Types of aircraft available for private charter

Business aviation covers a wide range of aircraft types, from small turboprops that can land on grass strips to wide-body VIP airliners configured for intercontinental travel. Here is a practical overview of the main categories:

  • Turboprops. Single or twin-engine propeller aircraft capable of operating from short grass and gravel strips unavailable to jets. Typical capacity is 4 to 9 passengers; range is 600 to 1,500 nm. Common examples include the Pilatus PC-12 and Beechcraft King Air 350. Useful for island-hopping, Scottish Highland strips and destinations where runway length is the constraint;
  • Very Light Jets (VLJ). The entry point to jet charter - 3 to 4 passengers, stand-up cabin height in some models, range of 1,000 to 1,500 nm. The Embraer Phenom 100EX and Cessna Citation Mustang are the most common. Fastest and most cost-effective option for pairs on short UK and European hops;
  • Light Jets. 5 to 8 passengers, full stand-up cabin, enclosed lavatory, 1,500 to 2,500 nm range at cruise speeds around 450 to 464 kt. The Phenom 300E and Cessna Citation CJ3 are the most frequently chartered in this class. Cover most European routes non-stop from any UK airport;
  • Midsize Jets. 7 to 9 passengers, flat-floor cabins on newer models, range of 2,500 to 3,500 nm. The Citation XLS+ and Praetor 500 are typical examples. Comfortable for medium-haul European routes; the Praetor 500 reaches Dubai non-stop from London;
  • Super-Midsize Jets. 8 to 12 passengers, stand-up flat-floor cabins, range of 3,400 to 4,000+ nm. The Challenger 3500 and Praetor 600 sit in this category. The Praetor 600 is the only super-midsize that covers London to New York non-stop;
  • Large-Cabin Jets. 10 to 16 passengers, separate zones for work, dining and rest, full-size baggage access in flight, range of 4,000 to 7,700 nm. The Challenger 650, Legacy 650, Falcon 6X and Global 7500 are all large-cabin aircraft. The right choice for long-haul travel with larger groups where cabin comfort on arrival matters;
  • VIP Airliners. Converted narrow-body or wide-body commercial aircraft - Boeing BBJ, Airbus ACJ - fitted with bespoke interiors. Capacity of 18 to 50+ passengers; intercontinental range. Used for head-of-state travel, large corporate groups and situations where a standard large-cabin jet is simply not large enough.

arranging a flight by private plane

Whatever the aircraft type, private jet charter is used for a consistent set of reasons:

  • Schedule control. The flight departs when you are ready, follows the route you need, and can be adjusted - within reason - if your plans change. There are no fixed departure windows and no connections to make;
  • Security and privacy. Every aircraft in our network is operated by an AOC-certified operator and inspected before each departure. The passenger manifest is exactly who you specify. What happens in the cabin stays there;
  • Speed to departure. For genuine emergencies, we can have an aircraft ready in 2 to 4 hours from initial request, provided suitable aircraft are positioned nearby;
  • Crew quality. Our operator network holds current EASA certification and maintains crew to commercial airline training standards. We do not work with operators who cannot demonstrate a current, clean safety record;
  • Full cabin at your disposal. The aircraft is yours for the duration of the flight. Catering, seating configuration, in-flight connectivity and ground arrangements are all discussed in advance. The number of passengers can be adjusted up to the aircraft's certified maximum;
  • Airport flexibility. Private jets can use several hundred UK and European airports that scheduled airlines cannot. London City, Biggin Hill, Farnborough, Oxford and dozens of regional strips are all options depending on the aircraft type.

Planning a private jet trip is straightforward once you know what you need. We handle every aspect - aircraft sourcing, crew, flight planning, ground handling, permits and catering - so the only thing a passenger needs to do is arrive at the airport on time.

What goes into the price

Private jet charter pricing is calculated per-flight rather than per-seat, which is why the economics change significantly once a group reaches four or more passengers. The main cost components are:

  1. Aircraft hire and fuel - typically around 60 to 70% of the total, depending on route length and fuel prices at the departure and arrival airports;
  2. Air navigation and overflight fees - charged by each country's ANSP for use of its airspace;
  3. Crew costs - pilot salaries, overnight accommodation if required, and subsistence;
  4. Airport and handling fees - landing fees, parking, ground handling at the FBO;
  5. Any ferry flight cost - if the aircraft is positioning from another base to your departure airport.

Additional items quoted separately include bespoke catering, ground transfers, de-icing in winter conditions and Air Passenger Duty (from April 2026: £142 per passenger on short-haul routes, £1,141 per passenger on long-haul, applicable to jets over 20 tonnes MTOW). Every quote from Private Jets UK is fully itemised so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

Indicative hourly rates by aircraft type:

  • Large jet (Legacy 600 class) - £4,900 to £5,800 per flight hour;
  • Business liners (BBJ, ACJ) - from £10,300 per flight hour;
  • Light jet - £2,100 to £3,000 per flight hour;
  • Turboprops - from £850 per flight hour;
  • Long-range jets (Global 5000, Gulfstream G550, Falcon 7X class) - £5,800 to £8,800 per flight hour.

These figures are indicative starting points. The actual rate for a specific aircraft on a specific date depends on operator positioning, sector length and current market availability.

Online Calculator

If you want a quick estimate of the cost of a private jet flight, use our online calculator. Fill in the fields - including any preference for a specific aircraft model - and we will send the calculation to your email or messenger. Please fill in your contact details carefully so we can get the figures back to you promptly.

All our calculations are fully transparent. After receiving your request, we will prepare a detailed quote - with costs and the final price clearly broken down. The exact price is agreed in advance and written into the contract, so you know what you are paying before the flight is confirmed.

How a private jet booking works

From first contact to boarding, a private jet booking moves through four stages:

  1. Planning. We process your request, select the most suitable aircraft from our network, and resolve any regulatory and routing requirements. This typically takes 15 to 40 minutes for European flights and up to a few hours for complex intercontinental itineraries with overflight permits;
  2. Contract. The charter agreement specifies the route, schedule, aircraft, price and obligations of both parties. It is issued in two copies - one for you, one for us. Payment can be made by bank transfer, card or other arrangement that suits you;
  3. Flight preparation. We coordinate slot allocation, submit departure and landing notices to the relevant aviation authorities, and arrange the FBO and ground handling at both ends. Catering, ground transfers and any special requirements are confirmed at this stage;
  4. Departure. Once the contract is signed, you simply arrive at the airport at the agreed time. There are no queues, no standard check-in procedures and no shared terminals - private jets use dedicated FBO facilities at most airports.

If needed, we can arrange airport transfers on arrival, hotel bookings and accommodation - these are handled as part of the overall service rather than as separate referrals.

5 main stages:

  • Sending an application

  • Clarification of details and search for options

  • Preparation and coordination of optimal options

  • Registration of documents. Payment of the invoice.

  • Departure on the route.

Jet Sharing and Empty Legs

Not every private jet flight needs to be a full charter. Two options make private aviation more accessible to clients with flexibility on timing or group composition.

Jet Sharing means booking seats on a private jet alongside other passengers, splitting the total flight cost proportionally rather than paying for the whole aircraft. It suits groups of colleagues, friends or families travelling together on the same route - and in some cases we can match you with other passengers heading the same direction to reduce the per-person cost further. Most popular European destinations are available year-round; some seasonal routes (ski resorts, Mediterranean islands) operate on a more limited schedule.

Empty Legs are the repositioning sectors that arise when a client charters a jet one-way and the aircraft needs to return to base empty. These flights are typically offered at 50 to 75% below standard charter rates. The constraint is that the route and timing are fixed - if the originating charter changes, the empty leg may be cancelled at short notice. For clients who genuinely have schedule flexibility, empty legs are among the most cost-effective ways to fly privately. We monitor our network for relevant empty legs and include them alongside standard quotes when available.

Private jet vs business class

The practical differences between chartering a private jet and flying business class are straightforward, and most of them favour private.

Chartering a private jet, compared to flying business class, means:

  • Your full baggage allowance travels with you - no weight limits, no checked bag fees;
  • Check-in takes minutes through a dedicated FBO, with no queues;
  • You wait in a private lounge, not a shared terminal;
  • Pets travel in the cabin with you, not in the hold;
  • No other passengers - the manifest is exactly who you specify.

Privacy is also a practical consideration: a private jet is not a shared environment. No one outside your party knows you are on board, who is travelling with you, or where you are going.

Additional services

Traveling on a rented business jet is convenient, fast, and comfortable. You can further improve flight conditions and safety in the sky by ordering a number of additional services, such as:

  1. Catering - individual meals on board. The passenger can tell us the wishes for the menu, and we will fully fulfill them;
  2. Internet - we organise a stable connection throughout the flight;
  3. Comprehensive service in VIP halls;
  4. Transfer at any airport on the type of transport that suits the passenger - a car, a helicopter, a yacht;
  5. Booking hotels and luxury accommodation on the islands and with private property owners;
  6. De-icing treatment before winter departures.

Additional requests are discussed separately and are also prescribed in the contract. Each client of our company can count on complete anonymity and on the help of a personal manager at all stages of the organisation of the flight.

How to pay for a flight and refund money for a failed flight

Payment for the aircraft lease is carried out after the signing of the contract. You can deposit cash or make a wire transfer. In some situations, an invoice is more convenient, but in any case, our company allows the client to choose the payment method that is more profitable for him/her.

If the scheduled flight is canceled at the client's request, the funds won't be returned in full. This is quite understandable since certain costs for the organisation of the flight were already on the part of the air broker. However, our company tries to make sure that the client loses as little as possible. In those situations, when the lease is canceled due to our fault, which fortunately happens extremely rarely, the funds are returned in full.

You can find out all the conditions for renting business jets by phone or by sending a request to our company's email.

Our team

We hire only the best specialists who are well-versed in all aspects of business aviation. 33 professionals, working in Private Jets UK and "Leie privatfly", arrange the helicopter and private jet charter flights.

Each client is assigned a personal air broker who undertakes to:

  • to answer all questions related to the choice of private jet, optimisation of the route, selection of staff, catering, security and meeting at the airport and quickly address all organisational problems;
  • to provide the highest level of service and pay attention to the smallest details.

Our employees work all over the world, so they know many languages. The contract is usually issued in English (however, if necessary, we can translate it into any other language). You can always contact our managers who will help you solve the tasks of any complexity. After all, our goal is to make you feel safe and comfortable on board.

Every aircraft and operator arranged through Private Jets UK operates under a valid Air Operator Certificate (AOC) issued by EASA or an equivalent national civil aviation authority. We do not work with operators who cannot demonstrate current certification and full regulatory compliance.

  • AOC-certified operators only. All aircraft in our network are operated by companies holding a current Air Operator Certificate. We verify operator certification as a standard part of every booking.
  • EASA-compliant operations. All European flights arranged through our network comply with European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations governing commercial air operations.
  • 15+ years of operator relationships. Our network of 400+ operators has been built and vetted over more than 15 years of active brokerage. We work with operators whose safety record and service standards we know from direct experience.
  • Transparent pricing, written contracts. Every charter is confirmed in a written contract before departure. The price agreed is the price you pay - no post-booking adjustments.
  • GDPR-compliant data handling. All client data is processed in accordance with UK GDPR. We do not share passenger information with third parties beyond what is required for the operation of your flight.

If you have specific questions about the certification or safety record of an aircraft or operator for your booking, our consultants will provide full documentation on request.

What our clients say

We protect the privacy of all clients. The reviews below reflect real experiences; names and identifying details have been changed in accordance with our confidentiality policy.

"We needed to fly a team of nine from London to Geneva for a board meeting with less than 24 hours notice. Private Jets UK sourced a Challenger 300 from a nearby operator, handled all the paperwork and had us airborne by 07:30 the following morning. We were in our first meeting by 10:15. I have since used them four more times and the level of service has been consistent throughout."

R.M. - Managing Director, financial services firm, London

★★★★★

"We fly to Monaco every year for the Grand Prix and have tried several brokers over the years. Private Jets UK is the only one that proactively books the helicopter connection from Nice alongside the jet without us having to ask. That detail - coordinating both legs as a single booking - saves us considerable stress during what is already a very busy week. The consultant we work with knows our preferences and needs no briefing each time."

A.C. - Private client, Edinburgh

★★★★★

"I travel frequently between the UK and Germany for business and have been using Private Jets UK for corporate charters for three years. What I value most is the pricing transparency - every quote is fully itemised so I can present it to our finance team without any ambiguity. The aircraft are always clean, on time and properly crewed. A reliable and professional service."

T.H. - Operations Director, manufacturing group, Birmingham

★★★★★

"We arranged a family trip to Santorini for ten people including two dogs. The team handled the EU Animal Health Certificate documentation for both animals, advised us on the tapeworm treatment timing and arranged a pet-friendly transfer at the other end. Everything went smoothly and both dogs were completely comfortable in the cabin for the entire flight. I would not use anyone else for a trip involving our pets."

S.W. - Private client, Manchester

★★★★★

"I contacted Private Jets UK at 11pm on a Sunday evening needing a flight to Dubai the following Tuesday for a last-minute deal signing. I received three aircraft options with full pricing by midnight and had the contract confirmed by Monday morning. The Global 6000 they arranged was exactly as described, the crew were excellent and the flight was completely smooth. That kind of responsiveness is what separates a genuinely good broker from the rest."

D.K. - Chief Executive, investment group, London
