Alternatives worth knowing about: Geneva is 69 km away and operates around the clock, which makes it the natural fallback for a night arrival or a heavy long-range aircraft; Lyon Saint-Exupéry is 63 km, Grenoble sits south of the massif, and Annecy takes light aircraft. Courchevel has its own altiport at 2,000 m, but its very short sloping runway is restricted to specially certified crews and small types, which is why most clients land at Chambery and finish the journey by helicopter.
France is in the Schengen area, so a flight from Britain crosses an external border and passports are checked on arrival, at the aircraft rather than in a hall. UK passport holders need no visa for short stays.
Flying to Chambery with a dog or a cat

- A rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before entry, with the animal at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated;
- An Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian, issued within 10 days of entering the EU and good for the return to Britain for up to six months;
- Up to five animals per owner, travelling with the owner as a non-commercial movement;
- For the flight home, dogs need praziquantel from a vet 24 to 120 hours before landing in Britain, recorded with date and product. Cats are exempt.
Three things the Alps add to the usual checklist
– Altitude and cold. Resorts sit well above the valley, and small breeds, puppies and older dogs feel a February morning at 2,000 m more than their owners do. A coat and shorter walks solve most of it, and a vet check before a long stay is worth the appointment;
– Helicopter transfers and animals. A resort hop is short, but the cabin is small and noisy, and not every operator takes a dog on the rotary leg. We check this with the helicopter company at the same time as the jet, so nobody discovers it on the apron;
