Private jet charter to Les Arcs

London to Les Arcs is an hour and thirty-five minutes in a light jet, with the whole aircraft priced from 8,200 GBP one way. The arrival is Chambery, and what governs a booking here is not the runway but the rate at which the airport can take you: through the ski season it accepts five arrivals an hour, holds no hangarage at all, and treats overnight parking between Friday and Sunday as a case-by-case decision. A Saturday in February is therefore won or lost weeks ahead, and when the slot cannot be had the airport moves you to Grenoble or Lyon itself. From the apron it is about two hours up the Tarentaise, and the last stage is a funicular rather than a road. Our customers have access to 6500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. For 15 years of successful work, we have established partnerships with the world’s largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you the most favorable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Aircraft suited to this run tend to sit at Geneva, Lyon, Nice and the London fields, which keeps the positioning leg short in both directions. Our consultants secure the slot and the parking before quoting a price, because at Chambery in winter the two questions are the same question.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Les Arcs depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ2+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Les Arcs?

Around an hour and a half from the London fields, and a little over two from Scotland. These are block figures with taxi and the valley approach counted in rather than airborne minutes. Every route below is measured to Chambery itself, LFLB.

Route Aircraft Flying time Routing
London Biggin Hill (EGKB) - Les Arcs (LFLB)
413 nm / 765 km
Cessna Citation CJ2+ about 1 h 35 min Nonstop
London Luton (EGGW) - Les Arcs (LFLB)
448 nm / 830 km
Cessna Citation XLS+ about 1 h 40 min Nonstop
Birmingham (EGBB) - Les Arcs (LFLB)
507 nm / 939 km
Cessna Citation XLS+ about 1 h 45 min Nonstop
Edinburgh (EGPH) - Les Arcs (LFLB)
710 nm / 1,315 km
Embraer Legacy 600 about 2 h 15 min Nonstop
Glasgow (EGPF) - Les Arcs (LFLB)
727 nm / 1,346 km
Embraer Legacy 600 about 2 h 20 min Nonstop

The approach explains the slot ceiling. Chambery lies in a north to south valley beside the largest natural lake in France, with ground rising to six thousand feet close by. Terrain to the south means every published instrument arrival comes in from the north, down the lake, and a single stream of that kind cannot be fed faster than the published rate.

Two things that move the price on this route

The first is the calendar, and it moves the price more sharply here than anywhere else we quote in the Alps. Five arrivals an hour is a hard ceiling, and in the Christmas fortnight and February half term that capacity is spoken for months ahead. What you pay for on a peak Saturday is access rather than flying, and a booking made in September costs materially less than the identical trip arranged in December.

The second is the absence of hangarage and the limit on weekend parking. An aircraft that cannot stay must reposition to Lyon or Geneva and come back for you, which puts two empty sectors inside the quote. Where the timing works, a repositioning flight already heading into the Alps appears on our empty legs list at a fraction of the charter rate.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jet flights to Les Arcs from Europe

Chambery also works as a short hop from the European hubs, and a good share of the Paradiski traffic arrives from the continent rather than from Britain.

Two things worth knowing about these sectors

– Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble are missing from the table deliberately. All three sit within forty nautical miles of Chambery and under an hour away by road, so a charter between them earns nothing at all and we quote the car;

– The slot ceiling applies to every arrival regardless of where it started, so a Saturday inbound from Nice competes for the same five places an hour as one from London. Continental clients are often surprised by that, and it is the reason we ask for firm dates from them as early as from British ones.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

Hourly rates make the effect of cabin size easy to see. The list runs from the least expensive upwards, and at Chambery the runway imposes no ceiling worth mentioning on any of it: two thousand metres takes everything a client is likely to charter for a week in the mountains.

Turboprop (Pilatus PC-12 NGX)from 1,750 GBP/h
Light jet (Citation M2, Citation CJ2+)2,300 - 2,900 GBP/h

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6500 business jets of different configurations and production years, and the list is constantly updated. The five groups below are the ones that matter for a week in Paradiski.

Turboprops

Rarely the obvious choice over four hundred miles, but a PC-12 takes skis without argument and occupies a stand for less time than a jet. Worth quoting when the party is four and the date is difficult.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 6 seatsfrom 1,750 GBP/h
Beechcraft King Air 350i · 7 seatsfrom 1,950 GBP/h

Light jets

The value answer from the south of England, where an hour and a half of flying makes a larger cabin a comfort purchase rather than a necessity. Baggage becomes the limit before seats do once skis are aboard.

Cessna Citation M2 · 6 seatsfrom 2,300 GBP/h
Cessna Citation CJ2+ · 6 seatsfrom 2,600 GBP/h

Midsize

The most quoted band on this route. Nine seats, a stand-up cabin and hold volume for nine sets of skis, which is what a family of eight needs for a week rather than a weekend.

Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom 3,200 GBP/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom 3,400 GBP/h

online private jet directory

Super-midsize and heavy

The band that carries thirteen from Scotland or Belfast in one aircraft rather than two, which on a slot-limited airport matters twice over: one arrival consumed instead of two, and one stand rather than a pair.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom 4,800 GBP/h
Embraer Legacy 600 · 13 seatsfrom 5,500 GBP/h
Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom 6,400 GBP/h

Ultra-long range

These reach Chambery comfortably and are seldom the right answer for a ski week, because the apron is small and the parking rules bite hardest on a large footprint. Where the itinerary continues to the Gulf or across the Atlantic we will usually route the long sector out of Geneva instead.

Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom 8,500 GBP/h
Gulfstream G650 · 14 seatsfrom 9,400 GBP/h

This is only a small part of the fleet open to us. Up to a heavy cabin the choice here comes down to your party and your budget; above that it comes down to the performance figures for your particular day, which we settle first.

Business aviation airports in Les Arcs

Les Arcs has no airfield of its own, and the terrain gives it little prospect of one, since the resort begins where the valley ends. The panel below covers Chambery, which serves the Tarentaise better than anything else, and the note underneath explains the rule that shapes every winter booking here.

AirportChambery Savoie Mont Blanc (CMF / LFLB), beside Lac du Bourget
Distance to Les ArcsAbout 136 km by road, up the A43 and the Tarentaise
Transfer timeRoughly two hours to the resort villages, longer on a changeover Saturday
Runway18/36, 2,020 by 45 metres, with a grass strip alongside it
Elevation234 metres, or 768 feet, on the floor of a north to south valley
Instrument approachCategory one, and every published arrival comes in from the north
Winter hoursSeven days a week, from half past seven in the morning until nine at night
Winter slotsRequired, requested by your handling agent through the airport system
Arrival capacityA maximum of five arrivals in any hour
HangarageNone at all
Weekend parkingFriday to Sunday nights are limited and decided case by case
If no slot is availableThe airport transfers the request to Grenoble or Lyon itself
CustomsOfficers attend the business terminal through the season
Owner and operatorThe Savoie department, with the airport run by Vinci

Five an hour, and what that means for your Saturday

Chambery does not limit itself by choice. The airport sits in a narrow valley with high ground on three sides, and because terrain rises immediately south of the city every instrument arrival descends from the north along the lake. One approach path in one direction can only be fed so quickly, which is why the winter season runs on a published ceiling of five arrivals an hour, allocated through the airport's own system rather than first come first served on the day.

Two consequences follow. Unused capacity at neighbouring airports sharing the same airspace is released ten days out, so a waitlisted request is not a dead one. And if nothing can be found, Chambery moves the request to Grenoble or Lyon rather than declining it, which is orderly but adds an hour to the road.

business aviation

The other fields serving Les Arcs, and what each is genuinely for:

Field What it takes and when it suits
Geneva
GVA / LSGG, 37 nm
The deepest choice of aircraft in the Alps at short notice, no seasonal ceiling on arrivals and the obvious answer when Chambery is full. The trade is the road: around two and three quarter hours, and a border crossing on the way
Grenoble
GNB / LFLS, 29 nm
Closest by air and the airport Chambery hands its overflow to. A long runway with no arrival ceiling, and roughly two and a half hours by road up the Tarentaise
Lyon Saint-Exupery
LYS / LFLL, 34 nm
A full international airport running around the clock, taking any aircraft type at any hour and the answer for a late arrival after Chambery has closed. About two and a half hours to Bourg-Saint-Maurice
Courchevel altiport
CVF / LFLJ, over the ridge
Famous, spectacular and not for Les Arcs. It serves the Trois Vallees on the far side of the Tarentaise and takes only small aircraft flown by qualified crews
Bourg-Saint-Maurice altiport
at the foot of the funicular
The airfield closest to the resort by a wide margin, and a short strip suited to light aircraft and gliders rather than charter jets

Three practical points

– The slot and the aircraft are one decision, not two. We will not quote a peak winter Saturday until both are confirmed, because a price without a slot behind it is not a price;

– France is inside Schengen and Britain is not, so a flight from the UK crosses an external frontier. Customs officers attend the business terminal through the season and the formality is completed at the aircraft;

– Ask about the return at the same time as the outbound, because the aeroplane cannot hold a stand over a weekend without permission.

Business aviation passengers are handled away from the main concourse, and half an hour before departure is ample. What our consultants settle against your date is the agent, the stand and, on an outbound flight, the customs arrangement.

From the apron to the Tarentaise

The road runs up the Tarentaise valley on motorway and dual carriageway as far as Bourg-Saint-Maurice, and only the last stretch is mountain driving. The figures below are clear-road times from Chambery.

Albertville
where the motorway ends and the valley road begins
about 45 minutes
Moutiers
the junction for the Trois Vallees, and still on the valley floor
about 1 h 15 min
Bourg-Saint-Maurice
the town below the resort, and the foot of the funicular
about 1 h 45 min
Arc 1600
seven minutes above Bourg-Saint-Maurice by funicular
about 1 h 55 min
Arc 1800
the largest of the villages, reached by road
about 2 h 05 min
Peisey-Vallandry
the Paradiski link and the Vanoise Express station
about 2 h 05 min
Arc 1950 and Arc 2000
the highest pair, at the top of the road
about 2 h 15 min
Tignes and Val d'Isere
on beyond Bourg-Saint-Maurice, up the Isere
about 2 h 20 min

The funicular, and why it changes the last half hour

Les Arcs is unusual in that the final stage need not be driven at all. A funicular railway climbs from beside the station at Bourg-Saint-Maurice to Arc 1600 in seven minutes, running every twenty minutes from early morning until half past nine at night, and free shuttles connect the villages above. On a Saturday in February, when the mountain road is carrying every changeover in the resort at once, that is the difference between arriving in time to ski and arriving in time for dinner.

Which of the five levels you are staying at decides how the transfer is arranged. Arc 1600 sits at the top of the funicular; the others are reached by road, which is why the table gives them separate times. Tell us the village rather than the resort and the car meets you in the right place.

Helicopter transfers into the Tarentaise

A rotary leg into the Tarentaise is a well established piece of business, with operators based along the valley and pads at most of the larger resorts. The times below are flying minutes and are worth reading against the road figures above.

Albertvilleabout 12 minutes
Moutiersabout 18 minutes
Courchevel altiportabout 22 minutes
Bourg-Saint-Mauriceabout 25 minutes
Arc 2000about 27 minutes
Tignesabout 30 minutes
Val d'Isereabout 32 minutes
Chamonixabout 35 minutes

When the rotary leg earns its cost

On an ordinary weekday it saves about an hour and a half for a considerable sum, which many clients decline and we do not press. Its case is the changeover Saturday and the day after heavy snow, when the Tarentaise road carries the traffic of a dozen resorts and the climb above Bourg-Saint-Maurice can be under chain control.

Two constraints govern it. Mountain weather closes rotary options well before it closes the valley road, so we hold the car as the fallback. And landing at anything other than an established resort pad is agreed with the site in advance.

Flying to Les Arcs with a dog or a cat

France asks very little of a visiting dog and Britain asks rather more of it coming home, which is the reverse of what most owners expect. What defeats people is leaving the paperwork until the aircraft is booked, because one document has a shelf life measured in days.

The ten day certificate, and the ski season problem

An Animal Health Certificate is what a British resident now travels on, and an official veterinarian must sign it inside the ten days before you leave. It cannot be obtained in November for a February holiday and it covers one journey only. The awkwardness is that the practices approved to issue these certificates are busiest in precisely the weeks when the Alps are busiest. Book the veterinary appointment when you book the chalet, not when you book the aeroplane.

What France asks for on the way in:

  • A microchip readable to the international standard, in place before the rabies injection rather than after it. Done the other way round, the injection does not count and you begin again;
  • Rabies cover with three clear weeks behind it, from twelve weeks of age upwards. A booster given while the previous course still stands works from the day it is administered;
  • The certificate itself, signed by an official veterinarian within ten days of departure and issued in English alongside French;
  • Nothing further on arrival. France requires no worming or tick treatment at the border, which surprises owners who have taken the same animal to Ireland or Norway;
  • Coming home, a praziquantel dose from a vet between one and five days before you land in Britain, with the hour recorded. Dogs only, and it is arranged in the resort rather than before you set out.

Cats and ferrets skip the worming stage in both directions and need only the chip, the injection and the certificate. Five animals is the limit for any one party unless you are travelling to a recognised competition and can prove it, which in practice affects nobody going skiing.

Veterinary surgery at the airportNone on the field
Practices near the resortSeveral in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, ten minutes below Arc 1600
What the homeward treatment needsA vet visit in France, timed against your landing in Britain
What we arrangeThe appointment in the valley, confirmed to you in writing before you fly
Restrictions on the animalNone on a charter, and it travels in the cabin beside you

An hour and a half with no hold, no crate and nobody separating you from your animal is a gentler journey than the drive to a British airport would be, and on this route the flying is the easy part. The wider rules sit on our travel with pets page. The item that governs your dates is the certificate, and in the ski season it governs them more tightly than the aircraft does.

The Paradiski season

Les Arcs runs on a winter calendar with a genuine summer behind it, and the airport follows the first of those almost exclusively.

When the valley is busy, and what it means for a booking

– The fortnight spanning Christmas and New Year, when the five arrivals an hour are taken months ahead. This is when a late enquiry is most likely to end at Grenoble or Lyon;

– February half term, the heaviest British fortnight of the Alpine year and the point at which a Friday or Sunday arrival costs noticeably less than a Saturday one;

– Any Saturday from January to March, when changeover day fills the slot table and the Tarentaise road at once, and the funicular starts to look like sensible money;

– July and August, when Bourg-Saint-Maurice fills with cyclists and the airport is quiet enough that a slot is a formality.

Types of flights

Our company provides all types of business flights. Due to a wide variety of jets, we can arrange:

  1. private flights;
  2. corporate flights;
  3. business class flights;
  4. concert tours;
  5. medical flights (with doctors and special equipment on board);
  6. tourist flights for large and small groups;
  7. sports charters for teams and coaching staff;
  8. combined flights (partly by business jet, and partly by helicopter);
  9. exclusive flights on luxury jets for businessmen, celebrities, and politicians;
  10. cargo flights, etc.

A flexible approach and a wide experience allow us to solve problems of any complexity. In 90% of cases, we manage to arrange urgent flights (on the day of application). That holds outside the ski season, when Chambery is quiet and a slot is a formality. Between December and April it does not: the arrival table fills months ahead and a winter Saturday cannot be conjured at short notice. A dog aboard adds its own ten day certificate window on top.

Empty Legs

Another way to fly cheaper is to use Empty Legs. This service allows you to save on regular charter rates. As you know, part of the flights is one-way. The Alps produce a great many of them in winter, because an aircraft that cannot hold a stand over the weekend leaves Chambery empty and returns empty to collect its passengers again. Such flight is called “Empty Legs”. Empty leg flights can be as cheap as 50-75% off the standard charter price. This option is profitable for both the passengers and the charter companies. The clients can enjoy the services of business aviation at a very good price, while the airlines recoup part of the cost of fuel and jet maintenance.

It is almost impossible to find Empty Leg flights, as the information about them is stored in special databases available only to the aviation brokers and specialized companies. You should know that Empty Leg flights offer the same service as private jet charters. The passengers enjoy a 100% private jet flying experience. Services and flight conditions are discussed individually. We should note that our company cooperates with the world’s largest home bases, so we can offer our clients a wide choice of return flights. Just send a request to our manager who will help you find the best flight options. Please note that Empty Leg flights are sold out very quickly. To avoid such a problem, you can leave us a deposit, and we will contact you as soon as the flight of your choice becomes available. For additional information, check with the operators.

Jet Sharing

Today, Jet Sharing is just as popular as private jet charter. This service involves the joint rental of a business jet with other passengers (that is, the cost of the flight is divided equally between all passengers of a specific flight). This type of flight has become especially popular in the last few years. Many people like Jet Sharing because it allows you to enjoy all benefits of business aviation at favorable prices.

We should note that the number of passengers per Jet Sharing flight varies from 3 to 8, while the cost of the flight ranges from 1200 to 6000 pounds (depending on the destination). This way, you can get a comfortable flight on a business jet (and maybe even meet new business partners) at a very good price. You can check out the schedule of Jet Sharing flights by filling in the online form or contacting our operators by phone or WhatsApp.

Main advantages of this service:

  • All privileges of business aviation, including the use of the business aviation terminal and the check-in 30 minutes before the flight, are retained;
  • You can also use the services of the VIP Lounge (included in the price of the flight);
  • No baggage restrictions;
  • Affordable price: jet sharing is much cheaper than private jet charter;
  • Pets can be carried directly in the aircraft cabin.

Our consultants will be happy to help you choose the best flight.

Helicopter charter

Private Jets UK clients have access to a rotary fleet across the Savoie. Machines are normally boarded on the apron alongside the jet at the business terminal. Where a particular type is based up the valley we bring it down to meet you.

The types that suit this region, and the job each one does:

  • Airbus H125, four passengers with luggage, the least costly way off the ramp and enough for a hop up to Bourg-Saint-Maurice or across to a neighbouring valley;
  • Airbus H130, up to six seats, a quieter cabin on the same single-engine platform and the usual answer for a family;
  • Airbus H135, six seats, a light twin that keeps its performance in poorer conditions and the type we choose for a movement late in the day;
  • Agusta AW109, six seats, faster again and the choice for a day taking in two or three resorts across the Tarentaise.

Availability turns week by week, and the August weekends commit furthest ahead. Please contact our aviation consultants for the current position on a particular model and date.

Les Arcs charters we have flown: six trips from the booking notes

These come from our own files, with surnames reduced to initials and details altered so that no client is identifiable. Each turned on something particular to Chambery or to the Tarentaise rather than to charter in general.

SLOT · WAITLIST

The B. family: a Saturday that appeared ten days out

London Luton to Les Arcs, Citation XLS+, 1 h 40 min · 8 passengers

They came to us in January for the February half term, by which time the arrival table for that Saturday had been full since the autumn. Rather than move them to Grenoble we put the request on the waitlist, because unused capacity at the neighbouring airports is released ten days before the date. A slot came back at nine days, and the Grenoble quote had been priced in case it did not.

PARKING · TWO EMPTY SECTORS

A Yorkshire group: why the quote had four legs in it

Leeds Bradford to Les Arcs, Challenger 350, 1 h 55 min · 9 passengers

The client asked why our figure exceeded a rival's for the same aircraft on the same day. Chambery holds no hangarage and weekend parking is decided case by case, so on a Saturday to Saturday stay the aeroplane repositions to Lyon and returns. We set the four sectors out plainly. The rival quote had two.

VILLAGE · WRONG ONE

Mr and Mrs D. K.: booked for Les Arcs, staying at Arc 2000

London Biggin Hill to Les Arcs, Citation CJ2+, 1 h 35 min · 5 passengers

The transfer had been arranged to Bourg-Saint-Maurice on the assumption that the funicular would finish the job. It reaches Arc 1600 and no further, and they were staying at Arc 2000, twenty minutes further up by road with a week's luggage. We caught it two days out. Naming the village rather than the resort takes seconds.

SNOW · CHAIN CONTROL

A Scottish party: the climb was closed and the flight was not

Edinburgh to Les Arcs, Legacy 600, 2 h 15 min · 12 passengers

Heavy overnight snowfall with the road above Bourg-Saint-Maurice under chain control. Chambery was operating normally, which is usually the case: the valley floor keeps working while the mountain does not. They took the funicular to Arc 1600 and the resort shuttles from there, reaching the chalet while the cars were still queuing.

DOG · TEN DAY WINDOW

Ms F. L.: a certificate that could not be obtained early

London Farnborough to Les Arcs, Phenom 300E, 1 h 35 min · 6 passengers and a labrador

She had organised everything in October and assumed the veterinary paperwork could be done then too. It cannot, and by February every accredited practice near her was booked solid with people making the same discovery. We found an appointment forty miles away. The lesson is the order of operations rather than the difficulty.

GROUP · ONE ARRIVAL

A corporate week: thirteen people and a single slot

Glasgow to Les Arcs, Legacy 600, 2 h 20 min · 13 passengers

Quoted elsewhere as two midsize aircraft, which here would have consumed two of the five arrivals available that hour and asked for two stands on an apron with none to spare. One Legacy solved all three problems, and the saving against the pair ran to a little over three thousand pounds.

Les Arcs and Paradiski: destination overview

Les Arcs is five settlements rather than one, stacked up the mountainside above Bourg-Saint-Maurice from 1,600 metres to 2,000, with the town itself on the valley floor at 810. It was built from nothing to a deliberate architectural plan, which is why it looks unlike the older Savoyard resorts and why opinions about it divide. The skiing divides nobody: 200 kilometres of piste in the resort and 425 across Paradiski once the Vanoise Express carries you over to La Plagne.

Where to stay

Arc 1600 is the original village, quiet and wooded, and the only one the funicular reaches directly. Arc 1800 is the largest and liveliest, with most of the restaurants and the shortest walk to a lift. Arc 1950 is the newest and the most comfortable of the five. Arc 2000 sits highest and closest to the serious skiing off the Aiguille Rouge. Bourg-Saint-Maurice at the bottom is a working town rather than a resort, and suits anyone who would rather eat where the season does not set the prices.

What to do

The Aiguille Rouge at 3,226 metres is the reason serious skiers come, with a descent of over two thousand vertical metres to Villaroger that few resorts anywhere can match. The Vanoise Express, a double-decker cable car crossing the valley to La Plagne, is worth riding whether or not you ski the far side. Off the snow, Bourg-Saint-Maurice has whitewater on the Isere through the summer, and the road over the Cormet de Roselend is among the finest in the Alps once it clears in June.

When it is busy

Christmas, New Year and February half term are the three periods that fill first, and Saturdays through the winter are the pinch point for slots and roads together. March gives long days with reliable snow high up. July and August are quiet in the resort and busy on the passes, and September has the valley almost to itself.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Les Arcs

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Les Arcs?

About 1 hour 35 from Biggin Hill or Farnborough and 1 hour 40 from Luton, covering roughly 413 to 448 nautical miles to Chambery. Allow around 1 hour 45 from Birmingham or Bristol, close to 1 hour 55 from Manchester, and 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 20 from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Add about two hours by road to the resort villages.

2How much does a private jet to Les Arcs cost?

From about 8,200 GBP one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill, 9,700 GBP from Farnborough and 11,200 GBP from Luton on a midsize cabin. Birmingham runs around 12,000 GBP and Manchester 12,700 GBP, while Edinburgh is about 20,600 GBP and Glasgow 21,000 GBP on a thirteen-seat Legacy 600. Those are shoulder-season figures for the whole aircraft; the Christmas fortnight and February half term price well above them.

3Which airport do private jets use for Les Arcs?

Chambery Savoie Mont Blanc, CMF or LFLB, about 136 kilometres away and roughly two hours by road up the Tarentaise. It is the closest airport of any size to the resort. Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon all serve Les Arcs as well and all sit further away by road, though Geneva offers the widest choice of aircraft at short notice and Grenoble is where Chambery sends its overflow.

4Why is it so hard to get a winter slot at Chambery?

Because the airport can only accept five arrivals in any hour. It lies in a narrow valley with terrain rising immediately to the south, so every instrument approach has to descend from the north along the lake, and a single approach path cannot be fed faster than that. Slots are allocated through the airport's own system, there is no hangarage, and overnight parking from Friday to Sunday is decided case by case. Unused capacity nearby is released ten days ahead, so a waitlisted request is worth keeping alive.

5Do British passport holders need a visa for France?

No. A British passport allows visa-free travel for short stays of up to ninety days in any one hundred and eighty. France is inside Schengen and the United Kingdom is not, so the flight crosses an external frontier and the arrival is recorded electronically under the EU entry and exit system. Customs officers attend the business terminal at Chambery through the winter and the formality is completed at the aircraft.
