Private jet charter in Costa Rica
Costa Rica lies 4,878 nautical miles from a London airfield, which is inside the reach of a single long-range jet and a long way outside the comfortable reach of every mid-size one. Private Jets UK plans these trips from the beach or the meeting backwards to the departure slot. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Costa Rica that means a choice between two gateways about ninety nautical miles apart, a private terminal at San Jose airport with customs and immigration on site, and a realistic conversation about where the aircraft will park in the high season.

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Costa Rica depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.
You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:
- using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
- via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
- by landline or cell phone;
- via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).
Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, a Dassault Falcon 900LX to Juan Santamaria International Airport near San Jose with one technical stop in the Azores, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.
How long does it take to fly to Costa Rica?
The answer depends on how many stops the aircraft needs. A Falcon 900LX is published at about 4,750 nautical miles, the line from Farnborough to San Jose is 4,878, so the jet flies two legs through Santa Maria in the Azores, 1,400 nautical miles and then 3,709, together 231 more than the straight line. The long second leg leaves a margin of about 1,041 nautical miles against the published range. A Global 6000 or a Gulfstream flies the whole way. Costa Rica keeps UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving, so it is six hours behind Britain in winter and seven hours behind from late March to late October. The times below are westbound, against the usual wind, and count flying time only:
5,109 nautical miles from Farnborough in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Santa Mariaabout 12 h 30 min plus the stop
4,878 nautical miles from Farnborough, a long-range jet with no stopabout 10 h 50 min
4,878 nautical miles, a wide cabin and a comfortable margin on rangeabout 10 h 50 min
4,878 nautical miles, the fastest cabin on the listabout 10 h 35 min
4,901 nautical miles to the airport nearest the Pacific beachesabout 10 h 55 min
4,878 nautical miles with the jet stream behind the aircraftabout 9 h 10 min
Why the smaller jets need two stops, and what the day looks like
A Praetor 600 or a Challenger 605 is the usual answer to the Atlantic, and for Barbados or the nearer Caribbean islands it works with one stop in the Azores. Costa Rica is further on. The second leg alone from Santa Maria is 3,709 nautical miles, close to the published range of those types, and a westbound headwind can eat the difference. A super-midsize jet can reach the country with two technical stops, but that adds a second landing and a second hour on the ground, and we do not recommend it to a party that is paying to save time.
The way home is kinder. The jet stream blows from west to east, so a Global 6000 that needs about 10 h 50 min westbound is back in about 9 h 10 min. A Falcon 900LX that leaves Farnborough at eight in the morning is in the air for roughly twelve and a half hours and spends an hour at Santa Maria, so it lands at about half past nine in the evening by British clocks, which is half past three in the afternoon in San Jose in winter and half past two in summer. For a three-day business trip we advise the non-stop jet, and for a family holiday of ten days the Falcon with a stop is the sensible price.
The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

| Edinburgh - San Jose 4,784 nm / 8,860 km, non-stop |
Gulfstream G550 up to 16 |
from £135,500 |
Two things worth knowing about these figures
– From Farnborough a Falcon 900LX with the Azores stop starts at £126,400, a Global 6000 non-stop comes to £131,900, a Gulfstream G550 to £138,100 and a Gulfstream G650ER to £155,650. The gap between the Falcon and the Global is small for the time it buys: about 1 h 40 min less flying and no hour at Santa Maria. The same Falcon to Liberia costs £127,450, because the Pacific airport lies further to the west;
– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home. The jet has to recross the Atlantic whether it carries you or not, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip and not as a bargain. A stay booked as a return, or a flexible date that catches an empty leg, changes the arithmetic more than any negotiation can. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport, by distance band, and we show it as a separate line in the quotation.
Private jet flights within Costa Rica and to its neighbours
Inside the country the geography decides the aircraft. Only three airports can take a business jet and clear customs: San Jose, Liberia and, on the Caribbean side, Limon. The beach and jungle airstrips are short, many are grass, and the airlines and air taxis that serve them fly turboprops. A foreign-registered jet must first land at an airport of entry before using one, and a temporary import request can take seven to eight business days, so the practical answer is a local charter operator. The table prices each sector with the aircraft a jet broker would normally put on it:
| Route | Aircraft | Flight time | Price, one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Jose - La Fortuna (Arenal) 37 nm / 69 km |
Pilatus PC-12 NGX up to 9 |
about 40 min | from £3,100 |
| San Jose - Quepos (Manuel Antonio) 35 nm / 65 km |
Pilatus PC-12 NGX up to 9 |
about 40 min | from £3,100 |
| San Jose - Limon (Caribbean coast) 73 nm / 135 km |
Pilatus PC-12 NGX up to 9 |
about 45 min | from £3,100 |
| San Jose - Liberia (Guanacaste) 90 nm / 167 km |
Pilatus PC-12 NGX up to 9 |
about 50 min | from £3,100 |
| San Jose - Puerto Jimenez (Osa) 107 nm / 198 km |
Pilatus PC-12 NGX up to 9 |
about 55 min | from £3,100 |
| San Jose - Panama City (Tocumen) 303 nm / 561 km |
Citation XLS+ up to 9 |
about 1 h 10 min | from £6,800 |
| San Jose - Cancun (Mexico) 708 nm / 1,311 km |
Challenger 350 up to 9 |
about 2 h 05 min | from £15,400 |
| San Jose - Miami (Opa-locka) 1,021 nm / 1,891 km |
Challenger 350 up to 9 |
about 2 h 45 min | from £20,950 |
Two things worth knowing about the sectors
– The turboprop sectors are a different product. A Pilatus PC-12 can use the shorter fields, and the local operators run Caravans, King Airs and similar types for 15 to 45 minutes a leg. Some grass runways are limited to daylight visual flying, and mornings are the best window in the green season;
– Every sector to Panama, Mexico or Florida is an international arrival at the far end, with its own forms. Panama City is the nearest big airport, Cancun the usual stop for a Mexican beach week and Opa-locka the business airport for Miami, and British passengers going to Florida need an approved ESTA or a visa.

Private jets are ready to take off
Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Costa Rica:
Turboprops
Not an option for the crossing from Britain, but the right aircraft for the airstrips of the Pacific coast and the Osa peninsula. The Pilatus PC-12 and the King Air 350 take the shorter strips that a business jet cannot use.
Light jets
A light jet is a regional aircraft here: San Jose to Liberia, Panama City or Cancun with four to six people. From Britain no light jet attempts the crossing, so we do not offer it.
Super-midsize
The Praetor 600 is the smallest aircraft we would put on the crossing, with two technical stops, and it then works the region. The Citation XLS+ is the value choice for hops between Costa Rica and its neighbours.
Heavy jets
The class for a family with staff or a delegation of eight to twelve on the regional sectors. The Challenger 605 and Legacy 650 handle Florida and Mexico comfortably, though they need two stops from Britain.
Ultra-long range
The class that flies to Costa Rica in earnest. A Falcon 900LX is the cheapest with one stop in the Azores, and the Global and Gulfstream types cross the whole way in a wider cabin, with the Gulfstream G650ER the quickest.

Because the crossing is long and parking is short in the high season, we usually name two things in the quote: the aircraft that brings you from Britain, and what it does afterwards. It can wait, go home empty, or reposition to Florida, and each of those choices changes the price.

Business aviation airports in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has four airports of entry and only two of them matter to a private jet from Britain. San Jose and Liberia are 90 nautical miles apart, one in the central valley and one on the Pacific side, and the choice between them is the main decision of the whole trip. The table lists both, with the fields a crew looks at around them:
| Airport | Ground | How it operates |
|---|---|---|
| Juan Santamaria International SJO / MROC |
in Alajuela province, about 20 kilometres north-west of downtown San Jose | The main gateway and the airport most business aviation uses. One asphalt runway, 07/25, listed at about 3,011 metres by 45 metres, at an elevation of about 921 metres, which takes every aircraft on this page. The airport is run by Aeris under a concession. The AIP lists customs, immigration, fuelling and handling as available round the clock, and Jet A-1 and avgas are sold on site |
| GAT SJO General Aviation Terminal, operated by Universal Aviation |
beside the domestic terminal, apart from the airline concourses | A private terminal reserved for international private operations, with customs, immigration and quarantine staff on site, lounges, meeting rooms and a rest room, and roofed access from the kerb and from the ramp. Aircraft park on the usual remote stands and a handler vehicle carries passengers across. It is booked through the ground handler, and the terminal charges a fee by aircraft weight, a fee per passenger and a coordination fee |
| Daniel Oduber Quiros International LIR / MRLB |
in Guanacaste, a little over ten kilometres from the town of Liberia | The gateway for the Pacific beaches. One asphalt runway, 07/25, of about 2,750 metres (9,012 feet) at an elevation of 82 metres. Airport hours are listed as 04:30 to 23:45 local time, with the tower open from 06:00 to 23:45, so it is not a round-the-clock field. Private jets park at the passenger terminal, where the Universal Aviation FBO has its office, and the parking is arranged with the airport administration |
| Tobias Bolanos International SYQ / MRPV |
in the Pavas district, inside the built-up area of San Jose | The country's general aviation field, with air taxis, charters and flying schools and no scheduled airline service. It has a short runway, no instrument approach and visual flying only, and its weather office keeps daylight hours. It is closer to the city than SJO, but it is a field for turboprops and light aircraft rather than an intercontinental jet |
| Limon International LIO / MRLM |
on the Caribbean coast, the fourth airport of entry | Government-run and the only airport of entry on the Caribbean side. Business jets rarely use it, and Tortuguero trips usually start by turboprop from San Jose |
| Airstrips of the coast Quepos, Tamarindo, Nosara, Tambor, Puerto Jimenez, Drake Bay, La Fortuna |
scattered along the Pacific coast, the Osa peninsula and the north | Short fields for light aircraft and turboprops, some of them grass and limited to daylight visual flying. They have no customs, so a flight from abroad lands at San Jose or Liberia first |
| Santa Maria LPAZ |
3,709 nautical miles to the east-north-east, in the Azores | The usual technical stop on the way out. Its runway is 3,048 metres long and it has handled transatlantic traffic for decades. We name it in the quote, and the passengers normally stay aboard while the aircraft is refuelled |
Four points settle most arrivals before a quote goes out:
Parking: the limit in the high season
Every aircraft needs prior permission for parking from the airport authority, at the airports of entry and at the domestic strips. From late November to early April San Jose often has parking problems, a NOTAM can restrict overnight general aviation parking, and Liberia has the same trouble in the peak season. No hangar space is available for visiting aircraft at any airport of entry, so a crew may reposition elsewhere in Costa Rica or outside the country while the party stays.
Hours: Liberia closes at night
San Jose is listed as a round-the-clock airport and Liberia is not. The departure time from Britain is worked out backwards from the Liberia hours. The FBO's own standard hours at Liberia are 07:00 to 18:00, with 06:00 to 07:00 and 17:01 to 23:59 on request.
Fuel: avoid the early afternoon
Fuel uplifts are usually quick, but in the high season they can take several hours, especially between 13:00 and 16:00 local time. We ask the handler to schedule the fuel outside that window.
Paperwork: the flight plan is filed in person
Flight plans are filed at the ERO office at the international airports, in hard copy, signed by the captain or a dispatcher, about four hours before departure. RVSM and TCAS II are mandatory. Landing and overflight permits are not required for a private or charter flight, and controllers speak English.
The handler matters more than the FBO
Universal Aviation has offices at San Jose and Liberia, runs the General Aviation Terminal at San Jose and supervises operations at other airports. Directories also list Aerojet de Costa Rica, Aerologistica ST, ARSOT Flight Support and GA Flight Support at San Jose. The handler is named in the quotation. All times here are Costa Rica local time, UTC-6.
Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry
A private flight from London arrives as an international flight, and everyone aboard clears customs and immigration at the airport of entry on the day.
the passport must expire at least one day after the date you plan to leave Costa Rica; British citizens can visit without a visa under a tourist waiver for up to 180 days, with the exact period at the discretion of the immigration officerevery passenger, children included
a vaccination certificate is needed only when arriving from a country with a risk of transmission; a technical stop in the Azores does not trigger it, and tech stops are exempt in any case if nobody embarks or disembarkscheck the routing
required for every passenger and crew member; if the passport details reach the handler in advance, the cards are filled in before landingsend details early
cash, travellers cheques or goods worth US$10,000 or more are declared on arrival, and the certified declaration is kept to show when leaving, otherwise the money could be seizeddeclare when in doubt
fresh and unpackaged food is generally prohibited, each passenger may import up to five litres of alcohol, and firearms need a lengthy process with several authoritiesask the handler
a tax of US$29 is charged on leaving by air and is usually included in a ticket; on a private flight the handler arranges it in advance, and otherwise it is paid at a bank in the airport, which can take 30 to 45 minutes when the airport is busysettled in advance
How clearance works at the terminal
At San Jose the party uses the General Aviation Terminal, where customs, immigration and quarantine staff are on site and clearance typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. At the other airports of entry the handler escorts passengers to a separate customs, immigration and agriculture line in the main terminal; at Liberia the handler quotes 20 to 30 minutes for passengers and crew. The crew clear inbound after shutdown and again about two hours before departure. There are no customs fees, and a visa cannot be bought on arrival.
Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do. Goods bought in Costa Rica are declared on arrival in Britain like any other import from outside the country.

Which airport for which part of Costa Rica
As a rule the northern Pacific beaches belong to Liberia, and everything south and east belongs to San Jose. These are the usual pairings:
the Papagayo Gulf resorts, among them the Four Seasons, Hilton and Occidental, are about half an hour from the Liberia airport; Tamarindo, Playa Conchal and the Hacienda Pinilla area take 45 minutes to an hourLiberia (LIR)
Nosara, Samara, Punta Islita, Flamingo and Tambor, the last for Santa Teresa, Mal Pais and Montezuma, are 15 to 45 minutes by turboprop from LiberiaLiberia, then a hop
the capital, about 20 kilometres from the airport, and the base for meetings and for the day trips that start by roadSan Jose (SJO)
the central Pacific coast; Quepos is the airstrip for Manuel Antonio, and Dominical and Uvita are reached from it by roadSan Jose, then Quepos
Drake Bay for Corcovado and Isla del Cano, Puerto Jimenez, Golfito and Palmar Sur, and La Fortuna for Arenal, each 20 to 60 minutes from San Jose by turbopropSan Jose, then a hop
Arrive at one, leave from the other
A party that spends a week on the Pacific beaches and then a few days in the highlands should land at Liberia and fly home from San Jose, or the reverse, with the two airports only 90 nautical miles apart. The aircraft repositions empty, which the quotation shows as a line of its own, and a night of hotel and road transfer is saved. Cabotage is not an issue between airports of entry, so the operator may carry whom it likes on that sector.
Costa Rica: what our clients go for
Nature comes first, and it is meant literally. The country has a Caribbean coast to the east and a Pacific coast to the west, a spine of volcanoes between them and a highest point, Cerro Chirripo, of 3,819 metres. Corcovado National Park on the Osa peninsula is the only park where all four of the country's monkey species live.
Beach resorts come second. The Papagayo Gulf near Liberia holds a cluster of large hotels, and the coast to the south of it has surf towns. They fill with US-registered private aircraft in the winter, and a British party arriving in the same weeks learns that parking is part of the booking.
Business is the third reason, and a smaller one: the economy rests on medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, software, financial outsourcing and ecotourism.
The country has about five million people, Spanish is the official language and the currency is the colon. There has been no standing army since the 1940s, which Costa Ricans mention with some pride, and controllers and FBO staff work in English.
The year in Costa Rica: a dry winter peak and a green season
The year divides by rainfall rather than by temperature, and the calendar of visitors follows the rain:
the dry season and the busiest time for private flying; the high season for aviation runs from late November to early April, with March and April the hottest months and December and January the coolestpeak
the rains begin and the country turns green; the annexation of Guanacaste is celebrated in July and the Virgin of the Sea festival in Puntarenas keeps local events goingshoulder
the wettest stretch; heavy rain can close airports, particularly in September, and fog is possible at night and in the morningweather risk
the rains ease, the oxcart parade runs in San Jose in the last week and the aviation high season beginsbuilding up
Weather is a planning problem, not an exception
Heavy rain and fog can close an airport, and mornings are the best window for flying in the green season. With San Jose and Liberia only 90 nautical miles apart, each is the natural alternate for the other, and we agree the alternate with the crew before departure. In the wet months we keep the return date flexible and, for a nervous client, quote a Global 6000 at £131,900 one way instead of the Falcon, because it flies the whole way and has range in hand. The figures on this page describe an ordinary week.
The Costa Rican calendar: fiestas, festivals and oxcarts
The Costa Rican year runs on town fiestas, national holidays and a handful of festivals:
What a holiday does to a flight plan
Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa fill the hotels of the Pacific coast and the ramp at Liberia together, and in the peak season the airport has logged more than twenty private aircraft movements a day, many of them US-registered. Parking, fuel and a hotel car for such a week are requested with the quote.

Flying to Costa Rica with a dog or a cat
A dog or cat travels in the cabin, and on the Costa Rican side the rules are lighter than the paperwork suggests. The harder part is the way home, because Britain treats Costa Rica more strictly than it treats the countries of the EU, and that is where the timeline is set.
The one fact to read before you book
A pet that arrives with its owner in the cabin needs only a health certificate at the border inspection post, while an unaccompanied animal needs an import permit. The veterinary examination is made within two weeks before departure, and internal and external parasite treatments are given within 15 days before export and entered on the certificate with the date, brand, lot number and active ingredient. A rabies vaccination is required for dogs and cats older than three months and must be valid on the day of arrival. SENASA, the veterinary service, sets no waiting period after the vaccination and its published requirements contain no quarantine.
The handler's guide adds that dogs and cats need proof of where the animal was acquired, and warns that an animal without the right papers can face severe consequences at the border. The paperwork is settled before the aircraft is booked and not on the ramp.
- A microchip. Costa Rica does not require one, but Britain does for the return, so every animal flying with us is chipped before any other step;
- A rabies vaccination, given after the microchip and no earlier than the age of 12 weeks, with the vaccine make, batch and date on the certificate;
- A veterinary health certificate issued by a licensed vet within two weeks before departure, with the parasite treatments recorded. The form and any official endorsement that the Costa Rican authorities expect are confirmed with the handler for your animal before travel;
- A word with the operator. We confirm in writing the airport of entry, the inspection on arrival and what happens to the animal while the party clears customs.
The way home is where the planning starts. Costa Rica does not appear among the countries that Britain lists for lighter pet rules, so we treat it as a non-listed country. An animal then needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, and a wait of three months from the date of that sample. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that does not meet the rules can be refused or held in quarantine for up to four months.
In practice the blood test is done in Britain months before the trip, and we confirm with the Animal and Plant Health Agency, before the booking is accepted, how the British paperwork carries the animal home after a short stay. If it does not, a dog cannot make a short trip, and we say so at the quote stage.
Rules for other species, and for countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs
An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Costa Rica produces them in both directions, because a stay is mostly one-way work for the aircraft: it brings a party across the water and has to find its next client somewhere else.
Where Costa Rican empty legs come from
– Florida and the Americas. Opa-locka lies 1,021 nautical miles to the north-north-east, so a jet that has dropped a party at San Jose or Liberia may fly back to Florida empty, or arrive empty to collect a group;
– The winter peak and the holiday weeks. Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa send full cabins out in one direction and empty ones back a day or two later, and the leg is offered when the booking is firm;
– The end of a long stay. A jet that brought guests out on a Thursday may fly home empty on the Monday, and a client with an open date can have it at a fraction of the price.
A client who can give a window of a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Costa Rican empty legs follows:
| Route | Aircraft | Capacity | Whole aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costa Rica - Cancun | Challenger 350 | 9 seats | £6,450 |
| Costa Rica - Miami (Opa-locka) | Challenger 350 | 9 seats | £8,800 |

| Costa Rica - UK (Manchester) | Falcon 900LX | 12 seats | £53,300 |
| UK (Belfast) - Costa Rica | Global 6000 | 13 seats | £53,350 |
| UK (London Luton) - Costa Rica | Falcon 900LX | 12 seats | £53,400 |
| Costa Rica - UK (Edinburgh) | Global 6000 | 13 seats | £54,350 |
| Costa Rica - UK (London Gatwick) | Gulfstream G550 | 16 seats | £58,250 |
How to read those figures
– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Global 6000 leg of £54,350 with eight aboard works out at about £6,790 a head, and the whole leg costs about two-fifths of a fresh one-way charter;
– Legs to and from Central America are less frequent than those on a busy European corridor and cluster around the holiday weeks, so an open date helps more than anything.

Helicopter charter and air tours
Helijet Costa Rica lists private charters, transfers and scenic flights from a heliport a few minutes from the Liberia airport, covering Guanacaste and the Nicoya peninsula and further afield on request.
For the central valley a helicopter is a real alternative to a turboprop only where the airstrip is far from the hotel. San Jose to Quepos is 35 nautical miles and San Jose to the Arenal area 37, which a helicopter covers in about 25 minutes each way, against 40 minutes by PC-12 including the taxi and the climb.
If a client asks for a private helicopter
A transfer from the airport to a hotel, a lodge or a yacht depends on an operator being free on the date and on a landing site that the civil aviation authority accepts. We establish both before we put it in a quotation, and where neither can be confirmed we propose a car or a turboprop and a short drive.

Costa Rican charters from the booking notes: six typical trips
Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.
CHRISTMAS · A FAMILY
Five people and a villa on the Papagayo coast
Farnborough - Liberia, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 35 min plus the stop · 5 pax
The outbound flight was a one-way charter and the return a fortnight later was booked as a separate one-way once the dates were firm. Parking at Liberia is tight in the holiday weeks, so the stand and the hotel car were agreed with the handler before the quote was accepted.
BOARD TRIP · MEDICAL DEVICES
Three days of meetings around San Jose
Biggin Hill - San Jose, Global 6000, about 10 h 55 min · 6 pax
The party left on the Sunday and the aircraft was moved to another airport for the stay, since parking is limited. The long-range jet was chosen over a cheaper one with a stop because the first meeting was at nine on the Monday morning, local time.
HONEYMOON · TWO AIRPORTS
Ten nights with a hop to the central Pacific coast
Farnborough - San Jose, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 30 min plus the stop · 2 pax
The couple landed at San Jose, took a King Air to the Quepos strip for the beach and flew home from Liberia, with the jet repositioning empty between the two. The quote carried both crossings and the empty sector as separate lines.
WITH THE DOG · A BLOOD TEST FIRST
A couple and a spaniel for two weeks
Farnborough - Liberia, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h 35 min plus the stop · 2 pax + dog
The blood test was taken in Britain months before the date, the Costa Rican certificate was issued inside the two-week window, and the tapeworm treatment for the way home was booked with a local vet for the day before landing.
ONWARD · MIAMI
A week in the highlands, then Florida
San Jose - Opa-locka, Challenger 350, about 2 h 45 min · 4 pax
A London party that had flown out in a long-range jet sent it home empty and used a smaller jet for the hop to Florida. The operator filed the advance passenger data for the American arrival, and the party held ESTA approvals or visas before leaving Britain.
EMPTY LEG · AFTER EASTER
A flexible return to Edinburgh
Costa Rica - Edinburgh, Global 6000 empty leg, about 9 h · 3 pax
The client gave us a window of four days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £54,350, well under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.
Frequently asked questions about flying to Costa Rica
1How long does it take to fly to Costa Rica by private jet?
About 10 hours 50 minutes non-stop from a London airfield in a Global 6000, and about 12 hours 30 minutes of flying plus an hour on the ground in the Azores in a Falcon 900LX. The way home is shorter with the jet stream behind the aircraft. Costa Rica is six hours behind Britain in winter and seven hours behind in summer.
2How much does a private jet to Costa Rica cost?
From about £126,400 one way from Farnborough to San Jose in a Falcon 900LX with one technical stop in the Azores. A Global 6000 non-stop is about £131,900, a Gulfstream G550 about £138,100 and a Gulfstream G650ER about £155,650. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.
3Which airport do private jets use in Costa Rica?
Juan Santamaria International (SJO, MROC) near San Jose has a General Aviation Terminal with customs and immigration on site, and Daniel Oduber Quiros International (LIR, MRLB) in Liberia serves the Pacific beaches. Parking is limited in the high season, and Liberia is listed as closed at night.
4What are the passport and customs rules for a private flight from Britain to Costa Rica?
The passport must expire at least one day after you plan to leave, and British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 180 days, at the discretion of the immigration officer. Cash or goods worth US$10,000 or more are declared, fresh food is generally prohibited, and a departure tax of US$29 is arranged by the handler.
5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Costa Rica?
Yes. Costa Rica asks for a veterinary health certificate issued within two weeks before departure and a valid rabies vaccination, and its published requirements contain no quarantine. The return is the harder part: Britain treats Costa Rica as a non-listed country, which means a blood test, a three-month wait and a tapeworm treatment for dogs 24 to 120 hours before landing.
6When is the best time to fly to Costa Rica, and how early should I book?
December to April is the dry season and the busiest time, with the high season for aviation running from late November to early April, so book early for Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa, when parking is limited. August to October is the wettest period, and heavy rain can close airports in September.
