Private jet charter to Denmark

A light jet leaves a London airfield and, an hour and thirty-five minutes later, is on the ground at Copenhagen, which makes Denmark one of the easiest foreign trips to book from Britain. Private Jets UK plans Danish charters around a country of two halves, the island of Zealand with the capital and the peninsula of Jutland with Billund, Aarhus and Aalborg, joined by a bridge and a lot of short domestic hops. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Denmark that means choosing between a gateway with slots and a small field with short hours, arranging the handler and the customs officer in advance, and sorting out the permission a British operator needs before it may fly there at all.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Denmark depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Phenom 300E to Copenhagen and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Denmark?

Denmark keeps Central European time, so clocks there read one hour ahead of Britain all year. These are the sectors from London Biggin Hill on a light jet, gate to gate:

London to Esbjerg
411 nautical miles, on the North Sea coast of Jutland, the nearest airport in this list to Britain
about 1 h 15 min
London to Billund
436 nautical miles, home of LEGO and LEGOLAND, with a 3,101 metre runway and customs that never close
about 1 h 20 min
London to Odense
462 nautical miles, the city of Hans Christian Andersen on the island of Funen
about 1 h 25 min
London to Aarhus
498 nautical miles, the second city, on the east coast of Jutland
about 1 h 25 min
London to Copenhagen
539 nautical miles, the capital and the gateway that takes every aircraft type
about 1 h 35 min
London to Bornholm
597 nautical miles, the Baltic island, reached over open water and the longest Danish sector in this list
about 1 h 40 min

A day return to Copenhagen works, and it is the usual shape of the trip

The sector is 1 h 35 min each way, so a nine o'clock take-off from Biggin Hill reaches Copenhagen at around half past eleven on the Danish clock. A meeting at one, a short lunch and wheels up at five put you back in England for dinner, and it is a common shape for a Danish booking.

From the north the picture is mixed. Newcastle is a little closer to Copenhagen than Biggin Hill, at 510 nautical miles against 539, while Edinburgh is 562 and Belfast City 663. A strong westerly on the way home is the one thing that can add a fuel stop on a light jet, and the quote shows it as a line of its own.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– The Danish end moves the price as much as the British one. Billund is 103 nautical miles closer to Biggin Hill than Copenhagen, which on the same light jet is about £1,200 less, and Esbjerg is 128 miles closer, about £1,500 less. Aalborg, at the northern end of Jutland, is only 32 miles nearer than the capital, so it saves about £350. For a destination in Jutland, landing in Jutland is the surest way to cut the bill;

– A quote for Copenhagen lists the handler, airport charges and any slot or approval fees as lines of their own. A take-off from Copenhagen between 23:00 and 06:00 Danish time needs advance approval from the airport, so a late finish to a dinner is planned with the handler beforehand. When two quotes for the same trip differ, the gap is usually in those lines and not in the flying.

Private jet flights within Denmark and to its neighbours

Denmark is small enough that a car works for much of it, but not between Zealand, Funen and Jutland with a diary to keep, and not at all for Bornholm. These are the hops we are asked for, and the neighbouring capitals clients combine with a Danish trip:

Two things worth knowing about the Danish sectors

– A British aircraft cannot fly them. A UK operator needs an EASA third-country operator authorisation and a Danish operating authorisation, which covers flights between Britain and Denmark, and it may not carry passengers between two Danish airports. Every domestic row is flown by an EU-registered operator, and the British aircraft that brought you usually positions empty and waits at another field, which the rules allow. We name the operator for each leg when we quote;

– The neighbours are all inside Schengen, so a hop to Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Oslo or Stockholm needs no passport check on arrival. Norway is outside the EU customs union, however, so a flight to Oslo carries customs formalities that the German and Dutch legs do not. Malmö in Sweden is a train or car ride over the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen Airport, so it needs no aircraft of its own.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Denmark:

Turboprops

The aircraft for the domestic hops between Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Billund, and for the small fields. From London a turboprop is a poor choice, at nearly two and a half hours for what a jet does in under two.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Light jets

The class behind most London to Copenhagen and Billund bookings, with four to six people. Roskilde has a runway of 1,799 metres and a list of banned airliner types, which suits this class and the next.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom £2,200/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Super-midsize

Where the departures from Scotland and Northern Ireland settle, and where a board of eight or nine lands. Their range removes any question of a fuel stop on the way home.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h

Heavy jets

For a delegation, a family with staff or a team. Copenhagen, Billund, Aarhus and Aalborg all have runways of more than 2,500 metres, so the limit is the apron and the handler's parking, never the runway.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom £4,600/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Ultra-long range

A range this long is wasted on a flight of under two hours, so these are rare on the British run.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Because the domestic legs need an EU-registered aircraft, the quote for a trip that crosses Denmark often names Hamburg, Copenhagen or another northern European base as the place the second aircraft starts from.

Business aviation airports in Denmark

Denmark has a capital gateway that takes everything, a reliever field at Roskilde for business and general aviation, and a ring of Jutland and island airports with their own hours. The Danish AIP gives times in UTC, with the summer timetable in brackets, so the table converts them to Danish time, which is one hour ahead of UTC in winter and two in summer:

Airport Ground How it operates
Copenhagen Kastrup
CPH / EKCH
4.4 nautical miles (about 8 km) south-south-east of the city Three runways, the longest 3,571 metres, open round the clock with customs and immigration listed as 24 hours. Slots are coordinated by Airport Coordination Denmark, and every private and executive flight must arrange a handling agent for crew and passengers. The FBO, ASE Handling at Gate A30, is listed as open 07:00 to 23:00. A take-off between 23:00 and 06:00 Danish time needs advance approval
Roskilde
RKE / EKRK
4 nautical miles south-south-east of Roskilde, 40 km by road from Copenhagen A reliever field for business and general aviation, owned by the same company as Kastrup. Runways of 1,799 and 1,500 metres, open 07:00 to 22:00 Danish time with permission needed outside, customs round the clock on one hour's notice. Handling is mandatory above 3,000 kg, and a list of airliner types is banned
Billund
BLL / EKBI
2 km north-east of the town A 3,101 metre runway with ILS on both ends, open round the clock with customs and immigration listed as 24 hours. Business aviation needs prior permission, slots above 3,500 kg are coordinated, and a take-off between 23:00 and 06:00 needs approval. De-icing on the north apron from 1 October to 30 April
Aarhus
AAR / EKAH
19.4 nautical miles (about 36 km) north-east of the city Parallel runways of about 2,700 metres, open 06:00 to 22:00 Danish time with permission needed outside. Customs follow the airport hours, handling and de-icing are by agreement, and there is no hangar space for visitors
Aalborg
AAL / EKYT
3.5 nautical miles north-west of the city Runways of 2,650 and 2,551 metres shared with the air force, open 06:00 to 23:30 Danish time. Customs and immigration are not round the clock, and a flight from outside Schengen must be notified at least three hours ahead
Odense
ODE / EKOD
5.4 nautical miles north-west of Odense A 2,000 metre runway with short weekday hours and shorter weekend ones. Anything outside them needs permission requested an hour before closing, plus an opening charge. Customs follow the airport hours with an hour's notice, and de-icing needs two hours
Esbjerg
EBJ / EKEB
5 nautical miles north-east of the city A 2,599 metre runway, open 07:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and a few hours at weekends. Customs sit at Esbjerg harbour, 11 km from the airport, and need four hours' notice. Fuel is paid with listed carnet cards
Sønderborg
SGD / EKSB
3 nautical miles north of the town A 1,795 metre runway, open to about 22:45 on weekdays with shorter hours on Saturday and Sunday. Customs on an hour's notice, and a jet take-off between 22:00 and 07:00 Danish time needs permission from the airport office
Bornholm Rønne
RNN / EKRN
2.7 nautical miles south-east of Rønne A 2,002 metre runway on the Baltic island, open about 06:00 to 22:45 on weekdays. Jet A1 only, paid with a Shell contract or card, and no hangar space for visitors

Four rules settle most Danish arrivals before a quote goes out:

Copenhagen: handler first, night approval second

Executive and private flights must arrange a handling agent before arrival, slots are coordinated, and a take-off between 23:00 and 06:00 Danish time needs advance approval. Runways 12 and 30 are closed at night.

Roskilde: a short runway and a banned list

Handling is mandatory above 3,000 kg, jets must meet ICAO noise standards, and airliner types such as the A321 and the MD-80 family are not permitted. A Challenger or a Citation fits; an A321 does not.

Aalborg: three hours before landing

A flight arriving from outside Schengen must be notified through the slot system or by email at least three hours ahead, since the customs office does not work round the clock.

Esbjerg: customs at the harbour

The customs officer sits 11 km away at the port, and four hours' notice is needed, so the clearance is arranged in advance with the handler and the officer.

Small fields work to a timetable, and a late arrival is arranged beforehand

Outside published hours most Danish fields accept a flight with prior permission, requested at least an hour before closing time and in some cases with an opening charge. Odense, Esbjerg and Sønderborg close early in the evening and keep short Sunday hours, so a return that depends on a late dinner is planned from the closing time backwards.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Denmark belongs to the European Union and to Schengen, and Britain belongs to neither. A private flight from London therefore arrives as a flight from outside both, and the border is dealt with at the Danish airport where you land, provided that airport is open to traffic from all states, which is how the Danish AIP lists the airports in the table above that have customs.

Passports
British citizens may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa; the passport must have been issued less than ten years before arrival and be valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area
every passenger, children included
Where it happens
at the terminal or FBO of the airport of arrival, where an officer checks the passports and the customs formalities are completed; at Aalborg and Esbjerg the office keeps set hours, and Esbjerg's sits at the harbour
in the building, not on the apron
Fingerprints and photographs
a first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU entry system, which is free and valid for three years; children aged 11 or under have a photograph only
allow extra time
Cash and food
cash worth about £8,500 or more is declared on entry and a certified declaration is given; meat, milk and products containing them cannot be brought into the EU
declare before you leave the terminal

Operating authorisation, no domestic legs and the way home

A British operator needs two approvals before it flies a charter into Denmark: an EASA third-country operator authorisation and an operating authorisation from the Danish transport authority for the flight itself. We check that both are in place when we propose an aircraft. The British aircraft flies the pattern UK - Denmark - UK. It may not carry passengers between two Danish airports, so a trip from Copenhagen to Aarhus is flown by an EU operator, and a positioning flight without passengers is permitted.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation, and most other nationalities do. The Faroe Islands and Greenland belong to the Kingdom of Denmark but are separate trips with their own airports and rules; British visitors need no visa to go to either for tourism.

Which airport for which part of Denmark

Denmark is small, so the arrival airport is nearly always settled by one address: the office in Ørestad, the factory near Billund, the festival field at Roskilde. These are the usual pairings:

Copenhagen and the Øresund region
the capital, the ministries and the big head offices; Malmö in Sweden lies across the 7.8 km Øresund Bridge, and the airport has its own railway station near the western end of the bridge
Copenhagen
Roskilde and the west of Zealand
the cathedral town and the festival field, about 40 km by road from Copenhagen, on a field owned by the same company as Kastrup
Roskilde, or Copenhagen
North Zealand and Helsingør
Kronborg, the castle of Hamlet, stands at the narrowest point of the Øresund on the north-east tip of Zealand
Copenhagen
Funen and Odense
Odense has a 2,000 metre runway and short weekday hours; the Great Belt link of 18 km joins Funen to Zealand by road and rail
Odense, or Copenhagen
Billund and southern Jutland
LEGO House and LEGOLAND, Vejle and Kolding, and a good start for Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, from an airport that never closes
Billund
Aarhus and eastern Jutland
the Vestas head office and, in August, Smukfest at Skanderborg; the airport lies 36 km north-east of the centre
Aarhus, or Billund
Herning and central Jutland
Herning is the exhibition town of central Jutland, with the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia
Billund
The west coast and Esbjerg
the port for North Sea energy and the ferry to the island of Fanø, with customs at the harbour
Esbjerg, or Billund
North Jutland
Aalborg and the Limfjord, with the carnival in the last week of May
Aalborg
Sønderborg and the south
Danfoss has its head office at Nordborg in the south, and the airport lies 3 nautical miles north of Sønderborg
Sønderborg
Bornholm
the Baltic island, a flight of about 1 h 40 min from Biggin Hill over open water
Bornholm Rønne

Copenhagen, Jutland and the islands: what our clients go for

Copenhagen is where the business is. A.P. Moller-Maersk has its head office at Esplanaden, and Novo Nordisk, the largest pharmaceutical company in Denmark, sits at Bagsværd, within the capital's boundary. Many Danish flights are the shortest kind: a morning meeting, a lunch, and the same aircraft home before dark.

Leisure in the capital is built on short stays. Tivoli lies next to the Central Station and runs a summer season, a Halloween season in October and a Christmas season in December. Bella Center, in Ørestad between the city and the airport, hosts the fashion fair in February and August and the main event of Copenhagen Design Week, and it is the second largest exhibition and conference centre in Scandinavia. Copenhagen's Michelin-starred restaurants are reason enough for some of our clients to fly in for a night.

Jutland is the other half of the business. Billund is the home of LEGO, and the airport, the factory, LEGO House and LEGOLAND sit close together. Aarhus is the head office city of Vestas. Herning is home to Messecenter Herning, the largest exhibition centre in Scandinavia, and Esbjerg is a North Sea port from which much of the Danish wind industry ships its turbines.

Outside the cities the country is built for a weekend. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, with a cathedral dating from about 1150. Kronborg, the castle behind Shakespeare's Elsinore, is a UNESCO site at Helsingør. And Sønderborg, in the south, is the airport for Nordborg, where Danfoss has its head office.

The Danish year: festival summer, de-icing winter

Denmark has two flying seasons that matter to a charter client, a busy summer of festivals and holidays and a winter in which ground handling changes more than the flight does:

October to March
de-icing seasons are published per airport: Billund from 1 October to 30 April, Sønderborg from 1 November to 30 April, Esbjerg from 1 November to 31 March; at Copenhagen de-icing runs round the clock on three designated taxiways, and a provider must be arranged in advance
winter
April and May
the Aalborg Carnival fills the last week of May, and the long light evenings make a day trip with a late return easier to plan at the small fields
spring
June to August
the festival summer: Roskilde at the turn of June and July, Copenhagen Jazz in July, Copenhagen Pride and the second fashion week in August, Smukfest at Skanderborg, and the families who come for LEGOLAND
peak
September and October
the Aarhus Festuge in the last week of August and the first of September, and Halloween at Tivoli and LEGOLAND
autumn

A weekend in Jutland is a Billund booking, not a Copenhagen one

Billund is the one Jutland airport open round the clock, with customs and immigration listed as 24 hours. From Biggin Hill to Billund on a Phenom 300E is £6,850 one way, about £1,200 less than the capital, and the flight takes about 1 h 20 min. For Herning, Vejle, Kolding and Ribe, the car from Billund is a fraction of the drive from the capital.

The Danish calendar: fashion weeks, festivals and the Halloween season

The dated events are few but firm, and each pulls on a different airport:

February and August
Copenhagen Fashion Week, twice a year, with the international fashion fair at Bella Center as its main trade event
Last week of May
The Aalborg Carnival, the largest carnival in Scandinavia, which fills the city for the week
Late June to early July
Roskilde Festival, eight days of music and camping with more than 130,000 visitors, held at Roskilde on Zealand
July
Copenhagen Jazz Festival, held every July in the capital
August
Copenhagen Pride, with the parade on the Saturday of Pride Week, and Smukfest at Skanderborg, a seven-day festival of around 60,000 people near Aarhus
Late August and early September
The Aarhus Festuge, ten days and about a thousand events in weeks 35 and 36
October and December
Halloween at Tivoli and LEGOLAND, then the Christmas seasons at Tivoli and at LEGOLAND

What a Danish event does to a flight plan

On a festival weekend, parking at the airfield nearest the event is the first thing to run short, and the handler's hours come next. Roskilde in the festival week and Billund in the school holidays are the combinations where we ask for the dates early and book the stand together with the slot.

Flying to Denmark with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travels in the cabin and the paperwork is the ordinary European set. Two things need planning: the airport where the animal is presented, and the date of the dog's treatment before the journey home.

The one fact to read before you book

Denmark admits pets arriving directly from outside the EU, Britain included, through three airports only: Copenhagen, Billund and Aalborg. Customs carries out the documentary and identity check there on behalf of the veterinary authority, and entry through any other airport is illegal. Roskilde, Aarhus, Odense, Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Bornholm are therefore not available for a flight from London with an animal aboard. If the animal first lands in another EU country, the check is made there and the flight on to Denmark is then an EU flight.

On the way home the rule is British. A dog must be treated against tapeworm by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before landing in Britain, and Denmark is not exempt. An animal without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months.

  • An ISO-standard microchip, fitted before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination and never after it;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with at least 21 days between the vaccination and travel;
  • An Animal Health Certificate from an official vet, issued no more than ten days before arrival in the EU and valid for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport cannot be used;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, and more than that, or an animal travelling without its owner, is treated as a commercial consignment;
  • For a dog, the tapeworm treatment described above. Denmark does not ask for one on the way in, and on a short stay it can be given by a Danish vet inside the same window.

Cats need the same list without the worming. Thirteen dog breeds and their crosses are banned in Denmark, the rule applies to visitors as well as residents, and the list is published by the veterinary authority, so any owner of a bull-type or livestock-guardian breed checks it before booking. Dogs must be on a lead on the beaches from 1 April to 30 September and in the forests all year. We tell the handler in advance and confirm in writing which airport will receive the animal.

Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Denmark produces them steadily, because a British aircraft cannot fly domestic sectors and an EU one has to be brought in.

Where Danish empty legs come from

– The positioning that follows a drop-off at Copenhagen or Billund: the British aircraft leaves empty, and the leg home is the one most often offered;

– The weeks around the big festivals, when aircraft arrive full and leave empty a day or two later;

– The EU aircraft that flies a domestic sector in Denmark and returns to its base elsewhere in Europe without passengers.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Danish empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Denmark (Billund) - UK (London Stansted) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £2,700
UK (London Luton) - Denmark (Aarhus) Phenom 300E 8 seats £3,150
Denmark (Copenhagen) - UK (London Biggin Hill) Phenom 300E 8 seats £3,400
UK (London Gatwick) - Denmark (Copenhagen) Citation CJ3+ 7 seats £3,400
Denmark (Billund) - UK (Manchester) Citation XLS+ 9 seats £3,550
Denmark (Aalborg) - UK (Birmingham) Praetor 600 9 seats £4,200
UK (Southampton) - Denmark (Copenhagen) Citation XLS+ 9 seats £4,550
UK (Edinburgh) - Denmark (Copenhagen) Challenger 350 9 seats £5,400

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Challenger 350 from Edinburgh to Copenhagen with nine aboard comes to about £600 a head;

– Danish legs follow the big dates, so an open return date helps.

Helicopter charter

Helicopter work in Denmark is short and mostly between airfields, and Copenhagen is the place where the rules are written down. A non-scheduled public helicopter flight is permitted at Kastrup only after prior approval by the airport, the helicopter stands are G110 and G111 on weekdays from 07:00 to 23:00 Danish time with permission needed for any other stand, and the airport is closed to helicopter traffic from 23:00 to 06:00. Roskilde has a helicopter landing area of its own. These are the sectors we are asked about:

Copenhagen to Roskilde
Kastrup to the reliever field on Zealand, in place of a road transfer of 40 km
about 20 min
Copenhagen to Odense
across the Great Belt to Funen, where the road and rail link is 18 km long
about 50 min
Billund to Aarhus
Jutland's LEGO airport to the east coast
about 40 min
Billund to Esbjerg
across southern Jutland to the North Sea port
about 20 min
Aarhus to Aalborg
east Jutland to the Limfjord
about 35 min
Copenhagen to Billund
the capital to Jutland, crossing the Great Belt
about 1 h 10 min

The times are straight-line estimates at a cruise of about 115 knots, and the operator confirms the route for your date.

Two points on Danish rotary legs

A landing away from an airfield, at a castle, a hotel or a private estate, needs a landing site agreed in advance with the owner, and we check this before the flight. At Kastrup, take-offs and landings are held to 80 dB(A) at six measuring positions in the surrounding residential areas, which is one more reason to agree a helicopter movement with the airport well in advance.

Danish charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

COPENHAGEN · A DAY RETURN

Two directors, a lunch and a meeting at two

Biggin Hill - Copenhagen and return, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 35 min each way · 2 pax

Wheels up at nine, on the ground before half past eleven by the Danish clock and a car to the office. The handler had the FBO and the departure slot arranged the evening before, and the aircraft was back at Biggin Hill in time for dinner.

BILLUND · LEGOLAND WEEKEND

A family of five and a long Friday

London Stansted - Billund, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 15 min · 5 pax

The airport and the park are close together, and customs and immigration are listed round the clock, so a late Friday arrival was no problem. The aircraft returned on the Sunday afternoon with the same crew.

ROSKILDE · THE FESTIVAL WEEK

Six friends who preferred a field to a queue

Farnborough - Roskilde, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 35 min · 6 pax

Roskilde works from 07:00 to 22:00 Danish time with customs on an hour's notice, so we asked for the arrival the day before and agreed the handler in writing. The return was timed to land before the field closed for the evening.

AALBORG · THREE HOURS' NOTICE

A delegation of eight for a factory visit

Birmingham - Aalborg, Praetor 600, about 1 h 30 min · 8 pax

Because the customs office does not work round the clock, the flight from outside Schengen was notified more than three hours ahead through the slot system. The visit ended at four and the return left within the airport's published hours.

WITH THE DOG · AN APPROVED POINT

A couple, a retriever and ten days on the west coast

Biggin Hill - Billund, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 20 min · 2 pax + dog

Billund is one of the three entry points for pets, so the dog was presented there with a certificate dated inside ten days of arrival. A vet in Esbjerg gave the tapeworm treatment the day before the flight home.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER THE JAZZ WEEKS

A flexible return from Copenhagen

Copenhagen - London Gatwick, Citation CJ3+ empty leg, about 1 h 35 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of three days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £3,400, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a Monday departure.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Denmark

1How long does it take to fly to Denmark by private jet?

About 1 hour 35 minutes from London to Copenhagen, 1 hour 20 minutes to Billund, 1 hour 15 minutes to Esbjerg and 1 hour 30 minutes to Aalborg on a light jet. Denmark is one hour ahead of Britain.

2How much does a private jet to Denmark cost?

From about £8,050 one way from Biggin Hill to Copenhagen on a light jet. Billund is about £1,200 less and Esbjerg about £1,500 less on the same aircraft. Domestic hops are flown by an EU operator, with Copenhagen to Aarhus from £3,100 on a turboprop.

3Which airports do private jets use in Denmark?

Copenhagen Kastrup takes every aircraft type and is the usual gateway, with a handler to arrange in advance and approval needed for night take-offs. Roskilde is a reliever field for business and general aviation. Billund is open round the clock for Jutland, and Aarhus and Aalborg serve the east and north. Odense, Esbjerg, Sønderborg and Bornholm work to shorter published hours.

4What are the passport, customs and permit rules for a private flight from Britain to Denmark?

Denmark is in the EU and Schengen, so a flight from Britain clears passport control and customs on arrival at the airport you land at. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, and the passport must have been issued within the last ten years and run three months beyond departure. A British operator of a charter needs an EASA third-country operator authorisation and a Danish operating authorisation, and may not carry passengers between two Danish airports.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Denmark?

Yes. The animal needs an ISO microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days old and an Animal Health Certificate from an official vet issued within ten days of arrival. It must be presented at Copenhagen, Billund or Aalborg, the only entry points for pets arriving directly from Britain. Dogs need a tapeworm treatment between 24 and 120 hours before landing back in Britain, and thirteen breeds are banned in Denmark.

6How early should I book for the festival summer or a night arrival?

As early as the dates are known. Roskilde Festival at the turn of June and July, Copenhagen Jazz in July and Pride in August fill the airfields near the capital, and Billund is busy in the school holidays. A take-off from Copenhagen between 23:00 and 06:00 Danish time needs advance approval, Aalborg wants three hours' notice for a flight from outside Schengen, and the small fields close early in the evening.
