Private jet charter in Vancouver

Vancouver lies on the far side of Canada, about nine and a half hours from London westbound in a large-cabin jet, and many of our clients are really travelling for the mountains and the water behind the city. Private Jets UK arranges the charter around whichever aircraft the distance calls for. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Vancouver has one main airport on Sea Island and three private terminals that can clear customs on their own ramps, with a ring of smaller fields, helicopter pads and floatplane docks that decide the second half of the trip, so the choices are the aircraft for the crossing, the paperwork and the last leg, in that order.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Vancouver depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. On a run of more than 4,000 nautical miles the choice between a nonstop long-range cabin and a smaller jet with a fuel stop moves the price more than any other item. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from London Luton, an Embraer Praetor 600 with a stop at Gander and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Vancouver?

The nonstop flight from London to Vancouver takes about 9 h 30 min in a Gulfstream G550 from Farnborough, and a little under that from Scotland, where the northern route over Greenland and Canada is shortest. We allow a routed distance of 3,934 to 4,261 nautical miles depending on the British field, against a published range of 4,018 nautical miles for a Praetor 600, which a westbound headwind and fuel reserves cut too far, so that aircraft makes the trip in two legs with a stop at Gander in Newfoundland. Vancouver keeps Pacific time, eight hours behind Britain for most of the year (seven for a few weeks in March and at the end of October, when the clocks change on different dates), so a departure from London at nine o'clock lands at about half past ten, Vancouver time. The times below assume a headwind going west, which is the normal state of the North Atlantic and the Rockies. The table gives the sector from each British field we use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave Farnborough at nine in the morning, British time, and you touch down at Vancouver at about half past ten, Vancouver time, with the whole of the day ahead of you. The airport sits on Sea Island in Richmond, about 12 km from downtown, and by road the transfer takes 20 to 25 minutes in light traffic and 45 to 60 minutes at the weekday rush hour. The day is long in the odd way that westbound days are: the flight takes 9 h 30 min, the clocks go back eight hours, and a client who leaves after breakfast can be at a meeting downtown before the day is half over. Coming home the sums run the other way. An evening departure lands in Britain the next morning, and the winds that slowed you on the way out now help.

Nonstop or Gander: the question that decides the aircraft

– A Global or Gulfstream long-range jet flies London to Vancouver in one go and is the answer for most parties of five or more, for anyone who wants to sleep on the way, and for anyone who dislikes a ground stop in Newfoundland with the cabin door open;

– A Praetor 600 is a very good aircraft with a published range of 4,018 nautical miles, but the nonstop sector from London is 4,238 nautical miles or more and a westbound headwind takes its share. It stops at Gander, takes about an hour on the ground, then flies the second leg of 2,707 nautical miles, well inside its range. It costs noticeably less than a long-range jet and suits four to six people who do not mind the stop;

– Light jets and turboprops do not cross the Atlantic from Britain as a rule. If the trip needs a light jet or a King Air at the Vancouver end, the crossing is done by a larger aircraft and the smaller one is booked locally for the onward legs to Victoria, the Okanagan or Alberta.

Private jet flights from Vancouver

Vancouver is a good base for the Pacific Northwest. Victoria and the Okanagan are short enough for a morning, Seattle is a quarter of an hour in the air, Calgary and the Rockies are an hour and a bit, and Los Angeles is a comfortable half day. The way home is the same crossing as the way out, with the wind on the tail. Typical one-way prices:

Why the regional legs are the cheap part

A trip to Vancouver is usually priced as one long crossing and one or two short hops, and the short hops cost a fraction of the crossing. A flight from Vancouver to Victoria in a Pilatus PC-12 starts at £3,100, against £75,250 for the Atlantic leg in a Praetor 600 from London Luton, so the extra stops in British Columbia barely change the total. The sensible way to plan it is to book the large aircraft for the ocean and then ask us to quote the regional aircraft separately, since a turboprop or light jet based on the west coast will almost always beat a long-range jet kept on the apron for a four-day tour.

Before you accept a west-coast onward quote

– Which airport, and who clears it. Boundary Bay and Abbotsford are useful alternatives to the main airport, but each clears only smaller aircraft and has its own handler, so a quote that says only Vancouver has not told you where the car will wait;

– Whether the itinerary crosses the border. Vancouver to Seattle is a quarter of an hour in the air, yet it is an international flight, with the formalities of the second country to be built into the same plan, and a one-booking itinerary costs less than three separate ones because the aircraft and crew stay with you.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Turbopropsfrom £850/h
Small jet£1,700 - 2,500/h
Light jet£2,100 - 3,000/h

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Aircraft that can cross the Atlantic and then fly on to the Pacific are fewer than the ones that serve Europe, and their positions change daily, so a long-range jet already in London is often cheaper than one that has to be brought over from North America first. Equally, when the first leg is a return to Britain a day or two after our trip, we look for an aircraft that is coming this way anyway.

Business aviation airports in Vancouver

One airport takes nearly all the jets, and five smaller ones matter on the right trip. It helps to know which is which before a quote arrives.

Airport What it gives you
Vancouver International, Richmond
YVR / CYVR
The answer for nearly every trip. It stands on Sea Island, about 12 km from downtown, with three runways, of 2,225 m, 3,030 m and more than 3,500 m, so there is nothing a charter will send that it cannot take. Private aircraft use three FBOs: Signature Flight Support, Million Air Vancouver and Skyservice. Customs and immigration are on site, and the three FBOs can clear arriving aircraft on their own ramps. The airport is open round the clock, though the night rules below apply
Boundary Bay
YDT / CZBB
A small airport about 16 km south-south-east of Vancouver, with runways of 1,833 m and 1,708 m. Border officers are on call for aircraft with up to 15 passengers. It suits light and midsize jets heading for the south of the city or Delta, and keeps a client out of the main airport traffic. The big long-range cabin belongs at Vancouver International
Abbotsford International
YXX / CYXX
About 65 km from downtown in the Fraser Valley, with a main runway of 2,925 m and a second of 1,624 m, so size is no problem. The border service clears general aviation aircraft with up to 15 passengers, and the FBO is Abbotsford Shell Aerocentre. A realistic alternative when the party is bound for the Fraser Valley or the eastern suburbs, or when Vancouver is congested, but the road into the city is long
Victoria International
YYJ / CYYJ
On Vancouver Island, 22 km north-north-west of Victoria, with a main runway of 2,133 m. It is an airport of entry with border officers, who can process up to 120 passengers at a time, and the FBO is Shell Aerocentre. There is no United States customs here. A natural first or last stop for a trip that continues to the island, and an easy hop from the mainland by turboprop or helicopter
Kelowna International
YLW / CYLW
The airport of the Okanagan wine country, 11.5 km north-east of Kelowna, with a single runway of 2,755 m. Its terminal can cordon off a baggage carousel for international arrivals and Canadian customs, and the road from the coast is long, which is why a client heading for the lakes flies on from Vancouver by a smaller aircraft rather than driving
Gander
YQX / CYQX
Not a Vancouver airport at all but the usual fuel stop on the way out. Two long runways of about 3,100 m and 2,700 m, Canadian customs and immigration available around the clock, Jet A-1 from hydrant refuelling and a crew lounge. Handling is by Allied Aviation, and there are hotels within 2 km. We plan a turn of about an hour

Four points settle most Vancouver arrivals:

Choose the terminal

Vancouver has three business aviation bases on the same airport: Signature, Million Air and Skyservice. Their ramps, lounges and fees differ, so we put your preference or the operator's in writing. A driver told only Vancouver airport may wait at the wrong door, so the terminal name goes on the transfer order too.

Hours and night rules

The airport is open round the clock, but the north runway is closed from 22:00 to 07:00, and between midnight and 06:00 a jet departure above 34,000 kg needs prior approval, which is generally given for flights carrying passengers and generally refused for repositioning flights. A large-cabin jet is therefore planned to leave in the day, and Million Air lists terminal hours of 03:30 to midnight.

Border and passport

British citizens need an eTA and a valid passport to board a flight to Canada. Border officers clear the passengers at the private terminal, and the arrangements are made by us and the handler before departure. Details are in the border section below.

Car and late nights

The Canada Line train to downtown takes about 25 minutes, but a private party takes a car from the terminal, which we book with the handler so the driver is waiting at the right door. A weekday arrival at rush hour can double the drive, so we choose the landing time with the traffic in mind.

business aviation

Border, passport and Canadian customs

Canada is not in the Schengen area or any shared travel zone with Britain, so every passenger is cleared by the Canada Border Services Agency on arrival. British citizens need an electronic travel authorisation, the eTA, and a valid passport to board a flight to Canada. The eTA costs CAN$7, about £4, is applied for online and is usually approved within minutes. It is not needed by a dual British and Canadian citizen travelling on a Canadian passport. The normal visit is up to six months, and the passport has to be valid for the length of the stay. Flight crew are exempt from the eTA. Apply well before the day, because a few cases are not approved at once.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

For the aircraft there is a separate set of steps, and the operator and our handler carry them out. For a private or charter aircraft with no more than 15 people aboard, including crew, the pilot reports to the border telephone centre at least two hours and no more than 48 hours before flying into Canada, giving the arrival time, the registration, the Canadian destination and the name, date of birth and citizenship of everyone aboard. After landing the pilot calls again, and nobody leaves the aircraft until the officer authorises it. With more than 15 people the pilot contacts the border office at the planned airport of entry in advance. The aircraft has to land at an approved airport of entry during the border service's business hours, otherwise cost recovery charges apply. Everyone must declare goods, and cash of CAN$10,000 or more has to be reported.

One useful fact for choosing the airport: Vancouver, Victoria, Abbotsford and Boundary Bay all have a border presence, but with different hours and different limits on party size. Abbotsford and Boundary Bay take general aviation aircraft with up to 15 passengers, and Victoria is set up for a normal jet load. At Vancouver the three FBOs can clear arriving private aircraft on their own ramps, so the passengers do not have to taxi to a separate customs area. If the arrival is late at night, the airport is often chosen for its customs hours rather than its distance from the hotel.

The way home has its own formalities. Britons and Irish citizens need no permission to enter the United Kingdom, while most other visa-free visitors need a UK electronic travel authorisation. For the aircraft, a General Aviation Report is filed with the UK authorities no earlier than 48 hours and no later than two hours before departure. The penalties for getting it wrong are real: a fine of £2,500 for a first landing at an aerodrome that is not a regulated one, and £2,000 for each passenger carried without permission. The operator and handler file the report, and we check that it is done.

From the apron to the mountains

Vancouver is a city you reach in under half an hour from its airport and then leave quickly, because the water and the mountains are the point. The main airport sits on an island south of downtown, the harbour is on the other side of the city, and the distances that matter on a business trip are the ones to the downtown core, to Whistler and to Victoria.

Vancouver airport to downtown
about 12 km from the city centre; by road 20 to 25 minutes in light traffic and 45 to 60 minutes at weekday rush hours
depends on traffic
Vancouver airport to downtown by Canada Line
a SkyTrain line from the airport to the city, useful for a traveller without much luggage
about 25 minutes
Boundary Bay to Vancouver
about 16 km south-south-east of the city, a short run to the south side and the Delta shoreline
by road
Abbotsford to downtown Vancouver
about 65 km east along the Fraser Valley, which is why it is chosen for the valley and not for the city
by road
Vancouver to Whistler
about 125 km north on the Sea to Sky Highway, the road that feeds the ski resort
by road, or by helicopter in 35 to 40 minutes
Victoria airport to Victoria
22 km north-north-west of the city, and the first stop for a trip to the island
by road

Flying to Vancouver with a dog or a cat

Canada asks for less paperwork on the way in than the European Union does, and more on the way home. The animal sits with you in the cabin, and the flight is long enough that most dogs sleep through the greater part of it. What matters is the timing of three documents: the UK export certificate before you leave, the rabies record, and the certificate for the return to Britain, which has a short life.

private flight with animals

What the two countries ask for:

  • An export health certificate for dogs and cats going from the United Kingdom to Canada (form 2923EHC), signed by an Official Veterinarian after a clinical examination within 72 hours of export;
  • For an animal between 3 and 8 months old travelling with its owner, a rabies certificate meeting Canadian requirements, showing the dates, vaccine, supplier, batch number and expiry. An animal over 8 months needs either a rabies vaccination certificate or a declaration of residency. A puppy under 3 months cannot be vaccinated against rabies;
  • Inspection fees are payable at the first Canadian port of entry, and we agree the arrival point with the handler beforehand;
  • For the return to Britain, Canada is a "part 2" listed country: a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel, with a pet passport or animal health certificate not accepted. The rabies vaccination must be at least 21 days old, and no blood test is required;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before the return flight to Britain. Cats are exempt. No more than five animals per traveller.

What catches owners out on the Vancouver run

– The return certificate has to be dated inside ten days of travel, so a two-week stay means a vet appointment in British Columbia, and the tapeworm treatment must fall in its own window of 24 to 120 hours before landing. Book both before you leave Britain;

– A long crossing is a long day for an animal. Plan a walk before departure, and if you use a Gander stop, ask the handler whether the animal may leave the aircraft there;

– Plan the second leg for the animal as well. A helicopter operator to Whistler, a floatplane and a hotel each accept animals on their own terms, so they are asked separately and in advance.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide, and our managers confirm the position in writing for your dates before a booking is taken. We also confirm in writing the entry point and the paperwork for the animal on the way back into Britain.

The Vancouver calendar: a ski season, a fair and a film festival

Vancouver's rhythm is set by the mountains as much as the events. Winter belongs to Whistler, the late summer to the fair and the airshow, and the autumn to the film festival. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

April
The Vancouver Sun Run, a 10 km road race on the third Sunday of April, brings tens of thousands of runners into the downtown streets for the day. The weekend is busy for hotels and for road transfers, so cars and early flights are booked ahead
August
The Abbotsford International Airshow, usually in the second weekend of August, brings aircraft enthusiasts and guests to the Fraser Valley. The roads out to the valley are slow and the airport is busy that weekend, so ask us early if your plans touch it
Mid-August to early September
The summer fair of the Pacific National Exhibition, at Hastings Park, runs for about two weeks and ends on Labour Day. It is the long weekend that closes the summer, and demand for flights to the islands and the mountains peaks with it
Late September to early October
The Vancouver International Film Festival, held over about two weeks. Industry delegations come in on short notice, and the terminals and good cars tighten for the opening days
December
The Whistler Film Festival runs for five days from the first weekend of December, at the start of the ski season. Snow falls at Whistler from October to May and is heaviest in December and January, which matters for any helicopter transfer
October to April
The Canucks play at home through the hockey season, and winter weekends at Whistler are the other draw. Allow generous time on the ground in snow, and avoid tight connections between a long-range jet and a helicopter

Why a ski weekend or a fair week costs more

Not the flying. The long-range fleet that can cross the Atlantic and reach the Pacific is much smaller than the Europe-only fleet, and the aircraft that suit Vancouver are wanted on the same days from the United States and Asia. What gets tight is terminal space, the good cars, helicopter seats to Whistler and the crew duty hours. A booking made a fortnight before the busiest weekend can still be done, but it pays more and may mean an aircraft brought across the ocean empty. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the peaks a crossing can usually be arranged within a few days.

Ways to bring the Vancouver price down

  • Choose the aircraft for the crossing and not for the fantasy. A Praetor 600 with a stop at Gander costs less than a long-range jet and takes about three hours longer door to door; for four people that is a fair trade;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A long-range jet coming from London needs less positioning than one coming from Dubai or the west coast, and on a transatlantic sector positioning is a large share of the bill;
  • Be flexible by a day or two. A flight that avoids the busiest ski weekends and the fair is easier to price, and a return that fits an empty leg is cheaper than a fresh charter.

Types of flights

Vancouver produces a different mix from the European destinations we cover, because it is a Pacific port, a business centre and a mountain playground in one.

  • Corporate and resource travel, tied to the head offices, resource companies and technology firms of the coast, where the dates are set by a meeting and the cabin by the size of the delegation;
  • Film and entertainment travel, which peaks around the film festivals in autumn and winter and has its own demands for privacy and for a terminal that can keep an arrival discreet;
  • Ski and mountain trips, a jet to Vancouver and a helicopter to Whistler, or a flight on to the interior and the Rockies;
  • Transatlantic family and leisure trips, often combined with Vancouver Island, the Okanagan or a longer tour of western Canada;
  • Onward journeys to the United States, particularly Seattle and California, using Vancouver as the port of entry and a light jet from there.

The one-way and return question is worth a closer look. On a crossing of this length a same-week return is usually priced as two separate sectors, plus the crew's rest and hotel in Vancouver, so we quote both options. Where the stay is short, leaving the aircraft in Vancouver and returning on the fourth day is often better value than flying home empty and coming back, and where the stay is a week or more, two one-way flights are cleaner than waiting.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. On the Vancouver route they come from the pattern of events rather than from sheer volume, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Vancouver empty legs come from

– Ski and festival weeks. Aircraft arrive full for a Whistler weekend or the film festival and leave empty a day or two later, so the eastbound sector and the sectors to the United States both appear in the days after;

– Transatlantic positioning. A long-range jet that has taken a party from London to Vancouver often has to return, and that empty crossing is the one most worth looking for;

– West-coast rotation. Aircraft based on the Pacific coast move between Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary and California, and the short legs between them can be cheap.

Because the long-range fleet is small, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Vancouver match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter and seaplane charter

In Vancouver a helicopter or a floatplane is not a luxury at the edge of the trip but often the quickest way to the other half of it. Whistler is about 125 km up a mountain highway and Victoria is across the Strait of Georgia, and both distances are short enough that the air is the sensible choice. Pemberton, further up the valley, has a runway of about 1,200 m that is not always ploughed in winter, so it is no answer for a jet.

Before you plan around a helicopter or seaplane

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A hotel lawn or a private property needs its landing status and the owner's consent confirmed before the quote, and Helijet notes that a destination that is not an airport or heliport can need up to 60 days' lead time for permits;

– Weather sets the schedule. Low cloud on the Sea to Sky corridor, snow and ice can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands without trouble, so a Whistler transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– Seats and baggage are limited on the smaller machines, so skis, golf bags and a large party are quoted early, and in the peak ski weekends a helicopter is booked together with the jet or not at all.

The machines used on this ground range from the Airbus H125 for scenic and mountain work to the twin-engine Sikorsky S-76 used by Helijet for the water crossings, and the H135 and Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Vancouver charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

NONSTOP · THE LONG-RANGE CABIN

Six people, one long stretch of the Atlantic

Farnborough - Vancouver, Gulfstream G550, about 9 h 30 min · 6 pax

A company team heading for a week of meetings on the coast, leaving mid-morning and landing before lunch, Vancouver time. The reason for the larger cabin was less the seats than the luggage and the wish to work in the air without a stop. They went into a private terminal at the main airport, were cleared there by the border officers, and found the car at the door.

GANDER STOP · THE SENSIBLE COMPROMISE

Four people, a Praetor and an hour in Newfoundland

London Luton - Vancouver, Embraer Praetor 600, about 11 h 45 min plus a stop · 4 pax

A smaller party that wanted to keep the budget down. A Praetor 600 cannot do the whole run in one go with a westbound headwind, so the quote included the stop at Gander, a turn of about an hour with fuel and a leg stretch. The saving over a long-range jet was real, and nobody complained about the hour.

SKI WEEK · A JET AND A HELICOPTER

A family for the first week of the season

Farnborough - Vancouver, Gulfstream G550, about 9 h 30 min · 7 pax + helicopter

Seven people with skis and a lot of luggage. The jet landed at Vancouver, and a helicopter took them from the airport to the Whistler heliport in about 40 minutes, a road trip they would otherwise have made behind the weekend traffic. The helicopter was booked together with the aircraft, as the seats are scarce at the start of a season.

THE ISLAND · A TURBOPROP HOP

A day and a night on Vancouver Island

Vancouver - Victoria, Pilatus PC-12 NGX, about 20 minutes in the air · 5 pax

After three days of meetings downtown, a short onward flight on a Pilatus PC-12 from the main airport to Victoria airport, where a car met them at the Shell Aerocentre. A floatplane from the downtown harbour to the Inner Harbour was the alternative, but the luggage was already at the airport.

A DOG ON BOARD · TWO CERTIFICATES

Three adults and a labrador for a ten-day stay

Edinburgh - Vancouver, Gulfstream G550, about 8 h 50 min · 3 pax + dog

The UK export certificate was signed after an examination inside 72 hours of departure, and the Great Britain pet health certificate for the way home had to be dated inside ten days of the return flight. The tapeworm treatment fell between 24 and 120 hours before landing. We booked the two vet appointments with the aircraft, and the whole thing was settled in one exchange of messages.

EMPTY LEG · THE WAY HOME

A jet already going your way

Vancouver - London Stansted, Gulfstream G550 empty leg, about 8 h 00 min · 4 pax

The aircraft had brought a party over for a long weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for an evening departure that landed in Britain the next morning.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Vancouver

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Vancouver?

About 9 h 30 min nonstop in a Gulfstream G550 from Farnborough, and a little less from Edinburgh or Glasgow. A Praetor 600 needs a stop at Gander and takes about 11 h 45 min in the air from Luton, plus an hour on the ground. The routed distance for the nonstop fields is 3,934 to 4,261 nautical miles. Vancouver is eight hours behind Britain for most of the year, and seven for a few weeks around the clock changes, so a departure at nine in the morning lands at about half past ten, local time.

2How much does a private jet to Vancouver cost?

From about £75,250 one way for a Praetor 600 from London Luton with a stop at Gander. A nonstop long-range jet starts from about £121,150 from Farnborough in a Gulfstream G550, and from £113,250 from Edinburgh. Ski weekends at Whistler and the summer fair weeks price above these figures.

3Which Vancouver airport should a private jet use?

Vancouver International (YVR / CYVR) for nearly every trip. It is on Sea Island, about 12 km from downtown, with three business aviation FBOs (Signature, Million Air and Skyservice) and customs on site. Boundary Bay and Abbotsford clear smaller aircraft with up to 15 passengers, and Victoria is the airport for Vancouver Island.

4Do I need a visa or an eTA to fly to Canada?

British citizens need no visa for a visit of up to six months but do need an electronic travel authorisation, the eTA, and a valid passport to board a flight to Canada. It costs CAN$7, about £4, and is usually approved within minutes. A dual British and Canadian citizen travels on a Canadian passport and does not need an eTA. Flight crew are exempt.

5Can I fly on from Vancouver to Whistler, Victoria or Seattle?

Yes, and a smaller aircraft or a helicopter is the usual choice for the second leg. Whistler is about 125 km up the Sea to Sky Highway, and a helicopter from the airport takes about 40 minutes. Victoria is 36 nautical miles away and a Pilatus PC-12 starts from £3,100. Seattle Boeing Field is 110 nautical miles, from £5,300 in a Citation CJ3+. We book the crossing and the regional legs together.

6Can I take my dog to Vancouver on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you. Going out you need a UK export health certificate signed by an Official Veterinarian after an examination within 72 hours of export, and a rabies record that meets Canadian requirements. For the return, Canada is a part 2 country, so a Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before travel is needed, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before landing.
