Private jet charter in Libya

Libya sits in an unusual place among the countries we are asked about: the rules that govern European operators contain a specific exception for its coastal airports, and yet a British-arranged charter still cannot use it. This page explains the gap between the two, and what we fly in the meantime. Our customers have access to 6500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. For 15 years of successful work, we have established partnerships with the world’s largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you the most favorable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The aircraft we quote for these sectors sit at the London fields and in the North, with Mediterranean-based partners covering anything that starts closer to Malta.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter towards Libya depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Current status of private jet flights to Libya

There is a narrow exception in the rules for Libya, and it still does not open the door to a British charter - the position as of August 2026

– The European safety bulletin over the Tripoli flight information region tells operators not to fly there at any altitude, with one carve-out: coastal airports may be served if the approach is made from the sea, if there is full coordination with local air traffic control, and if the operator has completed a robust risk assessment. The bulletin was extended on 24 July 2026 and now runs to 31 January 2027;

– The second of those conditions is the one that defeats it in practice. Libya has two competing authorities each running their own air traffic control, one in Tripoli and one in Benghazi, and aircraft have been given contradictory instructions depending on whose sector they were deemed to be in. Radar and information services have failed repeatedly. Coordinating fully with a service that is duplicated and intermittent is not something an operator can certify;

– British operators are no longer banned outright but are strongly advised against entering the region, the American regulator maintains its own warning, and no war-risk cover is written for a Western business jet landing in Libya. Scheduled carriers are returning, with Air Cairo since May 2026 and an Italian resumption to Tripoli announced for September, and we watch that closely. It has not yet changed what a British broker can arrange.

Of the countries we are asked about, Libya is where the gap between the current position and a resumption looks narrowest, precisely because the exception is already written into the text. What we fly now is the approach: Malta, less than two hundred nautical miles off the Libyan coast and the traditional staging point for Tripoli, Tunis, which has the working land border, and Istanbul, which carries the deepest choice of onward services to all three Libyan airports.

What the rules allow
sea approach, full ATC coordination, robust risk assessment
coastal airports, three conditions
What defeats it
contradictory clearances, repeated radar and information failures
two rival air traffic authorities
Also standing
and a separate American warning over the whole region
UK advice against, no cover
What we fly instead
prices and distances in the tables below
Malta, Tunis, Istanbul

Every price on this page is indicative and built the way a real quote is built: a named aircraft on a named sector, two passengers unless stated otherwise. The gateway table below shows current levels, and a personal calculation takes our consultant about 20 minutes through any form here.

How long does it take to fly to Libya?

London to Tripoli is 1,285 nautical miles, a little over three hours in a midsize cabin, and one of the shortest sectors we are ever asked about towards a country we cannot serve. The distance was never the obstacle here. The times below are to the gateways, and from Malta the remaining hop is under forty minutes in the air.

Worked examples on the gateway sectors. Distances are great-circle and the times include climb and descent:

1 route London Luton - Tunis (TUN), by private jet Citation XLS+

  • Aircraft range: 3,889 km;
  • Flight distance: 1,008 nm / 1,867 km;
  • Cruising speed: 800 km/h;
  • Flight time: 2:45 h

2 route London Luton - Malta (MLA), by private jet Citation XLS+

  • Aircraft range: 3,889 km;
  • Flight distance: 1,152 nm / 2,133 km;
  • Cruising speed: 800 km/h;
  • Flight time: 3:00 h

3 route Manchester - Malta (MLA), by private jet Praetor 600

  • Aircraft range: 7,441 km;
  • Flight distance: 1,264 nm / 2,341 km;
  • Cruising speed: 863 km/h;
  • Flight time: 3:05 h

4 route London Luton - Istanbul (IST), by private jet Citation Latitude

  • Aircraft range: 5,000 km;
  • Flight distance: 1,347 nm / 2,495 km;
  • Cruising speed: 830 km/h;
  • Flight time: 3:25 h

5 route Edinburgh - Malta (MLA), by private jet Challenger 350

  • Aircraft range: 5,926 km;
  • Flight distance: 1,409 nm / 2,609 km;
  • Cruising speed: 870 km/h;
  • Flight time: 3:25 h

The exact flight time depends on the model of the business jet, as well as the speed of the tail or head wind. Our consultant will make a detailed calculation of the flight time for the chosen business jet.

From the gateway onwards

– Malta is 188 nautical miles from Tripoli Mitiga, 214 from Misrata and 366 from Benghazi Benina, which is why the island has been the staging point for Libyan business for a decade;

– Tunis is 281 nautical miles from Tripoli by air and rather less by road through the Ras Ajdir crossing, the route most people working in western Libya actually use;

– Istanbul is furthest at 894 nautical miles from Tripoli, but Turkish carriers serve Mitiga, Benina and Misrata, which makes it the single gateway that reaches all three;

– These onward legs are scheduled services or ground transport, not our charters. The same guidance that keeps our aircraft out of the region applies whichever gateway you start from.

If you have any questions about the departure or the flight itself, you can ask them using the form below:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database holds over 6500 business jets, and the five classes below are the ones that appear in quotes for these sectors. The hourly rates are the starting levels we see on British departures to Tunisia, Malta and Turkey:

Turboprops

A feeder class here rather than a sector one: they bring you to Luton or Manchester from a regional field, and cover short hops once you are in the central Mediterranean.

Beechcraft King Air 200 · 8 seatsfrom 1,500 EUR/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom 1,700 EUR/h
Piaggio P180 Avanti II · 8 seatsfrom 2,200 EUR/h

Light jets

Genuinely at home on these sectors. Tunis is barely a thousand nautical miles from the London area and Malta not much more, both well inside a light cabin, which makes this the sensible quote for two or three travellers.

Cessna Citation M2 · 7 seatsfrom 2,300 EUR/h
Embraer Phenom 300 · 6 seatsfrom 2,400 EUR/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 8 seatsfrom 2,500 EUR/h

Super-midsize

The class most often quoted, because the people heading for Libya travel with equipment: survey gear, oilfield kit, spares for a site. The hold decides the aircraft more often than the seat count does.

Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom 2,900 EUR/h
Cessna Citation Sovereign · 9 seatsfrom 3,400 EUR/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom 3,900 EUR/h
Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom 4,500 EUR/h

Heavy jets

For a full cabin from Scotland or Belfast, and for the crew rotations that move a dozen people at once. Also the class that copes best when a gateway closes at short notice and the flight has to divert.

Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom 4,900 EUR/h
Embraer Legacy 650 · 13 seatsfrom 4,900 EUR/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom 5,000 EUR/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom 6,500 EUR/h

Ultra-long range

Seldom needed on a three-hour sector, and generally booked when the central Mediterranean is one stop in a longer itinerary heading south into Africa or east towards the Gulf.

Bombardier Global 5000 · 13 seatsfrom 6,900 EUR/h
Gulfstream G550 · 16 seatsfrom 7,000 EUR/h
Bombardier Global 6000 · 13 seatsfrom 7,200 EUR/h

Business aviation airports in Libya

The list below is kept for reference. Several of these fields are working and taking scheduled traffic; none of them is available for a charter we would arrange, for the reasons set out at the top of this page. One correction is worth making before the list: Tripoli International (HLLT, TIP) has been closed since it was wrecked in the fighting of 2014, and every civil flight to the capital now uses Mitiga on the eastern edge of the city. The fields in service are:

  • Mitiga International Airport, Tripoli, ICAO - HLLM, IATA - MJI;
  • Benina International Airport, Benghazi, ICAO - HLLB, IATA - BEN;
  • Misrata International Airport, ICAO - HLMS, IATA - MRA.

The traffic concentrates on Tripoli, Benghazi and Misrata, with Sabha serving the south. For the current position on any specific field, ask our consultants.

business aviation

The wider network of Libyan airfields, again for reference rather than for booking, runs to the following:

  1. La Braq Airport (LAQ), Beida, Libya
  2. Sabha Airport (SEB), Sabha, Libya
  3. Kufra Airport (AKF), Kufra, Libya
  4. Ubari Airport (QUB), Ubari, Libya
  5. Ghadames Airport (LTD), Ghadames, Libya
  6. Ghat Airport (GHT), Ghat, Libya
  7. Tobruk Airport (TOB), Tobruk, Libya

At the gateway airports you are handled through the business aviation terminal, where there are no queues and arriving thirty minutes before departure is enough. Malta, Tunis and Istanbul each have one, and our consultants can tell you which handler meets you at which.

Types of flights

Our company provides all types of business flights. Due to a wide variety of jets, we can arrange:

  1. private flights;
  2. corporate flights;
  3. business class flights;
  4. concert tours;
  5. medical flights (with doctors and special equipment on board);
  6. tourist flights for large and small groups;
  7. sports charters for teams and coaching staff;
  8. combined flights (partly by business jet, and partly by helicopter);
  9. exclusive flights on luxury jets for businessmen, celebrities, and politicians;
  10. cargo flights, etc.

A flexible approach and a wide experience allow us to solve problems of any complexity. In 90% of cases, we manage to arrange urgent flights (on the day of application). But to be sure, we recommend you send a request at least 2-5 days before the desired date of departure.

Empty Legs

Another way to fly cheaper is to use Empty Legs. This service allows you to save on regular charter rates. As you know, part of the flights is one-way (for example, when the passenger flies from England to Malta). After the flight, the jet returns to its home base (for example, to London Farnborough airport) empty. Such flight is called “Empty Legs”. Empty leg flights can be as cheap as 50-75% off the standard charter price. This option is profitable for both the passengers and the charter companies. The clients can enjoy the services of business aviation at a very good price, while the airlines recoup part of the cost of fuel and jet maintenance.

It is almost impossible to find Empty Leg flights, as the information about them is stored in special databases available only to the aviation brokers and specialized companies. You should know that Empty Leg flights offer the same service as private jet charters. The passengers enjoy a 100% private jet flying experience. Services and flight conditions are discussed individually. We should note that our company cooperates with the world’s largest home bases, so we can offer our clients a wide choice of return flights. Just send a request to our manager who will help you find the best flight options. Please note that Empty Leg flights are sold out very quickly. To avoid such a problem, you can leave us a deposit, and we will contact you as soon as the flight of your choice becomes available. For additional information, check with the operators.

Jet Sharing

Today, Jet Sharing is just as popular as private jet charter. This service involves the joint rental of a business jet with other passengers (that is, the cost of the flight is divided equally between all passengers of a specific flight). This type of flight has become especially popular in the last few years. Many people like Jet Sharing because it allows you to enjoy all benefits of business aviation at favorable prices.

We should note that the number of passengers per Jet Sharing flight varies from 3 to 8, while the cost of the flight ranges from 1400 to 7100 euros (depending on the destination). This way, you can get a comfortable flight on a business jet (and maybe even meet new business partners) at a very good price. You can check out the schedule of Jet Sharing flights by filling in the online form or contacting our operators by phone or WhatsApp.

Main advantages of this service:

  • All privileges of business aviation, including the use of the business aviation terminal and the check-in 30 minutes before the flight, are retained;
  • You can also use the services of the VIP Lounge (included in the price of the flight);
  • No baggage restrictions;
  • Affordable price: jet sharing is much cheaper than private jet charter;
  • Pets can be carried directly in the aircraft cabin.

Our consultants will be happy to help you choose the best flight.

Helicopter charter

Helicopters here work the approaches: the British departure field, and the transfers around the gateway cities while an onward service is arranged. These are the legs we book most:

London home counties to Luton or Farnborough
the pick-up that starts an early southbound departure without the M25
15 to 25 minutes
Malta airport to Valletta and the harbour
the government and shipping quarter, where the old streets defeat a car
about 10 minutes
Malta to Gozo
the second island, when a meeting or a crew rest sits there
about 15 minutes
Tunis to Sousse and the coast
the industrial coast south of the capital, a slow drive in summer
about 30 minutes
Istanbul airport to the European side
Levent, Besiktas and the Bosphorus hotels, against an hour or more in traffic
about 15 minutes

The machines that work these routes

– Airbus H125 and Bell 407, the light singles behind most private transfers in the London area and precise into a confined site;

– Airbus H130 and Bell 429 for a family or a party of six, the usual choice on the Maltese legs;

– Airbus H145 and AgustaWestland AW139 where twin engines are wanted over water, which on the Malta to Gozo crossing is what many clients ask for.

Two points on rotary legs here

– None of these legs cross to Libya. The exception in the bulletin is for fixed-wing operations into coastal airports under strict conditions, and it does nothing for a helicopter crossing two hundred miles of open sea;

– The Maltese and Tunisian summer brings strong afternoon sea breezes that make coastal rotary work uncomfortable rather than impossible, so morning slots are the ones worth asking for between June and September.

Private jet flights to Libya - frequently asked questions

1Can I charter a private jet to Tripoli in 2026?

Not through a British broker. The European safety bulletin allows coastal Libyan airports only where the approach is from the sea, coordination with local air traffic control is complete and a robust risk assessment has been done. With two rival authorities running air traffic control and repeated radar failures, that second condition cannot be met, and British operators are strongly advised against the region in any case.

2The rules mention an exception for coastal airports. Does that not cover Mitiga?

Geographically it could: Mitiga, Misrata and Benina all sit on the coast. The exception fails on the conditions rather than the geography. Full coordination assumes one air traffic service issuing consistent instructions, and Libya has two. Add the absence of war-risk cover for a Western business jet and the calculation is settled.

3How much does a flight towards Libya cost?

From about 15,400 EUR one way from London to Tunis, from about 16,900 EUR to Malta and from about 19,500 EUR to Istanbul, each buying the whole aircraft. These are short sectors by the standards of this kind of routing, which is why the prices sit below what a Gulf or Central Asian gateway costs.

4Which gateway is closest to Tripoli?

Malta, at 188 nautical miles, and it has been the staging point for Libyan business for a decade. Tunis is 281 miles by air but has the working land crossing at Ras Ajdir. Istanbul is furthest at 894 miles, and the only gateway whose carriers serve Mitiga, Benina and Misrata alike.

5Are scheduled airlines going back to Libya?

Gradually. Air Cairo started flights to Tripoli in May 2026, an Italian carrier has announced a September resumption, and European inspection teams visited Mitiga in July 2026 to assess security. We follow those developments closely, because they are the first thing that would move before the guidance itself changes.
