Private jet charter in Chamonix

A light jet leaves a London airfield and is on the ground at Geneva in about an hour and twenty minutes, and the rest of the journey to Chamonix is a road or a helicopter, because the valley under Mont Blanc has no airport that takes a business jet. Private Jets UK plans every Chamonix charter in two linked pieces for that reason. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. What the valley does have is helicopter landing sites and, at Argentière, the base of a scenic helicopter operator, while the small airfield at Sallanches, which older guides still place about 25 km down the road, has closed. Geneva, 88 km away, takes most of the traffic; Annecy, Sion, Aosta, Chambéry and Lyon each win for a particular reason. The decisions that matter are the gateway, the last stretch up the valley, and the week of the year.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Chamonix depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Chamonix?

About an hour and twenty minutes from Biggin Hill or London City to Geneva in a light jet, then twenty minutes by helicopter or an hour and a quarter by road, with one hour of clock difference to add on arrival, because France and Switzerland both keep Central European time. The British fields we use lie 404 to 728 nautical miles from Geneva, which makes the jet leg a short sector from the south of England and an easy midsize job from Scotland. The table gives the flight from each field to Geneva, the airport most Chamonix parties use.

Door to door, and the clock on the wall

Leave a London airfield at seven in the morning and the wheels touch at Geneva around half past nine local time. The Business Aviation Terminal stands apart from the airline halls, so the passport and customs check takes minutes and not the queue of a winter Saturday. From the terminal the helicopter reaches the valley in about 20 minutes by our estimate. The road is 88 km and takes about an hour and a quarter on a clear day, and up to two hours when the traffic is heavy. Central London to a table in Chamonix therefore comes to roughly four hours by air and a little over five with the road, against most of a day by a scheduled flight and a shuttle bus.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Up to four people with ordinary luggage, a light jet. Eighty minutes in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is no hardship, and the money saved over a midsize cabin buys the helicopter seats for the valley;

– A climbing or ski party changes the sum. Skis, boots, ice axes, crampons and a week of layers fill the hold well before the seats are full, so a Citation XLS+ or a Latitude is then the honest quote, and we show both figures. A helicopter carries less than a jet, which is why the baggage plan covers the second leg as well;

– A heavy jet earns its place when the party flies as one group or carries on from Geneva to a third country. It does not shorten the 88 km up the valley, and the 3,900 m runway at Geneva takes anything we would put on it.

Prices for the private jet flights to Chamonix

Typical jet legs from Britain, cheapest first, all of them into Geneva. The road or helicopter leg up the valley is quoted with the jet and is not included. Christmas week, the February half-term and the Ultra-Trail week at the end of August price above these figures, and the calendar block further down explains when.

Geneva is the default and not the only door. From Biggin Hill the same light jet reaches each of the six gateways below within about £700 of the cheapest, so the choice is made by the last stretch, the hour of arrival, the side of the border and the paperwork for a pet or a permit, and hardly at all by the price of the flight.

Private jet flights from Chamonix

Nothing takes off from Chamonix in a jet, so the way home is the arrival in reverse: down the valley by helicopter or car, and out from the airport that suits the day. Many Chamonix trips are one leg of something longer, and Geneva has the runway and the handlers for any onward sector. Typical one-way prices from Geneva:

Why the return is planned from Geneva or Annecy

The valley has approved landing sites for helicopters, some of them on the glaciers, but no strip where a fixed-wing aircraft can land or leave. The airfield at Sallanches, about 25 km down the road, is closed. A client with a Pilatus PC-12 or a King Air is therefore never offered Chamonix as a point of departure: the aircraft waits at Geneva, Annecy or Sion, and the party comes down the valley by helicopter or by car. On the day itself the road decides. A Saturday descent in February can take far longer than a Tuesday one, so the time to leave the hotel is counted back from the take-off slot and not from breakfast.

Before you accept an onward quote from Chamonix

– Which airport the quote starts from. A fixed-wing price that names Chamonix as the departure point was written without checking, and it will change as soon as the aircraft is pinned to a real field;

– Which side of the mountain. Courmayeur looks like a neighbour on the map, but the way there is the Mont Blanc tunnel, so a quote that lands at Aosta is a different trip from one that lands at Geneva, and when the tunnel is shut the drive between the two valleys becomes a long detour;

– Whether the legs are one booking. A week in the valley followed by a weekend in Paris or on the coast costs noticeably less arranged as one trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning twice.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Chamonix:

Light jets, where most Geneva bookings land

Eighty minutes from the south of England makes this the sensible class for four or five people with ordinary luggage. The 3,900 m runway at Geneva takes every one of these without a thought, so the saving goes on the helicopter or the hotel.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for ski bags and mountain kit

Skis, boot bags, ice axes and a week of layers fill a hold faster than they fill seats. Midsize jets are the class for six to eight people, and the one to check against the runway when Annecy or Aosta is the plan.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a chalet party that flies as one group, a team that works in the air, or a trip that carries on from the Alps to Paris, the coast or the Gulf. These cabins are Geneva aircraft, since the field and its terminal take them without a question about limits.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The Pilatus PC-12 and the King Air 350 suit the shorter fields around the massif, Annecy, Sion and Aosta, and cost much less per hour than any jet. They are valley aircraft on this trip: neither is quoted for a departure from Chamonix itself.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

The usual last stretch from Geneva, Annecy or Sion, and the way to see the massif from the air. Landing sites are agreed in advance, and the machine depends on the party, the altitude and the day.

This is a small part of what is available. A winter booking for Chamonix usually finds an aircraft already based at Geneva, in the Alpine valleys or on the Riviera, and a quote may name Lyon or Nice as the positioning point. That is how a gateway destination works, and it is often where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports for Chamonix

Chamonix has no airport for a business jet, so the question is which of six airfields in or beside the Alps suits the aircraft, the hour and the side of the mountain you want. The table runs from the obvious choice to the specialised ones, and the last row is the valley itself.

Airport What it gives you
Geneva International
GVA / LSGG
The gateway for most Chamonix parties, 88 km from the town. A single runway of 3,900 m, a Business Aviation Terminal in the south-west of the field with private immigration and customs, and Jet Aviation's FBO open every day from 06:00 to 22:00 with three executive lounges. Geneva asks for prior permission for every general and business aviation movement, requested through the handling agent. Winter weekends are the pinch point, and the late-January week of the Davos forum adds to it. The road is about an hour and a quarter, the helicopter about 20 minutes
Annecy-Haute-Savoie-Mont Blanc, Meythet
NCY / LFLP
The small field on the French side, about 94 km from Chamonix and an hour by road. One paved runway of 1,630 m by 30 m, handling compulsory for aircraft of 3 tonnes or more, customs and police needing a day's notice through the operator, and international flights accepted from 08:00 to 20:00 local time under conditions. The tower is published from 08:00 to 18:00 UTC, which is 09:00 to 19:00 local time, and on winter weekends a facilitated schedule applies, with an authorisation number in the flight plan. The right field for a light or midsize jet that lands before the evening and keeps the trip inside France
Sion
SIR / LSGS
A Swiss airport in the Valais, about 68 km from Chamonix by the Martigny road and the nearest gateway for Verbier. A runway of 2,000 m by 40 m, shared with the Swiss Air Force, a crew qualification for the instrument approaches and compulsory handling for visiting aircraft above 3 tonnes. It suits a trip that splits the week between Chamonix and the Swiss resorts, and a helicopter of about 15 minutes crosses the border ridge
Aosta Valley, Corrado Gex
AOT / LIMW
The Italian door to the massif, 34 km from Courmayeur and about 30 minutes by road, with the Mont Blanc tunnel between Courmayeur and Chamonix. Runway 09/27 of 1,499 m by 30 m at about 546 m, with a category I instrument approach on runway 27 reserved for operators authorised by the Italian civil aviation authority. The published aerodrome entry shows a daylight operation, customs on three hours' notice, 48 hours' notice for passenger flights and no low-visibility operations, and it warns of wind shear. A light jet is the sensible size, and the airport is the answer when Courmayeur is the real destination
Chambéry and Lyon-Saint Exupéry
CMF / LFLB and LYS / LFLL
Chambéry-Savoie Mont Blanc has a runway of 2,020 m, its own business aviation terminal, customs on 24 hours' notice and a winter facilitation scheme. It is about 145 km from Chamonix, an hour and three-quarters by road, so it matters when the trip also takes in Courchevel or the Tarentaise. Lyon-Saint Exupéry, about 220 km away, has runways of 4,000 m and 2,670 m with customs and immigration open day and night without notice. It is the answer for a very late arrival, a very large cabin or a Saturday when Geneva is full
Chamonix itself
helicopter sites
Landing sites approved for helicopters, some of them on the glaciers, and no runway. The airfield at Sallanches, which older guides list 25 km down the valley, has closed. For a jet the valley is a destination by road or by rotor, never by runway

Four points settle most Chamonix arrivals:

Choose the gateway

Geneva for most parties, for large aircraft and for a late arrival. Annecy for a light jet that stays inside France and lands before six. Aosta when Courmayeur or the Italian side is the aim. Sion when Verbier shares the week. Chambéry or Lyon when the trip includes the Tarentaise or the hour is very late. The flight costs about the same to each; the last stretch is what differs.

Hours, slots and daylight

Geneva needs prior permission for every general aviation movement and gets crowded on winter weekends. Annecy has a tower that is shut in the evening, and Aosta works by daylight. Helicopters over the massif fly by day and in useful visibility, so a late arrival at any airport usually ends in a car.

Border and passport

Britain is outside Schengen; France, Switzerland and Italy are inside it. You clear the border at the first airport you land at. Switzerland stays outside the EU customs area, and France runs checks on arrivals from Switzerland and Italy, so passports go in the pocket for the drive. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport under ten years old and valid three months beyond departure.

Roads, tyres and the tunnel

From 1 November to 31 March a car in Haute-Savoie needs four tyres marked 3PMSF, or chains or textile socks carried and fitted when the B26 signs are lit. The Mont Blanc tunnel is slow by design and sometimes shut for works. We give the driver the handler as well as the flight, and the car is booked for the real arrival time.

business aviation

Border, passport and the Mont Blanc tunnel

Three Schengen countries meet over Mont Blanc, and the first landing is where the passport is checked. At Geneva that means the Swiss business terminal, after which the road crosses into France. Geneva also has a French sector, a pier of the airline terminal that exists under an agreement between France and the canton of Geneva and is reached by road through the customs gate at Ferney-Voltaire. It serves airline passengers going between Geneva and France and does not help a London charter, because a traveller arriving on an international flight cannot leave straight for France without passing through Switzerland. At Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon the border service is at the airport itself, with notice given by the operator. At Aosta it is the Italian service, on three hours' notice. France has been checking travellers who arrive from Italy and Switzerland, mostly at road crossings, and renews the measure in periods of six months, so the passport stays with you on the road.

The tunnel deserves a paragraph of its own, because it is how the Italian side joins the French one. It is 11.6 km long, carries traffic in both directions in a single gallery, and holds vehicles to between 50 and 70 km/h with 150 m between them, which is why a queue builds quickly. In summer the French approach often queues with holidaymakers returning from Italy. The operators also close the tunnel in both directions for works on its vault: in some autumns for about 15 weeks, in others with no long closure. Whoever is planning Courmayeur or Aosta checks the published dates first, since the alternatives are a long way round over a Swiss pass. A first-time visitor to the Schengen area may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints, a free step whose record stays valid for three years. For the way home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and passengers who are neither British nor Irish citizens may need an electronic travel authorisation for the UK.

passport and customs paperwork for a private jet flight

Landing permits, slots and the crew

The permit depends on the airport. A British operator running a charter into Switzerland needs a Swiss permit: individual permits for up to three flights in three months are requested at least 72 hours before the first flight, and a chain of four or more flights needs an operating permit filed at least 30 days ahead. For France, the air services agreement between Britain and the European Union gives each side third and fourth freedom rights, so a plain London to Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon flight and back runs on the operator's usual authorisations. The question appears when the routing carries passengers between two French points or collects passengers in France for a third country. France then runs a non-objection procedure for operators without an EU licence, with a request filed through its SAGA system at least two working days ahead. Italy publishes its own authorisation rules for operators from outside the EU, with deadlines of 3 working days for a single air taxi flight and 6 for a charter passenger flight. The operator confirms with the Italian authority what a plain London to Aosta service needs, and we ask for the answer in writing. The operator files and we track.

What is specific to a Chamonix trip

– Geneva. Prior permission for every general or business aviation movement, requested through the handler. Winter weekends and the Davos week are the days to book the slot together with the aircraft, not after it;

– Annecy. On winter weekends and some Fridays a facilitated schedule applies, and an authorisation number is entered in the flight plan. Customs and police need a day's notice, and the tower is shut in the evening;

– Aosta. A daylight operation, the instrument approach limited to authorised operators, customs on three hours' notice and no low-visibility operations. The operator must be authorised before the quote is accepted;

– Sion. A crew qualification is needed for the approach, and handling is compulsory above 3 tonnes;

– Helicopters. Landing on private ground needs the owner's consent, and in the French massif only approved sites may be used, so the site is named in the quote.

From the apron to the Aiguille du Midi

Chamonix lies at about 1,035 m on average, at the foot of a mountain that rises a little over 4,800 m above the sea, and the town, home to some 8,700 people, hosted the first Winter Olympic Games. The skiing runs in three areas along the valley from Le Tour to Les Houches: Les Grands Montets, Brévent-Flégère and the Balme area. Everything the visitor came for is vertical and measured in cable-car minutes, while the distances that matter for a charter are the ones that run outward, to the airports and over the border.

The mountain side of the trip has its own timetable. The Aiguille du Midi cable car is the start of the Vallée Blanche, a 20 km off-piste route down the glacier that is skied with a guide, and in summer it connects across the border to Pointe Helbronner and the Skyway Monte Bianco, which runs down to Courmayeur. Those two links are summer lifts only. We pass the real arrival time to the hotel and to the guide, because in a valley where the day starts with a cable car the person who is waiting at the lift is part of the booking.

Flying to Chamonix with a dog or a cat

A dog in the mountains is an ordinary booking, and the flight is the easy part: the animal normally sits beside you in the cabin. The paperwork is where the trip is won or lost, because the airport you choose also chooses the rulebook. Land at Geneva and Switzerland checks the animal first and France after; land at Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon and only the French check applies; land at Aosta and the animal enters Italy, with the Mont Blanc tunnel as the next border.

private flight with animals

France and Italy are both EU countries and apply the same EU rules to a pet arriving from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU, and valid for the return as stated on the certificate. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, presented at a travellers' point of entry, which we confirm in writing for the airport;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

What Switzerland asks for when a pet lands at Geneva or Sion: a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days before travel, and either a valid Swiss or EU pet passport or an official veterinary certificate issued in the country of departure. There is a mandatory pet check at the red customs exit, and an animal with missing documents can be refused. The Swiss veterinary office names Basel, Geneva and Zurich as the entry points for animals flown in, so Geneva is the right Swiss airport for a pet, and Sion is a question we settle in writing.

What catches owners out on the Chamonix run

– Two borders in one morning. A British dog that lands at Geneva has cleared Switzerland and then drives into France. How the French side treats an animal that has already entered Switzerland is something we settle with the authorities for your dates, and we plan on the stricter reading, with a certificate that is valid on both sides. Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon keep the whole trip under one set of rules;

– The tapeworm window. France and Italy do not ask for it on the way in, only Britain asks on the way home, so it is a vet appointment booked in the valley towards the end of the stay. Count back from the departure time, because a flight that slips by a day can push the 24 to 120 hours out of reach;

– The cable car and the helicopter. A rotary operator agrees to carry an animal separately from the jet, the hotel or chalet must accept it, and a lift company has its own rule for dogs in a cabin. Ask all three before the quote, since the helicopter is the step most likely to say no.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and a quarantine of up to four months awaits an animal that arrives in Britain without meeting the rules.

The Chamonix calendar: a ski winter, a trail-running August and a long autumn pause

Chamonix has two real seasons and one very loud week. The ski winter fills the valley from the end of November, the cable cars and the walkers arrive in May, and the last week of August belongs to the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. Which week you want matters more than which jet you choose.

Late Nov to early May
The ski season. In the published lift dates the Grands Montets and Flégère open at the end of November, most of the valley by mid-December and the Aiguille du Midi with the Vallée Blanche in the third week of December. Most areas close in the middle of April, while the Grands Montets and the Aiguille du Midi stay open into early May. Snow moves the dates, and we check the lift status before the quote
Christmas and New Year
The Christmas village in the town runs from the second half of December into the first days of January, with a parade on Christmas Eve. It is also the busiest fortnight of the winter: Geneva is often busy with other business aircraft, a helicopter is the first item to sell out, and a booking made several weeks ahead is simpler than one made a fortnight before
Late January
The week of the World Economic Forum in Davos presses the ramp at Geneva. A booking in that week is better routed through Annecy or Lyon, with the helicopter arranged separately
February
School half-term in Britain and France. Saturday is the changeover day for the chalets, and that is when the road from Geneva is at its most congested, as it is at Christmas
Late April and May
The valley lifts close by the middle of April and the Grands Montets and the Aiguille du Midi run into early May, after which the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers railway keep going through the summer to the start of November. Quiet aprons and lower prices, and empty legs back from the Alps
Late June
The Mont Blanc Marathon, over three days starting on the last Friday of the month. The 42 km trail race starts and finishes in the town and climbs about 2,730 m, and the weekend also has 10 km, 23 km and ultra distances. Hotels fill, and the aircraft bring runners and their families
Late July
The Cosmo Jazz Festival, which has run from the end of July into the first days of August, with concerts around the valley and many of them free. Concerts rather than crowds, a gentler week for aircraft and hotels than the end of August
Mid-August
The Fête des Guides, traditionally held at Gaillands on 15 August, celebrates the valley's mountaineering history with a parade, a market and music. It is the middle of the French holiday and the valley is full
End of August
Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc week. The main race is a loop of about 170 km through France, Italy and Switzerland with about 10,000 m of climbing, starting and ending in Chamonix, and it is one of several races in the week. The town is at its busiest of the summer, and Geneva and the helicopters are booked well in advance
October to November
The valley rests: the Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers railway shut at the start of November and the lifts are closed. In some autumns the Mont Blanc tunnel is closed in both directions for around 15 weeks, in others there is no long closure, and the dates are published by the operators. Charter quotes sit at the low end of the range

Why a Saturday in February and the Ultra-Trail week cost more

Not the flying. The European light and midsize fleet is large and Geneva is well placed in it. What tightens is the helicopter capacity in the valley, the ramp space at Geneva, the supply of good cars and the hotel rooms, all in the same week. A booking made two weeks before the half-term can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from Lyon or Nice and a helicopter at an awkward hour. The same booking made five or six weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside those weeks Chamonix is an easy destination, and a charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Chamonix price down

  • Avoid the Saturday. An arrival on a Sunday or a weekday spares the transfer traffic on the valley road, and both the aircraft and the helicopter are easier to find;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits at Geneva, Lyon or on the coast needs less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of this length positioning is a meaningful part of the bill;
  • Check whether Annecy or Lyon works as well. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill, the sector to Annecy is priced about £200 higher than the one to Geneva, and Lyon-Saint Exupéry about £50 higher. The differences are small, so let the hour of arrival, the border and the road decide, and then price the last stretch.

Types of flights

Chamonix produces a mix of its own, because it is a mountaineering town and a ski town at once, and because three countries share the mountain it stands under.

  • Ski weeks and long weekends in Chamonix, Argentière and Les Houches, flown on a Saturday or a Friday, with children, ski bags and a helicopter on the last stretch;
  • Guided days on the high ground: the Vallée Blanche, the Aiguille du Midi and the glaciers, often as part of a long weekend;
  • Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley side, reached through the Mont Blanc tunnel or flown to Aosta, for clients who want skiing on both sides of the massif;
  • Verbier and the Swiss resorts, about an hour from Chamonix, for a week that splits between the two;
  • Summer walking, climbing and running, from the Mont Blanc Marathon in June to the Ultra-Trail in late August, with parties of runners and their supporters;
  • A lake stop at Annecy, about an hour away, for those who want the old town and the water before or after the mountains.

The long weekend is the trip to look at closely. Leave London on a Friday morning and you are in the valley by lunch with an afternoon on the mountain; return on Sunday evening and the aircraft and crew wait for you rather than going home. That waiting is paid for, but it usually comes out cheaper than two separate one-way charters, and we quote it both ways so the difference is visible. A summer day trip is possible too, with a cable car to 3,842 m before dinner, though a storm that closes the lift makes the day a poor candidate for a fixed schedule.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Chamonix produces them in a few regular patterns, and it helps to know what they are.

Where Chamonix empty legs come from

– The Saturday changeover. Aircraft bring one party out on the Saturday and fly home empty, or arrive empty to collect the next, so the Saturday and Sunday sectors between Geneva and Britain are the ones most often offered;

– The Ultra-Trail week and the Mont Blanc Marathon. Aircraft that bring runners and their families to Geneva leave empty a day or two after the finish, and the legs back towards Britain, Paris and the coast appear then;

– The end of the season. In April and early May operators bring their winter aircraft back from the Alps, and those legs are often priced low. The summer pattern is thinner.

Because the corridor from the Alps to Britain is thinner than the busiest London routes, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular Saturday. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Chamonix match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

For Chamonix the helicopter is a choice for most parties, because the road from Geneva is under two hours on an ordinary day, and it becomes the right answer on a peak Saturday, in a snowfall that slows the valley and for anyone who would rather not add a mountain road to a morning of flying. The aircraft puts the party down at an agreed site and the transfer takes about 20 minutes from Geneva. A scenic operator with a base at Argentière also flies loops of the massif, of 15, 20 and 30 minutes, and the 20-minute flight reaches the summit of Mont Blanc.

Geneva to Chamonix
38 nm in a straight line, the usual transfer from the main gateway
about 20 minutes
Annecy to Chamonix
33 nm in a straight line, the quickest hop from the French side
about 15 minutes
Sion to Chamonix
27 nm across the border ridge, with Swiss and French formalities to arrange
about 15 minutes
Aosta to Chamonix
25 nm across the range, with Italian and French formalities to arrange
about 15 minutes
Chambéry to Chamonix
47 nm in a straight line, against an hour and three-quarters on the road
about 25 minutes
Lyon Saint-Exupéry to Chamonix
78 nm in a straight line, against more than two hours on the motorway
about 40 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. In the French massif it may put down only on an approved site, and the prefecture has described a landing outside the designated glacier sites, such as those at Le Tour and Argentière, as a prohibited zone. The mountain law also bans leisure drop-offs by helicopter or small aeroplane on the slopes. A transfer from an airport to an agreed site is different work, and we confirm the site and the authorisation in writing;

– Weather and altitude set the schedule. Cloud in the valley or wind on the ridges can ground a helicopter on a day when the jet lands at Geneva without trouble, so every mountain transfer has a road alternative inside the same booking;

– Capacity is thin on peak Saturdays and in the Ultra-Trail week. Book the helicopter together with the jet, and expect to be told there is no rotary capacity if you do not.

The machines on this ground are the Airbus H125 for four or five passengers, the wider H130 for groups, and the H135 and Bell 429 where a twin is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Chamonix charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in general terms and not as dated or named bookings.

SKI SATURDAY · THE HOLD BOOKED THE CABIN

Six people, six sets of ski kit and a February Saturday

Farnborough - Geneva, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 20 min · 6 pax

Boots, skis and a week of winter clothes took the hold well beyond what a light jet carries comfortably, so the quote moved up a class for that reason and not for the seats. The helicopter was requested with the aircraft, because on a peak Saturday it is the first thing to go, and a car stood ready as the fallback.

HELICOPTER LAST LEG · GENEVA TO THE VALLEY

A family of four and a first afternoon on the mountain

Biggin Hill - Geneva, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 20 min · 4 pax + helicopter

The jet landed at Geneva in the morning, the party walked from the business terminal to a waiting helicopter and was in Chamonix in about 20 minutes. The landing site at the hotel had been approved before the quote, and the skis went up by car with the driver.

ULTRA-TRAIL WEEK · FIXED DATES

Eight supporters for a friend on the 170 km loop

London Luton - Geneva, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 20 min · 8 pax

The dates belonged to the race and not to the client. The party booked six weeks ahead so as to be at the finish line in Chamonix when the runner came back, the helicopter was reserved with the jet, and the aircraft stayed at Geneva for the Sunday return rather than going home empty.

COURMAYEUR · THE OTHER AIRPORT WON

A weekend on the Italian side of the massif

London City - Aosta, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax

They asked for Geneva because it is the name everyone knows. Courmayeur is the other side of the Mont Blanc tunnel, and with the tunnel closed for works Geneva meant a long detour. Aosta is 34 km from Courmayeur, the aircraft was a light jet that suits its 1,499 m runway, and the customs notice went in with the flight plan.

A DOG ON BOARD · FEBRUARY

Four adults and a spaniel for a week in Chamonix

Bristol - Geneva, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 30 min · 4 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and the vet appointment for the tapeworm treatment had to fall between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, the chalet agreed to the dog, and the whole thing was settled in a single exchange of messages.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING WEST

A jet already going your way

Geneva - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 20 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party to the valley on the Saturday and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure to the London fields.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Chamonix

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Chamonix?

There is no airport in Chamonix, so the flight is to Geneva: 1 hour 20 minutes from Biggin Hill or London City in a light jet, and 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes from Farnborough or Luton in a Phenom, covering roughly 404 to 440 nautical miles. From Bristol or Birmingham allow 1 hour 30 minutes in a midsize jet, from Manchester 1 hour 35 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours. The last stretch is about 20 minutes by helicopter or an hour and a quarter by road. France and Switzerland are one hour ahead of Britain.

2How much does a private jet to Chamonix cost?

From about £6,400 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill to Geneva, and £6,500 from London City or £6,900 in a Phenom from Luton. A midsize cabin runs £8,300 to £9,400 from the south and the Midlands, and from Scotland allow £15,400 to £15,750. The helicopter or road transfer is quoted with the jet and is not included. Saturdays in the ski season, the February half-term, Christmas and the Ultra-Trail week at the end of August price above these figures.

3Is there an airport in Chamonix, and which one should a private jet use?

No. Chamonix has approved helicopter landing sites, some of them on the glaciers, and the airfield at Sallanches has closed. Geneva (GVA / LSGG), 88 km away, suits most parties and every cabin size, with a 3,900 m runway and its own business terminal. Annecy (NCY / LFLP) keeps the trip inside France for a light jet before the evening, Sion (SIR / LSGS) suits Verbier, Aosta (AOT / LIMW) suits Courmayeur and the Italian side, and Chambéry or Lyon cover the Tarentaise or a very late arrival. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill the sector to Annecy costs about £200 more than the one to Geneva.

4Do I need a visa, a landing permit or customs clearance for Chamonix?

Britain is outside Schengen, while France, Switzerland and Italy are inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival at the first airport. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport under ten years old and valid for three months beyond departure, and a first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints. France checks travellers arriving from Switzerland and Italy, so carry the passport on the road. Switzerland has its own permit for British operators and Italy publishes authorisation rules of its own, which the operator and our team handle, and Geneva needs prior permission for every business aviation movement. A plain London to France flight runs on the air services agreement.

5How do I get from Geneva to Chamonix, and what about Courmayeur and Verbier?

By road Geneva to Chamonix is 88 km and about an hour and a quarter, or up to two hours in heavy traffic, and a helicopter takes about 20 minutes. Verbier is about 59 km from Chamonix, around an hour over the Col de la Forclaz, and Sion is the nearest airport for it. Courmayeur lies on the other side of the 11.6 km Mont Blanc tunnel, which is sometimes closed in both directions for works, so for the Italian side we usually fly to Aosta, 34 km from Courmayeur, or check the tunnel dates before choosing Geneva.

6Can I take my dog to Chamonix on a private jet?

Yes. The dog normally travels in the cabin with you, and an EU country such as France or Italy asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days before travel, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry. A British pet passport cannot be used. Switzerland has its own rules for a dog landing at Geneva. France does not ask for a tapeworm treatment on the way in, but a dog needs one from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment.
