 40 min from £9,200
Nuku'alofa - Auckland (New Zealand)
1,125 nm / 2,084 km
Challenger 350
up to 9
about 3 h from £22,800

Two things worth knowing about the sectors from Nuku'alofa

– Vava'u is the one domestic jet sector, and it is short. Its airport is listed with customs and immigration and with limited hours, and fuel there is not certain, so the aircraft takes enough from Tongatapu to come back. The island group is where the whale-watching, sailing and game fishing are;

– Nadi, Apia and Auckland are the practical neighbours. All three are international airports, and a party that wants Fiji, Samoa or New Zealand after Tonga can continue on the same jet, since the long-range aircraft is already in position. Samoa asks for its own landing permit well ahead.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. Large jet (Legacy 600)£4,900 - 5,800/h
Long-haul jet (Global 5000, G550, Falcon 7X)£5,800 - 8,800/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. For Tonga the choice follows the distance:

Turboprops

Not for the crossing. They belong on short hops in the Pacific, and the national airline's small aircraft already serve the outer islands.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Mid-size jets

Regional aircraft here, for Vava'u, Nadi, Apia or Auckland. From Britain they would need several extra stops, so we do not offer them for the whole journey.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Ultra-long range

The class that makes the trip practical. The Global 6000 is the entry point for the Seattle routing; the others add cabin size and fuel margin.

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Business aviation airports in Tonga

Fua'amotu is the answer, and the only answer, for a long-haul jet. It has a runway of about 2,700 metres that takes aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 767, the customs and immigration officers and the only reliable jet fuel in the country. The services are modest, and a private jet fits into the rhythm of the scheduled flights from Auckland, Nadi and Sydney. The table lists the fields on either side:

Airport Ground How it operates
Fua'amotu International
TBU / NFTF
South side of Tongatapu, listed at 15 to 20 km from Nuku'alofa The gateway and the only airport we plan a long-haul jet into. One asphalt runway, 11/29, of about 2,670 to 2,680 metres by 45, with VOR/DME and NDB approaches and no ILS. A grass crosswind strip lies beside it. Directories list slots as not required and handling as optional. The fire category is listed as 5, which is low for a large cabin jet, so we raise it with the operator at the permit stage. The airport began as a wartime bomber base
Hours
Listed: Monday to Saturday
06:30 to 19:30 local time, 17:30 to 06:30 UTC The airport is not open around the clock and is listed as closed on Sundays except in distress. Officers attend around the scheduled flights, so a private arrival needs the airport, customs and the handler arranged beforehand. A charge for night landings and take-offs is listed at US$302
Handling and fuel
Air Terminal Services; Pacific Energy
At the airport Air Terminal Services is listed as the ground handler and also assists with border control. There is no business aviation terminal of the Farnborough kind. Jet A-1 is supplied by Pacific Energy at a government-set price, and Fua'amotu is the one airport we can rely on for fuel
Customs and immigration
Listed on site
Arrival hall of the terminal Fua'amotu is an airport of entry with customs and immigration. Directories describe officers as present from three hours before scheduled departures to three hours after scheduled arrivals, which is why we agree the times for a private flight in writing
Vava'u (Lupepau'u)
VAV / NFTV
About 10 km from Neiafu, 180 nautical miles from Tongatapu The second airport of entry, with a bitumen runway of about 1,700 metres by 30, 08/26. One directory lists an ILS and customs and immigration in a short working day, from about 08:30 to 16:30 local time, while an older handbook says only Fua'amotu sells fuel. A destination for a mid-size jet, not for the crossing
Ha'apai, 'Eua and the Niuas
HPA / NFTL, EUA, NTT, NFO
Strips of 800 to 1,200 metres Lifuka in Ha'apai has a bitumen runway of about 1,200 metres, 'Eua about 800, and the two Niuas about 1,060 to 1,085 of coral and grass. None sells fuel, and none is a place for a business jet
Seattle Boeing Field
BFI / KBFI
5,215 nautical miles from Tongatapu Our stop on the way out. The main runway is 10,007 by 200 feet, the airport is open around the clock and is an airport of entry, and three FBOs are listed. Everyone on board clears United States customs here
Nadi, Apia and Auckland
NAN / NFFN, APW / NSFA, AKL / NZAA
487 nautical miles to Nadi, 499 to Apia, 1,125 to Auckland The realistic diversion fields for a heavy jet if Fua'amotu is closed, and Sunday is the day to remember. Nadi has a runway of about 3,200 metres and runs around the clock, Auckland is the largest, Apia lies about as far as Nadi

Permit: 24 hours at least

Non-scheduled flights need prior permission, listed as lodged with Tonga Airports Limited at least 24 hours before departure during official working hours, and a technical stop needs the same. The request names the operator, the aircraft and registration, the charterer, the routes and times, the passengers and the purpose. We plan for a week.

Papers: declarations

An older handbook lists four copies of the general declaration and the passenger manifest, divided between customs, agriculture and immigration. We confirm the current set with the handler before the aircraft leaves.

Sunday and the evening

With the airport listed as closed on Sundays and open until about 19:30 on the other days, an arrival is planned for the middle of a working day. A delay at Seattle can push the landing past the closing time, and the diversion is a long flight.

Arriving from Britain: passports, entry rules and what to declare

Tonga is an independent kingdom with its own border rules. A private flight from London arrives as an international flight, lands at Fua'amotu and is cleared by the customs and immigration officers there. The rules are short, and the strictest part is biosecurity.

Passport
valid for at least six months after the date you arrive in Tonga, for every passenger, children included
check before booking
Visa
British citizens can stay for up to 30 days without a visa in advance, and border officials issue one free on arrival; a longer stay is extended through the Immigration Department
no visa, 30 days
Onward ticket
you may be asked for an onward or return ticket, proof of funds and confirmed accommodation; on a private flight the first is the itinerary we issue
agreed beforehand
ESTA for the US stop
an approved ESTA or a visa is needed for the landing at Seattle, where everyone on board clears the United States
apply before departure
Cash and goods
valuables worth 500 pa'anga (about £160) or more are declared, cash or travellers' cheques over 10,000 pa'anga go on the customs form, and plant, animal and food products must be declared
declare both

Health, and the way home

The government travel advice does not list a health declaration or a yellow fever rule for Tonga, and it points travellers to the TravelHealthPro guide for vaccinations. A party that adds a stop in another country checks the rules of that country.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation. The stop at Seattle is a second clearance, this time out of the United States.

Getting from the airport to Nuku'alofa and the other islands

Fua'amotu is on the south side of Tongatapu, so every transfer starts with the road to the capital. The distances in directories differ, which is why we ask the handler for the vehicle and the time on the day:

Nuku'alofa
the capital and the harbour on the north coast of Tongatapu, with most of the hotels, restaurants and offices; the airport is listed at 15 to 20 km, and there is no public bus, only hotel pick-ups and taxis
15 to 20 km
Vava'u
the northern group, about 180 nautical miles from Tongatapu, where visitors base themselves at Neiafu, ten kilometres from the airport
about 55 min by jet
Ha'apai
the middle group, reached by a short flight from Tongatapu or by sea; the strip on Lifuka is for turboprops
by Lulutai or boat
'Eua
the island across the water from Tongatapu, with an 800 metre strip served by the national airline
short hop

Tonga: what our clients go for

Tonga has just over 100,000 people, more than 70 percent of them on Tongatapu, spread across 45 inhabited islands out of 171. Tongan and English are both official, the currency is the pa'anga, and the country is a monarchy. The Sabbath is written into the constitution, and on Sundays shops close and commerce and entertainment stop, and the main airport is listed as closed on that day.

The draws are the sea and the quiet: humpback whales, which visitors can swim with in season, sailing and game fishing in Vava'u, the beaches and the cruise-ship harbour at Neiafu, and the pace of Tongatapu around Nuku'alofa.

The year in Tonga: cool and dry, warm and wet

The seasons are separated by temperature and rain, and by the cyclone calendar:

July to September
the cool and dry months, with temperatures of roughly 16 to 21 degrees Celsius, and the whale season
dry, whales
December to April
the warm period, with temperatures often above 32 degrees and March typically the wettest month; Tongatapu receives about 1,800 millimetres a year
warm, wet
1 November to 30 April
the official cyclone season, although a cyclone can form outside the window
cyclone risk

Weather is a planning problem, not an exception

With a single jet-capable runway on the main island, a closed Fua'amotu means a long diversion to Nadi, Apia or Auckland. In the cyclone months we keep the return date flexible. The figures on this page, from £253,100 one way, describe an ordinary week.

The Tonga calendar: whales, Heilala and the royal holidays

A few occasions fill the hotels, the boats and the flights:

July to October
Humpback whale season. Swimming with whales is legal only in these months, with the best encounters listed for August and September, and Vava'u and Ha'apai listed from mid-July to mid-October
End of June, first week of July
The Heilala Festival, the largest of the year, with the Miss Heilala pageant, a float parade, brass bands and food events, and the king's birthday holiday, listed as 4 July; hotels fill with Tongans who live abroad
4 November
Constitution Day, remembering the constitution enacted by King Tupou I in 1875, with singing and dancing shows, especially in Nuku'alofa

What a holiday does to a flight plan

A public holiday shuts the offices that sign the paperwork, and Sundays shut the airport. When a holiday meets a weekend, the working days available for the permit and the handling are fewer than they look. We book the handler and the transfer with the flight.

Flying to Tonga with a dog or a cat

A pet can reach Tonga, but not on an impulse. Every dog and cat needs an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Forests and Fisheries, and an animal that arrives without the right papers can be quarantined, returned or destroyed at the importer's expense.

The facts to read before you book

A dog needs effective vaccination against distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus between one and three months before shipment, an examination within 24 hours, and treatment against tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and external parasites within three days. A cat needs its own core vaccines. The permit also asks for an international health certificate signed by an official veterinarian.

The rabies vaccination is listed as given between 21 days and 12 months before entry. An ISO microchip is recommended but not required, and all papers carry its number. The animal enters at Fua'amotu and is inspected on arrival; the Veterinary Office is told at least 24 hours ahead.

  • The published permit conditions say the animal must travel directly to Tonga without transhipment or offloading, so whether a technical stop at Seattle with the animal on board is accepted is something we ask in writing;
  • The notices are written for air cargo, so whether the animal may travel in the cabin of a private aircraft is a second question for the authorities;
  • An animal that meets every requirement is usually released within a few hours; one that does not may be quarantined or sent back.

The way home would be British. A dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet between 24 and 120 hours before it lands in Britain, and an animal that does not meet the British rules can be held in quarantine for up to four months. Whether Tonga counts as a listed or a non-listed country, which decides whether a blood test and a three-month wait apply, is checked on gov.uk before any booking.

We confirm in writing the airports and the paperwork for the animal. Rules for other species are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the way to Tonga they are rare, and we say so rather than promise. A jet that has delivered a party to Tongatapu usually flies home empty, and a jet sent out empty to collect guests is the other source.

A client with an open date has a far better chance of a match, because the whole aircraft goes at about two-fifths of a fresh charter. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. The table gives an idea of the figures:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (London Luton) - Nuku'alofa Global 6000 13 seats £106,300
Nuku'alofa - UK (London Farnborough) Global 6000 13 seats £106,550
UK (London Biggin Hill) - Nuku'alofa Global 6000 13 seats £106,700
Nuku'alofa - UK (Edinburgh) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £108,250
UK (Manchester) - Nuku'alofa Gulfstream G550 16 seats £109,950
Nuku'alofa - UK (Glasgow) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £121,650

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. On the Luton sector in a Global 6000 an empty leg would cost about £106,300, which is a guide and not an offer, since the operator owns the date;

– A match on this corridor needs weeks of notice rather than days.

Helicopter charter and air tours

We found no helicopter operator with a published base in Tonga. A first commercial helicopter was reported to have left the kingdom after certification was declined, and we have not found a current operator.

A party that wants a helicopter, for a view of the reefs or a transfer between islands, gets a written answer from us on the operator, the aircraft and the landing site before we quote, and we say so if the answer is that none is available.

Tonga charters from the booking notes: two typical trips

Two typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

AUGUST · A COUPLE AND FRIENDS

Whale season in Vava'u

Luton - Nuku'alofa via Seattle, Global 6000, about 21 h 10 min plus the stop · 4 pax

The party left in the morning so that the aircraft landed well before the airport closes in the evening. Passports were checked for six months beyond the return, and ESTA approvals were in place for Seattle.

ONWARD · VAVA'U · THREE GUESTS

Up to the northern islands

Nuku'alofa - Vava'u, Citation CJ3+, about 55 min · 3 pax

The group flew on a mid-size jet after the long-range aircraft had been parked on Tongatapu. The day was a weekday, because the airports are not worked on Sundays, and the return fuel was taken before departure.

About 21 hours 10 minutes of flying from London in a Global 6000, plus about an hour on the ground at Seattle. The return takes about 17 hours 55 minutes of flying.

2How much does a private jet to Tonga cost?

From about £253,100 one way from London Luton in a Bombardier Global 6000 with one technical stop at Seattle Boeing Field. A Global 7500 from Luton comes to about £321,800. Air Passenger Duty is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in Tonga?

Fua'amotu International (TBU, NFTF) on Tongatapu, with a runway of about 2,700 metres and customs on site. It is the only airport we plan a long-range jet into. The second airport of entry, Vava'u, has a runway of about 1,700 metres.

4What are the entry rules for a British passenger on a private flight to Tonga?

No visa in advance for up to 30 days, as the visa is issued free on arrival. The passport must be valid for at least six months after arrival, and an onward ticket, funds and accommodation may be asked for. The aircraft needs permission for a non-scheduled flight, requested at least 24 hours ahead, and an ESTA or a visa is needed for the landing at Seattle.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Tonga?

It is possible only with an import permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Forests and Fisheries, with vaccinations and parasite treatments timed before departure. The rules ask for direct travel, so we check a stop at Seattle in writing. The way home needs the British rules.

6Can a private jet land in Tonga on a Sunday?

The main airport is listed as closed on Sundays except in distress, so we plan arrivals and departures for Monday to Saturday and confirm the hours in writing.

7When is the best time to fly to Tonga, and how early should I book?

July to October is cool, dry and the whale season, with the Heilala Festival around the start of July. December to April is warm and wet, and the cyclone season runs from November to April. Book as soon as the dates are known, since we plan a week for the permit alone.
