One airport serves the island, and for a jet it is the only real choice. The airports below earn their place as alternatives: somewhere to park an aircraft when Corfu has no room, or a mainland field when the destination is not the island at all.

Landing permits, the Schengen border and the way home

A private, non-revenue flight into Greece does not usually need a landing permit. What it needs is the PPR and the slot, both obtained through the handler, and an operator that is licensed for the route. The rule changes when the flight is commercial: a non-scheduled charter by an operator from outside the EU, which includes British operators, needs a permit from the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, applied for at least five working days ahead and slower in summer, and it covers international flights only. A British charter is therefore limited to the pattern UK - Greece - UK, with passengers carried only between the two countries. London to Corfu and back is allowed. Corfu to Athens with passengers aboard is not, and for a trip that needs both we propose a Greek or EU operator for the domestic leg. We arrange the permits and say plainly when a trip cannot be flown as drawn.

For the flight home, the General Aviation Report for Britain is filed not earlier than 48 hours and not later than 2 hours before departure, and any passenger who needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation for the UK must hold it before boarding. British and Irish citizens are exempt. The handler who arranged the arrival files the Greek paperwork for the departure, and in summer the lounge fee applies to each leg with passengers. From the apron to Corfu Town

Corfu is a long, narrow island, about 64 km from end to end, with the airport on the east coast and most of what clients come for within an hour by road. The distances that need a boat are the interesting ones.

Corfu Town, Paleokastritsa and the north-east

The old town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is the reason many clients choose the island over a beach with a runway. Two Venetian fortresses, the Old Fortress and the New Fortress, enclose it, which is why the town is known as the kastropolis, the castle city. Below them lies the Spianada, described as the biggest square in south-eastern Europe, with the arcaded Liston on its western side and a cricket pitch in front of it, because cricket in Greece is played in Corfu and nowhere else. A morning in the old town is a walk, a coffee at the Liston and the Church of Saint Spyridon, where the relics of the island's patron saint are kept. South of the town, Mon Repos, a former summer palace of the Greek royal family, is the birthplace of Prince Philip, and the Achilleion at Gastouri, built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, was later bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The west coast belongs to Paleokastritsa, a string of coves under limestone cliffs about 25 km from Corfu Town, with the fortress of Angelokastro just to the north and a monastery on the headland. Boats leave Alipa Port for the sea caves from about May to October, motorboats of up to 30 horsepower can be hired without a licence, and the car park behind the main beach is typically full by mid-morning in peak season. A client who wants to see it in comfort goes before nine or after four.

The north-east is where the villas are. The coast between Barbati and Kassiopi has been developed far less than the rest of the island, villas outnumber large hotels, and the stretch is nicknamed Kensington-on-Sea. Barbati and Nissaki have the pebble beaches, Agni is a row of seafood tavernas that you reach by boat or on foot, Kalami keeps the White House once lived in by Lawrence Durrell, and Agios Stefanos has a Rothschild estate. Kassiopi, at the end of the road, is a harbour village under a ruined Byzantine castle, with the Albanian mountains in the view across the water. Most villa arrivals drive from the airport, and the steep, narrow lanes between the main road and the sea are one reason to ask the villa about the car before you book it.

Paxos, Antipaxos and a day in Albania by sea

Paxos lies about 15 km off the southern tip of Corfu, and Antipaxos sits roughly 5 km further south-east. The ferry from Corfu Town reaches Gaios in about an hour, and tourist boats and sea taxis run from Gaios to Antipaxos in 15 to 20 minutes. A private sea taxi can also serve a villa directly, and a helicopter makes the crossing in about 25 minutes. Visitors to either island fly into Corfu and cross by water, so the sensible plan is a day, or a night, arranged around the boat.

Albania is close enough to see from Kassiopi, and the question that clients ask is whether it fits into the trip. By sea it does. Regular fast boats from the port of Corfu Town reach Saranda in as little as 30 minutes, the first boat leaves at around half past eight in the morning and the last one back sails late in the evening, and the ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO site of Greek and Roman remains, lie about 14 km south of Saranda. British citizens may enter Albania without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180, with a passport valid for at least three months after the day of departure from Albania, and passport control takes place in a small terminal at Saranda. On the way back you re-enter Greece through an external Schengen border, so carry the passport and allow for a check at the port. We keep this part of the plan off the aircraft: a flight to an Albanian airport would be a separate international sector with its own permits, and a ferry does the job for a British passport holder without any aviation permits.

Flying to Corfu with a dog or a cat

Greece asks for more paperwork than the flight takes minutes to prepare, and a three-hour flight is long enough for a dog to settle and sleep. The animal sits in the cabin beside you, never in a hold. The detail that goes wrong is the date on the health certificate, which is valid for only ten days for entry to the EU, and the second is the point at which the animal is allowed to arrive.

What Greece asks for when a pet arrives from Britain:

• An ISO microchip, fitted before the rabies vaccination or at the same time;
• A rabies vaccination given when the animal was at least 12 weeks old, with 21 days elapsed before the animal travels;
• An Animal Health Certificate for each trip, issued by an Official Veterinarian and valid for ten days for entry to the EU. A British pet passport cannot be used to enter the EU;
• No more than five animals per traveller, presented at an approved point of entry. The Greek foreign ministry names Corfu among its island entry points for dogs and cats arriving from outside the EU;
• For dogs, a tapeworm treatment from a vet between 24 and 120 hours before arrival back in Britain, recorded on the paperwork. Cats are exempt.

The Corfu calendar: an island that works from spring to autumn

Corfu has two lives. From late October to March it is a wet, green island with few visitors, most hotels shut and scheduled flights much reduced. From spring to autumn it is a summer airport with slot coordination, an executive lounge for private flights and a rush that peaks in August. Knowing which week you want matters more than choosing an aircraft.

Ways to bring the Corfu price down

• Move the dates out of July and August where you can. The last two weeks of September are warm, calm and cheaper to reach;
• Fly nonstop. A stop at Athens adds a landing, a second slot and, for any leg inside Greece, a second operator, and on the same light jet from Biggin Hill Athens is priced about £2,500 higher than Corfu;
• Ask for a window, not a date. If you can leave on either of two days, the operator can often pick the one on which a positioning flight is already planned, and that saving reaches you.

Types of flights

Corfu is mostly leisure, but a real old town, a long yachting season and a loyal base of second-home owners give it more variety than a beach island. Most trips are for a week or less.
