Private jet charter in Puerto del Rosario

A light jet that leaves the south of England after breakfast is on the ground at Fuerteventura before lunch by the island clock, and that one fact explains why people who fly private use the island for a long weekend as readily as for a fortnight. Private Jets UK plans every Puerto del Rosario charter around the facts of a single airport: its opening hours, the slot that a coordinated field asks for, the handler that each jet has to hire and the stand it is given. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. The airport lies about 5 km south-west of Puerto del Rosario, a working capital and ferry port, and almost nobody flies in for the town itself. They come for what lies 7 to 85 km away: the golf and the marina of Caleta de Fuste, the dunes of Corralejo and the boat to Lobos, the old capital of Betancuria in the hills, and the long, windy beaches of Jandía in the south with the wild coast of Cofete behind them. This page covers the island and its airport, and the neighbouring islands only as far as a Fuerteventura trip needs them.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter in Puerto del Rosario depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Farnborough, an Embraer Phenom 300E and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

Flight time from London to Puerto del Rosario airport

A Phenom 300E flies from Farnborough to Fuerteventura in 3 h 55 min, and nobody has to touch a watch: the Canary Islands keep UTC in winter and UTC plus one hour in summer, the same arrangement as Britain. The fields we use lie 1,515 to 1,780 nautical miles from the island, which is a long sector for a light jet and a comfortable one for a midsize. From Scotland and the north-east of England we move up a cabin size. The table gives the flying time from each field.

Breakfast in England, lunch on the island

Take off from a London field at seven and you touch down around eleven, and the clock on the island shows the same time as the one you left. The airport is only 5 km from Puerto del Rosario, but the beaches are further: Caleta de Fuste is about 7 km away, Corralejo roughly 40 km, El Cotillo 45 km, Costa Calma 65 km and Morro Jable 85 km, which a private car covers in about 10 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, an hour and an hour and a quarter. A same-day return is possible on paper, yet it means eight hours in the air for a lunch, and the airport closes at 23:00 local time. Most guests stay two nights at the least.

How the choice of cabin usually goes

– Two to four people with a week of beach luggage: the Phenom 300E is the right place to start, and the honest price is £19,750 from Farnborough. A midsize cabin on the same sector adds about £4,800 one way;

– Five or six people, golf clubs, kite bags, a pushchair or a dog crate: the discussion moves from price to hold space and fuel. Boards and kite bags are long and awkward, so we ask for the dimensions and quote a midsize beside the light jet;

– Eight or more, a winter flight with a strong headwind, or a trip that carries on to Madeira, Madrid or across the Atlantic: a super-midsize or a large cabin, priced as one booking from the first take-off to the last.

Can a light jet fly it nonstop?

– On paper, yes. The London fields sit 1,552 to 1,592 nautical miles away, and the published ranges with four passengers and reserves in still air are 2,010 nm for the Phenom 300E, 1,927 nm for the Citation CJ4 Gen2 and 1,825 nm for the CJ3+;

– In practice the margin is thinner than the brochure. The island sits at the end of the sector, the nearest alternate, Lanzarote, is only 34 nautical miles away, and a full cabin with winter fuel for a diversion takes a good bite out of the stated range. The dust haze called calima can also cut visibility sharply, and a crew plans for that;

– We therefore ask for the passenger and baggage count in the first message and agree the fuel plan with the operator before any price leaves our office. From Scotland and the north-east a larger aircraft is the standard quote.

At this distance the hours in the air make up most of the bill, so the class of aircraft moves the price more than the choice of airfield does. The same one-way trip from Biggin Hill costs £19,950 in a Phenom 300E, £24,800 in a Citation XLS+, £30,700 in a Challenger 350 and £43,650 in a Gulfstream G450. Landing and handling charges, and a night-stop for the crew when the aircraft stays, come on top in the written offer.

We can arrange the flights from any cities in the UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and European countries. Due to a large database of available business jets, we can help you find an optimal jet and crew. Lanzarote: a boat from Corralejo, or a turboprop

Lanzarote lies 34 nautical miles to the north-east, about 40 minutes gate to gate in a Pilatus PC-12. The alternative is the ferry from Corralejo to Playa Blanca, which takes roughly half an hour, sails about 23 times a day between early morning and the evening and carries cars, so a hire car crosses with you. A jet is billed with a minimum charge far above the few minutes it flies, and the sensible choices for a short hop are the ferry for a relaxed party and a turboprop for a party in a hurry. Gran Canaria and Tenerife are further: Naviera Armas sails from the port of Puerto del Rosario to Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but a sea crossing is a far longer affair than the flight, and the flight is the practical answer when time is short.

Before you accept an onward quote from Fuerteventura

– Where the aircraft waits. Stands are limited and the airport is coordinated, so the quote should say whether the jet stays on the island, goes to Lanzarote or Gran Canaria for the stay, or returns to Britain and comes back;

– Whether the legs are one booking. London, Fuerteventura, Funchal and home arranged together cost less than three separate quotes, because crew and aircraft stay with you;

– Which clock applies. The airport shuts at 23:00 local time, so a late connection has to be tested against that hour and not against the departure time you have in mind.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Fuerteventura:

Light jets, for up to four

The class behind most of the cheaper Fuerteventura bookings. The 3,406 m runway is no obstacle to any of these aircraft; what we check with the operator is the range with a full cabin and the fuel for a diversion.

Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for families and sports kit

More cabin height, a longer hold and a bigger fuel reserve on the same sector. Surfboards, kite bags, golf clubs and the dog usually travel in this class, and so do the parties from Manchester and Leeds.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For eight or more, for Scotland and the north-east, for winter flights with a headwind forecast, and for journeys that carry on to Madeira or across the ocean instead of turning round.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

Built for the hops to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife at a fraction of a jet's hourly cost. Not the aircraft for the flight from Britain.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain, and not a service to take for granted on the island. A helicopter for a transfer or a coastal loop is arranged on request, with the landing site and the permissions agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. An aircraft for Fuerteventura often starts the day somewhere else, so a quote may name Gran Canaria, the mainland or a London field as its starting point, and the price then includes the positioning. That is normal for an island at the end of a long sector, and it is one more reason to ask early.

Business aviation airports in Puerto del Rosario

One airport takes every private jet that flies to Fuerteventura. The neighbouring islands matter on the day the aircraft has to be somewhere else, and they appear here only to that extent.

Airport What it gives you
Fuerteventura
FUE / GCFV
The only airport on the island and the answer for any trip to Puerto del Rosario. It lies about 5 km south-west of the town at 25 m above sea level and is run by Aena. One runway, 01/19, 3,406 m by 45 m, with an instrument landing system at both ends, fire cover of category 9 and Jet A-1 fuel. A contracted handler is compulsory for jets, and the airport is on the Spanish list of coordinated airports, so a private flight needs an agreed time
Lanzarote
ACE / GCRR
34 nautical miles to the north-east, a single runway of 2,400 m. The nearest alternate and the usual parking place for a jet that cannot wait on the apron at Fuerteventura. Its published hours run two hours later at night, to 01:00 on the island clock, and it is a coordinated airport too
Gran Canaria
LPA / GCLP
90 nautical miles to the south-west, with two parallel runways and published hours that cover the whole day. A longer diversion and a base where the aircraft can wait for a long stay

Four things to settle before a Fuerteventura landing:

Hours, and which clock they use

The Spanish AIP publishes the hours in UTC: 06:00 to 22:00 for the summer period and 07:00 to 23:00 for the winter period. The Canary Islands run on UTC in winter and an hour ahead in summer, so on the island clock the airport is open from 07:00 to 23:00 all year. Customs, immigration, handling and fuelling keep the same hours.

The slot

Fuerteventura appears on the Spanish list of fully coordinated airports, and the exemptions published for such airports cover state, emergency and humanitarian flights, which a business jet is not. We request the arrival and departure times with the booking and obtain the confirmation in writing.

The handler

Contracted handling is compulsory for jets and for flights from outside Schengen, and a flight from Britain is both. The AIP names Aviapartner and Groundforce as ramp agents, with a separate general aviation agent, and we name the one that serves your aircraft in the written offer.

Border and the road in

Britain is outside Schengen and Spain inside it, so passports and customs are handled at the airport. The island sits outside the EU VAT area, which matters for goods. Caleta de Fuste is 7 km from the apron, Corralejo about 40 km and Morro Jable about 85 km.

business aviation

Runway 01/19 and the apron

There is one runway, 01/19, 3,406 m long and 45 m wide, which is more than any business jet needs, yet the numbers deserve a second look. The threshold of 01 is displaced by 1,000 m and that of 19 by 466 m, and the last 1,000 m of 19 cannot be used for take-off. The landing distance is therefore 2,406 m on 01 and 2,940 m on 19. Both ends have a category I instrument landing system. The runway numbers do not match the magnetic headings, which are 005 and 185 degrees, a detail the AIP spells out for crews. Rescue cover is category 9, the airport has no de-icing and no hangar space, and Jet A-1 is the only fuel.

General aviation uses the cargo and general aviation apron, stands 54 to 60, and the AIP asks crews to approach them at the lowest practical taxi speed. Passengers and crew are carried across the apron by vehicle with an authorised handling agent. Jet operators also follow noise procedures designed to keep traffic away from the towns: departures from runway 01 do not turn left before a set fix, those from 19 do not turn right before 5 DME from the beacon, and visual approaches intercept the final at more than 5 DME. None of this troubles a passenger, but crews read it before they accept a time.

Slots, handlers and the hours that matter

The opening hours decide more charters than the runway does. The AIP line carries a prior-permission clause with an hour's notice before closing, but we treat the published hours as the working limit and ask the handler in writing about anything outside them. An arrival that slips past 23:00 on the island clock is a plan for Lanzarote or Gran Canaria, not for Fuerteventura.

The coordinated status is the other point. Spanish rules exempt only state, emergency and humanitarian flights from the need to hold a slot at airports of this level, so the times of a private flight are agreed in advance and then respected. The AIP page for the airport gives no separate general aviation procedure, which is why we do not guess: we obtain the confirmation of the arrival and departure times from the handler before the aircraft leaves Britain.

Handling is compulsory for jets, for passenger flights, for aircraft above 5.75 tonnes and for any flight to or from a country outside Schengen. Aviapartner and Groundforce are listed as ramp agents, and the AIP adds a general aviation agent. Universal Aviation lists the airport among its locations and works there through local supervisors, and we plan with whichever agent the operator knows. Customs, immigration, fuelling and handling all keep the aerodrome hours, and refuelling of an arriving aircraft is permitted only within them. If the arrival fits the window, everything else is on hand.

Border, passport and the tax status of the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and of the European Union, and for passports they lie inside the Schengen area, so the border is at the airport. A British passport holder needs no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, provided the passport was issued less than ten years before arrival and runs for at least three months beyond the planned departure from Schengen. The entry-exit system may ask a first-time visitor for a photograph and fingerprints, at no charge. Cash or travellers' cheques worth about £8,500 or more must be declared.

The special status of the islands is a matter of tax. They belong to the EU customs territory but stand outside the EU VAT and excise area, and a local tax called IGIC takes the place of VAT. For a charter this shows in two places: goods carried on to the mainland or another European country may be checked, and the written offer states which taxes and charges apply to each sector. We check the passenger list and the declaration with the handler before the aircraft leaves Britain. For the way home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure.

From the apron to the dunes

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, about 100 km long and 31 km across at its widest, with a land area of roughly 1,660 square kilometres and some 130,000 residents. It lies about 100 km from the African coast. The climate is a hot desert one: winter days average about 22 degrees Celsius and summer days about 28, the airport records less than 100 mm of rain in a year, and the sun shines close to 3,000 hours. The wind is constant, which is why the island draws surfers and kiters. Every so often a calima, a haze of Saharan dust, lifts the temperature by some ten degrees and cuts visibility to a couple of hundred metres. The island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and its highest point, the Pico de la Zarza at 807 m, stands in the south-west.

Where to stay: hotels, villas and golf resorts

The island has no single centre, and the choice of base decides the trip. Caleta de Fuste is the closest to the airport and the practical choice for golf: the Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach, Golf & Spa Resort, a five-star hotel with 266 rooms, stands next to the Fuerteventura Golf Club. Corralejo in the north has the Secrets Bahía Real, an adults-only five-star resort beside the dunes, and smaller boutique addresses such as the H10 Ocean Dreams. In the south, near Morro Jable, the beachfront Hotel Riu Palace Jandía and the adults-only Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace stand on the long beaches of the peninsula, and guests choose them for the space and the wind.

Villas with private pools are the other half of the market. The rental listings cluster around El Cotillo, El Roque, Lajares, La Oliva and Corralejo, in the north of the island, and some owners charge extra to heat the pool, which in winter is worth asking about. For a family of eight with a dog a villa usually beats two hotel rooms, and the aircraft helps: a midsize or larger cabin takes the luggage a villa week involves. We ask for the villa address before a quote is written, so that the transfer, the arrival time and the stand all agree.

Corralejo: the dunes, Lobos and the boat to Lanzarote

North of the island lies the largest field of dunes in the Canary Islands, a protected natural park of about 2,600 hectares, a strip roughly 2.5 km wide and 10 km long that runs parallel to the coast. The Grandes Playas border it along about 9 km of coast. Motor vehicles are not allowed inside the park. Visitors leave the car at one of the car parks and walk on the marked paths, and several of the beaches have no kiosk, so water and food go in the bag. Corralejo, the town at its edge, is about 40 minutes by road from the airport.

Across the strait, about 2 km from the shore, lies Lobos, an uninhabited islet that is part of the protected area. Boats leave from the harbour at Corralejo, take 15 to 20 minutes, carry foot passengers and bicycles only, and the first sailing is typically around a quarter to ten. The authorities cap visits at 400 people a day in two shifts, and a free permit is obtained in advance from the island council; the guides we read say that landing without one is not possible. The islet has no fresh water, one restaurant near the little harbour, and a rule that dogs may ride the ferry but must stay aboard. In August the numbers have been reported at about three times the cap, which is a reason to choose another month.

Lanzarote is a different kind of crossing. The ferry from Corralejo to Playa Blanca takes about 25 to 35 minutes, sails some 23 times a day and is run by Fred Olsen Express and Líneas Marítimas Romero, and it takes vehicles. A party that has booked a villa on Lanzarote and a week in the dunes can therefore split the stay between the two islands with a hire car on the boat. The same hop by air is 34 nautical miles.

Jandía and Sotavento: sand, wind and the world cup

The south-western peninsula of Jandía is the most dramatic part of the island. A narrow isthmus joins it to the rest, most of it is a nature reserve, and the Pico de la Zarza rises above it. On the south-east side the Sotavento beach runs for about 9 km. At low tide a sand bar 100 to 300 m from the shore closes off a lagoon about 3 km long, shallow, warm and protected from the swell, which is why the schools use it for beginners while the outer water belongs to the experts. The beach is made up of five sections, among them La Barca and Risco del Paso, and windsurfing and kitesurfing schools line it.

The Fuerteventura World Cup is held there at Playa Barca on the Sotavento beach, over about two weeks from the second half of July into the first days of August. The windsurfers sail slalom and freestyle first, and the wing foilers follow for the last days. For a charter it is a busy fortnight in the south: rooms in Costa Calma and Morro Jable are scarce and the roads to the beach fill up. Morro Jable itself, about 85 km from the airport, is the largest settlement in the municipality, with some 7,000 residents.

Cofete and Villa Winter

Cofete, on the western side of the Jandía massif, is a 15 km beach under the Pico de la Zarza, and it is reached by one graded dirt road whose condition changes with the season. A 4x4 is recommended, many hire-car insurers exclude off-road driving so that a tow can fall on the driver, and a 4x4 bus typically runs twice a day from the bus station at Morro Jable and fills early. We book a driver with a suitable vehicle, which turns a rough road into a manageable day out.

Two cautions belong in any plan. The currents and the wind make Cofete unsuitable for swimming, and surfing there is for experts only. And the house on the hill, Villa Winter, built by the German engineer Gustav Winter, carries a thick layer of rumour about submarines and wartime visitors, none of which has been substantiated. We have not confirmed any visiting arrangements, so treat it as a landmark and not as an outing to book. The Roque del Morro on the access road and the rock called El Islote, joined to the beach by a spit of sand, are the better stops for a camera.

Betancuria and the interior

The old capital lies in a fold of the hills about 21 km south-west of Puerto del Rosario. Founded in the early fifteenth century, Betancuria kept the title of island capital until the nineteenth century, and it is now the smallest municipality in the Canary Islands, with about 800 residents. It has the church of Santa María, which replaced one destroyed in a sixteenth-century pirate raid and whose ticket includes a small museum of sacred art, the roofless ruins of the San Buenaventura convent, and an archaeological museum with pre-Hispanic pottery.

The road climbs through volcanic hills, which is the argument for coming by car, and near Betancuria the Mirador de Morro Velosa, a viewpoint designed by César Manrique, looks across the island. The sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña, in the Vega de Río Palmas about 33 km from Puerto del Rosario, holds the island's best-known pilgrimage on the third Saturday of September, and the village of Betancuria has its own fiesta of San Buenaventura in July.

Caleta de Fuste, El Cotillo and a round of golf

Caleta de Fuste is the largest community in the municipality of Antigua and the nearest resort to the airport. A small castle, a martello tower built in the eighteenth century, stands at the harbour, and the bay is a base for sailing and diving. Its golf is the island's main draw: the Fuerteventura Golf Club has 18 holes at par 70 over 6,069 m, three lakes and 67 bunkers, and it has hosted the Spanish Open. The Salinas de Antigua course next door is also 18 holes at par 70, laid out by Manolo Piñero and technical in its water hazards.

El Cotillo, 45 km from the airport on the north-west coast, is the opposite of a resort: a fishing village that grew up around the Puerto del Roque, with a watchtower, the Torre del Tostón, built to guard the coast against pirates and a bay called La Concha with clear water and fine sand. The coast here faces the open Atlantic, and the sea is livelier than on the sheltered side of the island, so it suits a late lunch and a walk better than a long swim. Villa rentals cluster around the village.

Flying to Fuerteventura with a dog or a cat

The Canary Islands are an EU region, so the paperwork is the EU's, and what goes wrong is the date on a certificate rather than the flight. The animal sits in the cabin with you, and on a sector of about four hours most of them simply sleep.

private flight with animals

What Spain asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
  • A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed after the vaccination before it travels;
  • An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
  • No more than five animals per traveller, entering through a travellers' point of entry. Fuerteventura airport is on the Spanish list of those points, served by the animal health office in Las Palmas, and the animal is declared on arrival;
  • For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt. Spain itself does not ask for the treatment on the way in.

What catches owners out on the Fuerteventura run

– The tapeworm window works against you at the end of the stay. A vet on the island has to see the dog between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home, and a departure that moves by a day can move the window out of reach. Book the appointment once the return hour is fixed, and keep the receipt;

– The order of chip and vaccine matters. A vaccination given before the microchip does not count, and the certificate is checked line by line before the flight, not at the terminal;

– Spain has its own rules for potentially dangerous dog breeds, and some are restricted. The wild beaches also have rules of their own: a dog may ride the ferry to Lobos but cannot land there. Tell us the breed in the first message.

Requirements for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are collected on our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and the paperwork on the way home, we confirm both in writing before the flight, and our managers check the position for your dates before a booking is taken.

The Fuerteventura calendar: carnival, pilgrimage, world cup and kites

The island has fewer big events than its neighbours, and the ones that matter for a charter are those that fill the beach resorts or close a road. Choose the week before you choose the aircraft.

Dec to Feb
Winter sun, with days around 22 degrees Celsius and the Christmas and New Year weeks the hardest to book. Aircraft and villas go first, and the airport closes at 23:00 local time throughout
Feb or March
The carnival of Puerto del Rosario, the capital's main festival, held in February or March
July
The fiesta of San Buenaventura in Betancuria, in the hills
Late July to early Aug
The Fuerteventura World Cup at Sotavento: about two weeks of slalom and freestyle for windsurfers, followed by wing foil. Rooms in Costa Calma and Morro Jable are scarce
August
Peak season for families, and the month when Lobos is reported to receive about three times its daily cap. Plan the islet for a quieter month
September
The Virgen de la Peña, on the third Saturday: a pilgrimage to the Vega de Río Palmas, near Betancuria, that brings people from across the island
October
The fiestas of the Rosary in Puerto del Rosario and La Oliva
November
The Kitefest in the Corralejo dunes: seven days in the second week, free to watch, with displays at La Concha beach in El Cotillo on Thursdays

Why a holiday week costs more

Not the flying. The light and midsize fleets are large and Fuerteventura is well within their reach. What tightens is the number of good villas and cars on the island, and the slots and stands at an airport that is coordinated. A booking for the New Year made two weeks ahead can still be done, but it may mean an aircraft positioned from the mainland, and that adds to the price. The same booking made six or eight weeks earlier is simpler and cheaper. Outside the holiday weeks a charter to the island can usually be arranged in a few days.

Ways to bring the Fuerteventura price down

  • Move the dates by a few days where you can. The weeks outside Christmas, New Year and the half-terms are usually calmer;
  • Fly from the west. On the same Phenom 300E the sector from Cardiff is priced about £600 below the one from Biggin Hill, and Southampton and Bristol sit between them;
  • Land inside the airport hours. An arrival that tips past 23:00 on the island clock costs a night at another airport and a second flight in the morning;
  • Decide early whether the aircraft stays. A jet that waits occupies a stand, one that flies home and returns costs two long sectors, and the cheaper answer depends on the length of the stay, so we price both.

Types of flights

Fuerteventura produces a different mix from the Alpine or city destinations we cover. It is a wind-and-sand island with a few good golf courses, and almost everyone arrives to stay, so the airport is a starting point more than a stopover.

  • Winter-sun weeks and family holidays, with a villa near Corralejo or El Cotillo or a resort at Caleta de Fuste, and often a dog on board;
  • Golf parties on the courses at Caleta de Fuste and Jandía, with bags that need a bigger hold;
  • Wind-sports groups for Sotavento and the Corralejo beaches, with kite bags and boards, and the world-cup fortnight in July;
  • Long weekends of dunes, Lobos, Betancuria and a drive to Cofete;
  • Crossings to Lanzarote that combine a flight in with the ferry out from Corralejo;
  • Longer itineraries that carry on to Madeira, the mainland or across the Atlantic.

The long weekend deserves a closer look. A Friday departure from Farnborough lands on Fuerteventura before lunch, and the Monday return reaches the English side in the early evening. Two nights fit the flight better than one, since one night leaves little more than dinner. A stay of several days brings back the question of the stand, and we quote it both ways: aircraft waiting, or aircraft going home and returning.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Fuerteventura generates them because most guests stay for a week, and an aircraft often cannot wait on the apron that long: it leaves empty, or it arrives empty to collect a party.

Where Fuerteventura empty legs come from

– Winter weekends. An aircraft brings a party in, goes home empty, and the return half of the round trip becomes a leg for sale;

– Positioning from the other islands and the mainland. Aircraft based in Gran Canaria, Madrid or Malaga fly to Fuerteventura for a pick-up, and the sector in the other direction is offered;

– Aircraft moving between Britain, the Canaries and Madeira. A jet on a longer itinerary sometimes passes through and sells the hop.

Because this corridor is thinner than the busy European ones, a client who can name a few days rather than one has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag a Fuerteventura match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

A helicopter on Fuerteventura is a tool for the edges of a trip, not a service to count on. We have not found a scheduled tourist helicopter operation on the island, so a flight is arranged on request, with the operator, the landing site and the permissions confirmed before a quote is written.

Airport to Morro Jable
37 nm in a straight line, against about 85 km and an hour and a quarter on the road
about 27 minutes
Jandía and Cofete
the peninsula is a nature reserve, so landing and low flying need agreement first
permission first
Corralejo dunes and Lobos
protected areas where landing is not assumed
permission first
A coastal loop
the dunes and Lobos, or the Jandía coast, seen from the air, depending on the operator and the wind
typically 30 minutes

Before you plan around a helicopter

– A helicopter cannot land wherever it likes. A landing away from an aerodrome needs an agreed site and the landowner's consent, so we check a villa lawn or a hotel pad before the quote is written, and in a protected area the park rules come first;

– Wind sets the schedule. The wind on the island is constant, and a transfer needs a road alternative planned into the same day;

– Where the machine comes from. If nothing is based on the island it flies in from Gran Canaria or Tenerife, and the positioning is a line in the quote.

The machines that suit this ground are the Airbus H125 for scenic work, the wider H130 for villa and hotel transfers, the H135 and the Bell 429 where a twin engine is wanted. We book them alongside the jet so that both crews work to one timetable.

Fuerteventura charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

WINTER SUN · LONG WEEKEND

A couple with a villa near El Cotillo

Farnborough - Puerto del Rosario, Phenom 300E, about 3 h 55 min · 2 pax

A Friday departure, a late lunch in the village and a Monday return. The only fixed point was the 23:00 closing time on the island clock, so we kept the return leg well inside it and booked the car with the flight.

GOLF · A WEEK IN THE SUN

Four friends and their clubs

London Luton - Puerto del Rosario, Citation XLS+, about 4 h 10 min · 4 pax

Four sets of clubs and the luggage of a week did not suit a light jet, so we quoted a midsize beside it. The hotel sat next to the course at Caleta de Fuste, and the airport was close enough for the party to be on the first tee the same afternoon.

WIND SPORTS · THE WORLD CUP FORTNIGHT

Six kitesurfers and their gear

Manchester - Puerto del Rosario, Citation XLS+, about 4 h 20 min · 6 pax

The people fitted comfortably, the kite bags and boards did not, so we asked the operator for the hold dimensions before the price went out. Rooms in the south were scarce in that fortnight, and the aircraft was confirmed well in advance.

FAMILY WEEK · A DOG ON BOARD

Five people and a spaniel for half-term

Southampton - Puerto del Rosario, Citation XLS+, about 4 h 05 min · 5 pax + dog

The Animal Health Certificate had to be dated inside ten days of arrival, and an island vet had to see the dog between 24 and 120 hours before the flight home. We booked both with the aircraft, and the villa took the dog.

THE NEIGHBOURING ISLAND · A SHORT HOP

A day on Lanzarote from a villa in Corralejo

Puerto del Rosario - Lanzarote, Pilatus PC-12, 40 minutes · 6 pax

The party arrived by jet from Britain, stayed in the north of Fuerteventura and flew to Lanzarote in a turboprop for lunch, instead of taking the ferry with the luggage. A single booking for both sectors, with the same crew, came in well below two separate quotes.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY EVENING HOME

A jet already going your way

Puerto del Rosario - London Luton, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 4 h · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window rather than a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday evening departure.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Puerto del Rosario

1How long is a private jet flight from London to Puerto del Rosario?

About 3 hours 55 minutes from Farnborough and about 4 hours from Biggin Hill, London City or Luton in a Phenom 300E, covering roughly 1,552 to 1,592 nautical miles from the London fields. From Manchester allow about 4 hours 20 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow about 4 hours 25 minutes in a Challenger 350. The Canary Islands keep the same time as Britain, so a seven o'clock departure lands around eleven on the island clock.

2How much does a private jet to Puerto del Rosario cost?

From about £19,750 one way on a Phenom 300E out of Farnborough, and £19,950 to £20,200 from the other London fields. From Cardiff the same aircraft is priced from £19,350. A Citation XLS+ from Manchester or Leeds runs £25,850 to £26,400, and from Scotland a Challenger 350 costs £34,150 to £34,450. The New Year week and the half-terms can price above these figures.

3What are the opening hours of Fuerteventura airport for a private jet?

The Spanish AIP publishes them in UTC: 06:00 to 22:00 for the summer period and 07:00 to 23:00 for the winter period. The Canary Islands run on UTC in winter and an hour ahead in summer, so on the island clock the airport is open from 07:00 to 23:00 all year. Customs, immigration, handling and fuelling keep the same hours. The airport is coordinated, handling is compulsory for jets, and we arrange the slot and the handler with the booking.

4Which airport do I use for Puerto del Rosario, and is there an alternative?

Fuerteventura (FUE / GCFV), the only airport on the island, about 5 km south-west of Puerto del Rosario. It has one runway, 01/19, 3,406 m long, with an instrument landing system at both ends. Lanzarote (ACE / GCRR) lies 34 nautical miles to the north-east and is the nearest alternate for a crew, and Gran Canaria (LPA / GCLP) is 90 nautical miles to the south-west.

5Do I need a visa or customs clearance for Fuerteventura?

Britain is outside Schengen and the Canary Islands are inside it, so you clear passport control and customs on arrival. British passport holders need no visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport issued less than ten years before arrival and valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area. A first-time visitor may be asked to register a photograph and fingerprints at the EU entry-exit system, which is free. The islands belong to the EU customs territory but not to the EU VAT area, so goods carried on to the mainland may meet a check. We track the paperwork with the aircraft.

6Can I take my dog to Fuerteventura on a private jet?

Yes. The dog travels in the cabin with you, and Spain asks for a microchip fitted before or with the rabies vaccination, a vaccination given at 12 weeks or older and at least 21 days old, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used. For the return, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arriving back in Britain. Cats are exempt from the treatment. We confirm the entry point and the paperwork in writing before the flight.
