Private jet charter in Panama

Between London and the Panama Canal lie 4,734 nautical miles of open Atlantic and Caribbean, and the only real question a client has to settle is whether the jet makes a stop on the way. Private Jets UK builds these trips around that answer, and then around the day at the other end. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Panama that means a private terminal at Tocumen, a second city airport five minutes from downtown, and a landing permit that has to be requested well before the aircraft leaves Britain.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Panama depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, a Dassault Falcon 900LX to Tocumen International Airport in Panama City with one technical stop in the Azores, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Panama?

It depends on whether the aircraft can cross in one hop. A Falcon 900LX is published at about 4,750 nautical miles, and the line from Farnborough to Panama City is 4,734, which leaves nothing in hand against a westbound wind. So the Falcon flies two legs through Santa Maria in the Azores, 1,400 nautical miles and then 3,510, together 176 nautical miles more than the straight line, and the second leg keeps about 1,240 nautical miles of range in reserve. A Global 6000 or a Gulfstream covers the whole distance without landing. Panama keeps UTC-5 all year with no daylight saving, so it is five hours behind Britain in winter and six hours behind from late March to late October. The times below are westbound, against the usual wind, and count flying time only:

London to Panama City, Falcon 900LX via the Azores
4,910 nautical miles from Farnborough in two legs, with about an hour on the ground at Santa Maria
about 12 h plus the stop
London to Panama City, Global 6000 non-stop
4,734 nautical miles from Farnborough, with about 1,266 nautical miles of range in hand
about 10 h 30 min
London to Panama City, Gulfstream G550 non-stop
4,734 nautical miles in a wide cabin
about 10 h 30 min
London to Panama City, Gulfstream G650ER non-stop
4,734 nautical miles, the fastest cabin on the list
about 10 h 15 min
Belfast to Panama City, Global 6000 non-stop
4,564 nautical miles, the shortest crossing from any British airfield on our list
about 10 h 10 min
Panama City to London, Global 6000 non-stop
4,734 nautical miles with the jet stream behind the aircraft
about 8 h 55 min

Why the smaller jets need more stops, and what the day looks like

A Praetor 600 or a Challenger 605 is the usual answer to the Atlantic, but Panama is further on than the islands. The second leg from Santa Maria alone is 3,510 nautical miles, close to the published range of those types, and a headwind can eat what is left. They can reach the country with two technical stops, which adds a second landing and a second hour on the ground, and we do not recommend it to a party that is paying to save time.

The way home is kinder. The jet stream blows from west to east, so a Global 6000 that needs about 10 h 30 min westbound is back in about 8 h 55 min. A Falcon 900LX that leaves Farnborough at eight in the morning is in the air for roughly 12 h and spends an hour at Santa Maria, so it touches down in Panama City at about four in the afternoon local time in winter and three in the afternoon in summer. For a three-day business trip we advise the non-stop jet, and for a family holiday of ten days the Falcon with a stop is the sensible price.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– From Farnborough a Falcon 900LX with the Azores stop starts at £121,600, a Global 6000 non-stop comes to £128,150, a Gulfstream G550 to £134,150 and a Gulfstream G650ER to £151,200. The Global buys about 1 h 30 min less flying and no hour at Santa Maria, and the shorter crossing from Belfast brings it down to £123,700;

– A one-way price carries the aircraft's journey home. The jet has to recross the Atlantic whether it carries you or not, so a single outbound flight is priced close to half of a return trip and not as a bargain. A stay booked as a return, or a flexible date that catches an empty leg, changes the arithmetic more than any negotiation can. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport, by distance band, and we show it as a separate line in the quotation.

Private jet flights within Panama and to its neighbours

Panama is a narrow country, and almost everything a private client wants lies within an hour of the capital. A foreign-registered jet with a domestic leg needs a conventional permit with hard copies sent to the civil aviation authority six working days ahead, so for hops inside the country a local operator with a turboprop is usually the practical answer. The table prices each sector with the aircraft a jet broker would normally put on it:

Route Aircraft Flight time Price, one way

Panama City - Miami (Opa-locka)
1,053 nm / 1,950 km
Challenger 350
up to 9
about 2 h 50 min from £21,500

Two things worth knowing about the sectors

– The short hops are turboprop work. The times above include taxi and climb, which is why they exceed the 20 to 30 minutes of a scheduled turboprop from Albrook to Contadora, and Bocas del Toro sells no fuel, so an aircraft that lands there carries what it needs for the way back;

– Every sector to Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico or Florida is an international arrival at the far end, with its own forms. San Jose is the nearest of the Costa Rican airports, Cartagena the usual Colombian beach city, Cancun the Mexican resort stop and Opa-locka the business airport for Miami, and British passengers going to Florida need an approved ESTA or a visa.

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Panama:

Turboprops

Not an option for the crossing from Britain, but the right aircraft for the strips of the islands and the highlands. The Pilatus PC-12 and the King Air 350 take the shorter fields that a business jet cannot use.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Light jets

A light jet is a regional aircraft here: Panama City to Cartagena, Bogota or San Jose with four to six people. From Britain no light jet attempts the crossing, so we do not offer it.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Super-midsize

The Praetor 600 is the smallest aircraft we would put on the crossing, with two technical stops, and it then works the region. The Citation XLS+ is the value choice for hops between Panama and its neighbours.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Heavy jets

The class for a family with staff or a delegation of eight to twelve on the regional sectors. The Challenger 605 and Legacy 650 handle Florida and Mexico comfortably, though they need two stops from Britain.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Ultra-long range

The class that flies to Panama in earnest. A Falcon 900LX is the cheapest with one stop in the Azores, and the Global and Gulfstream types cross the whole way in a wider cabin, with the Gulfstream G650ER the quickest.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Business aviation airports in Panama

Panama has two city airports that matter to a jet from Britain and a handful of regional ones. Tocumen and Albrook are only 12 nautical miles apart, and the choice between them depends on the aircraft and on who is waiting at the other end. The table lists them:

Airport Ground How it operates
Tocumen International
PTY / MPTO
on the eastern outskirts of Panama City, about 20 minutes by road from the centre The main gateway and the country's international airport. Of its two runways, 03L/21R, about 2,682 metres, is used mainly for cargo and private flights, and 03R/21L, about 3,050 metres, takes the airline traffic. It is a 24-hour airport of entry with customs, immigration and quarantine, and no slots are required. Ground handlers do not normally work round the clock, so overtime can apply
Signature Panama City
General aviation terminal at Tocumen
on the airport, away from the airline concourses The private terminal listed for business aircraft, about 7,000 square feet, with passenger and crew lounges, a hangar, fuelling, catering and ground power. Directories give its hours as round the clock in one place and 06:00 to 22:00 with after-hours service on request in another, so the handler confirms them for the date. Customs and immigration are listed at the terminal, while the Universal Weather guide describes clearance in the main terminal, typically in under 20 minutes
Marcos A. Gelabert International
PAC / MPMG, known as Albrook
about 1.5 kilometres west of the centre, a five-minute drive from the city The old Albrook air force field, now the base of the domestic airlines. One asphalt runway, 01/19, of about 1,800 metres (5,906 feet), which takes business jets but not large airliners. An airport of entry open from 06:00 to about 22:00 local time, with overtime on two hours' notice, where customs and immigration are handled inside the FBO and its VIP lounge. The closest field to the hotels and banks, and the departure point for the Pearl Islands and Bocas del Toro
Panama Pacifico International
BLB / MPPA
about eight kilometres south-west of the city, across the Bridge of the Americas The former Howard air force base, with a runway of about 2,590 metres (18/36) and some low-cost airline flights. An airport of entry with customs and Jet A-1, where handling is mandatory. Airport hours are listed as 08:30 to 16:30 local time and the tower as 06:00 to 22:00, with visual approaches only, so it suits a daytime arrival on the west side of the city
Scarlett Martinez International
RIH / MPSM
about three kilometres east of the town of Rio Hato, in Cocle province The airport of the Pacific beach resorts, with a runway of about 2,450 metres (17/35). It was rebuilt with the stated aim of taking pressure off Tocumen and serving charter flights. For a resort weekend it saves the drive from the capital, though services for a business jet are thinner than in the city
Enrique Malek International
DAV / MPDA
in David, the capital of Chiriqui province in the west The gateway for the highlands of Boquete and the Costa Rican border. An airport of entry with a runway of about 2,100 metres (6,890 feet), open from 06:00 to 22:00 local time with overtime on request. Fuel needs 48 hours' notice, and customs and immigration are in the main terminal, where we ask for written confirmation that they will be available before the aircraft leaves
Bocas del Toro Isla Colon
BOC / MPBO
on Isla Colon, in the Caribbean archipelago near the Costa Rican border An airport of entry open from 06:00 to 22:00 local time, with customs and immigration in the main terminal between 08:00 and 15:00. No fuel is sold, which matters for any jet that lands here. In practice it is a turboprop destination served from Albrook
Contadora
OTD / MPRA
on Contadora island, in the Pearl Islands The only strip in the archipelago that can take small commercial aircraft, with a runway that runs across the width of the island. Flights from Albrook take under half an hour, and the strip suits turboprops, not a business jet
Santa Maria
LPAZ
3,510 nautical miles to the north-east, in the Azores The usual technical stop on the way out. Its runway is 3,048 metres long and it has handled transatlantic traffic for decades. We name it in the quote, and the passengers normally stay aboard while the aircraft is refuelled

Four points settle most arrivals before a quote goes out:

Permits: ask early

The official lead time for a landing permit is six business days, although a single stop inside the country can often be approved faster at the authority's discretion. Requests are made online and processed from Monday to Thursday, 07:30 to 15:30 local time, and the permit number goes into item 18 of the flight plan.

Slots: none, but parking is tight

No airport in Panama needs a slot or prior permission. Parking can be limited at Tocumen and Albrook in the high season, and hangar space is available by prior arrangement at both. We ask for a stand when the quote is accepted.

Fuel: avoid the airline peaks

At Tocumen the airline peaks run about 06:30 to 10:00, 11:30 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 21:00 local time, and scheduled flights get fuelling priority, so a business jet can wait up to 45 minutes. Outside those windows a quick turn takes about 40 minutes, and Albrook is the usual alternative for a quick stop in the peaks.

Paperwork: the same for private and charter

The permit request needs the registration, type and weight of the aircraft, the pilots' names and licence numbers and the name of the lead passenger. Insurance and noise certificates and a full passenger list are not asked for, and the rules are the same for a private flight and a charter.

The handler matters more than the terminal

At Tocumen the private terminal is listed under the Signature name, and at Panama Pacifico the handlers are Aerosupport and Mapiex. For David, Albrook and the island strips the handler is named in the quotation. All times here are Panama local time, UTC-5.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

A private flight from London arrives as an international flight, and everyone aboard clears customs, immigration and quarantine at the airport of entry.

Passports
the passport must expire at least six months after the date you plan to leave Panama and have at least one blank page; British citizens can visit for up to three months without a visa and cannot normally extend the stay
every passenger, children included
Onward ticket and funds
border control may ask to see a return or onward ticket and proof of at least US$1,000 or a credit card, and an address and a contact number in Panama; we put the return itinerary in writing for the party
prepare in advance
Yellow fever
a vaccination certificate is needed only for travellers arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk; a departure from London with a technical stop in the Azores does not trigger it
check the routing
Arrival cards
Panama asks for arrival and departure cards, which the handler can complete in advance if the passport details reach us early
send details early
Cash and goods
cash or negotiable instruments worth more than US$10,000 are declared on entering or leaving, and anything prohibited or liable to duty is declared on arrival
declare when in doubt
Departure tax
a tax of US$40 usually applies on leaving by air and is normally included in an airline ticket; on a private flight the quotation shows whether it is settled in advance or at the airport
settled in advance

How clearance works at the terminal

At Tocumen the party clears customs, immigration and quarantine, usually in under 20 minutes, with the handler arranging a separate line and filling in the cards. At Albrook clearance takes place inside the FBO. David and Bocas del Toro clear in the main terminal, and Bocas does so only between 08:00 and 15:00, so the arrival time is chosen around it. A technical stop where nobody leaves the aircraft needs no passports, but if the airport has no fire cover for fuelling, everyone must step off while the jet is fuelled.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do. Goods bought in Panama are declared on arrival in Britain like any other import from outside the country.

Which airport for which part of Panama

Most trips begin in the capital and fan out from there by turboprop or boat. These are the usual pairings:

Panama City, the Canal and the old town
banks, offices, the Casco Viejo district and the Miraflores locks all lie in or near the capital; Albrook is a five-minute drive from the centre and Tocumen about 20 minutes
Albrook (PAC) or Tocumen (PTY)
West of the Bridge of the Americas
the districts across the Bridge of the Americas, on the western side of the Canal, lie closer to the former Howard base, which suits a daytime arrival
Panama Pacifico (BLB)
Pacific beaches of Cocle
the resort strip on the Pacific coast west of the capital has its own airport at Rio Hato, which saves the drive
Rio Hato (RIH)
Pearl Islands
Contadora is the island with the strip, shops and restaurants, reached from Albrook in under half an hour, or by ferry from the Amador Causeway in an hour and a half to two hours
Albrook, then a hop
Boquete and the western highlands
coffee country at about 1,200 metres below Volcan Baru, the highest point in the country, reached from David
David (DAV)
Bocas del Toro
the Caribbean archipelago near the Costa Rican border, a turboprop hop from the capital
Albrook, then Bocas (BOC)

Land in the capital, leave from the capital

A foreign-registered jet that flies a domestic leg needs a conventional permit with paper copies sent to the authority six working days in advance, so we plan the jet to arrive and depart through Tocumen or Albrook and use local turboprops for the islands and the highlands.

Panama: what our clients go for

The Canal comes first, and it is as much a business reason as a sightseeing one. The waterway is 83 kilometres long and was completed early in the twentieth century, and the Miraflores locks on the Pacific side have a visitor centre with a museum and a ship simulator that shows a crossing.

The city is the second reason. Panama City is the financial centre of the country, with about 80 banks and a skyline that has more than a hundred towers, and it produces roughly 55 percent of national output. Panama Viejo, the ruins of the city founded in the sixteenth century and destroyed in the seventeenth, and the Casco Viejo district rebuilt afterwards are listed by UNESCO.

Islands and mountains come third. Bocas del Toro and the more than 350 San Blas islands lie on the Caribbean, the Pearl Islands in the Gulf of Panama, and Coiba, the largest island in the country, is a national park. Inland, Volcan Baru reaches 3,474 metres and Boquete grows coffee on its slopes.

The country has about 4.6 million people, Spanish is the official language and the balboa is fixed one to one to the US dollar, which is also legal tender and is the paper money in everyday use.

The year in Panama: a dry winter and a long green season

Temperatures hardly move over the year, so the calendar of visitors follows the rain:

December to mid-April
the dry season and the busiest time on the Pacific side; Panama City gets almost no rain from January to March and the visibility for snorkelling and diving is good
peak
Mid-April
a transition month: temperatures and humidity climb and the first rains arrive
turning
May to November
the green season on the Pacific coast, with short and heavy thunderstorms; October and November bring the heaviest rainfall, and some roads close for repairs from September to November
wet
Caribbean coast
short heavy bursts of rain almost every day through the year; Bocas del Toro is wettest in June and July, and its beaches are best avoided in December, when the rainfall is unusually heavy
different calendar
July to September
humpback whales pass the Pacific coast and the Pearl Islands, with whale shark sightings mainly from January to March
wildlife

Weather, hazards and the FCDO advice

Hurricanes do not strike Panama directly, though they bring heavy rain, flash floods and landslides. The FCDO lists earthquakes as a risk, warns of strong currents on many beaches and says the Bay of Panama is heavily polluted for swimming. It also names areas of street crime in the capital and in the city of Colon. We read the FCDO advice again before every departure and shape the plan around it.

The Panamanian calendar: carnival, coffee and a month of independence days

Panama's year runs on town fairs, patron-saint festivals and a cluster of national holidays in November:

January
The Flower and Coffee Fair in Boquete, in the cool highlands of Chiriqui, and Martyrs' Day on 9 January, a public holiday
February
Carnival in the towns of the interior, among them Las Tablas, Villa de Los Santos, Penonome, Chitre, Aguadulce and Ocu; the date moves with Easter and the Monday and Tuesday are public holidays
April

Flying to Panama with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travels in the cabin, and on the Panamanian side the paperwork is a matter of certificates and timing. The harder part is the way home, because Britain does not list Panama among the countries with lighter rules, and that is where the timeline is set.

The one fact to read before you book

The Ministry of Agricultural Development, MIDA, asks for a zoosanitary certificate issued by the official authority of the country of origin, apostilled or consularised and valid for no more than 30 days, together with a health certificate from a qualified vet, valid for up to 30 days, confirming that the animal was examined and has been treated for internal and external parasites. The vaccination card must be up to date for the species, and the owner notifies MIDA of the arrival three to five business days beforehand. On arrival a veterinarian at the airport reviews the original papers and inspects the animal.

Some secondary guides also describe a period of isolation at home after arrival and a rabies vaccination at least 30 days before entry, and we ask MIDA in writing which applies to your animal. An animal with incomplete papers can be sent back, so the paperwork is settled before the aircraft is booked, not on the ramp.

  • A microchip. Panama does not make it a condition of entry, but Britain does for the return, so every animal flying with us is chipped before any other step;
  • A rabies vaccination, given after the microchip and no earlier than the age of 12 weeks, with the vaccine make, batch and date on the certificate. For cats the British export certificate for Panama asks for the vaccine not less than 30 days and not more than 12 months before export;
  • A British export health certificate for Panama, signed by an official veterinarian after an examination within 48 hours before export and legalised by the Legalisation Office. We check the current form for a dog before the booking is confirmed;
  • A word with the operator. We confirm in writing the airport of entry, the inspection on arrival and what happens to the animal while the party clears customs.

The way home is where the planning starts. Panama does not appear in the table of listed countries on the British government site, so we treat it as a country that is not listed. An animal then needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel, a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, a wait of three months from the date of that sample, and a Great Britain pet health certificate. A dog must also be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain. An animal that does not meet the rules can be refused or held in quarantine for up to four months.

In practice the blood test is done in Britain months before the trip, and we confirm with the Animal and Plant Health Agency, before the booking is accepted, how the British paperwork carries the animal home after a short stay. If it does not, a dog cannot make a short trip, and we say so at the quote stage.

Rules for other species, and for countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Panama produces them in both directions, because a stay is mostly one-way work for the aircraft: it brings a party across the water and has to find its next client somewhere else.

Where Panamanian empty legs come from

– Florida and the Caribbean. Opa-locka lies 1,053 nautical miles to the north, so a jet that has dropped a party at Tocumen may fly back to Florida empty, or arrive empty to collect a group;

– Colombia. Cartagena and Bogota are one short sector away, and traffic between them and the capital leaves aircraft in the wrong place at the end of a week;

– The end of a long stay. A jet that brought guests out on a Thursday may fly home empty on the Monday, and a client with an open date can have it at a fraction of the price.

A client who can give a window of a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Panamanian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Panama - Cartagena Challenger 350 9 seats £3,700
Panama - Miami (Opa-locka) Challenger 350 9 seats £9,050
Panama - UK (London Farnborough) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £51,050
UK (Birmingham) - Panama Falcon 900LX 12 seats £51,150
Panama - UK (Manchester) Falcon 900LX 12 seats £51,300
UK (London Luton) - Panama Falcon 900LX 12 seats £51,400
UK (Belfast) - Panama Global 6000 13 seats £51,950
Panama - UK (Edinburgh) Global 6000 13 seats £53,050
Panama - UK (London Gatwick) Gulfstream G550 16 seats £56,600

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Global 6000 leg of £53,050 with eight aboard works out at about £6,630 a head, and the whole leg costs about two-fifths of a fresh one-way charter;

– Legs to and from Central America are less frequent than those on a busy European corridor, so an open date helps more than anything.

Helicopter charter and air tours

Helicopters can be chartered directly from Panama City, for a transfer or a flight to the Pearl Islands, which is the most expensive way to reach them.

A helicopter earns its fee only where the road or the sea is slow. Albrook to Contadora is 39 nautical miles and Albrook to Rio Hato 51, which a helicopter covers in about 30 and 35 minutes respectively, against 20 to 30 minutes for a scheduled turboprop to Contadora plus the wait for a seat.

If a client asks for a private helicopter

A transfer from the airport to a hotel, a lodge or a yacht depends on an operator being free on the date and on a landing site that the civil aviation authority accepts. We establish both before we put it in a quotation, and where neither can be confirmed we propose a car or a turboprop and a short drive.

Panamanian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

BOARD TRIP · SHIPPING

Three days of meetings in Panama City

Biggin Hill - Tocumen, Global 6000, about 10 h 35 min · 5 pax

The party left on the Sunday and landed in time for dinner in the old town. The long-range jet was chosen over a cheaper one with a stop because the first meeting was at nine on the Monday.

HONEYMOON · THE CARIBBEAN

Ten nights in Bocas del Toro

Farnborough - Tocumen, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h plus the stop · 2 pax

The couple flew out in the Falcon and went on to Bocas by turboprop from Albrook, since the island airport sells no fuel. The jet waited at Tocumen and brought them home.

CHRISTMAS · A FAMILY

Pearl Islands for the holidays

Birmingham - Tocumen, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h plus the stop · 6 pax

A hotel car met the jet at Tocumen and a charter turboprop took the family from Albrook to Contadora in under half an hour. Parking is tight at the turn of the year, so the stand was agreed before the quote was accepted.

WITH THE DOG · A BLOOD TEST FIRST

A couple and a spaniel for two weeks

Farnborough - Tocumen, Falcon 900LX via the Azores, about 12 h plus the stop · 2 pax + dog

The blood test was taken in Britain months before the date, the Panamanian certificates were issued inside the 30-day window, and the tapeworm treatment for the way home was booked with a local vet for the day before landing.

ONWARD · MIAMI

A week in Boquete, then Florida

Tocumen - Opa-locka, Challenger 350, about 2 h 50 min · 4 pax

The long-range jet that brought the party out went home empty, and a smaller jet made the hop to Florida. The party held ESTA approvals or visas before leaving Britain.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER EASTER

A flexible return to Edinburgh

Panama - Edinburgh, Global 6000 empty leg, about 8 h 50 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of four days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £53,050, well under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Panama

1How long does it take to fly to Panama by private jet?

About 10 hours 30 minutes non-stop from a London airfield in a Global 6000, and about 12 hours of flying plus an hour on the ground in the Azores in a Falcon 900LX. The way home is shorter with the jet stream behind the aircraft. Panama is five hours behind Britain in winter and six hours behind in summer.

2How much does a private jet to Panama cost?

From about £121,600 one way from Farnborough to Panama City in a Falcon 900LX with one technical stop in the Azores. A Global 6000 non-stop is about £128,150, a Gulfstream G550 about £134,150 and a Gulfstream G650ER about £151,200. Air Passenger Duty is charged per passenger on a departure from a British airport and is shown as a separate line in the quotation.

3Which airport do private jets use in Panama?

Tocumen International (PTY, MPTO) is the main gateway, with a general aviation terminal and no slots required. Marcos A. Gelabert (PAC, MPMG), known as Albrook, is a five-minute drive from the centre, and Panama Pacifico (BLB, MPPA), Rio Hato, David and Bocas del Toro serve other parts of the country.

4What are the passport and customs rules for a private flight from Britain to Panama?

The passport must expire at least six months after the planned departure from Panama and have a blank page, and British citizens can visit for up to three months without a visa. Cash above US$10,000 is declared, a departure tax of US$40 usually applies, and the handler fills in the arrival cards in advance.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Panama?

Yes. Panama asks for a zoosanitary certificate and a vet health certificate, each valid for no more than 30 days, an up-to-date vaccination card and notice to MIDA three to five business days before arrival. The return is the harder part: Britain does not list Panama, which means a blood test, a three-month wait and a tapeworm treatment for dogs 24 to 120 hours before landing.

6When is the best time to fly to Panama, and do I need a permit?

January to mid-April is the dry season and the busiest time, and May to November is wetter, with the heaviest rain in October and November. A landing permit is needed for every private flight, the official lead time is six business days, and there are no slots, so we request it as soon as the aircraft is chosen.
