Private Jet from London Farnborough to Chambery

Private Jets UK flies the Farnborough to Chambery route for one reason, and the reason wears ski boots. CMF sits closer to the Tarentaise resorts than any other jet-capable airport, which makes it the private aviation door to Courchevel, Meribel, Val Thorens and Val d'Isere from December to April. It is also a proper mountain airport: a single 2,020 m runway between two massifs, an approach over Lac du Bourget that many operators restrict to specifically qualified captains, winter hours with a hard 21:00 stop, and Saturdays that fill to the last parking stand. None of this is a problem. All of it is planning, and planning is what you pay a broker for. The flight from Farnborough takes from 1 h 40 min nonstop.

Farnborough to Chambery: prices and flight time by aircraft class

The 2,020 m runway takes every business jet class without drama; in winter it handles 737-size ski charters daily. What actually drives the class choice here is luggage: skis, boot bags and a week's winter kit fill a light jet's hold with four people aboard, so families tend to sit better in a midsize. Realistic ski-season starting prices:

Aircraft class Flight time Price, one way
Light jet (Phenom 300, Citation CJ4) 1 h 45 min from £8,300 (~9,800 €)
Midsize jet (Citation XLS+, Learjet 60XR) 1 h 40 min from £10,300 (~12,200 €)
Super-midsize (Challenger 350, Praetor 600) 1 h 35 min from £11,900 (~14,100 €)
Heavy jet (Challenger 605, Falcon 900LX) 1 h 30 min from £13,900 (~16,400 €)

Peak Saturdays carry a premium and reward early booking. Midweek arrivals dodge both the premium and the queues, and spring dates can undercut these figures substantially. Empty legs exist on this corridor too, though in high season they vanish within hours of appearing. Timing is everything.

Flying into a mountain airport: what Chambery demands

Chambery rewards respect. Four things our brokers plan around on every winter booking:

A genuine mountain approach

The arrival threads between ridges and descends over Lac du Bourget, and many operators require their captains to hold a specific qualification for this airport before flying it. This is not bureaucracy for its own sake; it is why we match aircraft to crews who fly Chambery regularly, not occasionally.

The 07:30 - 21:00 winter window

In season the airport runs seven days a week, 07:30 to 21:00, with no extensions granted. The return leg is planned around that hard stop, and the last comfortable departure for Farnborough leaves around 19:30 local. Miss the window and the trip becomes a hotel night.

Saturdays are a contest

Chambery lives on winter Saturdays, when half the Alps changes over and the ramp fills with ski charters. Parking is scarce, so most jets drop passengers and reposition to Lyon or Geneva until pickup. Booked two to three weeks out, all of this is invisible to you.

Weather has a vote

Snow, fog off the lake and mountain winds occasionally close the approach. The alternates are Lyon and Geneva, both about 100 km away, and Grenoble covers the southern resorts. We watch the forecast from 48 hours out and pre-plan the road transfer, so a diversion costs an hour, not a day.

Chambery Savoie Mont Blanc Airport (CMF) at a glance
ICAO / IATA LFLB / CMF
Runway 18/36, 2,020 m x 45 m, taking everything from turboprops to heavy jets and 737-size ski charters
Elevation around 770 ft, between the Bauges and Chartreuse massifs at the foot of Lac du Bourget
Winter hours 07:30-21:00 daily in season, with no extensions; off season roughly 08:00-18:00 with quieter weekends
Business aviation terminal a dedicated private jet terminal of about 400 sqm with lounge, catering and limousine coordination; helicopters connect from the same ramp
Customs on site through the winter season; outside it, arranged on request in advance
Fire category level 2 as standard, raised to 6 on request, which is one more reason larger jets are booked ahead rather than same-day
Local time CET, one hour ahead of the UK

From the ramp to the slopes: resort transfer times

The whole point of Chambery is what happens after landing. Road times to the main resorts, outside the Saturday peaks:

Chambery - Meribel~1 h 30 min by car
Chambery - Courchevel~1 h 40 min by car
Chambery - La Plagne~1 h 45 min by car
Chambery - Val Thorens~1 h 50 min by car
Chambery - Les Arcs~1 h 50 min by car
Chambery - Val d'Isere~2 h by car

The helicopter shortcut: Courchevel is about 20 minutes from Chambery by rotary, booked as one itinerary with bags moving ramp to ramp. As for landing a jet at the Courchevel altiport itself, its 537 m sloping strip is reserved for specially certified light aircraft and helicopters, which is exactly why the Chambery-plus-helicopter pattern exists. On peak Saturdays it also skips the Tarentaise traffic jams, which can add an hour to every road time above.

The winter calendar at Chambery

Mid-December
Resort opening weeks. Demand builds fast toward the holidays; the first heavy Saturdays of the season.
New Year
The tightest week of all. Slots, parking and helicopters sell out first; book before the December rush, not during it.
February
UK and French school holidays overlap for most of the month, and every Saturday runs at capacity. Two to three weeks' notice is the working minimum.
Late March - April
Spring snow and Easter. Demand softens, prices ease, and Chambery becomes pleasantly simple again before the airport winds down to summer hours.

A changeover Saturday, hour by hour

The classic booking on this route is the week in the mountains, bracketed by two Saturday flights. The outbound day runs like this:

07:30
Wheels up at Farnborough with the ski bags in the hold. Breakfast served over the Channel.
10:15 local
Land at Chambery (09:15 UK time). Customs at the private terminal takes minutes; the driver or the helicopter is waiting on the ramp.
10:45
Away toward the mountains. By road, Meribel for a late morning arrival; by helicopter, Courchevel before 11:15.
12:30
Checked in, boots on, first lift after lunch. Meanwhile the jet has repositioned to Lyon, out of the Saturday scrum.
Following Saturday
The same aircraft returns for pickup; a 17:00 departure from Chambery lands you at Farnborough around 17:45 UK time, bags and all.

When Chambery is not the answer

Three airports share the Alpine workload, and in some weeks one of them beats CMF on price or reliability:

GVA
Geneva. About 100 km north. The all-weather heavyweight with a 3,900 m runway and its own French Sector for onward travel into France. Slot-coordinated and equally busy on ski Saturdays, but far harder to close with weather.
LYS
Lyon. Roughly 100 km west, with generous hours and space. The airport Chambery jets reposition to, and a solid arrival option in its own right when the forecast over the lake looks doubtful.
GNB
Grenoble. An hour southwest of the Tarentaise and the natural door to the southern resorts, Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Winter-Saturday busy in its own right, quieter the rest of the week.

We price the alternates against Chambery as standard in season. The answer moves with the forecast, the day of the week and where exactly the chalet is; sometimes the smart route changes on the Thursday before you fly.

On the Farnborough side everything is as easy as UK private aviation gets: a single award-winning terminal, your car at the steps, and ski bags loaded while you finish your coffee. The full picture of slots, operating hours and the airport itself is on our Farnborough Airport private jet charter page.
