Private jet charter in Interlaken

No jet lands at Interlaken, and a quote that promises one is a quote that will change. The town sits on the flat ground between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau a short train ride to the south, and a charter from the London fields ends at Bern-Belp, about forty-five minutes away by road. Our customers have access to 6,500 jets of all types and configurations available for rent. We will help you choose the best option based on your needs and objectives. Our catalog contains the models from the largest manufacturers: Gulfstream, Dassault, Embraer, Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, Learjet, Cessna, Beechcraft, Pilatus, HondaJet, etc. We have established partnerships with the world's largest airlines and VIP terminals, which means we can offer you favourable flight conditions and a high level of service. Our experts will manage the organization of your flight - starting with paperwork, agreements, etc., and ending with a transfer and meeting at the airport. Our company provides a full range of business aviation and concierge services. Everything else on an Interlaken trip, the cabin, the date and the helicopter, follows from that first choice of gateway.

private jet charter

At your request, the aviation consultants of Private Jets UK will help you choose the jet with the suitable technical parameters (production year, flight hours, and home base). The cost of the private jet charter to Interlaken depends on many factors, such as the model of the business jet, the number of passengers, departure and destination airports, type of flight, duration of parking, additional services, etc. Therefore, we calculate the price of each order individually taking into account your wishes. You can use an online calculator to get an instant charter quote. Please indicate your real contact details to get the final calculation.

You can calculate the cost of your flight in several ways:

  • using an online calculator on the website (however, it shows only the approximate price);
  • via Messenger (WhatsApp or Telegram);
  • by landline or cell phone;
  • via e-mail (jets@private-jets.co.uk).

Please note that the above-mentioned price is indicative only. It is calculated on this basis: a departure from Biggin Hill, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ landing at Bern-Belp, the airport for Interlaken, and two passengers aboard. If you want to get a personal quote, just fill out the online booking form below. Our aviation consultant will make the calculation within 20 minutes, and then contact you to specify the details of the flight.

How long does it take to fly to Interlaken?

There is no flight to Interlaken itself, only to the airport that serves it. From Biggin Hill or London City a light jet needs about one hour twenty minutes to Bern-Belp, and the drive from the apron to the Interlaken lakeshore adds roughly three quarters of an hour. Switzerland keeps Central European time, one hour ahead of Britain. At 411 to 725 nautical miles from the British fields we use, this is a short Alpine sector: a light jet from the south of England, a midsize one from the north. The table gives the flight into Belp from each field.

From the apron to the hotel door

Wheels up from Biggin Hill at seven in the morning and the aircraft is at Belp a little after nine local time. Customs and border control are among the services the airport lists, so the formalities should not eat the morning, and a car can drive onto the apron if the handler has been told in advance. The airport itself puts Interlaken, Grindelwald, Gstaad and Lucerne inside 90 minutes by road, and for Interlaken the usual figure is about 45 minutes over some 51 km. Central London to an Interlaken hotel therefore comes to roughly four hours with the transfers. The deadline waits at the other end of the day: a business jet may not leave Belp after 19:00 local time, which is 18:00 in Britain, so the return flight is planned backwards from it.

Why the jet stops at Belp and not at Interlaken

Interlaken does have a field with a famous name. LSMI is the former Swiss Air Force base on the edge of town, with a tarmac strip of about 1,650 m left from the air-base years, which now hosts a music festival in June. The air force left in the early 2000s, and the federal aviation plan now describes the site as a private heliport and rescue base run by Rega, with further civil use by fixed-wing aircraft waived. For a charter that settles it: helicopters can be discussed, jets cannot.

Light jet or midsize: how the choice usually goes on this route

– Four people with ordinary bags are comfortable in a light jet. Eighty minutes in a CJ3+ or a Phenom is easy, and the difference against a midsize cabin pays for the car, the cog railway and a second night;

– Past four, or when the hold carries ski bags, hiking kit or a family's worth of summer luggage, we quote a midsize cabin beside the light jet so that both figures are on the table. In the Oberland the bags fill the hold before the people fill the seats;

– Belp has a runway of 1,730 m at 510 m above sea level, which suits light and midsize jets and is a matter for the operator with anything bigger. A party that really needs a heavy cabin is planned into Zurich instead, with a longer road transfer added to the quote.

Private jet flights from Interlaken

The departure follows the arrival: the aircraft leaves from Bern-Belp, and anything above 3.5 tonnes has to be airborne by 19:00. From there Sion, Samedan and Lugano are short turboprop hops into other Alpine valleys, Zurich and Geneva are the airports for late departures and big cabins, and Milan, Munich, Paris and Nice are an hour or so in a light jet. The way home to Britain is priced like the way out. Typical one-way prices:

Onward from Interlaken: when the aircraft wins and when the ground does

Sion is 44 nautical miles from Belp, about 30 minutes in a Pilatus PC-12, and the right airport once the programme crosses into Valais and heads for Zermatt. Samedan, for St Moritz and Davos, is 105 nautical miles and about 45 minutes in the same turboprop. Between Interlaken and the big airports the road decides instead. Zurich is 134 km from the town and takes about 1 h 45 min by road or about 2 h 15 min by train, so a late departure from Zurich is a transfer to plan, not an afterthought. Belp is the short drive, and the helicopter is shorter still.

Before you accept an Interlaken quote

– Which airport, and which rule comes with it. Belp needs no slot but shuts to jets at 19:00; Zurich asks for a slot for every instrument flight, requested through a listed handler; Geneva asks for prior permission for general and business aviation, again through the handler. A quote that names an airport and none of this has not been checked;

– Who drives the last 51 km, and when. A car booked from the hotel has to leave early enough for the aircraft to be airborne by 19:00, with the margin for the Bern ring road on a Friday or a Sunday. We put the pick-up time in the quote and not just the flight time;

– Whether the legs are one booking. Belp to Sion to Samedan and home over a week costs less as a single trip, because the aircraft and crew stay with you instead of repositioning between stops.

Prices depending on the type of business jet

We can clearly show the high dependence of the cost of the flight, on the type of aircraft - we have collected approximate data, at the price of 1 flight hour, for various types of business jets:

Private jets are ready to take off

Our database contains over 6,500 business jets (about 3,500 in Europe and 3,000 in the rest of the world) of different configurations and production years. The list of models is constantly updated. Unfortunately, we can't post a full list of available jets on our website due to confidentiality issues. Please contact the managers of the company for more accurate information. We will help you choose a suitable model taking into account your wishes. These are the typical choices for Interlaken:

Light jets, the usual choice for four or five people

A short sector for a small party with ordinary luggage. The 1,730 m runway at Belp suits this class easily, and the money is better spent on the transfer and the hotel than on a cabin that stays half empty.

HondaJet Elite · 5 seatsfrom £1,900/h
Cessna Citation CJ3+ · 7 seatsfrom £2,400/h
Embraer Phenom 300E · 8 seatsfrom £2,600/h
Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen2 · 8 seatsfrom £2,700/h

Midsize, for ski bags and a week in the valleys

The hold fills faster than the seats here: skis in the winter, hiking poles and rain gear in the summer, and whatever comes back from the shops on the Höheweg.

Learjet 75 Liberty · 8 seatsfrom £3,000/h
Cessna Citation XLS+ · 9 seatsfrom £3,100/h
Cessna Citation Latitude · 9 seatsfrom £3,900/h
Embraer Praetor 600 · 9 seatsfrom £3,400/h

Super-midsize and large

For a group that wants to travel as one party or a team that works in the air. The runway length and the 19:00 closing time at Belp are checked with the operator before the quote, and Zurich is the fall-back for the biggest cabins.

Bombardier Challenger 350 · 9 seatsfrom £4,000/h
Bombardier Challenger 605 · 12 seatsfrom £4,350/h
Dassault Falcon 2000LXS · 10 seatsfrom £4,900/h
Gulfstream G450 · 13 seatsfrom £5,800/h

Turboprops

The sensible aircraft for hops out of Belp to Sion, Samedan, Lugano or Zurich, all of them about an hour or less in the air, where a jet saves little time and costs a good deal more.

Pilatus PC-12 NGX · 9 seatsfrom £1,400/h
Beechcraft King Air 350 · 9 seatsfrom £1,650/h

Helicopters

Not for the flight from Britain but for the valleys: Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, a glacier landing or a hotel lawn with no road. Where a machine may land is agreed before the quote.

online private jet directory

This is a small part of what is available. Few business jets are based in this corner of Switzerland, but Zurich, Geneva, Basel and northern Italy are all within about an hour of Belp, so a quote may name one of those cities as the positioning point. That is normal for an Alpine destination, and it is often where the better price comes from.

Business aviation airports for Interlaken

One airport carries almost every Interlaken trip. The others matter when the aircraft is too large or the day runs too late for Belp, or when the programme carries on into Valais. The field in Interlaken itself is on the list so that nobody books it by mistake.

Airport What it gives you
Bern-Belp
BRN / LSZB
The real gateway for Interlaken, about 51 km and 45 minutes away by road. The field lies on the south-eastern edge of the capital at 510 m above sea level, with a single asphalt runway of 1,730 m (14/32) and an instrument approach to runway 14. Customs and border control are listed among its services, and we confirm the hours for your date. The airport company supplies handling, VIP catering, a crew lounge, hotel booking and limousines, fuel comes from BM-Services and Shell, and de-icing is available in winter. There is no slot system, but aircraft and helicopters above 3.5 tonnes may use the runway only from 08:00 to 19:00 local time, every day of the year
Zurich
ZRH / LSZH
Switzerland's main airport, 134 km from Interlaken and about 1 h 45 min by road. The choice for a large cabin, a late departure or a dog that must enter through an approved airport. Every instrument flight needs a slot, obtained through a handling agent from the official list, and Jet Aviation runs the former ExecuJet terminal with a private lounge, customs and immigration, hangars and private ramps
Geneva
GVA / LSGG
The second large alternative, 214 km from Interlaken and about 2 h 20 min by road, so it makes sense only when the programme includes Lake Geneva or a heavy cabin. All general and business aviation flights need prior permission, requested through the handling agent under the Swiss aeronautical information publication
Sion
SIR / LSGS
The jet stop for Valais and Zermatt, in the Rhone valley on the far side of the Alps from Interlaken, with a 2,000 m asphalt runway at 483 m elevation. It is also a fighter base of the Swiss Air Force, with arresting gear at both ends of the runway, so the hours and the parking are confirmed before a quote. It belongs on an Interlaken page only for a trip that goes on from the Oberland to the Valais
Interlaken
LSMI
The former military air base at the edge of town, now a private heliport and Rega rescue base. The federal aviation plan rules out further civil use by fixed-wing aircraft, so no business jet or turboprop is accepted. Helicopter charters are discussed with the operator, and the site is not offered as a public transfer point

Four things to settle before a flight to Interlaken:

The airport and its services

The airport company itself runs business aviation at Belp. Full-service handling, VIP catering, weather briefing, a crew lounge, crew transfers and hotel booking are on offer, along with baggage handling, local limousines and helicopters. A car can be given access to the apron, so the party steps from the aircraft into the vehicle. Fuel is available through BM-Services and Shell, and de-icing is provided in winter.

Hours, slots and permits

There are no slots at Belp, but the hours are firm: aircraft and helicopters above 3.5 tonnes land and take off between 08:00 and 19:00 local time, every day. Lighter aircraft can take off until 20:00 and land until 21:00. A British operator on a charter also typically needs Swiss permission. Individual permits cover up to three flights and are requested at least 72 hours before the first one, and longer chains of flights need an operating permit filed 30 days ahead. We track both with the aircraft paperwork.

Border and passport

Britain stands outside Schengen and Switzerland inside it, so passports are checked when you land. Switzerland is not in the EU either and keeps its own customs rules, which means goods that may be banned, taxed or dutiable must be declared. A British passport holder needs no visa for 90 days in any 180, provided the passport is under ten years old and valid for three months after departure. First-time arrivals may be asked for a photograph and fingerprints, which cost nothing.

Road, rail and late nights

The drive from Belp to Interlaken takes about 45 minutes, and a direct train from Bern to Interlaken Ost takes about 54 minutes. Both need a margin on a Friday afternoon. Give us the hotel as well as the flight, because a driver told only the airport can wait at the wrong door. Plan the last departure for the afternoon: a jet cannot leave Belp after 19:00, so a long dinner means an early flight home or a night in Interlaken for the aircraft and crew, priced into the quote from the start.

business aviation

Border, passport and Swiss customs

A flight from Britain meets two systems at once. Passport control follows the Schengen rules, while customs follows Swiss ones, since Switzerland is not in the EU customs area. The border officers may ask for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, an onward ticket and enough money for the stay, and the formalities for a private flight are done at Belp itself. Keep receipts for anything bought in Switzerland that could attract tax or duty on the way back, and remember that the General Aviation Report for the return to Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure. If the party includes passengers on other passports, tell us in the first message, because the check on arrival and the permission to land are not the same for every nationality.

From the apron to the Höheweg

Interlaken is a small town with a very large catchment. It has fewer than six thousand residents of its own and about 23,000 in the surrounding area, and the name means between the lakes. Belp is south-east of the capital, so the road to the Oberland starts almost at the airport gate and the mountains come into view within the half hour. These are the distances a driver and a helicopter pilot work with:

Belp airport to Interlaken by road
about 51 km, with a margin for the Bern ring road on Fridays and Sundays
about 45 minutes
Bern to Interlaken Ost by rail
the direct train from the capital to the eastern station of the town
about 54 minutes
Belp to Interlaken by helicopter
about 37 km in a straight line; the landing site is agreed with the operator
about 15 minutes
Interlaken to Zurich airport
134 km by road; by train about 2 h 15 min on the direct services
about 1 h 45 min
Interlaken to Geneva airport
214 km by road, 2 h 56 min by train
about 2 h 20 min
Interlaken Ost to the Jungfraujoch
by rail through Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, about 1 h 30 min if the Eiger Express gondola replaces part of the train
about 2 h 10 min

Interlaken, Unterseen and the two lakes

The Höheweg is the promenade that joins the town's two railway stations, with the grand hotels strung along it and the Jungfrau in the view at the far end. The Victoria-Jungfrau is the grand house on the promenade, a five-star hotel and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The medieval town that people call the old town is across the Aare in Unterseen, founded under a charter from a Habsburg king, with a stronghold beside the bridge over the Aare, and still protected as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. It is compact and easy to cover on foot. Harder Kulm, 1,321 m, stands just north of the town and has a railway to the top.

The lakes are the other half of the setting. Lake Thun is 17.5 km long and Lake Brienz about 14 km, joined by the Aare, which flows from one to the other, and passenger ships have run on them since the first half of the nineteenth century, today under the railway company BLS. The paddle steamer Blümlisalp is one of ten ships on Lake Thun. On Lake Brienz the ships call at the landing for Giessbach Falls and its funicular, and a short navigable stretch of the Aare connects them to Interlaken Ost. A lake afternoon is the usual way to fill the day when cloud sits on the Jungfrau.

Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn and the car-free villages

Most private clients come to Interlaken for what lies south of it. Cog railways and cable cars lift visitors out of two valleys, and the choice of base decides how the luggage travels.

Jungfraujoch, 3,454 m
Europe's highest railway station; the cog railway runs about 9 km, roughly 7 km of it inside the mountain; the Sphinx platform, the Ice Palace and the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps at 23 km; seat reservations are mandatory from May to August
2 h 10 min by rail from Interlaken
Grindelwald, 1,034 m
reached by the Bernese Oberland Railway; the Eiger Express and the Männlichen gondola both start at the Grindelwald Terminal
by rail or road
Wengen, 1,274 m
one of very few car-free resort villages in Europe; the railway climbs from Lauterbrunnen, and the Lauberhorn races have been run here for generations
by rail from Lauterbrunnen
Mürren, 1,638 m
closed to traffic and reached by cable car and narrow-gauge railway from Lauterbrunnen, or by cable car from Stechelberg
by cable car
Schilthorn, 2,970 m
the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant turns through 360 degrees in 45 minutes, and the views take in the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; the restaurant appeared in a James Bond film
cable car from Mürren
Lauterbrunnen
a steep valley with cliff walls up to 1,000 m; the Staubbach Falls drop about 297 m, the highest free-falling waterfall in Switzerland, and the Trümmelbach Falls are 3 km from the village by bus
by rail from Interlaken Ost

The practical point is luggage. No road reaches Wengen or Mürren, so everything the hold carried continues by train or cable car, or by helicopter. We ask the hotel how the bags are handled before the aircraft is booked, and for a party with a lot of ski kit we plan the transfer as a single job rather than three.

Flying to Interlaken with a dog or a cat

A dog or a cat can fly in the cabin beside you on the Interlaken run, and the flight is the easy part. The difficulty is the entry check, because Switzerland is outside the EU and applies its own animal rules.

private flight with animals

What Switzerland asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

  • An ISO microchip, implanted before the rabies shot. If the order is reversed the vaccination does not count;
  • A rabies vaccination that is in force: the first dose is allowed from 12 weeks of age and becomes valid 21 days later;
  • A Swiss or EU pet passport if the animal already has one. Without it, an official veterinary certificate from the country of departure, and we confirm in writing which document Switzerland takes for a British animal;
  • A check of the animal at the red customs exit, which is compulsory. An animal arriving with incomplete papers can be turned away;
  • Entry through an approved airport. For animals flown in with their owner the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office lists Basel, Geneva and Zurich, and Bern is not among them;
  • On the way home, a dog needs a tapeworm treatment from a vet 24 to 120 hours before it lands in Britain, entered with product, date and time. Cats are exempt. A pet travel document and a declaration go with the animal, with up to five animals per traveller.

Where pet trips to Interlaken go wrong

– The airport for the animal. The plan is built around Belp, yet the check on the dog may have to take place at Zurich, 134 km and about 1 h 45 min from Interlaken, and then the whole route moves. Whether Belp can receive a pet that arrives by private jet is settled with the authorities in writing, before the quote and not at the apron;

– The tapeworm window, the 19:00 closing time and the mountain weather. The treatment must land inside the 24 to 120 hours before touchdown in Britain, and a departure that slips a day because of low cloud can push the window out of reach. We book the Swiss vet for the second half of the stay;

– The chip and the vaccine in the wrong order. That mistake cannot be repaired at the airport, which is why we read the documents line by line before the flight.

Rules for cats, ferrets, birds and anything less usual are in our flying with pets guide. For the entry point and for the papers on the way home we give you written confirmation before the flight, and an animal that reaches Britain without meeting the rules can face quarantine of up to four months.

Interlaken has a clear winter and a clear summer, and a few dates that sell out hotels and cars long before they sell out aircraft. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing a cabin.

Mid-January
The Lauberhorn ski races in Wengen, usually run in mid-January, the week before the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel. The downhill is the longest on the World Cup circuit, at over four kilometres, and about 30,000 spectators come each year. Rooms in Wengen go first, and the aircraft is the easy part
January
The Inferno race in Mürren, which has run since the late 1920s and sends up to 1,800 amateur skiers from the Schilthorn down to Lauterbrunnen. Mürren is also the home of the Kandahar Ski Club, founded by British skiers, so the village has a long British following
December to April
The ski season in the Jungfrau Ski Region, with about 200 km of runs in three areas: Grindelwald-First, Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen-Wengen and Mürren-Schilthorn. The areas open and close on different dates, with Mürren-Schilthorn running longest in a typical season and Grindelwald-First shortest. The Christmas and New Year weeks and the school holidays are the heaviest
May to August
Summer high season, when the Jungfraujoch trains need reserved seats and the valleys are at their busiest. Weather decides the day more than any event does, so reserve the Jungfraujoch seats as soon as the date is fixed and keep a lake afternoon in reserve
June
The Greenfield Festival, three days of rock and electronic music on the former air base in Interlaken, a short walk from the Bönigen lido and Lake Brienz. Rooms in town and along the lakeshore are the first constraint, well ahead of the aircraft
September
The Jungfrau Marathon, which starts in Interlaken and climbs to a finish at Eigergletscher at 2,320 m, about 1,950 m of ascent over 42.195 km. Runners and their families fill the town for the weekend
Every twelve years or so
The Unspunnen Festival, with stone putting, Swiss wrestling, alphorn, flag throwing and yodelling in Interlaken and its neighbouring communities. The last edition drew about 90,000 visitors, and the next is planned for a summer some years ahead. Plan that weekend well ahead, since rooms and cars go long before aircraft do

Why the weekend costs more than the weather

The European light and midsize fleet is large, and no single Interlaken event dominates the calendar. The price pressure comes from the weekends: the Lauberhorn, the Christmas fortnight and the Greenfield Friday, when guests arrive together and the aircraft goes home empty. A booking made a fortnight before one of those can still be done, but it may mean positioning an aircraft from Zurich, Geneva or Milan. The same booking made five or six weeks ahead is simpler and cheaper. Outside those dates an Interlaken charter can usually be arranged in a day or two.

Ways to bring the Interlaken price down

  • Shift the dates by a few days. The midweek around a race or a festival is quieter than the weekend itself, and the weeks at either end of the ski season are the cheapest of the winter;
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. A jet that already sits in Zurich, Geneva or Milan needs less positioning than one coming from Britain, and on a sector of eighty minutes the positioning is a real part of the bill;
  • Check whether Zurich suits you as well. On the same light jet from Biggin Hill the sector to Zurich is priced about £100 higher than the one to Belp and the sector to Geneva about £100 lower. But Interlaken is 134 km from Zurich and 214 km from Geneva, against 51 km from Belp, so the saving in the air is often spent on the road, and each airport has its own slot or permission rule.

Types of flights

Interlaken produces a different mix from a hub city, because it is the gate to the best-known mountain scenery in Switzerland and at the same time a small town where the stay is built around the weather.

  • Jungfraujoch and valley visits in small groups: a morning landing at Belp, the train up in the afternoon and a night in the valley;
  • Winter stays in Wengen, Grindelwald or Mürren, with ski luggage, a car-free last stretch and a hotel that manages the bags;
  • Summer holidays on the lakes and in the valleys, with a helicopter glacier landing as the set piece of the week;
  • The Lauberhorn weekend in January, usually a small party with tickets for the Saturday and a Sunday return;
  • Conference and incentive groups, since Interlaken has been a conference town for a long time;
  • Festival and sport weekends: Greenfield in June and the Jungfrau Marathon in September.

A day trip from London to the Jungfraujoch is possible but leaves almost no margin. A landing a little after nine local time, an hour in the car, the rail journey of about two hours and ten minutes each way and a departure from Belp by 19:00 add up to a very long day, and weather on top can close the view you came for. We usually recommend one night in the valley, and we quote the aircraft waiting at Belp or going home empty so that the difference is on paper.

Empty Legs

An empty leg is a repositioning flight with nobody aboard, offered at a fraction of the usual price. Interlaken has no based fleet of its own, so these legs come from the pattern of the neighbouring airports, and it helps to know what produces them.

Where Interlaken empty legs come from

– Winter weekends in the Jungfrau valleys. Parties arrive at Belp on a Friday and the aircraft flies home with nobody aboard, and since jets must be away by 19:00 the legs offered tend to be afternoon departures;

– Race and festival weekends. Guests for the Lauberhorn, Greenfield or the marathon may arrive on charters from all over Europe, and an aircraft that leaves empty a day or two afterwards can be put up for sale;

– Aircraft moving between Zurich, Geneva, Sion and Belp. Operators reposition short legs inside Switzerland, and those hops can be very cheap.

The Swiss corridor is thinner than the busiest London routes, so a client who can name a few days has a far better chance than one who needs a particular evening. What you give up is the usual: the operator owns the date and the hour, and a leg can vanish when the original booking moves. Whatever is free is listed on our empty legs page, and we flag an Interlaken match the day an operator releases it.

Helicopter charter

In the Bernese Oberland the helicopter is a tool for the last stretch and for the sights. Two operators keep bases in the area: Air Glaciers at Lauterbrunnen and Swiss Helicopter at Gsteigwiler, close to Interlaken at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Belp itself is a helicopter airport, and Rega keeps its rescue base at the Interlaken field.

Lauterbrunnen base
Air Glaciers flies a 20-minute scenic flight in an Airbus H125 with a glacier landing of about ten minutes, weather permitting; the operator says landings on the Aletsch Glacier are not possible
about 20 minutes
Gsteigwiler-Interlaken base
Swiss Helicopter flies a glacier flight of about 20 minutes with a stop of about 20 minutes on the snow, for up to five people; in winter it can also leave from Männlichen
about 40 minutes
Belp to Interlaken
about 37 km in a straight line, so a short hop to a landing site agreed in advance
about 15 minutes
The Interlaken field (LSMI)
a private heliport and Rega rescue base, not a public landing point for transfers
agreed with the operator

Three questions to ask about every helicopter leg

– Where exactly does it land? Outside an aerodrome a helicopter needs an agreed site and the owner's consent, so a hotel lawn or a mountain platform is checked before the quote is written;

– What happens in cloud? A glacier landing is always weather permitting, and low cloud in the valleys can ground a helicopter while the jet lands without trouble. The same day needs a rail or road plan behind it;

– Which machine, and at what hour? At Belp the heavier helicopters follow the 08:00 to 19:00 window of the jets, and lighter ones may land until 21:00 and take off until 20:00, so the type we book shifts your evening. We book the helicopter with the jet, as one timetable.

For Alpine work the usual machine is the single-engine Airbus H125, the H130 gives a wider cabin for scenic transfers, and the H135 or the Bell 429 is chosen when a twin is wanted or the party is larger.

Interlaken charters from the booking notes: six typical trips

What the corridor looks like once a quote turns into a flight. Six typical jobs of the kind that come through our booking notes, described in outline, with the particulars changed.

JUNGFRAUJOCH · ONE NIGHT IN THE VALLEY

A morning landing and the top of Europe by afternoon

Biggin Hill - Bern-Belp, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 20 min · 4 pax

Wheels up at seven, on the ground a little after nine local time, in the car by half past nine and on the train in Interlaken before noon. The party stayed the night while the aircraft and crew waited at Belp, and that overnight is a line in the quote. The next day they were back at the airport by the middle of the afternoon, well inside the 19:00 limit.

WENGEN · A WINTER WEEK

Six people, ski bags and a car-free village

Farnborough - Bern-Belp, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 20 min · 6 pax

The hotel in Wengen handled the luggage from Lauterbrunnen station, so the transfer was a car to the valley and the cog railway up. A helicopter was priced as an alternative and left unused. The return was planned for a Sunday afternoon so that the aircraft left Belp well before 19:00.

LAUBERHORN · A JANUARY WEEKEND

Four guests with tickets for the downhill

London Luton - Bern-Belp, Phenom 300E, about 1 h 20 min · 4 pax

The booking went in six weeks ahead, when rooms in Wengen could still be had. The party landed on the Thursday to avoid the Friday traffic on the Bern ring road, watched the races on the Saturday and flew out on the Sunday afternoon. Nobody had to look at a clock.

A SUMMER WEEK · A GLACIER LANDING

Lakes, a boat and a helicopter in the snow

Southampton - Bern-Belp, Citation XLS+, about 1 h 25 min · 6 pax

The jet took the party to Belp, a car took them to the hotel on the Höheweg, and the helicopter flight from Lauterbrunnen with a landing on the glacier was booked for the second morning, with a lake afternoon as the weather fall-back. Cloud closed the first day and the plan held.

A DOG ON BOARD · AN AUTUMN BREAK

Two adults and a spaniel for a long weekend

London City - Zurich, Citation CJ3+, about 1 h 25 min · 2 pax + dog

The entry point for the dog was settled in writing before the aircraft was booked, which put the flight into Zurich and the road to Interlaken at about 1 h 45 min. The vet in Switzerland was booked inside the 24 to 120 hour window before the flight home, and the hotel took the dog.

EMPTY LEG · SUNDAY AFTERNOON WEST

A jet already going your way

Bern-Belp - Farnborough, Phenom 300E empty leg, about 1 h 20 min · 3 pax

The aircraft had brought a party in for the weekend and was going home empty. The client gave us a three-day window instead of a date, which is what makes these work, and paid well below a fresh one-way charter for a Sunday afternoon departure back to Hampshire.

Frequently asked questions about flying to Interlaken

1Can a private jet land in Interlaken?

No. The airfield at Interlaken (LSMI) is a former air force base that is now a private heliport and rescue base, and the federal aviation plan rules out further civil use by fixed-wing aircraft. Jets use Bern-Belp (BRN / LSZB), about 51 km and 45 minutes away by road, or Zurich, 134 km away. Helicopters connect the valleys and the glaciers.

2How long is a private jet flight from London to Interlaken?

About 1 hour 20 minutes from London City, Biggin Hill, Farnborough or Luton to Bern-Belp in a light jet or a Phenom, covering roughly 411 to 445 nautical miles. From Birmingham, Manchester or Bristol allow about 1 hour 30 to 35 minutes, and from Edinburgh or Glasgow around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours. The road from Belp to Interlaken adds about 45 minutes, and Switzerland is one hour ahead of Britain.

3How much does a private jet to Interlaken cost?

From about £6,500 one way on a light jet out of Biggin Hill into Bern-Belp, and £6,550 from London City. Luton and Farnborough in a Phenom run £6,850 to £6,950, a midsize cabin costs £8,550 to £9,500 from the south and Midlands, and from Scotland allow £15,300 to £15,700. The Lauberhorn weekend, the Greenfield week and the Christmas fortnight can price above these figures.

4Which airport is best for Interlaken, Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren, and can I land in the evening?

Bern-Belp is the practical choice for all four, with a runway of 1,730 m and no slot required. Aircraft above 3.5 tonnes may take off and land there only between 08:00 and 19:00 local time, which is 18:00 in Britain, so a business jet cannot make an evening departure. For a later flight we plan Zurich or Geneva, where we also confirm the slot or the prior permission, and allow for a road transfer of 1 h 45 min or more.

5Can I fly by helicopter to the Jungfrau region or land on a glacier?

Yes. Air Glaciers at Lauterbrunnen and Swiss Helicopter at Gsteigwiler fly scenic flights with a glacier landing, weather permitting, and the operator at Lauterbrunnen says landings on the Aletsch Glacier are not possible. A transfer helicopter from Belp to the valleys takes about 15 minutes. Where a machine may land is agreed before the quote, and cloud can stop a flight on a day when the jet lands without trouble.

6Can I take my dog to Interlaken on a private jet?

Yes, in the cabin. Switzerland wants a microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination, a vaccination that is valid, with the first dose given at 12 weeks or older, and an official veterinary certificate from Britain unless the animal has an EU or Swiss pet passport. The animal is checked at the red customs exit, and the Swiss veterinary office lists Basel, Geneva and Zurich for animals flown in with their owner, so the entry point is confirmed in writing before we quote. On the way home a dog needs a vet's tapeworm treatment 24 to 120 hours before landing in Britain, and cats do not.
