Business aviation airports in Bordeaux

Merignac is the airport and there is no serious alternative, which simplifies the conversation. It lies twelve kilometres west of the centre, has two runways of 3,100 and 2,415 metres, and shares the field with the French air force base that occupies its southern side. That last point matters less than it sounds: civil and military traffic are separated, and the business aviation terminal has its own entrance and its own apron.

The terminal itself is straightforward in the way the French ones usually are: direct access to the tarmac, no mandatory screening, customs and border control on request. • Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
• Praziquantel from a French vet 24 to 120 hours before landing back in Britain, recorded with the date and the product. Dogs only; cats are exempt.

Bordeaux as a destination

Bordeaux spent two centuries as a merchant port and looks it. The eighteenth century facades along the Garonne run for kilometres, the Place de la Bourse reflects itself in a sheet of water two centimetres deep, and the whole of the old centre carries a UNESCO listing as an urban ensemble rather than as a set of monuments. The city was scrubbed clean of its coal soot in the nineteen nineties and has been fashionable ever since.

What surrounds it is the point for most arrivals. The Gironde holds some sixty appellations across both banks of the estuary, and the names on the left bank read like a price list: Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Estephe going north through the Medoc. Across the water Saint-Emilion and Pomerol grow Merlot on limestone and clay and produce wines that behave quite differently. The two banks are fifty minutes apart by road and fifteen by helicopter, which is the practical reason rotary legs get booked here.

West of the city the land changes again. The Landes forest, planted to stabilise the dunes, runs a hundred kilometres down to the Basque country, and where it meets the Atlantic sits the Bassin d’Arcachon with its oyster beds and the Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe at some 110 metres. Biarritz and the Spanish border are two hours south by road and forty minutes by air.

• En primeur in the spring, the week the trade tastes the previous vintage from barrel. The single busiest period of the year on this route, and the one that needs booking months ahead;
• The harvest in September and October, when the properties are working and visits are harder to arrange but the region is at its best;
