Private jet charter in New Zealand

Few places lie further from Britain than New Zealand, and no business jet in production flies from London to Auckland without landing on the way. Private Jets UK builds every New Zealand charter around that stop, because the stop decides the aircraft, the crew, the price and the hour you arrive. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. For New Zealand that also means the permissions an overseas aircraft needs before it lands, the customs and biosecurity paperwork that goes with the arrival, and a plan for the domestic legs, because the cabin that crosses the world is seldom the one that flies you on from Auckland to Queenstown.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter to New Zealand depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Stansted, a Gulfstream G650ER to Auckland with one technical stop in Singapore and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to New Zealand?

New Zealand runs eleven to thirteen hours ahead of Britain depending on the season, so a flight that leaves London in the morning lands on the evening of the following day by the local clock. These are the journeys from a London airfield, gate to gate, including one fuel stop of about an hour:

London to Auckland
10,802 nautical miles planned, the main gateway and the busiest airport in the country, through Singapore
about 22 h 55 min
London to Wellington
10,865 nautical miles planned, the capital, on the southern tip of the North Island, also through Singapore
about 23 h 05 min
London to Christchurch
10,799 nautical miles planned, the gateway to the South Island, open round the clock
about 22 h 55 min
London to Dunedin
10,745 nautical miles planned, the south-east of the South Island, with customs in its own terminal
about 22 h 50 min
London to Queenstown
10,666 nautical miles planned, the lakes and the ski fields, with a short runway that limits the heaviest cabins
about 22 h 40 min

Why every flight has a stop

In a straight line London to Auckland is about 9,885 nautical miles. The longest-range cabins in production are rated at 7,500 nautical miles for the Gulfstream G650ER and G700 and 7,700 for the Bombardier Global 7500, which leaves New Zealand more than 2,000 miles out of reach even on paper. A quote with no stop in it is worth reading twice.

The stop is chosen by arithmetic, not by taste. Singapore splits London to Auckland into legs of about 6,080 and 4,722 nautical miles, both inside the planning limit we use for a G650ER. Dubai makes the first leg short, about 3,066 miles, but leaves about 7,974 for the second, more than any cabin in production can fly with passengers and bags aboard, so it does not work for New Zealand. A routing east across the Pacific is also flyable, and we compare the options for your dates when we quote; the figures on this page follow the Singapore stop.

Twenty-odd hours is longer than one crew may work, so the aircraft flies with an augmented crew or changes crew at the stop, and the operator's duty-time rules decide which. It is a real cost, and it belongs in the quote from the first figure.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The New Zealand airport you choose barely moves the price. From London Stansted, Dunedin, Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington fall within about £3,700 of one another, because the stop is the same and only the second leg changes by a few dozen miles. Choose the airport by the address you are going to and by what its runway and customs allow, not by the tariff;

– Where in Britain you leave matters a little more. Belfast costs about £5,450 more than Stansted for the same destination, and the Scottish and northern English airfields sit between the two. These are one-way figures, and on a sector this long a one-way price includes the empty flight home, because there is rarely a passenger waiting in New Zealand to fly the aircraft back. A return trip is quoted as a round trip, and an empty leg in the right direction can lower either half. Handling, airport charges, catering and the crew costs of a long duty day appear as lines of their own in the quote.

Private jet flights within New Zealand and to its neighbours

New Zealand looks small on a world map and behaves like a long thin country on the ground: Auckland to Queenstown is 576 nautical miles, further than London to Munich, with Cook Strait between the two islands. These are the hops we are asked for, with Sydney, Fiji and the Cook Islands as the neighbours that clients most often add:

Two things worth knowing about the New Zealand sectors

– The aircraft that brought you from London is rarely the one that flies the local legs. The Civil Aviation Authority's guidance for foreign operators says that carrying passengers or freight between two points within New Zealand is not permitted, and that a domestic movement is allowed only as the continuation of an international flight on which nobody is picked up or set down on the way. On that principle we book the domestic legs of a charter on a New Zealand-registered aircraft and name the operator in the quote;

– Holding an ultra-long-range cabin on a New Zealand apron for a fortnight is an expensive way to own a domestic flight. The usual shape of the trip is the long cabin out and released, a local midsize jet or turboprop for the sectors inside the country, and a long cabin brought back for the return, which is normally the difference between a sensible bill and an absurd one.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Prices depending on the type of business jet

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for New Zealand:

Ultra-long range

The only class that crosses from Britain with one stop. On a journey of twenty-odd hours a flat bed is the point of the aircraft, not an indulgence.

Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h
Bombardier Global 7500 · 14 seatsfrom £8,300/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h

Large cabins

Too short in range for the journey from Britain, and used for the trans-Tasman hop to Australia and for the longer domestic sectors once you have arrived.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h

Super-midsize

Not for the journey from Britain, but the right size for Auckland to Queenstown or Wellington to Christchurch, booked locally.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Light jets

The aircraft for the short North Island sectors and for airfields with a modest runway, flown by New Zealand operators once you are on the ground.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Turboprops

For the lodges, the coast and the strips where the runway is short and the alternative is a long drive. Booked locally as part of an itinerary, not flown from Britain.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

On a route this long the aircraft is sourced wherever it happens to be positioned, often the Gulf or Asia, which is one more reason to send the dates as soon as they are real.

Business aviation airports in New Zealand

An aircraft arriving from abroad cannot land wherever it likes. The Ministry for Primary Industries requires an overseas private aircraft to arrive at an approved place of first arrival, and landing elsewhere without approval is an offence under the Biosecurity Act. For private and non-scheduled flights the working list is short:

Airport Ground How it operates
Auckland
AKL / NZAA
about 21 km south of the centre A single runway, 05R/23L, of 3,635 metres, and no curfew. ExecuJet Auckland, at 5A Hape Drive, is the private terminal, with a dedicated ramp, direct airside access, a lounge that houses customs and immigration processing, a crew lounge and a listed round-the-clock service. It is also the only airport in the country where border officers are on duty 24 hours a day
Wellington
WLG / NZWN
about 5.5 km south-east of the centre A single runway of about 1,815 metres on a low isthmus between the city hills and Cook Strait, with a reputation for rough winds. A night curfew runs from midnight to 06:00, international arrivals may land as late as 01:00 and exceptions are made on request. Capital Jet Services, listed under the ExecuJet name, runs the FBO at 91 Tirangi Road with a hangar on a private apron, a VIP lounge and tow machines sized for aircraft up to a G650 or Global Express. Staffed 08:30 to 17:00 and on request outside those hours
Christchurch
CHC / NZCH
about 12 km north-west of the centre Runways of 3,288 and 1,741 metres, free of any curfew and open round the clock. GCH Jet Centre, at 73 Grays Road, offers ground handling and hangarage with a listed 24-hour service. The airport is also the long-standing base for the American and New Zealand flights to Antarctica, so the ramp is shared with a serious operation
Queenstown
ZQN / NZQN
in Frankton, on the lake side of the town A 1,777 metre runway at 357 metres above sea level, ringed by mountains and approached on RNP AR procedures for which crews are specially trained. A noise abatement curfew applies from 22:00, although runway lighting allows operations after sunset. Corporate jets use a dedicated terminal beside the international arrivals area, built by the Auckland and Wellington handlers and listed as taking up to eight passengers plus crew
Dunedin
DUD / NZDN
about 22 km south-west of the city A 1,900 metre runway and customs facilities in the terminal. Customs lists it among the six airports where a private flight may arrive without special permission, which makes it a real alternative to Queenstown for Otago and the far south
Hamilton
HLZ / NZHN
about 14 km south of the city A 2,195 metre runway, open round the clock although the tower is not staffed at all hours, in which case Bay Approach or Christchurch Information provides the air traffic service. It handles light business jets and is the field for the Waikato, with customs listing it as an airport of first arrival

Four rules settle most New Zealand arrivals before a quote goes out:

Six airports with no special permission

Customs lists Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin and Hamilton as airports where private and non-scheduled flights can arrive, each being both a Customs place and an approved place of first arrival.

Everywhere else: ten working days

Landing at any other airfield needs prior approval from Customs and from the Ministry at least ten working days ahead. The Ministry grants it only in exceptional circumstances, and an application based on convenience is likely to be declined.

Working hours, and the night exception

Flights are expected to arrive and leave in working hours. Outside them the operator needs approval at least five working days ahead on Customs form NZCS 361.

Passenger data three hours ahead

Names, passport numbers and dates of birth of everyone aboard go to Customs at least three hours before the flight into New Zealand departs, which on this route means before the leg out of Singapore.

Why the lodge or the vineyard is a second leg and not the first

A private airstrip at a lodge, a farm or a vineyard is a non-designated field, and landing there first falls under the same prior approval as any other. Ministry guidance says plainly that it will be granted in exceptional circumstances only. It is faster and surer to clear the border at one of the six airports above and fly the last stretch on a New Zealand-registered aircraft.

Arriving from Britain: NZeTA, customs and biosecurity

A British passport holder needs no visa for a stay of up to six months but must hold an electronic travel authority before leaving, the aircraft needs its permissions in its own name, and the arrival is checked by two agencies. Of the two, biosecurity is the one that catches people out.

NZeTA before departure
British citizens visit without a visa for up to six months but need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority, which can take up to 72 hours to process, and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is paid with the application
every passenger, before leaving
Passport
The passport must be valid for at least three months after the planned departure from New Zealand, and the countries on the routing may ask for more
every passenger, children included
Traveller Declaration
Every traveller completes the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, which is free and online or in an app; on an air journey it can be submitted up to 24 hours ahead and must be in before passport control
before passport control
Food and goods
Most food imports are illegal, and anything prohibited, taxable or dutiable must be declared; the fine for a breach can reach NZ$100,000, and prison is possible
declare everything in doubt

The three approvals behind every arrival

The airport and the paperwork. The aircraft arrives at one of the six approved airports. The operator emails Customs the passenger details at least three hours before departure and an Inward Report on form C1A, and nobody and nothing leaves the aircraft until Customs and Ministry officers give permission. Anyone carrying NZ$10,000 or more in cash or its equivalent completes a border cash report.

The flight. The Civil Aviation Authority separates two cases. A private flight carries the owner, family or immediate employees with no hire or reward and needs no application, though the aircraft must be registered, hold an ICAO airworthiness certificate and meet Part 91, and it may be inspected in New Zealand. A paid flight is an air transport operation: a foreign operator may make one landing and one take-off in any 28 days without certification, and more than that needs a Foreign Air Operator Certificate. Where a flight lands at one New Zealand port and leaves from another, the Ministry of Transport authorises it, with at least five working days' notice for two or more flights. The Authority adds that the label private charter has no meaning in New Zealand. We prepare the right route and confirm in writing which applies.

The biosecurity. The aircraft must be disinsected before it arrives, and the operator tells the Ministry through the airport operator the place and time of arrival and the disinsection status. All goods, baggage and waste come off only at an approved airport, and waste for disposal goes through the airport's approved systems. Border levies for Customs and for biosecurity are invoiced to the address on the advance notice and paid before the aircraft leaves.

Catering needs thought on the last leg. Food loaded in Singapore that is not eaten is waste on arrival, so the final meal is planned to match the landing time and not the other way round.

Leaving is simpler. The operator gives Customs at least two hours' notice of departure, preferably 24, on form C2A, and Customs issues a certificate of clearance; there are no biosecurity requirements on the way out. Coming home is a flight into Britain: a General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation for Britain, though most other nationalities do.

Which airport for which part of New Zealand

The arrival airport follows the address you are going to. These are the usual pairings, with the road or air leg that finishes the journey:

Auckland and the north
the airport is 21 km south of the centre, with the harbour, the business district and the Hauraki Gulf to the north
Auckland
Waikato and Hamilton
Hamilton has a 2,195 metre runway 14 km south of the city, and the Fieldays site at Mystery Creek lies near it
Hamilton
Wellington and the capital
5.5 km from the centre, with a midnight curfew and a gusty approach that suits a daytime arrival
Wellington
Christchurch and Canterbury
a curfew-free field 12 km north-west of the city, with the Southern Alps inland
Christchurch
Queenstown and the ski fields
Coronet Peak is 18 km and the Remarkables 26 km from town, with Cardrona and Treble Cone within reach
Queenstown
Fiordland and Milford Sound
reached by helicopter from Queenstown, with one listed flight taking 90 minutes and including two alpine landings
Queenstown, then helicopter
Dunedin and Otago
a 1,900 metre runway 22 km from the city and customs in the terminal
Dunedin

Auckland, the capital, the lakes and the south: what our clients go for

Auckland is where most of the business lands. The airport is 21 km south of the centre, ExecuJet's terminal works round the clock and the border is staffed at night, which is why a long-haul party that does not mind the hour usually begins here.

Wellington is the capital and a different kind of airport. The runway is about 1,815 metres, the wind off Cook Strait has given it a reputation for rough landings even in larger aircraft, and the midnight curfew with a 01:00 allowance for international arrivals shapes the day. Clients who come for meetings plan a daytime arrival and keep the heavy aircraft elsewhere.

Christchurch is the practical gateway to the South Island. It has a runway of 3,288 metres, far longer than Queenstown's or Dunedin's, no curfew, a handler with hangarage, and a routine of supporting Antarctic flights, so no one on the ramp is surprised by a long-range aircraft.

Queenstown is the leisure and sport end of the country. The lake, the ski fields at Coronet Peak and the Remarkables, and the helicopter flights over Fiordland draw the party, while the mountains around the airfield draw the attention of the crew. A jet-capable airfield with a dedicated corporate terminal, a short runway and an evening curfew is workable for a midsize aircraft and a careful briefing, which is why many parties land the long-range cabin in Auckland or Christchurch and continue on a local jet.

Hamilton and the Waikato serve the farming economy. Each June the Fieldays at Mystery Creek turns that into a crowd of more than 100,000 visitors, and a business aircraft covers the 60 nautical miles from Auckland in well under an hour.

New Zealand seasons: summer at Christmas, snow in July

The seasons run opposite to Britain's, and the South Island has a winter business of its own:

December to February
the southern summer and the long holiday, when the lakes, the coast and the islands are busiest and the north is at its warmest
summer
Early June to early October
the ski season; Coronet Peak typically opens in early June and runs to early October, and the Remarkables from late June to mid October
ski season
June to August
the southern winter, with short days; Queenstown's runway lighting allows operations after sunset, but its noise abatement curfew applies from 22:00
winter, and a curfew to respect
September to October
spring, with the capital's World of Wearable Art show listed for these months
spring

A British summer holiday lands in a New Zealand winter

A trip in July or August arrives in the middle of the ski season, which suits Queenstown and the helicopter operators and does not suit anyone who wants a beach. A trip over Christmas arrives at midsummer, with the whole country on holiday. We ask for the month first and the airport second.

The New Zealand calendar: a harbour regatta, a farming show and the ski season

Dated events are fewer than in Europe, and each pulls on a different airport:

Around 29 January
The Auckland Anniversary Day regatta on the Waitemata Harbour, which NZ History describes as possibly the largest event of its kind in the world, with everything from yachts to tugboats and dragon boats on the water
Early June to early October
The ski season at Queenstown, with Coronet Peak opening first and the Remarkables following in late June
Mid June
The National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek near Hamilton, an annual show of more than 100,000 visitors and about 1,000 exhibitors
September to October
World of Wearable Art in Wellington, a fashion and art show listed for these months

What a New Zealand event does to a flight plan

Auckland has no curfew and a round-the-clock border, so big dates there fill the ramp and not the clock. Queenstown in the ski season is the opposite: a short runway, an evening curfew and a small corporate terminal, so a party for a busy week is requested as early as the dates are public.

Flying to New Zealand with a dog or a cat

New Zealand does admit cats and dogs from Britain, but the process is slow and the rules are specific. The first answer for an owner is the calendar.

The facts to read before you book

The Ministry for Primary Industries sorts countries into categories by rabies status, and the United Kingdom is listed among those where rabies is absent or well controlled. A cat or dog from such a country needs an import permit, which the Ministry takes at least 30 working days to process, and after arrival it spends a minimum of 10 days in quarantine at an approved facility. Pets can enter only through Auckland or Christchurch, the two airports the Ministry names as able to receive them.

The Ministry's pages say nothing about animals on private aircraft, so the question of whether the animal may ride in the cabin of a business jet, or must travel on another flight, goes to the Ministry before any plan is made. We put it in writing for you.

  • An ISO microchip, implanted before the vaccination and the blood sample, and scanned at every veterinary visit;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least three months old and kept continuously valid from the day of the blood sample;
  • A rabies neutralising antibody blood test at an approved laboratory with a result of 0.5 IU/ml or higher, sampled at least three weeks after the vaccine and not less than three months or more than two years before departure;
  • The parasite treatments and the veterinary examination before shipment that the Ministry sets for the category;
  • An identity check: the revised import standard adds a microchip scan by an official vet at least six months before shipment, and we confirm which version of the standard applies to your dates;
  • A booked place at a quarantine facility, taken early because space is limited around the summer holidays.

Some dogs cannot be imported at all. The Brazilian Fila, the Dogo Argentino, the Japanese Tosa, the Perro de Presa Canario and the American Pit Bull Terrier type are prohibited, and hybrids are not eligible.

The three-month wait after the blood sample sets a floor under the whole process, and the permit's 30 working days runs alongside it, so a realistic plan starts several months before the flight. A lapsed vaccination or an out-of-order test costs weeks, and for a holiday of two weeks the animal usually stays at home, a point we make at the first call and not in the last week.

The way back is simpler. Britain places New Zealand in Part 2 of its list of countries, which means a Great Britain pet health certificate issued within ten days of travel, with the animal arriving within those ten days, and a pet passport or Animal Health Certificate cannot be used. The animal must wait 21 days after the primary rabies vaccination, and a dog needs a vet's tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before it enters Great Britain; cats have no further requirement for this country. For a private flight we confirm the entry point and the paperwork for the animal in writing before the flight.

Requirements for other species are more restrictive still, and the destinations where an animal does travel beside you are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the most expensive sector we sell, the cash saving is large, and so is the catch.

Why they exist on this route and why they are rare

– Every ultra-long-range aircraft that delivers a party to New Zealand has to leave again, and holding one on an apron is costly enough that operators usually prefer to fly it home. The legs home from New Zealand are the useful ones;

– The aircraft is seldom in the right place: a leg from Christchurch to London suits a client in the South Island and not one in Auckland, so a match needs the right city as well as the right week;

– Frequency is the limit. These flights appear occasionally and not weekly, so the realistic approach is to register interest, and not to plan the trip around one.

A client who can offer the month and not the day has the best chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of New Zealand empty legs follows, at roughly 40 percent of a fresh charter:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
UK (London Luton) - New Zealand (Dunedin) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £141,550
New Zealand (Auckland) - UK (London Stansted) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,000
New Zealand (Auckland) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,200
New Zealand (Auckland) - UK (London Gatwick) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,300
New Zealand (Christchurch) - UK (Birmingham) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,800
UK (Edinburgh) - New Zealand (Auckland) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,900
UK (Manchester) - New Zealand (Auckland) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £142,950
UK (Farnborough) - New Zealand (Wellington) Gulfstream G650ER 14 seats £143,400

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. The cheapest leg in the table, with eight aboard, comes to about £17,700 a head;

– What you give up is the date, often the hour and sometimes the arrival airport. The saving is large in absolute terms because the underlying figure is large.

Helicopter charter

In New Zealand a helicopter is less a shortcut across a city than a way into country that roads reach slowly. The airport transfers are short, and the mountain flights are the reason people ask. Garden City Helicopters is based beside the main airport at Christchurch and flies charters as well as rescue and medical missions, while Heliworks Queenstown runs its flights from a base at Frankton:

Auckland Airport to the city
the airport is about 21 km from the centre
about 15 min
Christchurch Airport to the city
the airport is about 12 km north-west of the centre
about 10 min
Wellington Airport to the city
the airport is about 5.5 km from the centre, so the leg is minutes
about 10 min
Auckland to Hamilton
the Waikato and the Fieldays site at Mystery Creek
about 40 min
Queenstown to Milford Sound
one listed flight lasts 90 minutes and includes two alpine landings
by arrangement

The airport times are straight-line estimates at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the route for your date. The Milford Sound flight crosses Lake Wakatipu and the Richardson Mountains, passes over the Hollyford Valley and lands once in Fiordland National Park and once at Earnslaw Burn, beneath hanging glaciers.

Two points on New Zealand rotary legs

Weather decides the mountain flights, so the day of a Fiordland trip should have a spare day beside it, and the operator flies the landings it has arranged and not an improvised one. A landing at a private property, a lodge or a vineyard needs the site agreed in advance. We book the rotary leg with the rest of the itinerary so the crews work to one schedule.

New Zealand charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

AUCKLAND · THE QUOTE WITH NO STOP

A director who had been told it could be done in one leg

London Stansted - Auckland, Gulfstream G650ER via Singapore, about 22 h 55 min · 6 pax

Another broker had quoted a nonstop. The distance is close to 9,900 nautical miles and the aircraft is rated at 7,500, so the flight as sold did not exist. We showed the numbers and routed through Singapore with the crew arrangement priced in, and the party arrived on the evening of the following day, as the clocks go.

QUEENSTOWN · A SKI WEEK

Six guests for the ski fields

London Biggin Hill - Christchurch, Gulfstream G650ER via Singapore, about 23 h · 6 pax

Queenstown has a 1,777 metre runway and an evening curfew, so the long-range cabin cleared the border at Christchurch, which is open round the clock, and a local Citation XLS+ flew the last 195 nautical miles, about 55 min. The ski fields were 18 and 26 km from the town, and the party was on the snow the next morning.

WELLINGTON · THE CAPITAL IN A DAY

A company board with meetings in the capital

London Farnborough - Wellington, Gulfstream G650ER via Singapore, about 23 h 10 min · 5 pax

The handler is listed as staffed from 08:30 and the airport has a midnight curfew, so the landing was set for the middle of the day. With a runway of about 1,815 metres at Wellington, the aircraft was positioned empty to Auckland after the drop, where 3,635 metres of runway are available for the long departure, and the party joined it there for the return.

WITH THE DOG · THE CALENDAR COMES FIRST

A family relocating with one dog

London Stansted - Auckland, Gulfstream G650ER · 4 pax, animal separately

They asked about taking the dog in the cabin on a date six weeks away. The permit alone takes at least 30 working days to process, the blood test must be sampled at least three months before departure, and the dog spends a minimum of 10 days in quarantine after arrival. We laid out the sequence at the first call, they moved the date, and the dog entered through Auckland.

FIORDLAND · THE HELICOPTER DAY

Four friends who wanted the mountains

Manchester - Auckland, Gulfstream G650ER via Singapore, about 23 h 05 min · 4 pax

The border was cleared at Auckland, and a local Challenger 350 flew the 576 nautical miles to Queenstown, about 1 h 45 min. The helicopter day to Milford Sound, a 90-minute flight with two landings, was booked with a spare day beside it for the weather, and the lodge asked for nothing more.

EMPTY LEG · HOMEWARD FROM AUCKLAND

A flexible return after a long stay

Auckland - London Gatwick, Gulfstream G650ER empty leg, about 23 h · 5 pax

The client gave us a month instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £142,300, roughly 40 percent of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a departure that suited the aircraft's schedule and not the other way round.

Frequently asked questions about flying to New Zealand

1Can a private jet fly from London to Auckland nonstop?

No. Auckland is about 9,885 nautical miles from London in a straight line, and the longest-range business jets in production are rated at 7,500 to 7,700 nautical miles. Every private flight to New Zealand includes a technical stop, usually in Singapore, which splits the journey into two legs that a Gulfstream G650ER can fly.

2How long does a private jet take from the UK to New Zealand?

About 22 hours 55 minutes to Auckland from London Stansted with a stop in Singapore, including the stop, and a few minutes more or less to Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin or Queenstown. New Zealand is eleven to thirteen hours ahead of Britain, so a morning departure lands in the evening of the next day.

3How much does a private jet to New Zealand cost?

From about £338,100 one way from London Stansted to Auckland on a Gulfstream G650ER through Singapore. Every figure includes the technical stop and, on a sector this long, the empty flight home of a one-way charter. The New Zealand airport you choose changes the price by only a few thousand pounds. An empty leg in the right direction costs roughly 40 percent of a fresh charter.

4What do passengers need to enter New Zealand on a private flight?

British citizens can visit without a visa for up to six months but need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority before they leave, and every traveller completes the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before passport control. The operator sends Customs the passenger details at least three hours before departure, the aircraft must be disinsected before it arrives, and food and other biosecurity risk items must be declared.

5Can my dog or cat travel with me to New Zealand on a private jet?

Cats and dogs from Britain can be imported, but only through Auckland or Christchurch, with an import permit that takes the Ministry for Primary Industries at least 30 working days to process, a rabies blood test sampled at least three months before departure and a minimum of 10 days in quarantine after arrival. The Ministry's pages do not address private aircraft, so we confirm in writing whether the animal can ride in the cabin.

6Which airports can a private jet use to enter New Zealand?

Customs lists Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin and Hamilton as the airports where private and non-scheduled flights can arrive without special permission. Auckland is the only one with border officers on duty round the clock, Christchurch has no curfew, Wellington has a curfew from midnight and Queenstown a noise curfew from 22:00. Any other airfield needs approval at least ten working days ahead.
