Costs and pricing

How much does it cost to charter a private jet in the UK?

Private jet charter prices in the UK start from approximately £3,700 for a light jet on a short European sector such as London to Paris. The total cost depends on several factors: the distance of the sector, the aircraft category, the number of passengers, the departure airport, the time of year, and any additional services requested.

Indicative one-way starting prices from London on a light jet:

  • London to Paris: from £3,700;
  • London to Amsterdam: from £3,800;
  • London to Geneva: from £5,400;
  • London to Nice / Cannes: from £6,400;
  • London to Ibiza: from £7,800;
  • London to Rome: from £7,400;
  • London to Athens: from £18,400;
  • London to Dubai: from £52,000;
  • London to New York: from £62,000;
  • London to Miami: from £88,000.

These are starting prices on the smallest practical aircraft for each route. Midsize and large cabin jets carry higher hourly rates but offer more cabin space and capacity. For a full breakdown of pricing by aircraft category, see our charter price guide.

What is the private jet cost per hour in the UK?

Hourly operating rates for private jets in the UK range from approximately £850 per hour for a turboprop to £10,300 or more per hour for a business liner. The hourly rate is only one component of the total charter cost - the quote you receive will also include positioning fees, landing fees, overnight crew costs where applicable, and Air Passenger Duty.

Approximate hourly rates by aircraft category:

  • Turboprop (King Air 350, PC-12): from £850 per hour;
  • Light jet (Phenom 300, Citation CJ3): from £1,700 to £2,500 per hour;
  • Midsize jet (Citation XLS+, Hawker 800XP): from £3,000 to £3,700 per hour;
  • Large midsize jet (Challenger 300): from £4,600 to £5,500 per hour;
  • Large cabin jet (Legacy 600): from £4,900 to £5,800 per hour;
  • Long-range jet (Global 5000, Gulfstream G550): from £5,800 to £8,800 per hour;
  • Business liner: from £10,300 per hour.

What is included in the private jet charter price?

Our quotes are fully itemised and all-inclusive. A typical charter price covers:

  • Aircraft hire fee based on the number of flight hours;
  • Fuel costs (approximately 30% of the total);
  • Crew salaries and expenses for the duration of the mission;
  • Air navigation and overflight fees;
  • Airport landing and handling charges at both departure and arrival airports;
  • Standard catering (water, soft drinks, snacks and light refreshments);
  • Positioning costs if the aircraft needs to travel to your departure airport.

Items typically quoted separately include: bespoke catering (specific menus, hot meals, champagne), ground transfers, de-icing during winter operations, and Air Passenger Duty. We will always show these clearly in your quote so there are no surprises.

What is Air Passenger Duty and does it apply to private jets?

Air Passenger Duty (APD) is a UK government tax that applies to commercial air transport departures from UK airports. As of April 2026, APD rates for private jets over 20 tonnes are £142 per passenger for short-haul flights (Band A - within 2,000 miles of London) and £1,141 per passenger for long-haul flights (Band B - beyond 2,000 miles). Lighter private jets may be subject to lower APD rates depending on their Maximum Takeoff Weight. We include the applicable APD in every quote based on the specific aircraft and route.

Is a private jet worth it compared to business class?

For groups of 4 or more passengers, private jet charter often competes directly with business class when total journey time and ground transport are factored in. The key advantages of private jet over business class are: departure from smaller, less congested airports (Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Luton) with check-in as little as 20 to 30 minutes before departure; the ability to fly directly to airports closer to your destination; complete privacy and control over the cabin environment; flexibility to change departure times; and the ability to travel with pets in the cabin.

For a solo business traveller on a standard London-European route with no time pressure, business class will generally be more cost-effective. For groups, time-critical trips, or routes where commercial connections are inconvenient, private charter typically offers a compelling case on a total-cost basis.

Booking and availability

How do I charter a private jet?

The process is straightforward. Submit a request on our website or call us directly with your route, dates, number of passengers and any specific requirements. Our aviation consultant will contact you within 5 minutes, clarify any additional details, and present aircraft options with fully itemised all-inclusive pricing within 15 to 40 minutes. Once you confirm your choice, we issue a contract setting out all the terms, price and schedule. Payment is made by bank transfer or invoice. After signing, you simply arrive at the departure airport at the agreed time - typically 20 to 30 minutes before departure.

How far in advance should I book a private jet?

For most European routes, 24 to 48 hours is sufficient for a standard booking. For urgent flights, we can arrange departure in 2 to 4 hours from initial request when aircraft are already positioned near your departure airport.

However, advance booking gives you access to the widest choice of aircraft and the best pricing. For peak periods, we recommend booking considerably earlier:

  • Monaco Grand Prix, Ibiza high season, Mykonos peak: 6 to 8 weeks ahead;
  • Christmas and New Year: 6 to 10 weeks ahead;
  • Alpine ski season (January to February): 3 to 6 weeks ahead;
  • Oktoberfest, major sporting events: 4 to 8 weeks ahead;
  • Long-haul flights requiring overflight permits (China, some Middle Eastern routes): 7 to 10 working days minimum for permit processing.

Can I book a private jet on the same day?

Yes, in many cases. If a suitable aircraft is already positioned near your departure airport, same-day departure is possible - sometimes within 2 to 4 hours of your initial request. Availability depends on what is positioned in the right location at the right time. We always check current positioning before quoting, so if a same-day option exists, we will find it. During peak periods or for unusual routes, same-day availability may be limited.

Can I charter a private jet from Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or other regional UK airports?

Yes. We arrange private jet charter from every UK airport, including Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Bristol, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Cardiff and all regional airports. Aircraft availability at regional airports can sometimes be more limited than at London airports, but for most European routes we can source suitable aircraft within a reasonable timeframe. Pricing from regional airports is typically within 10 to 20% of London prices on European routes, and within 5% on long-haul routes where the total sector distance dominates the cost.

Can I change my flight after booking?

Changes to departure times, passenger lists and other details can usually be accommodated up to the point of departure, subject to slot availability at the airports involved and crew duty hours. Significant changes - particularly to the route or departure date - may be subject to a rebooking fee. Our consultant will advise on the implications of any change at the time of the request. Changes that require a new aircraft or crew positioning will typically incur additional cost.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms vary by operator and are set out clearly in the contract before you sign. As a general guide, cancellation more than 7 days before departure typically results in a partial refund with an administration fee retained. Cancellation within 72 hours of departure usually results in little or no refund as the operator will have blocked the aircraft and crew. If a flight is cancelled due to circumstances within our or the operator's control - a technical issue, crew unavailability or operational failure - you are entitled to a full refund or an alternative flight at no additional cost. We recommend travel insurance for clients who may need to cancel at short notice for personal reasons.

At the airport

How long before departure do I need to arrive at the airport?

For most private jet departures, arriving 20 to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time is sufficient. This is one of the most significant time advantages of private aviation over commercial flights. At dedicated private jet terminals and FBOs, check-in is fast, security is minimal and there are no queues. For international flights, allow slightly more time - 30 to 45 minutes - to accommodate passport checks and any customs requirements. Your consultant will advise on the specific check-in time for your flight at the time of booking.

What is an FBO and where do private jets depart from?

FBO stands for Fixed Base Operator - a dedicated private aviation terminal that handles the ground services for private jet operations, including passenger check-in, baggage handling, fuel, aircraft handling and VIP lounge facilities. Private jets typically depart from FBOs rather than commercial terminals, which is why the private jet experience is so different from commercial flying. At Farnborough Airport, Biggin Hill, Oxford and similar dedicated business aviation airports, the entire facility is an FBO. At larger commercial airports like Heathrow or Manchester, private jets use a separate general aviation or business aviation terminal away from the commercial passenger areas.

Do I need to go through customs and immigration on a private jet?

Yes - private jet passengers are subject to the same customs and immigration requirements as commercial passengers when crossing international borders. The difference is the experience: at most private aviation terminals, border formalities take place in the terminal itself, with dedicated customs and immigration staff. The process is typically faster and more private than at commercial airports, with no queues or shared facilities. Your passport must be valid, and where visas are required for your destination, these must be obtained in advance. We advise on document requirements for every international booking.

How much luggage can I bring on a private jet?

Luggage allowance depends on the aircraft type and the number of passengers. As a general guide: light jets can typically accommodate one to two standard suitcases per passenger in addition to hand luggage; midsize jets offer more generous hold capacity and can handle larger volumes of luggage; and large cabin jets have separate pressurised hold space sufficient for extended stays with multiple passengers. For specific trips with significant luggage - ski equipment, golf bags, oversized items - tell us in advance and we will confirm the specific aircraft's hold capacity.

On board

What catering is provided on a private jet?

Standard catering on most private jet charters includes water, soft drinks, coffee, tea and light snacks. More extensive catering - specific menus, hot meals, champagne and wines, dietary-specific meals - can be arranged in advance at additional cost. On longer sectors, a full meal service can be provided on most midsize and larger aircraft. Catering is prepared by the FBO catering team before departure and loaded onto the aircraft. For specific dietary requirements or personal preferences, tell your consultant at the time of booking and we will coordinate with the handling agent accordingly.

Is Wi-Fi available on private jets?

Wi-Fi availability varies by aircraft. Many modern midsize, large cabin and long-range jets are equipped with satellite Wi-Fi, though connection speed and reliability vary depending on the aircraft's system and the route. Older or smaller aircraft may not have Wi-Fi. If connectivity is important for your flight, tell your consultant at the time of enquiry and we will filter options accordingly, or confirm the specific aircraft's Wi-Fi capability before booking.

Can I smoke on a private jet?

Most private jets are non-smoking. Some operators do permit smoking on specific aircraft - this is a condition set by the operator, not by us. If smoking is a requirement, advise your consultant at the time of booking and we will identify operators and aircraft where this is permitted. Note that smoking-permitted aircraft are a small minority of the available fleet, which may limit aircraft options on some routes.

Can I travel with my pet on a private jet?

Yes. Pets travel in the cabin with you on private jets - not in the hold - for the entire flight. This is one of the most significant advantages of private aviation for pet owners. For travel from the UK to EU countries, you will need:

  • An EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a UK government-authorised veterinarian;
  • A microchip (ISO 11784/11785 compliant);
  • A valid rabies vaccination, administered at least 21 days before travel;
  • For dogs: a tapeworm treatment administered 24 to 120 hours before arrival in the EU.

For destinations outside the EU - the UAE, USA, Asia and others - pet import requirements vary significantly. We advise on documentation and timing requirements as part of every pet-inclusive booking, and recommend beginning the documentation process at least 4 to 6 weeks before travel for European destinations.

Safety and legal

Is private jet charter safe?

Yes. Every flight arranged through Private Jets UK is operated by a licensed operator holding a current Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from EASA, the UK CAA or an equivalent national civil aviation authority. AOC-certified operators are subject to the same rigorous regulatory oversight as commercial airlines - mandatory maintenance programmes, crew training requirements, airworthiness standards and operational controls. We verify AOC status for every operator before confirming any booking. For a full explanation of the safety standards that apply to every flight we arrange, see our dedicated Safety page.

What is an Air Operator Certificate?

An Air Operator Certificate (AOC) is a government-issued licence that authorises an operator to conduct commercial air transport flights. It is the fundamental legal requirement for any company offering private jet charter - without an AOC, an operator cannot legally carry paying passengers. Obtaining an AOC typically takes over 2 years and involves a thorough audit of the operator's safety management, maintenance programmes, crew qualifications and operational procedures by the relevant aviation authority. AOC holders are subject to ongoing oversight and regular audits to maintain their certification. You can verify a UK operator's AOC status on the UK CAA website at caa.co.uk.

Why should I use a broker rather than booking directly with an operator?

A broker gives you access to the full market rather than a single operator's fleet. When you contact an operator directly, they can only offer you aircraft from their own fleet - which may not include the most suitable or cost-efficient option for your specific mission. A broker searches the entire available market and presents the options that best match your requirements on price, aircraft type and availability. As a broker, Private Jets UK has no commercial incentive to recommend a specific aircraft or operator - our sole obligation is to find the best option for you.

What documents do I need to travel on a private jet?

For international flights, a valid passport is always required. Visas must be obtained in advance where required for your destination - private jet passengers are not exempt from visa requirements. For domestic UK flights (for example, London to Edinburgh or Manchester to Belfast), a passport is not legally required but is always recommended. For flights into the European Union from the UK, no visa is required for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for UK citizens. Your consultant will advise on specific documentation requirements for your destination at the time of booking.

What are empty leg flights and how do they work?

An empty leg flight (also called a repositioning flight) occurs when a private jet needs to fly without passengers - typically returning to base after delivering clients to their destination, or repositioning ahead of a new booking. Because the operator is flying the aircraft regardless, these flights are made available at a significant discount, typically 50 to 75% below the standard charter price for the same aircraft and route. The constraint is that the departure time, route and date are fixed by the operator's schedule and cannot usually be changed. Empty legs suit clients with genuine flexibility in their schedule. See our Empty Legs page for current availability.
