Private jet charter in Georgia

Georgia lies where the Black Sea meets the main Caucasus ridge, and from London that means roughly two thousand nautical miles, a distance that settles the type of aircraft before anything else is discussed. We mean the country in the Caucasus, with Tbilisi as its capital, and the booking runs differently from a trip to Europe: a landing permit has to be filed with the Georgian civil aviation authority, light jets fuel in Istanbul, and the airports on the coast and in the west are as useful as the capital's. Private Jets UK plans each Georgian charter around those points. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. In Georgia that service continues on the ground, because the places people come for - a wine cellar in Kakheti, a ski slope above 2,000 metres, a mountain church under Kazbek - are rarely close to a runway.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Georgia depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, an Embraer Phenom 300E with a fuel stop in Istanbul to Tbilisi and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Georgia?

Georgia runs on a single clock all year, four hours ahead of Britain in winter and three hours ahead in British summer, so a morning departure lands in the evening on local time. These are the sectors from British airfields to Tbilisi, gate to gate, with the stop counted where a light jet needs one:

Biggin Hill, Phenom 300E
two legs through Istanbul, about 2,134 nautical miles in all, with roughly an hour on the ground
about 6 h 35 min
Biggin Hill, Praetor 600
nonstop, about 1,988 nautical miles with the routing allowance
about 4 h 55 min
Manchester, Praetor 600
nonstop, 2,077 nautical miles
about 5 h 05 min
Glasgow, Challenger 350
nonstop, 2,160 nautical miles, among the longest of the regular British departures
about 5 h 20 min
Tbilisi airport to the city
the airport is about 17 km south-east of the centre by the aerodrome publication; allow around half an hour by road outside the rush hour
about 30 min

What the clock says on arrival

Leave Manchester at eight in the morning in a Praetor 600 and the wheels touch down in Tbilisi a little after five in the evening on the winter clock, a little after four in British summer. A seven o'clock departure from Luton in a Phenom 300E with the stop in Istanbul takes 6 h 40 min and lands after half past five in winter. Either way the first evening belongs to dinner, not to meetings.

A same-day return is out of the question. The flying alone takes ten hours or more, and the crew's duty limits close the door before the schedule does. Plan on two nights as the shortest sensible stay.

Range check: what flies nonstop and what stops

– Light jets stop. The Phenom 300E and the Learjet 75 are listed at about 2,000 nautical miles, and Biggin Hill is about 1,988 nautical miles from Tbilisi even before a headwind or an alternate is counted. The usual split is Istanbul, with a first leg of about 1,376 nautical miles and a second of about 758;

– The super-midsize class flies it in one leg. The Praetor 600 lists a range near 4,000 nautical miles and the Challenger 350 near 3,200, which leaves room for weather, an alternate and a full cabin;

– The coast and the west are closer. Batumi is about 1,859 nautical miles from Biggin Hill and Kutaisi about 1,874, against 1,988 for Tbilisi, and the Phenom quote with the stop in Istanbul drops from £26,500 to £24,700 for Batumi and £25,150 for Kutaisi.

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

Two things worth knowing about these figures

– A quote that looks cheap is usually the light jet with the stop. Moving the departure from Biggin Hill to Luton adds £250 on the same Phenom, while moving from the Phenom to a Praetor 600 adds about £5,900 and takes the stop away. Ask which aircraft sits behind a figure before you compare two offers;

– The Georgian end adds its own lines. The landing permit, the ground handler and the airport charges appear separately in our offer, and the choice of airport changes the base price: the same Phenom from Biggin Hill costs about £1,800 less to Batumi and about £1,350 less to Kutaisi than to Tbilisi, so a client bound for the coast or the west should not default to the capital.

Private jet flights within Georgia and to its neighbours

Georgia is a country of short hops and long drives. A client who lands at Tbilisi and wants to be in Batumi by lunch can do it in under an hour in the air, where the road takes most of a day. The sectors we are asked for are those internal links, the crossings into Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the longer trips that use Tbilisi as a base for Istanbul, the Mediterranean or the Gulf:

Two things worth knowing about these sectors

– Plan on a separate permission for flying between Georgian airports. The aeronautical publication requires the first landing and the last departure to be at an international airport, and we treat every leg between two Georgian points as its own movement. We name the operator who flies it when we quote, and for a short hop the turboprop is often the better tool than a jet that has to be positioned;

– Some of the map is closed to us. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia and against all but essential travel to the areas next to their administrative boundary lines, so Sukhumi and the other airfields in those territories are not options, and itineraries are drawn well away from them. Yerevan, Baku, Istanbul, Larnaca, Athens and Dubai are the longer sectors that clients combine with Georgia, and each has its own entry rules for the passengers, which we confirm before the offer.

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Georgia:

Light jets, with the Istanbul stop

The economical way in and the slowest: about six and a half hours door to door, with an hour on the ground in Istanbul. It fits one to four people who would rather save money than time.

Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h
Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h

Midsize

The class where range is tight. The Citation Latitude is listed at about 2,700 nautical miles, which Tbilisi uses up quickly once the cabin is full, so we quote it with the stop and the nonstop option side by side.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h

Super-midsize and large

The aircraft that reach Tbilisi in one leg, and the ones we price first for a delegation, a family or a group that wants to step off rested and go straight to a dinner.

Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Heavy and ultra-long range

For ten or more passengers, or when Georgia is one stop on a longer route to Central Asia or the Gulf. The main runway at Tbilisi is 3,000 metres, so length does not limit any type.

Dassault Falcon 900LX · 12 seatsfrom £5,400/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom £6,400/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom £6,700/h
Gulfstream G650ER · 14 seatsfrom £7,700/h

Turboprops

The aircraft for internal hops such as Kutaisi, Batumi or the smaller airfields of the provinces. Not for the journey from Britain, which at turboprop speed is a day of flying with two or three stops.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Business aviation airports in Georgia

Georgia has three airports that matter to a jet from Britain, a pair of small airfields that matter to the mountains, and a long list of fields that matter to nobody outside the country. Tbilisi takes the capital, Batumi the sea and Kutaisi the west:

Airport Ground How it operates
Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli
TBS / UGTB
about 17 km south-east of the city, 481 m above sea level, run by TAV Urban Georgia The gateway for the capital and for most of the country. The usable runway is 13R/31L, 3,000 by 45 metres, with ILS category I on 31L, and a second runway is closed to take-offs and landings. The aerodrome, customs and immigration, health control, fuelling, handling and de-icing are all listed as open round the clock, and Jet A-1 and TS-1 are supplied by several companies. The former first terminal works as a VIP lounge, and a local handler, VIP Aviation Handling Co., lists round-the-clock ramp handling, lounge support and permits. Hangar space is listed through a maintenance company and is aimed mainly at airliner types, so shelter for a visiting business jet is agreed in advance
Batumi
BUS / UGSB
about 5 km south-west of the city, 11 m above sea level, run by Batumi Airport Ltd The Black Sea gateway. A runway of 2,500 by 45 metres, 12/30, with a localizer and glide path on 12. Customs, immigration, health control, fuelling and handling are listed round the clock. Fuel is TS-1, equivalent to Jet A-1. Visiting general aviation aircraft are directed by marshallers to a small-aircraft parking area, and there is no hangar space for visitors. The nearest sensible airport for the coast, Adjara and, by road, the Goderdzi ski area
Kutaisi David the Builder
KUT / UGKO
about 21 km south-west of Kutaisi, 49 m above sea level, run by United Airports of Georgia The airport for the west. A runway of 2,500 by 45 metres, 07/25, with ILS category I at both ends. Customs, immigration, health control, fuelling and handling are listed round the clock, although the aerodrome operator itself keeps office hours on weekdays and publishes a round-the-clock operations line. Jet A-1 and TS-1 come from one supplier with three trucks. No hangar and no repair for visitors. Swallows cross the approach to runway 07 in the morning and late afternoon from June to September
Natakhtari
UGSA
about 8 km from Mtskheta, north of Tbilisi A small airfield with a runway of 948 by 18 metres, daytime visual flying only, no air traffic service, and no customs or immigration. It serves small domestic aircraft and the shuttle to Mestia, and an international arrival must clear at Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi first. A hangar for visiting aircraft and fuel on request are listed
Mestia Queen Tamar
UGMS
in the Svaneti valley, about 1,450 m above sea level A mountain airfield with a runway of about 1,160 metres, served by a small turboprop on domestic schedules from Kutaisi and Natakhtari. Used for the ski season and the trips to Ushguli. Not a place for a business jet, and arrivals from Britain clear at one of the three international airports first

Four rules settle most Georgian arrivals before a quote goes out:

The permit: five working days

The aeronautical publication asks the operator of a non-scheduled flight that lands in Georgia to apply to the Civil Aviation Agency at least five working days ahead. A permit number is issued for each request and is valid for 24 hours from the date in the application. A flight that only crosses the airspace needs no permission.

The papers: three copies

A general declaration, a passenger manifest and, where there is cargo, a cargo manifest go to customs, immigration and the sanitary-quarantine officer, in the ICAO format and in English. The application also names the aircraft, the crew, the schedule in UTC and the insurance.

The handler: one company, three airports

VIP Aviation Handling Co. lists coverage of Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi, a round-the-clock desk, landing and overflight permits, lounge support and fuel. We name the handler in the offer, and urgent requests are put to it rather than waited out.

Parking: ask before you land

The published data show apron stands at all three airports, a hangar at Tbilisi offered through a maintenance company mainly for airliner types, and no hangar for visitors at Batumi or Kutaisi, so a stay of several days is agreed in advance. A visiting aircraft may be asked to drop the passengers and position to another field.

Tbilisi has one usable runway, so the alternate is part of the plan

With the second runway closed, a blocked 13R/31L leaves Tbilisi without a runway. The realistic alternates are Yerevan, 99 nautical miles to the south, Kutaisi, 119 nautical miles to the west, and Baku, 251 nautical miles to the east. Each carries its own entry formalities, so the crew and the handler agree on one before the aircraft leaves Britain.

Arriving from Britain: passports, customs and what to carry

Georgia is outside the European Union and Schengen, so a flight from London lands as an ordinary international arrival. The formalities run through the passenger terminal or the VIP lounge, and the handler walks the party through them.

Passports and visas
British citizens may visit Georgia without a visa for up to one year, and the passport should be valid for the whole stay; entry is refused to anyone with a passport reported lost or stolen
every passenger, children included
Health insurance
the Foreign Office states that visitors need health and accident insurance with cover of at least 30,000 lari for the full stay
arrange before departure
Goods and allowances
arriving by air, non-food goods up to 3,000 lari and 30 kg per calendar day and food up to 500 lari and 30 kg are exempt from duty; alcohol allowances are 1 litre of spirits, 2 litres of drinks under 22 percent, 4 litres of wine and 16 litres of beer
declare anything above
Cash
cash, cheques or securities worth more than 30,000 lari, or the equivalent in another currency, must be declared
declare when in doubt
Medicines
Georgia applies a strict policy to medicines: non-prescription codeine products are illegal, and prescription medicines need a doctor's prescription and the original packaging
carry the prescription

Aircraft paperwork, the way home and the Foreign Office map

The aircraft brings its own file. The general declaration, the passenger manifest and any cargo manifest are submitted in one copy each for customs, immigration and the sanitary-quarantine officer, in the ICAO format and in English, and a flight that carries nobody and nothing in or out needs only the general declaration. Operators must also hold third-party liability insurance in line with the aircraft's weight, and the application states it. We confirm the routing, the handler and the permit in writing before the flight.

Coming home is a flight into Britain. A General Aviation Report goes to the border authorities not earlier than 48 hours and not later than two hours before departure, and British and Irish citizens need no electronic travel authorisation while most other nationalities do. On the Georgian side the Foreign Office advises against all travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia, advises against all but essential travel to the areas immediately next to their administrative boundary lines, and warns that travel insurance can be invalidated if you travel against its advice. We draw every itinerary away from those areas, and we suggest you check the Foreign Office map for the date of travel.

Which airport for which part of Georgia

The country is about the size of Ireland, and three airports cover it. The question is which one saves the longest drive, and for some places the honest answer is a helicopter:

Tbilisi and Mtskheta
the capital, its Old Town and the ancient capital of Mtskheta, whose Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are on the UNESCO list
Tbilisi
Kakheti and the wine country
Telavi, Sighnaghi and the Alazani valley; Sighnaghi is about an hour and a half from Tbilisi by a private transfer, and Telavi two to two and a half hours by taxi over the Gombori pass
Tbilisi, then road or helicopter
Gudauri and Kazbegi
Gudauri is about 120 km north of Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway, two to three hours by car, and the Gergeti Trinity Church under Kazbek lies beyond the Jvari pass
Tbilisi, then road or helicopter
Kutaisi and Imereti
the western city with the Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, both on the UNESCO list
Kutaisi
Batumi and Adjara
the Black Sea resort with its seven-kilometre pebble beach and boulevard, and the road up to Goderdzi in three to four hours
Batumi
Bakuriani and Borjomi
the ski resort is about 180 km from Tbilisi and 150 km from Kutaisi, each under four hours by car, with Borjomi as the gateway
Tbilisi or Kutaisi, then road
Svaneti, Mestia and Ushguli
450 km and about ten hours by road from Tbilisi, 230 km from Kutaisi; Ushguli is on the UNESCO list and the ski areas of Hatsvali and Tetnuldi lie near Mestia
Kutaisi, then helicopter or the Mestia shuttle

Tbilisi, the wine country and the mountains: what our clients go for

Tbilisi holds nearly a third of the country's population, about 1.4 million people, in a bowl-shaped valley between 380 and 770 metres above the sea. The Old Town is compact enough to cover on foot: the Narikala fortress above it, the Sioni Cathedral, the Metekhi church, the Sameba Cathedral across the river, the Bridge of Peace and the sulphur baths of Abanotubani, which give the city its name by tradition.

Business is the first reason to come. Delegations, investors and the lawyers who follow them set the pattern: arrive in the evening, meet through the next day, fly out on the second night.

Wine is the second. Georgia counts more than five hundred grape varieties and makes wine in clay vessels called qvevri, and most commercial producers sit in Kakheti, in the Alazani valley east of the capital. A private group usually flies in on a Thursday, spends two nights in a guesthouse among the vines and leaves on the Sunday.

The mountains are the third. Gudauri has lifts up to about 3,300 metres, heli-skiing and paragliding, and the season runs from December into April. Bakuriani, Tetnuldi near Mestia and Goderdzi give other slopes. In summer the same valleys turn to hiking, with Kazbegi National Park among the most visited protected areas, and Ushguli in Upper Svaneti, a UNESCO village, is a long day from anywhere.

The coast is the fourth. Batumi has a boulevard of sculptures and glass towers, a botanical garden to the north of the centre and a winter that rarely turns cold. For a private client it works as a summer base, and it is the cheapest of the three international gateways to reach from Britain.

The Georgian year: ski season, harvest and the Black Sea summer

Georgia has no single flying season. Tbilisi works all year, while the places around it follow the weather:

December to April
the ski season at Gudauri, with the upper slopes sometimes open into April; Bakuriani, Mestia and Goderdzi usually close around late March; January is the coldest month in Tbilisi, averaging about 3 degrees
ski and city breaks
April and May
the shoulder, when the boulevard and the botanical garden in Batumi are at their best and the ski season is over
spring
June to August
July is the hottest month in Tbilisi, with daytime highs averaging about 31 degrees; the Black Sea coast is the main destination, and the mountains turn to hiking
sea and altitude
September and October
the grape harvest, Rtveli, falls in late September in the east and in mid-October in the west; the Gandagana festival in Adjara comes in late September or early October; Tbilisoba fills the second half of October
wine season

A hot day is a payload question

Tbilisi stands at 481 m, so the field is not high, but the afternoons of July and August are warm enough to trim the useful load of a light jet leaving for the stop in Istanbul. From Biggin Hill the Phenom 300E quote is £26,500 one way, and the Praetor 600 from the same airfield £32,400.

The Georgian calendar: snow, grapes and sea

The dated events are few, and each one pulls on a different part of the country:

December to April
The ski season at Gudauri, a two to three hour drive from Tbilisi, with heli-skiing available through the season on terrain from about 1,500 to 4,200 metres
Summer
The Black Sea season in Batumi, opened by the Summer Festival and followed by the Black Sea Jazz Festival, whose dates move from year to year
Late September
Rtveli, the grape harvest, begins in the east of the country, where Kakheti lies, with feasts and folk singing at the end of each working day
Late September to early October
The Gandagana festival in Adjara, a celebration of rural tourism, Ajarian food and wine
Mid-October
Rtveli reaches the west of the country, usually a few weeks after the east
Second half of October
Tbilisoba, the city festival, with open-air concerts, dance, cultural events in the Old Town and harvest fairs where the regions present their produce

What a Georgian event does to a flight plan

– The peaks are short, and Tbilisi has one usable runway. The harvest weekends and the October festival bring family visits and tour groups, and the lounge and the apron fill up. A request sent as soon as the dates are known gives the permit, the parking and the handler time to line up;

– Ski weekends at Gudauri depend on snow and road conditions, so we keep the helicopter and the car as alternatives and book the one the weather allows.

Flying to Georgia with a dog or a cat

A dog or cat travels in the cabin, and the paperwork comes in two halves of very different weight: a light one for Georgia and a heavy one for the way home. Georgia appears on neither of Britain's lists of countries for pet entry, and that is the fact to read before you book.

The one fact to read before you book

Georgia admits dogs and cats that arrive by air with an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination and a veterinary certificate, and the pets are inspected on arrival by the National Food Agency. A personal pet that travels with its owner needs no import permit. The published guides disagree on details such as the age of the vaccination (21 or 30 days) and the age of the certificate (five or ten days), so we plan to the stricter version: a vaccination at least 30 days old and not more than a year, and a certificate dated within five days of travel. Both guides name Tbilisi as the airport of arrival, and one adds Kutaisi.

Coming home is where the planning is. Because Georgia is not a listed country, a dog or cat returning to Great Britain needs a rabies antibody blood test taken at least 30 days after the vaccination, with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an approved laboratory, and a wait of three months from the date of the sample before travel. A Great Britain pet health certificate issued in the ten days before arrival is also required, and a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet no less than 24 and no more than 120 hours before landing. An animal without the right paperwork can be held in quarantine for up to four months. In practice the blood test is done in Britain, months before the trip.

  • An ISO-standard microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, at least 30 days before arrival in Georgia and kept in date;
  • A veterinary health certificate from an official vet, issued no more than five days before travel; dogs and cats are also expected to be up to date with the core vaccines, which one guide lists for the 11 months before entry;
  • For the way home, the blood test and three-month wait described above, a Great Britain pet health certificate dated within ten days of arrival and, for a dog, the tapeworm treatment;
  • A pet that travels without its owner needs an import permit and is handled as a consignment.

Cats need the same list without the worming. Georgia itself asks for no tapeworm treatment on the way in, and a local guide notes that an export veterinary certificate from the National Food Agency may be needed when an animal leaves the country, so we check that point with the handler as well. We confirm in writing that the animal will be presented at the airport of arrival, and we check the dates of the blood test with your own vet before the aircraft is booked.

Requirements for birds, rabbits and the less usual species, along with the countries where the timeline runs to months, are set out on our flying with pets guide.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. A journey of this length is one-way by nature for many clients, which is why Georgia produces more of them than its size suggests.

Where Georgian empty legs come from

– Light jets that brought clients to Tbilisi with a stop in Istanbul and fly home empty, the cheapest kind because the aircraft is small;

– The weekends that fill the apron, from the harvest in late September and the Tbilisoba festival in October to the ski season at Gudauri, when aircraft arrive full and leave empty a day or two later;

– Business delegations that go out with a full cabin and return with a few seats, or none, once the meetings are over.

A client who can offer a few days has a far better chance of a match, though the operator owns the date and a leg can disappear when the original booking changes. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page. A selection of Georgian empty legs follows:

Route Aircraft Capacity Whole aircraft
Georgia (Tbilisi) - UK (London Biggin Hill)
one stop in Istanbul
Phenom 300E 8 seats £11,150
UK (London City) - Georgia (Tbilisi)
one stop in Istanbul
Phenom 300E 8 seats £11,150
Georgia (Tbilisi) - UK (London Luton)
one stop in Istanbul
Phenom 300E 8 seats £11,250
UK (Farnborough) - Georgia (Tbilisi)
one stop in Istanbul
Learjet 75 Liberty 8 seats £13,550
UK (Birmingham) - Georgia (Tbilisi)
nonstop
Praetor 600 9 seats £14,050
Georgia (Tbilisi) - UK (Manchester)
nonstop
Praetor 600 9 seats £14,200
Georgia (Tbilisi) - UK (Bristol)
nonstop
Challenger 350 9 seats £16,800
UK (Edinburgh) - Georgia (Tbilisi)
nonstop
Challenger 350 9 seats £17,050

How to read those figures

– Each price is for the whole aircraft rather than per seat. A Praetor 600 from Manchester with eight aboard comes to about £1,800 a head;

– Georgian legs are less regular than the ones on a busy corridor to Germany or Italy, and they cluster after the harvest and festival weekends, so an open return date helps.

Helicopter charter

In Georgia a helicopter turns a day on mountain roads into less than an hour. Local operators fly the Airbus H125, which seats five passengers, for passenger transport, rescue and medical flights, and heli-skiing in the resort zones is run under licences issued by the Georgian civil aviation authority for named areas. Sightseeing flights are sold from Tbilisi too: one tour seller lists a two-hour Kazbegi day for a group of up to five, which flies over Mtskheta, Ananuri fortress and the Zhinvali reservoir and lands beside Gergeti Trinity Church. These are our own planning times from Tbilisi in good weather:

Tbilisi to Telavi
the capital of Kakheti and the Alazani valley, in place of two hours or more on the road
about 25 min
Tbilisi to Gudauri
the ski resort, 120 km by road
about 35 min
Tbilisi to Kazbegi
Stepantsminda and the church under Kazbek
about 40 min
Tbilisi to Bakuriani
the ski resort in the Lesser Caucasus, 180 km by road
about 40 min
Tbilisi to Mestia
the heart of Svaneti, about ten hours by road
about 1 h 15 min
Tbilisi to Batumi
the Black Sea coast, with a fuel stop possible depending on the load
about 1 h 25 min

The times assume a cruise of about 115 knots and move with the weather, the wind and the load, which in the mountains is limited by altitude and temperature. We confirm the route, the number of passengers and the baggage allowance for your date before the offer goes out.

Two points on Georgian rotary legs

A landing at a hotel, a ski slope or a church away from an aerodrome needs a site agreed in advance, and the operator tells us which sites it can use. Heli-skiing operates only in the resort zones for which it is licensed, and only in weather that allows visual flight. In the ski season and the harvest weeks the helicopters go first, so we book the helicopter and the jet as one trip.

Georgian charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

Six typical jobs put together from booking notes with the particulars changed, so none describes one named client or date.

TBILISI · TWO NIGHTS

Two directors and a signing on the second morning

Birmingham - Tbilisi, Praetor 600, about 5 h 05 min · 2 pax

The permit went in well over a week ahead and the handler had the lounge for both directions. Wheels up at eight, on the ground in Tbilisi in the early evening, a dinner, a signing the next morning and the flight home on the second night.

GUDAURI · A SKI WEEKEND

Five friends and a Friday departure

London Luton - Tbilisi, Phenom 300E via Istanbul, about 6 h 40 min · 5 pax

The stop in Istanbul added an hour but saved several thousand pounds against a larger cabin. The road to the slopes took two to three hours on a good day, so the group kept a helicopter option for the return and flew home on the Monday.

KAKHETI · THE HARVEST WEEKEND

A tasting party in late September

Manchester - Tbilisi, Praetor 600, about 5 h 05 min · 7 pax

Seven guests, four nights and two days among the cellars of the Alazani valley, with the harvest filling the guesthouses. The arrival was set for the late afternoon, and the cars to Telavi were booked to meet the aircraft.

BATUMI · A SUMMER BASE

A family week on the Black Sea

Biggin Hill - Batumi, Phenom 300E via Istanbul, about 6 h 15 min · 4 pax

The family landed at Batumi, not Tbilisi, which saved about £1,800 on the Phenom and a day of road. Batumi directs visiting small aircraft to a marshalled parking area and lists no hangar for visitors, so the stay was agreed with the handler before departure.

WITH THE DOG · BLOOD TEST FIRST

A couple and a labrador on a ten-day stay

Biggin Hill - Tbilisi, Praetor 600, about 4 h 55 min · 2 pax + dog

The rabies blood test was taken in Britain more than three months before the return, the Georgian certificate was dated five days before the flight out, and the dog was presented on arrival. A vet in Tbilisi gave the tapeworm treatment the day before the flight home.

EMPTY LEG · AFTER A FESTIVAL WEEKEND

A flexible return to London

Tbilisi - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg via Istanbul, about 6 h 40 min · 3 pax

The client gave us a window of three days instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid about £11,250, a little under half of a fresh one-way charter on the same sector, for a Tuesday departure.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Georgia

1How long does it take to fly to Georgia by private jet?

About 6 hours 35 minutes from London to Tbilisi on a Phenom 300E with a fuel stop in Istanbul, and about 4 hours 55 minutes nonstop in a Praetor 600 from Biggin Hill. From Manchester or Birmingham the Praetor takes about 5 hours 5 minutes. Georgia is four hours ahead of Britain in winter and three hours ahead in British summer.

2How much does a private jet to Georgia cost?

From about £26,500 one way from Biggin Hill to Tbilisi on a Phenom 300E with a stop in Istanbul. A nonstop Praetor 600 from the same airfield is about £32,400, and a Challenger 350 from Glasgow about £41,200. The same Phenom to Batumi starts from £24,700, and a hop from Tbilisi to Kutaisi starts from £3,100 on a turboprop.

3Which airports do private jets use in Georgia?

Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli is the main gateway, with customs, immigration, handling and fuel listed round the clock and a VIP lounge in the former first terminal. Batumi on the Black Sea and Kutaisi in the west are the other two international airports, both with customs and immigration listed round the clock. Natakhtari and Mestia are small domestic fields, and no airfield in Abkhazia or South Ossetia is available.

4What are the passport, customs and permit rules for a private flight from Britain to Georgia?

British citizens may visit Georgia without a visa for up to one year, and the passport should be valid for the whole stay. The operator applies to the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency at least five working days before a landing, and the permit is valid for 24 hours from the date requested. Cash worth more than 30,000 lari is declared. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

5Can I take my dog or cat on a private jet to Georgia?

Yes. The animal needs an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 30 days old and a veterinary certificate issued within days of travel, and it is inspected on arrival. Georgia is not a listed country for entry to Britain, so the way home needs a rabies blood test at least 30 days after the vaccination, a three-month wait from the sample date, a Great Britain pet health certificate and, for a dog, a tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing.

6How early should I book a private jet to Georgia?

As soon as the dates are known, and never later than the five working days that the permit asks for. The harvest weeks in late September and October, the Tbilisoba festival in the second half of October and the ski weekends from December to April fill the lounge and the apron first, and Tbilisi has one usable runway, so a long stay is agreed before the aircraft leaves Britain.
